2021 Volvo XC90/S90/V90/V90 Cross Country First Look: Updated for More Swedishness
Volvo’s ’90-series’ models are the brand’s flagships, and as such the XC90, S90, V90, and V90 Cross Country represent the biggest and best from the Swedish brand. For 2021 they’re getting a number of updates to keep them competitive against rivals like Mercedes and BMW. We covered a few of the car models’ changes previously, but for the sake of a recap we’ll include them here and add new details, such as U.S.-market pricing.
Both the S90 and XC90 Recharge—that’s Volvo’s new name for its T8 plug-in-hybrid electric vehicles, as the T8 badge is retired—get a major price cut for 2021. The XC90 Recharge is now $64,445 at base—a $3,550 reduction compared to the 2020 T8—and that’s before a possible $5,419 federal tax credit is applied. The S90 Recharge is now $3,150 less expensive than it was last year, and will start at $61,045 in 2021, again, before the tax credit.
The price difference between Volvo’s T6 and the plug-in-hybrid Recharge trims has been made considerably smaller for 2021. In 2020, the gap between the XC90 T6 and T8 was $10,700, but in 2021 it’s been brought down to $6,500, and a similar discount has been made to the S90. In 2020 the S90 T8 was $9,550 pricier than the T6, but for 2021 that price delta is now jut $5,400. Clearly this is to incentivize buyers to reach for pricier trims, but a Recharge is now a much better value than a T8 was in 2020 thanks to additional standard equipment.
The S90 sedan and both wagon variants get minor styling refreshes for 2021. The S90 gets a new grille with inner slats, a full-width chrome strip at the bottom of the car’s front fascia, a new trunklid with a more distinct lip spoiler, and redesigned taillights that Volvo says gives the car a “more technical and more premium” look. Volvo also has redone the rear ends of the S90 and friends, removing the exhaust finishers and hiding the tailpipes in a signal the brand is moving ever closer to full electrification.
For 2021, the V9o Cross Country gets rid of the plastic trim on its doors for a cleaner aesthetic, sports a new grille, and gets a redesigned front fascia whose lower portion now juts forward instead of tucking under for a slightly tougher look, Volvo says. The car also has new wheels and a larger, more pronounced faux skidplate at the back that also loses the previous model’s exhaust finishers. The less rugged V90’s exterior is largely unchanged from 2020 with the exception of some redesigned taillights and a front end matching the S90’s. Both wagons also get some new dashboard materials and the interior air vents have been slightly redesigned. Those vents do move air from a beefed-up filtration system that can now deal with particles as small as 2.5 microns across.
The XC90 gets small updates for 2021, too. There is a new six-seat interior option with captain’s chairs where a three-place middle row would normally go, and a Lounge package adds massaging seats. There are also new materials for the interior, including a wool blend. That might sound small, but wool is more luxurious than it sounds—it remains cool to the touch and doesn’t capture odors the way normal cloth does.
All of Volvo’s 90-series cars have the Premium package as standard, as well as blind-spot monitoring, LED lights that bend to illuminate corners, and a wireless charger for smartphones. Volvo is also adding new wheel designs across the 90-series range and a “Connected Safety with slippery road and hazard-light alert” function for 2021—essentially, connected Volvos give each other a heads up when they have encountered a dangerous driving condition or are stopped with the hazards on.
The Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system has been upgraded with a new amplifier, a new dome tweeter, a new “Jazz Room” audio-field option (modeled after an actual jazz club in Volvo’s Gothenburg hometown), and new continuum cones that all aim to improve occupants’ listening experiences.
The plethora of small changes and large discounts look like they’ll continue to make Volvo an interesting, well-designed, and slightly offbeat alternative to other, more mainstream luxury brands going into 2021.

La Volvo XC40 è il Suv compatto della gamma Volvo 2020 e il primo modello del marchio svedese ad avere conquistato il prestigioso riconoscimento europeo di “Auto dell’Anno”. Insieme ai modelli più grandi, Volvo XC60 e Volvo XC90, completa la gamma dei Suv Volvo.
Da un punto di vista stilistico, la Volvo XC40 si distingue per un forte design grafico, un’immagine di robustezza e qualità e un’indole più giocosa in termini di colori e materiali. Alto il livello di sicurezza a bordo, con tante tecnologie disponibili.
Per quanto riguarda i motori, la Volvo XC40 è equipaggiata con i propulsori diesel e benzina della gamma Drive-E di Volvo, abbinati a un cambio automatico a 8 rapporti o manuale a 6 rapporti. La Volvo XC40, inoltre, è il primo modello Volvo che utilizza il nuovo motore a tre cilindri sviluppato dalla Casa (il primo della storia del costruttore).

VOLVO XC60
La Volvo XC60 è il Suv medio a 5 porte e 5 posti della gamma Volvo 2020. Seguendo l’esempio della precedente, la seconda generazione della Volvo XC60 si è rapidamente affermata come modello più venduto della gamma Volvo.
La Volvo XC60 propone, all’anteriore, il linguaggio stilistico fiero e sicuro tipico di Volvo, abbinandolo a spunti che fanno parte della tradizione della Casa. I tratti distintivi principali includono gli iconici proiettori a Led, contraddistinti dal profilo luminoso ispirato al “Martello di Thor”, la nuova griglia frontale con stemma Volvo in acciaio e l’uso espressivo della scritta “Volvo” sul retro della vettura.
All’interno, da evidenziare alcuni particolari stilistici dal design sobrio e di gusto prettamente scandinavo, che contribuiscono ad innalzare il livello della classe di appartenenza.
Sul fronte dei motori, la Volvo XC60 offre varianti diesel e benzina, oltre all’unità T8 Twin Engine di Volvo, ovvero un motore ibrido plug-in benzina abbinato a una trasmissione automatica a 8 rapporti.
Con la nuova Volvo XC60 2020, inoltre, debutta il sistema di recupero dell’energia cinetica in frenata, abbinato ai motori endotermici esistenti. Questo sistema mild hybrid è contrassegnato dalla lettera “B”, introdotta di recente nella nomenclatura dei motori Volvo. I clienti possono scegliere fra un B5 mild hybrid nella variante benzina o diesel, un B4 mild hybrid diesel e un B6 mild hybrid benzina.

La Volvo XC90 è il Suv a sette posti di grandi dimensioni della gamma Volvo 2020. Di fatto, rappresenta l’ammiraglia del marchio. La linea esterna della vettura è stata ottimizzata per il Model Year 2020 introducendo nuovi cerchi, nuove tonalità della carrozzeria e una nuova griglia dal look moderno.
Motori diesel e benzina, ma anche versioni ibride plug-in. Debuttano pure le varianti mild hybrid (questi nuovi propulsori elettrificati garantiscono un risparmio di carburante fino al 15% e riduzioni delle emissioni nella guida reale).

La Volvo V60 è la station wagon media a 5 porte e 5 posti della gamma Volvo 2020. Confermando il dna di Volvo quale costruttore di auto che uniscono una linea gradevole con la praticità quotidiana, la V60 va ad arricchire il pedigree della Casa nel segmento delle vetture familiari, in grado di soddisfare le varieesigenze e adeguarsi alle diverse situazioni d’uso di una famiglia moderna.

Ispirandosi alla lunga tradizione di Volvo nel segmento delle familiari (iniziata oltre 60 anni fa con la Volvo Duett), la V90 alza il livello delle wagon di lusso in termini di estetica, materiali e finiture, restando al contempo fedele alla natura prettamente funzionale di questa tipologia di vettura.
Motori diesel e benzina. In più una versione plug-in benzina, abbinata a una trasmissione automatica a 8 rapporti. Sul fronte degli Adas, il sistema Pilot Assist di assistenza alla guida rimane attivo fino a una velocità di 130 km/h.
Questo sistema rappresenta un ulteriore passo avanti verso la realizzazione della Vision di Volvo, che prevede che entro il 2020 nessuno resti ucciso o gravemente ferito in caso di incidente a bordo di una nuova Volvo.

I have to admit, when I first heard which Volvo we’d be getting as this year’s Autoblog long-term test vehicle, I was a bit disappointed. I’m admittedly a wagon guy, and the 2020 Volvo S60 is the most milquetoast thing Volvo makes. A V90 Cross Country or XC90 would’ve been more interesting, but at least our S60 is the T8.

A linha 2020 dos modelos S90 e V60 da Volvo receberam um leve facelift, que pode passar despercebido para a maioria das pessoas. A dupla de produtos topo de linha da marca sueca também adicionou um sistema híbrido leve para reduzir em 15%, o consumo de combustível.
No visual, os S90 e V90 receberam alterações no para-choque dianteiro, que passa a dispor de novos faróis de neblina, assim como grade inferior e spoiler revisados. Na V90, as lanternas em LED tiveram o layout de iluminação modificado, recebendo agora repetidores de direção sequenciais.
A Volvo acrescentou novas cores e rodas de liga leve redesenhadas. Por dentro, o sistema de som Bowers & Wilkins recebeu uma versão mais sofisticada, que inclui reprodução do estilo do clube de jazz favorito, amplificador mais potente e modo de cancelamento de ruído.
O Advanced Air Cleaner é outra novidade, sendo um sensor de detecção de partículas PM 2.5 com monitor de qualidade do ar no ambiente interno e novo processo de filtragem. Os Volvo S90 e V90 ganham duas entradas USB-C atrás, assim como carregamento indutivo de smartphone em algumas versões. Um novo revestimento derivado de lã, agora faz parte do pacote.
Na mecânica, os propulsor Drive-E continuam os mesmos, mas os S90 e V90 adotam na linha 2020, um sistema híbrido leve de 48 volts, que permite reduzir o consumo em até 15%. Sedã e perua de luxo, os dois modelos são fabricados sobre a plataforma escalável SPA, que também sustenta os S/V/XC60, além do XC90.
No Brasil, a Volvo comercializa apenas o S90 T8 Plug-In Hybrid, que vem com motor Drive-E 2.0 de 320 cavalos e um motor elétrico traseiro de 87 cavalos, totalizando 407 cavalos.
Essa variante do sedã de luxo, que tem suspensão traseira pneumática e pode ser recarregado em tomada externa, tem preço sugerido de R$ 309.950 (mesmo preço do S60 Polestar Engineered), valor que teve redução, sendo anteriormente R$ 365.950.

2020 Volvo V60 Cross Country First Drive: Swedish Fish
While an Arctic chill shut things down in Michigan, we headed to the Arctic Circle for comparative warmth. And while Americans continue to unabatedly love SUVs and crossovers, we were in northern Sweden because, to our great joy, Volvo continues to make wagons. Delicious dichotomies.
We flew to Lulea, Sweden, to get behind the wheel of the 2020 Volvo V60 Cross County, a hiked-up wagon for those who want their daily driver to double as a toy in the wild with all-wheel drive, hill descent control, extra ground clearance, and lots of room for gear and other playthings.
Volvo is on an upswing with a string of beautifully styled vehicles on new architectures that leave the old partnership with Ford far in the rearview mirror. In addition to SUVs or crossovers, the Swedish brand remains committed to cars, including even lower-volume wagons, in the U.S.
American demand for wagons is so low that Volvo dealers don’t stock them in all sizes—you have to order the larger V90 online. But the midsize V60 is in a sweet spot, and dealers will have it and its Cross Country cousin shipped from Torslanda, Sweden, and in stock.
The Cross Country, being more rugged and closer to the almighty crossover, is expected to outsell the regular V60 4:1. Dealers will start taking orders in March for delivery in July. Pricing has not been announced, but expect the rugged wagon to start in the $45,000 range.
Return of the V60 Cross Country
Volvo last offered a V60 Cross Country for the 2018 model year. There was a conventional 2019 V60 but no Cross Country.
So for the return of the V60 Cross Country for 2020, we packed our long johns and fur-rimmed hats and headed to a fairy tale land of ice and snow to test its mettle. Temperatures were in the -17 degree Fahrenheit range just south of the Arctic Circle. Ironically back home in the U.S., Detroit was registering -11, nearby Chicago was -23, and parts of Minnesota registered an eye-popping -48 courtesy of a Polar Vortex that brought frigid air down from Canada.
For northern Sweden, icy temperatures are the norm, which resulted in ice so thick on the Gulf of Bothnia this year that when we attempted to measure it, the depth exceeded the normal 32-inch measuring tool and we were left to guess how much deeper it went. The Gulf, which stretches to neighboring Finland, and other frozen bodies of water served as ice roads and handling courses for our two days of frozen fun with the newest Cross Country.
We had a fleet of T5 AWD models with the turbocharged version of the 2.0-liter engine in all Volvos. It generates 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The U.S. will only get the T5 powertrain with an eight-speed automatic transmission, but we found the power to be more than adequate.
Our T5 was outfitted with Michelin X-Ice North studded tires. Ice caught in the wheels created an imbalance that made it hard to really gauge the vehicle’s on-road manners. But they should not differ much from the V60 wagon that MotorTrend found to be more relaxed than a BMW 3 Series wagon, with little urgency and often seeking more power than the transmission is delivering. It shines in Comfort mode. The 60-series has left behind the old Ford EUCD architecture and has joined the 90-series on Volvo’s global Scalable Product Architecture.
Clear That Snowbank
Much of our evaluation was centered on how well the wagon handles snow and ice. The Cross Country has almost 8.3 inches of ground clearance compared with 5.8 inches on the regular wagon. Some of that comes from bigger wheels (we were on 235/45R19); the rest is from the raised chassis. A track extender allowed Volvo to set the wheels about 1.2 inches wider. The wheelbase remains the same as the regular V60.
The Cross Country has 8 percent softer spring rates to prioritize comfort over rough roads. It has a control-arm front suspension, but where bigger brother V90 Cross Country has rear air suspension, V60 Cross Country gets a transverse composite leaf spring at the rear axle, which kept the cruising comfortable in all conditions. The electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering was tuned to match the elevated chassis and made both control and drifting easy tasks. Although we were on 19-inch wheels, the Cross Country is also available with 18s and 20s in Europe.
All-wheel drive is standard on the Cross Country. No buttons to push; it’s an updated version of the fifth-generation BorgWarner (formerly Haldex) system. The improvements largely reduced weight and cost while making it more fuel efficient.
Reindeer Alert
We were warned of the region’s ample moose and reindeer population—a perfect way to test the vehicle’s large animal mitigation system, which warns of large, often-antlered creatures at the side of the road and automatically brakes if a collision is deemed imminent. Alas, no such sightings occurred on our drive. We had to simulate sudden lane change maneuvers with cones on a frozen sea. The only reindeer was on our plate. In Scandinavia it’s the prevalent protein source and is consumed with a lovely gravy and spoonfuls of lingonberries to juice up the lean meat.
City Safety is the umbrella term for Volvo’s standard collision avoidance systems. Pilot Assist provides steering, braking, and accelerating assistance as part of the adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist systems.
On a 1.2-mile handling track on pure ice, we did laps with traction control engaged to feel the back end try to slide out, only to be forcibly—but not abruptly—pulled back into line again and again and again. Volvo takes its reputation for safety very seriously.
Then we tuned the Swedish nanny off and got to really play. The takeaway: Wagons are an incredibly fun body style to drift. The long back end acts as the tail wanting to wag the dog. But the vehicle is also adept at transitioning from one curve to the next with a little throttle and hands working to resist overcompensating and spinning into the snowbanks lining the course.
An obstacle course built of ice and snow showcased hill descent control, which kicks in automatically when in Off-Road mode to control the wagon down a steep hill while the pedals are foot-free. It’s notable how quiet the Volvo system is. Many competitors have noisy descent control akin to tennis players grunting to telegraph the effort involved. Similarly, the hill start assist is seamless in its ability to stop, hold in place, and continue on up the hill with no action needed by the driver. Snow obstacles twisted the long body of the wagon and left no marks while giant snowbanks created a faux halfpipe and showed how well the tires can keep a heavily tilted vehicle from toppling over.
Just Cross Country
There are no Momentum or Inscription or R-Design trims to choose from—it’s just Cross Country. Our evaluation vehicles were white with a black interior and attractive metallic trim to brighten it up. Volvo has become known for its open-pore woods, but designers also developed an edgier and more modern ambience with the careful use of metals and leathers with pearl stitching. The seats are darn comfortable, too.
A personal gripe: USB ports hidden in the covered console you have to open to access. Given the inability of society to part with devices, new vehicles should offer easily accessible and exposed outlets and a spot to rest the charging phone. Volvo did design slats into the cupholder section to stand up two phones, so Brownie points for that. And infotainment is via the Sensus system with its large screen and often-slow-to-load software.
Many luxury vehicles have a single setting to heat the steering wheel, but the V60 Cross Country has three. Birthed in a cold nation, Volvo understands the value of heat. I dare you to stay on the highest setting for a lengthy drive. There are also three degrees of heated seats.
Cross Country variants date back to the original 1997–2000 Volvo V70 XC, followed by a second-generation V70 XC in 2001, and a third generation debuted in 2008. The introduction of a V90 Cross Country for the 2017 model year marked the fourth generation, made possible by the flexibility of the new architecture.
V60 T8 teaser
We also spent a little time in the V60 T8 with Volvo’s plug-in hybrid Twin Engine powertrain providing all-wheel drive. Global T8 production is not scheduled to begin until the spring of 2020, and at this point there are no plans to sell it in North America. Volvo is taking a deliberate wait-and-see attitude to gauge demand for the V60 overall. The U.S. could get the T6 plug-in hybrid instead of the T8, but again, no green lights yet.
The T8 we drove briefly had Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 studded tires and the telltale grabby brakes of a hybrid. The plug-in felt heavier and not as spirited to drive. Nor is its battery-only range groundbreaking at only 27 miles, though it beats the XC90’s 19 miles on electricity alone. Push a button for permanent all-wheel drive to be engaged with the help of the gas engine augmenting the electric motor already supplying power to the rear wheels.
At the Lulea University of Technology, a research project classifies different types of snow. It is this focus on elements that forged a car like the V60 Cross Country. We can now attest to its abilities in harsh conditions and look forward to spending more time with it on regular tires, in regular conditions, and on regular roads.

First Drive: 2019 Volvo S60
When we were first invited to sample the new Volvo S60, we figured we’d have an easy job ahead of us; we could just cut and paste from our recent Volvo reviews. After all, the S60 (along with its wagon sibling, the V60) is the final model in Volvo’s product renewal, and it uses the same Scaled Product Architecture (SPA) platform, Drive-E engines, and tablet-like Sensus interface as the XC60 and 90-series vehicles. Though we were happy to hear the new S60 will be built in the U.S. at Volvo’s newly minted South Carolina plant, we weren’t expecting any surprises.
But surprise us Volvo did with its awkwardly named 2019 Volvo S60 Polestar Engineered. This is the top-of-the-range sporting edition of the S60, with an upgraded suspension, brakes, and a version of Volvo’s T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain under the hood. While electrified performance cars aren’t new, this is one of the first examples clearly aimed at the masses. And aside from a few glitches, it’s pretty darn good.
That’s the good news. The bad news is you won’t be able to get one anytime soon. Volvo is offering just 20—yes, you read that right, two-zero—of the Polestar Engineering cars to the U.S. market for the 2019 model year. Rather than selling them, it offered them on its Care By Volvo subscription plan. As you can probably imagine, all 20 are already spoken for.
None of this makes us any less interested in the car, or any less enthralled by the driving experience. The S60 PE’s powertrain combines the supercharged-and-turbocharged version of Volvo’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which drives the front wheels, with an electric motor connected to the rear wheels. Total system power is 415 horsepower and 494 lb-ft of torque, up 15 hp and 22 lb-ft from Volvo’s base T8 setup. Other enhancements include Öhlins electronically-adjustable shocks and gold-colored Brembo brake calipers, with seat belts and tire valve stem caps colored to match.
The combination of the engine’s supercharger and the electric motor on the rear axle brings a new definition to right now power. Volvo claims a 0-60 time of 4.3 seconds, but there’s more to the story. Most modern-day turbocharged cars hesitate at least a little when you stomp the pedal from rest, but not the Polestar—it scoots with no delay. The T8 engine, which uses a supercharger to boost off-idle response, is quick enough on its own. Augmenting it with electricity seriously ups the grin factor and offers more confirmation that electrification can be a good thing from a performance perspective.
The snappy powertrain makes it easy to overlook the suspension, which is also worthy of note. Anyone who drove the previous-gen S60 Polestar will remember that it was a great-handling car with a punishing ride. The new Polestar Engineered S60 is a little tamer and a lot more livable. It’s not the grippiest car we’ve driven, but it zips through the curves with a satisfying rightness. The ride is firm, to be sure, but not putative, and it floats rather forgivingly over sharper bumps. And while we’ve already dealt with the powertrain, we must mention it again: Corner exit is a whole new kind of fun with the workload shared by an electric motor, which doesn’t get bogged down even if the transmission happens to be in the wrong gear.
What makes the S60 PE (sorry, Volvo, but we refuse to refer to such a great car by such a silly name) is that once you turn off Sport mode, it transforms itself into Mr. Green. The gas engine shuts off and the car favors electric power. The battery-only range is modest—21 miles—but that’s enough for the average one-way commute plus a quick run for lunch. The T8 charges with a standard 240-volt EV charger and drivers can charge from the engine or hold the battery charge for later use. Tired of imitating a Prius? Click back to Sport mode, the engine fires up, and the electric motor goes from helping you save fuel to helping you waste it.
Only one thing was seriously out of whack during our drive, however, and it had to do with the brakes. Like most hybrids, the S60 utilizes a mix of regenerative and friction braking, and the setup in the cars we drove seemed way off to us. Hit the brakes quickly and they grab hard, and when nearing a stop the braking effort increases with surprising rapidity. Smooth stops are nearly impossible as there’s no way of knowing when the sudden increase in braking power will come. We’re guessing there’s a problem with the transition from regen to friction braking as the car slows. Volvo says it is still refining the brakes, though it’s a little worrying that the cars have come this far along in the development process without solving the issue.
A couple of things are slightly less out-of-whack. The steering, while nicely weighted and responsive, could provide more feedback. And what’s up with the E-shifter’s behavior? The crystal handle is nice, but it requires a double-tap to move between the most commonly-used ranges (park, drive, and reverse), which is both frustrating and unnecessary—most electronic shifters allow you accomplish this in one motion. Call us pedantic if you like; we’ll see if you agree after driving a T8 and trying to figure out why the hell the car isn’t moving in its intended direction (answer: You want drive but you’ve only made it to neutral). We’d be much happier if Volvo fitted the ordinary P-R-N-D shifter it employs on its T5 and T6 models.
We should note that the crusher-bound pre-production S60s we drove had 20-inch wheels and Pirelli P Zero tires that will not make it to the U.S.; our S60 PEs will get 19-inch wheels with a yet-to-be-determined tire. Volvo thinks the 20s would be too rough for the moonscape pavement of Eastern cities, and given our experience with the previous-gen Polestar cars, its caution is probably warranted. We’ll save our final verdict for the fully baked production cars, which will mean waiting for the 2020 models. (Hopefully the brakes get sorted out by then.)
And what of the other S60 models? If you’ve spent any time in a new-generation Volvo, particularly the 90-series cars, we can do this quickly: There’s way more back seat room than the old short-wheelbase S60, the trunk is still a bit tight, and the T6 R-Design model drives—as you would expect—much like a scaled-down S90. Everything else we say will be a rehash, so if you’d like to slip away now, feel free. We highly recommend Jetrho Bovingdon’s article about scaring the daylights out of himself at the Nürburgring 24.
If you’re unfamiliar with the Volvo revolution, you’re in for a treat. No doubt you’ve picked up on the visual differences between the new S60 and the outgoing model; the two cars bear some similarity in silhouette, but the angles and creases on the new car are sharper, and we think the C-shaped taillights work better than they do on the bigger S90. This is a good-looking sedan, handsome and understated, and we think the design will age well.
But the real revolution takes place inside. Volvo has long aligned itself with Swedish minimalism, but the S60 (and its fellow new-generation Volvos) take this to a new level. Most secondary controls are accessed through a portrait-style touch-screen Volvo calls Sensus, with the number of buttons on the dash reduced to the minimum required by law. This makes the S60’s cabin a wonderfully uncluttered place, and Volvo has taken good advantage by fitting the S60 with top-notch materials and switchgear. Aside from some detail differences, particularly on the passenger’s side of the dash, the S60’s fascia is identical to other Volvos, and that’s fine with us—Volvo’s cabin design is totally unique, and we love it.
That said, familiarity with the Sensus system (something we are quickly gaining with our Four Seasons Volvo V90) can easily breed contempt. It’s easy to swipe around and find most of the functions, or to switch between a full-screen map and what’s playing on the stereo, but some bits of the interface need work—for example, you have to fill in a lot of information to perform a simple search for particular stores or other points-of-interest. Volvo hasn’t changed the interface much since the XC90 was introduced, though it says the S60’s version has a faster processor.
We drove our T6-powered Four Seasons V90 to the press preview, and our drive in the S60 T6 really did feel like déjà vu. Despite its smaller size, the S60 is not that much lighter than the 90-series cars, and acceleration from the 316-hp T6 engine felt comparable, as did steering and handling. What sets the S60 apart is its more sensible size. As much as we love the V90, it’s a land yacht, and the S60 is much easier to maneuver and park.
Volvo has set pricing at $36,795 (including destination) for the entry-level T5 Momentum, with T6 models starting at $41,295 and T8 plug-in hybrids at $55,395. T6 models are also available on Volvo’s all-inclusive subscription program, Care by Volvo, at $775 per month for the Momentum trim level and $850 per month for the R-Design. (In case you were wondering, the limited-run 2019 Volvo S60 Polestar Engineered cars were priced at $1,100 per month.) Care by Volvo includes payments, insurance, and maintenance, and subscribers can change to a different Volvo after 12 months.
The S60 hits closer to the heart of the market than the bigger S90 sedan, and we predict it’s going to be a strong seller (or at least a strong subscription). We’re bummed to have to wait for the Polestar Engineered cars, but at least that’ll give Volvo time to fix the brakes—and maybe come up with a better name.
