Is This the 2021 Toyota Hilux? Because It Looks Like a Tacoma

Although it’s not sold here in the U.S., the Toyota Hilux is known around the world as a tough and reliable truck. That dependable aura rubs off on the similarly sized Tacoma pickup we do get here, even though the trucks are quite different and styled uniquely. It appears as though the two Toyotas may get closer visually in the future, as our first images of what appear to be the 2021 Hilux depict a truck with more than a little Tacoma in it.

Car export company Milele Motors released the photos, claiming they are of the overhauled Hilux. If this is indeed the new Hilux, its bold grille is shaped much like the one on the Tacoma. The website says Toyota is offering two headlamps, a full LED option for higher trims and a halogen/LED combination for lower trims (just like our Taco does), that the tail lamps also are fresh designs. The Hilux will be available in many different colors, including shades of orange, blue, bronze, and red.

These computer-generated photos may simply be renderings of a new Hilux, and if that’s the case, the final product could look different. The current Hilux pickup debuted in 2015 and was given a face-lift in 2017.  A special edition “Invincible” model marked the 50th anniversary of the Hilux nameplate in 2018. It is due for another mid-cycle face-lift soon, if not a full redesign.

What is less clear is how this would-be new Hilux factors into rumors that the next-gen Tacoma and Tundra will sit on a common platform that will spread to all of Toyota’s pickups around the globe. This would help Toyota reduce complexity and save money as it has done since introducing the Toyota New Global Architecture. It also would bring the U.S.-market mid-size Tacoma pickup back into line with the Hilux. You see, Toyota used to sell the Hilux in North America, but replaced it with the Tacoma in 1995. Today, the two trucks are very different vehicles, suiting different markets. A Taco/Hilux realignment may be quite a ways off, however. The U.S.-market Tacoma just received updated styling, LED headlights, and an upgraded infotainment system for 2020. While the truck isn’t class-leading by any means, it does lead the pack in mid-size pickup sales.

Isso porque a Toyota anunciou nesta quinta-feira (7) que seus modelos 2020 do 4Runner, Tacoma, Tundra e Sequoia receberão suporte a Android Auto, bem como o Aygo 2018 e o Yaris 2019 — este último apenas na Europa.

A Toyota foi uma das últimas montadoras a disponibilizar compatibilidade ao CarPlay da Apple em seus carros também, quando anunciou em janeiro do ano passado que o app chegaria ao Avalon 2019. Após isso o suporte foi expandido para outros modelos da empresa. Aliás, vale apontar que o aplicativo da Maçã também virá para os novos modelos que estão recebendo o Android Auto.

Os rumores de que a Toyota começaria a integrar Android Auto em seus carros começaram a circular em 2018, mas, segundo a montadora, havia a preocupação com a segurança do app. Então a empresa focou-se no desenvolvimento de seu próprio infotainment (um sistema de comunicação e entretenimento integrados ao veículo).

O sistema tem base na Automotive Grade Linux, que por sua vez o SmartDeviceLink da Ford e permitir que alguns aplicativos de smartphones sejam espelhados no display do carro, o que inclui o CarPlay e o Android Auto. Vale lembrar que existe uma versão sem fio do CarPlay bem como um Android Auto Wireless, mas este está disponível apenas para carros específicos.

Next Year Is Here – Reference Mark

It happens every year: The day after the final out is recorded in the World Series, the collective media looks ahead. The Champagne isn’t even flat yet, but the pundits are trotting out their best predictions for how things will shape up next season.

To turn this sporting metaphor toward the automotive, this past year featured some rollicking competition. So while we salute the excellent winners in our tests—Lamborghini Huracan Performante, Jeep Wrangler, Ram 1500, and Genesis G70—this coming year will feature a cast of new vehicles so strong that winning our Best Driver’s Car and Of The Year competitions will require next-level stuff. Let’s take a look at the highlights of what we have coming:

Best Driver’s Car: For 2018, we tested too early in the season to have access to a Ferrari 812 Superfast, Aston Martin Superleggera, Bentley Continental GT, or Lamborghini Urus. Here’s hoping the Chevrolet launch team will have their mid-engine Corvette ready by summer for what could be an all-time shootout. Wait, is that the new Porsche 992 tearing up the asphalt, being chased by a BMW Z4 and Toyota Supra? And maybe a Lambo Huracan replacement, or a McLaren Speedtail, or Aston Martin Valkyrie, or a Tesla Roadster prototype? Time to call Tire Rack.

Truck of the Year: This past season had the rarity of brand-new full-size trucks from Ram, Chevrolet, and GMC, plus a diesel entry from Ford, all hitting at the same time, but next year might be even more exciting. Heavy-duty trucks are coming from these same brands, and we also have new midsize entries in the form of the Jeep Gladiator and Ford Ranger—plus Chevy has the rock-crawling Bison version of the Colorado ZR2. Rumor also has it that Toyota has significant changes in mind for its full-size Tundra.

SUV of the Year: Honda will bring back the Passport nameplate to split the gap between our two-time SUVOTY-winning CR-V and the solid seven-seat Pilot. But its fast track to the title will have solid competition from the Lincoln Aviator—which, if it’s anywhere near as good as its big brother Navigator, will be right in the mix. The Blue Oval isn’t done yet, with the return of the Escape (and maybe the Bronco by year’s end). Chevy reprises the Blazer. Now that Genesis has shown that Korean brands can deservedly win an OTY competition, Hyundai trots out the seven-seat Hyundai Palisade. Don’t count out Toyota with its new Highlander. At the high end of the market, the massive BMW X7 arrives, as does the Mercedes GLE with its instantly adjustable ride height. Land Rover moves its stunning Velar styling language down to a previous SUVOTY-winning Evoque. And given the impact the electric Jaguar I-Pace had on this past year, one can readily assume the Audi E-Tron will shake things up.

Car of the Year: Good luck comes in threes. Next year, the redesigned BMW 3 Series and Mazda3 debut. For those of you keeping score, our last two COTYs—the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Genesis G70—were vehicles that challenge the BMW 3er for luxury compact sport sedan dominance. Now the Bimmer is back to reclaim its crown. Meanwhile, the Mazda3 (the staff’s default pick when asked, “I need a fun first new car that won’t break my wallet”) aims to show once again what is possible at the affordable end of the spectrum. Toyota will beg to differ, however, with a redesigned Corolla sedan running on the zippy new TNGA platform, while Nissan aims to show what the Renault alliance can mean for its Sentra. Mercedes continues its march downmarket with the A-Class sedan. The VW Passat—which won COTY at its last launch—is all new. For those with more premium-brand aspirations, BMW is bringing back the 8 Series, and Jaguar redesigns its XJ sedan to be fully electric.

Caught your breath yet? These are just the vehicles we know about. There could be even more new arrivals in the wings, hidden under designers’ tarps. To return to baseball (and shamelessly borrow from W.P. Kinsella’s Shoeless Joe), it looks like all the cosmic tumblers have clicked into place. The universe is showing us what’s possible.

Every MLB team’s best Winter Meetings rumor, graded

The Yankees might end up with Noah Syndergaard? The Dodgers might end up with Corey Kluber? It’s not wild yet, but it’s getting there.

Do you like waiver claims? Then, boy, would you have liked the first day of the 2018 MLB Winter Meetings. Carlos Asuaje was claimed! Mike Gerber was claimed! Just a bunch of GMs hanging around Vegas, claiming each other’s stuff when they aren’t looking.

But there are still rumors floating around. Actual rumors. Our job today is to look at these rumors and grade them. More specifically, we need to find the best rumor for each team and grade it.

There aren’t any signings, and there weren’t any great trades. So how are the rumors looking? Are they at least good rumors, the kind that allow us to close our eyes and imagine the sheer chaos and dread?

Some of them, yeah. Here are the hottest rumors around Major League Baseball at the moment:

Arizona Diamondbacks

In wake of Goldschmidt deal, #DBacks drawing trade interest in virtually all their players, but telling clubs they are not interested in a teardown, sources tell The Athletic. AZ open-minded, but will be selective in how it proceeds. Not entering rebuilding mode.

Yeah, that’s cute, Diamondbacks, but a team that trades Paul Goldschmidt after losing Patrick Corbin and A.J. Pollock is rebuilding. We don’t make the rules, here. Sorry if that’s a drag, but you literally traded your best player for prospects after losing your best pitcher. Don’t play the semantic shuffle with us.

Now, if the Diamondbacks were saying things like, “Ideally, we’re looking for players ready for the majors or close to it because we’re not interested in a rebuild. We want a quick reload,” I could dig it. As is, though ...

Ah, I love the idea that a win-now team is confident enough to trade one of its better young starters. Because Mike Foltynewicz is young and affordable, he should fetch a high price. Because the Braves are stacked with pitching prospects, they can afford to gamble and trade Foltynewicz at what could be his highest value.

The team that had Mike Minor, Brandon Beachy, and Kris Medlen at the same time should definitely not worry about depth. What’s the worst that could happen?

Or is the argument that a team that had Mike Minor, Brandon Beachy, and Kris Medlen at the same time should be way more inclined to trade a young arm because those things are inherently unpredictable?

I think the larger point is that pitchers are confusing and so are the Braves.

See, this is the thing about an abominable team: Even the rumors suck. One of the managerial candidates is Manny Acta, and another one is ... that guy with the hat ... look, I fell asleep reading the list. It’s entirely possible that this manager is the one who shepherds the Orioles back from the abyss — look at how little excitement there was about the Braves and Brian Snitker, for example — but right now, it’s just not a sexy rumor.

The Orioles won’t be a part of a sexy rumor until July 16, 2020. Savor it when it comes. It will be about the Dodgers wanting to trade for the player who breaks out in 2019, but savor it when it comes.

This, of course, means that they’re going to trade Kyle Hendricks and Anthony Rizzo in a six-way deal for Kyler Murray and Aaron Judge. But for now ...

They are still taking calls on first baseman Jose Abreu, but there’s an organizational debate on whether they should move him before the big money starts or keep him.

It’s a boring rumor, but don’t forget that the White Sox still have one piece to pawn. I know they don’t want to trade Abreu after his worst season, but if teams are interested in your soon-to-be expensive, two-tool, 32-year-old first baseman, you have to consider it.

(And if you’re the Rockies, a team that’s struggled to find half-decent first basement since Justin Morneau left, you have to be curious about the giant dinger monster that the bad team is curiously reluctant to deal.)

Cleveland Indians

The Tampa Bay Rays, coming off an unexpected 90-win season, are looking to upgrade their offense for the season ahead in the AL East.

They’re evaluating several players who could help them, including Yandy Diaz and Edwin Encarnacion of the Indians.

Those are two very different things! Edwin Encarnacion is an ultra-expensive 36-year-old who just put up his worst OPS+ in seven years, and it came with a noticeable decline in his contact and walk rates. Yandy Diaz is a young, inexpensive 27-year-old who probably should have had a job somewhere two years ago. The former makes no sense. The latter makes all of the sense.

Grant Brisbee is in the market for a 2011 Toyota Tundra with 115,000 miles or a new spice rack.

Well, I guess both of those are true, so I stand corrected. Perhaps it’s a package thing, where the Rays take on Encarnacion’s $25.7 million salary and raise their payroll to $26 million, and their reward is a nice, owner-friendly player with oodles of potential. I don’t know if this works, but it’s a heckuva rumor.

Rockies are serious about upgrading at first base. They made a sincere trade offer to Arizona for Paul Goldschmidt before his trade to St. Louis, Jeff Bridich said. He was not, however, surprised by the Cardinals as Goldschmidt’s end spot.

Since Todd Helton retired in 2013, the Rockies have had exactly one season with a first baseman who finished with 2 WAR, and that was in 2014. They spent a lot of money to get a shortstop-turned-outfielder to play first, and that was a debacle.

They should probably get serious about upgrading at first base.

This isn’t to pick on either writer, just a note that these conflicting notes are about a deal that’s already done. There’s no reason for skulduggery from the teams involved at this point. And if cables can get crossed in that situation, imagine how screwed up rumors can get when they’re being spread by teams looking to gain an advantage over their rivals.

What I’m trying to say is this is all useless and we’d be much better off not following any of this until March 1.

But then we’d miss out on the endorphins. Open wide and eat your endorphins.

(There aren’t a lot of good Astros rumors right now, just like with the Cubs and Red Sox. Winning the World Series makes you soft, kids.)
