Seven Cars Winning the Best Award for Exceptional Interior Design by Ward
Ward auto has bestowed the best interior awards for the eight best cars. The eight best internal awards are more like an opinion and fact in the auto world. The awards are for stretching new designs that would have been reserved for non-production concept cars a years ago, says Ward's managing editor Tom Murphy.
The 2018 models include value, creativity, comfort, fit, finish, ergonomics, design harmony, materials and technology in the 40 new interiors evaluated this year.
2018 Hyundai Kona Interior
Tumblr media
At 164 inches long, the Kona is 8 inches shorter than Ford Focus hatchback. It plays a price sensitive role in the market where competitors like the Honda HR-V and Toyota C-HR have minimal interiors. Hyundai has dressed the Kona with a splash of color.
Hyundai applied lime green around the vents and other places in a way that spices up a bare-bones interior.
2018 Chevrolet Equinox Interior
Tumblr media
Equinox is undoubtedly Chevy's top sellers. Designers have played with the interiors this time. They had some fun this time with the designs by giving swooping lines on the door trim and oblong air condition vents. The infotainment system is faster and easy to use. The equinox is a competition to vehicles like Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, which has become America's top-selling segment.
2018 Kia Stinger Interior
Tumblr media
Kia played big when it developed the Stinger, a luxury car that will offer an exceptional carrying capacity and a hatchback room. With useful interiors, plenty room, appealing materials and easy to use controls.
This will get consumers back into the big car business.
2018 Infinity QX50 Interior
Tumblr media
Infiniti's latest compact luxury SUV grabbed all the attention. You open the door and you will see a cream, brown and blue Ultrasuede open-pore maple wood trim that has a beautiful metallic and subtle look.
Automakers could not tone down its design, so they gave it bold and beautiful look.
2018 Ram 1500 Interior
Tumblr media
There was a time when pickups were trucks with vinyl seats with minimal comfort. The all-new Ram is designed with navy leather and cream contrast stitching. The underfloor storage is an innovative idea. The storage is built in such a way that fishers can stash all the catches and take home. The blue wood trim is so beautifully built that it looks like denim.
2018 Lexus LS 500 Interior
Tumblr media
Lexus is a significant new flagship in the sedan loaded with fancy interiors. The ornate interiors like hand-folded pleats and cut-glass in the door trim. This time it has made very bold color choices quite the opposite from the sober German hues. The color scheme makes it even more spectacular.
2018 Porsche Panamera s e-hybrid plug-in Interior
Tumblr media
There highly priced Panamera to its 680-hp drivetrain got some kudos interiors with the all-new infotainment system. You may end up skipping the spa with the best massaging seat in the world. The new Porsche has eliminated buttons with a clean new design. You will feel so good looking at the interiors, as the hideous buttons are gone.
Porsche has successfully integrated the latest features with a focus on the legendary driving experience.

Past its expiration date: Infiniti QX80 review
Tumblr media
Enlarge / The Infiniti QX80 on a cold winter day. (credit: Eric Bangeman)
As the old saying goes: you never get a second chance to make a first impression. When I climbed into the Infiniti QX80 for the first time, one of the first things I saw was a monochromatic LCD display smack-dab in the middle of the instrument panel. I looked at the Monroney sticker sitting on the passenger seat and saw a price tag north of $90,000. The juxtaposition of a display that would look at home in the decade-old cars in my garage with the luxurious interior trim left me with the impression that Infiniti made some odd choices with the QX80—an impression that I never managed to shake in my week with the vehicle.
The QX80 is the flagship of Infiniti's SUV lineup. It's a true full-size, three-row SUV, competing with the Mercedes GLS, Lexus LX, and Lincoln Navigator for the hearts and wallets of large families and folks who want a massive, spacious vehicle to tool around in. The QX80 underwent an overhaul for the 2018 model year, getting an exterior redesign that elongated the body and made it appear longer. For 2019, Infiniti added a Limited model with dark, machine-finished 22-inch wheels.
Pricing for the QX80 starts at $65,100 for a front-wheel-drive model; if you want all-wheel drive, you'll need to fork out another $3,000. Our review model was the QX80 Limited, which comes with all the fixin's—theater package, driver-assist, the aforementioned 22-inch wheels, and more—and a price tag of $91,450. This expensive beast is powered by a 5.6-liter V8 capable of 400hp (298kW) at 5,800rpm and 413lb-ft (560Nm) of torque at 4,000rpm. That's paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission, which I prefer to the continuously variable transmission in the QX50 and QX60. If you need to drive your QX80 over some nasty terrain, it has a crawl ration of 1.0 in 4WD high and 2.7 in 4WD low.

Game of ‘Thrones’: 5 Questions With Infiniti’s Phil O’Connor
Infiniti is bidding to continue its strong 2017 sales performance into the new year with a marketing campaign for a timely upgrade to its big QX80 SUV.
Overhauls of large, luxury utility vehicles are busting out all over—Lincoln’s Navigator and Lexus’s extended RX among them—to take advantage of the robust U.S. market for SUVs in an era of reasonable gasoline prices, a growing economy, and a millennial generation that is forming families and in need for more spacious vehicles.
On the mainstream side, Subaru and Volkswagen are bringing out entirely new vehicles that meet the seven-passenger criterion. So the timing for Infiniti’s best-ever version of its QX80 large SUV couldn’t be better. And to distinguish the new QX80 in a segment with growing competition, the Nissan-owned luxury brand has decided to select a particular feature for “Thrones,” its first national U.S. TV campaign—its sumptuous seats.
youtube
Infiniti has been doing well this year in the US, through November selling 14% more vehicles compared with a year earlier. Part of the gain can be attributed to some new products, but also Infiniti seems to have sharpened its brand image more these days than in quite some time. It’s readily identifiable again even in an increasingly competitive luxury-car set in the US market.
It’s already looking ahead to the North American International Auto Show by teasing a new concept car coming to Detroit, along with its Spring 2018 QX50:
Just because it won’t fit under the tree, doesn’t mean it can’t make the list. Coming Spring 2018. #QX50 #HappyHolidays http://pic.twitter.com/xrpejn7VHu
— INFINITI USA (@INFINITIUSA) December 23, 2017
The next stage of evolution coming to @NAIASDetroit. #conceptcar http://pic.twitter.com/Grm0sMsneu
— INFINITI USA (@INFINITIUSA) December 21, 2017
But first, the QX80 new year’s “Thrones” campaign, about which we spoke with Phil O’Connor, Infiniti’s director of marketing communications and media, about the value proposition and messaging for Infiniti these days:
Infiniti has a lot of momentum these days. What are you seeing in the U.S. luxury auto sector right now?
The market growth has slowed down, but it’s still at a very healthy level. We’re still very bullish. We’ve been among the fastest-growing luxury brands in the last year and moving forward we think that things are only going to get better with a slew of new products. We launched a new Q50 in the fall; now we have the new QX80; and in 2018, there will be the all-new QX50, which will be a compact, five-seat CUV.
youtube
What are you trying to accomplish with this QX80 campaign?
With regard to the QX80 we’re always trying to do a couple of things. We’re trying to launch a new product, in this case a flagship SUV, and do it in a very bold, Infiniti way. We’re also always looking to build momentum around our umbrella brand of Infiniti. We’re 30 years in the market but relatively new compared with some competitors so we’re still trying to clarify what that brand stands for. The best opportunity to do that is when we have new product launch.
youtube
How does that approach fit “Thrones”?
At Infiniti we talk about being “human, daring and forward.” We’re in touch with our consumers and we’re an emotional brand. We’re forward-looking, not rooted in the past, and we’re daring in that we’re trying to make bold moves.
If you look at this spot specifically, in this segment things like cargo and carrying capacity are table stakes. But with QX80 we’ve got a few things that we believe set us apart: luxuriousness and detail in interior and the styling.
So we wanted to make a statement about those things that differentiate us in an Infiniti way. The spot is talking about the history of thrones and is a nod to human history, and plays on that in an interesting way by making the point that the interior of the QX80 is a luxurious space for a large number of people. This will comfortably seat a large number of people.
There are at least seven seats with the option of a second-row bench seat, which makes it eight. That’s one of the reasons why in the end of the spot we have the cast get into the interior, because you can see six adults. We want to communicate that the third row is a real place to sit, not just a place to put young children.
Are you specifically trying to woo millennials with this campaign?
The creative—the music, the way it’s filmed—will break through. We measure ourselves on breakthrough as a real imporant metric for creative. Memorable? Reinforcing the Infiniti brand? We think between the film and music and the voiceover it will break through. As for media (buying), we are employing new ways to target specific targets—it’s a mix of broad reach and also new ways to target folks, through digital or addressable TV. We’re testing and deploying them to serve the ad to specific audiences that we want to reach.
Customer experience has become a huge focus, especially for luxury brands. What has Infiniti been doing in that regard?
When you look at the progress that Infiniti dealers have made in customer satisfaction, we’re among the leaders in every metric. That’s a really important part of our success: As we broaden our portfolio and bring customers back for repeat purchases, they’re getting the kind of service that the luxury buyer expects.

As we move into 2020 drivers are looking for replacements for their old gas hogs and many are looking towards the new models boasting some amazing fuel efficiency ratings. In regards to security, MKC will now receive more standard systems. The Worst Luxury Cars of 2018
Drivers who buy new cars today usually don’t have to worry about whether the car will break an axle on the side of the road, or whether its brakes will give out on a steep hill. We can reasonably expect to get air conditioning and heated front seats as standard items, and we can expect that the technology inside the car will work intuitively and will enhance, rather than inhibit, the driving experience.
And yet. We still find plenty to complain about. After all, not all modern luxury car are created equal. Some have shoddy interior materials lining their walls, others lack the power and torque to make them equal to competitors. Others are just plain boring. Whereas yesterday I wrote about the best cars I drove last year, today I’ll give you the worst.
Lexus LC 500
My quibble with the Lexus LC 500 isn’t about how it looks on the outside. I like its swooped body, big wheels, and low, smooth roofline. If I had to buy a Lexus, it might even be this one. It’s the most exciting of that family. Unfortunately, that isn’t saying much.
No, my problem with the LC 500 is twofold: For one thing, it simply doesn’t compete, performance- and craftsmanship-wise, with others of its type and price point. Compare it to the Acura NSX and the Porsche 911, and you’ll find each of those a much more pleasurable and emotional experience to drive. They’re precise and immediate when you turn the steering wheel and when you press the brakes. They’re quick and sharp: It’s as if they anticipate what you’ll want to do.
The LC 500, on the other hand, takes a beat to digest your request and then, maybe, it’ll get back to you. It just doesn’t have the visceral feel of guts under that hood or aggression in its gears. It’s lukewarm.
Second, and more annoying, the interior of the LC 500 feels plastic and lightweight. The screen and technology system is so bad it equals those of the Cadillac lineup, which is pretty terrible. The Range Rover Velar contains the most exceptional example on the market today—yes, even beating out Tesla—while the screen controls and performance in Lexus’s LC 500 feel light years behind the times.
The “touchpad” at the bottom of the center console and the overall vertically oriented design will annoy. Have you ever heard anyone say: “I’d like to have to use a semi-responsive, tiny, black flat screen set near my knee when I drive?”
The technology is imprecise at best. And certainly not intuitive. In fact, the one from this Lexus made our Bloomberg Businessweek story about the best and worst car touchscreens on the market today.
Audi S4
Here’s the problem with the Audi S4: It’s boring. Both inside and out. All right, that’s not a crime, but it’s inexcusable in this day and age. Tesla makes an electric sedan that is more interesting, visually, than this car is, for goodness sake.
It has a ho-hum V6 engine that produces 354 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, which, admittedly, is 164 more horsepower and 133 more pound-feet of torque than the A4 model.
That translates to a zero-to-60 sprint time of 4.4 seconds. The base-level BMW M3 can do 60mph in 3.9 seconds, and the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG can do it in 4 seconds flat. There’s really no comparison.
Anyway, as I say in my review, the S4 is a good example of what the generic modern luxury sedan is—safe and rounded off, like a droning PSA read over the loudspeaker at an airport: blah, blah, blah. Take the badges off, and I’ll bet you $100 you couldn’t identify this as an Audi.
Audi is a great automaker. I expect more from it than this. You should, too.
Aston Martin DB11 Volante
You are probably surprised to see a gorgeous convertible from such an esteemed brand on this list. But stick with me; I have no quibbles with how the DB11 Volante drives. Its V8 engine will hit 62 miles per hour in four seconds and has a top speed of 187mph. A cursory glance at one as it passes can send shivers of happiness down the spine.
But spend any amount of time with it, and—from the inside out—the design of the car is difficult to embrace. With the top up, the canvas cover looks stretched to threads over the infinitesimally small rear seats. Hung wide across the car’s low body, it compromises every otherwise beautiful body curve the brand has worked so hard to develop. It diminishes half the sight lines from behind the wheel and makes everything feel cramped and too busy inside. If I owned this car, I’d literally never have the top up, for fear of ruining its otherwise-fine exterior angles.
On the inside, too, you run into trouble. With the top up, the interior, which seemed relaxed when open to the breezy air, suddenly begins to feel stressful. This is because Aston Martin offers too much finishing: the options can be garish and gaudy, with multiple leathers and woods and stitching colorations on the seats and doors and dash. From the (uncomfortably stiff and straight) front seats, it’s like sitting inside a cramped karaoke bar with no escape in sight. And I wouldn’t wish the back seat on anyone I cared about—even remotely.
If you want an Aston Martin convertible, steer yourself toward the Vanquish S Volante. It offers more space and sight. If you go for the Volante, keep the top down and forget about driving in the rain.
Infiniti QX50
Infiniti has recently debuted a special “Project Black” hybrid sports car inspired by Formula 1. It has 563 horsepower and a hybrid-electric powertrain developed by Renault. That is the best car Infiniti makes—and it’s not even available for normal consumers. On the other side of the family table, so to speak, is the QX50 SUV.
This SUV looks large but comes with only four cylinders and 268 horsepower. (Press the gas and you’ll feel the anemic response.) It rolls and lumbers around corners. The interior cabin displays look as if they came directly from 2008: as dull as the exterior body, except for the multiple, differing fonts used in graphics displays, which are disconcerting.
The QX50 has room enough inside its cabin, as well as adequate storage space. And it does drive. I guess that’s something.
Acura RDX
I can’t imagine a reason you’d buy the Acura RDX.
The RDX has a few more horsepower and torque than the entry variants of the Porsche Macan and BMW X3. But the fit and finish inside feel cheap. The robotic exterior appearance, with the awkward front grille, saps the car’s overall appeal. Then there’s the lackluster handling, and the quirky design of the technology altogether. It’s not competing with the best of the crossover crowd.
The entertainment and climate apparatus, with touchpad and center control knob (the “Acura True Touchpad Interface”), is beat only by Lexus for weirdness of design. Behind the wheel, the lackluster handling and dearth of any discernible personality or driving character—a throaty engine note or meaner torque would be nice!—earn it side-note status at best.
For the discerning buyer, the small Porsche or BMW SUVs would be worth considering. Or better yet, if you want to save money, buy the exceptional Volvo XC60. For now, skip the RDX.

Driving the New CX-5 Proves Mazda Can Compete as a Premium Brand
With the addition of a couple of new trims to the 2019 Mazda CX-5 crossover lineup, it’s now clear: Mazda plans to compete directly with premium vehicles like the Acura RDX and Infiniti QX50.
The premium market has plenty of appeal. Higher price tags often correlate with higher profit margins, and finding buyers with more spending power easily translates into higher sales prices.
But breaking into the luxury market can be tricky. Just ask Kia, Hyundai, or even Chrysler. All these brands have attempted to break into the premium car market in one way or another. Kia debuted the $60,000 K900 in 2015 and hoped to reap the benefits of having a high-end (and high-margin) option in its lineup. But while the K900 offered luxury in spades, it also had a Kia badge on the hood. Convincing shoppers to view that logo as a viable luxury symbol has been challenging, and as a result, the company has sold barely 5,000 of them.
Hyundai had a similar story with the Equus sedan, and has since placed an even bigger bet by debuting a luxury brand to move its metal. While the new Genesis G70 has earned plenty of praise for its combination of technology and comfort, it’s still yet to be seen whether the Genesis brand will succeed, as Lexus was able to when it arrived in the early 1990s.
Breaking into the luxury market is not the only hard part, either. It’s also hard to stick around. Even companies historically associated with premium cars, like Chrysler and Buick, have seen how quickly their stars can fall in the eyes of American consumers, and how hard it can be to regain lost prestige.
So, how does Mazda expect to measure up against established players? Well, the CX-5 Signature and Grand Touring Reserve both fill their interiors with supple leather and upscale touches, like layered wood trim and satin chrome accents. The CX-5’s MazdaConnect technology suite has a European feel, too, employing a rotary controller to handle user inputs, and the system is (finally) equipped to run Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
But simply adding leather and smartphone connectivity isn’t always enough. Luckily, Mazda may have the secret ingredient. When premium-car shoppers shop for a car, they don’t just consider upholstery and infotainment, they look for a refined and engaging driving experience—the car is expected to deliver accurate feedback through the steering wheel, the pedals, and the chassis. And at Mazda, every part of the car comes second to perfecting how it drives.
youtube
The company’s Jinba Ittai engineering philosophy is grounded in the idea that a car should act as an extension of the driver’s body. And this is clear every time you drive the CX-5. The steering is well weighted, the 6-speed automatic transmission shifts predictably, and even the all-wheel-drive (AWD) system is tuned to provide a smooth and consistent drive. Rather than reacting to slippery conditions, the system works proactively, relying on inputs ranging from wheel-spin sensors to the car’s thermometer and windshield wipers to deliver traction and stability without disrupting the car’s natural driving dynamics.
Premium vehicles are expected to have premium engines, and as such, drivers will find the larger CX-9’s turbocharged 2.5-liter engine under the hood of top-tier CX-5s. Like the car’s suspension, the engine has been tuned for real-world performance and not hypothetical benchmarks. Zero-to-sixty measurements were replaced with freeway-passing tests, and the turbocharger employs dynamic pressure technology, simulating a person’s thumb over a garden hose to modulate pressure to keep its output strong and steady.
In the end, it’s hard to describe the CX-5’s driving experience as anything other than balanced. This car doesn’t lay on the power unnecessarily, and the steering never feels simulated.
Mazda has long been credited for building cars that reward driver engagement, and it has recently earned a reputation for adding upscale features at relatively bargain prices. With the CX-5, those two roads have met, resulting in a car ready to steal market share from established premium automakers. But will it succeed? The Mazda CX-5 seems to have everything a luxury-car buyer would want, except for an expensive logo on the steering wheel. So, while Mazda may be fully capable of building a premium vehicle, there is a final question left to answer: Will consumer perception of the Mazda logo keep it off shopping lists filled with Acuras and Infinitis?

2019 Nissan Murano: Comfy and Posh, as Before
NAPA, California — As car enthusiasts, it’s a bit difficult to know what to make of the Nissan Murano. On one hand, it’s comfortable, surprisingly posh, and doesn’t look like anything else on the road. On the other hand, it’s dull to drive, doesn’t have any “killer apps” that could distinguish it even more, and doesn’t look like anything else on the road.
Your author thinks of the stand-out styling as a good thing, and aesthetics remain at the fore as part of the Murano’s 2019 update. Along with the Maxima, the Murano has just been subjected to a refresh, that cyclical ritual in which vehicles get a few appearance tweaks and a couple of new features, and provide an excuse for the marketers to scream “ALL-NEW!” in the advertising.
That said, if we can call a cease-fire on our own cynicism, we will happily admit that the designers have been good to the Murano. The restyled headlights and new lower-grille treatment make the extroverted Murano stand out even more, and the revised taillights fit the design better than the old ones. Inside, there’s good news and bad. Good: Higher trim levels get enhanced seat upholstery with a nice diamond-quilt pattern, similar to what sister brand Infiniti uses on their vehicles. It’s one of several touches that make the Murano feel a lot more like a luxury vehicle than a blue-collar five-seater. Bad: The cool door-and-dash trim material used on the old Murano—it sort of reminded us of white, swirly bowling balls—is gone, replaced by less-distinctive wood trim.
Most of the other changes are subtle as glass and about as easy for the consumer to see. New safety features include automatic emergency braking in both directions of travel, lane-departure warning, and automatic high beams. The Murano already gets Nissan’s Distance Control Assist system, an autonomous co-pilot of sorts that will apply the brakes for you even in normal driving situations. The Murano now gets a pair of USB Type C ports, and the navigation maps can be updated over a Wi-Fi connection for free for three years (you have to pay thereafter).
In terms of the hardware that makes it go, there are no changes. The 3.5-liter V-6 engine carries over, as does the continuously variable automatic transmission that drives either the front or all four wheels. It’s difficult for us to say anything too negative about the VQ-series V-6, which is an old and dear friend, outside of the oft-stated desire for more refinement at higher rpm. Indeed, the instant pull of a stout six-cylinder engine is a novelty in these turbocharged times. But the 260-hp rating—unchanged since the current Murano made its debut in 2015—reads more like a punchline. You’d think Nissan could at least fit the direct-injected version of the engine from the Pathfinder, where it delivers 284 horsepower and meets more stringent emissions standards—but it didn’t.
The Nissan Murano isn’t as dull to drive as its Rogue or Rogue Sport lineup mates, with most of the additional verve—marginal though it may be—coming courtesy of the torquey engine, and it is generally comfortable and possessed of a smooth, steady ride. But we can remember the days when Nissan products could be reliably counted on to serve up an extra dose of sportiness, and we miss them.
That said, we did marvel at what an upscale experience the Murano offers to its occupants. Our Four Seasons stable includes a top-of-the-line Infiniti QX50 with the extra-cost Autograph interior package, and despite the Murano’s more pedestrian dash layout—which, if not exactly cutting edge, works exceptionally well—it’s instantly obvious that the two cars are closely related, and that a lot of Infiniti has rubbed off on the Murano.
Our motto here at Automobile is No Boring Cars, and if we’re talking about the driving experience and nothing else, then the Nissan Murano is a snooze. But we also concern ourselves with the finer things in life, and we have to tip our hat to the Murano’s noble demeanor. When you consider its class, it delivers a lot of prestige for the price. And for better or for worse, it’s a unique island in a sea of lookalike cars. If comfort and setting yourself apart are high on your list of priorities, you could do worse than the new Murano.
