Following on from Bentley’s recent history of setting Ice Speed Records in 2007 and 2011, the W12-powered Continental GT is ready to continue Bentley’s heritage of high performance on ice at the spectacular showcase event in Austria across the weekend of 1/2 February 2020.

The Ice Race Continental GT will be running in livery that pays homage to its record-breaking compatriot from the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in 2019 and shares the same factory built W12 twin-turbocharged TSI engine. The 6.0-litre unit delivers 635 PS (626 bhp), 900 Nm (664 lb.ft.) , a 0-100 km/h time of 3.7 seconds (0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds) and a top speed of 333 km/h (207 mph). The car’s three chamber air springs, 48V active anti-roll control system and iron brakes are entrusted with the cool running of the Bentley Continental GT on the purpose-built ice track. Junior World Rally Championship driver Catie Munnings will take to the wheel of the Bentley Continental GT in Zell am See. The FIA European Rally Championship Ladies Trophy winner will be the first female driver of the modern era to competitively race for Bentley Motorsport.

First Look: The Bentley Ice Race Continental GT

Bentley Motorsport will contest a special Continental GT at the 2020 GP Ice Race in Zell am See. Following on from Bentley’s recent history of setting Ice Speed Records in 2007 and 2011, the W12-powered Continental GT is ready to continue Bentley’s heritage of high performance on ice at the spectacular showcase event in Austria across the weekend of February 1 -2, 2020.

The Ice Race Continental GT will be running in livery that pays homage to its record-breaking compatriot from the Pikes Peak Hill Climb in 2019 & shares the same W12 twin-turbocharged TSI engine. The 6.0-liter unit delivers 635 PS (626 bhp), 900 Nm (664 lb.ft.) , a 0-100 km/h time of 3.7 seconds (0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds) and a top speed of 333 km/h (207 mph). The car’s three chamber air springs, 48V active anti-roll control system and iron brakes are entrusted with the cool running of the Bentley Continental GT on the purpose-built ice track.

Junior World Rally Championship driver Catie Munnings will take to the wheel of the Bentley Continental GT in Zell am See. The FIA European Rally Championship Ladies Trophy winner, former host of the CBeebies television program Catie's Amazing Machines and daughter of former rally driver Chris Munnings will be the first female driver of the modern era to competitively race for Bentley Motorsport. Catie comments:

“The opportunity to race with Bentley at Zell am See is one that I couldn’t miss. I’m completely blown away by the car, and I actually still can’t believe I’m getting let loose in a Bentley to do an ice race. I spent some time on ice in the car just before Christmas. At first I thought it would feel heavy, but I was amazed by how dynamic, nimble and responsive it is. It can dance like a lightweight rally car, and I can’t wait to race it at such an iconic event“

The car has been kept as close to production standard as possible, with minimal changes for safety compliance including a rear roll cage, on-board fire suppression system, racing seats and harnesses. Modifications beyond standard include an increase to the the nominal ride height to give greater ground clearance, arch extensions to accommodate a 15 mm increase in track width, studded Pirelli Scorpion tires, a brace of Lazer high performance lights and a custom exhaust system from Akrapovic, manufacturers of the bespoke exhaust for the Continental GT. The roof will features a bespoke rack, fitted with a pair of Bomber for Bentley Centenary Edition skis.

Consisting of two days of motorsport in unpredictable conditions, the GP Ice Race is the next chapter for Bentley who have a long tradition of testing its cars to the extreme. First run in 1937 and revived last year, the event features an array of historic and modern race and rally cars. The weekend sees drivers compete in various vehicle categories over a 600m frozen racetrack carved from the snow, and involves two tests – standard racing, and an exhibition of skijoring. Skijoring is a competition whereby a skier is towed by a car over a track of snow and ice, and dates back to the Olympic Winter Games 1928 in St. Moritz, when skiers were drawn by riderless horses. Bentley’s 2020 version will feature skier Sven Rauber and considerably more horsepower.

Limited Edition Continental GT to Celebrate Pike’s Peak Record

Bentley has announced details of a striking Continental GT Limited Edition that celebrates a record-breaking automotive achievement from earlier in the British marque’s centenary year.  The run of special coupes is restricted to just 15 examples and honors Bentley’s accomplishment at the demanding International Hill Climb event in the USA in June.

The world’s finest Grand Tourer shaved an impressive 8.4 seconds off the existing record for the 12.42-mile course in Colorado, making it the fastest production car ever at Pikes Peak. Driven by three-time champion, former ‘King of the Mountain’ Rhys Millen, the W12-powered Continental GT climbed almost 5,000 ft through 156 bends in just ten minutes, 18.4 seconds.

The new Limited Edition is distinguished by a carbon fiber body kit and eye-catching Radium by Mulliner paintwork, mirroring the color scheme used on the record-breaking car. Gloss black detailing has also been added to the front lower bumper inserts, roof panel, wing mirrors and rear surfaces.

Acid Green brake disc calipers, Pirelli P Zero Color Edition tires in Radium Finish and a Pikes Peak decal to the front bumper hint at the Limited Edition’s record-breaking lineage, while 22-inch Mulliner Driving Specification wheels in Gloss Black are standard. An optional ‘100’ grille is a reminder that the Continental GT’s impressive hill climb achievement took place in Bentley’s centenary year.

Inside the cabin, Alcantara with contrasting Radium thread stitching adorns much of the soft trim areas, matched with Beluga secondary hide. The steering wheel features a honeycomb stitching design and a center stripe both in Radium, as per the Pikes Peak GT race car. Carbon fiber fascias and wasitrails are complemented by a Piano Black center console, all adding to the sporting theme. The passenger-side fascia features a graphic showing a section of the Pikes Peak track, with five different graphics being used across the 15-car run, along with the record-setting time of 10:18.488.

Pikes Peak embroidery to the seat headrests in Radium stitching, Pikes Peak treadplates and exclusive B&O speaker covers in Black Anodized and Radium finish further enhance the interior appeal. The Continental GT’s luxurious cabin includes the ground-breaking Bentley Rotating Display, deep pile overmats and Front Seat Comfort Specification.

Like the Continental GT that broke the Pikes Peak record earlier this year, this new model features the world’s most advanced 12-cylinder petrol engine in the twin-turbocharged Bentley W12. This mighty engine develops 626 bhp and 900 Nm of torque, effortlessly accelerating the Continental GT from 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds (0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds), with a top speed of 333 km/h (207 mph).

The celebratory model is available to order from December 2019.

  I’ve been to Portland a few times over the years but surprisingly enough, it’s never been to see hometown heroes like Nike or adidas. It’s usually to experience what the Pacific Northwest has to offer both inside and outside the confines of this bustling city. The evolution’s been fierce and just in the last five years, I’ve witnessed Portland turn into a destination for those looking for a sort of duality that very few places can offer.

  And this explains why I was here this time with Bentley, a brand that prides itself on all the luxury and detailing that goes into each and every vehicle that comes out of Crewe and blending that effortlessly with performance numbers that will drive you insane. We talk about it often — this mix between luxury and sport — but there’s aspirational youth in the feeling you get behind the wheel of a Bentley. This also trends right into their SUV, the Bentayga. It takes all these native elements we’ve come to expect from their sedans and GT’s and puts into a beautiful and versatile SUV. It’s more nimble than you’d expect from a full-size SUV and the off-roading capabilities make it the perfect all-season companion. Of course, I’m speaking from experience.

  The British automaker has now introduced the Bentayga V8, a smaller-engine variant to the highly successful SUV and one we had the opportunity to spend a good amount of time with in and around Portland. The main — and what feels like the only — difference between the top-shelf Bentayga and the Bentayga V8 is the power transplant. Bentley’s swapped the 600-hp, 664-lb-ft twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter W-12 engine with a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 which still churns out 542 horses and 568 lb-ft of torque. On paper, the variance is minimal but driving it around the winding roads surrounding Mt. Hood showed just how confident Bentley’s latest offering can be. The handling is tighter and given that it’s shed some pounds and is still mated to the same eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive system you’d find in the W12 variant, the changes in acceleration and responsiveness aren’t even noticeable. What is noticeable is the Bentayga V8’s increased redline to 6,800 RPM and the exhaust note, one that burbles just perfectly right out the V8-specific’s dual twin-tip tailpipes.

  Bentley constantly urges its customers to experience luxury with an unparalleled level of intimacy. From the bespoke options offered to customers when the vehicle’s being built to the eight driving modes you can pick from when driving the Bentayga on- and off-road, there isn’t a moment that isn’t tailored to you. And that’s really special.

  For city dwellers, the Bentayga V8 might actually be the best of all worlds. We get the design and styling of the highly successful Bentayga in a more efficient powertrain that’s probably the better option for horrific stop-and-go traffic we probably won’t be able to escape. The interior refinements and tech updates here are the latest and greatest next to the all-new Continental GT’s.

  The Bentayga V8 isn’t going to be taking away purchases from the top-shelf W-12. Instead, by sticking to their standards and creating a V8 variant that sits at $165K USD, what Bentley has done is made ultra-luxury more accessible.

While the Continental GT3 scored a victory in the debut race of its 2020 campaign, on the other side of the world Bentley’s weekend of racing continued in Zell am See, Austria, where a specially prepared Continental GT competed in the famous GP Ice Race. Driven by Junior World Rally Championship driver Catie Munnings (GBR), and running in a livery that paid homage to its record-breaking compatriot from the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in 2019, the Ice Race Continental GT marked Bentley’s first appearance at the GP Ice Race. Completing several timed runs and  demonstration laps, Munnings deployed the 635 PS (626 bhp) and 900 Nm (664 lb.ft) of torque from the car’s W12 twin-turbocharged TSI engine through Pirelli studded tyres. Following her timed runs, Munnings then teamed up with professional Bomber skier Sven Rauber for a demonstration of skijoring, where a skier it towed at speed behind a car in a tradition dating back to the 1928 Olympic Winter in St. Moritz, when skiers were drawn by riderless horses. The car had been kept as close to production standard as possible, with minimal changes for safety compliance including a rear roll cage, on-board fire suppression system, racing seats and harnesses. CASTELLET BENTLEY GENÈVE ROAD TRIP 2019

Pour la 3ème édition de son Road Trip, Bentley Genève a mis cap sur le sud de la France avec notamment le fameux circuit du Castellet comme étape et l’incontournable village de Bandol comme destination finale.

Le circuit automobile du Castelleta été construit en 1970 sous l'impulsion de Paul Ricard qui fut maire du village de Signes voisin du site et désirait créer un évènement d'ampleur internationale dans la région, avec les conseils de Jean-Pierre Beltoise et quelques autres spécialistes du sport automobile.

 Désigné Premier Centre d'Excellence par l'institut de la FIA pour la sécurité en sport automobile en 2005, homologué par la FIA en 2006, le circuit a rouvert ses portes au public en 2009 et accueille désormais des épreuves de compétition automobile et moto, ainsi que des roulages de clubs et des opérations marketing.

 Après s’être retrouvés autour d’un café chez Bentley Genève le vendredi matin, suivi de la traditionnelle distribution des Roads Books, les participants ont pu profiter du soleil et des superbes routes des Alpes de Provence en direction de Sisteron. Des conditions de conduites idylliques qui ont permis d’exploiter au mieux le potentiel des V8 et W12 présents, dans le respect des limitations de vitesse naturellement.

Première étape gastronomique dans un minuscule village au style tout à fait Provençal, donc de circonstance. L’équipe du restaurant Le Pin D’épices, à Lus-la-Croix-Haute nous a merveilleusement accueilli : une carte simple, du travail de produits frais et régionaux et un joli rosé provençal était tout ce qu’il fallait pour séduire les participants de ce road trip, forcément épicuriens.

Le déjeuner fut suivi par une deuxième session de petites routes de montagnes, entre enchaînements de virages et paysages à couper le souffle. En milieu d’après-midi, nos hôtes au Couvent des Minimes, Relais & Châteaux non loin de Manosque, nous ont superbement reçu. L’alignement parfait de belles anglaises – fromCreweonly ! –  devant l’entrée donnait le ton !

 Après avoir profité des installations du Spa L’Occitane ainsi que de la gastronomie locale, départ le samedi en fin de matinée pour le Circuit du Castellet, où se déroule les célèbres Blancpain GT Series. Mais avant de vivre au plus près de la course, une pause gastronomique et ensoleillée s’imposait au restaurant le San Felice, dirigé par le chef ChristopeBasquié *** et situé directement à côté du circuit.

Après le déjeuner, et accompagnés de l’équipe Bentley Motorsport qui était aux petits soins, il était grand temps de goûter à l’ambiance d’une course d’endurance en plongeant au cœur de la compétition : visite de la grille de départ quelques minutes avant le départ de la course, visite du garage Bentley, visite de la piste et rencontre avec les pilotes étaient au programme.

En effet, une promenade sur la piste nous a immédiatement immergé dans la course, parmi les véhicules et les pilotes, et permis de goûter à l’excitation qui règne parmi les équipes lors des préparations de dernière minute, juste avant la course.

Puis, confortablement installé dans des navettes circulant tout au long de la piste, sur les voies d’assistance, nous avons pu bénéficier d’une vue privilégiée sur le circuit et les véhicules en course. Enfin, et invité dans le garage Bentley M-Sport en pleine action, nous étions témoins privilégiés des coulisses de la course. Apéritif et dîner à l’espace lounge de Bentley nous ont également permis de suivre la course dans des conditions à la hauteur de la marque !

En fin de soirée, direction Bandol pour passer la nuit à l’hôtel l’Ile Rousse*****, offrant des installations de thalassothérapie aussi superbes que sa vue sur la mer, afin de célébrer la victoire de l’écurie Bentley lors de cette course riche en rebondissement, avant de reprendre la route pour Genève le dimanche.
