A BMW ampliou a instalação de painéis solares em sua fábrica em Araquari, Carolina do Sul, para promover a produção de energia limpa. Esta é a terceira vez que a empresa acrescenta 20% de cobertura solar ao salão de montagem, totalizando 1.902 painéis em uma área de 9.940m2.

Embora os veículos produzidos na fábrica, incluindo o sedã 320i e os SUVs X1, X3 e X4, ainda não sejam eletrificados, a BMW afirma que poderia produzir cerca de 650 unidades por ano usando apenas energia solar.

A BMW informou que a sua fábrica em Araquari está alinhada com as metas do grupo em relação à redução das emissões de CO2, tendo como objetivo diminuir em pelo menos 80% a produção de cada veículo, em 20% a cadeia produtiva e em 50% o uso de energia.

Para atender ao projeto do estado de Santa Catarina, voltado para o monitoramento da flora e fauna, bem como para a redução do consumo de energia, água e resíduos, a unidade conseguiu reduzir seu consumo de energia em 22%, o uso de água em 29% e o desperdício em 80%, durante os anos de 2019 a 2021.

Além da eletrificação de modelos, há uma crescente demanda por uma produção mais limpa de componentes e veículos completos. Para os veículos elétricos, a bateria é um grande foco de desenvolvimento, mas, em geral, o modelo precisa consumir menos energia e ser mais eficiente para atender às expectativas dos consumidores.

Quando carregados com energia renovável, os veículos elétricos emitem significativamente menos CO2 do que os veículos movidos a combustíveis fósseis. No entanto, se forem carregados com energia proveniente da matriz energética global, que ainda é dominada pelos combustíveis fósseis, as emissões de CO2 aumentam consideravelmente e o benefício ambiental é praticamente nulo.

De acordo com um estudo da Volvo, os veículos elétricos precisam percorrer cerca de 109.000 quilômetros para compensar as emissões geradas na sua produção, alcançando assim o mesmo nível de eficiência ambiental dos veículos movidos a combustíveis fósseis.

Contudo, se o veículo elétrico for abastecido apenas com energia limpa, é possível atingir a sustentabilidade total em um período mais curto, cerca de 48.000 quilômetros rodados, significando uma redução de até 30% nas emissões de CO2.
