2019 Hyundai Santa Fe 2.4 and 2.0T First Test: Cooler Heads Prevail
This “First Test” actually marks the second time we’ve tested these two 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe variants, but the first time out—at our 2019 SUV of the Year festivities—conditions were so beastly hot in our high desert test location that we didn’t fully trust our results. Sure enough, the evidence suggests our 2.0-liter turbo Santa Fe was suffering a major case of heat stroke in the 98-degree swelter and thin high desert air.
The SAE J1349 weather correction formula we use to normalize all test results to room temperature dry air at sea level conditions has proven to be impressively accurate at correcting for widely variable conditions on naturally aspirated cars. It’s also proven competent at correcting for reasonable temperature and pressure deviations on turbo- and supercharged vehicles and hybrids. But when an engine and turbo intercooler circuit get too badly heat-soaked, the engine controller starts pulling spark advance to prevent knock, which is hard to compensate for with math. That’s when you end up with a 235-hp, 260-lb-ft turbocharged engine that can’t keep up with its 185-hp, 178-lb-ft naturally aspirated sibling.
All vehicles tested were loaded to Ultimate trim spec, and both the hot and cool 2.0-liter turbos feature HTRAC all-wheel drive while the 2.4-liter naturally aspirated cars are both front-driven. Despite still enjoying a 3.5-pounds-per-horsepower advantage on paper, in the desert the turbo trailed the 2.4-liter by 0.7 second to 60 mph (9.6 versus 8.9 seconds) and by 0.4 second and 1.5 mph through the quarter mile (17.1 seconds at 82.8 mph versus 16.7 at 84.3).
The results of our winter test session at California Speedway reverse that outcome, with the turbo beating its down-market sibling to 60 mph by 0.8 second (7.8 versus 8.6 seconds) and by 0.5 second and 4.4 mph in the quarter (16.0 seconds at 88.9 mph versus 16.5 at 84.5). Was the desert turbo’s poor performance entirely attributable to inadequate weather correction, or were other electronic or mechanical gremlins to blame? We may never know.
What we can say with greater certainty now is that the Santa Fe probably won’t win many drag races against its competitors in this burgeoning class of crossovers that are slightly larger and more substantial than the Tucson/RAV4/CR-V compacts without featuring third-row seating. (Hyundai had planned to sell a Santa Fe diesel with a tiny third row, but that idea has been shelved.) Prime competitors now include the Ford Edge and Nissan Murano, with the Chevy Blazer and Honda Passport arriving soon. Size- and/or price-wise the Kia Sorento and Dodge Journey could also be considered, though each offers a vestigial third row.
All Nissan Muranos get V-6 power that’ll run rings around the 2.0-liter turbo Santa Fe in any weather, logging 0–60 times in the low sevens. The base Ford Edge 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine outruns the up-level Santa Fe 2.0T by a tenth to 60, and of course the Edge ST’s 2.7-liter EcoBoost blows all competitors into the weeds (6.1 seconds). As for the Sorento and Journey, their V-6s are quicker than Hyundai’s 2.0T, and their naturally aspirated 2.4-liters are slower than Hyundai’s. We have yet to test a Blazer or Passport (they’re coming very soon), but both will feature V-6s and nine-speed automatics that look poised to dice with the Murano. Even the Blazer’s unboosted 2.5-liter four-cylinder rental-fleet powertrain boasts a 6 percent weight-to-power advantage over the 2.4-liter Santa Fe and nine transmission ratios versus Hyundai’s eight. Subjectively, a slight buzziness to the Hyundai engines compares unfavorably with the smoothness of the competitor V-6s, and sadly it’s not offset by a fuel economy payoff—at 19/24 mpg city/highway, the turbo is rated lower than most rival V-6s. (At 22/29 mpg, the 2.4-liter ranks near the top of the pack.)
On the handling front, the Santa Fe turbo’s lighter weight stands it in pretty good stead. The Santa Fe 2.0 outruns the mainstream Muranos and Edges around our figure-eight course with a 27.2-second elapsed time at an average g-vector of 0.63. (The Edge ST does the circuit in 26 flat at 0.70 g.) The pokier front-drive Santa Fe 2.4 on taller sidewalls (60-series 18s versus the 2.0T’s 55-series 19s) registered a back-of-the-pack 28.9-second, 0.58g lap time. Again, subjectively several editors found fault with the slow response and “fake torque” feel in both variants’ steering during lane-change maneuvers, and our figure-eight driver Walton reported copious body roll in both variants.
Buyers less concerned about their CUV’s performance in the cut ’n’ thrust of traffic will still delight in the Santa Fe’s interior packaging, which boasts best-in-class front seat spaciousness and the best ratio of interior passenger and cargo space to exterior body size. Hyundai also ladles on the safety and driver-assistance technology pretty liberally, as well, though the automatic emergency braking system needs recalibration. It will not allow the vehicle to follow closely in a line of traffic trying to make a left turn without repeatedly lurching to a stop, spilling coffee and throwing briefcases to the floor. Behavior of the adaptive cruise control system also seemed more timid and hesitant than usual about resuming a set speed after obstacles cleared.
Value remains a Hyundai strong suit, with prices ranging from $30,345 to $35,345 for the 2.4-liter Santa Fes and from $35,245 to $39,845 for the 2.0-liter variants—all of which can be had with front- or all-wheel drive. By comparison, Murano base prices run from $32,315 to $46,175 while Edges’ span from $36,390 to $43,450. Just be prepared to be a little patient in your Santa Fe turbo when the mercury soars.

GM refuses to back down from planned Oshawa plant closure, union vows to keep fighting
General Motors refused to budge from its plans to stop producing vehicles at the Oshawa Assembly Plant, yet Unifor Canada vowed to keep fighting to save the facility that employs nearly 3,000 people despite the apparent dead end.
GM and Unifor representatives met Tuesday at GM’s corporate headquarters in Detroit to discuss the union’s seven proposals to keep the Oshawa plant operating after GM announced in November it would stop allocating production to the facility in 2019 as part of a larger restructuring that will shutter eight facilities, including four in the U.S. GM expects the cuts will save $6 billion annually, money it intends to invest in “future technologies” such as self-driving cars and electric vehicles.
The union proposals included continuing to produce sedans at the Oshawa plant until a long-term solution could be found. It also suggested GM reverse a decision to move production of vehicles such as the Chevy Blazer to Mexico, where workers are paid less.
North America is at 'peak car.' What does that mean for Canada's remaining auto plants?
GM says it has 2,700 jobs for workers slated to be laid off
'A shame, a crime, a betrayal' — After 100 years, Oshawa faces life without its golden-ticket employer
But GM executives dismissed the proposals, stating in a letter to Unifor they would result in “substantial incremental costs and a further deterioration of GM’s competitive position.”
“Unfortunately, none of them were economically viable,” GM Canada vice-president David Paterson said in an interview.
Instead, GM proposed working closely with Unifor on transition plans for Oshawa workers, whether they are eligible to retire (approximately half are) or need training for new jobs. These “very generous” plans would include lump sum payments up to $60,000, new cars and retraining, Paterson said.
“We really would like to work with Unifor to focus on having an absolutely gold-plated transition plan,” he said when asked if there was any hope GM might change course.
“We understand they’re perhaps not ready for that discussion.”
Unifor is “deeply disappointed” in GM’s response, which Unifor president Jerry Dias refused to accept as defeat.
“We are not accepting the closure of our Oshawa facilities under any circumstance,” Dias said a news conference in Windsor after the meeting.
The decision would result in less than 200,000 GM vehicles built in Canada annually, yet GM expects Canadians to continue buying 300,000 vehicles per year, Dias said. He stopped short of calling for a boycott, but said Canadians are furious that GM wants to close the plant after Canada bailed out GM with nearly $11 billion in 2008.
“This is about greed,” he said.
Dias called on the federal and provincial governments not to accept the closure, adding he is “disgusted” by their silence on the matter given the potential hit to the economy.
Unifor is exploring its legal options, as its 2016 collective agreement with GM including a pledge to allocate product to the Oshawa plant until fall 2020. It also plans to hold a demonstration in Windsor on Friday.
The meeting came a day after Unifor launched TV advertisements lambasting GM for the slated closures on networks across Canada and in Detroit, where GM plans to close the storied Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant that manufactures the hybrid Chevy Volt.
Whether the union will have any luck convincing GM to stay in Oshawa remains to be seen, especially since GM hasn’t backed away from plans to shutter American facilities.
But Flavio Volpe, president of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association, won’t count out Unifor from getting some sort of deal.
“Until they turn the lights off, it’s always prudent to keep trying,” Volpe said.
Unifor got product allocated to Oshawa during the 2016 round of bargaining when many observers thought that was impossible, Volpe said.
On the question of public funding, Volpe said Canada shouldn’t dismiss the idea outright given the losses associated with closure. He noted that GM fulfilled its repayment obligations under the last bailout.
Despite Unifor’s campaign to save the facility, industry analysts and investors have responded positively to GM’s shakeup.
BMO Capital Markets cited the restructuring as a key factor on Monday when it upgraded GM to outperform and raised its price target to $41 from $38.
“We believe restructuring initiatives will further boost profitability and cash generation, while also improving cyclical resilience,” analyst Richard Carlson noted to clients.
BMO also credited the upgrade to GM’s self-driving unit, Cruise, which BMO will include in its valuation of the company for the first time.
“We expect a brighter spotlight to be placed on GM Cruise in 2019, leading to a more appropriate value for this business being priced into the shares,” Carlson wrote.
GM’s stock price rose three per cent after BMO’s upgrade on Monday, closing at US$34.82 on the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday.
Volpe acknowledged that investors have responded positively to the restructuring from a product perspective and capacity utilization perspective, but said GM is “so much more than the stock ticker.
“It is entrenched in communities across North America, including Oshawa,” he said. “It goes down to a deeper question of, does a commercial entity have an obligation to community loyalty.”

“It is entrenched in communities across North America, including Oshawa,” he said. “It goes down to a deeper question of, does a commercial entity have an obligation to community loyalty.”

Eight Fascinating Facts About the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer
The Bow Tie finally revealed the all-new 2019 Chevrolet Blazer last week in Atlanta, Georgia way ahead of its arrival at dealerships early next year. Chevy’s midsize mover will slot between the recently shrunken Equinox crossover and the full-size Traverse SUV.
Sure, they may all look similar but we think the Blazer’s sheetmetal is a little bit more stylish than its siblings. Here are eight interesting facts that we know about the all-new Blazer.
1. The base Blazer gets a 2.5-liter inline-four under the hood that offers 193 hp and 188 lb-ft of torque. Need more oomph? Get an optional 3.6-liter V-6 available that delivers 305 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission with start/stop technology. No hybrids are planned—at the moment.
2. Chevy claims its 3.5-liter V-6 powered Blazer can tow up to 4,500 pounds. Hitch Guidance is available with the V-6 option that helps align a trailer by utilizing the SUV’s rear-view camera. RS and Premier trims get twin-clutch AWD tech for better performance in all types of weather.
3. The Blazer rolls on standard 18-inch aluminum rims and RS and Premier trims get beefier 21-inch wheels. The SUV shares its C1 platform with the Cadillac XT5 and the GMC Acadia.
4. The five-passenger truck offers up to 64.2 cubic feet of cargo space. Its second-row seats can fold flat and there’s also an adjustable sliding rear seat.
5. Wireless charging and six USB ports are available; an 8-inch color touchscreen running Chevrolet Infotainment 3 is standard, and the system is also Android Auto and Apple CarPlay friendly.
6. RS and Premier trims sport a Chevrolet-first Cargo Management System with an adjustable rail system and cargo fence. The system helps secure smaller items by dividing up the cargo area.
7. The new Blazer offers an electronic-locking box with enough room for a small handbag/messenger bag. The glove box is accessible in the Settings menu and locks when Valet Mode is engaged.
8. The Blazer will be built in Coahuilla, Mexico at GM’s Ramos Arizpe facility along side the Equinox.
