▌NORA MADDOX — Actualización.
— Su nombre completo es Theresa Nora Maddox-Lavrof. Aunque todo el mundo la conoce por el nombre de Nora, a excepción de su abuela materna, que siempre la llama Tessa o Theresa. Desde que empezó la universidad, muchos de sus compañeros de clase también utilizan el nombre de Tessa para dirigirse a ella, algunos haciendo alusión a Tessa Young.
— Nació en la gran manzana, el 19 de Diciembre de 2002. Está a punto de cumplir diecinueve años.
— Es hija de Theodore Lavrof, un famoso historiador dedicado a la arqueología desde muy temprana edad; Y de Claire Huttinger, directora general de una empresa dedicada a la construcción de edificios (arquitectura). Tiene otros dos hermanos: Shadia, de treinta y uno, y Travis, de veintisiete, ella es la pequeña de la familia. Siguiendo los pasos de sus hermanos mayores se cambió el apellido, y al igual que ellos, pidió el consentimiento simbólico a su progenitor.
— Cuándo Nora cumplió los tres años, Claire la inscribió en un programa de iniciación para jóvenes que querían dedicarse al patinaje artístico. La pequeña de los Lavrof había visto un programa en la televisión y había quedado prendada. Siguió el proceso de forma consecuente, nunca faltó a un entrenamiento, a no ser que fuera estrictamente necesario, y se tomó muy enserio las clases. El equipo la ayudó a compaginar los estudios con el deporte. Aunque más tarde, unos meses antes de comenzar el último curso de instituto, Nora abandonó de manera oficial el patinaje artístico de competición. Actualmente sigue disfrutando de la pista de patinaje alguna vez durante la semana para no perder la costumbre del ejercicio ni la práctica.
— A día de hoy ha terminado el instituto, se graduó el pasado 9 de Junio de 2020 junto a sus amigos, y siguiendo los pasos de Shadia destaca en varias áreas de las materias escolares. Ha compartido clase con Gwen ( @the-x-pack ) y Peter ( @spideype ) dos de sus mejores amigos, con este último también formaba equipo dentro del periódico escolar. A su vez ha formado parte de varios clubes escolares, entre ellos el de teatro, fotografía y el club de ciencias.
— En 2018 acudió como acompañante de una de sus amigas al casting de la saga After, no tenía ninguna intención de participar en el proceso pero uno de los directores de casting se interesó por ella y le pidieron hacer la prueba. Finalmente quedó seleccionada entre otros muchos aspirantes y actores veteranos. A finales de Julio de ese año la llamaron para hacerle saber que había conseguido el papel de Tessa Young en el film. En agosto de ese mismo año comenzaron las grabaciones y se estrenó el 12 de Abril de 2019. También ha participado en After: We Collided y After: We fell.
— Aunque se ha hecho conocida a través de la saga, Nora mantiene un perfil bajo en su vida pública, en raras ocasiones es la protagonista de noticias de la prensa rosa o similares. Participa en las premiaciones y las premiere pero su vida sigue siendo como hasta ahora. Es más, dentro de su entorno y en la universidad es una más, sin distinciones.
— Desde septiembre de 2020 cursa la carrera de periodismo en la universidad de Brown. Este 2021 será su segundo año de carrera, el pasado curso vivía en la residencia pero este año ha conseguido un piso propio cerca del campus.
— Hasta mediados de 2019, Nora había ejercido de niñera en sus ratos libres además de impartir clases extraescolares a niños pequeños de alguna asignatura concreta. Y por si fuera poco, Nora también cumplía algunas horas sueltas en una de las boleras de la ciudad de Nueva York. Actualmente es complicado compaginar todo, aunque sigue ayudando a algunos de sus antiguos alumnos si es necesario, incluso por videollamada.
— Tiene una estrecha relación con Massimo ( @julietasstory ), desde hace dos años son muy buenos amigos.
— Nora tiene algunos hobbies extra a parte del patinaje, entre ellos está la lectura, el cine, el teatro y los musicales, sus favoritos son: West Side Story, Moulin Rouge, Mamma mia, Grease, Chicago... Entre otros. Por otro lado tiene un afán especial por las novelas clásicas como: Orgullo y Prejuicio, Cumbres borrascosas, Romeo y Julieta, Sentido y Sensibilidad, Mujercitas...
— Tiene una estrecha relación con su padre y sus hermanos pero su madre es la excepción de la familia, a pesar de ello, ha estado viviendo con ella hasta el año pasado por lo tanto, Nora es, probablemente, la que mejor se lleva con la progenitora debido a la cercanía obligatoria.
— En octubre (4) de 2019 conoció a Noah Wallis y a principios de Febrero (2) de 2020 comenzaron a salir de forma oficial.
— Nora destaca por tener esa vibración risueña, con una sonrisa constante en los labios y mucho positivismo, es una niña que siempre intenta ver el lado bueno de cada situación pero también conlleva un doble filo, como es ese lado arisco y con carácter que solo enseña si es completamente necesario. Parte de este encanto fue lo que les animó a los productores para elegirla como Tessa Young, además de ver similitudes obvias entre ambas.
— Siente una admiración innata por Los Vengadores ( @thedarkestnightrol ) especialmente por Spider-Man ( @spideype ), es una fan incondicional del hombre araña. De hecho tanto Los Vengadores como Spider-Man eran parte activa, indirectamente, del periódico escolar en el que ella estaba presente. Todos los días había alguna que otra noticia redactada para ellos o de ellos en particular dado que ella afirma que siempre hay algo que contar. Aún espera que se les esté dando ese reconocimiento aunque ya no se encuentre allí.
— Compartía coche con su madre, un audi tt coupe en color negro, aunque desde que entró en la universidad su madre se lo cedió completamente para que pudiese desplazarse de un lugar a otro sin problemas.

First Look: The New Audi TT – An Update for the Design Icon
Twenty years after the series premiere of the original TT, the third generation of the Audi TT is receiving a comprehensive update. The design icon takes the stage with a sporty and refined exterior design, higher-powered engines and an extended scope of standard equipment.
The Audi TT stands for driving pleasure, design and close attention to detail: aluminum elements in the driver-oriented interior, progressive rim design, a short, ball-shaped gear lever knob, characteristic tank flap and round, dual-branch tailpipes are among the typical features of this compact sports car. The design with its incisive geometric forms has fans all over the world.
Refined, enhanced, extended Right on time for the 20th anniversary of the first Audi TT, the brand is especially highlighting the sports car character of the new model. Audi has accordingly refined the design of the new TT, enhanced its performance and extended the range of standard equipment. Besides the driver-oriented Audi virtual cockpit, the basic version of the new model now features the Audi drive select dynamic handling system, a rain and light sensor, heated exterior mirrors and the multifunction steering wheel plus, with which the infotainment and voice control system can be controlled entirely using the steering wheel. Also standard are the illuminated USB ports as well as Bluetooth for wireless pairing of devices.
Sporty and expressive: the exterior design More masculine, more progressive and even sportier than before – the exterior design of the new TT. The front features a three-dimensional Single frame radiator grille. Large side air inlets emphasize width even in the basic version.
At the rear, horizontal lines again underscore the width of the new Audi TT. There is no cap underneath the tank flap with its classic TT design; the driver can insert the gas pump nozzle directly into the opening – a typical sports car feature. Headlights with LED or Matrix LED technology are optionally available. The dynamic turn signals are a visual highlight here.
The new designed, optional S line exterior package underscores the sporty character of the Audi TT even more. It includes a full-length front splitter, vertical air inlets, a radiator grille in titanium black and specific side sills with inserts as well as a sporty rear end. Added is a wider diffuser and vertical air inlets below the rear lights with three horizontal fins each.
The TT Coupé and the TT Roadster are each 4.19 meters (13.7 ft) in length. Both body variants have short overhangs; their wheelbase measures 2.51 meters (8.2 ft). The new TT leaves the factory on 17-inch wheels; Audi and Audi Sport optionally offer 18, 19 and 20-inch wheels. Three new colors complete the range of paint finishes: cosmos blue, pulse orange and turbo blue (S line only).
High-powered: the engines For the new TT, Audi has a range of petrol engines in various performance levels, paired either with the six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. In both transmission variants, the close-ratio lower gears enable powerful acceleration, while the wide ratio of each transmission’s highest gear keeps the engine speed down. All new engines come with a gasoline particulate filter.
Effortlessly sporty: suspension and quattro drive The new Audi TT offers handling that is both dynamic and precise. If the customer chooses the S line sport package or Audi magnetic ride, the body is lowered by ten millimeters (0.4 in). Other chassis highlights include progressive steering, four-link rear suspension and Electronic Stabilization Control (ESC). The wheel-selective torque controlis activated in fast cornering and improves handling as required by means of precise brake interventions on the unloaded wheels on the inside of a curve.
Driver-oriented: the cockpit and the assistance systems The sports car character is also underscored by the driver-oriented interior with its clear lines. The slender instrument panel resembles an aircraft wing; the round air vents with integrated controls allude to jet engines – a classic TT detail.
Sport seats with integrated head restraints are standard on the Audi TT. S sport seats (standard in the S line sport package) with pneumatically adjustable side bolsters are optionally available. The luggage compartment of the 2+2 seater affords 305 liters of space (10.8 cu ft) underneath the stretched tailgate, while the Roadster offers 280 liters (9.9 cu ft).
All indicators appear in digital form on the 12.3-inch display of the Audi virtual cockpit. The driver can choose between two modes: in the classic view, the speedometer and tachometer take center stage. In “Infotainment” mode, content such as the navigation map is enlarged. The new sport display is optionally available and provides information on the engine output currently in use, as well as the torque and g-forces.
The MMI terminal on the center console has just six keys. The top-of-the-line MMI navigation plus with MMI touch integrates a touchpad on the upper surface of the rotary/push-button control that recognizes handwritten input and allows zooming, for example. The voice control system understands formulations from everyday speech.
Audi connect brings various online services on-board via fast LTE. The Audi smartphone interface connects smartphones with the car and can stream content seamlessly to the Audi virtual cockpit via USB. The high-end solution when it comes to hi-fi systems is the Bang & Olufsen Sound System. Its amplifier offers 680 watts of performance and a total of 14 channels. It fills the interior using twelve speakers, including two center speakers and two bass boxes.
The driver assistance systems embody the TT philosophy: they relieve the driver of work, so that he or she can fully concentrate on the road. The line-up extends from the lane change assist Audi side assist, the lane departure warning system Audi active lane assist and traffic sign recognition to the park assist with display of the surroundings and a rearview camera.
Classic: TT Roadster with soft top Like every open-top Audi, the new TT Roadster comes with a soft top in either black or gray. The soft top has a taut fit, and its excellent sound insulation makes it an “acoustic top.” With a weight of 39 kilograms (86.0 lb), the top is very light and doesn’t compromise the luggage compartment. A standard feature, the electrical drive opens and closes the top in around ten seconds at vehicle speeds of up to 50 km/h (31.1 mph).
The new Audi TT will arrive at German dealers and become available in other European countries in the fourth quarter of 2018 – customers can already pre-order the model from late September. Prices for the TT Coupé start at around 35,000 euros. The TT Roadster is available from around 37,500 euros.

The Story Behind The 2021 Audi E-Tron Electric Performance Car

The e-tron GT is Audi’s first fully battery-electric gran turismo. The polished design of this pinnacle performance car veils an awful lot of cutting-edge technology, namely expertise gained from sister brand Porsche and the electric Taycan project. The design, an evolution of the 2018 concept, is largely directed by the electric drive system beneath. The e-tron motors are mounted on the axles, while the large battery sits low in the floor space, which means, despite the car’s super-low coupé body form, the cabin space is large enough to sit four adults comfortably. Since there is no combustion engine under the hood, the front section is pushed forward, the large wheels sit at the far edges of the car and the overhangs are kept minimal for a subtle expression of electric power.
It is largely with the details where Audi wishes to make an electric statement with the e-tron cars. The marque’s signifying “Singleframe” grille features here, but modified to be relevant for an electric car that doesn’t require much engine cooling. Instead, it houses the sensors and is visually inverted to be the same color as the car but with a dark surround. The exterior is finished with advanced digital lights, while the taillights are linked by an animated light strip.
2021 Audi e-tron GT
The e-tron GT is being produced at Böllinger Höfe, a small-series production facility at the Audi’s Neckarsulm site in Germany – where the R8 is made – expanded, upgraded and converted specifically to be mainly automated. And for the final touch, the e-tron GT comes replete with its own engine note – a computer-designed sound with characteristics that can be adjusted to signify a clean drive.
I get on a video call to Ingolstadt, the home of Audi, to virtually meet up with Marc Lichte, head of Audi design since 2014.
Nargess Banks: What is Audi’s electric car design philosophy – your approach to visualizing battery electric cars?
Marc Lichte: As you know the car industry is going through a huge transformation. Electric car companies are doing a great job, but unlike us they don’t have a long history of car making. Some of the other carmakers, on the other hand, are adding what I see as bizarre elements to say their cars are EVs. Our philosophy is exactly the opposite. The electric drive system allows us to create the most beautiful cars in our history – be it the e-tron GT or the upcoming Q4 e-tron. Our approach is to use technology to create the most attractive cars.

It’s interesting to see that you’ve retained many of the classic Audi codes, namely the unique Singleframe grille, which now has other functions and a new expression.
The Audi grille is one of the key areas to help differentiate the combustion engine and electric cars. The unique Singleframe design has given us such a strong face since it was introduced in 2004. On the GT we introduce it as an inverted design. Since with electric drive the grille is no longer used purely as an air intake, but rather a sensor rack, we have painted the internal part body color and the outside black. It is a detail that you will see in our future e-tron cars to distinguish our battery-electric family.
You say you are using design to express the evolution of the drive system.
Battery range is a huge topic with electric cars. Some car companies put bigger batteries in the car, but that adds weight. Our approach is to work on sophisticated aerodynamics, which we’re using as our design principle and is best expressed on the e-tron GT. We visualize the air curtains, and we have a huge diffuser at the back, so the GT has one of the best aerodynamics in series production cars.
Audi’s visual identity for the GT
User experience is increasingly driving design, and you’ve spoken passionately about designing cars from the inside out. How do you direct a uniquely different user journey for electric driving?
You’re absolutely right in that for the last 100 years we’ve been designing cars from the exterior in – created a package and decided if it would have two or four or six seats. This car, though, has been designed from the inside-out. It is an extreme sports car and a modern interpretation of a GT but with four doors and it is real four-seater. I am very tall and have enough head clearance in the rear. This is all thanks to the battery-electric drive and the Porsche platform it has been built on.
Can you go through the design process?
Without a combustion engine, you can have a super low bonnet and a very slim and low cabin that sits on a wide body. The battery pack is located on the floor, but rather than being on a straight line, it is placed on different height levels so at the rear passenger area it dips to have extra room for the foot area. This package, therefore, enables a real functional but attractive car with the usability of a four-seater. Only the Porsche Taycan offers this.
Audi’s design philosophy for the e-tron GT
With the idea of premium and luxury advancing to offer alternatives to the traditional codes in car design, it is nice to see the GT offered with a sustainable interior package.
We are a premium brand; our customers expect leather, but their attitude is changing. So, for the first time, we’re offering an interior with carpets and seats made of recycled plastic bottles and recycled fabrics from our cars. It looks super attractive and sophisticated too. In my opinion, it represents the new premium. And we will offer this option on all-out future e-tron cars.
This generation of Audi e-tron cars seem to maintain much of the marque’s visual language but with electric vehicle signifiers. Will we be seeing bolder expressions, possibly even a new form language, with the next group of electric cars?
Yes. Currently, I’m working on a very exciting project – that I cannot sadly discuss with you – which has a radical new approach to design. That is the future.
Talking of the future, we are going through some extraordinary times. The pandemic aside, we are navigating the anxieties and opportunities of machine learning and the information age. Is it important to offer a more “human” experience in transport as we head deep into the AI future?
The Audi e-tron GT will go on sale from May 2021
AI is an enabler for us. Going back to the project I can’t talk about right now – but will be on the market in less than four years’ time – it’s based on a technology that will allow the car to be autonomous. It changes everything. Until now, the driver simply has had to sit in the driving position. But with AI, it completely changes the possibilities of the interior. I wish I could show you what we’re working on – it’s unbelievable what can be achieved.
Can you discuss it conceptually?
Imagine, today you sit in the driving position with everything operational by touch or voice. When the car drives by itself, you can relax and move in the interior. So how do you operate the car when you’re not in a fixed position? And what about safety when you’re not in a fixed seating area with airbags? We are working on all these elements which will change the car completely.
What is your favorite element of the e-tron GT?
The Quattro is in our DNA and we visualize it on our exterior design on the four wheels. The GT takes this expression to a new level where the muscles are so extreme – especially on the rear – a huge engineering challenge. This section took us three months to develop. It is the biggest muscle we have ever done at Audi and it looks unbelievable.
As a designer, this must have been a dream assignment.
Honestly, this car is a dream project. It has taken me twenty years as a professional designer, but it has finally happened.

Transformers wish list
I was bored yesterday and when I get bored I begin to speculate and mentally create. A post on TFW2005 had me thinking about underused characters and new molds. So I came up with this list.
10 Transformers I'd loved to see get new sculpts and my choices for their altmodes. Of course I know licenses would be fun, so maybe the altmodes would be 'Inspired' by these then.
Autobots:
1. Glyph - Xeno-geological scientist
Though she started out as a Bumblebee clone, the lil blue scientist deserves a mold of her own. Maybe she would come with a hunk of unrefined 'Energon' as an accessory.
Her new alt mode is a Uniti One, 2018. A Swedish crowd-funded electric car. Done in a royal blue with white highlights/pinstripes.
2. Pincher - Chemical Engineer
The Autobots can always use more scientists (even of the mad variety) and in their constant need for energon a chemical engineer would be perfect. His former altmode was a scorpion, but there are too many Decepticon scorpions so here we go. He can keep the pincher hands and have a beaker as an accessory.
His altmode is Buick Regal TourX station wagon. In honor of his former Pretender shell his altmode would be done in a yellow with teal highlights (roof, door handles, mirrors, etc)
3. Bumper - Scout
The Bumblebee fanboy would get a chance to shine on his own.
For his altmode I chose an Audi S1. Change the yellow to white and there ya go.
4. Quickshadow - Intelligence
Redcue Bots intelligence officer comes to the main line.

5. Minerva - Medic
I know she recently got a new Headmaster figure in Japan, but I want at least a commander size figure in the US. And this also would give Ratchet a break. Give her a pair of defibrillator looking pads as weapons/medical equipment.
Her altmode is a LADA Largus, a Russian station wagon esque vehicle. Why a Russian car, well i came across it while looking for vehicles and liked rhe look. I could easily see this done in her paint job and being used as an ambulance in rural areas.
Decepticons:
1. Scowl - Werewolf/Lycan warrior
Like his fellow Pretender Monster Icepick, Scowl is just too good of a name/character to leave alone. His robo-mode would still have Werewolf features, but would no longer be a little square block.
His alt mode is a Chrysler Portal electric minivan. Ok so it's just blocky enough to be a small rib at his former figure.
2. Greasepit - Saboteur/Resource Procurement
Though his Micromaster altmode was that of a monster truck, I feel he would be better suited (as a conman and as a saboteur to have a speedier/quieter altmode). Maybe come with a gaspump that turns into his weapon as a homage to his old gas station set.
His altmode is a Plymouth/Chrysler Prowler. Silver grey paint job.
3. Filch - Thief
RID2015 had this theif as a magpie alt mode and well I thought a plane to magpie would be interesting.
Her altmode is an OV-10 Bronco Light Attack Plane in all black
4. Gutcruncher - Scrap metal salesman
The unscrupulous former Action Master needs a nice altmode to carry off all the scrapmetal from the battle field.

The conversation that ensues offers a window into the ways in which artificial intelligence could transform our experience behind the wheel: not by driving the car for us, but by taking better care of us as we drive.
Before coronavirus drastically altered our routines, three-quarters of U.S. workers—some 118 million people—commuted to the office alone in a car. From 2009 to 2019, Americans added an average of two minutes to their commute each way, according to U.S. Census data. That negligible daily average is driven by a sharp increase in the number of people making “super commutes” of 90 minutes or more each way, a population that increased 32% from 2005 to 2017. The long-term impact of COVID-19 on commuting isn’t clear, but former transit riders who opt to drive instead of crowding into buses or subway cars may well make up for car commuters who skip at least some of their daily drives and work from home instead.
Longer commutes are associated with increased physical health risks like high blood pressure, obesity, stroke and sleep disorders. A 2017 research project at the University of the West of England found that every extra minute of the survey respondents’ commutes correlated with lower job and leisure time satisfaction. Adding 20 minutes to a commute, researchers found, has the same depressing effect on job satisfaction as a 19% pay cut.
Switching modes of transit can offer some relief: people who walk, bike or take trains to work tend to be happier commuters than those who drive (and, as a University of Amsterdam study recently found, they tend to miss their commute more during lockdown). But reliable public transit is not universally available, nor are decent jobs always close to affordable housing.
Technology has long promised that an imminent solution is right around the corner: self-driving cars. In the near future, tech companies claim, humans won’t drive so much as be ferried about by fully autonomous cars that will navigate safely and efficiently to their destinations, leaving the people inside free to sleep, work or relax as easily as if they were on their own couch. A commute might be a lot less stressful if you could nap the whole way there, or get lost in a book or Netflix series without having to worry about exits or collisions.
Google executives went on the record claiming self-driving cars would be widely available within five years in 2012; they said the same thing again in 2015. Elon Musk throws out ship dates for fully autonomous Teslas as often as doomsday cult leaders reschedule the end of the world. Yet these forecasted utopias have still not arrived.

A smaller and less heralded group of researchers is working on how cars can make us happier while we drive them. It may be decades before artificial intelligence can completely take over piloting our vehicles. In the short run, however, it may be able to make us happier—and healthier—pilots.
Lane changes, left turns, four-way stops and the like are governed by rules, but also rely on drivers’ making on-the-spot judgments with potentially deadly consequences. These are also the moments where driver stress spikes.
Many smart car features currently on the market give drivers data that assist with these decisions, like sensors that alert them when cars are in their blind spots or their vehicle is drifting out of its lane.
Another thing that causes drivers stress is uncertainty. One 2015 study found commuters who drove themselves to work were more stressed by the journey than were transit riders or other commuters, largely because of the inconsistency that accidents, roadwork and other traffic snarls caused in their schedules. But even if we can’t control the variables that affect a commute, we’re calmer if we can at least anticipate them—hence the popularity of real-time arrival screens at subway and bus stops.
The Beaverton, Ore.-based company Traffic Technology Services (TTS) makes a product called the Personal Signal Assistant, a platform that enables cars to communicate with traffic signals in areas where that data is publicly available. TTS’s first client, Audi, used the system to build a tool that counts down the remaining seconds of a red light (visually, on the dashboard) when a car is stopped at one, and suggests speed modifications as the car approaches a green light. The tool was designed to keep traffic flowing—no more honking at distracted drivers who don’t notice the light has turned green. But users also reported a marked decrease in stress. At the moment, the technology works in 26 North American metropolitan areas and two cities in Europe.
TTS has 60 full- and part-time employees in the U.S. and Germany, and recently partnered with Lamborghini, Bentley and a handful of corporate clients. Yet CEO Thomas Bauer says it can be hard to interest investors in technologies that focus on improving human drivers’ experience instead of just rendering them obsolete. “We certainly don’t draw the same excitement with investors as [companies focused on] autonomous driving,” Bauer says. “What we do is not quite as exciting because it doesn’t take the driver out of the picture just yet.”
Pablo Paredes, an instructor of radiology and psychiatry at the Stanford School of Medicine, is the director of the school’s Pervasive Wellbeing Technology Lab. Situated in a corner of a cavernous Palo Alto, Calif., office building that used to be the headquarters of the defunct health-technology company Theranos, the lab looks for ways to rejigger the habits and objects people use in their everyday lives to improve mental and physical health. Team members don’t have to look far for reminders of what happens when grandiose promises aren’t backed up by data: Theranos’ circular logo is still inlaid in brass in the building’s marble-floored atrium.
It can be hard to tell the lab’s experiments from its standard-issue office furniture. To overcome the inertia that often leads users of adjustable-height desks to sit more often than stand, one of the workstations in the team’s cluster of cubicles has been outfitted with a sensor and mechanical nodule that make it rise and lower at preset intervals, smoothly enough that a cup of coffee won’t spill. In early trials, users particularly absorbed in their work just kept typing as the desk rose up and slowly stood along with it.
But the millions of hours consumed in the U.S. each day by the daily drive to work hold special fascination for Paredes. He’s drawn to the challenge of transforming a part of the day generally thought of as detrimental to health into something therapeutic. “The commute for me is the big elephant in the room,” he says. “There are very simple things that we’re overlooking in normal life that can be greatly improved and really repurposed to help a lot of people.”
In a 2018 study, Paredes and his colleagues found that it’s possible to infer a driver’s muscle tension—a proxy for stress—from the movement of their hands on a car’s steering wheel. They’re now experimenting with cameras that detect neck tension by noting the subtle changes in the angle of a driver’s head as it bobs with the car’s movements.

On a test drive earlier this year, a chatbot speaking through the car’s audio system offered me the option of engaging in a guided breathing exercise. When I verbally agreed, the driver’s seatback began vibrating at intervals, while the voice instructed me to breathe along with its rhythm.
The lab published the results of a small study earlier this year showing that the seat-guided exercise reduced driver stress and breathing rates without impairing performance. They are now experimenting with a second vibrating system to see if lower-frequency vibrations could be used to slow breathing rates (and therefore stress) without any conscious effort on the driver’s part.
The goal, eventually, is a mass-market car that can detect an elevation in a driver’s stress level, via seat and steering wheel sensors or the neck-tension cameras. It would then automatically engage the calming-breath exercise, or talk through a problem or tell a joke to ease tension, using scripts developed with the input of cognitive behavioral therapists.
These technologies have value even as cars’ autonomous capabilities advance, Paredes says. Even if a car is fully self-driving, the human inside will still often be a captive audience of one, encased in a private space with private worries and fears.
Smarter technologies alone aren’t the solution to commuters’ problems. The auto industry has a long history of raising drivers’ tolerance for long commutes by making cars more comfortable and attractive places to be—all the while promising a better driving experience that’s just around the corner, says Peter Norton, an associate professor of science, technology, and society at the University of Virginia and author of Fighting Traffic: The Dawn of the Motor Age in the American City. From his perspective, stress-busting seats would join radios and air conditioners as distractions from bigger discussions about planning, transit and growing inequality, all of which could offer much more value to commuters than a nicer car.
In addition, how long it will be before these latest features become widely available options is an open question. Paredes’ lab had to suspend work during the pandemic, as it’s hard to maintain social distancing while working inside of a compact sedan. TTS is in talks to expand its offerings to other automakers, and Paredes has filed patents on some of his lab’s inventions. But just because a technology is relatively easy to integrate in a car doesn’t mean it will be standard soon. The first commercially available backup cameras came on the market in 1991. Despite their effectiveness in reducing collisions, only 24% of cars on the road had them by 2016, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and most were newer luxury vehicles. (The cameras are now required by law in all new vehicles.)
These technologies also raise new questions of inequality and exploitation. It’s one thing for a commuter to opt for a seat that calms them down after a tough day. But if you drive for a living, should the company that owns your vehicle have the right to insist that you use a seat cover that elevates your breath rate and keeps you alert at the wheel? Who owns the health data your car collects, and who gets to access it? All of the unanswered questions that self-driving technologies raise apply to self-soothing technologies as well.
Back in Palo Alto, the pandemic still weeks away, I am piloting the Leaf around the parking lot with a member of the lab gamely along for the ride in the back. The chatbot asks again what’s stressing me out. I have a deadline, I say, for a magazine article about cars and artificial intelligence.
The bot asks if this problem is “significantly” affecting my life (not really), if I’ve encountered something similar before (yep), if previous strategies could be adapted to this scenario (they can) and when I’ll be able to enter a plan to tackle this problem in my calendar (later, when I’m not driving). I do feel a little better. I talk to myself alone in the car all the time. It’s kind of nice to have the car talk back.
“Great. I’m glad you can do something about it. By breaking down a problem into tiny steps, we can often string together a solution,” the car says. “Sound good?”

My Weekend with Lotus: 2015 Lotus Evora 3.5 S vs 2014 Exige 3.5 vs 2018 Lotus Exige 350 S
I have recently began to look for a replacement for my 1999 TVR Cerbera, which is starting to get increasingly difficult to run and find parts for. It occurred to me that I have never driven a Lotus, and they are benchmarks in the car world for lightness, quickness and purity - there's no more persistent cliche than "X is fast in a straight line, but it's no Lotus through the corners." Well, what actually is a Lotus like through the corners? One call to a local dealer later, and I'm heading down to test drive both a 2015 Lotus Evora 3.5 S (check out the Doug video here) and also the more hardcore 2014 Exige 3.5: essentially, a larger, more powerful Elise. I drove my TVR down there to talk about a partial trade, so it ended up being a three way comparison between three very unique British vehicles, all approx 1.1 tons with circa 350hp on tap.
2014 EXIGE 3.5
I drove the Exige 3.5 first. It looked, felt, and drove like nothing else I have ever experienced. I thought it would be basically a Porsche Cayman with fewer features, but it is completely its own car. Climbing in is memorable in of itself. You have an enormous side wall which you need to sort of 'fall' over to plonk your butt in the seat. A bit of human origami later, and your arms and legs are in. Starting it up, and the 3.5 litre supercharged V6 (actually a Toyota engine, which makes it the first British sports car in history to have a shot at 250k miles) barks into life. Front visibility is incredible with a tiny bonnet that rapidly plunges away, and rear visibility is better than you would think given there's an engine in your rear view mirror.
Handling is insane. "Like a go-kart" is the cliche here, but go-karts kind of suck compared to the Exige, with their rear-only braking and lack of power. The Exige is a wonderful way to learn about how mid engined exotica handles. With un-powered steering and un-servoed brakes, communication doesn't get much better. The engine is wonderfully progressive and has a perfectly flat curve of torque from idle right up to the 6k redline. There was definitely a whiff of lag in the supercharger that is noticeable in a car as connected as this, and was really my only criticism. What would a naturally aspirated unit feel like? Well, I actually have an answer in my TVR Cerbera, which cranks out 360hp with a N/A six cylinder unit. The throttle response is just exquisite, but you're looking at a major tune-up every 6,000 miles.
2015 EVORA 3.5 S
Next, into the Evora. This one was a bit of a disappointment. It's much more luxurious than the Exige, is a much prettier looking car, and doesn't have the comical climbing in and out procedure. It has four seats, though the rear ones are a bit of a joke in terms of usability. It felt quite soft and distanced from the road, and has the bizarre choice of a torque converter based automatic gearbox, i.e. not a dual clutch. Driving it was kind of forgettable, and you quickly forget that you are technically in an exotic mid engined Lotus. You could easily commute and drive this thing every day, and for me, that means this car kind of misses the point. I feel like it is aimed at the Audi TT crowd, i.e. people who want something different and sporty looking without the compromise and impracticality of a real exotic.
2018 EXIGE 350 S
Having ruled out the Evora, I wanted to see if an Exige was really for me. I hired one for 4 days from a rental firm that offers the Exige 350 S, a reworked version of the Exige 3.5 that I test drove. Instantly, you can feel the improvements. The slightly clacky chain-based gear lever has been replaced by a rod-based mechanism with much greater clarity and feel. The cabin has been made much nicer with some dapper leather and contrasting stitching. The instruments have been reworked to be more logical. That beautiful suspension has been made even better, with just that extra level of tautness and feedback, without making it overly hard or unpleasant.
I drove the thing for 320 miles across a mix of winding country lanes, fast highways, and through medieval cities. Only the worst of lumpy roads could defeat it and make it feel unsettled. 99% of the time, it was utterly dominating the road in a way you would not expect a 1150kg car with a roofline just 44 inches off the ground to be. Whatever twists, turns, stops and starts you push this car through, it just has more. Long, hard corners are especially incredible with that perfectly flat supercar feel and a moment of inertia acting from the engine behind your head and going straight through you to those rapidly loading front wheels. It took the supercar formula and made it accessible. It's not seven feet wide, it doesn't have tank turret visibility, it won't snap on the limit and it even takes Toyota spare parts.
Downsides? Well, the seats aren't very comfortable, the louvre engine cover does restrict rear visibility, and a value for money question does creep in. Why am I paying £60k ($100k) for what is essentially a Franken-ToyotaCamry that has been taken apart and reassembled by a team of manic engineers who left 60% of the components on the factory floor? I guess cars are like high end hi-fi. The more money you pay, the less buttons the equipment has. It's just fundamentally set up to feel right.
Was it for the car for me? Really, I don't know. One requirement I have of my sports cars is: does it make everyday, legal driving fun? For the Exige, the answer is yes, but you're constantly aware that the car is capable of so much more in a track or race environment. With an Exige, I feel like you need to not just buy the car but also the lifestyle. Think less about what color you want it in, but where and when you are going to take it to the track. Less about wax jobs, and more about who you want to tutor you around Brands Hatch. The Exige just takes driving to another level, and you have to be sure that this is a place you want to go.

Genesis G70 is the 2019 MotorTrend Car of the Year
Wind your mental clocks back just over three decades. The year is 1985, Ronald Reagan just began his second term in the White House, and a new Korean car company was selling a Giugiaro-designed hatchback for the low, low price of $4,995.
Americans couldn’t pronounce the name of the brand (Hun-dee? Hi-yun-day? Hoon-dye?). And its little Excel did anything but. The wheezy econobox’s most notable performance credential was the LAPD’s dubious—later retracted—claim that Rodney King was driving one at speeds of 110 to 115 mph.
Fast-forward to the present. How beyond belief is it that that same cheap and cheerful automaker—Hyundai—not only has launched a luxury brand but has also built a better BMW 3 Series fighter right out the gate than the Japanese luxury brands have in numerous attempts?
That car is the Genesis G70, and we have voted it the 2019 MotorTrend Car of the Year. That’s all pretty unthinkable, right? Unthinkable, that is, unless you’ve been paying attention.
Hyundai launched Genesis Motors two years ago with the impressive G90, a full-size luxury machine that humbles cars such as the BMW 7 Series and Lexus LS. However, the G90 doesn’t really do much against the 4,700-pound German silverback in the room—the mighty Mercedes-Benz S-Class. And although the quite-fine Genesis G80 is a capable midsizer, it doesn’t exactly send shivers down the backs of engineers in Stuttgart or Nagoya. It isn’t, as we like to say, a needle mover.
The G70, however, is. The segment the G70 competes in—entry-level compact luxury sport sedans—has long been defined by the BMW 3 Series. However, for the past decade or so, the Bavarian’s claim of supremacy has been in doubt. That has opened the door for a plethora of stellar sedans from half a dozen countries, ranging from Audi to Cadillac to Jaguar to last year’s COTY, the Alfa Romeo Giulia. Despite comparison tests showing BMW is no longer in ascendency, when creating segment benchmarks, automaker product planners still circle back to, “We want to create a 3 Series fighter.”
Of course, it helps to have a bunch of ringers on your development team to help bring those Eurocentric touches to your first effort—folks like BMW dynamics veterans Albert Biermann and Fayez Rahman, Bentley design talents Luc Donckerwolke and SangYup Lee, Mercedes color/trim specialist Bozhena Lalova, and Bugatti Chiron designer Sasha Selipanov. Coordinating this dream team is former Lamborghini brand czar Manfred Fitzgerald, who has created a Genesis “brand book” to keep his troops focused.
The result of all this hard work is a stunning, value-packed sport sedan that should shake up any shopper’s consideration list.
“What’s remarkable about the Genesis is the Koreans have done what Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and GM have all failed to do: build a legitimate BMW 3 Series competitor,” international bureau chief Angus MacKenzie said.
Over many beers, you and I could sit and pick apart that statement. Yes, the original Infiniti G35 caught BMW flat-footed. Agreed, dynamically speaking, the Cadillac ATS and aforementioned Giulia are superior to the F30 3 Series. However, Angus’ point is that there is no asterisk required for the G70. We don’t have to say the car is better in this way but not that. No excuses are necessary. Am I saying the G70 is perfect? Of course not. No car is. But I am saying that the G70 is exceptional, and when stacked up against our six key criteria, it clearly emerges as our 2019 Car of the Year.
Before delving into said criteria (and in particular Engineering Excellence), I’d be remiss to go one step further without mentioning the G70’s platform cousin, the Kia Stinger. A finalist at last year’s Car of the Year competition, two negatives held the Stinger back from top honors: Its interior design is too blandly similar to every other Kia extant, and its suspension does not befit its sporty-car pretentions. More impressively, we brought a 3.3-liter RWD Stinger GT with us to our 2018 Best Driver’s Car party. There the Kia finished an honorable ninth place out of twelve. That may not sound like much—until you take into account that several bona fide six-figure supercars were ahead of it, and one (Corvette ZR1) finished behind it. Still, the Stinger has felt a bit … unfinished.
Given one additional year of development time, what we assume is a different sort of customer to chase, and perhaps even a different mandate, the G70 does not suffer from the same shortcomings. “The G70 is smooth, quiet, fast, upscale, nimble, good-looking, and a great value,” guest judge (and AMC, Chrysler, and Ford engineering guru) Chris Theodore said. “It’s very good at almost everything.”
The G70 makes a terrific all-arounder, but certain triumphal notes do stand out. If you want a seat at the 3 Series table, true sporting ability trumps a perfectly damped ride and NVH-free cabin. Some version of the word “balance” appears seven times in the notes from seven judges; any suspension complaints had to do with ride quality, not with handling.
“Holy moly, such ferocity and control,” road test editor Chris Walton said. “My attention was rapt. My heart raced. Held to the standard-bearer, a BMW 3 Series, this car out of the gate is better. It’s more evolved and more luxurious than the original Infiniti G35 was, has an edge to it that a Mercedes-Benz C-Class lacks, and feels more alert than an Audi A4.”
We should mention performance under the hood. The optional 3.3-liter twin-turbo G70 is a ferocious animal. The RWD car hit 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, whereas the heavier AWD car did so in 4.8. The rear-driver did the quarter-mile run in 13.2 seconds, whereas the all-wheeler was just a tenth behind. That’s quicker than the BMW 340i, a touch slower than the Mercedes-AMG C 43, and right on the nose of the 340-hp version of the Jaguar XE. “Your basic rocket ship,” Theodore said. “The engine pulls to infinity and beyond.”
Curiously, few of the 5,595 words we collectively wrote as notes about the G70 mention anything about the base 2.0-liter version feeling slow or underpowered. Yet the numbers tell a different story. The manual 2.0-liter takes 7.2 seconds to hit 60 mph, and the automatic requires 7.4 seconds. By contrast, the BMW 330i needs just 5.5 seconds to hit 60 mph, the Mercedes C 300 sedan takes 6.0 seconds, and the Alfa Romeo Giulia Q2 requires 5.2 seconds. The G70 similarly trails in the quarter—more than a second off its nearest rivals. “The 2.0-liter makes most of its power above 3,000 rpm, and the transmission is geared a bit too long to let the G70 make the most of that meat,” features editor Christian Seabaugh said.
Our fully loaded 2.0-liter Dynamic and the decently contented, power-packed 3.3T Advanced both came in under 45 grand. That’s thousands of dollars if not tens of thousands less than Genesis’ competitors. “I’m blinking hard, looking at the Monroney,” executive editor Mark Rechtin said. “I’m trying to figure out how this is possible. I’m not sure if there’s another vehicle in the segment that drives this way at this price point.”
Like all Car of the Year winners, there’s an X-factor at work, some secret spicy sauce that makes the eventual victor jump up off the page, out of the various spreadsheets, and down from the minds into the hearts of the judges. Last year’s champ, the Alfa Romeo Giulia, had it in spades. So does this year’s Genesis. “Somehow,” technical editor Frank Markus said, “this one, with rear-wheel drive, put it all together for me.”
For others, too. Check out this praise from senior production editor Zach Gale: “What an incredible first effort from a new brand.” Seabaugh professed love for the upgraded engine: “What a great way to wake up. This 3.3-liter TT V-6 is just a monster. I absolutely adore this engine. This was my favorite G70 on the proving ground, and it continues to be in the real world.” Then there’s editor-in-chief Ed Loh: “The pull of the 3.3T makes this one easy to love. BMW, Audi, Lexus, Acura, and Infiniti have a real problem on their hands.”
Advancement in design is what you would expect from a car company that has poached talent from Europe’s finest. The G70 is not derivative, but anyone who’s hung around premium German cars will notice a certain resemblance. Genesis didn’t crib its classmates’ homework, but it is working from similar notes. Said guest judge (and former Chrysler design boss) Tom Gale: “A lot of credit is due regarding package execution and combination of design elements for this segment.”
Once inside, the interior fitments are clearly worthy of the compact luxury segment. Genesis had four models on hand for us to sample. “Very upscale interior—almost Mercedes-like,” Theodore said. Detroit editor Alisa Priddle followed with more detailed notes: “Gorgeous quilted black-and-white seats with the diamond pattern in the white stitching.” Associate online editor Michael Cantu said the G70 “has the fit and finish some automakers would dream of.”
As is the case with many compact luxury sedans equipped with leather-clad power front seats, the G70 has a rather tight back-seat area. I’m 5-foot-10, and I fit fine behind a like-sized driver. But 6-footers felt pinched. It’s not big back there. Your friends will fit, just not comfortably for lengthy road trips unless front-seat occupants slide forward a bit.
So yes, there are shortcomings. The 2.0-liter version needs to undergo a kale cleanse, as it’s among the heavier sedans of its class. Rechtin called out its lane keep assist function as wandering. Loh and Markus noticed detectable amounts of road NVH creeping into the cabin on rough aggregate paving. MacKenzie felt the engine note needs refining. And Seabaugh was dismayed that the infotainment interface makes no bones that it’s shared with down-market Hyundai and Kia models.
Genesis shows how a new model from a new brand must enter a crowded segment, one where both heritage and perception count. Not in the middle, not as merely a value proposition or even as a funky alternative, but at or so very close to the top that everybody is forced to take notice. If there are sins, they’re easily forgiven. Alfa Romeo did it last year with the Giulia. Genesis does so this year with the G70. If we can once again journey back to the 1980s, Lexus did exactly this (and then some) with the release of the initial LS 400. The entire industry was put on notice. Some brands (hello, Lincoln) have yet to fully recover because the parent companies refused to recognize the threat and invest the funds necessary to fight back against the hard-hitting, hungry, hustling newcomer. The other brands, chiefly the Germans, evolved. Sure beats extinction.
