Toyota Avalon (1995-2022)

This post will cover the Avalon from the beginning of it's production in 1994 to it's eventual discontinuation in the U.S. by 2022.

1995-1999 Toyota Avalon (XX10)

The Avalon was first introduced in February of 1994 at the Chicago International Auto Show. The name itself however, originated from a concept car of the same name, which was displayed at the 1991 Toyota Motor Show. The car was introduced as a 1995 model. This Avalon was based on XV10 generation of the Camry. The trim levels for this generation Avalon were the XL and XLS, based on the LE and XLE trim levels respectively.

2000-2004 Toyota Avalon (XX20)

Although the Avalon was still based on the design of the Camry, it was produced as a much larger sedan for the second generation. For the 2003 model, the Avalon was given a slight facelight, including an updated grille and tailights. There were also minor updates to the interior as well.

2005-2012 Toyota Avalon (XX30)

For this generation, the Avalon was stylized as a much larger car than the previous two generations. At was at this time that the Avalon also became the first ever Toyota car to use a single piece wiper blade design. The XX30 Avalon also introduced the Touring and Limited trim levels, while the standard trim became fitted with larger 16 inch wheels. This generation was also facelifted twice, once in the 2008 model year, with a newer front end, and once for 2011 with an entire redesign.

2013-2018 Toyota Avalon (XX40)

The fourth generation Avalon was based on the design of the Lexus ES. Much like the first two generations, the Avalon's redesign was based on the design of the Camry. It recieved a new grille, different headlight and tailight designs, and a touch screen on the interior. This generation also introduced a hybrid variant of the Avalon. For the 2015 model year, the Avalon underwent a facelight that featured a new front grille and an updated suspension system.

2019-2022 Toyota Avalon (XX50)

The fifth generation Avalon was introduced at the 2018 North American International Auto Show and went on sale in May of that year. This generation also introduced the XSE trim levels, as well as having the XLE, XSE, and Limited trims offered on the hybrid version of the Avalon. In August of 2021, it was announced that this generation of the Avalon was be the last and it was to be discontinued follow the 2022 model in favor of producing the Toyota Crown crossover in its place. Though the Avalon still continues to be produced in China.

The Toyota Camry has been on top of the sales charts charts for as long as I can remember, this has been built on the back of cheap pricing and Toyota’s perceived reliability and partly because it was made here in Australia. While it’s been on top of the sales charts, I’ve often heard it described as white goods on wheels with uninspiring dynamics and handling with boring and lackluster interiors, the old joke was every Camry should come with bowls hat on the rear parcel shelf from the factory. That is until now, Toyota released the new generation fully imported Camry at the end of 2017 built on Toyota’s new New Global Architecture not only offering better looks, an updated interior,  but also much better dynamics and handling due to a lower centre of gravity . The big question was when I picked up the keys to the Camry Hybrid was can this be the Camry that breaks the boring mould. They say first impressions make a big difference and in this case yes they do I really like the Camry’s looks, the Camry has a lower roof line then the previous model giving it a sleeker more athletic profile, the front end styling reminds me of a helmet from a scifi movie. The sleek profile, attractive alloy rims, decently styled rear end complete with subtle  rear spoiler just add to the over all attractive package that looks absolutely gorgeous in the Eclipse Black paint.

The Camry comes in 4 models Ascent, Ascent Sport, SX and SL and is available with either a 2.5L 4 cylinder or 2.5L Hybrid power trains, the SX and SL models also come with the option of a 3.5L 224kW V6 as well. I’m testing the entry level Camry Ascent Hybrid and was really impressed by the equipment levels, gone are the days of old where entry level meant it was short of features, you still get the crappy plastic steering wheel which was the only thing I didn’t really like inside. But you do get stuff like dual zone air con, keyless entry and push button start (which are exclusive the Hybrid model), 17inch alloys, LED headlights with automatic high beam, LED day time running lights, 7 inch touch screen with full Bluetooth connectivity and six speakers. Plus important safety features such as Pre-collision alert, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), lane departure warning with steering assist, active cruise control, 7 airbags and reverse camera not bad at all for a car that is just under $34,500 drive away for me in N.S.W.

Steeping inside and I could tell Toyota has made a vast improvement over the previous model the interior not only has a much better look but more importantly a more up market feel thanks to the stitching on the dash, black piano and brushed metal finishes and the abundance of soft touch materials. The cloth covered seats are extremely comfortable to sit in, the plasticy steering wheel while being the only thing i didn’t really like on the inside but at least it had buttons for audio, cruise control and 4.2 inch screen between the tacho and speedo which can be used to display myriad of information from fuel economy, trip information details from the hybrid drive train which found particularly interesting at times.

The shapely dash has an up market feel thanks to the aforementioned stitching and soft touch materials, there is metal finished strip that starts at the drivers side of the dash and curves down to the console on the passenger side which not only looks great but also adds some contrast with the dark finishes. The centre stack is home to the 7 inch touch screen for the infotainment system which I found easy to use and set to up my phone.  Bad sadly the lack of android auto or apple car play means the system is lacking behind most other manufacturers that have moved in that direction. Which means the system lacks the user friendliness and features that come was using systems, it also means there’s no sat nav that you can easy access as well. You can download the Toyota link app but I’ve heard not only is it painful to use but a pain to set up so I didn’t even bother trying at least I could live stream my music from Spotify via Bluetooth so I was happy. Head in leg room in front was extremely good which carries on over to the back seats as well and even my kids were impressed with the room they had. Toyota have thankfully moved the battery pack to under the rear seat so boot space is improved over the previous model at 524L which can increase thanks to the 60/40 split fold rear seat.

While the interior and features are a massive leap forward the star of the show for me sits under the bonnet in the form of Toyota’s drive train. Which features a 2.5L 4 cylinder petrol engine rated at 131kW and 221Nm combined with an 88kW 202Nm electric motor powered by a Ni-MH battery pack. Not only does this make the Camry extremely tractable, the Camry will easily keep up with traffic the hybrid power train has plenty of torque when you need it and it will easily cruise at highway speeds. One I did notice was how quiet it was when driving while the transition from battery to the petrol is smooth and mostly unnoticeable you can hear the petrol engine when kicks in although the engine is greatly mooted, most of the time it’s just amazing how quiet it actually is to ride and drive in. To say the fuel economy figures were good would be a grose understatement but also returns extremely good fuel economy figures, now i had a hint the Camry was going to return decent fuel economy figures for the week but even I was damn surprised with how well it actually did. During the week for my commute to work plus running around doing family commitments I averaged 5.0L/100km which makes it easily one of the most fuel efficient cars I have tested in fact the figures it returned were even better then what I got with a Suzuki Swift not bad for a car that is weight ways just over 1600kg. On the road the Camry is one of best riding cars I’ve had the pleasure of driving and riding in, it rides the bumps and imperfections of your typical Sydney B road smoothly and without any harshness being transmitted back into the cabin. The steering feel is well weighted with plenty of feel so you know the wheels point where you point them every time, although when parking the steering is light enough to wheel around with one hand making it easy to get into parking spots. One thing that does taking getting use is the brakes being a Hybrid the brakes are a little on the sensitive side specially when switching between the regenerative braking to normal braking which did take a little bit for me to get use to once I did they didn’t pose an issue, the ABS works extremely well as I found out when some numb nut decided to pull out in front of me and i was able to steering around them easily with ABS activated.

Safety wise as you would expect the Camry has received a 5 star ANCAP safety rating and comes standard with the following safety features. 7 SRS airbags dual front, front side, full length curtain airbags and driver’s knee airbag, Toyota Safety Sense + (Lane Departure Alert, Pre-Collision Safety System, Automatic High Beam, all speed Active Cruise Control Anti-lock Braking System with Electronic Brake-force Distribution and Brake Assist Vehicle. Stability Control and Traction Control, Hill-start Assist Control and Brake Hold, Electronically Controlled Brake system. It gets bonus points for having a standard fit reversing camera with moving guidelines but then looses them as there are no reverse or front parking sensors to get them you need to upgrade to the Camry Ascent Sport hybrid but that also adds sat nav, a powers drivers seat and premium steering wheel which gets rid of the crappy plastic covered one that I hated.

The big question i had when I picked up the Camry was could this be the Camry that finally breaks the boring mould well the answer to that is an unequivocal yes. After a week I couldn’t come away more impressed then I was with the Camry, it comes with a long standard equipment list specially for an entry level model. The ride is unbelievably smooth and compliant, there is a great amount of space and not only does it make a great car to commute back and forwards to work in every day it makes the perfect family car. The only downsides I found with the car were the lack of rear parking sensors and the plastic steering wheel both can be fixed by going up the next model. The only other thing is the warranty while most car manufacturers are moving towards 5 year or more warranties with unlimited kilometres Toyota is behind the times by still only offering a 3 year 100,000km warranty. So i think it’s time for them get with the times and offer a longer warranty specially when the company has built a reputation of offering reliable cars. The Hybrid battery though comes with an 8 year 160,000km warranty The added benefit of the Hybrid system which uses hardly any fuel only makes it a more intelligent choice, while the local market is turning to more and more to SUV’s the Camry Hybrid makes the perfect sense for somebody looking for a 5 seat family car and will use a lot less fuel then most SUV’s. Although sedans other than Ford’s models have also taken a hit in the sales department, comparable vehicles like Toyota Camry and Honda Civic hold strong with steadily increasing sales. Essentially, foreign auto makers are dominating the sedan market over U.S. models.

Because of Ford’s century-old standing as the world’s first automobile maker, it’s understandable that a drastic change like this would come about. As millennials shift gears in the economy, the surviving auto-maker is attempting to move with the times and focus on its better-selling and more profitable line of trucks and SUVs.

U.S. sales for trucks and SUVs have increased in recent years, largely attributed to the fact that gas prices are fairly low when compared to its price point 10 years ago. The average price of gas in the summer of 2008 was $4.10. As summer 2018 approaches, the national average is a significant 25% less per gallon. This (coupled with the fact that gas prices haven’t increased as high as they were in 2008) is leading many Americans to purchase larger SUVs and trucks, without considering economic factors such as gas costs.

So what else is new with the announcement of sedans being eliminated from Ford’s vehicle market? Ford will continue making new-year models of its sporty and classic Ford Mustang. Alongside the only car to be kept in the vehicle sweep will be the added Focus Active, a new crossover vehicle expecting release in 2019. Ford is also working on adding new SUV and truck models with hybrid and electric features that will become available around the time same time its sedans will be phased out.

Toyota Surpasses 100,000 Hybrid Sales in Australia

Toyota has sold more than 100,000 hybrid vehicles in Australia since the original Prius went on sale here in 2001.

Toyota Australia reached the milestone towards the end of April, just ahead of the launch this month of its first hybrid SUV, the all-new RAV4.

RAV4 Hybrid joins Camry Hybrid, Corolla Hatch Hybrid, Prius, Prius c and Prius v to form the broadest line-up of electrified vehicles offered by any company in Australia.

Toyota will launch another two hybrid models later this year, including the next-generation Corolla Sedan Hybrid, with a further two models to be added to the model line-up by the end of 2020.

Customer deliveries of Toyota’s hybrid electric vehicles in 2019 are on forecast to be well in excess of 20,000 vehicles, doubling the total of 11,590 hybrid vehicles sold in 2018.

Hybrid deliveries this year are expected to exceed 10 per cent of Toyota’s overall sales, up from 5.3 per cent last year and 3.9 per cent in 2017.

In the first fourth months of this year, sales of Toyota’s hybrid vehicles have risen by 85 per cent compared with the same period a year ago.

The 2019 tally of 5,613 hybrid cars represents almost 8.7 per cent of the brand’s total sales and compares with 3,029 hybrid cars or 4.4 per cent of sales at the same time last year. In April 2019, Toyota sold 1,458 hybrid vehicles or 9.6 per cent of its total sales for the month.

Hybrids account for almost half of all Camry sales this year (45.4 per cent), up from 39.6 per cent last year and 20.7 per cent in 2017.

A similar trend has emerged for Corolla, with hybrid variants now comprising 31.4 per cent of 2019 sales compared with 12.5 per cent last year and 5.8 per cent in 2017.

Corolla has become the most popular hybrid vehicle in Australia, with 2,957 sales so far this year, edging ahead of Camry on 2,298 sales.

But Camry reigns supreme over the long term, accounting for more than half of all Toyota hybrids sold in Australia, with 55,000 vehicles moving into owner hands since first being introduced in 2010.

Prius – the first Toyota hybrid in Australia back in 2001 – has topped 20,500 sales, followed by Corolla (10,600), Prius c (9,400) and Prius v (4,600).

Official vehicle sales figures show consumers in South Australia and the ACT are the country’s biggest hybrid fans as a proportion of total sales.

Last year, South Australians bought 6.2 per cent of Australia’s new vehicles, but 12.3 per cent of Toyota’s hybrids. The ACT, where government sales are significant, accounted for 2.9 per cent of Toyota’s hybrid sales compared with 1.6 per cent of total new-vehicle sales.

Overall, Victoria – despite its smaller population – has bought the most Toyota hybrid vehicles (32.2% of the total) ahead of NSW (29.6%). They are followed by Queensland (17.5%), SA (8.5%), WA (7.7%), ACT (2.2%), TAS (1.2%) and NT (1.1%).

Toyota Australia’s Vice President Sales and Marketing Sean Hanley said drivers of the 100,000 Toyota hybrid vehicles have had a huge impact on the environment as well as their own hip pockets.

“There is a lot of buzz lately about EVs being the future of mobility, but the reality is the technology is already here and Toyota has been leading the way with hybrid petrol-electric powertrains in Australia for almost 20 years,” Mr Hanley said.

“Hybrid electric technology is not only more affordable than pure electric vehicles, it requires no charging infrastructure, emits less CO2 than a traditional petrol combustion engine and is more fuel-efficient.

“An owner of today’s Camry Ascent Sport Hybrid can achieve savings of more than $800* and reduce CO2 emissions by almost 1.3 tonnes* every year, so the total economic and environmental savings from 100,000 hybrids are huge,” he said.

“This clearly demonstrates that hybrid drivetrains are the most affordable and accessible solution available today. It is the most practical way to reduce emissions because it is available now and it uses existing infrastructure.”

Mr Hanley said Toyota Motor Corporation had been investing for decades in alternative powertrains, including hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEV).

“We are well-positioned to meet anticipated new emissions regulations whenever they come, but we also know we have a wider responsibility.

“Our parent company recently announced it will grant almost 24,000 royalty-free patents and provide technical support on our vehicle electrification systems.

“In Australia, we will continue to advocate for a collaborative approach with governments, industry and other key stakeholders to fast-track the development of the infrastructure required to support the widespread sale of electrified vehicles,” Mr Hanley said.

Globally, Toyota has delivered more than 12 million electrified vehicles, headed by Prius with more than five million sales.

It has announced a significant acceleration in the development and launch of electrified vehicles including new variants of that use the company’s tried and tested hybrid electric technology as well as developing new hydrogen fuel-cell electric and battery electric models.

The stated aim is for electrified vehicles to account for more than 50 per cent of Toyota’s global new-vehicle sales around the end of the next decade.

Toyota’s hybrid know-how has also been successfully applied to motorsport, with a hybrid-powered race car winning last year’s gruelling 24-hour race at Le Mans.

Longest-lasting vehicles: SUVs are way ahead

    If you’re looking for a reliable vehicle for the long haul, a big, sturdy SUV is hard to beat.

Full-sized utilities account for half of the 14 longest-lasting cars – those most likely to pass 200,000 miles – according to auto research site iSeeCars.com.

Analysis of 13.8 million car sales in 2018 revealed the Toyota Sequoia to be the longest-lasting vehicle of all, joined by six others in its class from Chevrolet, GMC, Ford and Lincoln.

With the midsize Toyota Highlander Hybrid and Toyota 4Runner also on the list, the long-running credentials of SUVs appear even stronger. But while the utility segment dominates, there are other options.

The longest-lasting car is the Toyota Avalon sedan, while the Honda Odyssey minivan represents the out-and-out family hauler. There are three pickups also; the Honda Ridgeline and Toyota’s Tacoma and Tundra.

These are the longest-lasting vehicles, with the percentage of models exceeding 200,000 miles.
