This model is the 2.0L Diesel variant with the sport pack. This engine will get you from 0-60 in 10 seconds and all the way to a top speed of 121mph which is plenty for UK roads. You may not be looking for speed but that slow 0-60 is quite noticeable. The turbo makes it safe to pull away but that engine certainly is lacking the grunt which you experience in the 1 Series. On the road it drives very similar to a standard car. It doesn’t lurch about or pitch side to side like a Land Rover. Which makes it more confident to drive and drive fast. On smooth roads the cabin noise is very minimal even over the Diesel burble and on rough roads it is not a back breaking drive. Being a taller male, I couldn’t raise my seat high due to the low roof, which made seeing the corners a bit difficult but the parking sensors helped keep me on track.

Unlike Audi or Mercedes, BMW aren’t renowned for the quality of their interiors. Don’t mistake my words here, the build quality is superb. Everything is solid and extremely well put together but is it a place I want to spend a long journey in, probably not. This is probably the nicest interior specs I have seen on a non-M Sport car. The seats are well bolstered and hold you secure and are finished with a tasteful red stich and insert. The doors feature the same red stitch and piano gloss inserts which I prefer over the brushed steel or the faux carbon print. Something a bit different.

For a real-world test, we used a 64L plastic tub to represent a good-sized shopping trip. As you can see from the photos, there is more than ample space to get your weekly shopping in. Even the back bench can happily take two crates making this small off roader extremely sensible and useable. This being a smaller off roader it does lack some internal space, especially behind the driver’s seat. Being 6ft 3, I could sit behind the driver’s seat but it wouldn’t work on a long journey. Compared to other German manufactures the missing screen for vehicle data is a disappointment and the button overload isn’t a great compromise.

This is the new Razer Blade Stealth 13, and I know what you might be thinking to yourselves: Didn’t you just review this about a month ago? That is true, but this is a different model. It’s the base one that comes with the 25W version of Intel’s amazing Ice Lake CPU, specifically the Core i7-1065G7. I was actually kidding about that amazing part by the way, because it’s pretty terrible and the naming scheme is trash.
Specs & Price
Now if you recall reading my article on the Blade Stealth with the GTX 1650 Max-Q graphics card, one of my biggest concerns with that notebook was that Razer was using a 15W version of the Ice Lake processor, which significantly affected its CPU performance. Under a full multi-core load it only reached 2GHz and that also affected gaming performance. Ever since then I’ve been waiting to get my hands on this notebook with the 25W CPU chip to see what kind of performance improvements we can we expect. In fact, is it going to be better than the top tier spec GTX 1650 Max-Q model that costs $300 USD more? Let’s find out.
Alright, so first step I do want to quickly go over the spec differences between this base model and the top tier GTX 1650 Max-Q model. The CPUs are the exact same except for their TDP, the memory remains the same 16GB running at DDR4-3733. Unfortunately SSD storage is cut in half, and Razer does not have an option to upgrade within their site, although it is user upgradable. This Mercury White model does not come with a discrete graphics card and it’s priced at 1500 USD, which isn’t cheap. But if you compare that to the competition from Dell, HP, or even Acer, it’s actually pretty good.
Build & Design
Now from a physical standpoint there isn’t anything new with this Mercury White model. It still maintains the same footprint as the GTX variant. I’m actually really digging this silver finish, it isn’t pure white like the XPS 13 2-in-1 that we checked out recently. It’s matte and interestingly enough it doesn’t show finger pins as bad as the black model.
The key caps are white and I’m still debating whether or not it goes along with the silver chassis. When you’re in a dark room the lighter finish does reflect the colors exhibited by the display and it looks gorgeous. It’s certainly photogenic if you ask me. The keys themselves are okay, they’re not the best in the market right now. I think the Lenovo X1 Carbon takes the crown with that, because it’s got solid feedback when you’re typing on it. I really hope Razer improves the keyboard on their next-gen Stealth notebooks cause it’s the same exact setup that’s found on my higher-end Blade 15 notebook.
The trackpad is one of the best on a Windows-based notebook, and it obviously features Windows Position drivers. I’m surprised at the size of the trackpad, because for a 13-inch notebook it is pretty big, especially when compared to the Dell XPS 13 and even the HP Spectre x360.
Ports & Internals
The I/O remains the same as the GTX 1650 model, so you get two USB Type-A ports, two USB Type-C ports that are also Thunderbolt 3 compatible, and an audio jack. The Blade Stealth 13 comes with a 1080P IPS display. I love the fact that it’s a matte screen instead of the glossy screen that you’ll find on other notebooks, thin-and-light notebooks specifically. This will definitely help you when traveling because you don’t have to worry about reflections or whatnot. It’s a very color accurate panel as well. In terms of upgradability, it’s the same layout as the GTX 1650 Max-Q model, so the only thing that you can upgrade is the storage. Unfortunately, the memory is soldered onto the main board. However, if you pay close attention to one area of the main board, you will notice that that’s where the GTX 1650 Max-Q is housed on the top tier spec model. It’s interesting to see that they’re still using the same layout. Thankfully though now you have two fans just cooling that Ice Lake CPU, which is probably why they decided to go with that 25W version cause they have that thermal headroom.
Battery Life
The battery life on this base model is good, but not great, especially when compared to the GTX 1650 Max-Q model. As you can see it only lasts maybe 10-15 minutes longer than the top tier spec model, which actually goes to show how efficient NVIDIA’s Optimus technology is with that GTX 1650 graphics card.
Benchmarks
And now the moment that you all been waiting for, how does this 25W Core i7-1065G7 compare to its 15W sibling? Well the numbers do make a lot more sense now. Taking a look at Cinebench R15, there is a 30% improvement in the multi-core test, but the XPS 13 2-in-1 still remains the fastest in this test. Single core performance didn’t really improve by all that much, and that makes sense since these notebooks didn’t have an issue running at 3.5GHz to 3.9GHz. However, the Whiskey Lake Core i7-8565U on the older model was the fastest. Switching over to Cinebench R20 the story changes completely, the 25W Ice Lake CPU on this Blade Stealth dominates this test, it’s 40% faster than the GTX model.
Moving onto some real-world tests, starting with Blender running to BMW benchmark, the Stealth continues to surprise me. It is once again 40% faster than the GTX model and close to 30% faster than the XPS 13 2-in-1 notebook. Unfortunately, running DaVinci Resolve Studio on these notebooks is a little bit of a challenge. We tried rendering the exact same project that we use for all of our benchmarks on the Ice Lake notebooks, but with the notebooks that don’t have a discrete graphics card it just wouldn’t work. I think it’s more of an Intel QuickSync optimization issue given that the test runs fine with the GTX1650 model and the MX150 model and basically other systems that run a discrete graphics card. Therefore, I think maybe Black Magic has to do something optimization. It’s certainly not Razer’s fault, but it’s something to know if you’re planning on running DaVinci Resolve on this notebook… even though I would not recommend it because this is not an editing notebook.
However, I did run Adobe Premiere Pro and I expected it to be slower than the GTX models since it is missing a discrete graphics card after all. This test certainly favors that model, but when you compare it to the XPS 13 this Blade Stealth is 14% faster. Interestingly enough, when you compare this to the Whiskey Lake models featuring the MX150 GPU, it’s relatively close. To wrap things up, we have Corona add-in for 3Ds Max and this Razer Blade shines once again and comes in first. Overall, the 25W version of the Core i7 Ice Lake CPU on this Blade Stealth 13 is certainly the fastest that we’ve tested among other notebooks, and I didn’t expect it to be that fast compared to the XPS 13 2-in1 featuring the exact same CPU with the same TDP.
Temperatures & Gaming Performance
This performance advantage has to do with how well Razer was able to sustain clock speeds on this notebook at 2.8GHz under a full multi-core workload. Now I do want to bring up something important, which is that when you hit this notebook with a full load the clock speeds go up to 3.5-3.7GHz, but temperatures reach 93°C and then it downclocks they to 2.8GHz while maintaining temperatures around 70°C.
Can you actually game on this notebook? Well you can’t really throw anything intensive at it since the Iris Plus graphics are really meant for light gaming loads at 1080P at the lowest possible settings. Titles like Rocket League, CS:GO, and Overwatch run pretty well and it’s a significant improvement over the last gen UHD graphics. For some reason 3DMark Cloud Gate refused to run on this notebook. I tried everything I could to diagnose that issue, but I was out of luck.
Conclusion
To conclude this baseline Razer Blade Stealth 13 surpassed my expectations, especially in terms of its CPU performance. It really is one of the fastest that we’ve tested so far, and I really wish that the GTX 1650 model had the exact same configuration. Regrettably that isn’t the case. It’s really weird to have two different versions of the same processor on both these notebooks. And it’s kind of ironic because you’re spending $300 more to get that GTX 1650 graphics card but you’re not getting the best CPU performance on that model. Then again, this isn’t a gaming laptop, I think Razer’s really targeting this towards other thin-and-light notebooks and the competition Dell, HP, and Acer. I wouldn’t say that this is a great primary notebook, I think this would be more of a supplementary notebook that would go along with your desktop PC. Or if you’re someone just looking for a clean simple laptop that has really good CPU performance, pretty good battery life, and looks like a MacBook pro, then why not? I think the price is pretty justifiable, although I am pretty bummed about the fact that Razer doesn’t give you the option to upgrade storage on their site.
Now having said all of that, I want to invite someone who might actually consider switching to this Blade notebook from his Lenovo X1 Carbon… or not, I don’t know if that’s going to happen. However, I’m gonna invite Mike over because he has some thoughts about this laptop.
Mike: So I was never a Lenovo ThinkPad user. I always used the Sony Viao’s, but after the last year of using the X1 Carbon I absolutely love this thing. Would I switch to the Razer? There’s a couple of benefits going in the Razer’s favor. First of all, this screen is so much better than the one I have right now on my X1 Carbon. In addition to that, the form factor is a little bit smaller. The keyboard is nowhere near as good as the X1 Carbon, and at the same time I’m really not a big fan of the white keyboard. Now from a performance standpoint I actually prefer the Razer device. The reason for that I want to have something that’s a little bit more adaptable, because if I want to play CIV or something like that at the airport this is capable of it, whereas the X1 Carbon completely shits the bed. However, as somebody who has a high powered desktop and just want something that’s portable with good battery life would I even think about getting this? It would be on my list, but I would still go towards the X1 Carbon just for all of its benefits.

BMW M2 X35i SUV Review: The 2002 tii Reimagined for Modern Times
The BMW X2 M35i is a wicked-fast small SUV that retains a measure of practicality — meaning room for four not-overweight people, and their clothing tightly packed in soft-sided luggage. The X2 M exists for the swooping, twisty roads of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and similar back roads across America and Canada. Even if it’s an SUV coupe, this vehicle is what BMW’s famous 2002 tii would be half a century later, allowing for changes in norms and for how well a good SUV can handle.
The X2 M is also a simple vehicle to understand: 0-60 in less than five seconds, 35 mpg at 65 mph, a punishing ride with the stock suspension, eight grand more than the X2 without the M parts. Other than blind spot detection being unavailable, the tech and driver assists are reasonably good. Nothing else significant is wrong.
Nobody needs this car, but if you can swing $50K-$55K, you’re in for a treat.
On the Road: Fast, Fun, Bouncy
This review applies to both the 2019 and 2020 models; the X2 M was introduced in the first half of 2019. The X2 M35i is a positive delight to drive. The engine is throaty and there’s a satisfying blip when it upshifts under heavy throttle. Almost no one argues with the comfort of BMW seats. The Magma Red leather upholstery makes up for decades of unimaginative beige-or-black BMW seating choices. Mine had power-adjustable side bolsters for the track and twisty side roads.
On recently paved interstates, the car was fabulously comfortable; in states that don’t pay attention to highway infrastructure (this means you, Pennsylvania), it was mile after mile of punishing jolts. My test car was well-optioned but lacked the adaptive suspension option ($500) that could only have softened the ride. The X2 M falls into the list of cars where you must bring your partner or spouse along on the test drive. The stiff ride is the price you pay for a rigid body and suspension that is responsive to the road. The brakes on my test car were grabby at low speed; other testers on other cars have mentioned the same issue. There are no complaints about high-speed braking.
The X2 M with the 2.0-liter turbo-four engine has what reviewers often call “barely noticeable turbo lag.” Translation: There’s noticeable turbo lag at low rpm if you want to get a quick start from a standing stop. It feels like the better part of a second. It’s not there if you’re tooling along in a lower gear at higher rpm because the turbo is already engaged. Zero-to-60 acceleration takes 6-7 seconds if you tromp the throttle. If you want the 4.7 seconds BMW cites in the specs, see Launch Control on page 129 of the manual: Get the engine warmed up (20 minutes), press the DSC button, move the driving style button to Sport, foot on the brake, other foot pushing all the way down on throttle, lift off the brake, and watch the car rocket off with no wheelspin. Microprocessors control the standing-still rpm and launch to ensure against over-revving the engine.
The snug, bolstered front seats prefer people of normal size. The second row has an adequate fit and the roof slopes less than in the bigger X4 and X6. Interestingly, passenger roominess is about the same among the X1, X2, and X3 except the X3 has 1-2 more inches headroom than the X2. The luggage area will hold enough soft-side luggage for four if no more than one is a clothes-horse. Especially if you remove the modesty cover and pile luggage to the ceiling.
There is very little road noise. The premium Harman Kardon audio is quite good. There’s one USB jack in the center stack, one in the console, and two in back. All but the front jack are the newer USB-C. The X2 M continues the BMW tradition of charging a yearly subscription for the right to use an Apple iPhone and not supporting Android phones. Switching between CarPlay and BMW infotainment can be clumsy; non-BMWs have similar issues. Telematics is integrated and Mayday calling services are free for 10 years.
It’s a BMW, so the X2 has the iDrive controller. The same setup that was annoying in the X7 works better in the X2 because your line of sight isn’t blocked by the X2 shifter and you can see the buttons surrounding the control wheel. It’s still hard to see some of the backlit dashboard buttons; the universal dimmer makes some parts too dark and others too bright. The optional head-up display can be adjusted independently.
At 172 inches long, the X2 is firmly in subcompact territory. It fits well in snug urban parking spaces and you’ll probably want the $200 parking assistant option. Adaptive cruise control is stop-and-go. Lane departure is standard but warning-0nly, not lane keep assist and not the lane-centering assist that is part of BMW’s semi-autonomous Active Driving Assistant Pro system. BMW does not offer blind-spot detection on this X2; it should. It does have the basic optical driver safety assists: forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, and auto-braking separate from adaptive cruise control.
The X2 M is not a hybrid drive car but there is brake-energy regeneration to the battery, which powers the car’s electrically powered accessories. I averaged 32 mph in mostly highway driving, and for the span of 100 miles driven at 60-65 mph, I got 36 mpg.
The X2 M35i measures 172 inches long, 72 inches wide, 60 inches high. The X1 is 3 inches longer and higher but passenger space is no greater. The compact X3 is 13 inches longer with similar legroom and more headroom.
What Exactly Is an X2 M35i?
BMW’s naming scheme is precise and sometimes wordy. Vehicles run from 1 Series to 8 Series for sedans (even numbers) and coupes (odd numbers), small to large. SUVs run from X1 to (so far) X7, with SUV couples getting the even numbers. M means a performance version (Motorsport). The two digits years ago signified how many liters displacement (in tenths); now it includes a rough multiplier for turbocharging, so 35 means the 2.0-liter turbo’s 302 hp is about what you’d expect from a 3.5-liter six with no turbo. i is for fuel injection, which all BMWs are, except diesels (no longer sold here) that end in d.

Meet the New 2002 tii: X2 M35i (Not the M2 Coupe)
I drove the X2 from New Jersey to Greenville-Spartanburg, SC, where BMW builds most of the world’s SUVs and where 1,300 BMW Car Club of America enthusiasts gathered last week for the club’s 50th annual Oktoberfest convention to celebrate their cars, drive in road rallies and at BMW’s Performance Center by day, and then drink Oktoberfest beer by night. Many of them have gravitated toward the brand’s roadsters, convertibles, and performance offerings. The same events happen with Corvette, Porsche, Mazda, and Mustang owners in different locales each year as well, and the members are enthusiastic brand-recommenders to friends and relatives. Automakers get good ROI supporting their events and showing off their latest to their fans (photo below).

In 1968, BMW landed on the map when Ziff-Davis’ Car and Driver magazine — the same company as publishes ExtremeTech today — reviewed the BMW 2002, which begat the 2002 tii. Headlined “Turn Your Hymnals to 2002,” the appreciation by Editor David E. Davis was a booster rocket for BMW visibility and sales on American shores. While companies are beginning to doubt the 2019 value of pay-to-play social media influencers, there is seldom doubt that an enthusiastic and impartial editor can be priceless in pointing out what to buy and what to avoid when the product but not the writer is for sale. Davis warned drivers of other sporty cars they were about to be blown in the weeds, and this was about the pre-tii 2002:

In the suburbs, Biff Everykid and Kevin Acne and Marvin Sweatsock will press their fathers to buy HO Firebirds with tachometers mounted out near the horizon somewhere and enough power to light the city of Seattle, totally indifferent to the fact that they could fit more friends into a BMW [2002] in greater comfort and stop better and go around corners better and get about 29 times better gas mileage.
Mr. and Mrs. America will paste a “Support Your Local Police” sticker on the back bumper of their new T-Bird and run Old Glory up the radio antenna and never know that for about 2500 bucks less they could have gotten a car with more leg room, more head room, more luggage space, good brakes, decent tires, independent rear suspension, a glove box finished like the inside of an expensive overcoat and an ashtray that slides out like it was on the end of a butler’s arm—not to mention a lot of other good stuff they didn’t even know they could get on an automobile, like doors that fit and seats that don’t make you tired when you sit in them. So far as I’m concerned, to hell with all of ’em. If they’re content to remain in the automotive dark, let them.
The 2002 tii followed in 1971 and boosted the 2002’s horsepower from 114 hp to 130 using fuel injection over carburetors. Quaint numbers: The X2 M35i is good for 302 hp and 322 pound-feet of torque. Back then, sedans were pretty much all BMW sold, although there were touring versions, European terminology for hatchbacks and station wagons. The 2002/2002 tii was BMW’s clear best-seller then.
Now, the two best-selling models in the BMW lineup are the X3 and X5. X designates SUVs, which BMW calls sports activity vehicles (SAVs) and sports activity coupes (SACs). SUV/SAV/SAC sales climbed to 52 percent of the 311,014 BMW brand sales last year. All except the X1 have M (Motorsport) versions, although the X2 M is not considered quite as Motorsport-ish as the X3 to X6 M vehicles.
Some fanatical owners will argue long, hard, and loud that the M2 Coupe is the logical successor to the 2002 tii. For them, maybe so. At the same time, the X2 M35i will lap a racetrack competitively. It is only 4.5 inches taller than the 2002. The M2 Competition coupe does 0-60 in 4.2 seconds, the X2 M35i does it in 4.7 seconds. Unless you’re on a race track, that is more power than anybody needs for daily driving. There is no on-ramp in America where the M35i can’t reach 60 mph before you have to merge (0-60 takes the length of a football field), even get 10 mph beyond past the speed limit so you can merge ahead of the 18-wheeler that has a convoy of a dozen cars tailgating it in the right-hand lane and paralleling your car. [Sounds like you’re familiar with the New Jersey Turnpike. -Ed]
Here’s one last reason the X2 M beats the M2 Coupe for enthusiasts who drive long distances solo: The X2 M is a mini-motor home. Very mini. Limited amenities. But on long trips, a driver can pull into a safe rest area, drop down one of the two rear seatbacks, roll out a padded mat, and snooze for a couple of hours or overnight with feet in the cargo bed, head on the seatback. (Drivers under six feet will fit with their knees bent slightly.) The cargo cover and tinted side windows provide a measure of privacy. I’ve slept out a torrential rainstorm in the California desert (on high ground) in an Audi TT’s boot (also with folding rear seatbacks) and the Bimmer is spacious by contrast. The X2 M is quick enough, spacious enough, and versatile enough to be the new tii. That’s our take.

X2 Trim Lines
The BMW X1 and X2 are based on a front-drive platform shared with Mini. Factoid: BMW went forward with front-drive only after extensive consumer research and found potential customers already believed BMW was selling front-drive cars.
The X2 M35i, all-wheel-drive only, starts at $46,450 with freight; $8,100 more than the X2 xDrive28i (AWD), in turn $2,000 more than the X2 sDrive28i (front-drive). We’ll say no more about them.
On the X2 M35i, options include Premium Package (head-up display, navigation, heated front seats, $1,400); metallic paint, $595; 20-inch wheels with 245/40R20 performance run-flat tires, $600; leather upholstery, $1,450 plus a mandtory $500 for M sport seats; adaptive cruise control, $950; moonroof, $1,350; Qi wireless charging and Wi-Fi hotspot ($500; telematics and a cellular modem are standard); very good Harman Kardon audio, $875; dynamic damper control, $500; and roof rails, $250. With every options box checked, the price is $55,965.
There are configuration quirks. BMW’s build-your-own site indicates you can get heated seats and heated steering wheel but then you can’t have adaptive cruise control. You can, however, have ACC and heated seats, albeit with no heated steering wheel. If you want the auto-adjusting shocks, you must take the 19-inch wheels with 245/45/R19 all-season tires, probably the better choice for most drivers. You could do this and come out ahead: Get the X2 M with DDC and 19-inch wheels. Order a set of 20-inch alloys (BMW’s or a reputable third-party maker) and the same Pirelli P-Zero summer tires for $3,500-$4,000. Yes, they’re expensive. Sell your essentially new 19-inch wheels and tires to someone who destroyed theirs on a pothole or curb, for $1,000 to $1,250 apiece.
If you have 20-inch wheels and summer performance tires, you’ll need to add a set of winter tires and wheels, $1,600-$2,500, if you live where it gets below 40 degrees. Even if it doesn’t snow, the car loses grip.
Should You Buy?
Nobody needs this vehicle except maybe to cope with a change-of-life crisis (hitting 30, 40, or 50; getting divorced; or laid off with a fabulous buyout package). Or to have fun. It is an absolute hoot to drive. It has enough room for most drivers and passengers. The shape is the best-looking of BMW’s coupe-styled SUVs and doesn’t have the odd-to-some fastback roofline of the X4 and X6.
The X1 carries more cargo, the X3 a lot more. If you’re looking at a non-M X2, maybe you want the X1. Both X1 and X2 come in front- and all-wheel-drive versions but there is no X1 M version. The compact BMW X3 is 13 inches longer (186 inches) and $5,500 more. It’s a toss-up whether the X3 or X5 is BMW’s best SUV. Families of four, or couples who carry lots of gear but don’t want a big vehicle, will find the X3 better suited to their needs. There are M versions of the X3: $71,000 for the X3 M, $78,000 for the X3 M Competition, rated at 4.0 seconds 0-60 mph. Sooner or later, you’re talking serious money.
There is some competition: the Mercedes-Benz GLA, the Volvo XC40, the larger and costlier Porsche Macaan, and the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. Add the Lexus UX and borderline subcompact/compact Cadillac XT4, if ultimate handling matters less than cabin comfort.

What is it?
The X5 was BMW’s first SUV, nee SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle in BMW speak) and it set the tone for models of the type. Genuinely sporty and surprisingly versatile, the X5 has been a favourite for keen drivers and luxury buyers for long. In India too, the X5 has had a good run over the three generations yet. The fourth-gen X5 is out and it marks a slight shift in focus for the model; there’s a greater emphasis on luxury than before. If that’s good news or bad and how the latest X5 fits into the India scheme of things is what we’re going to find out.
What’s it like on the outside?
The new X5 is bigger than you think. Unlike the X3, which looks visually larger than its predecessor, this new ‘G05’ X5, from a distance at least, looks much smaller than the outgoing ‘F15’ X5, despite it being 36mm longer, 19mm taller and a solid 66mm wider. In fact, you might mistake the X5 for an X3 or even an X1, up until the point it pulls up next to you.
This is because of its design, which features sharper lines, tighter skinning and some exaggerated details. The most controversial of these is the enormous chrome-heavy, single-piece kidney grille, which absolutely dominates the front end. From this sprouts a pair of slimmer, more angular headlamps – now with the electric-blue signature of BMW’s Laserlight high-beam system (which gives a throw of 600m) – and, of course, the new-age, C-shaped take on BMW’s LED corona ring DRL signature. The waistline crease flows into a pronounced haunch over the rear wheel, adding some muscle, and this xLine trim looks far more elegant than the M Sport version, which is currently only available with the petrol engine.
Some of us aren’t fans of the way BMW has abandoned the classic L-shaped tail-lamp signature for a more generic, rectangular look, but we like that they’ve stuck with the trademark split tailgate. As for some perspective on just how big this car has gotten, look at the wheels – they have a decent amount of tyre sidewall and don’t look that big, but they’re 20 inches in diameter. A few years ago, this would have been the largest size; now it goes up to 22 inches. And as for the stance, you can go from jacked-up off-roader to hunkered-down M car at the flick of a switch, thanks to the two-axle air suspension new to the X5 (previous cars only had it on the rear axle, so you couldn’t vary the ride height). As ever, you get different-sized front and rear tyres, with the ones at the rear being almost comically wide, with a 305 section – the same as a Lamborghini Huracán!
What’s it like on the inside?
The latest BMW X5’s greater dimensions have, naturally, translated into more interior space. The 42mm increase in the wheelbase to 2,975mm can be easily felt as soon as you slip into the back seat and stretch out, but the even greater sense is of width. The previous X5 was not a narrow car, but in the new one, it feels like there’s a chasm between you and your fellow passenger. It’s a comfortable back seat too, but some might find the backrest a bit too upright, and it’s not adjustable. You can flip it down to free luggage space of course, and if you do, you’ll find the already vast 650-litre space expanding to 1,860 litres, and a really cool motorised luggage cover that whirrs out from its deployed position to under the floor when not needed. What you won’t find anymore are the pair of tiny rear jump seats – they have been left out of the India-spec car this time, likely to differentiate it from the upcoming, three-row X7. What you do get, happily, is a space-saver spare tyre.
Back to the cabin, and more than the outright comfort, it’s the ambience that’s taken a quantum leap. It’s not a stretch to say this xLine variant is approaching 7 Series levels of luxury. Thick bars of dull, unvarnished wood veneer sit on the dashboard, central console and doors, and these are framed in brushed aluminium, which you’ll also find the door handles are fashioned from. The ‘Vernasca’ leather upholstery, available in this cream colour, as well as tan, brown, or black, is wonderfully soft, and there’s even double-stitched leather on the dashboard. The front seats (powered, with a memory function, of course) are big and plush, with a wide array of adjustments, including shoulder support. There are 12 choices of colour combinations for the LED ambient lighting, which even extends to a panoramic sunroof – Sky Lounge, as BMW calls it – and it looks incredible at night.
There are some things that stand out for the wrong reasons in the otherwise high-quality cabin. Those chrome central AC vents, though incredibly well-finished, appear as an uninspired piece of design in this classy BMW cabin. The mode select buttons feel a little flimsy and are tricky to click properly, especially on the move. Then there’s the cut-glass effect on the gear lever, iDrive click-wheel and start button, which has been very polarising. Some find it cool, others find it gaudy, and while on one hand it doesn’t smudge with fingerprints like the standard plastic lever, on the other, in bright sunlight, the reflections off it can hit you right in the eye.
Speaking of points of contention – there’s the new all-digital dial system. While the previous generation of this system (in the 5 Series, for example) mirrored BMW’s classic twin round dials, this new one, which you’ll find on all upcoming Bimmers, adopts a more sci-fi-feeling angular look. This would be fine if it functioned well, but the numbers aren’t as clear to read, the tachometer spins counterclockwise, and when you switch to Sport mode – the tacho needle disappears entirely! Plus, being a screen, they’ve tried to cram it with as much info as possible, which would be helpful, but it’s small and hard to read, which means it’s more distracting to try and find it. The navigation map between the dials, for instance, is monochrome, not full colour, so it blends in rather than standing out. It just seems unintuitive; I wish there was at least the option of returning to the classic dial layout.
We can’t talk tech without mentioning the latest version of BMW’s class-leading iDrive infotainment system, which is presented here on a crisp 12.3-inch touchscreen. Apart from touch, it can be operated by the traditional click-wheel, the touch pad, voice commands and gesture control as well. The tile-based home screen has been replaced with a more tablet-computer-like clustered system, which takes a little getting used to, but ultimately works better at giving you all your vital data at once; and it’s customisable. You also get readouts for real-time power and torque usage, G-force, pitch and yaw angle, and other off-road parameters. There’s also the 360-degree camera with the fun ‘augmented reality’ system that puts a 3D model of the car in a camera-generated depiction of your surroundings. And if you opt for the M Sport trim, you’ll get a head-up display too.
The equipment list on the whole, in fact, is vast and impressive. Apart from what we’ve already discussed already, you’ll find the likes of wireless mobile charging, hands-free parking, four-zone climate control, a 16-speaker Harman Kardon hi-fi, soft-close doors, paddleshifters, adaptive dampers, a powered tailgate with remote opening, auto stop-start, Apple CarPlay (but no Android Auto) and eight airbags. Interestingly, there is only one conventional USB port, but there are three of the new-generation USB-C ports – one at the front, two at the rear – so chances are you’ll have to buy a new cable to make the most of them.
What’s it like to drive?
As we’ve said already, the new X5 is bigger than you think, and while that may apply to its appearance, it isn’t quite as true from behind the wheel, as it was with previous X5s. It’s a trend we’re seeing in most new BMWs – a general ‘softening’ of the driving experience to cater to a wider audience and offer a more luxurious experience, but here, much of the change can be attributed to one mechanical difference – two-axle rear suspension. Previously, X5s only offered air suspension at the rear to aid comfort, but now that it’s at all four wheels, it’s allowed for much more. For one, the ride height can be raised or lowered (in five steps) for varying situations, but the main benefit is a far more luxurious ride. Sure, the massive wheels and tyres can cause a bit of lumpiness over bumps, but overall, the ride is incredibly plush. If you find it too floaty in Comfort mode, switching to Sport gives it a good balance.
Sound insulation, too, is far improved, but again, it’s those big tyres that play spoilsport a bit over expansion joints. The steering has been blunted and softened too, to the point that it is incredibly light at low speeds. It’s almost enough to make you forget this car’s mammoth dimensions; almost.
So it’s great at low speeds, but the contention arises when you’re driving for enjoyment, and here’s where some of the razor-sharp agility of previous X5s is missing. The steering does feel a little mushier, and even in Sport mode there is noticeably more body roll; you really do feel the X5’s size in the corners. But perhaps I’m being a bit harsh because it still handles better than most 2.1-tonne SUVs, with perhaps only a Porsche Cayenne being able to break the laws of physics better. Those massive tyres also afford it prodigious grip, and, despite the AWD, it always has a distinctly rear-biased feel.
Whether you’re barrelling up a mountain road or weaving through traffic, you’ll love the straight-six diesel engine (there’s a straight-six petrol too) and its 8-speed automatic gearbox. With 265hp and 620Nm of torque, it’s got more than enough pulling power to compensate for the X5’s size and weight. It’s not just effortless, it’s downright quick, with 0-100kph coming up in only 6.55sec. And with the quick-acting ZF gearbox (it seems to get better with every new car launched) doing its thing, kickdown acceleration is equally brisk. The good news is the characteristic (and quite thrilling) shove in the guts typical of BMW’s diesel engines is still there. Take it out of Sport mode and – apart from a little bit of hesitation if you catch the gearbox off guard – it is smooth and refined, as is befitting this new, more luxurious X5.
Should I buy one?
The X5 starts at Rs 72.90 lakh (ex-showroom, India). This xLine variant, though, will set you back Rs 82.40 lakh, putting it dangerously close to seven-seat luxury SUVs like the Audi Q7, Volvo XC90 and even the Mercedes-Benz GLS. It stings even more when you realise this isn’t a full CBU import; it’s assembled in India. However, you have to consider a few things, like how much more this car gets you. Not only is it more spacious, it’s more comfortable, thanks to the air suspension, and far better appointed and better equipped now. Then there’s BMW’s updated SU – sorry, SAV – range. The X3 has grown, you also have an X4 now, there will soon be an X7 and below that a new X6; all the models have been moved up the ladder. Sure, it’s not quite the ultimate driving machine that its forebears were, but it’s still pretty damn good to drive – and that can be forgiven for how much better a luxury SUV it is. It’s gotten more expensive, but it’s also a lot more car for the money.

Picture 1 of 19 Image 1 of 19 14 Mar, 2019 5:00pmAlex Ingram We drive the new Lexus UX 250 h from the UK to see if this little crossover can match its premium rivals from BMW and Audi The new car market’s tendency towards SUVs continues to gather pace, and the most recent example comes in the distinctive form of Lexus’s latest launch, the UX. The brand’s compact BMW X1 and Audi Q2 rival looks set to poach sales in the ageing CT hatchback, if not directly replacing it entirely. Lexus states the UX is aimed at”contemporary urban motorists”. As the smallest of the brand’s three SUVs, and equipped with a petrol/electric hybrid system, it seems like a perfect candidate for city driving. But is it worth considering over its more established rivals? • Best small SUVs and crossovers to purchase Picture 2 of 19 Picture 2 of 19 Under the skin, the UX’s hybrid system is made up of 2.0-litre gasoline engine and battery support: front-wheel drive models get an electric motor up front, while’E-Four’ versions add a second to push the rear axle. The result is a maximum system output of 179bhp, and its 8.5-second 0-62mph time puts performance on a par with the 1.5-litre turbo petrol Audi Q2. However, the electric motors make it feel much more sprightly than the Audi within the first few feet – perfect for darting in and out of gaps in traffic. The petrol engine and electric motors have their own torque peaks – 190Nm for the combustion engine, 202Nm for the front E motor and 55Nm the one in the trunk on 4×4 cars – but they do not all arrive simultaneously, so Toyota does not quote a combined figure. As with the huge majority of the Toyota/Lexus hybrid family, drive is transferred to the street through a CVT automatic gearbox. While effective, in the past this has come at the expense of refinement, causing the revs to grow unnaturally and noisily compared to a conventional automatic gearbox. The good news is that this is no longer an issue in the UX. There’s a little drone if you listen hard, but for the most part the combustion engine is so well isolated from the cottage that you don’t really notice. It’s much more refined than the diesel alternatives other manufacturers offer in this course, especially when you consider that, for extended periods of coasting or gentle acceleration, the UX runs in hushed EV mode. It could be even more hushed, were it not for the fact that road noise isn’t particularly well isolated from the cottage. Ride comfort impresses overall, but at lower speeds the UX can jiggle around over smaller bumps. That small fidget is easy enough to forgive however, because the UX makes up for it in other places. All the cars based on the GA-C platform we’ve driven so much feel really engaging to drive, and the UX is no different. It’s more pleasing from behind the wheel than the Q2 – if not quite up to the standards of this BMW X2 – and owns a chassis that feels both secure and adjustable. The steering does not have a huge amount of feel, but the weighing, precision and consistency are spot on. Picture 3 of 19 Picture 3 of 19 Interior design is another area where Lexus traditionally scores highly, and the UX’s modern, simple look is just another hit overall. The only minor gripe is with the row of piano-like switches to the air conditioning system. They’re very similar to what you get in a Peugeot 3008, but not quite as nice to look at or touch. That aside, however, the quality is excellent and the style is unlike anything else in the course. The infotainment system in the UX is another example of where Lexus chooses to go its own way, but probably one where it should really replicate its rivals. The mousepad-like touch interface, though improved, remains frustrating to use. A click wheel, a touchscreen, or both would improve matters significantly. Neither Apple CarPlay or Android Auto are accessible, either. While rear passenger space is acceptable, the boot is tiny. A high floor results in a volume of 320 litres – that’s 150 litres less than a BMW X2. Go for a four-wheel drive version, and the extra rear-mounted motor drops that figure to 283 litres. A Ford Fiesta offers 292 litres. Image 16 of 19 Image 16 of 19 Well, keep to driving around town, and the UX is likely to easily beat conventional combustion-powered competitions; a mid-forties figure in urban environments is entirely plausible. But at a steady 70mph you would be lucky to hit 40mpg, so in the event that you pay higher mileages, a diesel would be a far better option. Company car users will appreciate the 23 percentage Benefit-in-Kind rate, which is three groups lower than the cleanest petrol BMW X2. However, climb up the range and prices soon spiral: the top spec four wheel drive Takumi model prices #40,350. For that, you could get a top spec X2 xDrive20d M Sport X – a car which is quicker and potentially more frugal in the real world – and #1,210 change. 3.5 If you do lots of city driving and a compact SUV appeals to you, then the Lexus UX makes a strong case for itself. It’s easy to drive, rides and handles impressively and its electric-only running for short bursts makes it frugal and refined throughout town. It’s not without its flaws, however: infotainment and practicality lag well behind rivals, and gas consumption at motorway speeds disappoints. Top spec models are extremely pricey, too, so we’d recommend sticking to the lower trim levels. 2019 Lexus UX Release Date, Specs, Price – The latest compact crossover SUV of the Lexus has just been introduced. This is the next 2019 Lexus UX. This model will represent the entry level of the compact crossover range and is placed under the Lexus NX. The 2019 Lexus UX was presented as a conceptual model at the Paris Motor Show and has just made its debut at the Geneva International Motor Show 2018. This model shares the same fundamentals with the Toyota C-HR but will present an aggressive and a cleaner design. In addition, according to the manufacturer of Lexus, with this architecture, the 2019 Lexus UX will have the lowest center of gravity and with its rigid body, will provide exceptional maneuverability and maneuverability.

The first thing the mind asks when looking forward is “LC500” and we really cannot ask why. After all, the grill grid is almost identical without the extra edge on the bottom, and there are even strange corner grooves, albeit a little more extreme. The hood acquires an aggressive and strongly curved tone, while the headlights also mimic the LC500 with a slightly different design and a different LED strip. As an F-Sport model, the example you see here also has the additional front edge in black.
  This lip, by the way, corresponds to the additional wing stretchers on the sides, as well as the side skirts. When you add the mirrors caps and the black roof bars, you have the correct amount of contrast. Meanwhile, the equally familiar body line that moves along the front of the wheel and tilted towards the mirror makes an appearance here, while the other two lines of the body help to facilitate a raked look. Of course, these same body lines combine well with the multi-level body design that makes the overall look aggressive but not too muscular.
  On the back, the overzealous gaze continues, almost to the point that the back is distorting space and time altogether. Seriously, with the way the tail lights are, the lines on the rear bumper and the body lines on the rear hatch, you have to literally take a second look to make sure you do not lose your mind. It’s not that it’s a bad thing, it takes you by surprise. The rear overhang in the rear hatch is decorated with F Sports style side wings, which are a nice touch, while the rear bumper also receives an F Sports insert. It’s hard to imagine the 2019 Lexus UX without the F Sports style, but I hope it’s just as good without all the extra cuts.
  2019 Lexus UX Interior
The 2019 Lexus UX has an interior design that almost seems to mix the best of all worlds. There’s German DNA, Japanese DNA and even American DNA. It is very attractive and still manages to maintain its own identity, not only in the range but also in the market. The infotainment screen has a great look similar to the mobile with an integrated digital display and an integrated appearance, quite similar to the appearance of Audi a few years ago.

  The board has a curvature that gives the driver a feeling of control, while the digital board is striking and functional. There are a lot of buttons on the steering wheel that can be confusing for some and a lot of buttons on the board. The infotainment system is controlled by the touch panel located to the right of the shift lever, while most of the other functions are controlled by the button network mentioned above.
  2019 Lexus UX  Engine Performance
Lexus has worked hard for the UX and has created a new 2.0-liter gasoline engine for the UX 200. According to Lexus, it offers high-speed combustion, multiple direct fuel injection, a variable cooling system and an oil pump, and intelligent synchronization of variable valves. Lexus claims to have a thermal efficiency of approximately 40%, which is apparently an “exceptional number for a passenger car engine”. The change characteristics of this engine are compatible with the first Lexus Direct Shift CVT transmission. It is said to have a direct driving sensation and a more linear acceleration sensation. To express this in terms of normal people, you will not feel the change.
  On the positive side, this transmission is expected to help provide decent fuel efficiency, however, Lexus has not gone into great details about engine efficiency. Delivery 168 horses, which seems a little weak, but not really bad for a vehicle of this size. There are still no torque figures, but it’s hard to imagine anyone wanting to tow with this product anyway, and it certainly is not a performance vehicle. Honestly, Lexus has not revealed much, except that it delivers a projected total of 176 horsepower. This could simply be an improved version of the 2.5-liter NX downtuned, as it offers a total power of 194 horsepower.
  On the other hand, we know that the UX 250H has total traction thanks to an additional electric motor on the rear axle. The transmission is optimized on demand during acceleration, curves and on less than stellar surfaces, and can send up to 80% of the power in the rear, as needed. However, this system is only active at 43 mph, as it is only intended to help stability and not a permanent four-wheel drive system.
  Release date and price
Lexus UX prices have not yet been released, but production will begin this fall and sales will begin in December 2018. Prices will be released closer to the sale date. Currently, the NX is the smallest Lexus crossover, starting at 35,985 for the gasoline model and $ 38,385 for the hybrid model. As such, you can expect the UX to start around $ 30,000 with the hybrid Commander closer to $ 35,000.
