Audi A7 Essential History

If German naming conventions have you all twisted-up, understanding the Audi A7 is simple. Think of the A7 simply as a more elegant, stylish Audi A6, incorporating most (if not all) the A6's powertrain options and interior design. Make sense? We hope so, considering you've had eight model years to figure the A7 out. Launched globally in late 2010, Audi's swoopiest four-door didn't make it to the States until the 2012 model year, filling a Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class-sized gap in the automaker's lineup.

Initially, Audi's ubiquitous 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 served as the only source of motivation, with 310 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque routed to the Quattro all-wheel-drive system via an eight-speed automatic transmission. Soon after, the nerd-tastic 3.0-liter turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel V-6 hit our shores, now offering 240 hp and a thick 428 lb-ft of torque through the same eight-speed automatic.

With a 0-60-mph run tested somewhere in the low five-second range and a top speed of 155 mph, the bog-standard A7 was hardly a slug, but the later S7 added an extra dollop of speed and performance onto the platform. As the A7 is to the A6, the S7 is essentially a rebodied S6 of the same generation, incorporating the S6's excellent 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 and slick seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. A total of 420 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque are on tap, returning a 0-60-mph run in 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. Model year 2016 saw updates across the board, with the A7 upgraded to 333 hp and the S7 to 450 hp. Along with extra power, the S7 also added upgraded suspension, brakes, tires, wheels, and interior components over the regular A7.

Still not enough? The mighty RS7 is one of the most potent of all Audi four-doors, boosting the S7's 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 to 560 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The RS7's 0-60-mph dash takes just 3.7 seconds, while upgraded brakes—and optional carbon ceramics—and revisions to both chassis and aero improve braking and handling. Finally, for the truly power-mad (and wealthy), Audi's 2017 updates brought the debut of the RS7 Performance model, rated for 605 hp and 553 lb-ft and capable of 0-60-mph times in the low three-second range.

Second-Generation Audi A7

The second generation of A7 arrived for the 2019 model year, and landed with the newest variant of Volkswagen/Audi's MLBevo platform, a new turbocharged V-6 engine, and a 48-volt mild hybrid system. Stick with the A7, and you'll get a 3.0-liter that puts out 335 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque through all four wheels and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The 0-60-mph dash takes 5.2 seconds, and top speed is limited to 130 mph.

By now, you should know how this goes. The second-gen S7 wasn't long behind the new A7, upping the ante with the 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6 pulled from the current RS5. This means 444 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed automatic, cutting the 0-60-mph sprint time to 4.5 seconds, but keeping the top speed limited to 155 mph. Scarier still is the new RS7, packing an updated 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 with 591 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque that allows for a 0-60-mph scuttle in 3.5 seconds. Not convinced? The effortlessly handsome Audi A7 wasn't the first fastback sedan, but it was one of the cars that established the segment alongside the groundbreaking Mercedes-Benz CLS, and the A7 remains a staple of Audi's lineup. The A7—and subsequent high-performance variants—aren't at the top of the Audi dogpile in either price or size, but the A7 family possesses some of the strongest aspirational pull and consumer recognition. For many, the RS7 is about as good as a modern four-door can get, both aesthetically and dynamically, and we can't say there isn't a kernel of truth in this. Better yet, even if you don't make the jump to the S7 or RS7, the regular bog-standard A7 is still one of the most luxurious and beautifully packaged vehicles on sale today.

Audi A7 Buying Tips

Figuring out which member of the A7 family to buy breaks down to what you want out of your style-forward German luxury car. If you're in the market for a reliable, trouble-free daily driver, go with a new A/S/RS7; there's little point pumping endless dollars into a second-hand A7 unless you're already a die-hard Audi enthusiast.

If you're OK with driving a used S7 or RS7 as a second or third car for long distance trips or medium-distance use around town, look for a strong maintenance record. If you can't find a good one or maybe can't afford one of the cleaner ones, we say keep walking—this is a case of pay now or pay big later.

When you do find a nice pre-owned example, have it checked out by a local Audi dealer or independent specialist to make sure there isn't anything insidious hiding under those sumptuous bodylines. If there are issues, you shouldn't have any trouble finding parts, however expensive they may be; Audi still provides factory support for A7s both old and new.

Will time show that 2019 was the year the electric car broke through? There’s certainly been no shortage of new products using battery power, from the Porsche Taycan and latest Nissan Leaf to the impossible-to-ignore Tesla Cybertruck.

Combine these new cars with an improving charging infrastructure and you’d expect the tide of public opinion might start showing signs of softening towards EVs. That was certainly the case according to our own research, which revealed that the number of consumers who consider themselves as likely to own an EV in the next five years jumped to 26% in 2019, up from 15% in 2018. This is most likely just the start, too: Who would bet against that number having grown significantly by this time next year?

Back in the world of internal combustion, my honorable mention for 2019 must go to the latest generation of Porsche 911, the 992. Not only does it masterfully update the legendary 911 format for this hi-tech age with its fabulous interior and ultra-sleek exterior, but in terms of performance, the 992 moves even the basic, non-GT or Turbo models firmly into supercar territory. In fact, if I had to narrow down my automotive highlights of 2019 into just one, fleeting moment, it’d be the surreal three-point-something seconds it took our four-wheel drive, PDK-equipped 911 test car to fire from 0-62 mph.

I’m struck by the number of performance wagons and SUVs we saw introduced in 2019. Fans of the Audi S4 Avant rejoiced when the German automaker revealed it was bringing its RS 6 Avant to North America. In our yearly Truck Sentiment Survey, we found that 70% of shoppers were willing to switch brands, which is good news for these startup truckmakers. However, their high prices may keep shoppers away.

With one colleague celebrating electric vehicles and another performance wagons and SUVs, I feel obliged to mention one 2019 highlight they didn’t: Ford’s live-streamed debut of the 2021 Mustang Mach-E just before the LA Auto Show. Ford’s decision to put the name and badge of its mighty Mustang on an electric crossover generated controversy, of course, but a pony-equipped vehicle with up to 300 miles of range, usable seating for 5, almost 60 cubic feet of cargo room, and a 0-to-60 time of less than 4 seconds sounds great to me.

But my 2019 highlights came from two automakers CarGurus has found compelling for years, Mazda and Subaru, in the form of strong new versions of proven models. The redesigned 2019 Mazda3 earned rave reviews from almost everyone who drove it, including George Kennedy, and the updated 2019 CX-5, which we sampled in the snow at the end of last year, also earned praise from a wide variety of reviewers.

A new version of our favorite Subaru model also arrived in 2019. We got a chance to drive the 2020 Subaru Outback back in September and enjoyed it quite a bit. The new edition of this wagon/crossover finally offers a turbocharged engine under its hood, which drivers living at high altitudes should particularly appreciate. Our recently published review of the 2020 Outback found it strong from functionality and cost-effectiveness standpoints, which we consider hallmarks of the Subaru brand.

This time of year, everyone’s talking about electrification and progress and the hot new thing. But as anyone with their eyes open can clearly see, 2019 was the year of the throwback.

First, Chevy resurrected the Blazer as a stylish, sharp, and sexy crossover complete with nearly $1,400 worth of 21-inch tires. Sure, the new 2019 Blazer had its detractors, namely those bemoaning its lack of off-road performance, but I, for one, welcome our new crossover overlords.

Sure, the 2020 GR Supra’s interior might feel a bit familiar, and the lack of a manual transmission will cut it off some enthusiasts’ shopping lists, but it’s safe to say that no other car on CarGurus’ 2019 test-drive review roster received as much attention at gas stations, grocery stores, race tracks, or anywhere else we drove it.

Four-wheel steering is also available as an option. Powertrain discussions will have to wait for another day, because Audi is releasing Europe-only details for the time being. They'll get a couple diesel engines to begin, followed by a gasoline engine and a plug-in hybrid powertrain. We'll expect to see the latter two here. All of the engines will be mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Audi's 48-volt mild-hybrid electrical system will be in play for these powertrains, too. Power figures aren't available for any of the options, but we'll be looking out for U.S. specific engine details anyway. Audi says the new Q7 will be launching in Europe in mid-September this year. We'll expect the big SUV to arrive in U.S. dealers not long after that, possibly in time for the holiday season. We don't expect to see any massive price changes to arrive alongside this update, either. The Q7 with the 2.0-liter turbo starts at $54,545, including the $995 destination charge. To kick off the New York International Auto Show, the World Car Finals will take place on April 17, kicking off the week-long event in style.

The finalists for this prestigious award have been announced, with the Jaguar I-PACE leading the way. The all-electric Jaguar is up for World Car of the Year, World Green Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year.

Each category features three cars vying for the top prize. The Jaguar is joined by the Suzuki Jimny and the Audi e-tron as the only cars to be up for multiple awards.

The New York International Auto Show, which will take place in the Javits Center from April 19 to 28, will feature thousands of cars. The journey to become a finalist in this competition, though, took quite some time.

The Road to World Car, as the group calls it, is a yearly journey that follows more than 80 journalists from across the globe. The nonprofit group test drives vehicles of all manufacturers prior to voting for the most prestious ones of all. It includes journalists from Asia, Europe and North America, with a goal of complementing, but doesn’t want to “compete with existing national and regional COTY awards, which are inherently different in scope.”

This competition is different from the regional ones, the body says, because of its choice of vehicles. Many of the finalists are not available in specific regions, making this award one of the top in the world for auto makers.

The Road to World Car began on Oct. 2, 2018 in Paris, culminating with the New York City finale in April.

Among the top luxury cars nominated for the top prize are the Audi A7 and Q8, along with the BMW 8 Series. Each of the Audi machines have a slick, luxury look to their exteriors. Both include a V6 engine and can go from zero to 60 mph. in less than six seconds.

“The all-new A7 offers the best of three worlds—the spaciousness of a sedan and versatility of a sportback, with the emotional design of a coupe,” an Audi statement said. “A minimal use of chrome on the exterior allows the A7’s distinctive body proportions to stand out.”

Overall, Audi has placed three of its vehicles in this year’s top ranking. The e-tron is up for World Car of the Year and the World Green Car of the Year, a combination that the I-PACE has also achieved.

But it’s the Jaguar I-PACE that’s been making the most noise in 2019.

“It’s an all-electric vehicle that’s absolutely gorgeous,” Tony Anton, general manager of Jaguar Freeport, said. “The battery is actually located on the floor of the car, giving the center of gravity of the car so low that it’s the most stable car I’ve ever driven in my life.”
