Kia Sorento, Granby International and the Adrenaline Souvenir Album

Let me first apologize for my absence over the last few weeks but as you’ll see I’ve been busy coming out with yet another publication in the Adrenaline automotive line up.

Kia’s Sorento
Regular readers know that each year I make the annual pilgrimage to Quebec’s largest automotive event, the Granby International Car Show, and each year I bring along what I think will be a new car that will be a hit with the show goers that have come to see vintage iron of all sorts. In the past there have been days that I’ve spent more time showing people around the vehicle parked in my booth than my publications, Ram’s ProMaster is a case in point.
Of course there has to be a certain criteria to my ride of the weekend; first and foremost it must be able to carry my entire show booth which this year included three folding eight-foot tables, two chairs, my 10’ x 10’ tent, boxes of Klassic & Moto, several boxes of Klassic Plus magazines as well as the last three remaining boxes of the Adrenaline Car Show Agenda. On top of which some promotional swag, tarps in case of rain, a cooler, duffle bag of clothes and lots of blankets to keep the truck’s cargo bay from getting scratched. Lastly it must accommodate my six-foot frame in the cargo bay, as I tend to sleep in the truck. This came about one year when while staying at a local motel, a sudden storm nearly ripped my tent from its mooring. Others weren’t as lucky. From that day on I’ve been staying on sight enjoying the first rays of the sun as it rises over the grounds of the flea market area.

Admittedly the mid-size Sorento was not my first pick for the weekend, but as they say, the best laid plans…so when my ride that I had booked months earlier became unavailable, the folks at Kia Canada stepped up to the plate offering me a brand new SXL. Still, I was apprehensive that everything would fit into the curvaceous suv as past experience often proved curves and cargo volume do not always mix, and indeed, “Does all that into the Sorento ?” was the question not of the day bit of the weekend. The answer was yes.  It may have been loaded to the roof, but it all fit. Well all except ten cases of our latest publication, which we picked up at the printers on route to the show with a buddy’s truck. The Sorento easily swallowed up what was left on Sunday afternoon.

The Sorento has matured nicely through its three generations to be a viable contender in the mid-size suv niche. Now in its fourth year of the latest generation, for 2019 the Sorento has received a mild facelift including the new corporate grille, LED fog and taillights, a new front fascia and rear bumper. Under the hood the 185 horsepower 2.4L inline four mated to a 6-speed automatic is still the entry-level powerhouse while the 290 horsepower, 3.3L V6 gets a new 8-speed automatic in lieu of last year’s 6-speed. The 2.0L turbocharged four has been retired. 
Prices start at a reasonable $30, 205 for the front drive LX FWD model powered by the aforementioned 2.4L four. Add another two grand if you want all-wheel-drive.  For $34,705 you can get into the 290 horse 3.3 V6 with LX trim, with cloth seats and a third row of seats. Yes you read that right the Sorento is available with seating for seven, making it one of the lowest priced seven passenger suvs on the market.

Getting into the techno world with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto will cost you, beginning with $37,005 EX trim with four-cylinder power and leather seats. Included in the package is UVO Intelligence which links this suv to your smart phone for remote start/stop and set your climate control remotely.
In all, there are a total of eight trim levels topping off with our SXL tester’s tag of $51,075.
The 252 lb.ft. of torque in the V6 scurries the Sorento down the road very nicely thank you and the new 8-speed tranny is a perfect match with seamless shifts and powering up when called upon. Towing capacity is a respectable 5,000 lbs. Smoothing out our wonderful third world roads is another Sorento strong point with a compliant, quiet ride.
The Harman Kardon sound system and sat radio made the drive down to Quebec’s Eastern Townships that much more pleasant.  Oh and thanks for keeping a dial for tuning the radio stations when opting for others than the pre-selected posts.

Two visitors to the show who surrendered their 2004 Sorento in 2012 were surprised by the cabin revisions and refinements including the heated/cooled Nappa leather seats, panorama sunroof and 8-inch touch screen. The SXL’s larger touch screen (7-inch screen is standard) and 360 degree camera came in handy when it came time to squeeze into my tight, roped off parking spot.

With the third row seats up there’s 11.3 cu.ft. of cargo room, drop the third row and you get 38 cu.ft. of usable space. For my Granby trip, with both rows folded, that space jumped to 73 cu.ft., a respectable number considering the Kia’s exterior dimensions.

The 3rd row seats appear more as jump seats lacking some padding,
And while the two front buckets and the second row seats offer an abundance of head and legroom, the same cannot be said about the third row. Fitting seven full-sized adults will be a tight squeeze, made tighter by cup holders and arm rests. Honda’s Pilot, the Toyota Highlander and VW’s Atlas may be a better choice if you regularly haul a truckload of adults.

At just over 50 grand the Sorento may first appear to on the high side, but taking a look at what you get, like the panoramic moon roof, the dual climate control, power heated seats and steering wheel, a long warranty and a slew of safety awards and this mid-size wagon starts looking pretty good. Yes its smaller in size to its competition, but that doesn’t take away from the Sorento’s value. Oddly enough the four cylinder, according to Kia gets superior gas mileage over the V6, 10.7city/8.2highway vs. 12.5/9.7. My average was a tad better, even with a full load  (9.1L/100kms), running the truck mostly in eco mode through the 760km voyage on the brand spanking new Sorento. Which means that after its break in period, the V6 might just be getting closer to the four’s gas consumption.   
If you’re looking for a handsome mid size hauler that can swallow up loads of cargo, don’t forget to make the Sorento down on your short list of must drives.

Each year, eight cars are selected to be in the running for the Ridler Award prior to the public opening of the show. The Great 8 are displayed at the main entry doors to Detroit’s Cobo Hall. The entire weekend is abuzz with debate as to which car deserves the Ridler. It was of little surprise when the late Steve Barton’s spectacular Cadillac/Nomad mashup, Cadmad, was declared the Ridler Award winner for 2019.
Harold and Pat Ehlert are the original and current owners of this 1970 Plymouth Superbird. The Limelight wing car was parked in 1973 and restored by Nathan and Paris Ehlert in 2016. A 440ci four-barrel engine rated at 375 hp sends power through a four-speed manual transmission.
Muscle cars have a presence at the Detroit Autorama, but they are not the main attraction. That said, there are enough of our 1960-1974-era muscle cars on display to warrant making the trip to Detroit. The 1970 Monte Carlo SS owned by John and Connie Fifer was remarkable, as was the 1965 Tri-power, four-speed GTO that belonged to Scott Tiemann’s parents, which was looking assembly-line fresh following its restoration. There was a number of original, unrestored muscle cars on hand, including a 4,495-mile unrestored 1969 Z/28. Check out some of the other muscle cars and a few of the wild hot rods that were at the 2019 Detroit Autorama.
The big-block A-body Mopars have been tearing up the dragstrips for decades. Darin Gehr restored his 383-powered four-speed 1968 Dodge Dart GTS to perfection. Paint work was handled by Pat O’Connor.
One of the most incredible restored muscle cars at the Detroit Autorama was John and Connie Fifer’s 1970 Monte Carlo SS. The drivetrain consists of the 360hp, 454ci LS5 engine; M40 Turbo 400 three-speed automatic transmission; and 12 bolt 2.56-geared differential. The Fifer’s Monte Carlo was researched and restored to make sure all numbers and date codes are matching and correct. Every bolt, nut, clip, and clamp was cleaned and replated. All factory chalk marks and paint code markings were accurately reproduced.
Charlie Pate owns this restored 1970 Chevelle SS. The LS5 454/360hp engine, M21 four-speed transmission, and 12-bolt 3.31 Positraction rear provide the ultimate muscle car driving experience. The Cranberry Red SS454 has only travelled 34,482 actual miles and is well equipped with Cowl Induction hood, air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, SS five-spoke wheels, bucket seats and console, gauge package, AM/FM radio, and power windows.
Scott Tiemann’s parents, Jerry and Carolyn, purchased their Fountain Blue 1965 GTO at Royal Pontiac on May 21, 1965. The car is absolutely loaded, with options that include the Rally gauge package, wood steering wheel, padded dash, power windows, power steering, mirror group, lamp group, console, AM radio with rear speaker, and rear window defogger. The GTO’s Tri-power 389 is joined to a M20 four-speed transmission and 3.55 Safe-T-Track axle. Scott handled the entire restoration at his shop, Supercar Specialties in Portland, Michigan. Fantastic provenance, history, and restoration make this car a standout, and easily the one car I would have loved to drive home from Autorama.
The 1968 Hurst/Olds owned by James Kryta is one of 515 produced. The Peruvian Silver H/O is powered by a 455ci engine that produced a factory-rated 390 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. A Turbo 400 transmission and 3.90-geared differential finish off the powertrain. Paint and bodywork were performed by Nyle Wing at Wings Auto Art. Scott Tiemann handled the restoration detail and assembly. Chrome work was from A&W Chrome.
Fritz Helmuth owns this one-of-100 1970 Trans Am Javelin, which was restored by Lavine Restorations in Nappanee, Indiana. The 390ci engine is restored to absolutely new condition. A ram-air hood provides fresh air induction for increased horsepower. A BorgWarner T10 four-speed transmission and 3.91 Twin Grip AMC 20 differential combine for spirited acceleration. Dealer-installed Sidewinder pipes and an eight-track radio were hot items in 1970.
For 1970, AMC built 4,116 AMXs. Joe Papelian owns this Golden Lime example, one of 1,632 built with the 390 Go Pack. The AMX features a Ram Air hood, a four-speed T10V BorgWarner close-ratio transmission, a 3.54 Twin Grip rear, and leather seats. Rob Eppler and Willie Shaw performed the mechanical restoration of this outstanding AMX.
Diversified Creations brought out this red 1970 AMX modified with an AMC 401 engine with a 3/4 racing camshaft and a high-rise intake manifold. Also onboard are a 700R4 GM four-speed automatic transmission and a Vintage Air A/C system. Smart updates make for a great-driving AMC with plenty of visual pop.
Mark Bonnet doesn’t mind the manual steering and manual brakes found in his 1964 Dodge 440. The 426ci Wedge engine and 727 TorqueFlite transmission make a perfect combination for street/strip speed and reliability. This Mopar was built at Geno’s Custom Paint and Moe’s Body and Paint.
The Cream, a 1966 Dodge Hemi Charger, is owned by Mark Kersher. It was restored by PSI in Sterling, Michigan, with a numbers-matching 426 Hemi engine built by Ted Spehar. The car originated from the Chrysler Lynch Road Assembly plant.
The 1966 Dodge Charger owned by Mark Lavelle is powered by a 383 V-8. The GG1 Dark Green Poly Charger was restored in loving memory of John Quinn at After Hours Restorations LLC. A 727 TorqueFlite three-speed automatic and a 3.23-geared 8 3/4 rear were the bread-and-butter combination in 1966.
Black Betty, a 1967 Chevelle SS396 owned by John and Felisha Marecki, was looking strong in day-two attire. The engine is a modified 396/402 big-block with LS5 heads and a Holley 770 Street Avenger carburetor. It’s all about stance. Debra Borsos’ 1967 RS/SS Camaro had plenty of it with the vintage American Racing 200S wheels and BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. The Camaro was looking ready for comfortable cruising with its rare fold-down center armrest and column shifter.
This unrestored original 1969 Z/28 Camaro has 4,495 original miles on its DZ302 engine. Diversified Creations had the car on display. An original 2×4 cross-ram manifold was found in the trunk.
This unrestored original Wimbledon White 1969 Ford Fairlane Cobra only has 33,000 original miles. It is equipped with the 428 four-barrel engine, four-speed Top Loader transmission, and bucket seats. The rare Cobra was purchased at Dils Motor Company in Parkersburg, West Virginia.
The Ford guys were happy to see Kevin Shelton’s restored 1970 Super Cobra Jet Mach 1. The Shaker hood and Magnum wheels looked great. The highly detailed engine compartment was sporting all the right stickers, details, and factory markings.
Cadmad, a custom 1959 Cadillac, was the 2019 Don Ridler Memorial Award winner. The stunning two-door Nomad-style wagon is powered by a twin-turbo 632-inch big-block Chevy built by Nelson Racing Engines. Jordan Quintal Sr. and his crew at Super Rides by Jordan in Escondido, California, built the car. Owner Steve Barton passed away prior to the completion of Cadmad, but his brother, Craig, displayed the finished car in his memory.
Another Great 8 winner was ZL69, a customized 1969 Camaro owned by Pat and Debbie Moran. The original taillights were replaced with 2012 Camaro taillights in reverse position. A Camaro SS roof was grafted on and chopped 1 inch at the A-pillar. A 6.2L LSA supercharged engine rests comfortably in the Schwartz Industry G Machine chassis featuring rack-and-pinion steering, Ride Tech adjustable coilover shocks, and Baer Brakes.
Brace yourselves, muscle car buddies! This is a real A12 liftoff-hood 440 Six Pack car. But when it was found, it was a cut-up and butchered drag car with the original drivetrain long gone. For that reason, owner Brian Storm decided to build a killer Hot Wheels–style 1969 Super Bee. He had legendary chassis builder Jim Homier of Speed & Custom in Woodstock, Georgia, build the car, with help from Noah Storm. Beautiful paint and bodywork were done by Newberry Bodyshop. A 572ci aluminum Indy Wedge powers the radical Mopar. Gargantuan Budnik wheels complete the radical Hot Wheels theme.
The Doctor’s Orders 1965 Dodge Coronet Hemi two-door sedan is owned by John and Kim Barich. They started with a one-owner Florida car with factory tinted glass and heater delete. The rear springs were relocated, and subframe connectors were installed. Bodywork and paint were handled by PSI Automotive in Sterling Heights, Michigan, while the Hemi was built by Automotive Machine in Fraser, Michigan. The engine features an original 1965 magnesium cross-ram intake, Holley carburetors, Stage V aluminum heads, and TTI long-tube headers.
The Shadowoods Auto Center 1968 SS/A Hemi Barracuda is owned by the Tignanelli Brothers, Jim and Tom. Both brothers have shared driving and wrenching duties. Tom was a Chrysler engineer who helped catapult Chrysler drag racing into the spotlight in the 1960s and 1970s.
Since Chrysler built only 83 LO23 Hemi Darts for 1968, Jerry Helfman decided to build his own Hemi Dart clone car called Red Beauty. The 580hp 426 Hemi features aluminum heads, cross-ram intake, and two 770 Holley carburetors. A Passon Performance A833 four-speed transmission with Hurst shifter sends big torque to a Dana 60 4.10 rear. Special features include a lightweight front end and doors, Lexan windows, A100 seats, and original-style steel wheels with dog dish hubcaps. Gorgeous EW1 white paint and V1W white vinyl top set off this 1970 Challenger R/T, equipped with a 440 Six Pack, a Shaker hood, and a four-speed. According to the owner, the Track Pack with Dana 3.54 rear, R/T stripe, and other options make this E-body a “one of one known to exist.”

Ferrari has a new mid-engine supercar in the form of the F8 Tributo. The car replaces the 488 GTB in the Ferrari fold and is essentially the 488 Pista in a new wrapper. Torque, Thrust: 2019 Ram 2500 / 3500 HD First Drive
To an outsider, the launch of Ram’s new heavy-duty pickups might seem like a symphony of chest thumping. After all, Fiat-Chrysler’s engineers trumpeted the new Ram’s best-in-class 1,000 lb-ft of torque and 35,100-lb towing capacity when it debuted.
But a week or so later—and three weeks before we were allowed to tell you how the new Ram trucks drive—Chevrolet announced a 35,500-pound towing capacity for the Silverado 3500. Meanwhile, Ford also showed off its revised F-series Super Duty, with a promise of increased but as-yet unspecified towing numbers. It wouldn’t surprise us if Ram finds a way to up its own specs (“You can tow more if you remove the window glass!”), because the HD-truck arms race will continue unabated until the sun swells up and swallows the earth.
Thing is, though, the new HD Ram doesn’t need to brag on its numbers. That’s because it follows in the tread marks of its redone-for-’19 half-ton sibling, the Ram 1500, which is the nicest and best truck on the market. And if sales of the light-duty 1500 are any indication, the public is figuring that out.
Rugged Luxury
It’s no secret that pickups have been getting posher over the years, but Ram has taken things to a new level. It proudly boasts that its top-of-the-line HD models have more leather and wood than any other pickup, and we’re content to take the company’s word for it. The Limited model has leather on the seats, leather on the console, leather on the dash, leather on the door panels, and leather on the gear selector. And where there isn’t leather, there’s open-pore wood trim that looks freshly hewn. If cowboys designed Bentleys, this is what they’d look like.
Among the impressive elements about the new truck are the lengths Ram went to in order to differentiate the trim levels. Every model has its own personality, reflected in its interior accents, fabric choices, grillework, and even the fonts used on the instruments. Sit in a low-level Tradesman or Big Horn, then check out a top-of-the-line Longhorn or Limited, and they feel almost like completely different trucks. It’s a real contrast to GMC’s latest Sierra, in which there’s little differentiation between the top-line Denali and lower trims.
In-vehicle technology shares the spotlight. Ram offers three sizes of touchscreens, the largest of which is a 12.0-inch, vertically oriented monster that allows two standard-size views (for example, the climate-control display and the audio system) to be displayed at one time. It can also show a giant map in full-screen mode, very handy when one is hauling a heavy trailer and needs to preview the road ahead with a critical eye.
But even the bottom-of-the-line Tradesman, outfitted with commercial-grade vinyl seats, a plastic dash, and the smallest available display, shows an attribute we’re not used to seeing in heavy-duty trucks: refinement. Whether you opt for the 6.4-liter gas V-8 or the famed 6.7-liter Cummins diesel, the truck is surprisingly quiet, something Ram went to great lengths to achieve with improved sound deadening, an acoustic windshield, and an active noise-cancellation system for top-of-the-line models.
The Dirty Bits
Naturally, there has been much beefing up of the mechanicals. We’ll leave the technical deep dive to our colleagues at Truck Trend, and instead hit the highlights. The frame and axles have been strengthened, and the suspension geometry revised to improve ride and handling. The shocks are valved to provide variable response to softer or harsher inputs, and optional rear air-spring leveling is offered on both the 2500 and 3500 that not only self-levels the truck, but also gives it the ability to squat down under a trailer hitch and then raise itself to hook up.
2500 models have a five-link rear suspension, which does wonders for the ride. It doesn’t seem that long ago that heavy-duty trucks rode like, well, heavy-duty trucks. The 2500 models feel as steady as the half-ton trucks of not-too-long-ago, and while the 3500s get leaf springs in the rear and are noticeably harsher, they’re still surprisingly comfortable given their ability to haul up to 7,680 pounds in the bed.
Last year’s 5.7-liter gasoline V-8 has been dropped; the base engine is now the 6.4-liter gas V-8, which returns with 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque and a new eight-speed automatic. But it was the Cummins turbo-diesel that put Ram HDs on the map, and it’s been extensively updated. The 6.7-liter straight-six now makes 370 horses and 850 lb-ft in standard trim, and—warning, headline material ahead—400 horsepower and 1,000 lb-ft of torque in high-output form. Currently, the Chevy tops out at 910 lb-ft and the Ford at 935. For perspective, the base engine in a new Peterbilt 579 semi makes 1,150 lb-ft. Both versions of the diesel get six-speed automatics, but while the standard-output engine gets a beefed-up Chrysler transmission, the high-output version gets an Aisin unit.
Cummins did a lot of work on the engine to facilitate the upgrades, including a new compacted graphite iron (CGI) block, a redesigned cylinder head, a new turbocharger, and a 2,900-psi fuel system. The strength of the CGI block allowed many of the nonstructural components to be switched from iron to aluminum, and as a result the new engine is 60 pounds lighter. FCA engineers had to increase the size of the cooling system, and were rather pleased that they were able to do it without altering the Ram’s signature styling.
The Part Where We Drive
We started our drive in a 3500 regular-cab Big Horn, one step up from the entry-level Tradesman, with a V-8 engine up front and a 1,500-ish-pound load in the bed. With an interior done up in black plastic, the truck was all about function over form, but we were impressed by the simplicity of the layout and the quality of even those basic materials, which is more than we can say for Ram trucks of just a few years back. Big mirrors and a commendable lack of bulges on the hood make the big Ram as easy to drive as a half-ton.
Our second truck, a 2500 Limited crew-cab with the stoutest diesel, was a real cowboy Cadillac, awash in leather and wood and featuring the massive 12.0-inch vertical infotainment screen. We’re not totally convinced about the latter—we prefer real buttons for the climate controls versus a touch-screen, though perhaps owners will grow familiar and won’t mind. Only the column shifter, an unbending affair that looks as if it were made from a piece of bar-stock steel, stood out as slightly awkward. But the overwhelming impression was that it’s a lovely truck to drive, with a comfortable ride, a dearth of engine and road noise, and power, power, power.
Naturally, we towed a trailer—a 30-something-foot fifth-wheel palace for horses and people. In terms of towing and hauling technology, Ram offers a comprehensive camera package, including a wiring harness for a remote camera that can be mounted on the back of (or inside) your trailer. The trucks also have an automatic emergency braking system which can trigger the trailer brakes or be disabled if you’re towing horses. We were more impressed by Smart Brake, a feature that’s been on Ram HDs for some time. Put the exhaust brake in Smart mode, take your foot off the accelerator, and it will use the transmission and exhaust brake to maintain the same speed as you cruise downhill. Very cool—and very safe.
We also did some off-roading in the new Power Wagon, the 2500-based macho version of the Ram HD, which benefits from the new eight-speed automatic that gives it a 50:1 crawl ratio. The built-in winch (which precludes the Wagon from getting the diesel engine) now uses a synthetic cable in place of steel, saving 28 pounds. We hit some pretty intense trails in Hungry Valley, one of which required some help from the winch (with another Power Wagon as the anchor point). Suffice it to say that it’s a great off-roader on trails big enough to accommodate a truck its size—and anything the Power Wagon can’t fit through, it can probably knock over.
As for pricing, the cheapest HD, a 2500 4×2 regular-cab Tradesman, starts at $35,090, including the $1,695 destination fee. 3500s start at $36,540. Power Wagons begin at $54,595 and Mega Cabs at $48,195. The most expensive model, a 3500 4×4 Limited with the Mega Cab, starts at $68,745. Want a diesel? You’ll pay $9,100 extra for the standard-output version and $11,795 for the beefier one. Other option costs have not yet been announced, but based on the current truck, we could be looking at Ram trucks closing in on—and maybe passing—$100,000.
As sure as the sun will cross the sky, truck fans will spend thousands of hours bragging and debating the various capacities of different rigs. The Ram HD may or may not be the most capable on the market at any given moment, but it’s clear to us that it’s the nicest and easiest-to-live-with heavy-duty truck on the market—and we don’t see that changing any time soon.

We’re not totally convinced about the latter—we prefer real buttons for the climate controls versus a touch-screen, though perhaps owners will grow familiar and won’t mind. Only the column shifter, an unbending affair that looks as if it were made from a piece of bar-stock steel, stood out as slightly awkward. But the overwhelming impression was that it’s a lovely truck to drive, with a comfortable ride, a dearth of engine and road noise, and power, power, power.
Naturally, we towed a trailer—a 30-something-foot fifth-wheel palace for horses and people. In terms of towing and hauling technology, Ram offers a comprehensive camera package, including a wiring harness for a remote camera that can be mounted on the back of (or inside) your trailer. The trucks also have an automatic emergency braking system which can trigger the trailer brakes or be disabled if you’re towing horses. We were more impressed by Smart Brake, a feature that’s been on Ram HDs for some time. Put the exhaust brake in Smart mode, take your foot off the accelerator, and it will use the transmission and exhaust brake to maintain the same speed as you cruise downhill. Very cool—and very safe.
We also did some off-roading in the new Power Wagon, the 2500-based macho version of the Ram HD, which benefits from the new eight-speed automatic that gives it a 50:1 crawl ratio. The built-in winch (which precludes the Wagon from getting the diesel engine) now uses a synthetic cable in place of steel, saving 28 pounds. We hit some pretty intense trails in Hungry Valley, one of which required some help from the winch (with another Power Wagon as the anchor point). Suffice it to say that it’s a great off-roader on trails big enough to accommodate a truck its size—and anything the Power Wagon can’t fit through, it can probably knock over.
As for pricing, the cheapest HD, a 2500 4×2 regular-cab Tradesman, starts at $35,090, including the $1,695 destination fee. 3500s start at $36,540. Power Wagons begin at $54,595 and Mega Cabs at $48,195. The most expensive model, a 3500 4×4 Limited with the Mega Cab, starts at $68,745. Want a diesel? You’ll pay $9,100 extra for the standard-output version and $11,795 for the beefier one. Other option costs have not yet been announced, but based on the current truck, we could be looking at Ram trucks closing in on—and maybe passing—$100,000.
As sure as the sun will cross the sky, truck fans will spend thousands of hours bragging and debating the various capacities of different rigs. The Ram HD may or may not be the most capable on the market at any given moment, but it’s clear to us that it’s the nicest and easiest-to-live-with heavy-duty truck on the market—and we don’t see that changing any time soon.

Torque, Thrust: 2019 Ram 2500 / 3500 HD First Drive
To an outsider, the launch of Ram’s new heavy-duty pickups might seem like a symphony of chest thumping. After all, Fiat-Chrysler’s engineers trumpeted the new Ram’s best-in-class 1,000 lb-ft of torque and 35,100-lb towing capacity when it debuted.
But a week or so later—and three weeks before we were allowed to tell you how the new Ram trucks drive—Chevrolet announced a 35,500-pound towing capacity for the Silverado 3500. Meanwhile, Ford also showed off its revised F-series Super Duty, with a promise of increased but as-yet unspecified towing numbers. It wouldn’t surprise us if Ram finds a way to up its own specs (“You can tow more if you remove the window glass!”), because the HD-truck arms race will continue unabated until the sun swells up and swallows the earth.
Thing is, though, the new HD Ram doesn’t need to brag on its numbers. That’s because it follows in the tread marks of its redone-for-’19 half-ton sibling, the Ram 1500, which is the nicest and best truck on the market. And if sales of the light-duty 1500 are any indication, the public is figuring that out.
Rugged Luxury
It’s no secret that pickups have been getting posher over the years, but Ram has taken things to a new level. It proudly boasts that its top-of-the-line HD models have more leather and wood than any other pickup, and we’re content to take the company’s word for it. The Limited model has leather on the seats, leather on the console, leather on the dash, leather on the door panels, and leather on the gear selector. And where there isn’t leather, there’s open-pore wood trim that looks freshly hewn. If cowboys designed Bentleys, this is what they’d look like.
Among the impressive elements about the new truck are the lengths Ram went to in order to differentiate the trim levels. Every model has its own personality, reflected in its interior accents, fabric choices, grillework, and even the fonts used on the instruments. Sit in a low-level Tradesman or Big Horn, then check out a top-of-the-line Longhorn or Limited, and they feel almost like completely different trucks. It’s a real contrast to GMC’s latest Sierra, in which there’s little differentiation between the top-line Denali and lower trims.
In-vehicle technology shares the spotlight. Ram offers three sizes of touchscreens, the largest of which is a 12.0-inch, vertically oriented monster that allows two standard-size views (for example, the climate-control display and the audio system) to be displayed at one time. It can also show a giant map in full-screen mode, very handy when one is hauling a heavy trailer and needs to preview the road ahead with a critical eye.
But even the bottom-of-the-line Tradesman, outfitted with commercial-grade vinyl seats, a plastic dash, and the smallest available display, shows an attribute we’re not used to seeing in heavy-duty trucks: refinement. Whether you opt for the 6.4-liter gas V-8 or the famed 6.7-liter Cummins diesel, the truck is surprisingly quiet, something Ram went to great lengths to achieve with improved sound deadening, an acoustic windshield, and an active noise-cancellation system for top-of-the-line models.
The Dirty Bits
Naturally, there has been much beefing up of the mechanicals. We’ll leave the technical deep dive to our colleagues at Truck Trend, and instead hit the highlights. The frame and axles have been strengthened, and the suspension geometry revised to improve ride and handling. The shocks are valved to provide variable response to softer or harsher inputs, and optional rear air-spring leveling is offered on both the 2500 and 3500 that not only self-levels the truck, but also gives it the ability to squat down under a trailer hitch and then raise itself to hook up.
2500 models have a five-link rear suspension, which does wonders for the ride. It doesn’t seem that long ago that heavy-duty trucks rode like, well, heavy-duty trucks. The 2500 models feel as steady as the half-ton trucks of not-too-long-ago, and while the 3500s get leaf springs in the rear and are noticeably harsher, they’re still surprisingly comfortable given their ability to haul up to 7,680 pounds in the bed.
Last year’s 5.7-liter gasoline V-8 has been dropped; the base engine is now the 6.4-liter gas V-8, which returns with 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque and a new eight-speed automatic. But it was the Cummins turbo-diesel that put Ram HDs on the map, and it’s been extensively updated. The 6.7-liter straight-six now makes 370 horses and 850 lb-ft in standard trim, and—warning, headline material ahead—400 horsepower and 1,000 lb-ft of torque in high-output form. Currently, the Chevy tops out at 910 lb-ft and the Ford at 935. For perspective, the base engine in a new Peterbilt 579 semi makes 1,150 lb-ft. Both versions of the diesel get six-speed automatics, but while the standard-output engine gets a beefed-up Chrysler transmission, the high-output version gets an Aisin unit.
Cummins did a lot of work on the engine to facilitate the upgrades, including a new compacted graphite iron (CGI) block, a redesigned cylinder head, a new turbocharger, and a 2,900-psi fuel system. The strength of the CGI block allowed many of the nonstructural components to be switched from iron to aluminum, and as a result the new engine is 60 pounds lighter. FCA engineers had to increase the size of the cooling system, and were rather pleased that they were able to do it without altering the Ram’s signature styling.
The Part Where We Drive
We started our drive in a 3500 regular-cab Big Horn, one step up from the entry-level Tradesman, with a V-8 engine up front and a 1,500-ish-pound load in the bed. With an interior done up in black plastic, the truck was all about function over form, but we were impressed by the simplicity of the layout and the quality of even those basic materials, which is more than we can say for Ram trucks of just a few years back. Big mirrors and a commendable lack of bulges on the hood make the big Ram as easy to drive as a half-ton.
Our second truck, a 2500 Limited crew-cab with the stoutest diesel, was a real cowboy Cadillac, awash in leather and wood and featuring the massive 12.0-inch vertical infotainment screen. Motor News: 2019 North American International Auto Show Recap
The North American International Auto Show is always a special event for us here at Motorweek. But this year’s Detroit festivities are even more noteworthy, as this is the last time the show will be held in usually frigid January. It migrates to a warmer June time frame next year. But, before we get all nostalgic, let's see all of 20-19’s big reveals!
While most European automakers didn’t make the Detroit stop this year. The majority of domestic and import brands arrived at the 2019 North American International Auto Show with an extensive stream of all-new models that we just can’t wait to drive.
As always, the North American Car of the Year awards kicked things off. This year’s NACTOY honors going to the Genesis G70 for Car of the Year…
…the Ram 1500 for Truck of the Year…
…and the Hyundai Kona, including the Kona EV, for Utility of the Year. 
Congratulations to all!
It was the Ford stand that really get our adrenaline pumping. As if descending from performance-car heaven…the all-new Mustang Shelby GT500. 700+ horsepower from a 5.2–liter supercharged V8 mated to a 7-speed DCT; no manual for now! While that may be heresy, with a 0-60 in the low 3s, this Shelby is going to kick some serious butt on the drag strip, along with road course dominance thanks to a magnetic suspension, loads of rubber crammed into the wheel wells, and Brembo brakes.  Carroll Shelby would definitely approve!
Ford had one for the family street scene as well…the all-new, three-row, 2020 Explorer SUV. Sharing the Lincoln Aviator’s chassis, it returns to a rear-wheel-drive architecture for better towing, with all-wheel-drive an option. 
Targeting a wide swath of buyers, the all-new Explorer will be available as a Hybrid, as a high-performance 400 horsepower ST, and even as a Police Interceptor Utility.
Crosstown rival General Motors focused on providing families with three row crossover luxury in the new Cadillac XT6. It’s a more car-like option to the still truck framed Escalade. Sharing basics with the GMC Acadia, a 310-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 and 9-speed automatic transmission make up the XT6 powertrain.
The big news at Fiat-Chrysler, was big trucks, with an all-new Ram Heavy Duty. Yes, it does have 1,000 lb-ft. of torque, with its available high output 6.7-liter I6 Cummins Diesel; and double-yes, it will out-power, out-tow…35,000 pounds worth…and out-haul all other pickups. The Ram Power Wagon returns too, here with an updated 6.4-liter HEMI gas V8.
Debuts from imports start with a car…the new Volkswagen Passat.  Most of its Tennessee-built underpinnings and drive gear remain the same, but the sleek new sheet-metal is a major departure, and we like where it’s headed. 
Perhaps even bigger news, was Volkswagen’s announcement of major expansion of the Chattanooga plant for upcoming EV models. With VW’s new Ford technology alliance, we might even see some future Blue Oval EVs made there.
Toyota officially unveiled the worst kept secret in car-dom, the all-new Supra, the first production car developed by Toyota’s GAZOO racing team. There’s still an inline-6 under the hood, only now it comes from Bavaria, as Supra shares a lot of its engineering with the BMW Z4.  That turbocharged mill cranks 335-horsepower, and will shuttle lucky owners to 60 in just over four seconds. 
Toyota sprinkled some of their performance dust on the Lexus RC F as well, with a new Track Edition; boasting 472-horsepower from its 5.0-liter V8 plus speed focused aero tricks and weight removal galore.
Subaru’s STI tuner arm rewarded their most ardent fans with the special edition STI S209, the first S-line performance car sold in America. It sports road-rally style chassis updates, a wide-body design, and a 341-horsepower 2.5-liter turbo boxer engine. 
Yes, the biggest Kia ever, the 3-row Telluride crossover utility is finally a reality. Sharing chassis with the Hyundai Palisade, it’s brawny body has room for 8, with plenty of V6 power to haul them, and their gear, to whatever active lifestyle stuff they get into.
Speaking of cousin Hyundai, they debuted the Elantra GT N Line. It launches a new series that fits between their full N brand performance cars, and everyday models.  Confusion to follow. 
This year’s Detroit show included more eye-popping concepts than usual. After showing a longer range Leaf e+ at CES, this Nissan IMs EV concept may predict a sleek electric sport sedan joining the mix.
Nissan’s Infiniti could be the next brand to unleash a full-EV SUV; and that could be just the beginning. This concept, the QX Inspiration, rides on an all-new platform that will be the basis for a wide range of electrified offerings.
Technically, this Lexus LC Convertible is a concept, but it looks ready for prime time to us.  It also looks like a no-brainer; and would easily be the car to be seen in on the streets in Southern California and South Florida.  
We’re told this crossover concept is a clear sign of what’s coming as GM transitions Cadillac to their lead electric vehicle brand.  Now, we didn’t actually see the vehicle, just these pictures, with no specific details, but Cadillac says stay tuned! 
We’ve seen this diesel-powered Mahindra Roxor Jeep-lookalike for some time now; and as you might imagine, FCA has issues with the design, and has taken the brand to court.  But for now, it’s off-highway use only for this little runabout; making it the perfect mashup of an old CJ and a new Side-by-Side. 
And it wouldn’t be a proper Detroit show without a Chinese car company saying U.S. sales are imminent. This year we have a 5-time return player as GAC Motor was back with its ENTRANZE EV concept, as well as production previews of several models including the GM6 minivan and the GS5 compact SUV.
