Brexit impact on UK car industry
Rather than creating post after post about news of yet more job losses in the UK car industry, I decided to create one entry and keep it periodically updated. Before the EU referendum, experts unanimously agreed that if the UK was to leave the EU it would result in job loses under all scenarios. A so called “hard Brexit” probably resulting in pretty much the end of all UK based industry.

The UK’s most and least reliable new and used cars have been revealed in the 2021 What Car?
Reliability Survey from Britain’s leading new car buying platform and consumer champion. Feedback from more than 16,000 car owners was analysed to find the country’s most dependable 178 models and 30 brands, from nearly new cars to those aged up to five years old.  This year, a record six models achieved a score of 100%: the current versions of the Audi TT, Mazda CX-3, Mini Convertible and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, and the previous-generation Dacia Sandero and Honda HR-V.  At brand level, Lexus and Dacia models were hailed as the most dependable for new and used buyers, while Fiat and Land Rover achieved the lowest scores.   Lexus gained an overall rating of 98.7% and none of its vehicles scored lower than 98.4%. Budget brand Dacia also impressed with a 97.3% overall rating, demonstrating that you don’t have to break the bank to buy a dependable model. In contrast, Fiat had the least reliable cars, gaining an 82.0% rating from owners, while Land Rover and Ford were second and third worst for reliability. Hybrids were rated as the most durable type of car, with an average class reliability score of 96.9%. The best performing hybrid was the Lexus NX (2014 – present), which managed a 99.8% score, while hybrid variants of the BMW X5 (2018 – present) were rated least reliable, with 89.7%. Luxury SUVs performed the worst in the study, achieving an average class rating of 88.8%, although the Porsche Macan (2014 – present) bucked the trend, managing a creditable 97.9%. The Land Rover Discovery (2017 – present) received the lowest score in this class with a 72.1% result. Owners were asked whether their car had gone wrong in the past 12 months, how long repairs took and how much they cost, with the overall score expressed as a percentage.  Of the 16,328 drivers surveyed, 20% had experienced a fault with their car in the past year, with 85% of faults repaired free of charge. For 7% of drivers, the repairs cost between £101 and £500, while 2% had to pay more than £1500 to get their car back on the road. A third of cars remained driveable and were fixed within a day, while 25% could be driven but took more than a week to repair.  What Car? editor Steve Huntingford said: “The UK’s used car market is currently booming, making it all the more important that people know which models will be reliable. GM, Ford and other carmakers can't get enough chips. It's a huge problem Chief Financial Officer John Lawler said that if the problem drags on through the spring, the company’s earnings could take a $1 billion to $2.5 billion hit. It’s not just an issue for Ford. GM (GM) is shutting some plants in the United States, Canada and Mexico next week due to the insufficient supplies, while Volkswagen, Fiat Chrysler (FCAU), Toyota (TM), Nissan (NSANF) and Honda (HMC) have also been affected. “Despite our mitigation efforts, the semiconductor shortage will impact GM production in 2021,” GM said in a statement this week. “We are currently assessing the overall impact, but our focus is to keep producing our most in-demand products — including full-size trucks and SUVs and Corvettes — for our customers.” The backstory: Leading semiconductor manufacturers reassigned capacity from automakers last year after the pandemic hurt car sales, instead shipping chips to companies that produce smartphones, gaming systems and other tech gadgets that were in high demand. Now, supplies remain tight, and carmakers are struggling to secure the chips they need. The tiny parts are essential to production. The average car has between 50 to 150 chips, which are used in a growing number of applications, including driver assistance systems and navigation control. Bottlenecks may persist for months, weighing on the auto sector as it tries to recover from the pandemic. It could even force some companies to raise prices. “The current chip shortage poses a big threat of further slowdowns in production for the entire industry,” Jessica Caldwell, executive director of insights at Edmunds, told clients this week. Investor insight: Wall Street is mostly looking past the turmoil, sending auto stocks higher as companies make increasingly bold commitments about future production of electric and autonomous vehicles. Ford said Thursday it will invest invest $29 billion in electric and self-driving cars, though it needs to play a bit of catch-up, my CNN Business colleague Chris Isidore reports. EVs already make up nearly 3% of Volkswagen’s global sales, while GM announced last week that is expects to exclusively sell emission-free vehicles by 2035. Kuaishou stock soars in biggest IPO since 2019 Kuaishou’s stock skyrocketed Friday as the TikTok-like video app scored the world’s biggest IPO since the coronavirus pandemic began. The details: Shares closed at 300 Hong Kong dollars ($38.70) apiece, a 161% jump over the 115 Hong Kong dollars ($14.80) issue price. The company raised a total of 41.3 billion Hong Kong dollars ($5.3 billion) in the offering, my CNN Business colleague Michelle Toh reports. If the company exercises an over-allotment option, the total raised could hit 47 billion Hong Kong dollars ($6.1 billion). Big picture: It’s the world’s biggest tech listing since Uber’s IPO in May 2019, and the largest public offering globally since Saudi Aramco’s in December 2019, according to Refinitiv. Kuaishou is one of China’s leading social media firms. The Tencent-backed company, whose name means “fast hand” in Chinese, owns an eponymous short-video and live-streaming app. Its platforms and mini programs have more than 300 million daily active users. It gets most of its revenue from the live-streaming business, where users can buy virtual items and present them as gifts to their favorite hosts. Live-streaming transactions accounted for 84% of revenue in 2019, according to a stock exchange filing. It also makes money off online advertising. “This is an incredible outcome,” said David Chao, co-founder and general partner of DCM, a Silicon Valley venture capital firm with $4 billion under management. His company was one of the earliest investors in Kuaishou, leading one of its first funding rounds back in 2014. DCM still has a 9% stake in the social network, which is now worth more than $14 billion. The firm said that would generate a return of roughly 600 times its original investment. Cars For Sale: South Africa’s Best 
A bit of a throwback, but herewith are the semi-finalists of the 2019/20 Cars.co.za Consumer Awards – powered by WesBank.
The awards programme recognises the best purchasing propositions in the respective categories of the new vehicle market.
“Vehicle purchases are amongst the biggest that consumers are likely to make in their lifetime,” said Ghana Msibi, executive head of sales and marketing at WesBank.
“Initiatives such as this offer credible opinions on the types of cars and features available in the market, and in so doing help consumers make informed decisions when choosing a new or used vehicle,” he said.
The 13 eventual category winners will be selected from the list of 65 vehicles, which includes model derivatives from 24 brands represented in the South African market.
All vehicles available on the South African market on September 1, 2019, were eligible, not only new products that were launched during the past 12 months.
Compared with the 2018/19 Cars Awards, the executive sedan category has been replaced with one that caters for premium-positioned crossovers.
The former Hot Hatch category (now named Fun Hatch) encompasses more affordable contenders and the price caps for the Premium SUV and Performance Car segments have been raised, it said.
“It is important to note that we analyse market changes proactively and adapt the categories to be better aligned with the South African consumer,” said Cars.co.za consumer experience manager Hannes Oosthuizen.
“With no new contenders in the Executive Sedan category, as well as very poor sales in that segment, we saw it fit to create a new category (to reflect growth and interest in upmarket crossovers) instead.
“Meanwhile there have been no new launches in the traditional hot hatch category, but there has been activity at a lower price point, so we’ve created a new category called Fun Hatch.”
And given the rapidly rising prices of cars for sale in Johannesburg, Oosthuisen said that sticking to a R1-million barrier for Premium SUV and Performance Car categories is no longer practical.
Volkswagen lead the charge in 2019/2020 again.
Even though 24 brands’ vehicles feature in the list of 65, five marques have more than three semi-finalists in the running for category honours.
Volkswagen has the most representatives (8), followed by BMW (6) and Audi, which has 5, although the A1 Sportback 40TFSI S Line is notably a semi-finalist in two separate categories.
Ford (5) and Toyota (4) round out the major manufacturers.

Auto123 presents its Top 11 Plug-in Hybrid SUVs now or soon to be available in Canada in 2020.
To say the least, the electrification of the automotive industry continues. The year 2020 is a major one for the purely electric sector, even though the pandemic has greatly slowed consumer enthusiasm, at least temporarily. Despite this historic brake, the Earth does not stop turning and the return to normal will eventually bring consumers back to the showrooms of car dealerships. There are signs that this is already happening.
While it is clear that commercial vehicles are still popular, their slightly higher fuel consumption than cars still makes some motorists hesitate.
That’s where plug-in hybrid SUVs come in. It has become an annual tradition for Auto123 to list utility models sold with the “PHEV” designation, and 2020 is no exception.
Unsurprisingly, the choice has expanded this year, especially in the luxury divisions. So now it’s time for the Plug-in Hybrid SUVs with all-wheel drive that will be available for sale in Canada in 2020. Last year, we included the Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivan and the Kia Niro PHEV, both of which are exclusively front-wheel drive.
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
He is often the one who comes to mind when VUS PHEV is mentioned in a discussion. The three-diamond manufacturer’s representative has been in service with us since 2018 and continues to be considered by compact SUV buyers who are tired of swallowing thousands of dollars at gas stations. The Outlander PHEV still runs on gasoline, but its electric range makes city driving less expensive and, above all, quieter!
Volvo XC60 / XC90 T8
Over the years, Volvo has positioned itself as a serious player in the electrical niche. Moreover, the small XC40 Recharge should be with us before the end of the year, while the Polestar division affiliated with Volvo will also make its entrance.
But while we’re waiting for purely electric propulsion, the Swedish brand is still marketing its two SUVs in a T8 livery, the name that sticks to its rechargeable hybrid models. Very little has changed for 2020 in the case of these two protagonists, a comment that applies to their impressive power and quiet ride.
Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e 4MATIC
Nothing to report with the rechargeable hybrid model in the GLC range, except perhaps a few details specific to the redesign for the 2020 model year.
Aside from these cosmetic changes, the GLC 350e 4MATIC is true to last year’s model year, with its mechanics that twin a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with an additional electric motor still delivering 315 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. Better yet, fuel consumption is no more than 10 litres per 100 km, in the city or on the highway.
Subaru Crosstrek PHEV
Subaru’s popular crossover is now available in a plug-in hybrid configuration. Its predecessor had been marketed in a hybrid version, but it didn’t meet with the expected success with the public.
This time, it’s more interesting. The Crosstrek PHEV (available only on the Limited version), which still adds close to $10,000 to the gas model’s bill, offers at least a 27-km pure electric range. The problem is that this distance is not impressive. Luckily, overall fuel consumption is lower than the regular model.
Range Rover or Range Rover Sport
The two top SUVs in the Land Rover lineup have been getting the Plug-In Hybrid technology from the house since last summer. This is a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged engine mated to a second, electric engine. The range in electric mode is 51 km and the total power output is 398 horsepower. No worries about this powerplant!
Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring
The Lincoln Aviator has been on sale for a few months now. The Grand Touring option came later, however. In this case, the Dearborn giant opted for electrifying performance by relying on a 400-horsepower twin-turbo V6 engine and another electric one, which boosts total power to 494 horsepower. Optimum torque is even more impressive at 630 lb-ft. of torque.
Lincoln will soon welcome (for model year 2021) a Grand Touring livery of the Corsair, the smallest SUV sold by the American luxury division.
Audi Q5 TFSI e
It’s a rare bird, this one, but Audi does market a plug-in hybrid version of its popular Q5. Instead of the usual 248 horsepower, the familiar 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged engine delivers 362 horsepower. As for the 369 lb-ft of torque, it’s also typical of electric powertrains.
The German automaker talks about a range of 40 km in electric mode, which, despite everything, lowers the average fuel consumption.
BMW X3 PHEV
The Bavarian manufacturer has long been involved in research into electric propulsion, with the exotic i8 being the brand’s first rechargeable hybrid vehicle. But the sports car is not very practical, unlike the X3, which is now offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The Canadian website also announces a PHEV livery for the X5, but the brand’s guide to the country doesn’t include it among the available choices.
At the very least, the X3 Plug-In Hybrid is a direct rival to the Audi Q5 TFSI e. The BMW representative isn’t as fast as the four-ringed vehicle with 288 horsepower, but still, in this niche, power isn’t everything. The electric range of 29 km is not the longest in the industry either.
Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid ou Turbo S E-Hybrid
The Stuttgart manufacturer has been electrifying some of its vehicles for several years now. The Cayenne is an excellent candidate to accommodate a battery pack and electric mechanics in tandem with the V6 turbo (in the case of the E-Hybrid) or the V8 turbo (in the case of the Turbo S E-Hybrid).
E-Hybrid performance is astounding, with 0-100 km/h achieved in 5.1 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package. The “big model” accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. Any questions?

Después de 8.793 kilómetros de dunas, pasos de montaña, pistas rocosas y diversos peligros a través de Perú, Bolivia y Argentina, la tripulación formada por Carlos Sainz y Lucas Cruz le ha dado al PEUGEOT 3008 DKR Maxi una magnífica victoria en el 40º Rally Dakar. Este tercer éxito consecutivo para el equipo Peugeot Total en el rally más exigente del mundo refleja el éxito comercial del PEUGEOT 3008 SUV, que fue elegido ‘Coche del Año’ en 2017.
Rendimiento y fiabilidad
El recorrido de la 40ª edición del Dakar ha demostrado ser particularmente exigente en el aspecto mecánico. Después de esta exigente prueba de resistencia de casi 9.000 kilómetros, el PEUGEOT 3008 DKR Maxi no solo ha ganado siete etapas, sino que también ha demostrado una fiabilidad notable. Los únicos problemas encontrados fueron problemas menores en la caja de cambios, mientras que el motivo de la retirada del PEUGEOT 3008 DKR Maxi nº 306 no se debió a problemas técnicos. Los ganadores del Dakar en 2010 volvieron a subir a lo más alto del podio al llegar a Córdoba con una ventaja de 43min40 sobre sus rivales. Esta victoria subraya su inversión incansable en el proyecto de rally raid de PEUGEOT, al haber puesto toda su experiencia y talento en el desarrollo de los coches DKR.
Las tribulaciones de “Monsieur Dakar”
Stéphane Peterhansel y Jean-Paul Cottret, los ganadores del Dakar en 2016 y 2017 con PEUGEOT, han tenido un rally lleno de acción con dos desafortunados reveses. En la etapa 7, la tripulación n° 300 tuvo que virar bruscamente para evitar a un quad y destruyó la suspensión izquierda-trasera de su coche al chocar contra una roca oculta. Hacia un reto eléctrico

“En general, ha sido una muy buena semana para nosotros. Las dunas en Perú fueron nuestra principal carta para triunfar. Después de eso, las cosas fueron sucediendo poco a poco. Perdimos 1h45m en Bolivia después de golpear una roca que no vi. Era tan imposible ver que ni siquiera estaba demasiado enfadado. Salão do Automóvel 2020: Kia está fora! Após 14 edições consecutivas, a Kia Motors do Brasil anunciou nesta terça-feira, 18/02, que não participará da 31ª edição do Salão Internacional do Automóvel de São Paulo, a ser realizado entre os dias 12 e 22 de novembro, no São Paulo Expo. A alegação é semelhante às demais ausências: investimento em ações de marketing direto com os consumidores alvo. Com a decisão da Kia, já são 15 marcas a abandonar do #SalaodoAutomovel: BMW, Mini, Toyota, Lexus, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Suzuki e Chevrolet. Marcas que Já não participaram em 2018 também seguem de fora:  Peugeot, Citroën, Jaguar, JAC, Land Rover e Volvo. No caso da Kia é uma pena, pois a marca lançou no mercado externo os novos Sorento, Optima e Cadenza, além do Seltos. Todos seriam bons showcars. 2018 Daihatsu Terios Examen

Certaines voitures grandissent dans l'âge. Alors que certains ne reçoivent que leur prix a augmenté. Parmi toutes les voitures, il ya certains qui grandissent en taille. Ils sont présentés comme des mini-voitures ou les petits véhicules de segment. Mais avec le temps, ils grandissent dans les manèges passionnés en plein fledge.
Ici, nous parlons de la Terios Daihatsu. Le Daihatsu l'a lancé comme la voiture Kei, un mini SUV. Mais après le succès de la deuxième génération, cette voiture a été convertie en un PLEIN spectre DE taille moyenne SUV. C'était en 1997 quand Daihatsu a présenté les Terios. Le véhicule a été lancé pour remplacer le Rocky qui faisait juste à égalité.
Le Terios a été lancé pour obtenir une meilleure réponse du marché que Rocky ne pouvait pas produire. Mais il n'a pas gagné beaucoup de renommée par rapport à la version plus petite introduite pour cette voiture. Eh bien, la deuxième génération a continué avec les spécifications similaires, mais une meilleure conception. Et avec cela la version plus petite, "Terios Kid" est même resté sur le marché. Mais cette fois, la réponse a été meilleure que la première génération. Alors que sa plupart du crédit va à Toyota.

Eh bien, en 2015 Daihatsu a dévoilé le concept FT. C'était un VUS de taille moyenne avec des regards audacieux et agressifs. Tout comme les VUS multi-over modernes. Et deux ans plus tard, la version de production de la troisième génération Terios a été introduite. Il a été totalement basé sur le concept qui a affiché lors du Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show 2015.
C'était spectaculaire de voir un Terios complètement grandi. Il ne ressemblait pas à un mini SUV sniffy qui oscille dans les rues. Et de la même manière, le prix a augmenté assez généreusement. Eh bien, le modèle le moins cher de la Terios est disponible pour aussi peu que 13 664 $. C'est certainement le prix d'une berline standard.
Le Daihatsu Terios ne semble plus être le membre des voitures Kei. Comme ses échelles de performance ont soulevé plus que la spécification permise pour la dynastie des petites voitures. Tout comme son prédécesseur, il a un moteur 4 cylindres de 1,5 L. La transmission est similaire à celle de Toyota Rush. D'une certaine façon, ces deux voitures sont les frères et sœurs adoptifs.

Eh bien, le Terios a 104 ch de puissance. Il est de 3 ch de moins que la puissance de génération précédente. Et le couple est maintenant 3 lb-pi de plus que ce qu'il était avant. Malgré ces changements, il n'y a pas beaucoup de changement dans les informations d'identification de performance de cette voiture.
Dans notre test de performance, les Terios ont lancé de 0-62 mph dans les 12,4 secondes. Précisément, c'était la performance au sol la plus difficile de cette voiture. Et nous avons fait son top 105 mph. Sur la note standard, les Terios ne pouvaient guère faire ce genre de cascade. Même beaucoup de gars n'accepteraient pas que cette voiture peut montrer ce genre de performance.
Loin de la performance, le Terios est emballé avec quelques caractéristiques de manipulation décente. Comme il a la direction électrique qui semble un peu lourd. Mais sur les routes lisses, il est assez facile de gérer cette voiture. En outre, le freinage est assez fin pour arrêter cette voiture sur le signal de circulation. Même les virages serrés ne dérangerait pas beaucoup.

Si ça avait été un Terios de Toyota, il aurait pu devenir un singe. Mais grâce à Daihatsu qu'ils ont conçu une forme décente pour cette voiture. Eh bien, par rapport à ses générations précédentes, cette voiture a atteint une apparence magnifique. Il a augmenté en taille radicalement et a obtenu un certain attrait agressif. Eh bien, la conception intègre une grande calandre chromée, roues en alliage de 16 et 17 pouces, un aileron arrière et une forme décente pour l'aérodynamique. Doanh số xe 6 tháng đầu năm 2019 tại Thái Lan tăng trưởng hơn 7%. Trong số đó, ba thương hiệu ôtô dẫn đầu doanh số tại nước này vào nửa đầu 2019 là Toyota, Isuzu và Honda.

Theo tin tức xe hơi, doanh số xe 6 tháng đầu năm 2019 tại Thái Lan có các biến động tích cực, ghi nhận mức doanh số 523.770 chiếc trong nửa đầu năm 2019; tăng 7,08% so với cùng kỳ năm ngoái. Ba thương hiệu dẫn đầu về doanh số tại nước này là Toyota, Isuzu và Honda. Toyota đã báo cáo mức tăng trưởng 20,82% khi bán được 171.465 chiếc từ tháng 1 đến hết tháng 6, qua đó chiếm thị phần 32,74%, tăng 2,44 % từ thời điểm cuối năm 2018. Toyota hiện có xe thuộc nhiều phân khúc ở Thái Lan: xe khách, bán tải, SUV và xe van.
Isuzu đứng ở vị trí thứ hai với 89.177 chiếc được bán trong nửa đầu năm 2019, tăng 3,26% so với năm trước, qua đó chiếm 17,03% thị phần trong giai đoạn này. Honda đứng thứ ba với doanh số 64.699 chiếc, tăng 8,12% và chiếm thị phần 12,35%. Xếp ở vị trí thứ tư và thứ năm là Mitsubishi (45.343 chiếc) và Nissan (34.577 chiếc). MG thuộc sở hữu của Trung Quốc đã tăng một bậc lên vị trí thứ tám khi đạt doanh số 13.067 chiếc, tăng 8,64%.
Tại thị trường ô tô Thái Lan tăng trưởng tích cực trong 6 tháng đầu năm, một số thương hiệu vẫn giảm doanh số. Mazda chỉ bán được 31.931 xe trong giai đoạn này, giảm 4,95%. Thương hiệu Ford của Mỹ báo cáo doanh số 26.984 chiếc, giảm 17,42% so với cùng kỳ năm ngoái. Doanh số của Suzuki cũng giảm 12,25% xuống còn 12.138 chiếc trong nửa đầu năm nay. Đối với các hãng xe cao cấp, Mercedes-Benz bán được 7.289 chiếc trong giai đoạn này, giảm 3,08%. BMW (bao gồm Mini) cũng giảm doanh số 1,51% xuống còn 5.474 chiếc.
