The first was the XT5. I like this SUV, but I’ve always been an Acura fan. So I thought I’d compare the XT5 with the RDX. Obviously, there are some segmentation questions that arise from such a matchup: the RDX covers both the compact and midsize segments, while the XT5 is intended to be Caddy’s midsize warrior (the XT4 covers the compact/subcompact space, and the XT6 handles three-row midsize duties).
The RDX is also priced significantly lower than the XT5. But segmentation is kind of shaggy these days, as some automakers stick with their smaller lineups and others add new vehicles to dice and slice markets.

We didn’t enjoy the combination of a 310-horsepower, 3.6-liter V6 engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission, even when we put it into manual mode and used the paddle shifters behind the steering wheel and pepped up the driving mode. This bugged us. A premium crossover with a decent-size V6 should have been oomphier.

We asked Cadillac to explain. A spokesperson told us that Cadillac’s “engineering’s team was aiming to get the best real-world fuel economy and day-to-day usability for buyers in the market segment,” adding that fuel economy ranks really high in owner surveys.”
This confirmed our theory. We didn’t think there was anything wrong with the engine, but we figured that Caddy had gone for MPGs-18 city/26 highway/21 combined-over performance.
The eight-speed shifts tidily, and the XT5 hauls you from 0-60 mph in a Caddy-claimed 6.6 seconds, and it had a reasonably competent all-wheel-drive system that should be able to handle the worst the suburbs throw at it.

What makes it so effective is that the touchscreen interface is simple and intuitive; both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available; voice commands work well; the navigation is excellent and well-integrated with OnStar; and wireless 4GLTE connectivity means that an entire car full of people can use their devices on the road. We’ve sampled all the premium audio systems on the auto market, and while some are more dynamically interesting than Bose, and some really make you feel as if you’re in a rolling concert hall, Bose Surround Sound will please almost any driver or passenger and can handle any type of music, from heavy metal to New Age, pumping it all blissfully through 14 speakers.
It hits a sweet spot. You just can’t find anything to complain about. That’s why it was our Defence Online Car Audio System of the Year in 2017.

When I reviewed the RDX last year, I swooned. “I’d buy one,” I wrote.
“Seriously, I enjoyed the RDX immensely in the week that I drove it around the Jersey ‘burbs and the mean streets of New York City. But I tend to respond quite favorably to Acuras. For whatever reason, I think they combine a high level of luxury and value with legendary reliability and fun motoring that isn’t too demanding.”
A key differentiator for me between the XT5 and the RDX was the engine. The underpowered V6 on the XT5 that we tested was trumped by the overpowered turbo four on the RDX. The RDX’s power was snappier, and the fuel economy is superior.
The driving dynamics, however, were neck-and-neck. If I had to, I’d give the RDX a slight edge, but around corners, both crossovers are fun to handle.
Acura’s updated infotainment system is a notable improvement over the old setup, but the XT5 has an industry-leading system, so the RDX has a ways to go before it even thinks about knocking off the Caddy on this score.
In terms of interior appointments, the Caddy edges out a victory. But a slight one.
Overall, the Acura RDX wins this comparison because it simply feels more like a well-engineered, premium crossover that makes good on its brand promise. The XT5 is a dandy SUV, and it’s sold quite well since its introduction, giving Caddy an all-important crossover to pit against BMW and Audi.
But the new RDX continues to more than hold its own. It’s also extremely well priced. My tester was more than $10,000 less than the pricier cheaper XT5 trim that we sampled. OK, yes – the XT5 could be classified as more of a midsize luxury crossover, and perhaps we should see how the RDX stacks up against the Caddy XT4 that recently impressed us. But the Acura MDX has three rows, while the XT5 doesn’t (the new XT6 does). The vehicles are also almost exactly the same size (the XT5 is three inches longer).
The bottom line is that the RDX is and has been one of the most appealing offerings in the luxury market, both as an extreme value and as a capable crossover that’s a joy to drive. It’s one of those vehicles that I can recommend almost without reservations.

2019 Acura RDX SH-AWD A-Spec: Once Again Satisfying
The 2019 Automobile All-Stars winners will be revealed on Saturday, March 9 at 11:00 am Eastern, but first we’re introducing—in no particular order—a few of the contenders each day this week. Head here for an All-Stars preview, and be sure to check back all week to see the contenders as they’re announced!
The 2019 Acura RDX represents something great for Acura: a honed vision of its “Precision Crafted Performance” mantra, executed in a compact crossover package.
A fantastic powertrain holds up the performance part. The RDX’s 2.0-liter turbo-four—effectively a “lite” version of the Civic Type R’s engine—pumps out 272 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, and it’s paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission that fires off quick and well-timed shifts and doesn’t trip over itself hunting for gears. Its steering is precise, and with the help of Acura’s available Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, it’s easy to wheel the RDX through winding roads with gusto. Our tester’s A-Spec appearance package added additional flair to what’s an already aggressive-looking crossover.
The RDX is so good to drive that it won the heart of our resident racer and contributing writer, Andy Pilgrim. “This RDX is sneaky good,” Pilgrim said. “I’m not an SUV fan, but after a few driving miles my thoughts slid to the dark side: ‘How much are these? Asking for a friend.’”
Most editors found the cabin well built, with wood and metal accents and a stellar panoramic moonroof standard among an impressive mix of luxury-leaning features. But Acura’s new True Touchpad interface, which serves as the primary control for the infotainment console, drew some fire. “After meandering into a desolate area out of range of any cell service, I tried searching for a ramen place nearby,” daily news editor Conner Golden said. “Five minutes later, I couldn’t make sense of the trackpad-based system, which was overly sensitive and then immediately unresponsive. I gave up and drove toward town until I regained service.”
Although the staff was suitably impressed by Acura’s overall execution of the RDX, it didn’t quite stand out enough from what was an outstanding pack of contenders. Contributor Basem Wasef summed it up best. “There’s a lot to like about the RDX, though I suspect it suffered from ‘jack-of-all-trades, master of none’ syndrome,” he noted. “The RDX is altogether a nicely executed sport ute, but not quite distinctive enough to earn it All-Stars status.”
The good news for enthusiasts is the reborn RDX is proof positive Acura has found its footing once again. We look forward to seeing what’s to come.

2019 Acura RDX A-Spec Long-Term Update 1: Sporty?
The RDX’s A-Spec badges promise sportier performance than the average luxury crossover, connecting the new model to the original RDX better than the previous generation ever did.
A 272-hp 2.0-liter turbo-four powers every 2019 RDX, but it’s not the engine’s extra 20 horses over Accord 2.0s that intrigues us. Multiple editors have complimented the RDX’s engine note, which becomes louder as you move from Comfort to Sport and Sport+ modes. From a stop, our all-wheel-drive Acura reached 60 mph in 6.4 seconds, about as quick as a few all-wheel-drive 2019 Infiniti QX50s we’ve tested and our long-term 2019 Volvo XC60 T5 AWD (6.5 seconds).
The RDX’s A-Spec package replaces other trims’ 19-inch wheels and 235/55R19 all-season rubber with dark 20s and 255/45R20 all-season tires. An adaptive damper system is included on the higher Advance trim.
Road test editor Chris Walton called the RDX’s engine peppy, and he appreciated “quick and smooth upshifts” from the 10-speed automatic. The A-Spec package includes 20-inch wheels with more aggressive rubber, suedelike interior accents, ventilated front seats, a 16-speaker sound system, and exclusive-to-the-trim exterior styling modifications.
Twisting the big, centrally located drive-mode dial to Sport+ noticeably changes the crossover’s personality on the street. Suddenly, the 10-speed auto’s heightened responsiveness makes the paddle shifters unnecessary for spirited driving, the Active Sound system turns up the (engine’s) volume, and the steering feels different, too.
Some enthusiasts don’t mind a little body roll in sporty cars, but no one wants brakes described on the track as “spongy.” The RDX’s weakest dynamic link is brake feel, specifically how far down you have to press the pedal before any actual braking occurs. We aren’t fans of the brakes on non-A-Spec models, either, and hope future models will get an updated system. One positive: The 2019 RDX’s brakes help you come to a stop more smoothly once you’re used to it. Even so, there’s a middle ground between this Acura’s approach and the other extreme, a 505-hp Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio with oversensitive brakes we called “brutal” in everyday driving. Braking from 60 mph down to 0 took the Acura 116 feet, compared to 113 feet for the QX50 and 118 feet for the XC60 T5.
Besides our RDX A-Spec’s firm ride—maybe the Advance trim’s adaptive dampers would help—the Acura doesn’t shout its sportiness in Comfort mode when your commute moves at 6.5 mph, not 65 mph. And when you want a sportier response—with the exception of brake feel—the RDX is ready to play.

Finance: We drove a new $47,800 Acura RDX to see if the SUV lives up to its impressive reputation — here's the verdict
For many, many Americans, the RDX is their version of a premium wagon and it's dedicated to upscale family duty. But it also promises zesty performance and plenty of technology, given the typical needs and wants of an Acura enthusiast.
The Acura RDX is a critically important compact crossover for Honda's luxury brand in the US.
We borrowed a $47,800 Advance trim-level RDX and put it through its paces.
We came away just as impressed as we often are with Acura vehicles, whose price-to-quality ratio is hard to beat in the luxury space for most owners.
Luxury crossovers are a white-hot segment in the new-vehicle world. Screw up in this realm and you'll pay.
Acura can't afford to screw up because although Honda's premium marque has its loyalists — they're on par with BMW owners — the US-market crossover segment is a battlefield and new combatants are arriving all the time.
Lucky for Acura it has a solid compact SUV that, in its latest iteration, has gotten more solid.
The first-generation RDX landed in 2007, and the made-in-Ohio crossover came with a four-cylinder turbocharged engine, which was an oddity at the time for luxury vehicles. The second-gen hit in 2012, and the four-banger was replaced with a V6.
The all-important compact luxury crossover category demands that Acura keep pace, especially in the US, so for the 2019 model year we have an all-new RDX, tasked with maintaining the 50,000 in annual sales that the previous-gen enjoyed. Besides the engine change, the other major difference is that the RDX is now built on an Acura-only platform (the second-gen was based on the popular Honda CR-V).
For many, many Americans, the RDX is their version of a premium wagon and it's dedicated to upscale family duty. But it also promises zesty performance and plenty of technology, given the typical needs and wants of an Acura enthusiast. This new-gen RDX is also taking some design cues from Acura halo supercar, the NSX, which took home Business Insider's Car of the Year trophy in 2016.
The 2019 Acura RDX starts at about $37,000 for the front-wheel-drive version, but our tester was a $47,800 all-wheel-drive Advance trim level, fully loaded.
Here's how it went.
The 2019 Acura RDX looks undeniably sharp in a "Performance Red" paint job. To my eye, the latest generation of this compact crossover is pushing toward midsize dimension.
The minimalist design of the second-gen RDX is going away, replaced by a more sleek and dynamic exterior. I rather like the fractured belt-line and the painterly slashes of chrome, but they aren't going to be for everybody.
The RDX has good presence for an entry level luxury crossover. The space is very, very crowded these days as SUVs have supplanted sedans as the world's go-to premium choice.
The controversial chrome beak is gone, and the Acura badge has gotten quite large.
The "A" — styled as a precision-instrument caliper — sits at the center of what Acura calls a "diamond pentagon" grill. It looks cool.
So do the jewel-eye LED headlights ...
... Which bear more than a passing resemblance to those on the NSX supercar.
SUV rear ends are usually a weak point, aesthetically, and the RDX's is no exception. There's a lot going on back there, what with all the swoops and indents and those crab-pincer tail lights. Bonus: Dual exhaust!
Our RDX was of the "Super Handling" all-wheel-drive variety, with torque vectoring that sends traction to the wheel that needs it most. This helps the RDX with stable handling and in bad weather and on poor roads.
There's no third row of seats, and thanks to the RDX's larger overall dimensions relative to the previous gen, the cargo pace is now a considerable 30 cubic feet. There's also a power liftgate.
Time to pop the hood and check out that turbocharged four-cylinder powerplant.

I always find the Acura's driver's view to be soothing. That's weird, because you're presented with all kinds of buttons, thumbwheels, and a switch on the RDX's steering wheel. And although the analog instrument gauges are old-school, the somewhat complicated center display isn't."
The leather-wrapped steering wheel feels just right, and although purist won't like the electric power steering, I found it to be exceptionally precise. Acura's have always been, in my experience, easy to drive easy and easy to drive hard.
The RDX is no exception. It can't feel as aggressive and BMW X3, but it doesn't want to. And for average, everyday around-town motoring, the feel is impeccable.
To be honest, I gave up on the center display. It has a lot going in and can provide all sort of info and data, however. Anybody who wants to get in there and geek-out will get no argument from me.
Honda/Acura is famed for its interior ergonomics and design, but the brands have been tempted away from simplicity over the past decade. Thankfully, reason has returned. The RDX controls are simple and straightforward. Heated and cooled seats, as well as a heated steered wheel, are great features on the RDX Advance trim.
Personally, I also liked that the engine auto stop/start feature — intended to save fuel and cut down on emissions — can easily be deactivated by pressing a nice, big, easy-to-spot button.

Let's talk about Acura's new infotainment system. It's called "True Touchpad" and it uses a high-res center screen that juts from the dashboard and displays a host of apps, along the map, which is nearly always on view.
The smaller right side info can be flipped with the larger left side.
Here's where the magic happens. This touchpad can be used like a trackpad on a laptop, and there are several hard inputs. But you can also simply drop a fingertip to an area of the pad that corresponds to the screen.
It's an improvement over previous versions of Acura infotainment. For example, here's two-screen setup in a TLX A-Spec.
The changes are all about the user interface, which take a bit of getting used to. I got the hang of it in about 15 minutes and liked the system, in particular the comfortable padded wrist rest.
Business Insider's Ben Zhang was less impressed. But he agreed that it's an improvement over what Acura had been installing.
I found the voice-recognition feature to be satisfyingly accurate, and Bluetooth pairing, navigation, and USB/AUX inputs for devices were all successful. There are better infotainment options out there, but given Acura's history, this new True Touchpad approach has promise. Best of all, once you learn it, you can keep your eyes on the road.
Apple CarPlay is available, but not Android Auto yet.
So what's the verdict?
I'd buy one. Seriously, I enjoyed the RDX immensely in the week that I drove it around the Jersey 'burbs and the mean streets of New York City. But I tend to respond quote favorably to Acuras. For whatever reason, I think they combine a high level of luxury and value with legendary reliability and fun motoring that isn't too demanding.
If you just love to drive, something from BMW, Mercedes, or Audi might be more your bag. If you want absolutely bulletproof luxury, then look to Lexus (and be a bit less stimulated by exceptional engineering). If beauty is a must, turn to the Jaguar F-Pace.
But if you desire an excellent premium crossover SUV that will carry a family of four around in style, you'll be hard-pressed to do better than the new RDX.
With my colleague Ben, I agree that the new infotainment system is a work in progress. But it's a big improvement over the previous generation and a step in the right direction.
Acura has a way of being all things to all people, without causing that benefit to render its cars bland. Anybody who prefers to go Sport-Plus mode on the Dynamic selector will find that their luxury SUV can delivery more than a splash of snarl and attitude. (And maybe too much, as both Ben and I detected some harshness in the transmission's friskier shifts.)
The steering isn't mushy, and neither are the brakes. The torque-vectoring through the AWD drive system made the RDX feel genuinely sure-footed and composed when cornering, and the engine isn't cranking so much power that you feel you have to lay off in the curves, to avoid losing control.
Of course, where Acura truly shines is in the quality-to-price ratio. It's hard to obtain a better compact luxury SUV for this kind of scratch. Comparable German brands go for thousands more, similarly equipped. You're buying Acura's commitment to fine engineering and reliability, with just enough zip thrown in to remind you that you aren't driving a Lexus.
Bottom line: the 2019 Acura RDX is a purchase I can recommend you consider — without hesitation.

With Honda preparing a CR-V hybrid in some markets and the MDX already offering a hybrid model, an RDX hybrid could be part of the product plan after the non-hybrid model is revealed.
Matching Your Driving Mood
The 2019 RDX will have a version of the brand’s Integrated Dynamics system (IDS), which can change settings on the throttle sensitivity, steering, transmission, HVAC, and even the engine sound. Move from the TLX’s Econ or Normal modes to Sport+, and the car noticeably changes the way it sounds and drives. In the MDX, IDS settings can be programed into the two key fobs.

What Sacrifice?
Space comes at a premium in most luxury cars, but that’s not the case with the outgoing RDX. In fact, interior space was one of the bland-but-capable crossover’s best features; the 2018 RDX has more interior space than many of its similarly priced competitors, and don’t expect this to change on the new Acura. The outgoing RDX didn’t have reclining rear seats, but it shared the Honda CR-V’s simple latches in the liftgate area—pull a latch and part of the 60/40-split seat easily folds down. We hope this feature will make it onto the new RDX.
If the 2019 RDX remains on the spacious side of the segment, that could leave room for an even smaller crossover such as the CDX. Through the first 11 months of 2017, Acura’s two crossovers each outsold the brand’s entire car lineup.
Value
Although many over the years have questioned what Acura stands for, value is still one key brand advantage. The 2019 RDX will probably come standard with LED headlights, heated front seats, and a power liftgate yet still undercut a couple competitors in price.
