R.I.P. Frankie Beverly
Tumblr media
R&B singing legend Frankie Beverly died Tuesday at age 77, according to an announcement from his family on Instagram. Beverly is known as the creator of the cookout anthem "Before I Let Go," which is also known as the last song of the night at parties through the generations. The Philadelphia native started his career as a teenager in the '60s when he formed his first singing group, The Blenders.  By 1967, he had put together The Butlers and released his first single, "If That's What You Wanted." When Beverly and his band moved to San Francisco, Marvin Gaye's sister-in-law took notice and introduced them to the Motown singer. Gaye suggested they change their name from Raw Soul to Maze and let them be his opening act. Their association with Gaye helped them get a record deal with Capitol Records and their first album, Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly, was released in 1977. "Happy Feelin's" was one of their first hit records, and it helped the album reach gold status.
Maze went on to become one of the premier soul groups of the '70s and '80s thanks to songs like "Golden Time Of Day," "Feel That You're Feelin,'" "Southern Girl," "We Are One," "Runnin' Away," and "Can't Get Over You." They were legendary for giving some of the best live shows, and Beverly's music became synonymous with African-American life. The cultural significance of his music was centered and celebrated for 15 years at the Essence Music Festival, where he was the closing act. The connecting ability of his music had attendees from around the country dancing together on the main floor doing the Electric Slide as if they were family members.  Beyoncé covered "Before I Let Go" in 2019  and Mr. Beverly told Billboard it made him "feel bigger than ever." Earlier this year, Mr. Beverly went on a farewell tour, and it was announced that Maze would continue to perform with new vocalist Tony Lindsay. Essence honored Beverly, who attended this year at the festival, and Anthony Hamilton, Doug E. Fresh, and Luke James performed.

Tanduay Bacolod Rum Fest Set August 10-18 With “Ambagan” as Theme
The fourth Tanduay Bacolod Rum Festival recognizes the different roles people play in building a community as it chooses “Ambagan” for this year’s theme. Happening from August 10 to 18, this year’s event promises food, arts, music and thrills for everyone to enjoy.
Tumblr media
A feast that started as an homage to the city’s sugarcane, which is the main source for Tanduay’s award-winning rums, the event has been held annually since 2019.
“On this same ground, my father, Lucio K. Tan Jr., together with Councilor Em Ang, announced the inception of the Tanduay Bacolod Rum Festival. The festival was born out of a desire to ensure that Bacolod, the City of Smiles, remains the heart and home of Tanduay. That wherever Tanduay goes, Bacolod will always be a part of its story,” said Lucio Tan III, President, LT Group and Tanduay Distillers, Inc., before a full house press conference held at the Century Park Hotel in Pasay City, Metro Manila.
Tan, likewise, cited the strong collaboration of Tanduay with the local government in mounting the annual festival. “What’s remarkable about this collaboration is that we are able to tell the story of Bacolod and Tanduay by highlighting their culinary heritage and the artistic prowess of the Bacolodnon, whether in cocktail-making, painting, music, or dance. That, in essence, is what this Rum Festival is all about,” he further said.
On the part of the local government, Councilor Em Ang, Chairman of Bacolod City History, Culture, and Arts, said: “On behalf of our City Government led by our beloved Mayor Albee Benitez, I would like to thank each and every one of you for your continued support. Together, we have built a celebration that not only honors our heritage but also paves the way for future generations to appreciate and cherish. Supporting initiatives like this festival is crucial in preserving our culture and boosting our local economy.”
Tumblr media
Through the different facets of the festival, participants are encouraged to contribute, whether through culinary delights, visual arts, and more. On August 10, a motorcade heading to the Bacolod City Government Center (BCGC) will signal the opening of the festival, where local government officials led by Mayor Albee Benitez are expected to grace the ribbon-cutting ceremonies of the Food Park. The Food Park will feature nightly entertainment, local and international culinary delights, and mixology. The Food Park will be open until the last day of the festival on August 18.
On August 12, a Mixology Competition will take place at the Ayala Malls Capitol Center. On August 14-15, the Culinaria Competition will be held. August 16 is designated as Rum Education Day, featuring a Tanduay Plant Tour, followed by a Rum Masterclass and the nationwide Grand Finals of the Mixology Competition at the Seda Hotel.
Tumblr media
On August 17, a motorcade parade featuring some of Bacolod’s beauty queens, with Tanduay Brand Ambassador Derek Ramsay, will begin in the afternoon, followed by a Street Dance Competition and a concert at the BCGC. Bands Juan Karlos and Almost will headline this year's concert performers.

Cornelius presents: "Too Much Love for Sauna (Falling Deep)"
Post-Modern Pop artists Cornelius releases bewitching New Single and Vide.
Tumblr media
Forthcoming Ambient LP Ethereal Essence Out June 26
youtube
Stream/Order Ethereal Essence here
“Too Much Love for Sauna” unfurls like a fractal melody from an otherworldly music box, layering delicate tones and textures organically, enveloping audiences in a sublime experience. The piece also has a fun story behind it.
“This song was written for the TV drama, SADO, and has been used as the opening theme since 2019,” Cornelius says. “In the past few years, there has been an unprecedented sauna boom in Japan, and the original manga was the spark that ignited it. I was a fan of the artist and decided to take charge of the project. The single we are distributing this time is a newly arranged version that expresses the psychedelic ecstasy of the sauna more deeply.”
A noticeable shift in direction from his famed hopscotch pop style to a more meditative and abstract approach, Ethereal Essence marks Cornelius’ first full-length album since the critically acclaimed Dream in Dream (2023), and Mellow Waves (2017) LPs. Dream in Dream’s singles and videos – "Change and Vanish”, “Sparks” and "All Things Must Pass" – were received adoringly throughout 2023.
Reflecting on the evolution of his sound, Cornelius explains, “I gathered songs that have an ethereal feel from the various purposes for which they have been produced over the past few years and I decided to make one album. With the current strange situation in the world and the stressful social life, I feel comfortable with something that fits into the introspection and spiritual world. Last year, I exhibited my work at Ambient Kyoto in Kyoto with Ryuichi Sakamoto and others.” In addition to Sakamoto and Cornelius (whose collaboration wowed audiences and critics), the prestigious festival also included Shiro Takatani, Buffalo Daughter, and Seiichi Yamamoto, a noteworthy lineup overflowing with genius highlighting Kyoto’s significance in the world of music and art.
instagram
Cornelius’ current focus is nothing new. The songwriter, producer, and performer has been a fan of ambient music his whole life and includes Raymond Scott’s “Soothing Sounds for Baby,” Hiroshi Yoshimura’s Music for Nine Postcards, Jonny Nash’s Exit Strategies, The Sweet Enough’s Marshmallow, and Steve Hiett’s Down on the Road by the Beach among his favorite ambient albums of all time.
The upcoming 30th anniversary Dream in Dream World Tour features Cornelius’ 20-year compatriots Hirohisa Horie on keyboards (also a support member for Yukihiro Takahashi’s Yellow Magic Orchestra) and Yuko Araki on drums (also a member of Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band along with Cornelius); and Buffalo Daughter’s Yumiko Ohno on Moog and bass, who joined Cornelius in 2016 on his indelible Fantasma World Tour. Cornelius and his band will be playing songs from his five previous albums since 1992, beginning with the landmark LP Fantasma. He encourages old fans and new to experience this next wave in sound in person. “We are grateful to everyone who has supported our activities. Please come and see us.”

Camera Obscura Announces First New Album In Over Ten Years + New Song “Big Love”
Tumblr media
FEELS: Soft and warm wool SOUNDS: Camera Obscura at their best We are super-excited about Camera Obscura returning after 10 years! Look to the East, Look to the West, the latest album by Camera Obscura, stands as a monumental achievement. Under the leadership of Tracyanne Campbell, the group, collaborating again with producer Jari Haapalainen, delivers an album that resonates with long-time devotees for its familiar charm, yet marks their most refined work yet. This album represents the most significant challenge Camera Obscura has faced in their journey, especially after the loss of founding member Carey Lander in 2015. The band entered a prolonged break, maintaining contact but leaving their future uncertain. However, they made a triumphant return, first announced with their participation in the Belle & Sebastian's 2019 Boaty Weekender cruise festival, followed by two highly anticipated shows in Glasgow. "Look to the East, Look to the West" was recorded in the iconic room where Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” was born, showcasing Camera Obscura's heightened confidence and distinct musical identity. The album captures the essence of the band at its peak, weaving a complex tapestry of emotions that leaves listeners both melancholic and uplifted. Camera Obscura's music has always been impactful, with numerous songs considered transformative by their fans. This album adds 11 more such tracks to their repertoire, each with the potential to be a life-altering anthem. See “Big Love” below: Read the full article

Entertaining Shows and Movies for Creative Breaks
Great TV Shows and Movies to Enjoy When You're Not Busy Being Creative Yourself Here's a selection of European, Australian, and American shows and movies that are well worth your time.
The following recommendations from Indigo Kashmir are provided in no particular order of preference. Ever felt that sinking feeling when you invest your time in a show or movie only to regret it once it ends? Fear not, as the following list includes enjoyable and entertaining shows. Some are thought-provoking and inspirational. We hope you find them enjoyable.
Tumblr media
Vienna Blood (2019 - ): Max Liebermann, a student of Sigmund Freud, collaborates with Detective Rheinhardt to investigate a series of disturbing murders set against the backdrop of the grand cafes and opera houses of 1900s Vienna.
This show offers a delightful blend of history and a touch of Sherlock Holmes, all set in the charming city of Vienna. It features intriguing characters and incorporates elements of forensic science and psychoanalysis. If you're a fan of shows like Sherlock, this one is definitely worth a try. It's not overly violent or gory, and the fantastic interiors and vintage fashion add to its appeal. Keep an eye out for the upcoming season 4.
Tumblr media
Lykkeland 'State of Happiness' (2018-2022): On the night before Christmas in 1969, the gas flare at the Ocean Viking is ignited. Phillips has discovered the largest subsea oil basin in history, and everything is on the brink of change.
This beautifully shot and highly engaging show explores the transformative impact of Norway's oil discovery on the country and the small coastal town of Stavanger. Before watching, we had never considered what Norway was like before its oil era or how the country established a State Company to manage the newfound wealth for the benefit of all citizens. It's a truly fascinating story, and we absolutely loved it. We've only had the chance to watch season one. Even if you're typically drawn to Scandinavian murder mysteries, you'll likely find this show highly enjoyable. And if you do enjoy suspenseful dramas, we think you'll be entertained as well.
Tumblr media
Dash and Lily (2020): In this whirlwind holiday romance, cynical Dash and optimistic Lily exchange dares, dreams, and desires in a notebook they pass back and forth at various locations throughout New York City.
This is a heartwarming, charming, and uplifting rom-com set against the backdrop of the Christmas season. It's a delightful, old-fashioned feel-good series that will leave a smile on your face and infuse you with the holiday spirit. This universal story about finding someone you like is simply lovely. While Netflix has cancelled it after one season, it's still absolutely worth watching. It's an original series that captures the festive essence beautifully, and we thoroughly enjoyed it.
Tumblr media
Tick, tick...Boom! (2021): This film is based on the autobiographical musical by playwright Jonathan Larson. It tells the story of an aspiring composer in New York City who grapples with doubts about his career choice while navigating the complexities of love and friendship.
While it is a musical, it's a unique one where characters don't sing their dialogue. The film is beautifully written, acted, and shot, delivering an exceptional cinematic experience. Andrew Garfield's versatility and talent shine through, and the entire cast is incredibly talented. We adored every aspect of this film. It's not only creatively inspiring but also deeply moving. We highly recommend it for anyone seeking inspiration and a memorable cinematic journey.
Tumblr media
800 Words (2015 - 2018): George Turner, a popular columnist for a top-selling Sydney newspaper, writes a weekly column of precisely 800 words. However, after his wife's passing, he impulsively buys a new home in the fictional New Zealand seaside town of Weld, a place filled with childhood memories. When he breaks the news to his two teenage children, Shay and Arlo, the vibrant and curious locals of Weld ensure that Turner's fresh start doesn't go as planned.
Warning: This show will likely awaken your desire to leave everything behind and move to New Zealand. We can't recommend it enough! It's an absolutely heartwarming, feel-good series that provides a lovely escape from the everyday stresses. You might even find yourself searching for a holiday to New Zealand to discover your very own little Weld.
The show's wit shines through, with a delightful array of interesting, funny, and endearing characters. What's particularly commendable is how it addresses various important issues in a sweet manner, including grief, matters of the heart, bullying, finding one's place in the world, friendships, and cyberbullying. Australia and New Zealand boast exceptional writers, actors, and directors, and the entire cast in this show is simply perfect. Watch it, and you won't be disappointed.
Tumblr media
Hacks (2021 - ): In this series, a dark mentorship develops between Deborah Vance, a legendary Las Vegas comic, and an entitled, outcast 25-year-old comedy writer.
It's an original, witty, and humorous show that's nothing short of fantastic, guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. The cast, especially Jean Smart, is outstanding. We wholeheartedly recommend it. However, it's worth noting that we found the second season to be not quite as good as the first.
Tumblr media
Manhattan (2014 - 2015): In Los Alamos, New Mexico, a group of American scientists are trying to build the globe's first atomic bomb in the midst of WWII, while their kin are trying to survive the secrecy of the project.
While the show takes some creative liberties for dramatic effect and may not be 100% historically accurate, it remains a fantastic series. With excellent acting, writing, and production, it offers a thought-provoking experience. We highly recommend it, especially if you're a fan of historical dramas, World War II narratives, or simply appreciate well-crafted shows.
We have a deep appreciation for excellent and original writing, beautifully produced shows, and thought-provoking stories. Stay tuned for more recommendations in the future. If you've watched any of these shows or have recommendations of your own, why not get in touch with us? We're always on the lookout for new and captivating shows to explore.

Once Upon a Time in Hyde Park...
Since many of you have asked for a run-down of the “Hyde Park” incident, I figured I would do a run-through of some of the things that happened prior, and after.... 😅 I hope you have a comfortable chair.....  😏
Sooo.....  The “Spider-Man: Far From Home” movie premiere was held in LA on June 26th, 2019.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That same day, Z was interviewed on the red carpet, and almost slipped up when describing her “perfect day”, which she said would include: “cuddling with my b- ....my Noon...my dog” lol. 😅  Did someone forget that they were no longer in a relationship? 🤔
youtube
Whitney (Z’s cousin) was also pictured at the premiere with Tom’s family (Nikki, Sam) and Tuwaine’s ex gf. Ironically, Whitney also started to follow Haz, Sam, and Anthony on June 27th.
Later on, that SAME night (June 26th), Z is spotted taking a photo with a fan, and she’s wearing Tom’s shirt after the FFH premiere. 🤔  Ironically, what’s even weirder is that just a week PRIOR, Tom’s mom Nikki had liked a fan’s edit video that was posted to Instagram (June 19th) where the joke/caption was that Tom was basically describing Zendaya when asked about his “ideal girl”.
Then, the very next day, on June 27th, Tom, Jake and Zendaya all visited a Children’s Hospital in LA to help bring some joy and cheer up some sick children. 😊
Tumblr media
On June 28th, Tom is spotted landing at the airport in Seoul, Korea.
Tumblr media
On June 30th, Z is on her way to Paris, France.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Z attends the Lancome/Idole event in Paris on July 2nd.
Tumblr media
Tom posted a story from his home in London on July 4th, so he was definitely back home from S. Korea by then.
Z then flew to New Orleans for the Essence Festival which was held on July 7th.
On July 13th, Tom is spotted with Keegan Michael Key at F1 for the British Grand Prix Racing Event in London.
Tumblr media
Haz & Tuwaine were also there as well.
Tumblr media
Then.....July 14th happened.....👀 *cue “Jaws” theme music*
On July 14th Tom was spotted at the Hyde Park Music Festival with the Black Eyed Peas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pictures of Tom and one of the Black Eyed Peas lead singers started popping up around July 15th.  The singer had posted pictures of herself with Tom with the caption originally stating: “Do I pass as the new MJ?”, but then she quickly deleted it once fans started to jump down her throat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
THEN.....
On July 17th, 2019 (aka “The TomdayApocalypse” 😅) all H-E-double-hockey-sticks breaks loose when TMZ reports that Tom was spotted with a “Mystery Blonde” at the Hyde Park Festival in London, with pictures to match (pictures were taken from July 14th at the festival). 😲
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They were also spotted holding hands later on that evening (July 14th).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fandom FBI Services quickly figure out that the “Mystery Blonde” that Tom was with is indeed Olivia Bolton, a family friend that has known Tom & the Hollands for years.
A lot of fans quickly notice however, that Tom is still wearing the Jillian Adrich neck chain around his neck that Zendaya gave him (which he wore during the press tour), even though he’s with Olivia.  Needless to say, the fandom was confused lol.🥴
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile, ACROSS THE POND....
On July 19th, Z posts a video of herself trying to learn how to play the Spider-Man video game while Kamil patiently teaches her.
Tumblr media
On July 21st Kamil posts a video of Z playing the Spider-Man game again....
Tumblr media
July 21st - Z has been playing the Spider-man game non-stop the past few days lol... (via Darnell | IG)  The girl is OBSESSED! 😂🤣
On July 24th, Z is STILL playing the Spider-Man PS game with Kamil, this time while wearing the MJ sweater from FFH.  (Was this a subtle message to fans that she and Tom are okay and that she has nothing against him?  OR, was she trying hard to appear “unbothered”?  🤷)
Tumblr media
As if things weren’t weird enough already, on July 25th, Z is then spotted out with Darnell wearing an outfit that is eerily similar to the one Tom wore during the FFH press tour lol. 👀
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On July 27th, Z goes on a hike with her family.  Then, on July 28th,  Z goes on yet another family hike (sound familiar? 😏).
Looks like Tom took a walk on July 27th as well...
Meanwhile....  BOTH sides of the fandom are freaking out and having meltdowns over the TOlivia pap pictures that surfaced on July 17th (which were taken on July 14th). On one hand, some fans are going off claiming that Tom “cheated on Zendaya”, and on the other hand, other fans are claiming that Olivia is “just a friend” or a “cousin”.  Antis begin claiming that Olivia was Tom’s “real gf” all along. 🙄  Overall, most Tomdaya stans are confused and are wondering if the pair are still together...with most holding out hope that there’s something still there.
At one point, some TOXIC fans are going so overboard with the “cheating” claims and even tagging Tom’s friends, that Tuwaine takes to Twitter to support and defend Tom by basically implying that fans have no idea what they’re even talking about.
In the midst of all of this, Olivia is starting to get a lot of hate online from fans on both sides of the fandom, to the point where her friends are dm’ing Tolivia fan accounts begging them to please respect her privacy.  Meanwhile, Olivia has started to withdraw from social media and go private.
Tumblr media
On July 29th, Tom is spotted in a picture with fans at the Glasgow airport in Scotland. Apparently he’s with his Dad on the trip.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On July 30th Tom posts to his IG a post of him golfing at the Loch Lomond Golf Club in Scotland.  Apparently he and his dad took a father-son trip. His caption reads: “Needed this!”   Z likes his post.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
August 1st - Tom & Harry appear to be on a road trip together.
On August 12th, Z’s mom Claire like’s this Tom-related post (below) on IG, which pretty much confirms to fans that Tom must NOT have cheated on her daughter, otherwise there is NO way Claire would be liking a post like THIS lol:
Tumblr media
To add to even MORE confusion, on August 19th, Tom posts a picture of him at London Heathrow airport wearing “The Tomdaya Jacket” while on his way to LA.😱
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On August 21st Claire shows Tom more love by liking his comment on the WiresOnly post of Tom.  Apparently he drove down to Malibu.
Tumblr media
On the same day (August 21st), Z posts a story of her hanging out with her mom & Darnell, proving that even though Tom is in LA, she is not with him, and she is “unbothered”... 😏
On Saturday, August 24th, Tom attends the D23 Expo in Anaheim, CA.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also on August 24th, Z hosts a paint night early birthday party over her house. Some fans swear that they think Tom was there that night, others feel that there’s no way he would be there....especially giving the circumstances of his travel to another con that was scheduled in Philly the very next morning.  But some swear that he was since the paint instructor said “Tom Holland” was there....(Was it a case of mistaken identity?  Or a case of just wanting to get some clout/attention to her tweet if BOTH Zendaya AND “Spider-Man” are there? Who knows? 🤷)
Tumblr media
Whether Tom was there or not we don’t know 100% for sure, BUT...one thing is DEFINITELY for sure...A certain Aussie co-star was surely there....  😏
Tumblr media
I think I’m just going to stop here, since we ALL already know what happened NEXT in this “timeline of events” lol... 😏
THE END.
If you’re bored, you can also go and check out my other recounting of events:
Once Upon a Time in NYC (Jacdaya)
***A very special THANK YOU goes out to @spidermaninlove and her blog for some of the links and “receipts”.  😊

THE GAZETTE NEO INTERVIEW
MASS HYSTERIA
Neo magazine 209
Interviewer and translator(?) - David West
-
Posting this for purely archival purposes and also so that anyone outside the UK can read the interview, if you live in UK support the magazine ect and all that good stuff.
Also Ruki's not in this interview for some unexplained reason.
-
URUHA: ‘For me, I’m always working to exceed what we did before, so regardless I’m always motivated to push forwards and reach our highest production level yet.’
REITA: ‘It’s definitely a milestone [on it being their tenth album] It would feel even more like one if we went on tour though. I feel like my own expectations, and the expectations of the other members, are even bigger than those of the fans.’
KAI: ‘Just because it’s our tenth album doesn’t mean it should be put on a pedestal, but as a career milestone it’s an achievement. It’s also something that we cannot possibly make without expectations from fans, so I’m grateful for that pressure!’
AOI: ‘World events and my own personal demons have stood in the way from it feeling like a proper milestone, when I make a piece of music, I’m often projecting my mental state into a new shape. As such, I don’t really feel any pressure. That’s not to say there aren’t parts I don’t like, but it’s hard for me to convey such nuances with words.’
REITA: ‘I believe the essence of the GazettE’s sound is the continued expression of these three things; intensity, melody and atmosphere.’
KAI: ‘There’s certainly songs with varying atmospheres on this record, each of them a powerful weapon in the arsenal of the GazettE, and I believe the true essence is found when we perform live. When I’m working on new material at the back of my mind, I’m imagining how this is going to be performed.’
AOI: ‘The most important thing to consider is how the performance of a particular song fits in with the flow of a show. Because of this, individual songs can be extravagant or calm. I want people to enjoy the album as if it’s a fine meal with a variety of dishes, and not just one main dish.’
AOI: ‘We’re a band of many parts and skills, where there’s something missing, another member can fill the space and bring back the balance. That is how we were able to maintain balance. Together we can be a strong unit.’
KAI: [Usually someone brings a demo to the rest of the band that needs everyone to add their finishing touches] ‘This time we we did it that way too, but also the tracks HOLD and FRENZY were made from scratch with all the members involved’
REITA: [On those two songs evolving the most through conception to the album] ‘There was an intro we had that was difficult to progress from, we took some time out and discussed what we can do to fix it, while also imagining the excitement of playing it live. We kept trying and testing to see what would work until we settled on the version you hear now.’
KAI: [On how the songs on the album were narrowed down from 40 to 11] ‘There was no particular reason the final songs made the cut besides the inspiration that came from all five members, these were the ones we thought were the absolute coolest of the bunch!’
AOI: ‘I feel like we’ve lost valuable time for all those involved in the live music industry. Like with athletes, sometimes a small break can make a big difference.’
REITA: ‘It’s made me hit the gym more than usual to work on my strength and to release stress. At least when I hit the stage again, I’ll be in my best physical condition yet!’
Kai: ‘As a way to deal with my feelings I’ve been practicing and imagining that we’re in front of an audience. It’s been two years now since we were last onstage, so next time I’m there let’s push things beyond the boundaries of imagination.’
Aoi: [On their popularity outside of Japan] ‘It still blows my mind that we cannot speak another language except Japanese, yet our music can cross many seas. I’m very grateful to have such an opportunity.’
REITA: [On his most memorable gig outside of Japan being Russia’s Kubana rock festival] ‘It took us over 30 hours to get there, and then the bus from the airport to the hotel took a while too. By the time we finally arrived it was the middle of the night and I was starving. I was handed a lunchbox with my room key, and opened it up. I was surprised to find a banana and some cucumbers.’
AOI: [On their first UK gig] ‘From the day before the show many people had lined up outside the venue and I realised that all these people had big expectations for us. However, on that day, the venue was double-booked due to a mistake by the promoter and we had to end early. As a result, from the past 12 years I have felt as if I have estranged the fans by betraying them. I’m really grateful for everyone who accepted the GazettE when we visited in 2019 and asked us to come again. Of course, after the situation in the world calms down, I definitely want to come back to the UK!’
KAI: ‘Of course! Where there’s a call for the GazettE we will surely answer’.

#BlackExcellence365 Spotlight: Afrochella
Hey Tumblr! It’s been a while but we’re back again with another #BlackExcellence365 spotlight that transcends from Ghana. We had the pleasure of talking to the founders of @afrochella and their efforts to bring the African and African-American diaspora through music, culture, and the motherland.
For those wondering, what is Afrochella and how did the birth of this festival in Ghana originate?
Afrochella is an opportunity for us to celebrate the contributions of creatives from and within Africa.
Every December, Africans flock home for the holidays. The one thing that has always been clear is the caliber of talent and resourcefulness amongst Ghanaians specifically those coming home for the holidays across all industries. We felt there was a need to harness this greatness.
Early 2017, Abdul called Kenny discussing these ideas and on a whim asked Kenny to reserve the Accra Polo Court and Kenny said, why not. Edward, the third founder was recruited to unpack the branding of ideas and marketing. Later, Vernell Akyempong and Emmanuel joined the leadership team to spearhead art, design and community involvement respectively. Together the team unpacked the ideas and created Afrochella.
We’ve seen the recent crossover of Afrobeat in the U.S in the past couple of years. Why is creating this festival and bridging the gap between Africans and Black Americans so important for the culture?
Kenny: We need to change the narrative from a discussion that separates us to a conversation that brings us together. Afrochella understands educating both sides of a shared culture will benefit and unite the diaspora. One of our mantra for 2019 is Empowering Me, Empowers Our home. This simply means, a bridging of the gap between Africans and the Diaspora will strengthen the continent and the resolve of our people everywhere.
Abdul: Bridging the gap between Africans and Black North Americans is very important for the culture because I lived in both worlds. We can highlight two cultures in one. I was born and raised in the US, and it was not cool when I said I was African. But now African is the new sexy and that is mainly because of music. Afrobeat music is showing the other side of what Africans are capable of.
Vernell: First of all, there's no America without Africa! The truth of Black America lies in Africa. Bridging these separate but equal groups is essential to the freedom of any black person. For me it's about time we celebrate OUR culture.
Ghana’s and West African culture in general is seen in today’s Black culture in the U.S. How does Afrochella showcase Ghanaian culture?
Edward: We showcase Ghanaian culture through food, music, art and cultural displays. Our goal is to ensure all of the attendees feel the vibration of the culture during their time at the festival. Ghanaians as a whole are welcoming people. We want to showcase the Ghanaian culture by the sites, sound and delights. That is why our four pillars at Afrochella are Food, Art, Music and Culture. Once you land at the airport in Accra, you can just feel that you are at home.
How does Afrocehlla embody the essence of #BlackExcellence365?
Abdul: Afrochella embodies the essence of #BlackExcellence365 because we are five young men who grew up in Ghana or the US and didn’t want to take “no you can’t do this” as an answer. We started something that was just an idea and now it is a full-time business. We had an idea to showcase and highlight our Ghanaian(African) culture to the world. We use our new found platform
To encourage young black professionals(like ourselves) to invest in Africa and the talent on the continent
Draw attention to various charity initiatives existing in Ghana
Develop information sessions called #AfrochellaTalks to reinforce our pillars and ensure we are educating our audiences on the possibilities in Music, Fashion, Food, Business and Art within Africa.
What is something you would like people to take away from Afrochella?
Abdul: More so than anything - we would like for our attendees to see their visit to Ghana/Africa to be an introduction to possibilities for themselves. If Afrochella is possible, then there are several opportunities in different industries available to the diaspora as long as they are willing to invest in the talent and people on the continent.
Edward: One thing I would like everyone to take away from Afrochella is the experience. We want your life to change in that 8-12 hours. “WOW this is Africa and this is the Africa they don’t show mainstream”.
Thank you to the Afrochella team for sharing and for this incredible event! If you’re interested, check out their Tumblr page, @afrochella for all of the updates and content.
This interview has been condensed for clarity.
