2018 Lexus LS Pricing: Yes, It’s Still a Lot Cheaper Than an S-class

When the Lexus LS first hit the scene in 1989, it undercut the competing German sedans by thousands of dollars. Nearly 30 years later, that’s still the case, as the new 2018 LS starts at $75,995, or $14,900 less than the least expensive Mercedes-Benz S-class and $8100 less than the cheapest BMW 7-series. Lexus’s latest flagship sedan comes in LS500 and LS500h forms, the former of which is powered by a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 while the latter uses a hybrid drivetrain incorporating a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V-6.

Not only is the Lexus less expensive than its European competition, it also comes better equipped, with even the base rear-wheel-drive LS500 coming standard with a full suite of active safety features that cost thousands extra on the S-class and 7-series. Lexus’s only real competition in the “budget-priced” flagship-sedan realm is the Genesis G90, which starts at an even lower $69,325 and includes plenty of standard equipment of its own.

All-wheel drive is a $3220 option on both the LS500 and the $80,505 LS500h hybrid, and several packages are available that can drive the sedans’ price above the six-figure mark. The LS500 F Sport that adds a performance-oriented wheel-and-tire package, larger brakes, sharper chassis tuning, and plenty of visual aggression inside and out, costs $81,995. A $9700 F Sport performance package turns up the sportiness a notch higher with active anti-roll bars, rear-wheel steering, and a variable-ratio steering rack.

For those interested more in the luxury side of the spectrum, numerous interior upgrades are offered for non–F Sport models. The lowest level is the $3730 Interior Upgrade package with nicer leather, 28-way front seats with massage, and heated rear seats; one step up is the Luxury package ($12,250–$12,290) with the above features plus four-zone automatic climate control and power reclining rear seats with heating, ventilation, and massage functions. The top-dog Executive package offers even more adjustability for the front and rear seats for between $17,080 and $17,100, while an extra $6000 on top of that adds exclusive Kiriko glass interior trim.

Lexus is preparing an all-new flagship limousine to take on the likes of the Audi A8 and Mercedes S-Class - and now Auto Express has had a brief run around the roads of Yokohama, Japan, to gauge how the latest LS is shaping up.  It’s a bigger car than before. Lexus used to offer the model globally with a choice of regular and long wheelbases, but now there’s just a single version – and the gap between its front and rear axles is 35mm longer than the old extended-wheelbase variant. • Best luxury cars on sale There are a couple of new powertrain options too, although British buyers will only be offered one of them: the LS 500h hybrid. This mixes a 295bhp 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine with a pair of electric motors, giving a combined output of 354bhp. That’s enough for a claimed 0-62mph time of 5.4 seconds, even with a ludicrously complex four-step automatic transmission that mimics a ‘conventional’ 10-speed unit.  Image 3 of 13 Image 3 of 13 The LS 500h marks a significant step in Toyota’s hybrid development, because it switches the battery unit from nickel-metal hybride to lighter lithium-ion. The unit is 20 per cent smaller physically than the old spec, which, in turn helps the new LS hybrid gain 25 litres of boot space over the outgoing model. But it has a higher power density, and Lexus claims the car can reach up to 87mph on electric power alone. There’s also an LS 500, powered by a twin-turbocharged version of the same engine but with no electrical assistance. It’s actually slightly faster - a result, no doubt, of losing the weight of the batteries and the additional electric motors. But it’s likely to be targeted at markets like Russia and the US, with no plans for the car to be sold in the UK.  Our short drive on two-lane urban roads offered little chance to take the LS 500h much beyond 50mph. But it does feel pretty accomplished at these lower speeds, with the standard air suspension doing a fair job of soothing out bridge expansion joints and ridges in the road. Sharper imperfections are more of a challenge for the setup, though, so more pointed speed bumps will still be a pain. An S-Class is more comfortable, in other words. We can’t say for certain based on this test, but our gut feeling is that it will major on long-distance motorway cruising ability instead of any deftness or handling agility. The refinement as you pull away from rest is unnerving at first, with only a distant electric motor whine. Thereafter, a smooth approach will be rewarded, allowing the electric motor a better chance of acting alone, while also keeping revs to a sensible level if the system does decide that it needs the V6’s help. At a cruise, you won’t hear much from under the bonnet at all - although this also down to a fair amount of roar from the (minimum) 19-inch wheels and tyres. • Best hybrid cars currently available  We also had a chance to try out some of the LS’s new safety tricks, including its ability to keep the car in its lane while you issue a featherlight touch on the steering wheel. The big Lexus can switch between lanes if you hold the indicator in its ‘halfway down’ position, too. The lane keep assist is a little ponderous but works well, although the handover back to human control when the system doesn’t feel confident enough in the road markings takes a bit of getting used to. Lexus has crammed in plenty of Japanese craftwork, such as wood trim and pleated door trims, but while these elements look spectacular in their own right, the sheer number of them helps to create an interior with none of the coherence found in German rivals. You’ll see a dozen typefaces and clashing mixtures of textures, leaving you wondering whether the whole thing was conceived by several disconnected small teams, instead of a single well-run one. Perhaps more surprisingly, the quality doesn’t seem to be entirely consistent either. We were able to find the odd rough edge inside our (admittedly early) production car, and the shiny black plastic coathooks are some of the nastiest we’ve seen this side of a cheap supermini, too.  There’s no denying that the LS piles on the infotainment, with a Mark Levinson sound system that includes speakers in the headlining, a 12.3-inch infotainment system in the centre of the dashboard and even a 24-inch colour head-up display - the largest device of its type in the world.  We’re still waiting for UK specs, though, so for now we’re not even sure if the HUD will be standard-fit or a pricey cost option. And while the central screen itself is impressive, there’s still no sign of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay - a glaring omission in this connected age. This was a short drive, at limited speeds. But even with this in mind, the LS still doesn’t feel quite well rounded enough to deliver a proper blow to its German rivals. The petrol-electric powertrain may appeal to big-city limo drivers in an uncertain era for diesel - but we’re already struggling to see how the rest of the package is really going to tear many prospective customers away from their Audi A8 or Mercedes S-Class brochures. 2019 Cadillac CT6 2.0 First Test: Plain Luxury

The 2019 Cadillac CT6 is living on borrowed time. But before General Motors discontinues it along with five other cars, we wanted to see what the updated luxury sedan has to offer with its new turbo-four base engine. Mostly unchanged since its introduction, the big Caddy is an alternative to the usual full-size luxury suspects such as the Lexus LS, but it’s priced like a midsize sedan. However, there’s more to an aspirational premium vehicle than value; it must distinguish itself, appealing to the heart as much as it does to the mind, especially in today’s crossover-obsessed world.

The first thing you’ll notice about the 2019 Cadillac CT6 is its massive footprint. Thankfully, the exterior dimensions translate well once you get inside. The cabin is airy with large windows, excellent visibility, and enough room for you to cross your legs in the rear seat, perfect for long stints on the road. Although there are many soft, squishy surfaces, there’s an equal number of components right out of the GM parts bin, such as the turn signal and wiper stalks, putting the CT6’s fit and finish a notch below cars like the Lexus LS and BMW 7 Series. Additionally, the dash layout is dated, and the gloss black plastic trim is a magnet for dust and fingerprints.

Cadillac’s CUE interface is better than its earlier iterations, but to operate the haptic feedback buttons, you’ll have to take your eyes off the road. Features you interact with frequently such as media, navigation, climate controls, and radio are integrated within the 10.2-inch touchscreen but require you to go into multiple submenus and lack redundancy. Thankfully, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are well integrated, and it only takes a step or two to change what’s playing via voice commands. An optional 34-speaker Bose Panaray audio system rounds out the multimedia experience, but like many Bose units, it’s bass-heavy and muddled at lower volumes.

At the track, the 2019 CT6 sprinted to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds and finished the quarter mile in 15.7 seconds at 89.2 mph. That’s 1.1 seconds slower than a 2017 model we tested to 60 mph and a second slower in the quarter mile. The culprit is GM’s new 2.0-liter turbo I-4, which is down 28 hp and 37 lb-ft of torque versus the outgoing unit. Power delivery is smooth, and turbo lag is minimal; however, the new engine is barely adequate for a 3,930-pound car like the CT6. The 10-speed automatic is also poorly calibrated; in typical GM fashion, it shifts quickly but immediately goes to the highest gear, preventing you from taking advantage of the engine’s midrange torque. Road test editor Chris Walton noted that the engine likes to short shift well below the engine’s 7,000-rpm redline and sounds labored when pushed hard. There is a fuel economy payoff, though; our friends at EQUA Real MPG achieved 23.5/38.5 mpg city/highway during their tests. That’s a smidge lower in the city but significantly higher on the highway versus the EPA’s official 24/34 mpg rating.

Like many of its competitors, the 2019 Cadillac CT6 prioritizes comfort. The ride is compliant even over broken pavement, and the cabin is well-isolated from exterior noise. Body control and handling are commendable for its size, and floatiness is minimal over road imperfections; steering, on the other hand, feels disconnected. The CT6 finished the figure-eight course in 26.6 seconds with a 0.67 g average and generated 0.86 g on the skidpad. Testing director Kim Reynolds noted that the car is balanced but defaults to understeer when pushed hard. Stopping from 60 mph took 120 feet with minimal fade resistance. However, Walton noted that the pedal felt “wooden then springy.” Both Reynolds and Walton also observed that the CT6 nose-dives excessively during hard braking.

A suite of active driver assists, which includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert, comes standard on the Premium Luxury trim and higher. Most of those systems work discreetly in the background with the exception of lane keeping assist, which ping-pongs you in your lane, and an oversensitive rear cross-traffic alert system. Super Cruise, a semi-autonomous driving feature, is available only on all-wheel-drive-equipped CT6s on the Premium Luxury and higher grades.

The Cadillac CT6 has all the virtues you expect out of a big, luxurious sedan: comfortable, quiet, and spacious. However, when you put the sum of its parts together, it feels generic. The Audi A8 oozes cutting-edge technology and the Kia K900 punches way above its sticker price. Those looking for a luxury sedan with American style can consider the Lincoln Continental, and the Jaguar XJ remains eye-catching despite its age, driving with the agility of a smaller vehicle.
