Almost 50% of students are nonreligious via /r/atheism

Almost 50% of students are nonreligious Generation Z is the least religious generation in American history. And, they are becoming less religiously identified as each year passes. In 2019, 46.7% of Generation Z had no religious affiliation. In 2022, the share of Generation Z with no religious affiliation is 48.5%, according to the Cooperative Election Study. It is statistically justifiable to say that by the time the United States has another presidential election, half of Generation Z will identify as atheist, agnostic, or nothing in particular. Every day in the United States, thousands of religiously conservative members of the Silent and Boomer generation are dying off. At the same time, thousands of members of Generation Z are celebrating their 18th birthday, becoming official adults. With nearly half of young people religiously unaffiliated, this generation of young Americans could be the first generation in the US to switch from the majority being religious to the majority being nonreligious - changing American religion and society in ways that we can only begin to understand. About 80% of student members of the Secular Student Alliance come from religious families and households. From a new study published in Psychology of Religion and Spirituality, formerly religious individuals are more likely to experience a lack of belongingness compared to those who were never religious, and this feeling of not fitting in predicts an increased tendency to conceal their nonreligious identity by keeping it separate from their public persona. Students like these join the SSA to find a sense of belonging, are less likely to conceal their nonreligious identity, and become advocates for secular values in our society.
