Manual Hatchback Throwdown: Volkswagen Golf or Mazda3?
It’s a rare treat when any vehicle arrives in the MotorTrend press fleet with its driver’s footwell crowded with three pedals, so when VW sent us a 2020 Volkswagen Golf TSI with a stick, we couldn’t resist comparing it with another manual “warm hatch” in our fleet: our Machine Grey long-term 2020 Mazda3 hatchback. Yes, we’ve all seen the eighth-generation Golf, which is on sale in Europe already, but it looks like it’s not coming here until the 2022 model year, so for now, our updated 2015 Car of the Year soldiers on. How competitive is it, in its most elemental stick-shifted form?
How Do the Mazda3 and Volkswagen Golf TSI Prices Compare?
This is the Borneo pygmy elephant in the garage: Major pruning of the model lines and options availability at both Mazda and VW means the manual versions of these two now come pretty much as mono-spec cars—the Mazda, available in 2018 with a stick in 2.0-liter Sport and 2.5 liter Touring trims priced from $20,240 to $21,735, now only comes loaded with the 2.5-liter engine, the premium package, and no factory options aside from paint colors (which can add between $200 and $595), plus the choice of black or red leather seats.
As recently as last year, VW sold manual Golf TSIs in S or SE trim and offered a $1,295 driver-assistance package that included adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, auto high-beams, and other goodies that would have better matched our loaded Mazda’s price and equipment level. But for 2020, Golf stick options are similarly limited to color and a handful of port-installed doodads at a spec level that’s somewhere between the former S and SE grades. So, at $24,115 our Vee-Dub is $4,330 cheaper than the current going rate for our Mazda3, whereas last year’s more comparably equipped Golf TSI would have been just $1,775 cheaper, and they could have been at parity in 2018 (with a 1.8-liter turbo in the VW). The more ideal head-to-head might be with a base Golf GTI manual (with plaid cloth seats!), but if you can find a stripper S model, the GTI manual starts at $29,515 and can top $37 grand.
Which Is faster, the Mazda3 or Volkswagen Golf TSI?
It’ll come as no surprise to read that the 1.4-liter turbo in the Golf, hitching 3.3 more pounds up to each of its 147 horses ran 0.8 second slower to 60 mph (7.7 versus 6.9 seconds) and 0.9 slower through the quarter mile (16.1 seconds at 88.1 mph versus 15.2 seconds at 93.0 mph). That would surprise you more had you been behind the wheel of each, because the torque curves are so different. The little turbo’s 184 lb-ft of peak boost arrives at just 1,400 rpm while the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter doesn’t achieve its 186 lb-ft until 4,000 revs, which forces you to wring that engine out more and deprives the driver of that rush of turbo torque we’re getting pretty used to. The bigger-lunged Mazda engine is also slightly coarser in its delivery than the wee Golf’s four. For the record, that fully loaded $37,415 GTI manual hits those marks in 6.2 seconds and 14.7 seconds at 98.6 mph.
Which Stick Is More Fun to Row, Mazda3 or Volkswagen Golf?
As someone whose right wrist, elbow, and shoulder muscle memory stretches back to E34 and E39 BMW 5 Series, the Honda S600 and S2000, not to mention myriad Mazda MX-5 Miatas, let’s just say that neither of these transverse front-drive cable-operated shifters conjures words like “sublime” or “delightful mechanical precision” the way the above longitudinal rear-drive sticks used to. That having been said, while pressing each car equally hard over the same lovely set of local hilly twists, the Mazda3’s shifter presented some difficulty on quick 3–2 downshifts more than once, and the Golf’s did not. It’s also our sad duty to report that there’s no golf-ball shift knob in the TSI; you must spring for the GTI (or troll the aftermarket) to get that treat.
Which One Handles Better, Mazda3 or Volkswagen Golf?
Here again, the Golf TSI competes with two tire/wheel sizes tied behind its back. The Mazda3’s wider, lower-profile V speed-rated 215/45R18 TOYO Proxes A40 tires are stickier and more aggressive than the Golf’s fuel-efficiency and tread-wear optimized H-rated 205/55R16 Bridgestone Ecopia EP422 Plus shoes. Still, the measurable difference is less than 3 percent in lateral g cornering grip (0.85 to 0.83 g), and 5 percent in a straight-line braking from 60 mph (118 feet for the Mazda, 124 for the VW). Neither is a paragon of road feel, however. As a journalist, I’m supposed to sense some deficiency in the Mazda3’s new twist-beam suspension relative to the multilink rear setups in the Golf and the previous 3, and OK, if you pay super close attention on certain cross-car bump events that hit both rear wheels in a turn, maybe there’s a hint of discombobulation or sideways skitter. Maybe. And maybe the mysterious G-Vectoring control that trims power slightly on corner entry to load the front tires serves to mask potential bad behavior. By and large, they both scooted around our backroad ring pretty darned well.
Mazda3 vs. Volkswagen Golf: How Does the Ride Compare?
The VW’s taller tires cushion bigger bumps a bit better, but road textures read through this older chassis a bit more noticeably than in the new Mazda. That having been said, a few of the same bumps excited some dash trim vibration on the Mazda3 that was absent in the VW. The seats are similarly cosseting, though the Mazda leather feels nicer than the VW’s perforated leatherette.
Mazda3 vs. Volkswagen Golf: Which Cockpit Is Nicer?
No question—the Mazda3’s interior looks $8,000 richer at half that price premium. Mazda has been trying to cast itself as the Japanese Audi where interior design and execution are concerned, and the company is making great progress along those lines. Every major surface above the armrests is soft to the touch, and much of it looks hand sewn with contrast stitching. There’s a tasteful chrome strip running the width of the dash, a fancy head-up display, an 8.8-inch color display with rotary push-knob control (just like on an Audi!), and rich red leather. Oh, and the cover for the standard glass sunroof is opaque, whereas the VW’s lets light in.
Our VW featured a beige and black contrasting interior that is generally pleasing to look at, but way more of it is composed of hard plastic, the seats make no secret of their “leatherette” vinyl composition, and the instrument cluster is basically two needle gauges framing a prehistoric low-res two-color driver-information display that now seems as jarring as the Golf’s lack of a three-flash-to-pass function on the turn signal. Naturally, there’s no HUD. One interesting Volkswagen “advancement” is the presence of a USB-C port. Just one. For the whole car. And no old-fashioned USB-A ports into which we all have a million plugs that fit.
Mazda3 vs. Volkswagen Golf: How Do the Back Seats and Cargo Areas Compare?
This average-height (5-foot-10) body fits behind itself easily in both, but there’s a good fist’s worth of surplus head space overhead in the VW (perhaps in part because its sunroof panel slides back outside the roof, not underneath it as in the Mazda). The big rear side windows and lower, level beltline pay off in way better outward visibility in the VW, but a lower cushion provides less thigh support. Both offer 60/40 split rear seat backs, fold-down armrests, and each conveniently attaches the middle passenger’s shoulder belt to the seatback, rather than offering a detachable roof-mounted one. Here again, the ambiance is vastly richer in the Mazda, with the same contrast-stitched soft material and all hard plastics relegated to hip level and below. The VW’s rear seat is bigger, though, offering 1.6 inches more headroom and a half-inch each of leg- and shoulder room relative to the Mazda. Cargo wise, the VW fits a bit more (2.7 cubes with the seats up, 6.6 with them down) and offers a two-position load floor for a bit of bonus space. You also get four cargo tie-down loops and two bag hooks, and a 12-volt power outlet—none of which Mazda provides.
So Which Should You Buy, the Mazda3 or Volkswagen Golf?
How much do you love cars, and to what extent do you follow your head or your heart when purchasing one? If you’re a hard-nosed pragmatist researcher looking to stretch the dollars farthest, the VW clearly makes the most sense. It gets better gas mileage, has a bigger back seat and trunk, and costs less. You probably won’t mind much that it’ll start to look seven years old late next year. If you love cars and you’re not in a position to spend the extra to stretch to a GTI manual, you’ll surely relish looking back at the infinitely sexier Mazda. It comes from the Spanish outfit Fuel, who are no strangers to these pages. As well as building classy customs, Fuel are famous for organizing the annual Scram Africa expedition—a 4,000 km dirt tour running through North Africa.

Stagg is a one-man band, although he has history in the moto industry: he raced bikes in the 90s, and has worked at Smoked Garage in Brisbane for a couple of years—building mostly bobbers and hardtail conversions. He’s also worked for Holden Special Vehicles, amping up his engineering and fabrication skills still further.
The styling is spot-on, the fit and finish is superb, and it looks like something that Yamaha could build tomorrow. And maybe that’s the source of its appeal: this MT-07 is not an impractical fantasy, but a machine that could happily sit in a showroom.
The stock MT-07 is very much a ‘Marmite’ bike, with styling that polarizes opinion. But Stagg, working with Brisbane shop Black Cycles, has shown it’s possible to give the MT a new set of clothes with wide appeal.

EDITOR’S NOTE The toughest part of these roundups is seeing the bikes that didn’t quite make it—because a lot of them are personal favorites. The winners are bikes that scored highly across all criteria, smashing not only page views, but also social shares across all major platforms.
There were a few bikes that just missed the cut because they didn’t have the “full hand” for some reason, even if they scored hugely on one or two other criteria.
This year, that included Jake Drummond’s Yamaha MT-07, VTR’s BMW S1000RR and S1000XR pair, Krom Works’ Royal Enfield Continental GT 650, Craig Rodsmith’s front-wheel-drive motorcycle, and JvB-Moto’s Yamaha XSR900.
It’s also worth noting that both Triumph and Honda seem to have some catching up to do, while Yamaha and Royal Enfield are on the rise. As are builders from the Southeast Asia region.

2019 Honda WR-V, Amaze, Jazz Exclusive edition launched in India
Honda has launched limited-run Exclusive editions for three models in its India line-up – the Amaze compact sedan, WR-V crossover and Jazz premium hatchback. These special-edition models are visually different from the original models they are based on (inside and out) but are mechanically unchanged. At Rs 7.87-8.97 lakh, Rs 9.35-10.48 lakh and Rs 9.23 lakh, the Amaze, WR-V and Jazz Exclusive editions cost about Rs 12,000-19,000 more than their respective top variants.
For all three cars, the Exclusive edition is based on the respective car's top-spec variant – the WR-V VX MT the Amaze VX MT and the Jazz VX petrol-CVT. Honda’s 90hp, 1.2-litre petrol motor is shared between the three new models. The Amaze and WR-V Exclusive editions also get the option of a 100hp, 1.5-litre diesel motor. Interestingly, the manual-transmission Jazz is not on offer as an Exclusive edition. The equipment list and safety kit on the Exclusive models are shared with their range-topping counterparts.
In terms of updates, the Amaze Exclusive edition has black wheel-caps, unique seat covers, illuminated door sills, a sliding front armrest and console box, and a new logo. The exterior of the WR-V Exclusive edition gets a blackened rear spoiler with an LED light, unique body graphics and a new emblem, while the interior sports unique seat covers and illuminated door sills. The Jazz CVT Exclusive is equipped with black alloy wheels, a tailgate spoiler, body graphics and a new emblem on the outside and new seat covers and illuminated door sills on the inside. All three Exclusive edition models will only be available in two exterior paint options – “Radiant red” and “Orchid white”.
While a number of accessories on the Exclusive editions are dealer-fitted, some bits come straight from the Honda factory. Elements such as the Jazz’s alloy wheels will be fitted from the factory while the tailgate spoiler on the hatchback and its crossover sibling will be painted black by the dealer.
The special-edition models are expected to help Honda dealers increase sales of its models before the end of the financial year 2018-19. The Amaze has been seeing increasing competition from the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Dzire (still the current segment-leader in sales) and recently launched Ford Aspire facelift, while the Jazz’s rivals – the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Hyundai i20 – were updated just a few weeks ago.
In coming weeks, the Japanese carmaker is expected to bring its all-new Civic executive sedan to our market to rival the likes of the Toyota Corolla Altis and Skoda Octavia.

Adam Carolla’s Miura SV and Fangio’s Ferrari 290MM Bring Big Bucks at Petersen Auction
There’s no doubt Los Angeles is a premier hub of popular car culture, and the Petersen Automotive Museum is a locus where just that is on display all year round. When RM Sotheby’s (which keeps a Southern California office) announced an auction at the Petersen, we were only surprised it hadn’t been done sooner. The sale felt more like an automotive-themed holiday party than an auction, with many well-known local enthusiasts in the room to socialize rather than to buy a car, yet plenty of vehicles did in fact find new homes. In all, 54 of the 68 vehicles offered were sold, yielding a 79 percent sell-through rate and more than $39 million in total sales. Here are eight cars that caught our eye.
1971 Lamborghini Miura SV | Sold $2,005,000
This is a gorgeous example of the final official version of the Miura, the SV. We previewed this car a little while back, and it was consigned by television and radio personality (and big Lamborghini enthusiast) Adam Carolla, who kept it in his Southern California collection for several years. The price paid reflects the SV’s status as the last and best of the Miura range, with just 150 SV examples ever built.
1956 Ferrari 290 MM | Sold, $22,005,000
The star of the sale, this ’56 290 MM was a Scuderia Ferrari factory racer for the 1956 and ’57 seasons and was driven by some of Ferrari’s most prolific drivers: Phil Hill, Olivier Gendebien, Peter Collins, Juan Manuel Fangio, and Wolfgang von Trips, to name several. The car, chassis No. 0628, finished second at the 1956 Mille Miglia with its original 3.5-liter four-cylinder engine before being fitted with a series of V-12 engines the following year and finishing third overall at the 1000 KM of Buenos Aires. Several years ago, it received a full factory restoration by the Ferrari Classiche department to its 1957 12 Hours of Sebring livery. The price here was driven by that provenance and the fact the car carried original bodywork, engine, and transmission; it ranks as one of the top 10 most valuable cars ever sold at auction.
1965 Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 Shooting Brake | Sold, $313,000
Starting life as a lowly four-seat Ferrari, this 330 GT 2+2 was transformed in 1967 into the wild “shooting brake” coupe it is today by Luigi Chinetti Jr., son of the famous U.S. Ferrari importer. The styling was drafted by Bob Peak, an American illustrator, and turned into reality by Carrozzeria Vignale in Turin. Chinetti Jr. himself drove the car for several years, and since then, it has been presented around the world by subsequent owners, including enthusiast musician Jay Kay of Jamiroquai. Pretty it ain’t, but in a city full of be-hatched Ferrari FFs, this stands out.
1962 Ed Roth “Mysterion” re-creation | Sold, $246,400
Ed Roth was a legend of Southern California “kustom” car culture, and many of his greatest show cars were produced in the 1960s not terribly far from the Petersen Automotive Museum. The original Ed Roth–designed Mysterion was parted out after many showings and never actually ran, but this re-creation was made as a tribute to the original and is actually drivable. One of the 390-cubic-inch Ford V-8s runs and powers the car while the other simply appears to. More than a car, this is a work of art. Read more about it here.
2018 Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Villa d’Este | Sold, $637,500
British automaker Aston Martin and Italian design firm Zagato have a long history together, the most popular collaboration being the DB4 GT Zagato of the 1960s. This is the company’s most recent partnership, having debuted at the famed Villa d’Este Italian concours in 2016. Just 99 were produced and only 15 made it stateside, with this 50-mile car being one of them. The classic Zagato elements are there, “double-bubble” roof and all, but we can’t help think this is more caricature than genuinely pretty car. Nevertheless, the market spoke, and this V-12–powered Aston found itself a new owner.
1967 Toyota 2000GT | Sold, $511,000
The 2000GT is a Raymond Loewy–designed sports car that Toyota hoped would show the automotive world what the brand was capable of. While the specs were impressive—a twin-cam, six-cylinder engine pushing 150 hp with a 2,400-pound curb weight—the car was more expensive than Porsche’s 911 and Jaguar’s E-type. Just 351 were ever built; this is one of the 180 right-hand-drive, Japanese-market examples thought to still be in existence. Prices for 2000GTs were pushing a cool $1 million a few years ago, but the market has tempered greatly since.
1991 Acura NSX | Sold, $75,600
For a time, the first-generation Acura NSX was just a “used car.” After Honda phased it out of production in the early 2000s, values languished for early examples, often selling between $20,000 and $30,000. Not today. Due to NSXs being marketed as daily-drivable supercars, many have big numbers on their odometers. This example shows just 6,000 miles of use. Don’t wait for the original NSX to get any cheaper, as those who coveted these cars in their youth are now in their 30s and 40s with increasing spending power.
1976 Porsche 935 Group 5 Turbo | Sold, $173,600
We spotted L.A.’s own Porsche customizer and style guru Magnus Walker taking a hard look around, in, and under this one before the sale, but according to his own Instagram post after the auction, he went home without it. The high bidder got a crazy-looking Ice Green Metallic ’76 930 Turbo with in-period modifications from German tuner Kremer. It’s tough to tell whether this was a good buy, but it illustrates that beauty is, as always, in the eye of the beholder.
