So for the return of the V60 Cross Country for 2020, we packed our long johns and fur-rimmed hats and headed to a fairy tale land of ice and snow to test its mettle. Temperatures were in the -17 degree Fahrenheit range just south of the Arctic Circle. Ironically back home in the U.S., Detroit was registering -11, nearby Chicago was -23, and parts of Minnesota registered an eye-popping -48 courtesy of a Polar Vortex that brought frigid air down from Canada.

For northern Sweden, icy temperatures are the norm, which resulted in ice so thick on the Gulf of Bothnia this year that when we attempted to measure it, the depth exceeded the normal 32-inch measuring tool and we were left to guess how much deeper it went. The Gulf, which stretches to neighboring Finland, and other frozen bodies of water served as ice roads and handling courses for our two days of frozen fun with the newest Cross Country.

We had a fleet of T5 AWD models with the turbocharged version of the 2.0-liter engine in all Volvos. It generates 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The U.S. will only get the T5 powertrain with an eight-speed automatic transmission, but we found the power to be more than adequate.

Our T5 was outfitted with Michelin X-Ice North studded tires. Ice caught in the wheels created an imbalance that made it hard to really gauge the vehicle’s on-road manners. Much of our evaluation was centered on how well the wagon handles snow and ice. The Cross Country has almost 8.3 inches of ground clearance compared with 5.8 inches on the regular wagon. Some of that comes from bigger wheels (we were on 235/45R19); the rest is from the raised chassis. A track extender allowed Volvo to set the wheels about 1.2 inches wider. The wheelbase remains the same as the regular V60.

The Cross Country has 8 percent softer spring rates to prioritize comfort over rough roads. It has a control-arm front suspension, but where bigger brother V90 Cross Country has rear air suspension, V60 Cross Country gets a transverse composite leaf spring at the rear axle, which kept the cruising comfortable in all conditions. The electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering was tuned to match the elevated chassis and made both control and drifting easy tasks. Although we were on 19-inch wheels, the Cross Country is also available with 18s and 20s in Europe.

All-wheel drive is standard on the Cross Country. No buttons to push; it’s an updated version of the fifth-generation BorgWarner (formerly Haldex) system. The improvements largely reduced weight and cost while making it more fuel efficient.

The T8 we drove briefly had Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 studded tires and the telltale grabby brakes of a hybrid. The plug-in felt heavier and not as spirited to drive. Nor is its battery-only range groundbreaking at only 27 miles, though it beats the XC90’s 19 miles on electricity alone. Push a button for permanent all-wheel drive to be engaged with the help of the gas engine augmenting the electric motor already supplying power to the rear wheels.

What is it? As you can see, this is the five-door wagon version of the new Audi A6. Outside of Europe, the Avant hardly plays a role, but here in particular, dealers are longing for this car. The five-door A6 is probably the most important vehicle for Audi next to the A4 Avant. Add the brand-new 2.0-liter, four-cylinder TDI (and more) to the bill and you’ll know 90 percent of all new A6s will roll out of the factory. Now, there is the additional problem that the competition in this class is incredibly strong and mature. The BMW 5-Series, Mercedes E-Class, and Volvo V90 are all great, extremely capable wagons in their own way. In other words, this Audi had better be darn good. The 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed has been and gone. While the headlines were dominated by Sennas, Supras and a V8-powered one-off Cygnet, a quieter, more refined celebration of speed slipped through the automotive shadows. 

If you’ve had a close eye on Swedish car industry over the last decade (and I’d forgive you if you haven’t), then you’ll already know the name Polestar. They’ve been giving standard Volvos a bit more punch since 2010, and in 2013, launched their first production models, in the S60 and V60 Polestar. Never released in the UK, these slightly-more-spritely models were the last contribution Polestar made to Volvo’s road-going lineup.

Yep, you guessed it. Until now.

The Polestar 1. A 600-horsepower greyscale jewel in Volvo’s crown. With a 330-horsepower 2.0 litre engine powering the front, and two 110 hp electric motors at the back, this car represents a significant step towards Volvo’s all-electric future. Although, not quite. Like Citroen and DS, or Toyota and Lexus, Polestar will be the performance wing of Volvo. doubling-up as a proving ground for hybrid and EV technology.  While Polestar is technically independent of Volvo, the 1 is unquestionably part of the same family as the XC90 and V90 that we know and love. The wide, rectangular grille, and T-shaped headlights are more than a nod to the Volvo parent brand. However, is still evidence on the surface of Polestar’s more performance-y focus. The 1 is lower and wider than the S90, and will feature active aero, a thin wing at the rea which deploys when the car decides you’re having too much fun, which is clearly against Polestar’s Swedish roots.  Underneath, it’s the same story. The car is based on the same platform as the S90, but with a largely carbon fibre body, torque vectoring, and obviously, that drivetrain to rival a BMW M5. The bodyshell saves 230kg from the S90, balancing out the battery and motors, which add around 203kg to the Polestar’s mass. So far, we haven’t had official performance figures, but expect a 0-60 in the region of 4 seconds, and a top speed of 155 mph plus. 

The interior is typical Volvo, all Swedish refinement and none of that hideous button clutter. A wonderfully calming place to be, when barrelling through dense Swedish woodland. 

The 1 is the only hybrid that Polestar will make. According to Polestar boss Thomas Ingenlath, all future Polestars (and there’s already a 2 and a 3 in the pipeline) will be pure EVs. Even as a hybrid, though, the 1 has a quoted ellectric-only range of 90 miles, enough to go from Basingstoke to Slough and back completely guilt-free.

As with everything though, there are drawbacks. Polestar’s debut will cost upwards of £135,000, making it about £8,000 more expensive than that electric-performance benchmark, the Tesla Model S P100D.  However, you won’t ever own your Polestar. Alongside this step towards Volvo’s EV future, it has decided to pioneer a step towards change in the future of car ownership. Instead, you will spec and order your car online, leasing it for 2 or 3 years on a flat monthly fee. This includes insurance, servicing (Polestar will pick up and return your car themselves), and access to rest of Volvo’s range, should you need something a little smaller, or more SUV-shaped, for a few days. Any charges from this would be added to your monthly charge. Although, if you prefer a hands-on approach to your purchases, Polestar plan to open 80 ‘Polestar Spaces’ globally, to sell its cars. Eight of these are expected to come to the UK. If you are still interested, be aware that the Polestar 1 will only be available in left-hand drive, due to small production-numbers, and not wanted to inflate the price any further, by adding development costs. 

Even so, this was the car that, for me, shone through the magical haze of Goodwood, in all its matte grey glory. Production will begin in 2019, and for those who can’t wait that long, the car configurator is already up and running on Polestar’s website (www.polestar.com/configurator/).
