Brexit impact on UK car industry
Rather than creating post after post about news of yet more job losses in the UK car industry, I decided to create one entry and keep it periodically updated. Before the EU referendum, experts unanimously agreed that if the UK was to leave the EU it would result in job loses under all scenarios. A so called “hard Brexit” probably resulting in pretty much the end of all UK based industry.
What was labelled “project fear” at the time, is now becoming bitter reality for thousands losing their jobs:

_ Note: This list shows jobs created in the EU as well as the ones lost in the UK. As the timeline shows, hiring people in one location is often followed by layoffs in the UK a year later. Thereby giving a pretty good indication of things to come. For example, if JLR is hiring 3000 people in Austria and 2800 in Slovakia, and the Halewood plant just happens to employ around 6000 people, you do the maths.

2018 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion: New Blood
Ahhh, August....our favorite month of the year.
We always look forward to August because it means that we're heading down to the Monterey Peninsula for Car Week! Gearheads make this pilgrimage every year and with different motivations, and there are many motivations. Our primary drive (pardon the pun) is the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. This year was particularly notable for a couple of reasons. The first thing to note is that this was the first Reunion since Laguna Seca signed a new primary sponsorship deal with WeatherTech, paving a way to a more stable future with many changes and improvements already underway. It also marks the first year that the event featured a Japanese manufacturer, and Nissan was more than willing and able to represent it's brand and to celebrate its 50th anniversary of corporate involvement in motorsports.
We applaud the organizers on their decision to choose Nissan/Datsun at the featured marque, not only because it is long overdue, but also because we feel that in order to keep events like this (and vintage racing in general) alive, it is imperative to bring new audiences. As the paddock clearly displayed, the Nissan/Datsun community were ready, willing and eager to show the crowd what the brand, its history and it's community are all about. More than 50 of the 551 total participants selected out of over 1,000 applicants based on authenticity and race provenance were attributed to the Nissan and Datsun brands.
Now we don't purport to be Nissan/Datsun fanboys or aficionados, though we do love a well executed 510, early Z cars, modern and ancient GTRs and just about anything with a little age and some fender mirrors and/or overfenders. That said, Nissan corporate and Nissan collector/driver/and media personality Adam Carolla brought the heat for the weekend.
The hottest of the heat, was the glorious 1969 Nissan R382 Group 7 racing car. Admittedly, we didn't even know if this cars existence, but now we have come to know and understand a part of Nissan's racing past. This 600 horsepower 6 liter DOHC monster beat out Porsche and Toyota to win the 1969 Japan Grand Prix. This thing is as lovely as it was menacing in its day. The example Nissan brought was understated and stunning.
The second car of note is one that many in our demographic have a soft spot for. For many of us, it's a treat to get to see a car we've driven a million times in any number of racing games and simulators. It's an even bigger geek-out when we get feast our eyes on one we've only seen in the digital realm, and one that we never thought we'd ever see in the flesh...er um carbon fiber. This thing was as impressive in real life as it is in any video game. The Nissan R390 GT1 road car was glorious from any/every angle. It was long, lean, sexy and powerful...everything needed to compete at Le Mans and everything it needed to achieve 220+ mph speeds. We won't soon forget being in the presence of the 3R90.
For those not familiar with Adam Carolla's vehicular exploits, let's just say he's kind of a big deal these days. Though his automotive tastes are broad and wide, he has a soft spot for classic Datsuns and Nissans, and he collects and races them to boot. Some of these cars (approximately 10 of his collection) were actively and successfully campaigned by actor and philanthropist (and King of Cool), Paul Newman. Carolla brought a few of these cars (and a vintage Hino hauler too!) from his collection to share. We got up close and personal to he and his 1988 Turbo Z on the pregrid, and it was glorious!
And among all of the vintage racing goodness from Nissan/Datsun was a car so new, it isn't even on sale yet. Straight from its debut at Goodwood appeared Nissan's collaboration with Italdesign, the GT-R50. This thing was cool...really cool! Yeah, it's gonna have turbos and like 700 horsepower, but that rear end! We came upon the car for the first time on one of the track's service roads. It was about to depart for one its numerous pressers. It was unmistakably GT-R...a bit reserved, but with great little details and styling queues...but then we got around back and then....WOW! Simple, shocking, amazing...that is all.
Not to be outdone by it's Japanese auto making rival, Mazda brought its "A" game too, as they have for the last several years. Under their prominently placed tent were several heavy hitters and crowd favorites. The two that stood out for us were the iconic, "Charge" liveried 1989 767B that competed at the 1989 24 hours of Le Mans race #wankel. The other Mazda on display was one that we've been waiting to see, in person, all racing season. We are unabashed fans of Reinhold Joest and were pumped when plans were made public that he was going to be in charge of Mazda's WeatherTech racing effort this year. We were thinking that our first opportunity to see it would be at the upcoming WeatherTech race at Laguna Seca. Imagine our surprise when we happened upon the gleaming ruby colored RT24-P. This thing is ridiculously good looking.
Mazda also treated, well everyone within 5 miles with working ears to a an audio display that has become somewhat of a tradition at the Reunion. At a quiet time in the afternoon's schedule, they rolled the aforementioned 767B, a 1990 787, a 1991 RX-7 IMSA GTO, and the spectacularly fantastically looking 1992 RX-792P into the sunshine for a rotary racing rev-off. The sound of all of those uniquely pitched beasts at once is unforgettable and loud....really really loud.
As has become the trend in recent years, the Reunion does more than just highlight a single featured car and/or manufacturer. It has become a social outing and showcase for manufacturers both great and small. This year featured significant displays by Audi, Jaguar, Ford, Singer/Michelin and Porsche. All in attendance were treated to up-close access to Ford's latest GT (and their first gen, both in Gulf/heritage livery), the New Audi e-tron BP 18 prototype, and the all new Jaguar I-Pace HSE (which also set the track's record for an unmodified electric vehicle (with Randy Pobst at the wheel), and yes, the drool-worthy new Singer you've been seeing all over social media! Yeah, the event is the "Historic Motorsports Reunion," but everyone seems to love the new stuff and commensurate car swag and test drives that come with them. We give a special shout out to Jaguar for providing sweet hats for anyone willing to give up their email address and automotive preferences!
THE SPECIAL DISPLAYS
As much as we love all that stuff, we don't make the three hour drive for any amount of new hardware. We're vintage car types, and this event is our hallowed ground, and did it ever deliver this year. We don't know how the quantity of cars stacks up to past years, but the paddock was as full as we've ever seen it, and the quantity of entrants was only exceeded their quality. This abundance made for larger than usual racing groups, thus more of what we all want to see. From the moment we arrived it was clear that this was a big one. The paddock was packed to capacity with cars spanning multiple eras and multiple discisplines of racings such as early IMSA GT cars to historic Formula 1 and the beast of Formula 5000.
Among the moments was two time Formula 1 World Champion Mika Hakkinen taking to the track in McLaren's 1995 Le Mans-winning F1 GTR for demonstration laps. The McLaren F1 GTR, based on the monumental road going F1 and still considered the greatest hyper car ever created. The F1 GTR even 28 years later still brings chills with the sound of its BMW V12 screaming around the track sounding just as vicious as it must have those years ago when it took the victory at the famous Le Mans circuit. For many at the event it was their first time to come within range of a car that set the standard for all that follow.
We commend our hosts at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, Nissan, all of the corporate sponsorship and track staff (both paid and volunteer) for putting on such a great show (and a special shout to Mother Nature for providing the spectacular weather!) Though we always fret about the future of vintage racing, this years Reunion showed the strong footing of this thing we love, at this place we love. Laguna Seca's much needed face lift coupled with the excellent choice of featured car/manufacturer, and the fact that the crowd was more diverse by every measure possible tells us the universe really wants more vintage racing. Life is good.
As is always the case, there is no way to condense the depth and breadth of Car Week, let alone this single event, into one story. We just give you our perspective and our musings and images from the few hours we spent at the track. Please take some time to look through the gallery below. The 3-D HUD technology is attractive to leading auto manufactures because it is compact, does not require eye tracking, and provides a deeper field of view than the existing HUD displays. With glasses-free 3-D technology, next-generation HUD units offer the possibility of full 3-D effects, projecting the images seen by drivers at safer distances from the windshield, therefore, causing less distraction. The 3-D AR HUD can display information at different distances depending on the driving speed (e.g., 40 m ahead when driving at 40 km/h in urban areas, 80 m ahead when driving at 80 km/h on highways).
The presence of any object can be detected with the help of 3-D projecting using sensors. This visually alerts the driver in advance, giving the driver additional time to make judgments and control the vehicle. Thus, the 3-D AR HUD is expected to reduce the accident rate and make driving safer. Currently, many HUD manufacturers, including WayRay, Continental, Visteon, and component providers, such as NVIDIA and Zecotek, are working on the development of 3-D and augmented reality HUDs. In 2018, Continental developed AR HUD with holographic projection by collaborating with DigiLens. Moreover, OEMs such as Toyota are focusing their R&D activities on 3-D HUD development. These factors will boost the growth of the 3-D HUD market.

Mercedes-Benz, BMW will duke it out over EVs

Cars For Sale: South Africa’s Best
A bit of a throwback, but herewith are the semi-finalists of the 2019/20 Cars.co.za Consumer Awards – powered by WesBank.
The awards programme recognises the best purchasing propositions in the respective categories of the new vehicle market.
“Vehicle purchases are amongst the biggest that consumers are likely to make in their lifetime,” said Ghana Msibi, executive head of sales and marketing at WesBank.
“Initiatives such as this offer credible opinions on the types of cars and features available in the market, and in so doing help consumers make informed decisions when choosing a new or used vehicle,” he said.
The 13 eventual category winners will be selected from the list of 65 vehicles, which includes model derivatives from 24 brands represented in the South African market.
All vehicles available on the South African market on September 1, 2019, were eligible, not only new products that were launched during the past 12 months.
Compared with the 2018/19 Cars Awards, the executive sedan category has been replaced with one that caters for premium-positioned crossovers.
The former Hot Hatch category (now named Fun Hatch) encompasses more affordable contenders and the price caps for the Premium SUV and Performance Car segments have been raised, it said.
“It is important to note that we analyse market changes proactively and adapt the categories to be better aligned with the South African consumer,” said Cars.co.za consumer experience manager Hannes Oosthuizen.
“With no new contenders in the Executive Sedan category, as well as very poor sales in that segment, we saw it fit to create a new category (to reflect growth and interest in upmarket crossovers) instead.
“Meanwhile there have been no new launches in the traditional hot hatch category, but there has been activity at a lower price point, so we’ve created a new category called Fun Hatch.”
And given the rapidly rising prices of cars for sale in Johannesburg, Oosthuisen said that sticking to a R1-million barrier for Premium SUV and Performance Car categories is no longer practical.
Volkswagen lead the charge in 2019/2020 again.
Even though 24 brands’ vehicles feature in the list of 65, five marques have more than three semi-finalists in the running for category honours.
Volkswagen has the most representatives (8), followed by BMW (6) and Audi, which has 5, although the A1 Sportback 40TFSI S Line is notably a semi-finalist in two separate categories.
Ford (5) and Toyota (4) round out the major manufacturers.

Fiat Chrysler Partners With Waymo on Self-Driving Delivery Vans Now, More Later
FCA and Waymo are expanding their four-year partnership with plans to put advanced self-driving technology in the Ram ProMaster commercial vehicle to deliver goods—an emerging trend in the self-driving vehicle world—and eventually roll out Level 4 autonomous tech across FCA’s global lineup.
The two have signed an exclusive agreement to develop and test class 1—3 light commercial vehicles. This is different from the original 2016 contract for Waymo to buy up to 62,000 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans for its self-driving ride-hailing service. With the first deal, FCA gained the huge fleet sale, and the start of a partnership, but did not gain rights to the equipment Waymo installed. Nor was it exclusive. Waymo has always said it wants to work with many players in the industry. Among its subsequent moves was the 2018 deal for 20,000 Jaguar I-Pace electric SUVs from Jaguar Land Rover for similar testing. And Waymo recently announced it is working with Volvo Cars Group to develop a self-driving electric vehicle designed for ride-hailing use.
The way Waymo, a division of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, works is it focuses on the artificial intelligence and hardware such as radar, lidar, and cameras which create, in effect, an automated “driver.” The automakers design, develop, and build the vehicles that all of this stuff and know-how goes into. Waymo did develop a prototype car called the Firefly before concluding the better path was to work with automakers.
This new deal takes the FCA-Waymo partnership to a new level that should benefit both companies. The ProMaster will be equipped with Level 4 Waymo Driver to be a driverless delivery van for commercial customers, including Waymo Via, an automated logistics business. Level 4 on the SAE autonomy scale is “High Automation” where the “vehicle is capable of performing all driving functions under certain conditions.” It sits just below SAE Level 5, the highest form of automation where no driver is ever necessary.
Is an Electric Ram ProMaster Coming?
Most companies use electric vehicles, which have an abundance of electronics already, as the base for autonomous vehicles. The Waymo news suggests the ProMaster van will go electric. That is a not a big speculative leap: The ProMaster is based on the European-market Fiat Ducato, which is adding an electric version, the E-Ducato, for 2020.
Waymo has been developing tech for commercial goods delivery for a while and among its more than 600 self-driving vehicles on the road to date are some Pacificas with the back seats removed as part of a pilot project to deliver packages for UPS. Importantly, Waymo has committed to deploying its Level 4 technology across FCA’s full global product portfolio. Again, in the past, Waymo just bought the fleets but was not obligated to share the tech it was developing and testing. FCA has not developed its own autonomous tech and is making Waymo its exclusive partner to supply systems across the FCA fleet.
Future Autonomous Vehicles Planned
Fiat Chrysler officials are not saying which additional vehicles beyond the ProMaster are first in line to add the autonomous Waymo Driver tech or provide a timeline, other than to say work has started to “imagine future FCA product for the movement of people and goods operated by Waymo Driver.”
“FCA was our first OEM partner, and we’ve come a long way together,” said Waymo CEO John Krafcik. “The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans were the first vehicles in our Waymo One fleet, and, guided by the Waymo Driver, have now safely and reliably driven more fully autonomous miles than any other vehicle on the planet. Today, we’re expanding our partnership with FCA with the Waymo Driver as the exclusive L4 autonomy solution for this global automotive company. Together, we’ll introduce the Waymo Driver throughout the FCA brand portfolio, opening up new frontiers for ride-hailing, commercial delivery, and personal-use vehicles around the world.”

Jaguar Land Rover recalls 44,000 cars over emissions

Jaguar Land Rover is recalling 44,000 cars in the UK over carbon dioxide emissions, the car maker has said.
Regulators found 10 models were emitting more of the greenhouse gas than they had been certified to emit.
The car maker will contact owners to arrange repairs, a JLR spokeswoman said.
JLR is facing a number of challenges at the moment, including a slump in demand for diesel cars and a sales slowdown in China.
The firm said it was a voluntary recall of certain 2016-2019 MY Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles fitted with two litre diesel or petrol engines.
The affected models are:
Some two-litre 2016 to 2018 Land Rover Discovery and Discovery Sport cars
Certain two litre Range Rover Evoque, Sport, and Velar cars
Jaguar E-Pace, F-Pace, F-Type, XE and XF cars.
Most models are petrol, while some are diesel.
Some of the models will need physical repairs in a dealership, while some will need software updates, the spokeswoman said.
“The modifications made to affected vehicles will be made free of charge and every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience to the customer during the short time required for the work to be carried out,” the firm added.
In January the firm confirmed it is cutting 4,500 jobs, with the substantial majority coming from its 40,000 strong UK workforce.
The firm has complained about uncertainty caused by Brexit.
Emissions have come under more scrutiny since Volkswagen’s diesel scandal.
Investors are pursuing the car giant for about about €9.2bn (£8.2bn) in damages, claiming the company should have come clean sooner about falsifying emissions data.
