Carros que duraram pouco no Brasil: relembre 10 modelos
Eles tiveram uma passagem quase meteórica pelo Brasil. São sedãs, SUVs, hatches e até stations-wagons que não vingaram mais do que quatro anos de vendas no mercado nacional. Os motivos são diversos: desde planejamento errado por parte das marcas, posicionamento equivocado de preços ou até canibalização dentro da própria linha. Mas o fato é que todos esses carros duraram pouco. Conheça 10 modelos que não esquentaram espaço na vitrine da concessionária.
10. Fiat Brava

Despedida: setembro 2003
O jeitão diferente, especialmente pelas futuristas lanternas com filetes horizontais, não foram o suficiente para manter o hatch médio de quatro portas no Brasil – o de duas portas era o Bravo, que só viria a ser fabricado anos depois por aqui, em outra geração. Um dos pecados foi ser lançado com o motor 1.6 16V do Palio, ainda por cima menos potente, com 99 cv.
Tinha bom espaço interno, posição de dirigir ergonômica, mas o câmbio de curso longo e o volante de diâmetro grande não condiziam com a proposta. A esportividade deu um alento com a versão HGT com o 1.8 16V de 132 cv. O último suspiro foi a entrada do 1.6 Corsa Lunga de 106 cv em 2001, mas a Fiat encerrou sua produção em Betim dois anos depois.
9. Volkswagen Eos

Despedida: 2010
A passagem do estiloso cupê-cabriolet foi quase tão rápida quanto o tempo que a capota levava para recolher. Exageros à parte, começou a ser importado de Portugal em 2009 – em uma súbita leva de lançamentos da Volkswagen, que incluiu Passat CC e Tiguan. Tinha desempenho garantido pelo motor 2.0 turbo de 200 cv com a caixa automatizada de dupla embreagem e seis marchas.
Feito sobre a plataforma do Golf de quinta geração (um dos que não foram vendidos no Brasil), vinha bem equipado, mas vendeu apenas 118 unidades em cerca de um ano. Não teve jeito: acabou entrando para o rol de carros que duraram pouco.
8. Hyundai Sonata

Despedida: fevereiro de 2014
O sedã médio-grande retornou em sua sexta geração ao mercado brasileiro, mas não vingou nem quatro anos. Vinha da Coreia do Sul pelas mãos do Grupo Caoa (importador oficial da marca) com motor 2.4 quatro cilindros de 182 cv e aquele recheio para enaltecer o custo/benefício.

Tinha assistente à partida em rampas, faróis de xenônio, chave presencial, banco do motorista com ajustes elétricos e teto panorâmico. A chegada do novo Azera, com um V6 de 270 cv, tirou a razão de existir do Sonata, que se despediu (de novo) do Brasil no início de 2014.
7. Geely GC2

Subcompacto de marca chinesa, com cara simpática inspirada num panda, montado no Uruguai e vendido por menos de R$ 30 mil. Quem embarcou nessa em 2014 não deve ter ficado muito feliz. Menos de um ano depois o GC2 deixava de ser vendido no país. Para piorar, o Grupo Gandini – que também cuida da Kia por aqui – suspendeu as operações em 2016.
A culpa foi para o dólar alto e o Inovar Auto. Em 2018, a empresa anunciou o fim das atividades da Geely no país. O carrinho usava motor 1.0 de 68 cv e não vendeu nem mil unidades no tempo curto de vida. Curiosamente, a Geely é dona da Volvo.
6. Renault Symbol

A fábrica de Santa ISabel, em Córdoba, na Argentina, precisava de ocupação quando o Clio já dava sinais de cansaço. A marca francesa, então, bolou o Symbol, uma releitura do Clio Sedan, só que com vontade de ser “premium”. Era vendido com motor 1.6 16V de 115/110 cv e ainda no ano de lançamento recebeu versões com o 1.6 8V de 95/92 cv.
Gozou até de certo sucesso no início e chegou a ser visto com frequência como táxi, mas isso não impediu que ele se tornasse um dos carros franceses que duraram pouco. Ganhou até série limitada Connection, porém o acabamento ruim e a chegada de outros sedãs espaçosos complicou a vida do modelo.
5. Chevrolet Sonic

Despedida: setembro de 2014
Com visual ousado e plataforma moderna, o Sonic começou a ser importado em 2012 da Coreia do Sul nas configurações hatch e sedã para brigar entre os compactos premium. Tinha conjunto mecânico elogiável, com o motor 1.6 16V de 120 cv e transmissão automática de seis marchas ou manual de cinco.
No ano seguinte, a linha 2014 já tinha cidadania mexicana, mas os preços não baixaram muito. A fama de mecânica cara e a chegada de modelos como Onix e Cobalt acabaram roubando vendas. A linha vendeu menos de 5 mil unidades no seu ano de despedida.
4. Dodge Durango

A Dodge sempre teve uma relação problemática com o mercado brasileiro. Veio e foi embora diversas vezes, com histórias diferentes. A última da marca foi com o Durango, que chegou importado dos Estados Unidos com sete lugares, motor V6 Pentastar de 286 cv e tração 4×4. Custava acima de R$ 180 mil e era bem equipado, com direito a duas telinhas de fábrica para a criançada no banco da segunda fila.
O último ato antes do adeus foi a adoção do câmbio automático de oito velocidades no lugar da criticada e confusa caixa de cinco marchas. A chegada de SUVs mais baratos e modernos sentenciou o fim de importação do Durango. Além disso, a Chrysler, dona da marca e já sob gestão Fiat pela FCA, estava focando em fazer os SUVs Renegade e Compass no Brasil.
3. Nissan Altima

O sofisticado sedã médio-grande esbanjava conforto. A quinta geração foi trazida dos Estados Unidos com boa lista de equipamentos, suavidade no rodar, acerto dinâmico surpreendente e espaço de sobra. O motor 2.5 de 182 cv emprestava desempenho bastante instigante para um três-volumes classudo.
O problema foi encarar rivais como Ford Fusion, Honda Accord e Hyundai Sonata, com propostas mais modernas e maior tradição no segmento. Consequentemente, o Altima é praticamente o campeão da fugacidade entre os carros que duraram pouco: permaneceu menos de um ano sendo vendido no Brasil.
2. Peugeot 508

Outro sedã médio-grande, começou a ser importado da França para agregar a imagem de requinte à marca e com a difícil tarefa de beliscar consumidores de modelos de luxo. Predicados neste sentido não faltavam ao confortável sedã. Tinha espaço de sobra, acabamento sofisticado e itens de série bacanas.
Entre os equipamentos, head-up display colorido com indicador de setas do GPS, ar-condicionado com quatro zonas, assistente de estacionamento automático, faróis bixênon e bancos dianteiros elétricos. Pelo visto, não conseguiu convencer nem os consumidores das marcas premium, nem os de rivais como Fusion e Accord.

1. Volkswagen Golf Variant

Por um momento o Brasil acreditou que as peruas estavam longe da extinção. Mas o intuito de perpetuar a espécie por aqui durou pouco mais de três anos. Sobre a plataforma da sétima geração do médio, a Golf Variant começou a ser vendida em meados de 2015 com motor 1.4 TSI de 140 cv, câmbio de dupla embreagem DSG e a mesma solidez de construção do hatch. Ainda vinha com preços competitivos e o propulsor passou a ser flex em 2016.
Não bastou para se manter no mercado. Logo após a reestilização de junho de 2018, a Golf Variant teve a importação interrompida do México. Hoje, station-wagon abaixo de R$ 100 mil no país, só se você for frotista e gostar muito da Fiat Weekend.

Hasta hace unos años, los coches no eran compatibles con nuestros teléfonos más allá de parcas conexiones mediante dispositivos manos libres de terceros a través de Bluetooth. Con el tiempo, llegaron soluciones como Android Auto o Apple CarPlay, con el objetivo de integrar nuestros móviles dentro del propio vehículo, con interfaces personalizadas que nos permiten controlar varios de sus apartados.
En concreto, Android Auto se encuentra disponible para más de 400 modelos de coches, por lo que procede comentar cuáles son dichos modelos compatibles, así como todo lo que conviene saber sobre Android Auto.
Qué es Android Auto
Android Auto es la solución de Google para integrar nuestro dispositivo Android con nuestro vehículo compatible. Lleva funcionando desde el año 2014, y cuenta con una interfaz bastante simple e intuitiva, que se combina con acciones de voz que minimizan el contacto físico del conductor con el propio panel del vehículo.
Esta solución nos proporciona información sobre las notificaciones que recibimos, permite utilizar Google Maps, reproducir nuestra música, y responder mensajes mediante nuestra voz. El principal objetivo es el de poder interactuar con nuestro teléfono sin necesidad de tocarlo, minimizando las distracciones al volante.
Android Auto puede utilizarse desde el propio teléfono mediante su aplicación, aunque para sacarle el máximo partido es recomendable conectarlo al vehículo
Para utilizar Android Auto es necesario un vehículo o dispositivo compatible (Alpine, Pioneer o Sony tienen radios compatibles), así como disponer de un dispositivo Android con la versión 5.0 Lollipop y superiores. Teniendo dicha compatibilidad en el vehículo, tan solo hace falta descargar la aplicación de Android Auto y empezar a utilizarlo.
A la hora de realizar la conexión, podemos hacerlo de forma inalámbrica o mediante un cable USB que conecte tu móvil al coche. Android Auto funciona tanto en la interfaz de nuestro móvil, así como adaptándose al panel de nuestro coche.

Volkswagen Passat deixa de ser oferecido no Brasil
O Volkswagen Passat não é mais vendido no Brasil. O sedã, que tem o mesmo nome do hatch feito no País de 1974 a 1988, era importado da Alemanha. O modelo, que está na oitava geração, vem perdendo vendas no mundo inteiro por causa da mudança de comportamento do consumidor. As famílias estão trocando os sedãs pelos SUVs. Além disso, com o euro cotado em torno dos R$ 6,30, o carro perdeu competitividade. Seu preço sugerido era caro e quase encostava nos R$ 170 mil.
Mesmo com visual elegante e um bom motor 2.0 turbo de 220 cv de potência, o sedã da Volkswagen nunca foi bem aceito no mercado brasileiro e, com isso, vinha patinando em vendas. De janeiro a julho de 2020, foram emplacadas apenas 124 unidades. Para comparação, líder de licenciamentos do segmento no Brasil, o BMW 320 (parte de R$ 226.950) teve 2.176 vendas no mesmo período.
No ano passado inteiro, foram vendidas 1.048 unidades. E a queda do interesse do consumidor não está restrita ao Volkswagen Passat. O Honda Accord (R$ 224.900), por exemplo, que disputa o mesmo segmento, teve apenas 177 emplacamentos em 2019. O Toyota Camry (R$ 276.990) nem aparece na lista dos 12 mais vendidos.  Os dados são da Fenabrave, federação que reúne as associações de concessionárias instaladas no Brasil.
Até o Fusion, um médio grande considerado também como concorrente, sucumbiu à queda nas vendas. O sedã da Ford, que deixou de ser importado no fim do ano passado, acaba de sair de linha. O modelo, que custava entre R$ 149.990 e R$ 182.990, era feito no México e vendido em vários mercados, inclusive os Estados Unidos – até o último dia 31.
Trocado por um SUV
O motivo dessa aposentadoria é, justamente, dar espaço para a produção do Bronco Sport. Trata-se de um SUV médio que deve chegar ao Brasil no ano que vem. Ou seja, mesmo reunindo atributos como porta-malas generoso (514 litros) e soluções como opção de motorização híbrida, o modelo não conseguiu enfrentar o forte apelo dos utilitários esportivos, que vêm conquistando cada vez mais clientes com esportividade, tecnologia e até mais espaço que os três-volumes.
Por falar em espaço, esta continua sendo a cartada dos poucos sedãs que persistem no mercado. Para se ter ideia, o Camry transporta até 593 litros de bagagem no porta-malas. No Accord, esse espaço cai para 574 litros. Em relação a entre-eixos, ambos são generosos. Oferecem os mesmos 2,83 metros. Porém, enquanto o Honda se move com o auxílio do 2.0 turbo de 256 cv, a Toyota investiu num 3.5 V6 de 310 cv.
Passat brasileiro era igual ao Audi 80
Embora tenha o mesmo nome, cabe salientar que o modelo retirado da gama Volkswagen no Brasil nada tem a ver com o hatch fabricado por aqui no passado. O modelo da foto acima era baseado no Audi 80 (marca que também pertence ao Grupo VW).
Foi a partir do sedã da marca das quatro argolas que o renomado designer italiano Giorgetto Giugiaro conferiu ao Passat uma carroceria com perfil fastback. Lançado em meados de 1973 (1974 no Brasil), tinha versões com duas e quatro portas. A configuração perua, da primeira geração, não chegou a ser vendida por aqui.
Demais opções
Aliás, já importado – a partir da quarta geração, nos anos 1990 -, o Passat passou a comercializar a versão station wagon no País. Mas a falta de interesse da clientela acabou por encerrar sua comercialização há cinco anos.
Foi, justamente, nessa época que o Passat de oitava geração desembarcou no Brasil. O sedã ainda passou por mudanças visuais na Europa em fevereiro de 2019. Porém, o mercado local não acompanhou a atualização.
De acordo com a Volkswagen, as últimas unidades à venda do Passat Highline ainda estão disponíveis em algumas concessionárias do País. Mas é pouco provável que o consumidor cogite a compra do estoque, afinal, a empresa oferece modelos como Jetta GLI (R$ 165.490) e Tiguan R-Line (R$ 208.590), que têm conjunto mecânico semelhante e melhor relação custo-benefício. Ambos são importados do México, o que facilita até mesmo o pós-vendas.

Peugeot Is Coming Back, But What Will Its Lineup Look Like?
So, Peugeot is coming back to America. Which cars and SUVs will it bring? It’s an interesting question made even more so by the fact that by 2016, when CEO Carlos Tavares first announced PSA Peugeot Citroën’s intention to return to the United States and Canada, the company was starting to engineer its latest models so as to avoid any major tear-up to adapt them to U.S. safety and emissions regulations.
Peugeot has redesigned most of its lineup since then, and the parent company already has begun certifying models for sale here, which is a long, tedious, and costly process. The automaker’s first product is already in America in the form of its car-sharing program called Free2Move, which has already launched in Washington, D.C. without any of PSA’s own models.
Next up, expect Tavares and North American PSA president Larry Dominique to announce timing of the return here, which is promised before 2026. If the reintroduction of Peugeot—it last sold cars in the U.S. in 1991—is at the latter end of its stated 10-year timeframe (the clock started ticking in 2016), most current Peugeot car and crossover SUV models probably will have been replaced with all-new versions. If the return is early in the ’20s, most existing models would only need mid-cycle refreshes.
Which Peugeots are likely to come to U.S. and Canadian dealerships? Here are my best guesses, beginning with the most-likely models:
E-Legend
This retro design EV concept premiered at the 2018 Paris show, with styling based on the lovely Pininfarina-designed 504 coupe that made its debut at the 1969 Geneva Motor Show. The Paris car is powered by two electric motors producing 456 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. Peugeot claims a sub-four-second zero-to-62-mph time and a range of 370 miles for this Tesla fighter. If it reaches production, it’s a no-brainer for U.S. import and would serve as Peugeot’s performance and style icon, while also helping fulfill California’s zero-emissions mandate.

At 175.1 inches long, on a 105.3-inch wheelbase, the Peugeot 3008 is on the small side within the booming compact SUV segment. The also smallish Hyundai Tucson is 1.3 inches longer than the Pug, and its wheelbase is 0.2 inch shorter, for comparison. The problem with this SUV and most compact and smaller Peugeot models is that they’re powered by engines inappropriate for the U.S. market. In the U.K., it comes with either a 1.2-liter gasoline three-cylinder, or a 1.5-liter diesel four. Considering the ongoing diesel issues in the States, expect the French automaker to send us either gasoline four-cylinder engines, pure electrics like the E-Legend, and perhaps hybrid or plug-in-hybrid powertrains in the works using the 1.2-liter engine. Midsize Peugeots come with a 1.6-liter gasoline four, and I expect it to be the base engine for compact models coming to the U.S. The 3008, which is in the middle of Peugeot’s SUV range, is its most technologically advanced crossover, with 3D navigation, Apple CarPlay, a 180-degree backup camera, enhanced parking assist, a smart electronic tailgate, and a panoramic sunroof.
508 Fastback
An all-new midsize flagship sedan launched in Europe last year, the 508 is 187.0-inches long, on a 110.0-inch wheelbase, featuring handsome fastback styling that’s not to be confused with Mercedes-Benz CLS-class-like “four-door coupes.” Its gasoline engine options include a 1.6-liter four-cylinder rated 181 for horsepower and 184 lb-ft, although the 308 GTi Sport’s 205-hp version of the engine (see below) is more likely. Peugeot may be working on a higher-displacement version of this gas four, or a turbocharged version for our market. Like most other Peugeot models, the 508 is sold in the U.K. in trim levels starting with Active, and matriculating north through Allure, GT Line, and GT, and I’d expect the two top trim levels for the U.S., three at most. There’s also an all-new 508 wagon, although this body style has very limited appeal in the U.S., even when raised slightly and outfitted with cladding and all-wheel drive.

Peugeot’s three-row SUV is barely midsize at 182.7 inches long, and the French automaker may choose to sell it here with only two rows to compete with such models as the Chevrolet Blazer and the Ford Edge. There’s a conventional six-speed manual available on this car, but you can almost certainly forget that, too—the additional cost of emissions certification, somewhere in the $1 to $2 million range, would not be worth it for sales in the thousands, if that many.
Market Position
Peugeot’s bigger cars, executive sedans like the C-/D-segment 508, have long been positioned in France and Western Europe as semi-premium models. When Peugeot returns, it will come here in relatively low volumes and nibble at such marques as Volkswagen, Mazda, and perhaps Subaru, and we’ll only get the higher trim levels with their more profitable margins. I think Peugeot’s cars will be positioned to strike at the upper ends of those rival brands and could perhaps even take on entry-level Volvos, Audis, and Acuras. The Peugeot 308 and 308 GTi would take on VW’s Golf and GTI and the Mazda 3; the 508 would target the VW Passat and Arteon, and perhaps upper-trim Honda Accords and Toyota Camrys; and the 3008 might aim at the Mazda CX-5 and perhaps even the Volvo XC40.

If you scan the headlines, SUVs and crossovers are taking over and the sedan is dead. But CarGurus data shows the story is more complicated than that: Younger shoppers still want new and used sedans, because they offer more value and are still great options. But most American automakers have nixed sedans, with the exception of performance vehicles. European automakers continue to make sedans, such as the 2020 Volkswagen Passat, which offer more premium features and design elements, such as heated front and rear seats and dual-zone climate control. But what of the wagon? Let’s take a closer look at some recent debuts.
The wagon comeback
In the past two years, we’ve seen the introduction of several new wagons. Volvo, which already had the V60, debuted the new V90 in 2017 (a previous version was offered in the US in 1998), which we reviewed the 2018. Shoppers can now get an off-road friendly version of the V90, called the V90 Cross Country, which offers more ground clearance, black cladding around the wheels, and, of course, all-wheel drive (AWD). Jaguar, known for its luxury sedans like the XJ Series, broke tradition and introduced the XF Sportbrake in 2018. Its starting price is in line with the rest of the luxury brand’s vehicles, and it offers 20-inch wheels, soft-close doors, heated seats, and more cubic feet of cargo space than the F-Pace.

Volkswagen and Audi Timing Chain Settlement Recall and Repair Reimbursement Information
Attention, you may be entitled to up to $6,500 and time is running out! Volkswagen and Audi owners and leasers can get reimbursed for specific repairs made on certain vehicles between 2008 and 2014. Discover if your vehicle qualifies and how to start a claim.

Timing Chain Settlement and Eligibility Details
On June 14, 2018, the Court granted preliminary approval for the Volkswagen timing chain settlement known as “In Re Volkswagen Timing Chain Product Liability Litigation, Civil Action No. 16-2765 (JLL)(JAD).”
This settlement addresses these parts:
• Timing chain failure and/or • Timing chain tensioner failure and/or • Engine replacement as a result of the failure of a timing chain or timing chain tensioner.
Eligible Class of drivers:
Anyone who purchased or leased one of a specific model of Volkswagen and Audi vehicles either in the United States or Puerto Rico manufactured between 2008 and 2014.

Volkswagen Payment Terms, Warranties, and Limitations
For qualified vehicles, warranties on timing chains and timing chain tensioners have been extended by Volkswagen to 10 years or 100,000 miles.

Toyota Camry Euro Spec In Paris Is An Overdue Avensis Replacement
It will be available in Western Europe exclusively as a hybrid.
The Avensis never really made a name for itself in Europe’s crowded midsize segment, being overshadowed by far more popular models such as the Opel/Vauxhall Insignia, Skoda Superb, Ford Mondeo, and of course – the Volkswagen Passat. Toyota is now attempting to recover lost ground by reintroducing the Camry in Western Europe after an absence of 14 years.
Based on the eighth generation of the D/E-sedan, the 2019 Camry in European specification has a much more interesting design inside and out compared to the defunct Avensis. On the old continent, it’s going to be offered exclusively with a hybrid powertrain featuring an electrified 2.5-liter engine producing a more than decent 215 horsepower.
See its North American cousin:
Being a naturally aspirated engine, torque isn’t that great, at 163 pound-feet (221 Newton-meters), but it should be adequate for people looking for a no-frills sedan. The 0 to 62 mph (100 kph) task will take 8.3 seconds en route to a top speed of 112 mph (180 kph), but the car is not about performance. The Camry Hybrid aims to be one of the most fuel-efficient models in its class, sipping just 4.2 liters / 100 km on average and emitting only 98 g/km of CO2.
Originally introduced last year, the newest Camry rides on the company’s Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform shared with the latest Corolla, Prius, C-HR, and RAV4. This particular version of the Camry has been tweaked to better cater European tastes and help the model maintain its top spot worldwide in the D/E-segment sedan with more than 700,000 units sold each year. Toyota has delivered more than 19 million examples since the Camry’s launch in the late 1970s / early 1980s.
There’s not much to say about styling since it mimics that of the North American model inside and out. The Camry Hybrid for Europe has a pretty decent 524-liter trunk that should prove to be enough for most families, although many of its rivals are also offered as wagons for those with more luggage to carry around during longer trips.
Following its public debut this week at the Paris Motor Show, the 2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid will go on sale in Western Europe in the first quarter of next year.

A slim and deep upper grille emphasises the Toyota emblem and incorporates thin Hi-LED headlamp clusters at its extremities.
The large, trapezoidal lower grille occupies almost the full width of the bumper area. Only the bumper side corners remain, sandwiching the grille in a manner reminiscent of the twin hulls of a catamaran and emphasising the wide track and broad, purposeful stance of the new Camry Hybrid.
The lower grille itself features horizontal bars which have been meticulously crafted to strengthen the visual power of the Catamaran Under Priority design and add both aggression and prestige to the wide, low frontal styling.
In profile, the low bonnet and roofline combine with a low belt line to give the appearance of a cabin pulled downwards into the body, visually lowering the new Camry’s centre of gravity even further.
The cabin combines an extended roofline to ensure occupant comfort with compact side glazing that fits within the wheelbase to create a uniquely stylish, sporting appearance.
The rear half of the cabin tapers inwards, tucked between the broad, protruding shoulders of the rear wheel arches. Below, bumper-enveloping ‘aero’ corners flow from all-LED tail lamp clusters to further emphasise the new Camry’s wide, dynamic stance.
ERGONOMIC AND PREMIUM CABIN SPACE
The interior of the new Camry has been designed to offer a carefully considered fusion of function, style and craftsmanship.
The sensuous curves of the new dashboard combine an ergonomically ideal, driver-focused cockpit environment with spacious, comfortable passenger accommodation. Together, the seamless component layout, painstakingly crafted textures and consistency in the use of materials create a cabin of outstanding quality and prestige.
The audio system, air-conditioning control panel and 8” infotainment system screen have been fully integrated into the completely flush, piano black surface of the centre console with no gaps between the controls.
The new Camry’s Human Machine Interface (HMI) features a trio of easy-to-read, information coordinating displays consisting of: a high visibility, colour, 10” Head-up Display (HUD) ; a 7” in-meter Multi-information Display; and an 8” centre console display incorporating the latest version of Toyota’s Touch® 2 multimedia system.
The switchgear has been completely redesigned for improved functionality, appearance and tactility. All controls have been carefully shaped and ergonomically optimised, including the high-quality satin metallic switches. Seamless texture and finish quality throughout the instrument panel epitomises the Camry’s high levels of interior precision.
Virtually every surface of the spacious, opulent cabin is finished in high-quality soft-touch padding, supple leather, elegant wood grain mouldings or a lustrous, newly developed satin chrome trim. A new Tiger Eye ornamentation trim is available, offering a sense of depth and shine that varies with the viewing angle in the manner of the tiger’s eye gemstone.
With a choice of leather or fabric upholstery, the new Camry Hybrid interior is available in two colour schemes: Beige (leather) -which combines a dark grey carpet and upper dashboard with two shades of beige; and Black (fabric or leather) -which highlights the interior’s new satin chrome accents.
In response to the enhanced levels of handling agility delivered by the new GA-K platform, the front seats have been redesigned to offer high comfort and great lateral holding ability for less fatigue.
Replicating the design of the front seats, rear accommodation is available in two formats; 60:40 split foldable seats, and 40:20:40 split power reclining seats with wide headrests and a large rear seat centre armrest for enhanced comfort.
The power reclining seat format is available with a capacitive touch control panel built into the front of the centre armrest, allowing for the rear seat operation of the air conditioning, audio system, and seat reclining controls.
Finally, the adoption of a new rear double wishbone suspension system reduces shock absorber incursion into the loadspace of the new Camry, enabling luggage capacity of 524 litres.
NEW 2.5 LITRE HYBRID ELECTRIC POWERTRAIN
The new Camry Hybrid’s 2.5 litre self-charging hybrid powertrain combines fuel efficiency, low emissions and quiet operation with more power and greater responsiveness.
Delivering 160 kW/218 DIN hp, Camry Hybrid generates CO2emissions as low as 98 g/km and returns combined fuel consumption of only 4.2 l/100 km1.
Providing high power output with smooth and highly refined operation, the new 2.5 liter four-cylinder Dynamic Force Engine boasts world-class top level maximum thermal efficiency of 41%.
It incorporates an array of Toyota’s most advanced technologies including Dual VVT-i with VVT-iE (Variable Valve Timing intelligent system by Electric motor) and D-4S (Direct injection 4-stroke gasoline engine Superior version) for optimal power production, emissions performance and fuel efficiency.
The new Toyota Hybrid System (THS II) includes new Sequential Shiftmatic technology that allows the driver to ‘shift’ with the console-mounted lever, mimicking a quick-shifting six-speed automatic transmission, for spirited performance and driving enjoyment.
ENGAGING DRIVING DYNAMICS
Key to the new Camry’s enhanced dynamic abilities and superior ride quality is its all-new, TNGA-based GA-K platform. Key ingredients to ensure an engaging drive are increased torsional rigidity, a new rear-double wishbone suspension and a significantly lowered centre of gravity.
The lightweight, highly rigid bodyshell offers a substantial 30% increase in torsional rigidity over the previous model. While a newly developed, four-point engine mounting system has been designed to not only dramatically reduce engine vibration, but also further increase the Camry’s rigidity and handling stability.
New suspension consisting of a MacPherson strut configuration at the front and a new double wishbone layout at the rear has been engineered to not only give superior stability and flatter cornering to inspire driver confidence, but also to deliver a premium ride quality that surpasses that of other vehicles in its class.
Last but not least, the GA-K platform is designed to achieve a low centre of gravity which results in a more engaging driving position, and more precise and responsive handling with less body roll. As a result, the overall vehicle height and bonnet height have been reduced, and the cabin floor has been lowered.
INCREASED LEVELS OF SAFETY
New Camry Hybrid is equipped with a wide range of active and passive safety features.
All models come as standard with ‘Toyota Safety Sense’, a set of active safety technologies designed to help prevent or mitigate collisions across a wide range of traffic situations.
Combining a camera and millimetre-wave radar for a high level of detection performance, the new Camry’s Toyota Safety Sense system features a Pre-Collision System (PCS) with a Pedestrian Detection function, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with steering assist, Automatic High Beam (AHB) and Road Sign Assist (RSA) technology.
Further driver support and safety enhancing systems include a Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), front and rear corner clearance sonar, a Back Monitor with parking guidelines, and a full suite of brake and traction control systems.
The Camry’s body structure has been designed to absorb front, side and rear impacts, dispersing collision energy to help prevent deformation of the high-strength cabin area.
While the use of a newly developed, ‘floating-island’ bonnet inner structure and a cowl louvre impact absorbing structure contributes to first class pedestrian protection performance.

First-Half U.S. 2018 Auto Sales Are Down Slightly from Last Year
How to handle General Motors’ move to quarterly U.S. auto sales reports? It’s the number-one automaker in the country, and will likely lead others to do the same over the next year.
But most of GM’s rivals list monthly numbers, and year-to-date numbers, and I could never get this web column out in time if I had to add up the last three months’ numbers for every other automaker and its individual models. So from now on, this column will compare cumulative sales for the year. This column compares numbers for the first half of the year, for everyone, and the percentage change, up/down, is compared with sales for the first half of 2017.
Next report will be in October, comparing sales for the first three quarters of the year, and after that comes the annual sales report, which will be in January 2019.
I’ve covered car sales for more than a decade, first at motortrend.com, because I think good knowledge of what cars and trucks people are buying can give you a good hint at what automakers will be building within the next five years. It’s also a reminder that sports cars, and the proverbial diesel stick-shift station wagon, are for enthusiasts and not for the mass markets. We have to hope that automakers that still build sports cars are selling sufficient amounts of compact sport/utilities to fund enthusiasts’ favorites.
Toyota says the Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate is running in the high 16-million range, down from the low 17s of a year ago.
And so, to the numbers …
1. General Motors: 1,474,170, up 4.2 percent.
Chevrolet division was up 5.2 percent, to 1,019,019, with Silverado accounting for 291,074, up 10.7 percent, and Suburban at 29,861, up 19.9 percent. Tahoe sales for the first half were 50,523, up 12.3 percent.
Equinox is Chevy’s second-bestseller, and was up 17.2 percent, to 156,365. Among Chevy sedans, Cruze, at 77,691, off 26.1 percent, narrowly outsold Malibu, off 8.9 percent, to 76,417.
Among Green Chevys, Bolt, at 7,858, up 3.5 percent, edged out Volt, off 28.5 percent, to 7,814. Corvette plunged 25.3 percent, to 10,242. GMC was up 2.4 percent, to 269,507, with Sierra up 1.7 percent, to 100,874, and Yukon/XL up 1.1 percent, to 34,522. Acadia was off 10.7 percent, to 50,008.
Buick sales for the half dropped 0.6 percent, to 109,659. Encore was its bestseller, up 14.9 percent, to 48,635. Encore was next, up 15.3 percent, to 48,635. Envision was off 25.7 percent, to 16,814 and the new Regal, including the TourX, spiked by 26.7 percent, to 8,215.
Cadillac sales moved up 5.4 percent, to 75,949, led by bestseller XT5, up 7 percent, to 31,890. XTS was the biggest gainer, up 16.2 percent, to 8,563. Escalade was up 4 percent, to 17,766, and brand icon CT6 was off 9.3 percent, to 4,894.
2. Ford Motor Company: 1,277,691, off 1.8 percent.
Divisional split was 1,227,422 for Ford, off 1.4 percent, and 50,269 for Lincoln, down 10.8 percent.
Ford’s F-Series pickup was up 4.9 percent for the half, to 451,138, a 59,190-unit lead over the Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra combo.
Ford Mustang leads #PonyCarWars, at 42,428, off 4.9 percent, and with Dodge Challenger, at 37,367, up 4 percent. Chevy Camaro dropped 30.6 percent for the half, to 25,380.
Ford Expedition was down 10.2 percent, to 27,934, while Lincoln Navigator spiked up 82.4 percent, to 9,115.

3. Toyota Motor Sales: 1,189,312, up 3 percent.
Toyota Division sales for the half rose 3.2 percent, to 1,054,312 as Lexus edged up 0.9 percent, to 135,000.
Toyota says its Camry remains the bestselling car in the U.S., up 1.1 percent, to 178,795. RAV4 sales were stronger, though, up 7.4 percent, to 198,392.
Corolla was off 8.5 percent, to 161,462 and Prius was off 16.2 percent, to 46,171.
Tundra sales for the half was up 4 percent, to 55,792, and Tacoma was up 22.9 percent, to 116,266.
Lexus remains the RX brand, as first-half sales for that SUV rose 7.1 percent, to 50,051, including the new three-row RX L. NX was up 10.2 percent, to 28,672.
Lexus ES was off 8.7 percent, to 19,901, in the midst of a model changeover.
Lexus LS sales surged 135.5 percent with the new model, to 4,369.
4. Fiat Chrysler: 1,115,476, up 5 percent.
Jeep, Jeep, it’s all-Jeep. Sales of the brand jumped 22 percent, to 495,022. Even Ram was off 7 percent for the half, to 260,341.
Dodge fell 4 percent, to 250,933, Chrysler dropped 13 percent, to 88,630, and Fiat plunged 44 percent, to 8,285. Alfa Romeo was up 230 percent, but that was to just 12,265.
Jeep sold 35-percent more Wranglers in the first half of ’18, versus the first half of ’17, to 133,492. Cherokee was up 40 percent, to 113,719 and Grand Cherokee dipped 6 percent, to 109.313.
Jeep Compass was up 240 percent, to 87,510, while Renegade fell 5 percent, to 50,439.
Ram pickup fell 7 percent, to 233,539, in the midst of a model changeover.
Chrysler Pacifica sales rose 6 percent, to 63,024, as 300 was off 13 percent, to 24,707.
Dodge Charger was off 4 percent (see #PonyCarWars under Ford sales for Challenger), to 41,406 and Journey was down 8 percent, to 52,309.
Dodge sold 14 Vipers, down 97 percent.
Fiat 500X was down 19 percent, to 3,225, as 500 fell 70 percent, to 2,262, and 124 Spider dropped 24 percent, to 1,894.
Alfa’s Giulia, up 83 percent, to 6,362, outsold the new Stelvio, which posted 5,769 sales for the first half.
5. American Honda, 787,824, off 0.5 percent.
Honda was off 0.4 percent, to 715,171 and Acura was off 1.6 percent, to 72,653.
Honda CR-V led Accord and Civic, off 4.1 percent, to 179,580.
The expanded Civic lineup was up 0.3 percent, to 176,242.
Accord was down 13.6 percent, to 138,290.
RDX led Acura sales, up 8.1 percent, to 27,322. MDX was off 7 percent, to 21,900. TLX was off 11.4 percent, to 16,890.
6. Nissan Group: 780,695, off 4.8 percent.
Nissan division was off 4.3 percent, to 708,525 and Infiniti was off 8.8 percent, to 72,170.
Rogue was up 10 percent, to 215,202.
Nissan Altima was off 15.4 percent, to 123,792, and Sentra was up 2.8 percent, to 115,676.
Nissan Leaf sales fell 8.1 percent, to 6,659.
QX60 led Infiniti sales, up 21.3 percent, to 22,176, while Q50 was next, off 2.3 percent, to 19,157.
7. Hyundai: 335,048, off 3.3 percent.
Hyundai brand was off 2.6 percent, to 327,786 and Genesis was down 26.7 percent, to 7,262.
The Elantra compact sedan remains Hyundai’s bestseller, by far, though off 0.5 percent, to 99,728.
Tucson was up 35.3 percent, to 69,949. Santa Fe slipped 1.4 percent, to 59,185.
The electrified Ionics had a good half, up 76.2 percent, to 8,599. Hyundai has sold 15,193 Konas, year-to-date.
Genesis G80 was down 26.2 percent, to 5,646, and G90 was off 28.3 percent, to 1,616.
8. Subaru: 322,860, up 5.9 percent.
Outback is bestseller, up 5.5 percent to 90,978.
Forester was off 9.9 percent, to 79,277, while Crosstrek was up 71.1 percent, to 74,475.
WRX/STI was off 7.1 percent, to 15,038. BRZ was down 14.4 percent, to 1,966.
9. Kia: 293,563, off 0.7 percent.
Forte led sales, off 7.4 percent to 54,400, with Sorento up 5 percent, to 52,760.
Soul was off 5.8 percent, to 50,032.
Niro was up 12 percent, to 14,203, and outsold Hyundai Ionics by 5,604.
K900 was down 30.3 percent, to 175, but Kia sold 8,638 of its new Stingers.
10. Mercedes-Benz USA: 176,408, off 1.9 percent.
Slipping sales this year place Mercedes plus vans and smart just 386 units ahead of BMW at the halfway point. The Mercedes brand, excluding vans, was off 1.9 percent, to 158,848.
GLC-Class leads, up 78.2 percent, to 35,145. C-Class sales fell 30.3 percent, to 29,659.
GLE was off 15.2 percent, to 22,741, and GLA was up 17.4 percent, to 12,162, while E-Class/CLS dropped 5.3 percent, to 23,440.
CLA-Class was up 37.9 percent, to 11,716.
S-Class was up 11.1 percent, to 8,425.
Vans were up 7 percent, to 16,910 and Smart brand plummeted 67.2 percent, to just 650 cars in the first half of the year.
11. BMW Group: 176,022, up 2.8 percent.
BMW brand was up 2.9 percent, to 153,386. Mini was up 1.9 percent, to 22,636.
Three models all were in the 24k range. X3 was up 1.6 percent, to 24,750, X5 was off 0.9 percent, to 24,376 and 3 Series was off 12.7 percent, to 24,180.
The 4 Series, which has outsold 3 Series in certain months, was down 22.6 percent, to 15,758.
Countryman led Mini sales, up 48.6 percent to 9,459. The Cooper/S Hardtop 2 Door was off 10.8 percent, to 4,861.
12. Volkswagen: 172,898, up 7.2 percent.
VW’s second-half of ’18 success is all thanks to the new Tiguan and Atlas SUVs.
VW sold 28,158 Atlases, up from 4,023 as production began early in ’17.
It sold 46,102 of its new Tiguans and 9,293 Tiguan Limiteds, up 226 percent versus the old Tiguans last year.
All major car lines were down. Jetta was off 40.5 percent, to 33,023, Passat fell 36.4 percent, to 22,356, Golf was down 36.6 percent, to 24,257 and Beetle was off 9.7 percent, to 7967.
13. Mazda: 163,924, up 15.7 percent.
The CX-5 compact SUV is a runaway hit, up 40.1 percent for the half, to 81,012. It outsold the VW Atlas and ’18 Tiguan, combined, by 6,752.
MX-5 Miata was off 32.7 percent, to 4,691.
CX-9 was up 21.5 percent, to 14,716, and CX-3 was up 26.5 percent, to 9,627.
Mazda3 was off 10.1 percent, to 35,796.
14. Audi: 107,942, up 4.8 percent.
Q5 was up 12 percent, to 28,951, outselling VW Atlas by 793.
Q7 was up 6 percent to 17,763, and Q3 was up 17 percent, to 10,636.
A4 was off 1 percent to 18,397, while A5 was up 102 percent to 13,592. A3 slipped 22 percent, to 9,731.
15. Mitsubishi: 67,327, up 23.4 percent.
On track to eclipse the 100k mark this year, Mitsubishi is led by Outlander, up 30.6 percent, to 23,506. Outlander Sport was up 48.8 percent, to 22,415.
Mitsubishi sold 2,966 Eclipse Crosses in the first half of the year.
Mirage was off 3.7 percent, to 13,185.
16. Jaguar/Land Rover: 59,566, up 5 percent.
Jaguar is off 28 percent for the year so far, to 14,787, while Land Rover is up 25 percent, to 44,779.
The Land Rover Range Rover is of 2 percent, to 9,438, but 8,812 new Velars were sold in the first half. F-Pace is off 24 percent, to 7,252, while the new E-Pace claimed 1,426 sales.
XE was off 48 percent, to 2,663 and F-Type was off 47 percent, to 1,219.
17. Volvo: 47,622, up 39.6 percent.
The XC90 still leads the marque’s sales, at 15,974, up 32.8 percent.
The XC60 was next, up 66 percent to 14,790, of which 14,551 were the new model.
Volvo sold 5,098 XC40s in the first half.
V90 sales were 182, up 1,200 percent, but the CC version was up 26.9 percent, to 1,131.
18. Porsche: 29,421, up 6.7 percent.
Macan led at 11,650, up 9.5 percent.
Cayenne was of 25.3 percent, to 5,275, while 911 was up 10.8 percent, to 4,871.

24 Hours with a 2019 Volkswagen Passat R-Line.
I am no stranger to the rental desk, some of my friends and colleagues think I am extremely strange because I randomly like to rent cars for longer road trips, and since my Explorer is old and tired its been retired to city only duty, anything inside of my AAA towing range is fair game.
Whenever I need to go visit family across the state, or plan a road trip I now just rent a full size car through Avis, the company I work for offers a significant discount code that can be used for work or personal, so I end up with a full size for under $30/day anywhere in the world. Partner this to a $30 coupon code I also happened to get from Avis last year, and I ended up with the option of renting a full size car for $3.14 for the day (taxes and fees). Who wouldn't?
Normally, I rent from airports, but there happens to be a hire desk down the street from my workplace, so I set a reservation on a Friday afternoon and dropped by Sunday morning. There were two people on line in front of me, and the single gentleman behind the desk did an excellent job of addressing everybody in order and making sure he knew what was going on. While I waited I surveyed the parking lot for every full size car they had, I have learned if I know what they have on the lot, its easier to schoomze my way into the car of my choice, and in a few cases have gotten some upgrades. On this particular day there was a 2017 Toyota Camry, a 2018 Nissan Altima, and a 2019 Volkswagen Passat R-Line. Now, I have rented a Passat before, and wrote about it extensively on a road trip to Yosemite and back on one tank of fuel when I was living in Northern California for a summer. But I hadn't tried out the R-Line before, and this model had a new engine for this year, or I should say its actually a de-tuned carry over of the 2.0T Found in pretty much everything VAG makes.
This new engine makes 174 Horsepower and and 184 Ft-lbs of torque. Initially when I picked the car up I assumed it had come with the old 1.8T that I already had experience with, but after a very short amount of driving I felt a significant difference in behavior.
The old 1.8T had tons of torque down low, and a very mute dead spot that was actually very hard to catch in most situations, the torque was great for anything below about 5000 RPM, but it started running out of puff beyond this. This new 2.0T unit had a completely opposite personality. There is a significant dead spot between 2000 and 3000 RPM that when taking off in a hurry actually made for a noticeable delay in power, then it all rushes in at 3000, revs consistently till 5000, then it takes off again up to redline.
This is very out of character for any VAG product I have experienced in the recent past, almost every car I have driven has consistent torque and power bands with only a short flat spot at low RPM because of the turbocharger spooling, this new engine feels peaky, it feels like it has a personality.
Partner this to the old 6 speed auto that VW has used for over a decade, the R-Line package doesn't change much about the performance of the car, it does offer larger 19 inch wheels with fatter tires, a body appearance package with Piano black and chrome grills, body cladding, an interior tech package with CarPlay and Android Auto, along with something that surprised me; Adaptive cruise control. This I had never had experience with, so I was excited to try it out.
The 6 speed auto seems to be more lazy than I remember, I recall with an old 1.4T Jetta and the 1.8T Passat I had rented, there was very little delay with tiptronic shifts, and even though the R-Line Passat ads the GTI style steering wheel with paddle shifters, the upshifts seem much more delayed, especially 1 to 2, I could feel a significant window when the gear would disengage, then the next would engage, but this would only happen in tip-tronic mode, if I put it in sport and let it shift automatically it was damned near as quick as a DSG, which I felt was odd.
I drove the Passat 300 miles to visit family, and on 87 octane fuel it achieved an average of 33 MPG. I expected more as the 1.8T model I had rented I was able to do 800 miles round trip on one tank of fuel, and averaged 42 MPG, mind you I was driving in Northern California, so I had a lot more hills, and lower speed back roads to help out with my average, but I wasn't hyper mileing in either car. the 2.0T seems to be just as quick, but less fuel efficient, also this is with winter fuel, so additives may be effecting averages as well. Steering feel was numb when going slowly and very sharp when going fast, typical of VW electric power steering.
The adaptive cruise control was weird at first, there is 6 settings for distance and a setting for speed, so far as I could tell if I was going faster than the car in front of me, it would catch up to the car, leave a significant distance between myself and the next car, and match its speed identically. in a few situations I could feel the brakes automatically engage as well when the car in front of me would significantly slow down. At first it was discomforting, then it became completely 2nd nature, it completely disarmed me from worrying about what the car in front of me was doing. So I started having to be cognizant to make a pass when possible so I didn't turn my brain off.
The thing I liked was that as soon as I turned my indicator on and tried to lane change, the ACC would see a free lane and would start accelerating back to my preset speed as soon as I started the lane change. No harsh downshifts, no jerkiness, just smooth power.
The seats felt identical to every modern VAG product, dating back to my old 2010 Jetta, sitting down in it felt like I was back in my old VW, very supportive of every part of my back, legs and buttocks, a long journey could easily be done in them, and the back seat was enormous.
My biggest qualm cam in the form of the trunk, I needed to do a grocery store run prior to my road trip, and I had a few garbage bags filled with bottles and cans. The trunk was huge, but it was damned near impossible to stuff the garbage bags in the opening to the trunk, and I couldn't help but think "this car would be perfect if it were a wagon" Why offer such a huge trunk if you have such a limitation of what can go into the opening?
Overall, this car is a solid 8/10 in terms of daily driver status, it was quick enough to have fun it, offered plenty of room for passengers front and back with comfortable seating surfaces, acceptable fuel economy and performance, a refined and smooth/quiet engine, and had all of the perfect modern features and ergonomics one might want in any modern car. The unfortunate part about this is that the Passat is a very handsome and conservative car, it has aged quite gracefully but it is overdue for a refresh, and it doesn't feel like that is going to happen any time soon.

First-Half U.S. 2018 Auto Sales Are Down Slightly from Last Year
How to handle General Motors’ move to quarterly U.S. auto sales reports? It’s the number-one automaker in the country, and will likely lead others to do the same over the next year.
But most of GM’s rivals list monthly numbers, and year-to-date numbers, and I could never get this web column out in time if I had to add up the last three months’ numbers for every other automaker and its individual models. So from now on, this column will compare cumulative sales for the year. This column compares numbers for the first half of the year, for everyone, and the percentage change, up/down, is compared with sales for the first half of 2017.
Next report will be in October, comparing sales for the first three quarters of the year, and after that comes the annual sales report, which will be in January 2019.
I’ve covered car sales for more than a decade, first at motortrend.com, because I think good knowledge of what cars and trucks people are buying can give you a good hint at what automakers will be building within the next five years. It’s also a reminder that sports cars, and the proverbial diesel stick-shift station wagon, are for enthusiasts and not for the mass markets. We have to hope that automakers that still build sports cars are selling sufficient amounts of compact sport/utilities to fund enthusiasts’ favorites.
Toyota says the Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate is running in the high 16-million range, down from the low 17s of a year ago.
And so, to the numbers …
1. General Motors: 1,474,170, up 4.2 percent.
Chevrolet division was up 5.2 percent, to 1,019,019, with Silverado accounting for 291,074, up 10.7 percent, and Suburban at 29,861, up 19.9 percent. Tahoe sales for the first half were 50,523, up 12.3 percent.
Equinox is Chevy’s second-bestseller, and was up 17.2 percent, to 156,365. Among Chevy sedans, Cruze, at 77,691, off 26.1 percent, narrowly outsold Malibu, off 8.9 percent, to 76,417.
Among Green Chevys, Bolt, at 7,858, up 3.5 percent, edged out Volt, off 28.5 percent, to 7,814. Corvette plunged 25.3 percent, to 10,242. GMC was up 2.4 percent, to 269,507, with Sierra up 1.7 percent, to 100,874, and Yukon/XL up 1.1 percent, to 34,522. Acadia was off 10.7 percent, to 50,008.
Buick sales for the half dropped 0.6 percent, to 109,659. Encore was its bestseller, up 14.9 percent, to 48,635. Encore was next, up 15.3 percent, to 48,635. Envision was off 25.7 percent, to 16,814 and the new Regal, including the TourX, spiked by 26.7 percent, to 8,215.
Cadillac sales moved up 5.4 percent, to 75,949, led by bestseller XT5, up 7 percent, to 31,890. XTS was the biggest gainer, up 16.2 percent, to 8,563. Escalade was up 4 percent, to 17,766, and brand icon CT6 was off 9.3 percent, to 4,894.

Divisional split was 1,227,422 for Ford, off 1.4 percent, and 50,269 for Lincoln, down 10.8 percent.
Ford’s F-Series pickup was up 4.9 percent for the half, to 451,138, a 59,190-unit lead over the Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra combo.
Ford Mustang leads #PonyCarWars, at 42,428, off 4.9 percent, and with Dodge Challenger, at 37,367, up 4 percent. Chevy Camaro dropped 30.6 percent for the half, to 25,380.

GLE was off 15.2 percent, to 22,741, and GLA was up 17.4 percent, to 12,162, while E-Class/CLS dropped 5.3 percent, to 23,440.
CLA-Class was up 37.9 percent, to 11,716.
S-Class was up 11.1 percent, to 8,425.
Vans were up 7 percent, to 16,910 and Smart brand plummeted 67.2 percent, to just 650 cars in the first half of the year.
11. BMW Group: 176,022, up 2.8 percent.
BMW brand was up 2.9 percent, to 153,386. Mini was up 1.9 percent, to 22,636.
Three models all were in the 24k range. X3 was up 1.6 percent, to 24,750, X5 was off 0.9 percent, to 24,376 and 3 Series was off 12.7 percent, to 24,180.
The 4 Series, which has outsold 3 Series in certain months, was down 22.6 percent, to 15,758.
Countryman led Mini sales, up 48.6 percent to 9,459. The Cooper/S Hardtop 2 Door was off 10.8 percent, to 4,861.
12. Volkswagen: 172,898, up 7.2 percent.
VW’s second-half of ’18 success is all thanks to the new Tiguan and Atlas SUVs.
VW sold 28,158 Atlases, up from 4,023 as production began early in ’17.
It sold 46,102 of its new Tiguans and 9,293 Tiguan Limiteds, up 226 percent versus the old Tiguans last year.
All major car lines were down. Jetta was off 40.5 percent, to 33,023, Passat fell 36.4 percent, to 22,356, Golf was down 36.6 percent, to 24,257 and Beetle was off 9.7 percent, to 7967.
13. Mazda: 163,924, up 15.7 percent.
The CX-5 compact SUV is a runaway hit, up 40.1 percent for the half, to 81,012. It outsold the VW Atlas and ’18 Tiguan, combined, by 6,752.
MX-5 Miata was off 32.7 percent, to 4,691.
CX-9 was up 21.5 percent, to 14,716, and CX-3 was up 26.5 percent, to 9,627.
Mazda3 was off 10.1 percent, to 35,796.
14. Audi: 107,942, up 4.8 percent.
Q5 was up 12 percent, to 28,951, outselling VW Atlas by 793.
Q7 was up 6 percent to 17,763, and Q3 was up 17 percent, to 10,636.
A4 was off 1 percent to 18,397, while A5 was up 102 percent to 13,592. A3 slipped 22 percent, to 9,731.
15. Mitsubishi: 67,327, up 23.4 percent.
On track to eclipse the 100k mark this year, Mitsubishi is led by Outlander, up 30.6 percent, to 23,506. Outlander Sport was up 48.8 percent, to 22,415.
Mitsubishi sold 2,966 Eclipse Crosses in the first half of the year.
Mirage was off 3.7 percent, to 13,185.
16. Jaguar/Land Rover: 59,566, up 5 percent.
Jaguar is off 28 percent for the year so far, to 14,787, while Land Rover is up 25 percent, to 44,779.
The Land Rover Range Rover is of 2 percent, to 9,438, but 8,812 new Velars were sold in the first half. F-Pace is off 24 percent, to 7,252, while the new E-Pace claimed 1,426 sales.
XE was off 48 percent, to 2,663 and F-Type was off 47 percent, to 1,219.
17. Volvo: 47,622, up 39.6 percent.
The XC90 still leads the marque’s sales, at 15,974, up 32.8 percent.
The XC60 was next, up 66 percent to 14,790, of which 14,551 were the new model.
Volvo sold 5,098 XC40s in the first half.
V90 sales were 182, up 1,200 percent, but the CC version was up 26.9 percent, to 1,131.
18. Porsche: 29,421, up 6.7 percent.
Macan led at 11,650, up 9.5 percent.
Cayenne was of 25.3 percent, to 5,275, while 911 was up 10.8 percent, to 4,871.
