Test drove several sport coupes in the 30k range this past weekend. Here are my impressions. via /r/cars
Test drove several sport coupes in the 30k range this past weekend. Here are my impressions.
I am in the market for a new car.  Looking for a sport coupe either new or slightly used in the 30k ballpark. I have always been a manual transmission guy, but I did the Porsche Driving Experience in Atlanta last fall and I was extremely impressed with the PDK gearbox.  So I have been focused on cars with dual clutch (very few options I can afford) or very good shiftable automatic transmissions like the ZF8 and A10.
2019 Camaro SS: This car looks really big, with huge wheels/tires/brakes. Yet somehow the interior feels very small and cramped. It doesn’t feel like a boat when driving it, but it doesn’t exactly feel nimble either.  It feels like you have a lot of grip primarily due to the giant tires, not the suspension if that makes sense. And people are not kidding when they say this thing has visibility problems!
I am not really a fan of the retro-style interior.  The 1SS looks decent in pictures, but looks low quality/cheap in person.  The 2SS interior with leather is nicer, but still not great. The materials on the wheel and shifter were decent, but most of the interior still feels dated and cheap. I think I would really want the 2SS if I went with the Camaro, but the 2SS is closer to 40k and out of my budget.
This car is fast, though! Definitely faster than the others I test drove. The engine sounds great, almost good enough to make you forgive the cars shortcomings.  The A10 felt really good, too. Shifts were instantaneous up and down in manual mode, the tach just pinned from one RPM to another.  I did notice a very clunky downshift when coming to a stop in manual mode, though.
2015 Mercedes C350 (W204): I think this is a beautiful car, very understated but still sporty. My girlfriend (who is not a car person at all) thinks it looks like a car for old people. She kept calling it the “granny car”.  Driving the Mercedes was different from the others.  It absorbed all of the bumps in the road and felt kind of like driving a couch, yet somehow still felt planted and handled really well for the ride comfort.  I felt very insulated from the outside world in this car.
The interior in this car is pretty good. The materials on the dash/wheel/console felt really high quality. The seats looked and felt really good, also. The only problem is the center console and navigation screen look really dated for a 2015.  The buttons and radio don’t look like something you would find on a new, modern, luxury car. The nav screen looked tiny and was very low resolution. If I plan to keep the car 5 years, the nav screen display is going to look absolutely ancient.
The C350’s speed was just decent, not slow but it doesn’t feel fast, either. It lacked the “oomph” of the Camaro or 435i. Honestly, I could live with the speed, I just was not impressed with the Mercedes 7G-Tronic transmission at all, though.  I have seen some reviews online where people said it was pretty good for a “regular” style automatic, but it was miles behind everything else I drove.  There was a noticeable delay between when I pulled the paddle and the shift actually executed.  It also seemed to downshift pretty clunkily on every downshift while cruising slowly.  The car only had less than 30k miles on it, but I almost wonder if there was something wrong with the transmission?
2015 BMW 435i M-Sport:  The car looks great in person. It looks the most modern of anything else I drove.  Very futuristic and angular.  Really loved the look of the headlights and taillights, too. I know the roofline is roughly the same height as the others, but my perception is that it seemed lower.
The interior of the 435i was miles ahead of the other options.  It looks super modern and I have no worries that it will look dated in a couple years. I personally like how the navigation screen extends out of the top of the dash (even though many seem to hate it).  The materials in the interior all felt top notch.
The car’s handling felt very balanced, nimble, and in-tune with the road. It kind of reminds me of how the Porsche’s felt when I did the Porsche Driving Experience. It was also very fast, it felt like it had more power in the low RPM range than even the Camaro.  It must make full boost really quickly, because I didn’t feel any perceptible turbo lag. But, I was most impressed with the ZF8 transmission! It shifts so perfectly like the A10, maybe even better.  And I did not notice any clunkiness on downshifts at all. It had perfect shifts in manual mode but still felt super smooth like a regular auto. I think the ZF8 is the best gearbox out of anything I tested.
2017/2019 Toyota 86: This is the cheapest option I have considered.  So that definitely helps it to try and overcome some of its downfalls.  I have also kind of wanted one of these since they came out, so it was near the top of my list now that I am in a position to get a new car. I think they look great in person, especially the new headlights on the 2017+ models. I drove both a 2017 automatic base model and a 2019 manual with the GT trim level.
The interior of the base model was passable.  It was not amazing, but I could definitely live with it.  It’s a big improvement over the FR-S, which had a horrid interior in my opinion.  The only thing is that the GT interior was just way nicer. If I got this car I would want the GT interior no question.  The layout of the interior kind of reminds me of a poor man’s Porsche. It is definitely Porsche inspired.  The only thing I didn’t really like is how they just forced a rectangular LCD screen into the round pods of the gauge cluster.  It just doesn’t look right.
The steering feel in this car was awesome, maybe even the best of anything else I tested.  I really liked how it felt smaller and more nimble than the others.  The automatic shifted pretty good in manual mode, definitely better than the Mercedes. This is the only car out of the bunch that I would get in manual, though. The clutch felt excellent, nice and light. The shifter was also amazing, so much shorter and tighter than the stick in my Civic.  This car is actually a ton of fun to drive.
There is just one problem: after driving the other cars, this car is just so slow!  I know it’s basically a meme how this car is slow, but the power is really just underwhelming.  On the test drive in the auto, I told my girlfriend I was going to gun it from a complete stop to see how fast it was.  She literally started laughing because it was so slow (yet somehow far louder than anything else with the TRD exhaust it had).  It kind of hurt my soul a bit because I really wanted to like this car after lusting after it for so long.  The manual did feel a noticeably faster than the auto, but it was still pretty underwhelming.
The other downside of this car is that I would want to mod it.  Header, tune, coilovers, wheels, and supporting mods.  After you add all of that up, you could just buy a better car to start with (which is also probably a wiser financial decision).
Additional Options: I still plan to drive a 2015-2016 Audi A5 and S5 (with the DSG) and I know I need to check out a new Mustang GT.  For some reason I thought only the GT350 had the A10, but I just found out you can get it on the GT.  Not sure If I will bother trying to drive a V8 Challenger. I know it has the ZF8, but I have been in them before and the interior is sub-par quality and feels like it was made for giants. I suspect it would feel like the Camaro, but all the downsides would be magnified. Is there anything else out on the market I am missing?
Conclusion: I am really glad I went and test drove a bunch of different models.  It really gave me a feel of all their differences.  I have not really ever been a big BMW guy, but after driving the competition, I get it. The BMW is my first choice right now, which is not what I expected.  It has the driving dynamics, the speed, and the super nice modern interior.  I was really impressed. I may even stretch my budget a bit and try and get a 2017 440i M-Sport.  I’m curious what everyone else thinks about my impressions.

2019 Toyota GT 86 Release Date
The 86 can be a -entrance back again ever again-to-basics physical activities vehicle that Toyota showcased primarily 5 yrs earlier. The auto is regarded as the 100 % natural methods of an athletics behaviors automatic since it features a most exceptional very well-nicely balanced back wheel tour chassis having an evidently aspirated engine. Sadly, it isn’t specifically alluring. Your vehicle is lacking in some kind of electric energy, therefore it shows up now less adequately because it needs to. We have a variety of appropriate reports even if. It would appear that a totally new type will affect the current market while using future 2019 Toyota GT 86.
Right now, you will find greatly few attainable info. Nevertheless, simply because Toyota just accomplished the progression on your Supra, they, into the surface, have sufficient chance to popularity for the 86. the brand new design will probably conserve the rear wheel strain platform, having said that, which is regarding this. The car will appear as lighter weight, better nevertheless to strain.
2019 TOYOTA 86 EXTERIOR
The 2019 Toyota GT 86 will further than almost definitely use studying the sibling, the Supra. We are going to depend upon it to support the moved once again tourist cabin and also the fantastically increased hood. But, the fresh GT 86 should be alot more outstanding along with a little below sooner than. The front side position of your personal automotive will in all probability comprise of some influences from Toyota’s other engines the easiest way to provide the business appearance.
But, via the again, we are going to rely upon it to find linked tail lighting effects or perhaps a very similar exhaust establish-as much as that precise into the Supra. On account of all those, the car will be lots significantly more hostile than ever. Besides that, there is got to appearance far less sophisticated than in the past way more than a more time wheelbase.
2019 TOYOTA 86 INTERIOR
Primarily because the 2019 Toyota GT 86 will continue being a as well most important rules auto; its cabin will never be everything that extraordinary. Some pointed out Toyota would maintain the style of this recent day time version but provider considerably more worrying listing of features. Even while we reluctance this could manifest, it’d appear helpful thinking about how power-pressed the current period cabin is.
The most important market in this posting may very well function as the available with the region while in the lumbar region conclude as well as the components that happen to be presented inside. Each of them really need to enrich with the assistance of an excellent border, therefore the clean new 86 turns into a vehicle some continuous lengthy mileage much less elaborate to be with.
2019 TOYOTA 86 ENGINE
Existing 2.basically no liter naturally aspirated effortless-4 engine should are residing. But, chances are it does not. Gossips marketer the more time term 2019 Toyota GT 86 may possibly dispose of its ordinarily aspirated engine entirely. Most people require this is simply not reality because this individual engine comes with a one of a kind unique. However, Toyota could possibly go on upfront and avoid it therefore you are able to change it which includes a smaller and extremely helpful turbocharged inline-4 engine.
Your vehicle needs to have every different a BMW set up engine or making use of a Toyota-manufactured 1. Inspite of what experience, both really should be a great deal more than capable of presenting near to 250 horse power and over two 100 lb-toes of torque. As earlier than, a 6-acceleration manual gearbox will continue to be popular and that also time over the auto needs to consist of a small tumble differential. An even more exceptionally reliable design displaying to the extent that about three 100 if not more hp is also a legitimate prospect while Toyota did not say a word thus far.
2019 TOYOTA 86 RELEASE DATE AND PRICE
In case the gossips regarding the platform are likely to be changing into actual, then your most innovative GT 86 should support the exactly the same wheelbase and course density as sooner than. Even so, some also mentioned that Toyota’s TNGA build is additional than confident enough to handle a backside wheel strain design. If is the case, then just about everything we fully grasp is perfect will modify. This new software may very well allow the 86 to become greatly much lighter than earlier than and also it needs to help it to handle numerous its troubles.
On this occasion all around about around a 50:50 bodyweight flow of blood is feasible, and on the pinnacle within the engine should be now migrated also rear. This could certainly yield among the initial-class driving a motor vehicle a car automobiles these days. Regarded the most significant not accepted elements about it must be its payment. Anything the advantage that the car perhaps will galvanize, its price will most likely be correct that would be successful. We will be able to want $25,000. Nonetheless, probabilities are it will certainly expense about $35,000. This transmit could make it possible for Toyota release even now some other coupe inside lessen array with all of the Supra getting the range-topping option.

2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition Priced from $89,040
Toyota is adding two special edition models for the 2020 model year, the Land Cruiser Heritage Edition and 86 Hakone Edition. Both vehicles will feature special touches and they won’t come cheap, especially for the hulking Land Cruiser.
The 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition will be the rarer of the two special edition models because production will have a limit. Additionally, the Heritage Edition will only come as a two-row model and in either Midnight Black Metallic or Blizzard Pearl exterior colors. Pricing starts at $89,040, $2,330 more than a standard 2020 Land Cruiser. That gets you extras like bronze 18-inch BBS wheels, retro-styled Land Cruiser badges, dark headlight clusters and foglight surrounds, dark chrome side mirrors, bronze contrast stitching in the interior, and all-weather floor mats. Under the hood is the same 381-hp 5.7-liter V-8 mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Toyota’s go-anywhere goods like the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension system, CRAWL control, Multi-Terrain Select, and Off-Road Turn Assist all come standard on the 2020 Land Cruiser Heritage Edition.
The 2020 Toyota 86 Hakone Edition checks in at $30,825 with the six-speed manual or $31,545 with the six-speed automatic. This gets you bronze 17-inch alloy wheels, a two-tone tan and black interior, tan contrast stitching, a black rear spoiler, and a tan Toyota 86 logo embroidered into the passenger’s side of the dash. All 86 Hakone Edition owners also get a tan-colored key fob cover with the 86 logo in black. Based on the GT trim, the 86 Hakone Edition also comes standard with full LED headlights, chrome dual exhaust tips, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and start, LED fog lights, and an instrument cluster display. In terms of performance, there are no changes; the 2020 Toyota 86 Hakone Edition keeps the same 2.0-liter flat-four with 205 hp and 156 lb-ft of torque (200 hp and 151 lb-ft with the automatic).
First out of the gate will be the 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition, hitting dealerships in late summer 2019. Consumers wanting a 2020 86 Hakone Edition will need to wait because it goes on sale in the fall.

This Awesome Green Version of the Toyota 86 Is Coming to the U.S.
Tumblr media
There is a new special-edition version of the Toyota 86 sports car for 2020 called the Hakone Edition. It's finished in an attractive shade of British racing green that Toyota calls Hakone Green, which contrasts nicely with the bronze 17-inch wheels and the tan and black interior. The Hakone Edition 86 will go on sale in fall 2019 as a 2020 model.Just a few months ago, we gushed over a Japan-only special-edition Toyota 86 finished in a beautiful shade of British racing green-and now we're thrilled to report that there's a similar version of the rear-drive sports car destined for the U.S. It's a limited-production model called the 2020 Toyota 86 Hakone Edition, and it features a color scheme nearly identical to that of the Japan-market British Green Limited model. Aside from the rich green exterior paint, it gets a black rear spoiler and bronze 17-inch wheels that make for a delectable-looking combo, if you ask us. Toyota says that both the car itself and the color-Hakone Green-are named after the famously twisty Hakone Turnpike near Tokyo. Inside, the highlights include seats wrapped in tan leather and black faux suede, tan and black stitching throughout the cabin, and an embroidered "Toyota 86" logo on the dash and the embossed floor mats. Toyota even throws in a pair of tan leather key pouches and a folio cover.
Tumblr media
There's nothing to differentiate the Hakone Edition mechanically. It comes with the same 2.0-liter boxer four as the standard car, paired with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Because this edition amounts to little more than an appearance package, we assume it won't cost too much more than the 86's base GT trim level, which starts at $29,565.Toyota says the Hakone Edition will be limited but won't say how many units are coming to the U.S. at this point. Production starts this fall.

Toyota 86 trd 2019 Special Edition First Drive Review - Cars Medd

Toyota 86 trd 2019 Special Edition First Drive Review - Cars Medd
For several years, there was no sports car in the Toyota range. The Corolla GT-S, Celica, MR2 and Supra were all gone, and for a while, the manufacturer's most sporty vehicle was a RAV4 V6. In 2012, the Scion FR-S appeared, and suddenly, not only was Toyota back in the sporting auto arena, but with the help of Subaru, we produced a fun little coupe. The FR-S and its cousin the Subaru BRZ , with a light weight and a propulsion wheel, surprised us by their driving dynamics and their sporting character, despite some lamentations from the automotive press that these cars were missing. of torque at mid-regime.
Tumblr media
Toyota 86 trd 2019 Special Edition First Drive Review - Cars Medd
The Toyota 86 trd 2019 - succeeding the Scion FR-S after the 2016 vintage in North America - continues its relatively unchanged career, but obtains another limited-edition variant in order to maintain the interest of the customers, the Toyota 86 trd 2019. Is it sufficient? Not really. The first year on the FR-S and BRZ market was their best, and their sales have fallen since that time. However, the Toyota GR Supra 2020 will soon arrive at dealerships, and now that there will be two sports cars on the sales floor, will the Toyota 86 trd 2019 get some love? Hard to say. Besides the BRZ, what are the rivals of the Toyota 86 trd 2019? The Mazda MX-5 and the Fiat 124 Spider of course, despite being roadsters while the Toyota 86 trd 2019 is a coupe. It can also be considered a competitor to the base Nissan 370Z, and an alternative to compact sports hatchbacks such as the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Hyundai Veloster.
Tumblr media
Toyota 86 trd 2019 Special Edition First Drive Review - Cars Medd
The Toyota 86 trd 2019, relies on a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine that develops 205 horsepower and 156 foot-pounds of torque - when paired with the standard six-speed manual transmission. If you prefer the six-speed automatic, we are rather with 200 horsepower and 151 foot-pounds. No problem. The takeoffs are fast, without being dizzying, while the car accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 7.4 seconds. A 370Z is much faster, and a Golf GTI is also more premium. However, the Toyota 86 trd 2019 being a pure sports car, it compensates with excellent handling, as well as the MX-5. For someone who is looking for a car that can go down the slopes during the weekend, the trd is appealing because it can be driven to the limits of its capabilities and provide an extended pleasure on a closed circuit. The electronic stability program includes a more permissive track mode but retains a safety net for times when we overestimate our driving skills. Subaru and Toyota also claimed to have designed the trunk of the car to accommodate four wheels, in order to make a quick change to the track. If you fold the back of the rear seats, of course.
Tumblr media
Toyota 86 trd 2019 Special Edition First Drive Review - Cars Medd
toyota 86 interior: Ah, those back seats! They are almost useless. It is said almost because no one will want to sit there for more than five minutes, also implying that passengers in front will have to move their seats to the maximum. Simply put, if someone sits back, everyone will suffer. But it is not impossible. toyota 86 interior: In the Toyota 86 interior, variant features a faux-suede seat trim with red inserts, red safety belts, a dashboard trimmed with faux suede, a two-tone leather-wrapped steering wheel and red stitching. In return, the rest remains basic. Heated seats are included in the Toyota GT version, but not in the more expensive Toyota 86 trd 2019. Seek why.
Tumblr media
Toyota 86 trd 2019 Special Edition First Drive Review - Cars Medd
We still get a dual-zone automatic air conditioner, an eight-speaker audio system with a seven-inch touch screen, a smart key, a digital display for the driver and LED headlights. The trd is the only one in the 18-inch wheel lineup and features trd exhaust and aerodynamics as well as SACHS shock absorbers and Brembo brakes. It is only available in raven black. toyota 86 price: Offered at $ 38,990 before shipping and preparation, this special edition of the Toyota 86 2019 is not a bargain. The trd is no more fun to drive than the base and Toyota GT versions, and on the destroyed boulevards, the car's very firm ride quickly becomes tiresome. Only 50 units of this release will be available in Canada in 2019, based on current sales. We drove the car in January during a particularly difficult week as Mother Nature sprinkled the roads with snow and freezing rain and blew out an intense cold, one after the other. The butt of the Toyota 86 trd 2019 waltzed all this time, forcing us to drive with a very delicate right foot. Toyota trd choice of Nexen winter tires provided good traction, but the electronic stability program plays a crucial role in keeping the car on all four wheels. As a four-season vehicle, there are obviously better choices. At least the consumption was reasonable since we observed an average of 8.4 L / 100 km during the week. Too bad the super gasoline is highly recommended, which raises the bill.
Tumblr media
Toyota 86 trd 2019 Special Edition First Drive Review - Cars Medd
The trd is starting at $ 29,990, but oddly enough, the Subaru BRZ is available at $ 27,995 with a comparable level of equipment, so it's easy for us to recommend one over the other. However, both are starting to get old, and despite being a different car in many respects, the Golf GTI offers both driving pleasure and versatility for only a few extra dollars a month. In the MX-5, you can lower the roof, which makes it more pleasant in summer. As competition improves over the years - with the exception of the very old 370Z - the trd and BRZ would benefit from a refresh. Frankly, why would 2013-to-2016 model owners switch cars for a new one if nothing has been changed?

I've become a BMW fan after experiencing some of their cars via the BMW Town Tour
On Tuesday, June 3rd, 2019, I went to a BMW event called "Town Tour." Someone posted about it on /r/Cars a couple months ago, and I can't remember who you are, so though I can't thank you via tagging you here, if you see this, please know I greatly appreciate you posting the link to the site.
One thing that all the participants suffered through during this event was lack of actual drive time. In Murrieta, CA, where this event was hosted, there was a major accident on the freeway, so the roads were jam-packed with commuters who had to exit the freeway. The BMW Town Tour staff limited us to basically just driving in a circle around the BMW dealership. At most, I took an M5 up to 65 mph, but goddamn did it get there quickly!
The first car I drove was this BMW M4 Competition (+ bonus M4 CS pics from the dealership's showroom floor). I immediately became a fan. It felt like this car was just urging me to continue accelerating. The interior oozed a level of luxury I had never before experienced, but I think it mostly stood out just because it was a brown/tan color instead of the all-black interiors I'm so used to in friends' Infintis and Benz cars. This car's sheer acceleration had me wondering wtf it must feel like driving an exotic. The fastest car I drove before these BMW M-cars was a tuned Nissan GT-R, but I only drove it for a mile in a straight line before bringing it back to the owner. I actually got to mildly corner with this car when coming around turns that followed the road layout the Town Tour staff set for us. Obviously, I wasn't all out cornering or anything like one would do on a track, but I could really feel the effort BMW put into the suspension. I strictly drove the car in Sport Plus mode, so I don't know what the Comfort or regular Sport modes entail. Overall, with enough funds, I thought I could see myself driving one of these in a heartbeat until I drove the next car.
The BMW M2 Competition! I think this was my favorite car. Maybe it was just my brain tricking me because I loved this car so much, but it felt like it was faster than the M4. Then again, I had gotten more comfortable driving the cars, so I suppose I was willing to go a bit deeper into the RPM range before upshifting. I swear I'd do dirty things to get this car in my garage. The power, the fact the car seemed to go in any direction I even gently turned the steering wheel toward, and just the overall appearance really cemented it as the 'Ultimate Driving Machine.' Save for the Nissan Maxima I bought my wife, every car I've ever owned has been under 3000 lbs curb weight. I see that the M2 Competition comes in a bit over 3400 lbs, but I couldn't tell. It really felt like the car was lighter.
Up next was the BMW M850i Convertible. This car seemed cool and all, but unlike the other cars in the lineup, the BMW Town Tour staff wouldn't allow anyone to drive it solo. We had to have a guide with us, and the person who went with me seemed to be selling me on the car (as if I could afford a car with a $109k MSRP 😂) by just mentioning features that went in one ear and out the other. Unfortunately, she didn't tell me we were going on an actual test drive. What happened was I signed up for the M5 first, but someone took it for a spin and went off the road layout we were supposed to follow. That jack ass got stuck in the traffic I mentioned earlier. The tour staff asked if I was interested in driving the M850i earlier than my slotted time, but they made it sound like the tour guide was coming with me just to check out the road conditions. We literally just took one low-speed spin around the streets and came back to the dealership. When I realized that was my test drive, I was very disappointed. I didn't even get to open the car up at all. And to add insult to injury, the person who drove it after me actually got to experience the car with the top down, but they had two tour guides accompany him for some reason.
Lastly, I drove this BMW M5. As you can probably tell, I got lazier with taking pictures as the morning went on. One thing I can say about this M5 that will surprise everyone here? It's insanely fast! (Shocking, right? Who woulda thunk it?) The M5's power can be felt as soon as you gently step on the gas pedal. I thought the M4 and M2 were quick, but this thing blew me away with its acceleration. I only got to take it to 65 mph, but it got there so fast that I didn't even realize I was 20 over the speed limit at first. I giggled like a schoolgirl every time I hit the gas pedal. The upshifts were ridiculously quick, too. Obviously, I can't differentiate the milliseconds of difference between one car's upshifts over the other's, but I could just sense the M5's upshifts were blindingly quick. I am a traditional manual transmission enthusiast, but I can see why people love paddle-shifters now. The quickness in the upshifts is unmatched by any manual car I've ever driven. My test drive of this car lasted fewer than 10 minutes. The guy who drove it before me ruined the event for everyone by taking the M5 out for an over 1-hour test drive with his wife. It seemed like the staff got more strict on how far we could go and how long we could drive.
Inside the dealership, they had this BMW that apparently has won a lot of races. The interior was completely stripped besides having a driver's seat.
I also saw this BMW Supra. It was the 4-cylinder with 255 hp. The dealership was asking $59k for this! I was flabbergasted. I can't imagine how much they'll charge for the 6-cylinder when they get one at the dealership.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I always thought BMWs seemed cool af, but I never drove any before this event. Now that I've officially driven a few of their cars, I have to admit I'm a fan.
Would I ever buy one? Probably never a new one. And if I did buy a used one, I'd probably go through CarMax just for their extended warranty. It feels like these cars have too much technology. With the click of a button, you can change the suspension dynamics. That seems like it's a recipe for financial disaster once the suspension needs any kind of maintenance.
I drive this beautiful Toyota 86 as my daily. Her name is Tiana. She's my "forever car," meaning I intend to keep her for the rest of my life. I initially thought I was going to feel disappointed jumping from these 400+ hp BMWs back into my 205 hp 86, but I honestly felt at home. The BMWs were nice; however, I can't help but think they just have too much power for the road. Anybody who can afford the payments on one, and even idiots who lack the funds yet are financially incompetent enough to finance one anyway, can drive these beasts down the same roads as people putting along in Corollas and Cruzes. That's scary.
Just imagine as these cars insanely depreciate and are priced under $20k in 10-15 years. High schoolers driving around in 400+ hp performance cars? Yikes!

2019 Detroit Auto Show: Hits, Misses, and Revelations
DETROIT, Michigan—Thirty years after Toyota launched Lexus and Nissan introduced Infiniti here, and 27 years after Chrysler smashed Cobo Hall’s front windows with the 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the North American International Auto Show is done with January. The reviews from jaded auto journos are mixed, and the press day crowds were down despite Toyota and China’s GAC flying in press from overseas. We’re pretty confident, though, in saying what Detroit lacked in quantity, it made up for in quality this year. There is more to like than there is to avoid, even if the Japanese and Chinese automakers are the only ones left who still build concepts, and even though Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Mini, Audi, and Volvo this year joined a bunch of other automakers who had followed Aston Martin’s decision to leave town after its Zen display of a decade ago. Herewith, our regular compendium of criticism, the good, the bad, and the philosophical, this time about what there is to see at the 2019 NAIAS:
HIT: Toyota Supra
Too many are getting stuck on the BMW partnership and the long gestation process, nitpicking the design, and decrying the lack of a manual transmission (which by the way Supra chief engineer Tetsuya Tada has not ruled out, so call your favorite dealer and demand it). Can we all just agree that what Toyota has done is give the world what by all accounts should be a nimble, kick-ass, rear-drive sports car that’s relatively attainable, price-wise? Call it whatever the hell you want, the fact that this car exists at all is pretty remarkable in this day and age. And it’s all but assured that hard-core variants will be in the offing. Yeah, what a terrible thing Toyota has done . . . not.—Mike Floyd
Automotive journalists can be a funny group. After wishing for a new Supra for years, some of them were overheard describing the final production car as less than thrilling, with others going so far as to call it “ugly.” “Look at all those fake plastic vents and intakes,” they decried. But as Supra designer Nobua Nakamura told editor-in-chief Mike Floyd, those nonfunctional pieces could become functional on future variants of the car. I don’t think the new Supra is perfect in the appearance department, and its roofline does look proportionally odd from some angles. But for the love of Suzuka, I’m excited to get a chance to drive it once test vehicles become available. If it lights up twisting roads as I expect it will, any niggling quibbles I have with its styling will go right off the nearest cliffside.—Mac Morrison
The biggest, most anticipated thing at this show is not an SUV, or even an autonomous tall electric sedan, but a sports car. Yes, it’s essentially a BMW Z4 built in Austria by Magna, but at least it has its own sheetmetal, which is more than you can say for the 86. And I’d take that Toyota 86 over most of the cars on the market today. Since the beginning of time, sports cars have relied on sharing some components to make development costs work out. In his introduction of the car, Akio Toyoda said he hopes Toyota will build more new sports cars in the future. Here’s to seeing him fulfill that wish.—Todd Lassa
MISS: Toyota Supra
This was easily the most anticipated car of the show, and I have no doubt it will be a blast to drive. But what is with Toyota outsourcing its performance cars? Sure, it’s great that Toyota will be selling a re-skinned BMW. But right in the same room as the BMW Supra is the Lexus LC, a 2018 Automobile All-Star and proof positive that Toyota knows how to design scintillating cars. With all the emphasis on making Camrys and RAV4s better to drive—which they are, by the way—what does it say when you outsource your halo sports car? I can’t imagine the effect this must have had on the morale of their engineering corps. “Nice job on the new Camrys, and oh, by the way, that new Supra? We’re getting BMW to do it.” Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to have the Supra back—but I’d prefer a Toyota Supra.—Aaron Gold
REVELATION: The Supra almost wasn’t a Supra
In a chat at the Detroit show with Supra chief designer Nobua Nakamura, he told us that in July of 2013 that he and his team started sketching out ideas for a model that was at first billed as a nameless sports-car project. It was only after seeing the positive reception given to the FT-1 concept—created by Toyota’s Calty design house in California—at the 2014 Detroit show that the FT-1 would become the primary design inspiration for the sports-car project that would eventually be dubbed Supra. And the rest, as they say, is history.—MF
HIT: Akio Toyoda
For giving the best speech I’ve seen at an auto show in years, if not ever. No boring sales numbers. No bits of badly faked enthusiasm. Toyoda-san’s speech was funny, it was too the point, and though it was scripted—I was reading it on the teleprompter along with him—it’s obvious he’s seriously jazzed about this car (even if it is an automatic BMW).—AG
HIT: Fernando Alonso
My wife thinks so, anyway. Alonso appeared briefly on stage with Akio Toyoda for the Toyota Supra launch. Toyoda was gracious in acknowledging that the two-time Formula 1 champion (for Ferrari) and one-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner (for Toyota) is driving another marque at the 24 Hours of Daytona later this month (a Cadillac).—TL
HIT: Ford Mustang Shelby GT500
For the jaded, it might be easy to look at the new GT500 and see just another jacked-up performance variant of Ford’s pony car. I get that . . . but whatever. More than 700 horsepower (what’s the final number, Ford?!) from the 5.2-liter supercharged V-8, a dual-clutch gearbox, zero to 60 mph in the mid-three-second range, a sub-11-second quarter-mile, magnetic dampers, and an optional Carbon-Fiber Track package with carbon wheels, rear-seat delete, and more? Find me a challenging road course and let’s get it on. Now.—MM
RELEVATION: Mahindra
This plucky Indian company is showing off its not-road-legal CJ-5 clone right in Jeep’s back yard. That takes cojones!—AG
HIT: Lexus LC Convertible concept
Rare is the car that gets scalped and doesn’t look great, but even rarer is a car as stunning to behold as the LC droptop. For all the coupe’s beauty—okay, some folks don’t like the spindle grille, but I think it works there—its overall attitude and stance strike me more as coming from a place of aggression. This concept elevates the LC to true elegance. I wouldn’t be shocked to see examples of the eventual production version at various concours d’élégance in the coming decades.—Erik Johnson
Yes, please. We love the LC hardtop, which was a 2018 All-Star, and with the top down, it takes the LC’s delightful GT style to another level.—MF
And here I thought it couldn’t get better than the LC coupe. Built it, Lexus! Build it, build it, build it!—AG
MISS: Cadillac XT6
It’s a damn shame what’s happened to Cadillac. Yes, I get it, its sedan sales are cratering and OMG it needs crossovers ASAP. I’m sure the XT6 and XT4 will be sales salve, but they come off as old GM badge-engineered exercises, and beyond the expressive grilles look uninspired. While they may put the brand back in the black, it’s sad to see really capable cars like the CT6 be minimized. At least Cadillac gave that car some serious attention in the form of the 550-hp CT6-V (which already is sold out). There is some hope in the form of the emerging EV strategy. Maybe those cars won’t have alphanumeric names.—MF
As another grizzled veteran told me, this three-row luxury SUV would have been a hit in 2012, or even 2016. While there’s nothing wrong with the new XT6 other than the Honda Pilot–esque side surfacing and the too-familiar GM interior plastics and switchgear, there’s nothing about it that pops. While I once believed that rear-wheel-drive proportions don’t matter on a tall SUV, the new Lincoln Aviator and even the 2020 Ford Explorer (gasp) have proved otherwise.—TL

2020 Toyota Supra Prototype Review: The Legendary Nameplate Returns
At the press briefing for the 2020 Toyota Supra preproduction drive, one of the car’s assistant chief engineers, Masayuki Kai, wondered aloud if any of the gathered journalists had driven its blood-brother 2019 BMW Z4. I raised my hand and looked around the room to find mine was the only one in the air. Suddenly, the Q&A and all eyes shifted. “What is it like?” Kai-san asked. “Different,” I replied. “Different, how?” he and his assembled team wanted to know. I was equally shocked that nobody on the Supra squad had driven the Z4, nor had any of BMW’s team driven the future Toyota. Despite the international nature of the joint project, it turns out strict German anti-trust laws forbid it—especially in light of the recent, highly publicized “Dieselgate” case. The forthcoming coupe-only two-seat Supra and the convertible-only two-seat Z4 production cars share the same hard points, wheelbase, track width, engine, transmission, differential, tires, etc. As we learned, however, the cars were developed separately and have completely different software, systems calibrations, and tuning. Now it makes perfect sense that the two would drive so differently. They really are automotive twins separated at birth. Before we get to that, though, let’s take a quick detour on the poetically circular synchronicity of Kai-san.
See the Toyota Supra NASCAR racer here.
Ohayo Gozai-tag
German diplomat and philologist Wilhelm von Humboldt once wrote, “How a person masters his fate is more important than what his fate is.” What does a 19th century German philosopher have to do with a 21st century Japanese automotive engineer, you ask? Kai-san’s parents were concert musicians who lived and performed in Germany, where Kai was born. He lived there for 10 years and so speaks German natively. His family moved back to Japan, where Kai would enter university and later earn his master’s degree in mechanical engineering. While working at Toyota, he would be given the opportunity to work for Toyota Gazoo Racing, where one of his projects was to find a solution to cool the battery pack of the Toyota hybrid World Endurance Championship (WEC) race car—yes, that eventual 2018 Le Mans–winning race car. Soon thereafter, Kai joined the Supra team and moved his family to Munich, where they have lived for the past five years. So you see, Masayuki Kai is singularly equipped to accomplish the requisite synergy and translation between BMW and Toyota. The serendipity of Kai’s fate is fascinating, to say the least. Oh, and his benchmark, standout car in terms of dynamics is the first-gen 986 Boxster. He loves how stable and adjustable it is in corners. This all bodes well for the Supra.
A90 + B58 = ???
The internal name for the 2020 Supra is A90, succeeding the previous A80 Supra that ended production in 2002, but which we last enjoyed stateside in 1998 with its twin-turbo I-6 making 320 horsepower. As all Supras have had (A40 to A80, and even the 2000 GT spiritual predecessor), the newest version is powered by an inline-six. In fact, the engine is BMW’s B58 3.0-liter twin-scroll single turbo that powers a handful of cars and SUVs. As generous as our Toyota hosts were, they would not share with us any specifications—at all. Not engine output, fuel consumption, dimensions, or pricing. Nada. As it happens, we do know much about the new BMW convertible, and the B58 engine in the Z4 M40i is rated at 382 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque in U.S. spec. Rumor has it that Toyota wasn’t given the “up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A” code to access full power. It won’t say what the final output will be other than “at least 300 horsepower.” We’ll know in December when the non-camo-clad Supra drive happens. But sadly, the Supras we drove in the hills outside Madrid and on the Jarama racing circuit didn’t feel as aggressively quick as the Z4 did. As with the BMW in Euro-spec, the B58 in the German-market Supra we drove is downrated due to an exhaust particulate filter. In the Z4, the filter chokes a significant 47 hp to result in a mere 335 hp. Perhaps that’s the difference I felt.
As with the Z4, there will not be a manual transmission with this engine (wait, what?), but the ubiquitous ZF eight-speed automatic leads to an electronically controlled clutch-pack differential. Both tuned/mapped by Toyota. The differential is two-way, meaning it’s adjustable on both the traction and drag sides and is steplessly variable from 0 to 100 percent. There’s a launch-control system, and Toyota says that Supra will run 0–60 mph in “less than 5 seconds.” We say that’s conservative and will go out on a limb and predict 4.5 seconds.
Chassis
According to Toyota, the three keys to making a pure sports car are the right combination of wheelbase, track width, and center of gravity. Although we’ve never heard it applied to cars, Toyota is very proud that the Supra’s wheelbase-to-track-width relationship comes tantalizingly close to the golden ratio (1.62). In the Supra it computes to a 1.54 ratio. Our last two Best Driver’s Car winners (Lamborghini Huracan Performante and Ferrari 488 GTB) were closer still, with a 1.59 relationship. There might be something to this. When it comes to the Supra’s center of gravity, Toyota is equally proud to point out that it’s lower than that of the Toyota GT86. That’s impressive since that car has a low-pro flat-four Subaru engine, not a tall I-6. The front strut, rear multilink suspension’s spring rates, adjustable multimode adaptive shocks, anti-roll bars, bump stops, and single-ratio electric-assist power steering were all tailored by Toyota for the Supra. We’re told these elements are still open for final calibration—and the stories they will read from the international press corps will help steer them. There are Normal, Sport, Sport Plus, and full-off modes that affect stability control, throttle tip-in, exhaust tone, gear changes, suspension damping, and steering weight. Finally, we were told the car would be “under 1,500 kilograms” (3,307 pounds) and Toyota is aiming for 50/50 weight distribution.
Track Time
As luck would have it, I was in group one at the press drive, which meant my first taste of the new Supra would be on the undulating 2.4-mile, 13-turn Jarama circuit. With a half-mile front straight and corners with names like Nuvolari, Fangio, and Ascari, it’s a tricky track. The last Formula 1 race was held there in 1981 because the runoff is negligible. OK, let’s do this. We had brave pro drivers riding shotgun to help point us to the racing line and the correct side of the track over the blind brow. The first impression was how smoothly and quietly the Supra accelerated and shifted, even in Sport mode. We’re told the U.S.-spec car will sound a bit more gnarly. Acceleration is linear without an iota of turbo lag, and this is accentuated by the buttery up- and downshifts. In Sport mode, the Z4 M40i is quicker, sharper and sportier in these respects, but that’s by design. Both cars are tuned for an effect, and the Supra simply feels more fluid, and in a good way. The first laps, I was feeling my way around and listening to the instructions. On the first flier down the straight (second lap) I pressed the brake pedal, then pressed it further, and further, and my instructor started to say, “More brakes, more brakes” with a hairpin approaching. “Wow, that’s a long pedal and not much feel or bite,” I announce. “Is this a brake-by-wire system?” I ask. He didn’t know, but the four-pot Brembo calipers with large-diameter vented steel discs aren’t the problem. Later in the pits, I learned these are pure hydraulic brakes with stock pads and DOT 4 fluid. Hmm. In the next session, I tried a different car with the same results. I’ll venture it’s the booster tuning. I’d prefer less travel and more bite sooner in the pedal stroke—like the Z4 has.
As confidence and speed increased, I probed the grip in the corners. There’s plenty available from the Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires (255/35R19 front, 275/35R19 100Y rear, same as the Z4). The turn-in characteristics are excellent, obedient, and confident. About midway ’round a slow corner, however, I find I’m dialing in more and more steering without the front tires making a noise. I didn’t overcook it, and it’s understeer, for sure—but it’s mild, not terminal. If the steering ratio were variable, not by vehicle speed, but by steering input (quicker ratio as you turn the wheel), it could address or mask the problem. That’s likely off the table since the rack must be a done deal. Perhaps looking into the front anti-roll bar diameter or spring rates, or using the differential to drag the inside wheel are still possible before final sign-off. The way the Supra exits corners is perfect. The e-diff puts power down without a fuss, and as the steering unwinds there’s an adjustable amount of slide if you want it. All things considered, there are still ways to make the Supra a better track car, but that’s not necessarily what it was engineered for.
Into the Hills
Fully 90 percent of the Supra’s development was done on public roads—hence the plethora of spy photos. It’s also the reason the car really shined on the hills outside of Madrid. Since we were again required to have a handler in the car with us, a second chase car, a GT86, was piloted solo by the second journalist until our scheduled driver swaps. After the mixed results on the track, I wasn’t ready for how well the very same cars felt on the road. That long brake pedal I experienced on the track wasn’t as big a concern in the real world. There was still mild understeer and a need to dial in a bunch of steering for tighter corners, but even at double the posted speed limits, the corners were confidently within the Supra’s ability. What’s more is that as good as the GT86 inherently is, it didn’t have a chance against the Supra. At one point, I was sandwiched between two 86s: a skilled driver ahead and a less skilled driver in tow. I could see the driver in front driving the tires off of his car, and I was just waiting, looking for a place to pass. It wasn’t just a horsepower advantage, either. The Supra had what felt like double the grip and half the body roll. I didn’t pass because if I had, I’d lose my swap partner following us.
The next revelation was how utterly quiet the Supra was on the highway. With nearly zero wind noise and barely registered tire noise, the only surfaces that upset it were exceptionally open or coarse pavement. Also, the dampers in Normal mode wiped away almost every surface irregularity. The difference between Normal and Sport modes is palpable, as it should be. This is an excellent road car.
Shrouded From View
I wish I could tell you how the interior looks, but it remained covered the entire day in black felt with flaps for critical switches. Toyota popped the rear hatch only briefly, but I saw that the largely flat cargo area connects to the rest of the cabin by an open pass-through a la Corvette, which makes the quiet ride even more remarkable. The seats were leather and well bolstered. The Supra has the same steering wheel as the Z4, and the buttons and switches I did see were the exact same as those in the Z4—all of them. What is different is the instrument panel, which isn’t standard-issue analog BMW. It’s more of a digital affair. We’re told that despite using the same iDrive-based infotainment system and display as the Z4, the graphics will be unique to the Supra. Along with the EPS fine tuning, we were told this HMI is one of the last things Toyota is still sorting out.
Final Thoughts
Even at this late stage in the car’s development, there’s still time to tune out the mid-corner understeer and brake pedal malady before the Supra goes on sale in mid-2019. Once Toyota address these slight conditions, the Supra will be ready to shame a Nissan 370Z and go toe to toe with a Porsche 718 Cayman, or heck, even the BMW Z4. Wouldn’t that be a great Head2Head for Jethro and Jonny? Whether or not the lack of power I felt, compared to the Z4, is negotiable with BMW remains a buzz-worthy rumor in the industry. Time will tell. With a ballpark price of about $60,000, the Supra will be an aspirational sports car, and as such, it had better defend that territory with legitimate performance. Oh, I nearly forgot to mention that Toyota fully tested the Supra’s ability to do donuts and drifts during its development from PerformanceJunk WP Feed 3 https://ift.tt/2I8SJd1 via IFTTT

2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback: First Drive Review Look out Honda Civic, Mazda3 and Hyundai Elantra GT, coming this summer: the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback. Replacing the Corolla iM, which was, in essence, an orphaned Scion iM, the redesigned Corolla hatch touts a new engine, new transmissions, new architecture, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 and, wait for it, Apple CarPlay. Yes, Apple CarPlay! Relegated to the ash heap along with much of the rest of Toyota's great attract-young-male-buyers experiment Scion (the Yaris iA lives on, as does the FR-S in the guise of the 86), the Corolla iM is no more. Let's face it, the Yaris iA notwithstanding, the iM simply didn't fit with Toyota nomenclature. The name needed jettisoning, and what better time to do that than a major overhaul? Approaching 45 million in total worldwide units sold since its introduction in 1966, the Corolla remains king of the nameplate-sales hill. We think the new hatchback version will further elevate the Corolla's showroom success. It's a clearly better car than the iM, pushing forward both the Toyota and Corolla legacies. We spent a day driving the 2019 Toyota Corolla in and around Del Mar, CA at its national media launch in April, and, although we think it's better than the outgoing iM in every respect, it didn't elbow its way to the head of the compact hatchback class. Deuces Wild If you have the Corolla on your mind in July, head into your local Toyota showroom and check out the SE and XSE. Toyota doubled the number of grades offered by the iM. Apparently in an effort to keep us on the edge of our seats, Toyota has yet to announce pricing; but the current Corolla iM with a 6-speed manual transmission opens the bidding at $20,485, including factory delivery charge. We guess the prices of the two 2019 grades will bracket that amount by within a grand or so. Every 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback will come with alloy wheels, seven airbags, blind spot monitoring, a backup camera, automatic climate control, a leather shift knob, paddle shifters for the CVT, SmartKey, two USB ports, an Entune audio interface with an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa and the second-generation Toyota Safety Sense. I'm Givin' Ya All She's Got, Cap'n Powering the Corolla hatch is an all-new 2.0-liter Dynamic Force 4-cylinder engine. Dynamic Force is a bit of an overstatement for this 168-horsepower 4-banger that also produces 151 lb-ft of torque. And, that peak number doesn't arrive until 4800 rpm. When the light turns green, it doesn't exactly explode off the line. It is, however, more robust than the 137-hp 1.8-liter mill in the iM it replaces. It does get rolling with some degree of enthusiasm -- more so with the 6-speed manual transmission than the CVT, despite the CVT's fixed first gear. Not only is the manual gear box smooth, but it also benefits from rev matching that further evens out transitions between cogs both during up shifts and down shifts. Both transmissions are all-new for 2019. Like its suggested retail price, the newest Corolla Hatchback's EPA-estimated numbers remain a mystery. New engine. New transmissions. Almost 60 days from being on-sale.
