Saturday Morning Coffee
Good morning from Charlottesville, Virginia! ☕️
I’m getting more and more excited about writing code full time at work. I’m sure that won’t last but I’m going to enjoy every minute of it while I can. 😃
I ran into issues getting my git SSH keys to work earlier in the week and while I find that frustrating it was also a nice challenge to fix. I’m up and running and ready to break some stuff! 👍🏼
I hope you enjoy your coffee and the links.

Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor has died at the age of 56, her family has announced.
The 80’s was my era of music and I most certainly remember Nothing compares 2 U, it was a big hit.
The thing that really struck me is, she was 56 years old. As I age my mortality has occupied more of my thoughts than I care to admit, but there you go.
God speed. ❤️

ChatGPT creator says AI advocates are fooling themselves if they think the technology is only going to be good for workers : ‘Jobs are definitely going to go away’
Emphasis is mine. I’ve not used ChatGPT but we’re pushing into AI hard at WillowTree. It’s such a hot button item at the moment all agencies will have to take it very seriously.
For my daily work I see it as a really smart auto complete. The next evolution in code assistant. It felt like cheating early on but as a developer you still have to validate the output. Did you get valid and good code? It may not work all the time. Yes, it’s fallible but it’s also early days. I am certain I’ll use it at some point to help generate some code.
Give it another 10 years to mature. I’ll be really close to retirement by then and the next next generation can use it to their advantage. 😃

According to General Motors boss Mary Barra, Chevrolet has backtracked on its plans to completely kill off the Bolt, which has so far seen its sales more than double in 2023. Now, the company is working on a next-generation Bolt, which will join Chevy’s other electric models: the Silverado EV, Blazer EV and Equinox EV.
I found this really encouraging! We need more little EVs in the market and I always thought the Bolt was a nice little car.
Hopefully the next generation gets its fire issues under control.
Oh, the only downside I can think of is Chevy’s insistence on building their entire infotainment system.

Dave Winer posted a 12-minute audio recording on his blog, addressed to me but applicable to everyone who is creating tools for the social web. Listening to it, I have a bunch of thoughts. In this post, I just want to start with server-to-server ActivityPub, and leave some of the other technologies Dave brings up for later.
Dave Winer has created a bunch of the technologies we rely on everyday in the blogging world; blogs, RSS, and Podcasting delivery. Now he’s trying to unify the mechanism to span posting to multiple social networks and blogging.
Manton Reece is the creator of Micro.blog — the service I use to publish this site — and is into open standards like MetaWeblog and ActivityPub, so much so Micro.Blog is a Fediverse server by federating with Mastodon.
To see these two chatting about putting something together to bride these systems is nice to see. I see what Dave is proposing as the next version of MetaWeblog, perhaps extended to accommodate new blogging and social network norms.
Perhaps Micropub could serve to do this? I’ve not looked into it but it seems like it could be the way to go?
I have my own opinions on the matter and I’m sure I’ll voice them at some point. In the meantime it’s nice to see this happening and I’m going to keep an eye on it. 👀
Robert Reich
Someone who has tried to overthrow the U.S. government cannot be president.
Mr. Reich is point out what may sound obvious at first but what he’s really saying is it shouldn’t take a conviction to eliminate TFG. We all know he tried to overturn a fair and valid election in 2019. We all know he rallied his supporters to storm the Capitol and try to stop the formality of recording the election results.
He doesn’t need to be convicted. He’s a danger to democracy and the rule of law. That’s disqualifying. ⚖️

I recall how, when I was a junior developer, I often felt happy and reassured when I was writing software. It felt like a safe place compared to the overwhelming complexities of the world. The simple, deterministic functions, mechanical in their way of working, offered comfort. If you inject an input, it always gives the same output. It’s controllable, manageable, uncomplicated!
If you’re good at what you do eventually someone will notice and give you more to do with greater responsibility. Eventually you’ll be mentoring people and more junior developers will naturally look to you for your experience.
It’s not a bad thing. It’s just what happens and isn’t isolated to software engineering. This happens in all fields.
While I enjoy working with Junior folks there’s also this big part of me that’s ready to sit in the corner and just work on features and bugs, and that’s all. A simplified dev life. 😃

Barbie not only broke box office records, she destroyed the GOP’s Barbie Boycott
Barbie isn’t a film I plan on seeing but it sounds like the GOP is once again up in arms over cultural issues dealt with in the film.
I hope it breaks all the records. 🎬

I was visiting my family in the Chicago suburbs recently, when my niece mentioned she saw “some TRON thing” sitting on a curb while she was riding her bike through the neighbourhood.
As a teen I remember well the arcade in Exeter. It was called the Quarter Slot. Ahhh, good times. Anywho, I will never forget the Tron game — not the one mentioned in the article — because there were two guys who spent a crazy amount of time playing it and taking copious notes on how to beat every level.
Yes, those were the days.

Threads has one big advantage over Twitter: Zuckerberg understands advertising
If Threads can pull people away from Twitter — I mean, ahem, X — does that help to extinctify the ailing bird?
Who knows. Musk is crazy rich so I’d imagine he can keep it afloat for a very long time.
All I want to know is when will he be selling Twitter.com and for how much? It would make for a great Mastodon instance. 🐘

The Alpine F1 Team is currently competing at each race weekend with the odds slightly stacked against them. The Renault power unit used by the French factory team is believed to be 30 horsepower behind their rivals. Under normal circumstances, Alpine would be told simply to improve on their own, but there’s currently a freeze on engine development. The FIA, the sport’s governing body, wants to allow Alpine to catch up.
Alpine is kind of what remains of the Renault team and it seems like they’re going backwards.
I’d love to see them move closer to the front of the pack but they continue to be one of the “back of the pack” teams with flashes of brilliance on rare occasion.
Formula One is an extremely tough sport to compete in. Teams with extremely deep pockets can buy great engineering and dedicate huge resources to land their teams in victory lane. It also makes the races really boring.
Here’s hoping Renault is given a chance to fix their horsepower issue ahead of next season. At this point I suppose it doesn’t matter much.
I’m a Haas supporter myself. It’s the only American team on the grid so why not support them? They also have Guenther Steiner who is the most entertaining of all the Principals in F1. 😃
Oh, by the way! Since you’re an American team why not use American built power? I mean, you run Ford motors Stuart Haas Racing, why not work with them on an amazing F1 power unit? I’d love to see that! Don’t let Red Bull be the only team doing it!
Who else is looking forward to the next season of Drive to Survive?

Apple has become the target of a £785 million ($1 billion) class action lawsuit on behalf of over 1,500 developers in the UK over its App Store fees, reports TechCrunch.
Unfortunately this is pocket change for Apple. I don’t make much as a developer of apps for Apple devices but to those who do giving up 15 to 30% of revenue is a big deal.
Even if Apple allow for third party stores or payment processors they’re still going to charge their fee. Might as well keep the App Store as it is and be done with it.

I’d always known Peet’s was a big influence in the coffee world but I had no idea how much of an influence it really was.

Candid Conversation: HW Special Features
Special features are pretty rare on Hot Wheels nowadays; they’re now mainly reserved for anything in the Experimotors series, and that’s a shame. But a few years ago... that was a completely different story. Today, I’m going to go through as many special features there are on Hot Wheels cars as possible. I may have missed some.
Opening hoods
This was a bit of a no-brainer. The Hare Splitter acting as the header image kind of gave it away. Opening hoods have been with the Hot Wheels lineup since 1968.
Examples '67 Camaro (1982 — Present, removed in 2017) ‘69 Dodge Charger (2004 — Present, removed in 2010) Classic Cobra (1982 — Present, removed in 2020) ‘80s Corvette (1983 — 2016, removed in 1996) Countless others
Hidden headlamps
Something not a lot of people know is that there was a Hot Wheels car with hidden headlamps. I have handled one of these before, courtesy of a friend.
Examples Peeping Bomb (1970 — 1973, Redline)
Sliding doors
And now we get some ridiculous features such as side-sliding doors. Two Hot Wheels cars have had this feature, and both were activated through pulling something on the rear.
Examples Side Kick (1972, 1998 — 2012) Slide Kick (2019 — Present)
Opening rear hatches
These have also been a staple of the Hot Wheels lineup. The first car with one of these rear opening hatches came out in 1969 I believe; the Chaparral 2G.
Examples Chaparral 2G (1969 only) Porsche 917 (1971 — 2011) Ferrari 512M (2006 — 2013) Ferrari F40 (1988 — 2014, removed in 2014)
Opening doors
This feature was fairly standard from the mid-’80s until the early ‘90s; it is now very uncommon for castings to have opening doors.
Examples Nissan Custom “Z” (1990 — 1997) Nissan 300ZX (1984 — 1996) Blazer 4×4 (1984 — 1996) Split Decision (2006
Opening tonneau covers
I’m pretty sure only one casting has this feature.
Examples Dodge Ram 1500 (2007 — Present, removed in 2017)
Flip-out wheelie bars
These are often made of either hard plastic or a flexible plastic. Most of these have been removed.
Examples Nitro Doorslammer (2007 — 2011, removed in 2012) ‘49 Drag Merc (2010 — 2015) ‘41 Willys (2000 — 2014) Torpedoes Willys Coupe (2006 only)
Tip-up bodies
Found mainly on funny cars. Some may flip open in other directions, like Lakester.
Examples ‘97 Firebird Funny Car (1997 — 2014) Probe Funny Car (1990 — 2004) ‘04 Mustang Funny Car (2004 — 2011, retooled into ‘10 Mustang Funny Car) ‘71 Mustang Funny Car (2004 — Present, removed in 2019)
Detachable bodies
These are usually attached through tabs through the front and back. These castings don’t appear too often, and most castings with this feature have since had their bodies nailed down.
Examples Mini Cooper (2000 — Present, removed in 2015) Hyperliner (2002 — 2013, removed in 2014) Volkswagen New Beetle Cup (2002 — 2016, removed in 2009) Scion xB (2006 — 2016, feature still on Color Shifters car)
Suspension
What may be surprising to some is that suspension for Hot Wheels cars has been around for a long time. Since 1968, in fact.
Examples Most Redlines from 1968 — 1977 ‘70 Dodge Charger (2017 — Present) Dune-A-Saur (2018 — Present) Hyper Rocker (2019 — Present)
Adjustable suspension
This one though... only came recently.
Examples 1969 Chevy C10 (2019 — Present)
Opening trunks
Another highly uncommon feature. Opening rear doors will also be included in this section.
Examples ‘55 Chevy Panel (2006 — Present, removed in 2016) Armored Truck (1996 — Present, removed in 2013) Ambulance (1989 — 2003)
Functioning tow hooks
Another thing to increase playability for kids, too. These usually work pretty well. There are two types I can think of: the “rivet” type (hooks onto the rivet) and the “fender” type (hooks onto the bottom of the fender).
Examples Tow Jam (1998 — 2012) Repo Duty (2013 — Present) Heavy Hitcher (2019 — Present)
Pivoting/rotating parts
Especially common on fire trucks. May be found on certain construction vehicles
Examples Flame Stopper (1988 — 2010, pivoting and rotating hose) 5 Alarm (2009 — Present, pivoting ladder) Volkswagen Drag Truck (2004 — 2015, flip-up panel) CAT Wheel Loader (1980 — 2014, operating bucket, removed in 2010)
Other spinning parts
These can range from propellers to cement drums and other things.
Examples Dogfighter (1996 — 2007, propeller) Oshkosh Cement Mixer (1992 — 2002, spinning cement drum) Fathom This (1998 — 2007, turbines)
Spinning fans
As far as I know there are only three castings with this feature. This feature has generally not been very common.
Examples Whip Creamer (1971 only) Whip Creamer II (2003 — 2011) Mega Thrust (2006 — Present)
Opening canopies
There are a number with this feature, though this feature has generally been somewhat uncommon.
Examples Road Rocket (1996 — 2015, removed in 2015) Power Rocket (1995 — Present, removed in 2015) Preying Menace (2006 — 2015, removed in 2015) Sky Dome (2017 — Present)
Removable roofs
Fairly common around the ‘70s and ‘80s but slowly fell in popularity soon after.
Examples ‘31 Doozie (1977 — 2003) Mercedes-Benz 540K (1982 — 1999)
Twisting bodies
As far as I’m aware, there’s only one casting with this feature. Later toolings have this feature removed.
Examples XS-IVE (2001 — 2009, removed in 2010)
Functioning ramps
These ramps often slide around and can be pretty easy to lose since they are snapped on.
Examples Cabbin’ Fever (2000 — 2012) Back Slider (2010 — 2014) Fast-Bed Hauler (2014 — Present) The Embosser (2017 — Present)
Adjustable splitters
These only came about rather recently to combat some issues that came about around 2014 or ‘15 when it came to realistic castings being made with front splitters that curved upwards to allow them to clear loops. This was rectivied starting from 2016. The splitter could be set downwards for a more realistic look or upwards to clear loops.
Examples 2005 Ford Mustang (2016 — Present) El Viento (2017 — Present) Track Ripper (2018 — Present) Gruppo x24 (2019 — Present)
Tipping beds
Currently somewhat uncommon.
Examples Ford Stake Bed Truck (1983 — 2001) Ford Dump Truck (1983, 2010) Peterbilt Dump Truck (1983 — 2003) Dumpin’ A (1979 — 2012)
Folding wings
Now this is where things start to get ridiculous.
Examples Jet Threat 4.0 (2007 — 2016)
Functioning clip
Yes, Hot Wheels cars do have some use too.
Examples Fast Cash (2011 — Present) Clip Rod (2020 — Present)
Multi-tool
Some of these may function as multi-tools, but I have not tested out the wrench function. I will also need to find a Speed Driver so I can confirm stuff.
Examples Tooligan (2010 — Present) Speed Driver (2020 — Present)
Extending body
I’m pretty sure only one casting has this feature.
Examples Spector (2007 — 2018, removed in 2015)
Stamping
Again, it’s likely that only one casting has this feature.
Examples The Embosser (2017 — Present)
Rolamatic
These castings have something that moves as it rolls. The concept has been around for a long time but Hot Wheels only adopted it fairly recently.
Examples Crate Racer (2016 — Present, engine shakes) Shark Bite (2016 — Present, mouth moves) Gotta Go (2017 — Present, toilet cover moves) Rockin’ Santa Sled (2020 — Present, rider bobs up and down)
LEGO-compatible
More shameless product placement is good... right? (other brands of interlocking building blocks are available and should also be compatible)
Examples Fig Rig (2013 — Present) Let’s GO (2015 — Present) Bogzilla (2018 — Present) Pixel Shaker (2020 — Present)
Rolling upside down
Okay, this was probably unintentional on Hot Wheels’ part.
Examples Nitro Scorcher (2007 — 2014)
...bottle opener?
Okay, I’m done. Nothing will ever top this.
Examples Carbonator (2008 — Present)

Chevy Blazer Conflict 😬______________________________________ [4/1/19] Ok everyone back to real news! GM is under fire in its hometown of Detroit that stems back to their recent mass layoff plans of US factory workers. They were forced to remove the 2019 Chevy Blazer that was on display at Comerica Park because UAW workers were offended that the Blazer is being built in Mexico and not in the US. GM put the American built Traverse up instead where it is built at the Lansing Delta Township plant! 🔥 @Allcarnews Spec Sheet: The Blazer should be a hot selling crossover as it comes with N/A 4cylinder making 193HP and 188 lb-ft of torque but you can get a 3.6L V6 making 305HP and 269 lb-ft of torque in higher trims! 🔥 This issue is big for UAW workers but from a business point it makes more sense to build the Blazer in Mexico where labor is cheaper than the US, but workers aren’t having it! The Blazer actually is an impressive crossover with sharp and muscular styling, a nice camaro inspired interior and prices ranging from $30k to $50k! Some may complain it’s not the same true SUV TrailBlazer of the pst but i’m sure this will sell like crazy for GM... if the UAW doesent get in the way further. ________________________________________ ACN EXTRA: Should they make a 400HP TT V6 Blazer SS ?? 🤔 ________________________________________ - - #Chevy #Blazer #V6 #GM #UAW #Cadillac #USA #crossover #Mexico #SUV #workers #drive #carbon||#powerful #performance #turbocharged#supercharged #advanced#SupercarsRevamped #Supercar#HyperCar #ItsWhiteNoise #CarLifeStyle#MadWhips #CupGang #Carstagram#BlackList #AmazingCars247 An #allcarnews posted https://www.instagram.com/p/BvuyYGNnDWn/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=fkbtxg8gipve

“Inhumane”: a laid-off GM worker in Ohio responds to massive job cuts
GM says that more than 14,000 auto workers will lose their jobs in the coming months.
General Motors caused an uproar this week when it announced plans to close up to five factories in the US and Canada and cut more than 14,000 jobs over the next two years.
The automaker said that consumers weren’t buying enough cars like the Chevy Cruze, and that the overhaul would save the company $6 billion. GM also blamed President Donald Trump, whose tariffs on imported steel have cost the company $1 billion.
GM’s decision sparked a backlash from lawmakers in Canada and the United States. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) called it “corporate greed at its worst,” pointing out that GM received millions in corporate tax cuts but failed to use the money to invest in its workers. Instead, the company recently announced plans to build its new Chevy Blazer in Mexico — a decision that frustrated US labor unions that want those jobs to go to American workers.
Trump was also reportedly furious about the decision. GM produces electric cars, and buyers in the US can get a federal tax break for purchasing one. So Trump threatened to cut those subsidies for GM vehicles (which he can’t do without Congress).
As lawmakers and company executives continue to point fingers and try to deflect the blame, I reached out to Nanette Senters, a 55-year-old woman who has spent the past two decades working at GM’s Lordstown plant in Warren, Ohio, where the Chevy Cruze is made.
Senters sobbed quietly on the phone as she told me how distressing the news has been for her and thousands of her co-workers who will lose their jobs. She is single but helps support her 84-year-old mother. She was also angry, she told me — at GM, at Trump, and at all the American companies outsourcing jobs abroad.
A lightly edited transcript of our conversation follows. (As of press time, GM had not responded to Vox’s request for comment.)
Alexia Fernández Campbell
How long have you been at the Lordstown factory, and what’s your job there?
Nanette Senters
I’ve been here 20 years. I’ve watched [the factory] shrink tremendously; I was here when the government saved us from failing [during the Great Recession].
I work in the body shop; it’s basically the metal assembly division. I assemble pieces and parts in the car doors. I work like a human robot every day, but none of us mind working hard. We have good benefits and pay.
Alexia Fernández Campbell
Did you have any idea that layoffs were coming? How did you find out?
Nanette Senters
No. I was shocked. At 9:30 in the morning on Monday, we were all called into the break room, and they put on a video saying that the plant would be shuttered in March 2019.
Alexia Fernández Campbell
Who was the person in the video?
Nanette Senters
I don’t know, some bigwig from GM.
Alexia Fernández Campbell
Then what happened?
Nanette Senters
There was a loud gasp. People started crying. All day long, people were crying. Then we just started getting angrier and angrier. We’ve done so much for this company. This is such an inhumane way to treat people.
Alexia Fernández Campbell
Who do you think is responsible for this? GM says there’s just not enough demand for the Chevy Cruze.
Nanette Senters
There’s a lot of blame to go around. I blame a lot of it on our president. I think it all started when Trump repealed the [Corporate Average Fuel Economy standard].
The CAFE standard meant that you could produce small cars that are energy-efficient and that would kind of balance out the building of big trucks and gas guzzlers. Building the Cruze meant that GM could also build many big trucks and still meet fuel efficiency standards.
When Trump repealed the CAFE standard, that gave GM more of an incentive to get rid of the Chevy Cruze and do this restructuring.
Then there’s his trade wars and his unfinished trade deals, which are hurting the entire country. Ford, Chrysler, Honeywell — they are all outsourcing good union jobs. The jobs being created are not good-paying jobs. They are $12-an-hour jobs.
Alexia Fernández Campbell
How much do you earn?
Nanette Senters
I make $30 an hour.
Alexia Fernández Campbell
Did you hear anything about GM moving more jobs out of the country, or to the Cruze factory in Mexico?
Nanette Senters
We weren’t told anything. It’s all so sketchy. Then we were told that we might be able to transfer to another job, that there will be 3,000 new GM jobs. But that means 11,000 of us will be left out in the cold.
Alexia Fernández Campbell
Trump has threatened to punish GM for closing the factory. Are workers hopeful something will change?
Nanette Senters
All of the president’s rhetoric has divided the workforce horribly. I was here when Trump had a rally here last summer. He said, don’t sell your house, do not worry about that. I am going to bring jobs back.
I didn’t believe him. From day one, I could see what he was — the way he managed to give people false hope. A lot of people are still hoping he will save them now. It’s disturbing.
Alexia Fernández Campbell
What do you think of GM’s position: that the company needs to do this to remain financially viable?
Nanette Senters
I’m sure GM is probably just preparing itself for a potential recession. But they can do it more humanely.
To just say, “You’re done,” is wrong. Yes, a company is supposed to make money. But they did get all kinds of money from those tax cuts, and they are still doing this. I am so disappointed. They always take things out on workers.
Alexia Fernández Campbell
Are you getting severance pay?
Nanette Senters
Yes, thank god for our union. We have a union guarantee of nine months of pay after March, and we can keep our health care. But it will be about 90 percent of our pay, and it cuts a lot of benefits. We won’t be getting bonuses or any profit sharing.
Alexia Fernández Campbell
What are you going to do after that?
Nanette Senters
I am going to try to transfer to another plant. If that doesn’t work out, I will go back to school. I am a single woman, and if I have to move to Indiana or something, it will be hard to take care of my 84-year-old mother.
Alexia Fernández Campbell
Can you find another job around Warren that pays $30 an hour?
Nanette Senters
No, not in this area. There are not good jobs here. It’s a very depressed area; this factory has the best jobs here. People talk about the steel mills in the area, but those only pay $12 an hour.
Alexia Fernández Campbell
I’ve heard that some GM workers are asking Trump to cancel government contracts with GM and other companies that outsource jobs. What do you think of that?
Nanette Senters
It’s a good idea, and we’ve sent him letters. But Trump is not willing to put his money where his mouth is. And so many of my co-workers, around half of them, are still pinning all their hopes on Trump. I hope I’m wrong. I hope he does do something about the thousands of jobs companies are still sending abroad. But he hasn’t done anything about Carrier, Honeywell, or Harley-Davidson.
Basically, since he’s been in office, it has been an assault on good-paying jobs. What he’s doing is not translating into anything good for middle-class America.

Chevy resurrects Blazer as tech-savvy, sporty crossover
The 2019 Blazer is expected to go on sale early next year in three trims -- base, RS and Premier. ATLANTA -- General Motors, aiming for more gains in the booming American market for utility vehicles, is resurrecting the venerable Chevrolet Blazer nameplate as a tech-savvy, yet sporty, crossover. The new midsize Blazer, which GM last produced in 2005 as a body-on-frame SUV, will slot between Chevrolet's compact Equinox and large Traverse crossovers -- both of which were redesigned for 2018 and helped GM post record U.S. crossover sales last year. "The introduction of the all-new Blazer builds on that momentum and further strengthens the most comprehensive lineup of crossovers and SUVs on the market today," Alan Batey, president of GM North America and head of Chevrolet's global business, said in a statement. U.S. consumers are migrating from cars to crossovers, and Chevrolet hopes to capture more of those buyers by offering another utility in a key segment dominated by the Honda Pilot, Ford Edge, Nissan Murano, Hyundai Santa Fe and Subaru Outback. From 2013 to 2017, U.S. sales of midsize crossovers increased 24 percent, according to the Automotive News Data Center. The segment has expanded 4.4 percent through the first five months of 2018. 3 trims The 2019 Blazer is expected to go on sale early next year in three trims -- base, RS and Premier --and introduce a simpler trim strategy for the brand. The trims, GM says, will offer "distinct styling," including custom grille appearances and chrome. {{title}} {{abstract}} Read more > {{/content}} The five-passenger crossover has been designed in line with recent vehicle updates in Chevrolet's lineup but adopts a much more aggressive, sculpted approach. It features a prominent dual grille similar in shape to that of the refreshed 2019 Camaro SS and sleek, horizontal LED daytime running lights between the headlamps. John Cafaro, executive director of Chevrolet design, said the vehicle was styled with "attitude" while "fulfilling the promise of versatility at the heart of every Chevy crossover and SUV." Powering the front-wheel-drive vehicle will be a standard 2.5-liter inline-four engine rated at 193 hp and 188 pound-feet of torque. A 3.6-liter V-6 engine is also available, offering 305 hp and 269 pound-feet of torque. Both direct-injected engines feature intelligent stop-start technology and are paired to a nine-speed transmission. The Blazer's maximum trailering load is an estimated 4,500 pounds with the V-6 engine. GM will produce the Blazer at a plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, alongside the Chevrolet Equinox crossover and Chevrolet Cruze hatchback. It is based on GM's C1XX regular-wheelbase crossover platform, which also underpins the Cadillac XT5 and GMC Acadia. A longer wheelbase is used on the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse and 2018 Buick Enclave. Pricing will be announced closer to the start of production in the fourth quarter. In May, U.S. transaction prices for new midsize crossovers and SUVs averaged $38,175, according to Kelley Blue Book. Tech Traction Select is standard on all models and allows real-time adjustments to the vehicle's driving mode. On all-wheel-drive models, it also allows the system to be completely disconnected from the rear axle, meaning drivers can opt to have their vehicle operate in fwd when awd is not needed. An advanced twin-clutch awd system will be available on RS and Premier models. Inside, the vehicle will come standard with an 8-inch color touch screen with Chevrolet Infotainment, 4G LTE Wi-Fi and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. On RS and Premier models, a new Chevrolet cargo management system, with a rail and cargo fence to help secure smaller items by dividing the cargo area, will come standard. Available features (mostly available on RS and Premier) include advanced hitch guidance systems, electronic-locking glove box, heated outboard rear seats, adaptive cruise control and wireless charging. 1970s roots GM introduced the K5 Blazer name in 1969 as part of the famed Chevrolet C/K truck family. The automaker says it has sold more than 8 million Blazers, with annual U.S. deliveries routinely topping 200,000 from the mid-1990s through 2000, according to the Automotive News Data Center. The nameplate was discontinued in early 2005 amid sluggish demand for truck-based SUVs, rising gas prices and a shift in consumer preferences to sport wagons or crossovers. http://www.autonews.com/article/20180621/OEM04/180629938/2019-chevy-blazer-crossover-unveiled

A weekend trip in the new Chevy Blazer
The shapely and sporty 2019 Chevrolet Blazer RS handles like a dream on the winding mountain roads of the Hudson River Valley. (Talisman Photo)
Only a short drive away, the Hudson River Valley boasts beauty and fun all year long. On a recent sisters weekend away, I had the opportunity to spend time in Hyde Park, Stone Ridge, Rhinebeck and other towns in the area and can’t think of a better location for a leisurely getaway. I also had the opportunity to drive Chevy’s new Blazer and can’t think of a better car to explore the artsy, mountainous villages of the Hudson River Valley in.
Our trip began as most road trips do—by loading luggage into the car, or in this case, the stylish crossover SUV. The cargo area of the Blazer is equipped with a rail that slides forward and backward and locks in place. This ingenious feature is great for keeping a suitcase or two in place during a long drive and perfect for keeping grocery bags or sports equipment from rolling around during day-to-day activities.

Welcome to the CIA
Hyde Park is known as the hometown of Franklin D. Roosevelt. His Springwood Estate, the FDR Presidential Library and Museum, as well as the Vanderbilt Mansion, are preserved as National Historic Sites just two hours away in Dutchess County. You know what else is just two hours away? The Culinary Institute of America.
The CIA, as it is affectionately known as, is a four-year college and culinary school where the top restaurateurs of the country graduate from. The Hyde Park campus operates four public restaurants, including American Bounty, a contemporary farm-to-table restaurant with a focus on regional ingredients.
The lunch menu features dishes Roasted Sage Kobocha Gnocchi, Charred Citrus Salad and Grilled American Beef Wagyu Culotte, which are as beautiful to the eyes as they are delicious to the taste buds. The desserts—Warm Caramelized Apple, Chocolate Mousse Cake and Tres Leches Panna Cotta—are miniature works of art on a plate.

Students at the CIA get hands-on experience at the restaurants and are constantly making connections between different areas of study. A student with a background in engineering named Joe sagely related the MAYA principle—Most Advanced, Yet Acceptable—to food design and car design. The father of industrial design Raymond Loewy developed this blueprint for delivering the future gradually and palatably to the masses.
“It’s this idea that the newest best thing that’s going to appeal to the most people is a balance between the furthest you can go without scaring people away,” Joe said. “I’m sure it’s a lot with car design too, the balance between aesthetics and use.”
The Chevy Blazer fits this principle perfectly. Designer Steve McCabe and his team endeavored to edge Chevy design into the future with sporty styling choices not typically seen on SUVs. The design turns heads—in a good way.
Chef Bruce Mattel, senior associate dean of culinary arts at the CIA, also added to the concept of how far one can go with food design.
“If you’re too avant garde with food, some people are going to be intimidated,” he said, and this principle is reflected in the dishes he serves with innovative flavor combinations, a focus on texture interplay and artful plating that enhances the dining experience.
American Bounty changes its menu seasonally. There’s no excuse not to journey there quarterly to check out what new flavors they have in store.

Home Away From Home
Hasbrouck House has everything you could want in a weekend getaway. Established in 1757, the Dutch Colonial stone mansion is hidden among the trees of Stone Ridge, NY, and offers modern, luxury accommodations in a historic setting.
Guest rooms, lofts and suites are dispersed between the main building, the Stable House and the Carriage House, in addition to a private house called The Cottage. Though featuring the same soothing color palette, rich furnishings, large windows, Frette linens and goose down pillows, no two rooms are alike.
My favorite touches are the in-room Nespresso machines, Aesop toiletries and heated marble floors in the bathroom.
During your stay, I recommend booking an appointment with one of Hasbrouck House’s massage therapists or yoga instructors in the Wellness Room. A yoga session with Pepper will give you the opportunity to check in with yourself and feel more relaxed and renewed than you may have thought possible.

The 50-acre property contains walking trails down to a private lake. It’s a lovely walk even with snow on the ground to get some fresh air and quietude.
For dining, you need look no further than Butterfield, the in-house restaurant and bar. Ingredients are locally sourced and the dishes epitomize farm-to-table cuisine. Simplicity is key and no more evident than in the shishito peppers appetizer. The tender peppers when blistered and sprinkled with coarse mustard salt are perfection.
After dinner, you can spend some time with a drink by the fireplace in the Club Room, or play a round of pool or darts in the Game Room downstairs. The arcade game machine, loaded with classics like Pac-Man and Asteroids, is a fun bonus. These are the best spaces to interact with other guests of the house.
Every guest is treated like a VIP at Hasbrouck House, a true gem of the Hudson River Valley.

Make your mark
Nearby Rhinebeck has a flourishing arts and culture scene. Dive right in at Hudson Valley Pottery and Ceramics School.
Most of us have worked with clay in elementary school, whether it was making pinch pots or small sculptures. It’s easy to forget how much fun it is unless you’ve gone back to it as an adult and realize that ceramics is as much an art as a craft.
At a class at the pottery studio, we were given a tutorial on hand-building a mug, then unleashed on the clay and tools to bring our individual visions to life. Hand-building is good for beginners, while using the wheel requires more practice and skill. Everyone in the class enjoyed the time spent the studio and look forward to seeing our finished projects post-firing and glazing.

Though it may seem unexpected, clay is an integral part of the car-design process. Following the initial sketches, clay sculptors make small models of the car. Changes in the surfacing are made and rendered back into a digital form. Later, a scale model is made with clay where designers can see if those lines and curves that looked great on the small model still look great life-sized.
McCabe credits the clay sculptors he works with with making him look good. Curves that read to the consumer’s eye as simple and sleek are actually the result of a complex collaborative process between artists.
McCabe also notes that clay is easy to work with, relatively inexpensive and recyclable, which makes it the perfect material for auto design as well as good choice for a hobby.
Make an appointment at Hudson Valley Pottery for a private lesson, or open studio time if you’ve got some experience under your belt. Judi Esmond and her wonderful staff will help you tap into your creative side.
Lead Creative Designer Steve McCabe highlights unique design features of the Blazer. (Talisman Photo)
Form and Function
‘Form follows function,’ the foundational principle associated with architecture and industrial design that states the shape of a building should primarily related to its intended purpose, can also be applied beyond those fields. In food, the form is the visual and the function is the taste. No chef wants to sacrifice good flavor solely to improve the look of the meal. In pottery, a beautiful-looking mug with an uncomfortable-to-hold handle is not functional for its intended purpose. Examples can be found all around.
The Chevy Blazer sports this principle perfectly in its interior with round vents. According to McCabe, there was a big debate during the design process whether to do a rectangular or a trapezoidal shape, or a round shape reminiscent of the Camaro, which the Blazer was modeled after.
In order to justify using an older vent style, the design team decided to make it functional. The round rim acts as the temperature control, making for an intuitive and slightly futuristic design feature. It was the first thing I noticed when I sat in the driver’s seat—my hand went straight for the vent instinctively.

“From a styling standpoint, we’ve reached ahead a little,” McCabe said.
The Blazer is offered in the signature model, the sporty RS and, for the more formal buyer, the Premiere.
“The RS captures that sports car personality. We injected that Camaro DNA into it,” McCabe said.
As a young father, he feels he’s created an exciting loophole in the market—a bold, dynamic, responsive sports car with the spaciousness and features of a family-oriented SUV that he’s not ashamed to put a car seat and stroller in.
“I can get the best of both worlds with this vehicle,” he said, another place where form meets function.

Exploring The Hudson River Valley
Each hamlet of the Hudson River Valley has a personality all its own. Woodstock’s bohemian spirit is fun to explore. The friendly staff at Hasbrouck House can show you the route that takes you over the Ashokan Reservoir, where you can park the car and take pictures of the scenery.
Fruition Chocolate, which is available at Hasbrouck House, has its storefront on Tinker Street in Woodstock, where you can sample the small batch, handcrafted, bean-to-bar chocolates and bring a few bars home as souvenirs.
Also stop into the Garden Café, a vegan restaurant and juice bar on Old Forge Road, and try the Indian chickpea blinis with cashew date chutney—little savory pancakes packed with flavor that redefine what a pancake can be.

To get away from it all or get some of that adventure you’ve been craving, spend a day hiking, biking or climbing at Mohonk Preserve. The mission of the sprawling nature preserve is to protect the Shawangunk Mountains region and inspire people to care for, explore and enjoy their natural world.
The Chevy Blazer handles amazingly well on windy, snowy mountain roads and has a tighter than expected turning radius, which stands up to the test on New Paltz’s angular, often one-way, streets.
New Paltz is another fun destination while you’re in the area. Lagusta’s Luscious offers artisanal chocolates in flavors like tahini cream and thyme preserved lemon sea salt caramel, while its sister cafe, Commissary, makes a mean cheese plate.
To cap off the weekend, visit the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art on the SUNY New Paltz campus. In addition to its permanent collection, works by Angela Dufresne and an exhibition celebrating the 150th anniversary of the founding of Mohonk Mountain House are on display through mid-July.

Chevrolet Blazer Convertible? Check Out This Sexy 1970 Blazer Custom
There’s no classic truck that exposes more of its interior than a Chevy Blazer with its top taken off, and that’s exactly why Larry Ashley and his crew at TMI Products of Corona, California customized this two-wheel drive 1970 Chevy Blazer for the 2016 SEMA Show.
As the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer bursts onto the crossover scene winning comparisons and impressing editors, appreciate the nameplate’s past with this awesome story on a custom truck-convertible from Classic Trucks, part of the Hot Rod Network.
The SEMA Show, held annually in Las Vegas, is where TMI Products rolls in deep each year with an array of show cars to wow folks in the industry with its latest and greatest interior designs and exterior cosmetic enhancements. The Southern California company made its name offering custom interior packages for Ford Mustangs, Chevy Camaros, VW Bugs, and then quickly expanded into Ford and Chevy pickups.
Since TMI already offered a comprehensive line of Chevy C10 interior pieces the easy part was deciding a two-wheel drive Chevy Blazer would be the hot ticket for SEMA; but finding a two-wheel drive Chevy Blazer to build wasn’t quite so easy. It took Larry months of searching before he ran across a 1970 K5 Blazer on Craigslist, and then it was a race to pay full asking price before another person in hunt of a Blazer beat him to the punch.
The Blazer’s build, excluding taking care of the upholstery work and laying on the body and paint, was entrusted to RnG Customs, Classiscs and Fabrications of Hesperia, California. Don’t let RnG Customs’ misspelling of classics fool you, Ron and Gabe can really get down and knock out some cool stuff. Starting from the chassis up it was a no-brainer the 1970 K5 needed to be dumped deep in the weeds in order to give SEMA goers a bird’s-eye view of the truck’s full-custom TMI interior.
The stock 1970 Chevy K5 chassis received a C-notch and then CPP 2 1/2-inch drop spindles with RideTech air ride suspension was installed. The braking system was upgraded significantly to Baer Brakes four-wheel disc brakes with 14-inch six-piston calipers in front and 12-inch four-piston calipers in the rear. The Blazer’s 12-bolt rearend was given a total go-through by J&S Gear Co. of Huntington Beach, California. For rolling stock in front, American Racing VF 498 bronze satin lip 20×9 wheels were stuffed into 265/35-20 Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 tires, and in the rear American Racing VF 498 bronze with satin lip 22×10 mounted with Continental 285/30/22 ExtremeContact DWS 06 tires were fitted.
The previous owner modernized matters under the K5’s hood and transplanted a 5.3 plucked from a 2008 Chevy Silverado. Then under TMI’s ownership a host of ancillary performance upgrades were added that included a K&N air filter and Doug Thorley headers paired to Flowmaster mufflers. Full instrumentation from Dakota Digital keeps an eye on how all drivetrain systems are running, and an Odyssey battery keeps the 12V juices flowing.
The K5’s exterior got the TMI sport products treatment with a host of new trick goodies debuting at SEMA for 2016. In front it took a combination of TMI’s air dam combined with a Brothers chrome smoothie bumper and HIDprojectors.com headlights to get the right look. Going topless full time was made to look cleaner by installing a TMI windshield frame cap and TMI bedside filler caps. The butt end of the Blazer was capped in style with a chrome smoothie rear bumper from Brothers.
Johnny’s Auto Color of Riverside, California, did the custom paint and bodywork on TMI’s SEMA Blazer. The DOT marker lights and tailgate were shaved, and then answering Larry’s request to “give it a nostalgic feel with a modern twist” Johnny’s two-toned the K5 PPG root beer brown and Champagne Gold.
The crowning glory of the K5 Blazer is its TMI Products custom interior kit. It took a very short six months time from tooling up to manufacture Blazer custom upholstery kits to when this 1970 Chevy Blazer drove onto the 2016 SEMA Show’s floor. Starting from the floorboards up TMI guys laid down Heatshield Products’ thermal mat and sound insulation, and then installed TMI Products’ German weave carpeting. The front seats are a pair of TMI Classic Pro Series buckets done in vinyl with a rear seat covered to match. Also color-keyed to tie in is a TMI Sport R steering wheel, padded TMI Sport XR dash cover, door panels, and rear inside quarter-panels.
Pondering the Blazer’s build Larry recollected, “About two days before leaving for SEMA I got a text from the seller wanting to know how the Blazer came out. I sent him a few pictures and he asked if he could buy it back. I said ‘I’m sorry man, but this Blazer will be on the show circuit for sometime.’ I guess he must have gotten back together with his ex, or met a new girl, who knows?”

2019 Chevrolet Blazer RS First Test: The Camaro of Crossovers
I have to imagine it wasn’t supposed to be this way. There have been rumblings from inside Chevrolet for years that the automaker was planning a sporty new midsized crossover to compete with the Ford Edge. Inspired by the Chevrolet Camaro, this new crossover was supposed to do for the CUV what the Ford Mustang did for muscle cars—jump-start a new branch of its segment that younger buyers would flock to. I bet you names like “Camaro Cross” were bandied about—new names for a new vision. And then Chevy went ahead and undid all that hard work by naming its CUV the Blazer. That’s too bad, because the surrounding controversy from bringing that beloved nameplate back from the dead has distracted from what the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer RS is: a shockingly good crossover.
Rather than build a faithful recreation of its classic off-roader to go up against the Jeep Wranglers of the world, the modern-day 2019 Blazer instead aims to democratize the performance crossover—a segment that’s mostly been dominated by German luxury brands—by turning up the heat on vehicles like the Ford Edge.
At first glance, things don’t exactly look promising for the Blazer. Ignoring the racy sheetmetal and a cabin that liberally borrows from the Camaro parts bin, the Blazer rides on the decidedly non-sporty Equinox’s platform and is powered by either a 193-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder with front-drive or, in the case of the RS, GM’s corporate 3.6-liter V-6 paired with a nine-speed automatic and all-wheel drive, making 308 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. Forgive me for not getting particularly excited about the above specs, but weirdly it all works.
It’s quite apparent from the get-go that the Blazer oozes personality—the exhaust note alone is more pony car than people mover—and the Chevy has the performance to cash the checks its body is writing. The Blazer’s V-6 and nine-speed automatic are the stars of the show. The former has plenty of power and is quick to rev, while the latter is smartly geared and shifts quickly. The Blazer isn’t half bad through corners, either. A rear-drive crossover will likely leave the Chevy in its dust, but for what it is, the Blazer’s steering is responsive and accurate, and its chassis is composed and incredibly difficult to upset, both through bends and on rough pavement.
Test numbers bear that out, too. Our Blazer AWD RS tester accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds and runs the quarter mile in 14.7 seconds at 95.5 mph. Its crosstown rival, the Ford Edge ST, sports significantly more horsepower and torque than the Blazer RS (335 hp and 380 lb-ft), but it only barely keeps up, tying the Blazer’s 0–60 and quarter-mile times but actually lagging behind 2.1 mph in trap speed. The 300-pound-heavier Ford does edge (sorry) the Chevy out in braking and handling tests due to its performance-tuned suspension and stickier tires, though; the Blazer’s best 60–0 stop came in at 126 feet, and its best figure eight lap was a respectable 27.1 seconds at 0.65 g average. The Edge ST did the former in 108 feet and the latter in 26.0 seconds at 0.70 g. We’ll have to line the two Detroit pony crossovers up for some back-to-back tests to really figure out who has the upper hand.
Looking beyond the performance, the Blazer is a pretty compelling package so long as you don’t look too closely at the Blazer’s material quality. The Camaro-inspired cabin surprisingly feels quite organic in this CUV, and the Blazer even sports the Camaro’s vent-mounted A/C controls and its downward-facing high-resolution infotainment screen. The Blazer, being a crossover, is decidedly more practical, with actual storage for drinks, phones, and other knickknacks spread through the front of the cabin. Open the 90-degree-opening rear doors, and Chevrolet has taken care of rear passengers, too. They get a flat floor, a rear bench that reclines and slides forward and backward—perfect for babies or pups—heated seats, HVAC vents, and power ports to stay charged up. And although the cargo area is smaller than some other midsize crossovers in its class due to its rakish roofline, the Blazer’s trunk makes good use of the space it’s got with a wide opening and low lift-over height.
Prices for the 2019 Blazer start at $29,995 for the base four-cylinder front-wheel-drive model, but a Blazer RS like our tester will cost you a fair bit more than that. V-6-powered Blazer RS AWD models start at $44,695, but our loaded tester would set you back $48,270—just high enough that some smart shoppers might find themselves wandering into Alfa Romeo, BMW, or Mercedes-Benz dealers to check out similarly priced examples of the Stelvio, X3, and GLC.
The Blazer name may be a distraction, but it’s ultimately attached to a surprisingly compelling crossover. It’s doubtful that the 2019 Blazer will ever have the cultural impact the Camaro has had, but regardless, it’s a stylish, relatively sporty crossover with the substance to back up its style.

2019 Chevrolet Blazer Interior Exterior - Perfect Mid Size Suv
via IFTTT 2019 Chevrolet Blazer Interior Exterior - Perfect Mid Size Suv the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer, everything started with the styling. The low, wide and sporty crossover put on paper by designer Jawook Koo obliged engineer Larry Mihalko's vehicle performance team to produce a final product that drives with an athleticism to match its appearance. "We're car enthusiasts," Mihalko said, clearly indicating that getting a mandate to create an actually sporty utility vehicle was exciting, and almost a relief. The resulting mid-size crossover is indeed sportier than both the segment norm and Chevrolet's other SUVs. While its Equinox and Traverse siblings are rather anonymous in their styling and driving experience, the 2019 Blazer, by contrast, draws inspiration from the lively Camaro. There's no missing the similarities. It's most obviously inside with the rotary knee-level climate controls/vents and the shape of the touchscreen above. The exterior doesn't have the same literal translation – Koo purposely steered clear of overt styling cues like the 2013 Malibu's Camaro taillights. There's enough shared styling DNA to give it a Camaro vibe: similar rear-quarter window line and sharpened hips below, plus the RS trims' comparable glossy black trim. It's about cohesion rather than nesting doll similarity, and Chevrolet would be wise to build upon this to foster a stronger brand identity. But in general, it's as much about the Blazer's low, wide stance and colossal wheels that fill up the fenders in a similar Hot Wheels-like manner. Great, but does it drive like a Camaro? Well, don't expect power slides and rear-wheel-drive dynamics as the Blazer still runs on the same front-drive platform as the Cadillac XT5 and GMC Acadia. However, it's 40mm wider than its platform mates and an inch lower. The MacPherson strut front and five-link multilink rear suspension have been tuned, and successfully so, to reduce body roll. Portman, Brown Press For Answers From GM on Future of Lordstown Plant, Supply Chain Impacts
Both Ohio Senators have Committed to Continuing to Push GM to Keep Workers on the Job
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Rob Portman (R-OH) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today penned a letter to General Motors CEO Mary Barra in which they demanded answers on the future of the Lordstown plant. The Senators have continually urged GM to invest in this highly productive facility, rather than shutter its doors. In the letter, they demanded answers on the potential job and supply chain impacts should GM decide to pursue its disastrous decision to close the plant. The Senators argued that Lordstown workers, their families, and the impacted communities need to have the information necessary to prepare for any consequences of GM’s announcement.
“As GM continues to evaluate the company’s next steps with respect to the Lordstown plant, it is critical that the workers and communities affected by any company decisions understand the short- and long-term implications of the announcement and its full impacts. Only with complete information can the Mahoning Valley – as well as the numerous Ohio businesses and communities who stand to lose jobs and investment as part the Lordstown closure – effectively respond to, and recover from, changes to production at Lordstown,” Portman and Brown wrote in their letter.
Portman and Brown met with Barra last week following GM’s announcement that it would lay off its final shift of workers and close its Lordstown plant in March of 2019. Both Ohio Senators have urged GM to work with them to save these Lordstown jobs.
Earlier this year, GM announced plans to build the new Chevy Blazer in Mexico on the same day the company ended the second shift at a plant. GM has eliminated nearly 3,000 jobs at the plant over the last two years.
A copy of Portman and Brown’s letter to GM appears below:
December 11, 2018
Mary Barra
CEO
General Motors Company
Detroit, Michigan 48232
Dear Ms. Barra:
Thank you for meeting with us last week. We are pleased that you committed to keeping an open mind about Lordstown’s future, and we are committed to working with you to find a way forward that would bring another product or products to the Lordstown plant.
As we discussed, we are deeply disappointed in GM’s announcement to discontinue vehicle production at the plant. For more than 50 years, Lordstown has been an important part of GM’s success, and just this year J.D. Power ranked the plant number one for the highest quality production among GM’s facilities. Given Lordstown’s history and effectiveness, we disagree that this facility should be shuttered simply because the product is uncompetitive. Instead, we believe this makes Lordstown an excellent candidate for a more competitive vehicle and urge GM to invest in this facility.
We note with concern that GM has increased its Mexican-based production in recent years, including of the Blazer, and we ask you to consider Lordstown as an alternative assembly facility for vehicles intended for U.S. consumers. We believe Lordstown is well-suited to manufacture SUV or cross-over vehicles or next generation cars.
As GM continues to evaluate the company’s next steps with respect to the Lordstown plant, it is critical that the workers and communities affected by any company decisions understand the short- and long-term implications of the announcement and its full impacts. Only with complete information can the Mahoning Valley – as well as the numerous Ohio businesses and communities who stand to lose jobs and investment as part the Lordstown closure – effectively respond to, and recover from, changes to production at Lordstown. To that end, we request that GM provide comprehensive answers to the following questions.
Current Status of the Lordstown Plant
Given the high rankings earned by Lordstown, what factors – other than poor sales of the Chevy Cruze – contributed to GM’s decision to unallocate this facility in particular?
Given that GM made the decision to unallocate Lordstown unilaterally, why has GM suggested – which you reinforced in our meeting – that GM cannot unilaterally reverse this decision?
What is the average amount of time that unallocated GM facilities remain in that status?
What factors will GM take into consideration in determining whether to allocate another vehicle to Lordstown? Will Lordstown’s status as GM’s top performing plant for quality according to J.D. Power 2018 data be taken into consideration?
If GM ultimately makes the unfortunate decision to close Lordstown, how much will it cost the company to shut the facility? How long is that process expected to take?
Job and Supply Chain Impacts
In our meeting, you mentioned that there are only 1,000 laid off employees company-wide. This seems inconsistent with the data we have on the second and third shift Lordstown workers. Please provide a breakdown of the status of the currently laid off Lordstown workers (i.e. whether they have retired, were relocated to another plant, or are still looking for work).
All suppliers to Lordstown will be affected by this announcement in some way, therefore what are the names and locations of the Chevy Cruze Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers that GM expects to be adversely affected, and in particular those disproportionately so, by the decision?
What is GM’s estimate of the number of layoffs at those supplier companies as a result of Lordstown’s upcoming unallocated status?
In our meeting, you agreed to keep us up to date on Lordstown’s status. Will you commit to communicating openly to Lordstown employees, the Cruze supply chain companies, and the affected communities about the future of the plant throughout the unallocation process?
How many Ohio workers will lose their jobs– both at GM and throughout the supply chain – if GM goes through with the 8,000 announced layoffs in 2019?
Future of the Lordstown Plant
GM has justified the layoff announcement by saying the company plans to move away from small cars and increase its focus on next generation vehicles, like electric and autonomous cars. Does GM expect to produce electric vehicle sedans or will it focus on producing electric SUVs or crossover vehicles?
What would be the cost, if any, of retooling the plant to produce an electric vehicle of comparable size to the Chevy Cruze?
We have seen a video of the groundbreaking of the brand new paint shop being built at GM’s Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico, presumably for the Blazer. What is the cost of building that new paint shop?
Will you commit to producing in the United States all of GM’s electric vehicles for sale in the United States?
Please respond to these questions no later than December 21, 2018. We want Lordstown workers, their families, and the impacted communities to have the information they need to prepare for any consequences of GM’s announcement. We appreciate your willingness to keep an open mind about the future of Lordstown. GM could decide today that Lordstown will remain an important asset in the company’s future, and we hope you do so. We are committed to working with you to keep the plant open.
Sincerely,
###

Chevy to Kill Off Impala, 2019 Volt, and Cruze – Close 5 Plants
These are strange times indeed the two major automobile manufacturers, General Motors, and Ford recently announced they would be selling electric bicycles and scooters in the very near future, and killing off most of their passenger car lines. Narrowing it down to General Motors plans for the future Mary Barra said she wants people to think of “GM as a tech company by the time she retires.” And maybe moving the general non-car enthusiast public into robo-taxis and on electric bicycles might not be such a bad idea.
Getting back to the two brands, Ford will continue to build Mustangs, and Chevrolet has made no mention of killing off the Corvette, or Camaro. Looking at things optimistically there’s a future where the could care less about car a masses would use public transportation freeing up the roads for people that love to drive able to move freely in less traffic.
No matter what GM’s recent announcement to lay off 14,000 workers and close up to five North American manufacturing plants indicates there is going to be a lot growing pains herding the public into robo-taxis and self-driving cars (formerly called autonomous autos).
Quoting the AP (Associated Press) story directly, “General Motors will cut up to 14,000 workers in North America and put five plants up for possible closure as it abandons many of its car models and restructures to focus more on autonomous and electric vehicles, the automaker announced Monday.
The reductions could amount to as much as 8 percent of GM’s global workforce of 180,000 employees.
The restructuring reflects changing North American auto markets as manufacturers continue to shift away from cars toward SUVs and trucks. In October, almost 65 percent of new vehicles sold in the U.S. were trucks or SUVs. That figure was about 50 percent cars just five years ago.”
Maybe just an urban myth, but its been said General Motors made more money on selling replacement parts than selling cars. The AP (Associated Press) story reported, “GM is shedding cars largely because it doesn’t make money on them, Citi analyst Itay Michaeli wrote in a note to investors.
“We estimate sedans operate at a significant loss, hence the need for classic restructuring,” he wrote.
The reduction includes about 8,000 white-collar employees, or 15 percent of GM’s North American white-collar workforce. Some will take buyouts while others will be laid off.
At the factories, around 3,300 blue-collar workers could lose jobs in the U.S. and another 2,600 in Canada, but some U.S. workers could transfer to truck or SUV factories that are increasing production. The cuts mark GM’s first major downsizing since shedding thousands of jobs in the Great Recession.”
General Motors is building two eBikes which will be available for sale in 2019 and we want customers to be involved from the start so we’re asking enthusiasts from around the globe to help name our eBike brand by visiting eBikeBrandChallenge.com
Many of those who will lose jobs are now working on conventional cars with internal combustion engines. Barra said the industry is changing rapidly and moving toward electric propulsion, autonomous vehicles and ride sharing, and GM must adjust. She said GM is still hiring people with expertise in software and electric and autonomous vehicles.
GM will stop producing cars and transmissions at the plants through 2019. In all, six car models were scrapped, leaving the company with nine remaining car models.
The automaker said it was ending Chevrolet Volt production because the vehicle was meant to be a bridge to fully electric cars when it was introduced about a decade ago. The Volt has a small battery that can take it about 50 miles, then it switches to a small gasoline engine (Editors note: that charges the battery)
Since it was introduced, battery technology has improved dramatically. Now the full-electric Chevrolet Bolt can go up to 238 miles on a single charge. GM builds full-size Chevrolet and GMC pickups in Mexico, and it recently announced that a new Chevrolet Blazer SUV would be built there. Also, GM imports the Buick Envision midsize SUV from China.”
Associated Press writers Rob Gillies in Toronto, John Seewer in Toledo, Ohio, and Zeke Miller in Washington contributed to this report.

Chevrolet is raising the bar on crossover design with the introduction of the 2019 Blazer as the newest member of the industry’s broadest, freshest crossover and SUV lineup since 2015. The all-new contemporary midsize SUV is rooted in attention-grabbing design with seamlessly integrated customer-focused technologies and superb functionality. “Chevrolet has been at the forefront of each of the major automotive industry trends by anticipating consumer demand and delivering innovative products like Bolt EV, Colorado and Trax,” said Alan Batey, president of GM North America and head of Global Chevrolet. “The introduction of the all-new Blazer builds on that momentum and further strengthens the most comprehensive lineup of crossovers and SUVs on the market today.” Slotting between the Equinox and Traverse, the 2019 Blazer will offer unique design elements on each model, appealing to customers seeking distinctive styling and outstanding utility. Highlights include: Bold styling that features a strong grille and muscular proportions. Driver-centric interior and distinctive looks on all models. Model range includes sporty RS and up-level Premier models. Five-passenger seating with up to 64.2 cubic feet (1,818 L) of max cargo space with second-row seats folded flat. Adjustable sliding rear seat. Available Chevy-first cargo management system with a rail system and cargo fence. Available panoramic dual-pane power sunroof. Suite of available active safety features. Standard 2.5L I-4 and available 3.6L V-6 engines, each backed by a nine-speed automatic transmission. Advanced twin-clutch AWD system available. 4,500 pounds (2,041 kg) estimated max trailering with the available 3.6L V-61. Available Hitch View feature that helps the driver align the hitch with the trailer. An SUV With Attitude The 2019 Blazer is the boldest, most progressive expression of the Chevrolet crossover design theme. A wide stance, tight proportions, a high beltline and dramatic sculpting give it a toned, athletic appearance from all angles. “The Blazer has attitude,” said John Cafaro, executive director, Global Chevrolet Design. “It looks commanding on the road, while fulfilling the promise of versatility at the heart of every Chevy crossover and SUV.” Each model in the lineup offers a unique look with distinct styling to suit different customers’ tastes, including unique grille appearances, additional bright chrome on the Premier trim and a more sinister-looking, blacked-out appearance for the Blazer RS. A powerful front end featuring a strong grille, athletic hood lines and low-placed HID headlamps distinguishes all models. The design also features a distinctive lighting execution that separates the headlamps and LED daytime running lamps. Long, lean and sculpted body sides lead to a rear end highlighted by LED-illuminated Chevy-signature dual-element taillamps, dual exhaust outlets and an integrated tailgate spoiler. The Blazer also offers a range of stylish wheels, starting with standard 18-inch aluminum rims and expanding to available 21-inch wheels on the RS and Premier. The Blazer’s cabin echoes the bold exterior theme with sporty good looks. The design emphasizes space, craftsmanship and customer personalization, with a wide range of interior styling choices for the different models, achieved through several color and trim choices. Sporty details include a padded knee area, round air vents and grab handles on the doors. The new Blazer also offers a Chevrolet-first Cargo Management System, standard on RS and Premier models. It features a rail system and cargo fence to help secure smaller items by dividing the cargo area. Seamless Technology and Connectivity The 2019 Blazer is designed to offer occupants seamless connectivity, intuitive controls and a host of convenience features that help make the drive more comfortable. - - - - #SaudjaMotocar #Chevrolet #Chevrolet Blazer Help Us For Better Subscribe our channel : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmoip5oiNN6y32ZoSXqHbLg?sub_confirmation=1
