U.S. Budget Deficit to Reach Near-Record $3 Trillion in 2021, CBO Says (Bloomberg) The U.S. will see a $3 trillion budget deficit this year, close to the 2020 record, while the economy will expand notably more than previously forecast, the Congressional Budget Office said as it incorporated the impact of President Joe Biden’s Covid-19 relief program. The deficit for the full 2020 fiscal year was $3.13 trillion, the biggest relative to the size of the economy since World War II. The totals amount to 13.4% of GDP in 2021 and 4.7% next year, and mark an increase from prior forecasts, as the CBO factored in the Biden administration’s $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, which was passed in March.

Elsa strengthens into season’s 1st hurricane in Caribbean (AP) Elsa strengthened into the first hurricane of the Atlantic season on Friday as it blew off roofs and snapped trees in the eastern Caribbean, where officials closed schools, businesses and airports. It appeared headed eventually in the general direction of Florida. The Category 1 storm is the first hurricane to hit Barbados in more than 60 years, unleashing heavy rains and winds on the island and then on St. Vincent and the Grenadines, which are struggling to recover from recent massive volcanic eruptions. The long-term forecast track showed it heading toward Florida as a tropical storm by Tuesday morning, but some models would carry it into the Gulf or up the Atlantic Coast.

Meanwhile, Brazil’s inflation has risen to over 8 percent annually amid drought-induced food and electricity price increases. Inflation is just one hardship that droughts are currently causing in the two countries and their neighbors: Lack of rain is also driving crop loss, migration, and more severe forest fires. Sweden stunned by rare shooting of police officer as gang violence worries grow (Reuters) Swedish caretaker Prime Minister Stefan Lofven expressed outrage on Thursday over the killing of an on-duty police officer, a rarity in the Nordic country, calling it an “attack on our open society” amid growing concerns over gang violence. The police officer in his 30s was shot and killed late on Wednesday while on duty in Biskopsgarden, a Gothenburg suburb that has been plagued by gang violence in recent years and where police have had an increased presence. The crime has shocked a country where fatal attacks on police officers are rare, with three killed in the last 20 years, including Wednesday’s victim. Gang violence has been in the spotlight after shootings and explosives attacks that have sometimes killed bystanders, and has become a political battleground, with left and right each seeking to claim the tougher line.

Coronavirus cases rise in Europe for first time in 10 weeks (Washington Post) The number of new coronavirus cases increased across Europe for the first time in 10 weeks, the World Health Organization said Thursday, ending a stretch that had raised hopes the pandemic would recede as vaccinations were on the rise. New infections jumped 10 percent over the past week in the 53 countries that make up the WHO European region, the agency’s regional director for Europe, Hans Kluge, said in a briefing. He attributed the rise to increased mixing, summer travel and the rapid spread of the more contagious delta variant first identified in India.

US hands Bagram Airfield to Afghans after nearly 20 years (AP) After nearly 20 years, the U.S. military left Bagram Airfield, the epicenter of its war to oust the Taliban and hunt down the al-Qaida perpetrators of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America, two U.S. officials said Friday. Afghanistan’s district administrator for Bagram, Darwaish Raufi, said the American departure was done overnight without any coordination with local officials, and as a result early Friday dozens of local looters stormed through the unprotected gates before Afghan forces regained control. “They were stopped and some have been arrested and the rest have been cleared from the base,” Raufi told The Associated Press, adding that the looters ransacked several buildings before being arrested and the Afghan National Security and Defense Forces (ANDSF) took control. The withdrawal from Bagram Airfield is the clearest indication that the last of the 2,500-3,500 U.S. troops have left Afghanistan or are nearing a departure, months ahead of President Joe Biden’s promise that they would be gone by Sept. 11.

Anxious Afghans fear tomorrow; many seeking to leave (AP) Imtiaz Mohmand, just 19, makes a living selling melons out of a crate perched on his three-wheel motorcycle in the Afghan capital’s Kart-e-Now neighborhood. He only managed to finish Grade 7 before being sent to work to help support a family of 13. He has been robbed twice. Both times, his mobile phone was taken, along with his meager earnings of the day. In four days, he and four friends will leave Afghanistan. They have paid a smuggler to sneak them across the border to Iran and into Turkey. “There’s no job, no security here. There are thieves everywhere. I tried to make a living but I can’t,” said Mohmand, who has seven friends already on their way to Turkey. Mohmand’s frustration and anxieties run like a theme through most conversations in today’s Afghanistan as Afghans witness the final withdrawal of the U.S. military and its NATO allies. Afghans say international forces are leaving a country deeply impoverished, on the brink of another civil war and with a worsening lawlessness that terrifies some more than the advancing Taliban insurgency. The warlords with whom the U.S.-led coalition partnered to oust the Taliban are resurrecting militias with a history of devastating violence to fight the insurgents, who have made gains even in the warlords’ northern strongholds. Outside the Turkish Visa Center in Kabul’s city center, the road is crowded with four-wheel drive vehicles and new Toyota corollas belonging to the wealthier who are looking for visas to leave. Since the announcement of the final withdrawal, thousands of visa applications have inundated the Turkish Embassy in Kabul. Other embassies have also reported a dramatic increase. Religious controls have been part of communist practice since the foundation of the People’s Republic of China. But since 2018, many churches have been shut down—mostly unsanctioned ones but including some officially recognized groups. Between 5,000 and 10,000 Christian churchgoers have been arrested, some prominent Protestant clergy have been given long prison sentences, and around two-thirds of China’s Protestants have resorted to underground churches in an attempt to avoid police harassment. Government officials have been asked to compile more details of worshippers, feeding into discrimination in employment, especially in official posts. All children under age 18 have been strictly prohibited from attending any kind of religious education—theoretically already the case but not strongly enforced beforehand. Religious leaders are now expected to spend more time extolling the CCP and Chinese President Xi Jinping personally than they do seeing to their flock. In some churches, icons of Jesus or Mary have already been replaced with portraits of Xi. The ultimate goal seems to be to suppress any kind of identity—religious, ethnic, or ideological—that might challenge the CCP’s authority, whether now or in the future. Chinese leadership have studied the fall of the Soviet bloc intensely and are well aware of the role both Catholic and Protestant faith contributed to the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe.

Philippine Volcano Leads To Evacuations (NBC News) Mass evacuations were underway in the Philippines Thursday after the alert status was raised for the Taal volcano, located 45 miles south of Manila. Although it’s one of the world’s smallest active volcanoes, standing at only 1,020 feet, Taal can be deadly. An eruption in 1911 killed more than 1,300 people. In January 2020, Taal shot a column of ash and steam almost 10 miles into the sky, forcing more than 100,000 people to abandon their homes and causing widespread flight cancellations and heavy ash falls in Manila.

Australia locks out thousands more citizens as virus slip-ups mount (Washington Post) Facing outbreaks of the contagious delta variant and a floundering vaccination campaign, Australia moved Friday to further seal itself off from the world as its earlier success in tackling the coronavirus continued to unravel. Officials agreed to halve the number of people permitted to enter the nation under an already strict border policy that bars entry to nearly everyone except returning citizens, residents and their immediate families, who must quarantine for two weeks in a hotel at their own expense. Unlike many countries where the virus has long circulated in the community, Australia has pursued an aggressive suppression strategy of zero transmission, with low tolerance for even single-digit daily cases. Effective July 14, the number of international arrivals will be cut to about 3,000 a week, dimming repatriation hopes for some 34,000 Australians stranded overseas and many more who want to visit their loved ones but can’t get on a flight. The approach—which Morrison indicated would persist at least until year-end—has earned the country the tags “hermit kingdom” and “Fortress Australia.”

Railguns (AP) The U.S. Navy has mothballed its electromagnetic railgun program after spending around $500 million on R&D for the weapon, which uses electricity to fire projectiles at seven times the speed of sound. Instead, they’re funding hypersonic missiles, directed energy systems and electronic warfare. The key issue was that the operating range of 110 miles meant that a ship with a railgun would be in range of missiles, so, whoops. Another problem is that while a normal gun can be fired 600 times before needing a refurbished barrel, the prototype railgun had to be replaced anywhere between a dozen or two dozen shots.

TOP 10 VEHICLES IN THE CARIBBEAN: TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS

It is said that travel forms youth. For car enthusiasts of all kinds, they help to strengthen their automotive culture, because when you leave North America, you discover creations that you don’t even know exist.

As you can imagine, we wouldn’t miss the opportunity to bring you back some pictures of models seen during a visit to the Caribbean in February. On the menu are two galleries that present you with different realities. The first one is about one of the smallest islands of Turks and Caicos, Grand Turk. A second gallery will follow on some fascinating models seen on the islands of Curaçao and Aruba.

1 — Jeep Wrangler

No matter where you set foot on the planet, you’ll find Jeep Wranglers. And everywhere, the craze is the same. A vehicle as planetary as it is mythical. The rental companies that offer them to tourists abound and the latter are ready to pay the big price to explore a new country at the wheel of this adventurer.

Note this edition, with a right-hand drive. Many of the island’s vehicles come directly from Japan.

2 – Toyota Carina

The Toyota Carina is a car that was born in 1970 and whose career ended in 2001. It is normal that you don’t know it, since it has never been offered here. Elsewhere, it has always been seen as a four-door variant of the Celica, the model with which it shared its seats.

It can be seen as a cousin of the Corona, and also of the Corolla to a lesser extent. The model photographed was marketed from 1996 to 2001 and represented the seventh and last generation.

3 — Nissan Wingroad

The Wingroad station wagon is also a car that we would be hard pressed to know, as it has not been marketed here or in Europe. On the other hand, the Caribbean was on its list of export destinations, so we find it there. The edition captured on the spot was offered from 1999 to 2005 and was equipped with a 4-cylinder 2-litre engine.

4 – SsangYong Actyon Sport

At home, we identify the Korean automobile industry through the creations of Hyundai and Kia, but we shouldn’t forget the smaller firm SsangYong. The latter is the fourth largest in South Korea and since 2011, it is owned by the Indian manufacturer Mahindra.

As for the Actyon model, it’s primarily a compact SUV, but a pickup truck is also available.

Interestingly here, the vehicle’s licence plate indicates that it’s a local government model.

5 — Hummer… ou trappe à touristes

A miniature Hummer? Such a thing has never existed, of course. However, one company did not hesitate to exploit the name by promising Hummer excursions. When you see the car in disguise, you can’t help but smile.

6 — Nissan March

We will have known only one generation of the modern Nissan Micra, the one that the Japanese manufacturer has proposed to us from 2015 to 2019, inclusively (even if 2019 models will still be available this year).

Here’s what the previous generation looked like in Japan, the one offered between 2002 and 2010 elsewhere in the world.

7 — Mazda Demio

Back home, we know the Mazda Demio as the… Mazda2. In fact, before it became a sub-compact, it took the form of a small SUV. The photographed version belongs to the second generation, marketed between 2002 and 2007. And, as you can see, the rust problem that we experienced with the brand’s products during this period doesn’t spare the models that enjoy a much more pleasant climate. Note that salt has the ability to wreak havoc there. To protect your car there, it is often necessary to apply a sealant.

8 — Honda Inspire

The model you see in this photo is not a Honda Accord, but a model named Inspire. It’s actually a Japanese version of the seventh-generation Accord.

Throughout its history, the Inspire has sometimes been a derivative of an Acura and sometimes a Honda Accord. Production ceased in late 2012 with the arrival of the eighth generation Accord, but resumed in 2018 with the debut of the ninth.

9 — Toyota Vitz

Since its debut in the late 1990s in Japan, the model known as Echo, then Yaris in our country, has been known as the Vitz in Japan. In Canada, let’s remember that it made its debut in 2003 under the name Echo.

10 — Nissan Lafesta

The Nissan Lafesta is a family vehicle that was offered by Nissan on the Asian markets from 2004 to 2017. The name Festa is taken from the Italian and represents celebration, family moments, etc. It is based on Nissan’s C platform and its bases were also used for the Renault Megane, but also for the XTrail SUV we knew back home.

While sub-compact SUVs have been the law in Canada for the past few years, the format was introduced much earlier elsewhere on the planet. In 2005, Toyota introduced an SUV version of the Vitz, our Yaris, in Japan. The model was produced until the end of 2017.

13 — Mazda Demio

Here’s the Mazda Demio again, but this time in a sub-compact car configuration. This version has made a career under the name Mazda2 with us.

CANADA: 2 million new vehicles sold in 2018 even as sales fell 6.5% in December

For the first time in nearly a decade, annual new-vehicle sales fell in Canada in 2018 with a total of 2,003,506 vehicles sold, down 1.9 percent from 2017, according to the Automotive News Data Center in Detroit.

Annual Canadian sales last fell in 2009 when they dropped 11 percent over 2008 at the height of the Great Recession.

December contributed to the lower 2018 total with 116,605 vehicles sold during the month, down 6.5 percent from last December.

“Given all of the political and economic turbulence – combined with interest rate increases – it is difficult to classify the 2018 as disappointing from a sales perspective,” said David Adams, president of Global Automakers of Canada, which speaks for import brands sold in Canada. “We’ve had a decade of record sales each year, and at some point things are going to slow down. That’s the nature of the business.”

Ford sold the most vehicles in December (16,047) and for the year (297,902), repeating as the overall annual sales leader. The Ford F-series pickup and the Honda Civic retained the titles of Canada’s best-selling vehicle and best-selling passenger car, respectively, for 2018.

Trucks continued to grow their market share in 2018, comprising 70.1 percent of all vehicles sold during the year, up from 68.6 percent in 2017, according to the Global Automakers of Canada.

December was a month of sales extremes as the Canadian industry battled against a nine-month losing skid — which now stands at 10 months in length — while still managing to top the two-million sales plateau for the second time ever.

The steepest monthly drop during the 10-month run of declines was November’s 8.2 percent, which dragged the industry 1.7 percent behind its 2017 pace at that time.

DECEMBER’S UPS AND DOWNS

Toyota Canada surged 26 percent in December to close out 2018, on its way to its best sales year ever. Nissan also had its best December ever with total sales of 9,488 units, an increase of 1.1 percent and cap to a record year. Honda Canada saw its sales rise 10.1 percent in the final month of 2018.

FCA Canada, meanwhile, dropped 32.5 percent, its third sharp monthly decline in a row. Its sales were down 35.2 percent in November and 14.8 percent in October. General Motors reported a 30-percent decline in sales in December, but didn’t immediately break out sales by brand. Ford also slid 8.4 percent and didn’t provide a brand breakdown.

Here’s a more detailed look at how some of the automakers fared in December:

TOYOTA’S RECORD

Toyota brand sales were up 28 percent to 14,153 vehicles while sales of the luxury Lexus brand rose 10 percent to 1,712 units.

The December push allowed Toyota to chalk up a 3.2 percent gain for the year, with 231,646 vehicles sold.

December sales of the popular RAV4 — the automaker’s best-selling vehicle in Canada — more than doubled during the month, up 60 percent to 4,035 units. Sienna minivan sales were also up 59 percent to 1,687 units.

Bucking the truck trend, consumers bought 30 percent more Toyota brand cars in December 2018 than they did a year ago.

Every car except the Yaris posted gains greater than 35 percent.

Corolla sales were up 50 percent to 2,928 and total Prius sales were up 66 percent to 580 vehicles.

Sales of the midsize Tacoma were down 7.7 percent to 870 units while sales of the full-size Tundra rose 11 percent to 741 sold.

Toyota Canada CEO Larry Hutchinson in a statement called the annual sales fantastic.

“Moving into 2019, I believe we have even more to look forward to,” Hutchinson said in the statement. “The launch of Lexus UX and all new models of the Toyota RAV4 and Toyota Corolla will highlight what should be another great year for Toyota Canada.”

Stephen Beatty, vice president and corporate secretary of Toyota Canada, said December sales lined up with new product and the final arrival of Corolla hatchback. And a lot of excitement building around the New RAV launching at the end of the year.

“The new RAV4 and new Corolla, these are bread-and-butter vehicles for the Canadian marketplace,” he said.

FCA SALES PLUNGE

FCA Canada reported a December sales decline of 32 percent over the same month a year ago. The automaker sold 11,923 vehicles in Canada last month. It was a stark contrast to the 14 percent jump the automaker reported in the United States in December.

Every FCA brand in Canada saw its sales fall in December 2018.

The Ram brand was the automaker’s best performer by volume, with 5,325 vehicles sold, but down 4 percent over December 2017. Ram 1500 sales of 4,377 trucks were up 4 percent for the month, compared with December 2017.

The Chrysler brand saw its sales plummet 81 percent to 219 total vehicles, with sales of the Pacifica minivan down 68 percent to 205 units. FCA sold just 14 Chrysler 300 sedans last month.

Dodge sales fell 56 percent to 2,316 units. Caravan sales were essentially cut in half, down 49 percent to 1,661 units.

Meanwhile, Jeep sales were off 23 percent to 4,002 vehicles with Wrangler sales — up 38 percent to 1,445 units — offsetting losses across the brand.

The Wrangler sales were a December record. And for the calendar year, Jeep Wrangler set an annual record with 24,615 vehicles sold, up 42 percent from 2017.

Cherokee and Grand Cherokee sales were down 54 and 16 percent, respectively.

NISSAN HAS RECORD YEAR

Nissan Canada reported its best December ever with total sales of 9,488 units, an increase of 1.1 percent year-over-year.

The total also pushed the automaker to a record sales year with 149,117 vehicles sold in 2018.

Nissan division recorded 8,518 sales in December, a decrease of 1.6 percent year-over-year.

Five vehicles in the Nissan lineup set December sales records including the electric Leaf, Qashqai, Armada, Titan full-size truck and GT-R.

The Infiniti luxury division set an annual sales record in 2018 with a total of 12,581 units sold, an increase of 1.2 percent over 2017.

HYUNDAI, KIA BOTH DOWN

Hyundai sales dipped 5.5 percent in December while Kia sales were down four percent when compared with December 2017.

The luxury Genesis line saw sales of 156 vehicles, up from the 47 it sold a year ago.

Hyundai’s top-selling vehicle last month was the Elantra sedan, with 2,024 sold. The Tuscon was the automaker’s best-selling truck with 1,278 sold.

The Forte sedan was Kia’s top seller with 1,152 sold and 919 sales of the Sorento led the truck category.

En participant au concours, chaque participant déclare par la présente que tous les documents de participation en prime qu’il soumet : i. sont originaux à lui et qu’il a obtenu tous les droits nécessaires à et dans les documents de participation en prime aux fins de soumettre ces documents de participation en prime au concours; ii. n’enfreignent pas quelconque loi, ordonnance, ou règlement; iii. ne contiennent pas de référence ou ressemblance à quelconque tiers identifiable, sauf si le consentement de tels individus a été obtenu, ou le consentement de leur parent/tuteur a été obtenu si les individus n’ont pas encore atteint l’âge de la majorité dans leur juridiction de résidence; iv. ne donnera pas lieu à quelconque réclamation, incluant, mais sans s’y limiter, de violation, de non-respect du droit à la vie privée ou de publicité, ou de non-respect de quelconques droits ou intérêts de n’importe quel tiers; et v. ne sont pas diffamatoires, diffamatoire à l'égard de toute entreprise, pornographique ou obscène, et ne , ne contient, ne décrit, n’inclut, ou n’implique, sans s’y limiter, les éléments suivants : de la nudité; de la consomption d’alcool/drogues; des actes sexuels explicites ou excessifs ou des insinuations sexuelles; du langage et/ou symbole grossier, vulgaire ou offensant; des caractérisations désobligeantes de tout groupe ethnique, racial, sexuel, religieux ou autres (y compris, sans s’y limiter, les concurrents du commanditaire); du contenu qui approuve, tolère et/ou discute de toute conduite ou comportement illégal, inapproprié ou risqué; des informations personnelles des individus, y compris, sans s’y limiter, les noms, numéros de téléphone et adresses (physiques ou électroniques); des messages commerciaux; des comparaisons ou des sollicitations pour des produits ou services autres que les produits du commanditaire; tout produit de tiers identifiables, marques de commerce, marques et/ou logos autres que ceux du commanditaire (p. ex., les vêtements portés et/ou produits apparaissant dans vos documents de participation en prime ne doivent contenir aucun logo, marque de commerce ou autre matériel visible provenant d’un tiers, à moins que des consentements appropriés aient été obtenus --- note: tous les produits, marques de commerce, marques et/ou logos de tiers pour lesquels le consentement n'a pas été obtenu par le participant doivent être rendus flous afin d'être méconnaissables); conduite ou autres activités en violation du présent règlement; et/ou tout autre matériel qui est ou pourrait être considéré comme inapproprié ou offensant, tel que déterminé par le commanditaire à sa seule et entière discrétion. Le commanditaire et/ou son agence de promotion ou modérateur de contenu désigné (le « réviseur ») se réservent le droit de réviser tous les documents de participations en prime. Tout document de participation en prime que le réviseur estime, à sa seule et entière discrétion, enfreindre les conditions et modalités énoncées au présent règlement est sujet à la disqualification. Le réviseur se réserve le droit, à sa seule et entière discrétion, à tout moment et pour quelque raison que ce soit, d’enlever tout document de participation en prime et/ou de demander à un participant de modifier et/ou soumettre à nouveau ses documents de participation en prime (ou une partie de ceux-ci) afin de s'assurer que les documents de participation en prime sont conformes au présent règlement ou pour toute autre raison. Si une telle action est nécessaire à tout moment pendant ou après le concours, le commanditaire se réserve le droit, à sa seule discrétion, de prendre toute mesure qu’il juge nécessaire en fonction des circonstances, y compris, sans s’y limiter, disqualifier les documents de participation en prime (et donc la participation en prime, la participation et/ou le participant associé) – pour s'assurer que le concours se déroule conformément à l'interprétation de la lettre et de l'esprit du présent règlement, tel qu’interprété par le commanditaire. En participant au concours et en soumettant une participation en prime, chaque participant: (i) sans limiter les règlements de la plateforme sociale applicable, accorde au commanditaire, à perpétuité, une licence non exclusive de publication, d’affichage, de reproduction, de modification, de ou d’utilisation autre de ses documents de participation en prime (et chacun des éléments de ceux-ci), en totalité ou en partie, pour la publicité ou la promotion du concours ou pour toute autre raison; (ii) renonce à tous les droits moraux sur et dans ses documents de participation en prime (et chacun des éléments de ceux-ci) en faveur du commanditaire (et toute personne autorisée par le commanditaire à utiliser des documents de participation en prime); et (iii) accepte de décharger et tenir indemne le commanditaire et toutes les autres parties renonciataires de et contre toutes les réclamations, dommages, responsabilités, coûts et dépenses découlant de de l'utilisation de ses documents de participation en prime (ou de tout élément de ceux-ci), y compris, sans s’y limiter, toute réclamation fondée sur les droits de publicité, la diffamation, la violation de la vie privée, la violation du droit d’auteur, la contrefaçon de marque de commerce ou tout autre droit de propriété intellectuelle ou autre cause d'action que ce soit. 6. CONDITIONS DE PARTICIPATION : S’il est établi par le commanditaire (selon toute preuve ou autre information à sa disposition, ou découverte de quelque autre façon par le commanditaire) qu’une personne a tenté : (i) d’obtenir plus d’une (1) participation (peu importe la méthode de participation); et/ou (ii) d’utiliser plusieurs noms, plusieurs identités, plusieurs adresses électroniques, plusieurs comptes et/ou tout système ou programme automatisé, programme script, macro-programme, programme robotique ou autre et/ou tout autre moyen qui n’est pas conforme à l’interprétation du commanditaire quant à la lettre et/ou à l’esprit du présent règlement pour s’inscrire ou participer au concours, ou pour perturber de quelque autre manière ledit concours, telle personne pourra alors être disqualifiée du concours, et ce, à l’entière et absolue discrétion du commanditaire. Votre participation et/ou participation en prime, le cas échéant (collectivement, une « participation au concours ») pourra être rejetée (à l’entière et absolue discrétion du commanditaire) si elle n’est pas remplie en entier et ne comporte pas tous les renseignements requis, ou si elle n’est pas soumise et reçue conformément au présent règlement pendant la période du concours. Les parties au concours, les plateformes sociales, et chacun de leurs administrateurs, dirigeants, mandataires, représentants, successeurs et ayants droit respectifs (collectivement, les « parties renonciataires ») ne peuvent être tenus responsables de toute participation au concours parvenue en retard, perdue, mal acheminée, retardée, incomplète ou incompatible (lesquelles seront alors annulées), ni engager leur responsabilité de quelque façon à cet égard. Aucun bulletin de participation reproduit par fac-similé ou photocopié ne sera accepté. 7. VÉRIFICATION : Toutes les participations au concours demeurent assujetties à une vérification en tout temps et pour quelque raison que ce soit Le commanditaire se réserve le droit, à son entière et absolue discrétion, d’exiger une preuve d’identité et/ou d’admissibilité (sous une forme acceptable pour le commanditaire – y compris, mais non exclusivement, une carte d’identité à photo émise par le gouvernement) : (i) afin de vérifier l’admissibilité d’une personne à participer au concours; (ii) afin de vérifier l’admissibilité et/ou la légitimité d’une participation au concours et/ou autre information soumise (ou prétendument soumise) dans le cadre du présent concours; et/ou (iii) pour toute autre raison jugée nécessaire par le commanditaire, à son entière et absolue discrétion, afin d’administrer le concours conformément à l’interprétation du commanditaire quand à la lettre et à l’esprit du présent règlement. Tout manquement à fournir telle preuve, à l’entière satisfaction du commanditaire et dans le délai précisé par ce dernier, pourra entraîner une disqualification, et ce, à l’entière et absolue discrétion du commanditaire. Seuls les dispositifs officiels du commanditaire pour chronométrer le temps utilisés dans le cadre du présent concours seront considérés comme un critère déterminant du temps. 8. PRIX ET VALEUR APPROXIMATIVE AU DÉTAIL : Un (1) prix (le « prix ») constitué d’un (1) Corolla Hatchback XSE 2019 de Toyota (le « véhicule ») d’une valeur approximative au détail de 31 000,500 $ CA. Le prix comprend les frais de destination/transport ainsi que tous les droits et taxes applicables. Sans porter préjudice au caractère général de ce qui précède, le prix est assujetti aux conditions générales suivantes : (i) Le véhicule doit être accepté tel qu’attribué et n’est ni cessible, ni transférable, ni échangeable contre de l’argent comptant (sauf sur autorisation spécifique du commanditaire, à son entière et absolue discrétion); (ii) aucune substitution ne sera autorisée, sauf à la discrétion du commanditaire; (iii) le commanditaire se réserve le droit, en tout temps, de remplacer le véhicule, pour quelque raison que ce soit, par un prix ou une composante du prix d’une valeur au détail égale ou supérieure, y compris, mais non exclusivement et à son entière discrétion, un prix en argent comptant; (iv) la couleur et les autres caractéristiques du véhicule demeurent à l’entière et absolue discrétion du commanditaire et sous réserve de la disponibilité; (v) le véhicule est couvert par la garantie standard du constructeur, le cas échéant; (vi) après en avoir été avisé(e), le/la gagnant(e) confirmé(e) du prix devra personnellement prendre livraison de son véhicule auprès d’un établissement concessionnaire Toyota ou à un autre endroit au Canada situé à une distance raisonnable de son domicile au Canada, tel qu’établi par le commanditaire, à son entière et absolue discrétion, et devra présenter une pièce d’identité personnelle adéquate (sous une forme acceptable pour le commanditaire – y compris, mais non exclusivement, une carte d’identité à photo émise par le gouvernement); (vii) le véhicule ne sera attribué que si le/la gagnant(e) confirmé(e) de tel prix prouve (sous une forme acceptable pour le commanditaire) qu’il/elle possède un permis de conduire valide (équivalant à un permis de catégorie « G » en Ontario) dans la province/le territoire où il/elle habite et fournit la preuve (sous une forme acceptable pour le commanditaire) d’une assurance acceptable; (viii) le/la gagnant(e) confirmé(e) du prix est entièrement responsable de toute dépense non précisée dans la description du prix ci-dessus, y compris, mais sans s’y limiter, les frais d’enregistrement et d’immatriculation, les frais d’assurance, les coûts d’accessoires additionnels et tous autres coûts associés à ce qui suit : (a) tout ensemble d’équipements améliorés ou en option qu’il/elle pourrait demander (et qui pourra être autorisé par le commanditaire, à son entière et absolue discrétion); (b) l’obtention d’un permis de conduire valide, des plaques d’immatriculation, de l’enregistrement, de l’assurance et/ou du carburant; et/ou (c) la prise en charge du véhicule. IMPORTANT : LA VALEUR APPROXIMATIVE AU DÉTAIL DU VÉHICULE INDIQUÉE CI-DESSUS EST EXACTE EN DATE DU 31 JUILLET 2018. EN AUCUN CAS, QUEL QU’IL SOIT, TOUTE DIFFÉRENCE POUVANT EXISTER ENTRE LA VALEUR AU DÉTAIL RÉELLE DU VÉHICULE AU MOMENT DE SON ATTRIBUTION ET LA VALEUR APPROXIMATIVE AU DÉTAIL DU VÉHICULE INDIQUÉE CI-DESSUS NE SERA ACCORDÉE. AFIN DE DISSIPER TOUT DOUTE, IL DEMEURE ENTENDU QUE LE PRIX SE COMPOSE DU VÉHICULE ET NON DE LA VALEUR RÉELLE DU VÉHICULE. Aucune des parties renonciataires ne fait de représentation ni n’offre aucune garantie, expresse ou implicite, quant à la qualité ou à la convenance du prix attribué dans le cadre du concours. Dans toute la mesure permise par la loi applicable, le/la gagnant(e) confirmé(e) conçoit et reconnaît qu’il ou elle ne peut pas demander de remboursement ou intenter une poursuite judiciaire, ni faire valoir un recours en equity contre le commanditaire ou l’une des autres parties renonciataires dans le cas où le prix ne leur conviendrait pas ou serait insatisfaisant de quelque façon que ce soit. Afin de dissiper tout doute, en acceptant le prix, le/la gagnant(e) confirmé(e) accepte de renoncer à tous recours contre commanditaire et toutes les autres parties renonciataires si le prix ou une partie de celui-ci n’est pas satisfaisant, en tout ou en partie. 9. PROCESSUS DE SÉLECTION DU/DE LA GAGNANT(E) ADMISSIBLE ET CHANCES DE GAGNER : Le 6 novembre 2018 (« date du tirage »), à Toronto, en Ontario, vers midi HE, un(e) (1) participant(e) admissible sera choisi(e) lors d’un tirage au sort effectué parmi toutes les participations au concours admissibles soumises et reçues conformément au présent règlement pendant la période du concours. Les chances de gagner dépendent du nombre de participations au concours admissibles soumises et reçues conformément au présent règlement pendant la période du concours. 10. PROCESSUS DE NOTIFICATION DU/DE LA GAGNANT(E) ADMISSIBLE : Le commanditaire ou son/sa représentant(e) désigné(e) tenteront à au moins trois (3) reprises de contacter le/la gagnant(e) admissible (au moyen de l’information fournie sur le bulletin de participation) dans les cinq (5) jours ouvrables suivant la date du tirage. Si l’on ne parvient pas à joindre le/la gagnant(e) admissible tel qu’il est indiqué ci-dessus, ou si une notification nous est retournée comme étant non livrable, alors tel(le) participant(e) pourra, à l’entière et absolue discrétion du commanditaire, être disqualifié(e) (et, le cas échéant, se verra retirer tout droit au prix) et le commanditaire se réserve le droit, à son entière et absolue discrétion et si le temps le permet, de choisir un(e) autre participant(e) admissible au hasard parmi le reste des participations au concours admissibles soumises et reçues conformément au présent règlement pendant la période du concours . 11. PROCESSUS DE CONFIRMATION DU/DE LA GAGNANT(E) ADMISSIBLE : IL N’Y A PAS DE GAGNANT(E) JUSQU’À CE QUE LE COMMANDITAIRE CONFIRME OFFICIELLEMENT LE(LA) GAGNANT(E) CONFORMÉMENT AU PRÉSENT RÈGLEMENT. AVANT D’ÊTRE DÉCLARÉ(E) GAGNANT(E) CONFIRMÉ(E) D’UN PRIX, le/la gagnant(e) admissible devra : (a) répondre correctement à une question réglementaire d’arithmétique sans aide mécanique ou autre (laquelle pourra, à l’entière et absolue discrétion du commanditaire, être administrée en ligne, par courriel ou par tout autre moyen électronique, par téléphone, ou sur le formulaire de décharge de responsabilité du commanditaire); et (b) signer et retourner, dans les dix (10) jours ouvrables suivant la notification, la déclaration de décharge de responsabilité du commanditaire, laquelle (entre autres) : (i) confirme le respect du présent règlement du concours; (ii) reconnaît l’acceptation du prix (tel qu’attribué); (iii) dégage les parties renonciataires de toute responsabilité à l’égard du présent concours, de sa participation et/ou de l’attribution et de l’utilisation/du mauvais usage du prix ou de toute partie dudit prix; et (iv) confirme son consentement à toute publication, toute reproduction et/ou tout autre usage de ses nom, adresse, voix, déclarations sur le concours et/ou photographie ou autre portrait, sans autre préavis ni autre compensation, dans toute publicité ou annonce exécutée par le commanditaire ou en son nom, par quelque procédé que ce soit, notamment d’impression, de diffusion ou de communication par Internet. Le commanditaire se réserve en outre le droit, subordonné uniquement à l’approbation de la Régie au Québec, d’annuler, de modifier ou de suspendre ce concours, ou de modifier le présent règlement, de quelque façon que ce soit, en cas d’accident, d’erreur d’impression, d’erreur administrative, ou de toute autre nature, quelle qu’elle soit, ou pour toute autre raison, et ce, sans avis préalable ni obligation. Sans porter préjudice au caractère général de ce qui précède, le commanditaire se réserve le droit, à son entière et absolue discrétion, d’administrer une autre question réglementaire, s’il le juge approprié, selon les circonstances et/ou afin de respecter la loi applicable. Résidents du Québec : Tout litige concernant le déroulement ou l’organisation d’un concours publicitaire peut être soumis à la Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux dans le but d’obtenir une décision. Tout litige concernant l’attribution d’un prix peut être soumis à la Régie, seulement dans le but d’aider les parties à conclure une entente. En s’inscrivant à ce concours, chaque participant(e) consent expressément à ce que le commanditaire, ses mandataires et/ou représentants, puissent stocker, partager et utiliser les renseignements personnels soumis, uniquement à des fins d’administration du présent concours, et ce, conformément à la politique de confidentialité du commanditaire (disponible à l’adresse https://www.toyota.ca/toyota/fr/privacy). Le commanditaire se réserve le droit, subordonné uniquement à l’approbation de la Régie au Québec, de modifier les dates, délais et/ou autres paramètres du concours stipulés dans le présent règlement, dans la mesure jugée nécessaire par le commanditaire, en vue de vérifier le respect du présent règlement par tout(e) participant(e), la conformité de toute participation et/ou d’autres renseignements avec ledit règlement, ou encore, en raison de difficultés techniques ou autres, ou à la lumière de toute circonstance qui, de l’avis du commanditaire, à son entière et absolue discrétion, affecte(nt) l’administration adéquate du concours, selon l’intention du présent règlement, ou pour toute autre raison. Advenant toute divergence ou discordance entre les conditions de la version anglaise du présent règlement et les divulgations ou autres énoncés contenus dans tout matériel du concours, y compris, mais sans s’y limiter, la version française du présent règlement, toute publicité au point de vente, télévisée, imprimée ou diffusée en ligne et/ou toutes les directives ou interprétations du présent règlement soumises par un représentant du commanditaire, les conditions de la version anglaise du présent règlement auront préséance, seront applicables et assureront la régularisation du concours, dans toute la mesure permise par la loi. L’invalidité ou le caractère inexécutoire d’une disposition du présent règlement ne saurait avoir d’incidence sur la validité ou le caractère exécutoire de toute autre disposition. Si une disposition est jugée invalide ou autrement inexécutoire ou illégale, le présent règlement demeurera autrement en vigueur et sera interprété conformément à ses modalités, comme s’il ne contenait pas cette disposition invalide ou illégale. Dans la pleine mesure permise par les lois applicables, toutes les questions concernant l’interprétation, la validité et le caractère exécutoire du présent règlement ou des droits et des obligations des participants, du commanditaire ou de l’une des autres parties renonciataires relativement au concours seront régies et interprétées conformément aux lois de la province d’Ontario et aux lois fédérales du Canada applicables dans cette province, sans donner effet aux règles ou dispositions en matière de compétence législative ou de conflit de lois qui donneraient lieu à l’application des lois de tout autre territoire. Les parties consentent par les présentes à la juridiction exclusive et au forum des tribunaux situés en Ontario pour toute action en exécution du présent règlement (ou s’y rapportant autrement) ou concernant le concours visé par les présentes.
