Ao longo das últimas décadas, a empresa desenvolveu vários produtos no Brasil: todos, claro, foram fabricados aqui. Os projetos domésticos mais antigos, aliás, eram até mais complexos. Afinal, enquanto o Nivus aproveita algumas peças de lataria do Polo, os demais compartilhavam apenas plataforma e mecânica com outros produtos do fabricante.

1. Volkswagen SP1 e SP2

A decisão de fabricar um carro esportivo é sempre ousada. Ainda mais no contexto da década de 1970, quando o mercado brasileiro era bem mais limitado. Porém, naquela época, a Volkswagen optou por correr esse risco com um projeto inteiramente nacional, que resultou no SP1 e no SP2: os nomes eram a abreviação das palavras Sport Prototype.
É verdade que a empresa produzia o Karmann Ghia, mas esse projeto veio pronto do exterior: a subsidiária brasileira apenas o adaptou. Até mesmo o Karmann Ghia TC, que era exclusivo para o mercado local, teve as linhas originalmente criadas pelo italiano Giorgetto Giugiaro. Portanto, a tarefa de elaborar um esportivo a partir do zero constituiu um desafio inédito para o designer Márcio Piancastelli.
O profissional fez um excelente trabalho: desde o lançamento, em 1972, o design é considerado um dos mais belos da indústria nacional. O SP1 e o SP2 eram praticamente idênticos, diferenciando-se pelo acabamento e, principalmente, pela cilindrada do motor. O primeiro era movido por um 1.6 de 54 cv de potência líquida, enquanto o segundo, um pouco mais forte, tinha uma unidade 1.7 de 67 cv.
Os dois propulsores mantinham a arquitetura típica dos carros da Volkswagen na época, com cilindros contrapostos e arrefecimento a ar. O desempenho modesto, associado ao preço elevado, acabou sendo o calcanhar de aquiles do modelo: a produção chegou a apenas 10 mil unidades, aproximadamente, até ser descontinuada em 1976. Os exemplares sobreviventes são, hoje, disputados a peso de ouro por colecionadores.
2. Volkswagen Brasilia

Na década de 1970, o Fusca vivia um paradoxo: era o automóvel mais vendido do país, mas o projeto já dava sinais de obsolescência. A Volkswagen decidiu, então, criar um produto mais moderno, mas que mantivesse a popular base mecânica do modelo. Assim nascia a Brasilia, que chegou ao mercado em junho de 1973.
Em comparação ao Fusca, a Brasilia era 17 cm mais curta, porém oferecia maior espaço interno e melhor visibilidade. Além disso, a porta traseira para acessar o porta-malas tornava esse compartimento muito mais prático. Apenas o nível de ruído interno ficou mais alto, devido ao posicionamento do motor praticamente dentro do habitáculo.
Um dos primeiros carros da Volkswagen totalmente desenvolvidos no Brasil, a Brasilia tinha estilo retilíneo, típico da época, mas agradável. Os traços eram obra do designer Márcio Piancastelli, responsável por vários outros projetos locais da marca alemã. O projeto é considerado até hoje um dos maiores sucessos comerciais da empresa.
Durante praticamente toda a década de 70, o modelo permaneceu como vice-líder de vendas no mercado nacional, superado apenas pelo “irmão” Fusca. A partir da segunda metade da década de 1970, o projeto da Variant começava a demonstrar rugas diante da concorrência. Consta que, para substituí-la, a Volkswagen cogitou nacionalizar a versão perua do Passat, que existiu na Europa. Porém, em vez disso, acabou optando por desenvolver uma nova geração por aqui mesmo.
Ao contrário da primeira Variant, cujo projeto, que incluía também as versões sedã (que ganhou o apelido de Zé do Caixão) e TL (fastback), era estrangeiro (identificado como Typ 3) e passou apenas por uma reformulação no Brasil, a segunda linhagem da perua foi totalmente concebida localmente. O desafio foi, novamente, capitaneado por Márcio Piancastelli.
Em termos estilísticos, a Variant II traz linhas parecidas com as da Brasilia. Porém, além de maior tanto no comprimento quanto na distância entre-eixos, a perua trouxe evoluções mecânicas consistentes. A maior delas estava nas suspensões, independente do tipo McPherson da dianteira e por braço semi-arrastado na traseira. Além disso, o acabamento interno era caprichado.
Apesar das evoluções, a Variant II não repetiu o sucesso da antecessora. A produção, iniciada em 1977, chegou ao fim já em 1980. Estimativas apontam que, ao longo desse período, somente cerca 36 mil unidades da perua teriam sido comercializadas no país. Trata-se, portanto, de um dos carros nacionais mais raros da Volkswagen.
4. Volkswagen Gol, Saveiro, Voyage e Parati
O produto de maior sucesso da Volkswagen no Brasil tem concepção totalmente nacional. Aliás, sempre teve: não só a primeira geração do Gol, lançada em 1980, como todas as seguintes, foram desenvolvidas no Brasil. O mesmo vale para os veículos derivados, que incluem a picape Saveiro e o sedã Voyage, além da perua Parati, extinta em 2012.
O projeto do primeiro Gol também foi concebido por Márcio Piancastelli. Já a segunda safra, lançada em 1994, é obra do designer Luiz Alberto Veiga. Embora a Volkswagen designe as atualizações surgidas em 1999 e em 2005 como novas gerações, elas são, na verdade, apenas reestilizações. A terceira linhagem, de fato, chegou ao mercado em 2008: também elaborada por Veiga, já foi atualizada duas vezes desde então.
As três gerações somam mais de 8,5 milhões de unidades produzidas no país ao longo de 40 anos. Entre 1987 e 2013, o Gol foi o automóvel mais comercializado do mercado brasileiro. Em 2014, o título de líder de vendas ficou com o Fiat Palio e, desde 2015, está com o Chevrolet Onix. Ainda assim, o hatch da Volkswagen segue entre os mais emplacados do país.
Ao longo das extensas trajetórias, Gol, Saveiro, Voyage e Parati tiveram diversas opções de motorização. No início, o hatch era movido por propulsores 1.3 e 1.6 Boxer a ar, logo substituídos pela família MD, que deram origem às consagradas unidades AP. Houve também o polêmico EA-111 1.0 16V. A última novidade é um câmbio automático, que chegou em 2018, acompanhado do motor EA-211 1.6 16V.
Versões esportivas também marcaram a trajetória da gama, especialmente nas décadas de 1980 e 1990. A sigla GTI, a mais famosa entre os carros de alto desempenho da Volkswagen, foi aplicada ao Gol e, durante um breve período, também à Parati.
5. Volkswagen Logus e Pointer
Logus e Pointer são fruto de um dos períodos mais curiosos da Volkswagen no Brasil. Ambos foram desenvolvidos quando a empresa estava associada à Ford: as duas originaram a gigante Auto Latina. Por isso, eles utilizavam a plataforma do Escort, que incluía, entre outras características, motor transversal.
Tais modelos deveriam disputar uma faixa de mercado intermediária entre as linhas Gol e Santana. A empresa já havia tentado ocupar essa lacuna com o Apollo, outra cria da Auto Latina, que, contudo, não passava de um clone do Verona. Era, portanto, um projeto Ford com alterações pontuais feitas pela Volkswagen.
Por outro lado, o Logus e o Pointer eram inteiramente concebidos pela marca alemã, mas com base na arquitetura da parceira estadunidense. O projeto previa duas variações: sedã de suas portas (que, no caso, era o Logus) e hatch de quatro portas (Pointer).
O design, elaborado por Luiz Alberto Veiga, trazia a identidade típica dos carros da Volkswagen, mas com toques de modernidade para a época. O visual do Pointer, em especial, chegou a ser elogiado pela matriz em Wolfsburg. O fim da Auto Latina, em 1996, acabou causando a extinção dos dois veículos: no início do ano seguinte, ambos saíram de linha.
Lançado em 1994, o Pointer teve apenas cerca 33 mil unidades produzidas. Apesar de ter tido vida curta, o sedã chegou a ser comercializado na versão esportiva GTI. Já o Logus, que chegou ao mercado um pouco antes, em 1993, teve desempenho comercial melhor e somou aproximadamente 125 mil exemplares fabricados. No caso do sedã, a configuração mais rara é a série especial Wolfsburg Edition.
6. Volkswagen Fox, CrossFox e SpaceFox
Outro produto que a Volkswagen desenvolveu no (e para o) Brasil é o Fox. Lançado em 2003, o modelo segue em produção até hoje: o projeto ainda é o original, apenas atualizado com duas reestilizações, em 2009 e em 2015, respectivamente. A produção no país já superou a marca de 2 milhões de unidades, sendo que algumas delas foram exportadas para a Alemanha.
Seguindo as tendências em voga nos carros da virada do século, a Volkswagen idealizou um hatch com capota elevada, para otimizar o espaço interno. A plataforma e a mecânica eram as mesmas do Polo da época, porém vez aplicadas em um modelo de proposta mais popular. O design coube novamente à equipe de Luiz Alberto Veiga.
A linha já foi composta pelo aventureiro CrossFox, extinto em 2017, e pela perua SpaceFox, descontinuada em 2019. Desse modo, agora unicamente o hatch é comercializado, e em apenas duas versões: Connect e Xtreme, ambas equipadas com motor 1.6 da família EA-111.
Inicialmente, a ideia do fabricante era oferecer uma alternativa e, talvez, até um sucessor para o Gol. Decorridas quase duas décadas, o jogo virou: o Fox é que será substituído pela próxima geração do “irmão”. O fim da linha estava previsto para 2021, mas o modelo ganhou uma sobrevida. É que o novo projeto atrasou devido à pandemia, de modo que a gama atual deve permanecer mais algum tempo no mercado.

Lançamento de maior expressão da Volkswagen em 2020, o Nivus foi projetado e majoritariamente concebido no Brasil: o fabricante, inclusive, faz questão de destacar as raízes locais do mais novo de seus carros. Contudo, desenvolver projetos no país está longe de ser novidade para a marca de origem alemã.

Ao longo das últimas décadas, a empresa desenvolveu vários produtos no Brasil: todos, claro, foram fabricados aqui. Os projetos domésticos mais antigos, aliás, eram até mais complexos. Afinal, enquanto o Nivus aproveita algumas peças de lataria do Polo, os demais compartilhavam apenas plataforma e mecânica com outros produtos do fabricante.

São tantos os projetos nacionais que eles renderam até um listão: enumeramos 6 carros que a Volkswagen criou no Brasil. Alguns foram grandes sucessos comerciais, outros nem tanto… Porém, todos eles marcaram época. Relembre!
1. Volkswagen SP1 e SP2

A decisão de fabricar um carro esportivo é sempre ousada. Ainda mais no contexto da década de 1970, quando o mercado brasileiro era bem mais limitado. Porém, naquela época, a Volkswagen optou por correr esse risco com um projeto inteiramente nacional, que resultou no SP1 e no SP2: os nomes eram a abreviação das palavras Sport Prototype.
É verdade que a empresa produzia o Karmann Ghia, mas esse projeto veio pronto do exterior: a subsidiária brasileira apenas o adaptou. Até mesmo o Karmann Ghia TC, que era exclusivo para o mercado local, teve as linhas originalmente criadas pelo italiano Giorgetto Giugiaro. Portanto, a tarefa de elaborar um esportivo a partir do zero constituiu um desafio inédito para o designer Márcio Piancastelli.
O profissional fez um excelente trabalho: desde o lançamento, em 1972, o design é considerado um dos mais belos da indústria nacional. O SP1 e o SP2 eram praticamente idênticos, diferenciando-se pelo acabamento e, principalmente, pela cilindrada do motor. O primeiro era movido por um 1.6 de 54 cv de potência líquida, enquanto o segundo, um pouco mais forte, tinha uma unidade 1.7 de 67 cv.
Os dois propulsores mantinham a arquitetura típica dos carros da Volkswagen na época, com cilindros contrapostos e arrefecimento a ar. O desempenho modesto, associado ao preço elevado, acabou sendo o calcanhar de aquiles do modelo: a produção chegou a apenas 10 mil unidades, aproximadamente, até ser descontinuada em 1976. Os exemplares sobreviventes são, hoje, disputados a peso de ouro por colecionadores.
2. Volkswagen Brasilia

Na década de 1970, o Fusca vivia um paradoxo: era o automóvel mais vendido do país, mas o projeto já dava sinais de obsolescência. A Volkswagen decidiu, então, criar um produto mais moderno, mas que mantivesse a popular base mecânica do modelo. Assim nascia a Brasilia, que chegou ao mercado em junho de 1973.
Em comparação ao Fusca, a Brasilia era 17 cm mais curta, porém oferecia maior espaço interno e melhor visibilidade. Além disso, a porta traseira para acessar o porta-malas tornava esse compartimento muito mais prático. Apenas o nível de ruído interno ficou mais alto, devido ao posicionamento do motor praticamente dentro do habitáculo.
Um dos primeiros carros da Volkswagen totalmente desenvolvidos no Brasil, a Brasilia tinha estilo retilíneo, típico da época, mas agradável. Os traços eram obra do designer Márcio Piancastelli, responsável por vários outros projetos locais da marca alemã. O projeto é considerado até hoje um dos maiores sucessos comerciais da empresa.
Durante praticamente toda a década de 70, o modelo permaneceu como vice-líder de vendas no mercado nacional, superado apenas pelo “irmão” Fusca. A produção foi encerrada em 1982, após ter alcançado mais de 1 milhão de unidades. Desse total, parte foi exportada para diferentes países, entre os quais Nigéria, Filipinas e Portugal. Além do mais, a Brasilia foi fabricada também no México.
3. Volkswagen Variant II
A partir da segunda metade da década de 1970, o projeto da Variant começava a demonstrar rugas diante da concorrência. Consta que, para substituí-la, a Volkswagen cogitou nacionalizar a versão perua do Passat, que existiu na Europa. Porém, em vez disso, acabou optando por desenvolver uma nova geração por aqui mesmo.
Ao contrário da primeira Variant, cujo projeto, que incluía também as versões sedã (que ganhou o apelido de Zé do Caixão) e TL (fastback), era estrangeiro (identificado como Typ 3) e passou apenas por uma reformulação no Brasil, a segunda linhagem da perua foi totalmente concebida localmente. O desafio foi, novamente, capitaneado por Márcio Piancastelli.
Em termos estilísticos, a Variant II traz linhas parecidas com as da Brasilia. Porém, além de maior tanto no comprimento quanto na distância entre-eixos, a perua trouxe evoluções mecânicas consistentes. A maior delas estava nas suspensões, independente do tipo McPherson da dianteira e por braço semi-arrastado na traseira. Além disso, o acabamento interno era caprichado.
Apesar das evoluções, a Variant II não repetiu o sucesso da antecessora. A produção, iniciada em 1977, chegou ao fim já em 1980. Estimativas apontam que, ao longo desse período, somente cerca 36 mil unidades da perua teriam sido comercializadas no país. Trata-se, portanto, de um dos carros nacionais mais raros da Volkswagen.
4. Volkswagen Gol, Saveiro, Voyage e Parati
O produto de maior sucesso da Volkswagen no Brasil tem concepção totalmente nacional. Aliás, sempre teve: não só a primeira geração do Gol, lançada em 1980, como todas as seguintes, foram desenvolvidas no Brasil. O mesmo vale para os veículos derivados, que incluem a picape Saveiro e o sedã Voyage, além da perua Parati, extinta em 2012.
O projeto do primeiro Gol também foi concebido por Márcio Piancastelli. Já a segunda safra, lançada em 1994, é obra do designer Luiz Alberto Veiga. Embora a Volkswagen designe as atualizações surgidas em 1999 e em 2005 como novas gerações, elas são, na verdade, apenas reestilizações. A terceira linhagem, de fato, chegou ao mercado em 2008: também elaborada por Veiga, já foi atualizada duas vezes desde então.
As três gerações somam mais de 8,5 milhões de unidades produzidas no país ao longo de 40 anos. Entre 1987 e 2013, o Gol foi o automóvel mais comercializado do mercado brasileiro. Em 2014, o título de líder de vendas ficou com o Fiat Palio e, desde 2015, está com o Chevrolet Onix. Ainda assim, o hatch da Volkswagen segue entre os mais emplacados do país.
Ao longo das extensas trajetórias, Gol, Saveiro, Voyage e Parati tiveram diversas opções de motorização. No início, o hatch era movido por propulsores 1.3 e 1.6 Boxer a ar, logo substituídos pela família MD, que deram origem às consagradas unidades AP. Houve também o polêmico EA-111 1.0 16V. A última novidade é um câmbio automático, que chegou em 2018, acompanhado do motor EA-211 1.6 16V.
Versões esportivas também marcaram a trajetória da gama, especialmente nas décadas de 1980 e 1990. A sigla GTI, a mais famosa entre os carros de alto desempenho da Volkswagen, foi aplicada ao Gol e, durante um breve período, também à Parati.
5. Volkswagen Logus e Pointer
Logus e Pointer são fruto de um dos períodos mais curiosos da Volkswagen no Brasil. Ambos foram desenvolvidos quando a empresa estava associada à Ford: as duas originaram a gigante Auto Latina. Por isso, eles utilizavam a plataforma do Escort, que incluía, entre outras características, motor transversal.
Tais modelos deveriam disputar uma faixa de mercado intermediária entre as linhas Gol e Santana. A empresa já havia tentado ocupar essa lacuna com o Apollo, outra cria da Auto Latina, que, contudo, não passava de um clone do Verona. Era, portanto, um projeto Ford com alterações pontuais feitas pela Volkswagen.
Por outro lado, o Logus e o Pointer eram inteiramente concebidos pela marca alemã, mas com base na arquitetura da parceira estadunidense. O projeto previa duas variações: sedã de suas portas (que, no caso, era o Logus) e hatch de quatro portas (Pointer).
O design, elaborado por Luiz Alberto Veiga, trazia a identidade típica dos carros da Volkswagen, mas com toques de modernidade para a época. O visual do Pointer, em especial, chegou a ser elogiado pela matriz em Wolfsburg. O fim da Auto Latina, em 1996, acabou causando a extinção dos dois veículos: no início do ano seguinte, ambos saíram de linha.
Lançado em 1994, o Pointer teve apenas cerca 33 mil unidades produzidas. Apesar de ter tido vida curta, o sedã chegou a ser comercializado na versão esportiva GTI. Já o Logus, que chegou ao mercado um pouco antes, em 1993, teve desempenho comercial melhor e somou aproximadamente 125 mil exemplares fabricados. No caso do sedã, a configuração mais rara é a série especial Wolfsburg Edition.
6. Volkswagen Fox, CrossFox e SpaceFox
Outro produto que a Volkswagen desenvolveu no (e para o) Brasil é o Fox. Lançado em 2003, o modelo segue em produção até hoje: o projeto ainda é o original, apenas atualizado com duas reestilizações, em 2009 e em 2015, respectivamente. A produção no país já superou a marca de 2 milhões de unidades, sendo que algumas delas foram exportadas para a Alemanha.
Seguindo as tendências em voga nos carros da virada do século, a Volkswagen idealizou um hatch com capota elevada, para otimizar o espaço interno. A plataforma e a mecânica eram as mesmas do Polo da época, porém vez aplicadas em um modelo de proposta mais popular. O design coube novamente à equipe de Luiz Alberto Veiga.

There’s a torque-sensing limited-slip diff and bigger brakes. The suspension uses struts up front and a multilink independent rear setup in place of the regular Jetta’s torsion beam, all tuned for a sportier drive and sitting 0.6 inches lower than the standard Jetta. If all this sounds familiar, it should: It’s pretty much a carbon-copy of the GTI’s spec sheet.
As expected, there are plenty of visual cues to differentiate the GLI from lesser Jettas. The blacked-out grille gets red trim, there’s a spoiler on the trunklid, and the brake calipers are painted in red, as on the GTI. The 18-inch wheel design is unique to the hottest Jetta. Red stitching and accents bring some color to the all-black interior. The options list will include many of the greatest hits from the Jetta 1.4T, including a panoramic sunroof, 10-color ambient lighting, a BeatsAudio sound system, and a digital instrument panel in place of traditional dials.
If there’s anything even approaching a surprise, it’s the addition of a 35th Anniversary model, which will be distinguished by its blacked-out roof, mirror caps, spoiler, and wheels, the latter with a red stripe, along with a few unique interior details. The 35th Anniversary car will also get the DCC adaptive dampers as standard, which brings us to one unpleasant surprise: DCC will only be offered on the 35th Anniversary edition. (Our prediction: Once the pricier Anniversary cars are gone, DCC will become available in other GLIs. Check back in a year and see if we got that one right.)
Obviously, the big discussion among VW heads will be GLI vs GTI, sedan versus hatchback. With the GLI’s larger size, you might expect weight to be the defining factor.
