Common Problems With the Alfa Romeo Giulia: A Comprehensive Analysis
The Alfa Romeo Giulia, known for its stunning design and exhilarating driving experience, has gained popularity in the world of luxury sedans. However, like any vehicle, it is not without its share of common problems.
In this article, we will delve into the most frequently reported issues with the Alfa Romeo Giulia, exploring both mechanical and electrical concerns. By understanding these problems, potential owners can make informed decisions and take necessary precautions.
Electrical Problems
One of the most notorious issues plaguing the Alfa Romeo Giulia is related to its electrical system. Many owners have reported a series of common faults that lead to various problems. For instance, some Giulia owners have experienced sudden shutdowns of their vehicles, with no warning signs or ability to restart. Additionally, multiple warning lights have been known to illuminate simultaneously, even when no mechanical failures are present. Battery draining, malfunctions in the stop-start system, and problems with corroded or leaking batteries have also been reported.
Engine Misfires
Another common problem encountered by Alfa Romeo Giulia owners is engine misfires. Specifically, models from 2017 and 2018 were subject to a recall due to this issue. The misfires in the 2.0-liter turbocharged models could lead to severe consequences if left unchecked. Catalytic converters may overheat, causing damage to the engine wiring and resulting in additional electrical faults. In extreme cases, engine fires and failing exhaust systems could occur.
Anti-Lock Brake Failure
Brake issues are a cause for concern in any car, and unfortunately, the Alfa Romeo Giulia is not exempt. One of the common problems with this vehicle involves failures of the anti-lock braking system (ABS). In certain 2020 and 2021 Giulia models, hard braking could cause the hydraulic control unit of the ABS system to separate. This leads to reduced braking power and a complete loss of anti-lock braking functionality, posing serious safety risks. To address this issue, a recall was issued, allowing affected Alfa Romeo Giulia owners to have their hydraulic control unit replaced at no cost.
Failing Rear Brake Discs
In addition to the ABS failure, another brake-related concern affects 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia models. The rear brake discs in these vehicles have been prone to breaking apart, resulting in a sudden and complete loss of braking power. This issue prompted a recall, ensuring that affected models receive free brake rotor and pad replacements, mitigating the risk of accidents.
Fuel Leaks and Fire Risk
Fuel leaks are always a serious concern, as they can lead to vehicle fires. In the case of the Alfa Romeo Giulia, certain 2020 and 2021 models experienced this problem due to a crack in the fuel line sensor housing. The crack allowed fuel to leak from the fuel lines, significantly increasing the risk of fire. As a result, Alfa Romeo offered free repairs to all affected Giulia owners, addressing the issue and ensuring their safety.
Other Common Alfa Romeo Giulia Problems
While the aforementioned issues are the most commonly reported, there are several other concerns that Alfa Romeo Giulia owners have encountered. For example, 2017 and 2018 Giulia models have frequently experienced contaminated and leaking brake fluid. Another prevalent issue among Giulia models from 2017 to 2019 is the inability to disable the adaptive cruise control system due to faulty brake module software. Furthermore, owners of Giulia models between 2018 and 2019 have reported problems with the fuel gauge, resulting in inaccurate readings and leaving some stranded due to unexpected fuel depletion.
Reliability of the Alfa Romeo Giulia
Given the array of reported problems, one may question the overall reliability of the Alfa Romeo Giulia. While these issues have undoubtedly impacted the perception of the vehicle’s dependability, it is essential to consider the efforts made by Alfa Romeo to address and rectify these problems. J.D. Power, a reputable source for automotive ratings, awarded the Giulia a reliability score of 74 out of 100, placing it in the average range. It is crucial to note that proper maintenance and adherence to recall requirements are vital in ensuring the longevity and reliability of any vehicle, including the Alfa Romeo Giulia.

The Resilient Roadster: Why the Miata continues to reign for over 30 years.
The Mazda MX-5, known in the States as the Miata, was first introduced in 1989. Since then, Mazda has blessed us with four generations of the MX-5. I remember the first time I ever began to appreciate this roadster. It was in the late 90’s as a kid playing the video game Gran Turismo. The Miata was one of the first cars you got to choose. It wasn’t flashy, but it was cool that it was in one of the most prestigious video games at the time. Fast forward over 20 years later and the Miata continues to be the best affordable sports car on the market.
I must admit, during my entire life I never thought about owning a Miata. It’s tiny, it’s not that fast and most of their owners are going through a mid life crisis. I found myself always desiring something practical yet fun to drive. The Miata is defined by the latter, however it is far from practical. I never had money to blow on a weekend driver; two seater sports car. So I always resorted to purchasing Sport Utility Vehicles, or four door sport sedans. After I sold my Acura TL type S, I was in desperate need of a vehicle. I visited an Alfa Romeo dealer with my heart set on purchasing a Giulia. I’ve always wanted an Alfa Romeo ever since I was a kid. My dad owned a late 80’s Alfa Romeo Milano and that was the family car throughout my childhood. When my dad drove by, I would brag to my friends that the Alfa would one day be mine. They would all laugh and clown on me because it was old and weird looking. But I loved it because it was Italian and different. I guess I felt like it represented me welI. I love having things that nobody knows about. Since I was a kid I always had to buy Nike’s that no one in school had. I mean it would seriously ruin my day if I saw someone else wearing my sneakers. I didn’t care if someone else liked what I had. I just preferred to stand out and I’ve carried that mentality into my adulthood. As far as the Alfa Romeo goes, I never got a chance to call it my own. My dad sold it to his mechanic a few years before I got my license. Bummer.
Back at the dealership, I couldn’t score a decent deal on a Giulia. Instead, I noticed an automatic Fiat 124 Spider Abarth. I remember when the 124 Abarth came out, it was only offered with a manual transmission. Rightfully so, a car like that should only be offered with a standard 6 speed. However, I didn’t want my daily driver to have a manual gearbox. At the time I lived in Los Angeles, and I’m sure you all heard about LA’s traffic. So a stick shift wasn’t going to cut it in bumper to bumper. So here I am in front of the next best thing, an Italian sports car with a scorpion for a badge. It checked all the right boxes. It was different, sporty, fun, and most importantly Italian. It could fill that void of always wanting to own a unique, Italian automobile. But there was a problem, it wasn’t practical. I’ve never owned a two seater sports car with enough cargo capacity to squeeze in my toiletry bag. So I passed on the Spider and ended up leasing a crossover; how original. Recently, I had the luxury of temporarily owning both the 124 Abarth and Mazda Miata. After driving both cars for a few weeks, I could definitively say the Miata is the better sports car. Although I’ve grown to be biased towards Italian manufacturing, I must admit the Japanese roadster is without question the better option.
The Miata featured in this article is a 2019 base model with 181 horsepower, an increase from 155 in the previous year. The 2.0 naturally aspirated inline 4 engine boasts 151 pound feet of torque with a curb weight less than 2400 pounds. It comes standard with a 6 speed manual gearbox and redlines at 7500 RPM’s. Combine this with the Miata’s fantastic handling and it’s enough to make you feel like you’re in a Formula 1 race car. The naturally aspirated engine makes the throttle feel extremely responsive. The gearbox shifts like butter and urges you to rev it all the way up to its redline. This Miata was by far the most fun I’ve ever had in a modern day roadster. It’s so light that you can just throw it into turns and still trust that it will remain in control. There is nothing in this world that is more fun than going through the gears in this car. The dual overhead cam engine is refined and appeals to many car enthusiasts for its simplistic design. The engine doesn’t have any plastic covers over it, rather it appears to look simple and easily accessible under the hood. This is something that is becoming more and more rare to find in the auto industry. Nowadays, engines come completely covered and require special tools to access. Automakers are discouraging people to work on their own cars. Not Mazda, just look at that engine, it looks like something straight from the past. As clichè as it may sound, Mazda knows if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Unlike Toyota with their Supra, Mazda will never offer their Miata without a standard transmission. They understand that the car is designed to operate with a manual. Going through the gears and hitting the perfect shift is what brings out the fun in a sports car. When BMW introduced the new Z4 last year, it did not offer a manual transmission. Same goes for Porsche with their latest 911. Dedicated fans were appalled when they found out a manual was not an option. BMW and Porsche listened to their supporters and released a manual transmission for both those models. These automakers paid attention to the feedback and understood that there is still a large enough market for manual transmission owners. Now automakers don’t want to make the same mistake. Look at Ford with their new Bronco, they offer a stick shift for the 4 cylinder model with a crawling gear! These stories are a true testament to the value us car enthusiasts bring to the table. Car companies are beginning to listen. Mazda however has been listening for decades and this latest Miata is the perfect example. A new and improved engine, handling that you can trust and of course the buttery smooth 6 speed transmission. Everything you want in a high revving sports car.
Yes it isn’t practical and maybe it shouldn’t be your daily driver. But the Mazda Miata is still around because Mazda continues to put love into manufacturing their beloved roadster. What do I mean by putting love into it? Well think about your mom or grandma’s cooking. You know when they make your favorite comfort food with love. You can tell when you get the same dish at a restaurant and it’s not made with love. Mazda does the same with their Miata. They are consistent and refrain from cutting corners to save money. And if they do find themselves not pleasing their hardcore followers, they make adjustments with the following model. The improvements Mazda continues to make on the Miata is a testament to the roadster’s longevity. It still continues to thrive in an automobile market that finds companies reinventing new crossover SUV’s. Mazda in particular wasn’t satisfied with their lineup of crossovers. The CX-7 was one of the early pioneers of the vehicle class. Now Mazda offers four options, including the new CX-30. Like the CX-3 wasn’t enough, they had to confuse us with a slightly larger CX-30? Mazda could easily shift all their attention towards their SUV lineup and stop focusing on their tiny sports car. The Miata has never been Mazda’s bread and butter or volume vehicle; but it will always define their brand. In a world full of crossovers, props to Mazda for not neglecting their pride and joy, their roadster, the Mazda MX-5.

Chevrolet Blazer vs. Chevrolet Traverse: What’s the Difference?
We’ve tested the Chevrolet Blazer extensively since it was released in 2019. At our SUV of the Year competition, the RS trim impressed us with good road manners and a high-quality interior, but we were disappointed that those traits didn’t extend to the base offering. More recently, we had another go in the Blazer RS, and instead of comparing it to the competition, we thought it best to look within Chevrolet’s own extensive lineup of SUVs to see how it stacks up against the larger but similarly priced 2019 Chevrolet Traverse Premier FWD (front-wheel drive).
The Blazer and Traverse are not direct competitors, and as such, this isn’t a classic MotorTrend comparison test. We typically try to match cars up within their segments. That’s why the Ford Mustang gets matched up with the Chevrolet Camaro, not the Alfa Romeo Giulia. But Chevy recently ditched sedans in the United States, meaning that, like Ford, it’s going to be filling our streets with SUVs of all shapes and sizes for the foreseeable future. As such, you might want to know which sub-$50,000 Bow Tie–badged SUV is right for you.
The Traverse is a pair of Chuck Taylors—easy to live with and use every day but clearly not the best choice for any kind of exercise. By the end, your feet will be calloused, and you’ll sure wish you would have strapped on something more suitable. The Blazer, on the other hand, is a more purpose-built pair of trainers. It’ll easily help you tackle that 5k and won’t leave you rubbing your soles at the end of the day, but its uses are more limited as a result.
Even though they are different, they share one very important commonality: price. The Traverse Premier I tested in January rang in at $47,990. The Blazer RS Chevy gave us totaled $48,170. The Blazer RS is the second-priciest trim you can buy, and this car was optioned up from its base price of $44,595. That means less than $500 separates these two very different vehicles. But which one is best for you? Well, that all depends on how much running you do.
Chevrolet Blazer vs. Traverse: Which has a nicer interior?
The Traverse can get more expensive with different option packs and trim levels, and if your price cap is the nice and round $50,000 figure, then this is very nearly the most Traverse you’re going to get for the money. The same is true for the Blazer. Its price can be pushed north of $50,000, but not by much.
Despite their closeness in price, their interiors are markedly different. Most important, the Traverse has three rows and seating for up to eight (seven in higher trims like this Premier thanks to a pair of captain’s occupying the second row); the Blazer, however, has only two rows and seating for five. The inside of the Traverse is decidedly previous-gen Chevy. Its interior is loaded up with rough plastics, and the climate controls are nothing if not difficult to fathom. The physical controls for everything in the Traverse are all too small for a car with so much interior space to work with, and that’s because entire center stack is shared with smaller cars like the Malibu.
The Blazer, on the other hand, is a properly modern place to sit. The massive Camaro-style air vents stare at you as you drive around, but the climate controls in the Blazer are much easier to get the hang of. They’re laid out in a straight line instead of being bunched up, and that makes it much easier to operate the system without looking down at it. Also, even though controlling the temperature of the air via the vents themselves isn’t necessarily the best way to do it, the trim ring that acts as the temperature control knob is so massive it’s hard to miss.
The gauge clusters in both the Blazer and the Traverse feature customizable displays, but the gauges in the Blazer are sportier and more purposeful. The steering wheel also looks much newer in the Blazer, with a more angular four-spoke design as opposed to the fanned out four-spoke look of the one in the Traverse.
Traverse vs. Blazer: How do they drive?
Those steering wheels control surprisingly dynamic machines on the road. In this case, they’re both powered by 3.6-liter V-6 engines mated to nine-speed automatic transmissions. The Blazer makes 308 hp to the Traverse’s 310, and the Blazer also has a teeny advantage when it comes to torque, edging out the Traverse’s 266 lb-ft with 270 of its own. A front-wheel drive Traverse weighs in at 4,346 pounds—heavier with all-wheel drive. An all-wheel-drive Blazer is just a little bit lighter that its bigger counterpart as 4,274 pounds.
On the road, however, the difference feels like it’s much more than 72 pounds. The Blazer is much easier to control than the Traverse, and that’s all down to the lower weight and the smaller size. Behind the wheel, you feel as though the car will do whatever you tell it to. It’s both more responsive and easier to drive at speed—like on the highway or, dare I say it, on a twisty road you’d take sports cars on. It must be said, however, that even though it’s endowed with sporty looks and a tough demeanor, the Blazer RS is not a car in which you grow horns and drive too quickly when you’re behind the wheel.
The Traverse is a less willing partner on the road, but it’s not entirely unathletic. It has good body control for an SUV of its size. It’s both stable and relatively comfortable at highway speeds, and its ride, while flat and stable, is not punishing. Even though the trim we recently tested only had FWD, it was surprisingly capable for a machine of its size. And size might be the deciding factor between these two SUVs.
Blazer vs. Traverse: What are the differences in size?
The Blazer is a true crossover, and it will only seat five no matter what model you get. The Traverse, on the other hand, can seat up to eight—though higher trims come with captain’s chairs in the second row, for a total of seven seats. The Traverse can also hold significantly more cargo than the Blazer thanks to how much longer it is. With the third row folded down, the Traverse has 98.2 cubic feet of cargo room for you to play with.
The Blazer is smaller, but its cargo bay still has 64.2 cubic feet of space to fill. Its cargo area isn’t exactly tiny, either. It still outclasses other two-row crossovers when it comes to cargo room, including the BMW X3 (62.7), the Jeep Cherokee (54.7), and even the Lexus RX (56.3). There’s more than enough room for suitcases, backpacks, and plenty of sports gear.
Blazer or Traverse—which one should you buy?
So which one is best for you? Well, if you’ve got $50,000 to spend on an SUV and want something from Chevrolet, it mostly depends on how big your family is and how you drive. The size of the average American family is 3.14 people, so if there are five or fewer of you or you enjoy sporty driving, the Blazer is right for you. It’s compact enough to be easy to park, competent on any road, and completely suitable for a family of average size. It’s also handsome enough to lure single people who want something a little more charismatic than a hatchback.
That said, if your family is more than five, the choice is obvious. The Traverse can swallow more people at the expense of being less fun to drive and having a less intuitive instrument panel. Luckily, both are competent crossovers, and there isn’t too much to fault in the case of either one.

<span class="hidden">–</span>Divulgação/Alfa Romeo

<span class="hidden">–</span>Divulgação/Alfa Romeo
Toyota SUV híbrido do Yaris
VW Golf GTI/GTE/GTD e Tiguan reestilizado

<span class="hidden">–</span>Divulgação/Alfa Romeo
