Royal Enfield Continental GT650 review / ride report.

When was the last time you read a bad bike review in a magazine or online? Was it the debacle that was the Bimota V Due? Even Braap’s are given a positive spin by reviewers even though they had 5 product recalls in less than a year. So many motorcycle reviews these day are either a reworded press release or a well written advertisement. Now I reckon there are two reasons for that; the sceptic in me says if the magazines don’t write a positive review, then the advertising dollars stop flowing. There are plenty of examples of that car companies having a dummy spit when they don’t win car of the year so it no doubt happens in the motorcycle world too. The other reason is that it’s 2019, motorcycles have been manufactured for a long time, manufacturers have got the basics down pat. This is were Royal Enfield excels, the basics.

I wasn’t planning on writing a review but my bike was getting serviced and it wasn’t going to be ready in time for the Perth Café Racer Run to the Hills ride, so I needed a suitable replacement. As my review of the Benelli Leoncino got an amazing 36 likes (amazing because that’s 34 more than I thought it would get once Ric and I liked it) and a couple of sales, I thought Ric might be open to the idea of handing me the keys to something else. Scanning the showroom floor at MotoMax, a Ducati Sport Classic, Triumph Thruxton, Rickman Honda and a cluster of classics caught my eye. Ric handed me the keys to a mildly customised Continental GT650. Ah well, beggars can’t be choosers.

We both had conditions, Ric’s was simple “Bring it back with a full tank you tight arse bastard and if you drop it, you bu….”. I’m not sure what he said as Peter was saying “look, look” while pointing at a lady across the road who was jogging past. It was far more interesting watching the world go up and down. My condition was the same as always, I wasn’t going to write a positive review just because I got a bike for the weekend. If the bike is shit, then I’ll say so but you don’t have to post the review.  So here it is….hang on…before we get to the review, lets get some background.  

Royal Enfield sold 32,000 motorcycles in 2017 and not many of those were sold outside of India. They now sometimes sell double that in one month with their top selling model the Classic 350 outselling all their other models combined. It sometimes cracks the monthly top 10 list of number of bikes sold in India. Royal Enfield sells more Classic 350’s in one month than all the road bikes sold in Australia from all brands in one year. Unfathomable figures when you consider the company was at the brink of bankruptcy in 1991.

When Sid Lal’s dad bought the company, nothing really changed until 2010 when the Indian Tech economy boomed and hipsters finally had some disposable cash. Sales picked up and then skyrocketed the company to the fastest growing motorcycle manufacturer in the world. The success of the brand in recent times is partly because they upgraded (think EFI, ABS etc) their Bullet/Classic line to make it relevant while keeping the looks of the old motorcycle. Boomers started realising their bucket lists were getting longer and they were running out of time to cross stuff off. Learners around the world are often restricted to motorcycles that take more time to get to 100km/h than it does for a politician to answer question in parliament and Royal Enfields are perfect for that market.

The increase in sales meant Sid (the CEO at the time) had cash burning a hole in his pocket so off he went to the UK and bought Harris Performance which I remember reading about in the UK magazines for making custom frames for GP bikes. They’ve developed the chassis for all the new models including the Continental GT Café Racer, the Himalayan adventure bike and the recent 650 twins. The Café Racer handled as good as it looked but it didn’t get many hearts racing and only sold in low numbers, hence it was discontinued after a couple of years. The Himalayan has been known to get a few hearts racing which has more to do with them being ridden where they are named after. A devoted fan base will see the Himalayan continue to be developed for many years. The real game changer for Royal Enfield though, are the two 650 twins, the Interceptor and the Continental GT 650. Royal Enfield are exporting more than they are selling domestically and dealers in Oz are selling far more twins than they are of the 350cc and 500cc singles.

I’m not a brand snob so will any bike I can get the keys to. My list of motorcycle brands I’d like to put my bum on is topped, like most peoples, by the Italian exotics such as Bimota, MV Agusta etc. For me, Royal Enfield sits a long way down that list; I’m no fan boy who gets excited when a manufacturer changes the colour and releases it as a 2020 model. I lived in the world of sportsbikes and track days so Royal Enfields never registered on my radar; I always felt they were a little weird looking. Sort of like a girlfriend I had  in the 90’s that looked like a cockeyed Nicole Kidman without the Botox. Like my girlfriend, if you ride a Royal Enfield a few times you start appreciate the attraction and you end up falling in love. Since my first Himalayan motorcycle adventure in 2013, I have ridden all of the Royal Enfield models in Australia and in the harshest of conditions that the Himalayas can throw at you and while I still wouldn’t consider myself a fan boy, I would say I was an advocaat. Damn, it’s 11pm and I’m out of beer and wishing I had a liqueur cabinet. Is there an Uber drinks?   

The Conti I got had a few subtle changes made to it. The tank hand been replaced with the rounder tank from an interceptor, bar end mirrors had been fitted and the bike had been encouraged to find its voice with some aftermarket reverse cones mufflers fitted. The bar end mirrors worked perfectly, completely vibration free all through the rev range however the bike was a little quiet for my liking. You could certainly hear it under throttle and it let out pleasing pops and crackles on a decline but I’d like a deeper, louder sound. More Tom Jones than George Michael. If you’ve got standard pipes on your bike and you’re bored with it and possibly considering a change of bike, put an aftermarket set of pipes on and you’ll fall in love again. The Interceptor tank looked great on the Conti and helped take my eyes off what I consider to be the ugliest seat in the market. For some reason, Royal Enfield in Australia decided that the dual seat would be standard and the solo seat with a cowling that is used for the promo pics, and is standard in most of the 50 other countries that it is sold in would be option for Australia. I know looks are subjective but the transformation that the single seat makes on this bike is amazing and I wonder why more people aren’t swapping them over when it is such a cheap option. Maybe it’s just me. 

I am trying to squeeze myself into my daughters Katy Perry T-Shirt when Andy arrives early on his Ducati Sport Classic. With no time for Small Talk, it was time to Roar into Leederville to meet the others. We took the back roads before getting onto the freeway and this is the Conti’s playground. With narrow 100/18’s on the front and 130/18’s on the back, the bike flicks left and right really quickly. On familiar roads, I found myself turning in too quickly and having to readjust my line which the bike did without drama. Later on in the day when the speeds picked up a little and the mercury wanted to blow its load, the front end felt squirmish when going over the bitumen that is poured into the cracks of the road. No one else felt it so again, maybe it was just me.

Our group heading to the start point of the ride consisted of a Sport Classic with Zard pipes, a Thruxton with Staintunes, a V7 Guzzi with Lanfranconis, a Honda CB1100 with an aftermarket 4 into 1 and a W650 with open pipes. It was amazing listening to all the different sounds as we lined up at the Christmas trees, sometimes known as traffic lights by boring people. The Sport Classic consistently got the jump on the rest of at the lights but the rest of us all had a turn at coming second without any clear next fastest. The Conti is styled as a Café Racer of old but it is no race bike with ligths like they were in the old days. Sid Lal himself says “…we (Royal Enfield motorcycles) aren’t going much faster than 100 miles an hour. If someone wants a quicker motorbike, go elsewhere.” During the week, the media reported that a car was hooning through the tunnel at the outrageous speed of 140km/h. The bar had been set low so there was simply no need to crack the ton in the tunnel. Absolutely no need. By my calcs, I reckon 170+ is possible but as I never break the speed limits I’ll never find out.

Riding along the Tonkin, I rolled the throttle on and off, looking for flat spots but couldn’t find any, it just smoothly accelerates all the way to the redline in a very linear fashion. The 5 speed box has perfectly spaced gear ratios and I rarely looked for a 6th like I constantly do on my W650. We joined the rest of the riders and took off along the escarpment as the pace crept up through the hills. The bike was in its element, enjoying being thrown around and asking for more. I worked my way to the front of the pack and when there was a break in the traffic I gave it what it wanted and took off. On these sort of roads, I neither needed or wanted anymore power, I just enjoyed rolling the throttle on and rolling it off coming into a corner, letting the engine compression slow me down with only a slight dab on the rear brake when needed. The Pirelli Phantoms had more than enough grip and never troubled the ABS system. I considered putting the Phantoms on my bike but baulked at the price so Royal Enfield aren’t skimping on quality to ensure they stay at the $9990 price point.

After a cool down and a group photo, we headed to lunch at Parkerville and to pay our respects to Kevin the kookaburra who had his head ripped off recently by a complete and utter wanker. As we hit the road again, I found my right hand feeling a bit tingly which is a little unusual. My bike has thicker grips so maybe the thinner grips on the Conti passed on the vibes or maybe I’m just old and the years of abuse I’ve given my right hand is coming back to bite me. The suspension soaked up the bumpy roads but my bum was starting to feel a bit numb. The seat looks flat but is actually slightly rounded which was giving me numb bum…which would have come in handy when it also got years of abuse in a previous life. These are the only two faults with the Conti GT that I could find, both of which wouldn’t stop me buying one as I’d change the hideous seat and put thicker grips on anyway. Everything else was perfect; the horn is louder than my cars, the clocks are easy to read, clutch and brake lever action is effortless, the gearbox is ridiculously smooth, riding position is spot on.

At under 10k, the only bike that is comparable to the Conti is its stablemate the Interceptor. The visually challenged Harley 750 is being run out a similar price, Suzuki threw a bikini fairing on its SV650 and called it café racer and is watching them gather dust on the showroom. The Benelli Leoncino and the oddly styled Husqvarna Svartpilen are similar prices but I doubt the circles in the Venn diagram of people interested in these three bikes would overlap.

For $13,000, the W800 from Kawasaki is another option but I’d rather have the Conti and spend the difference on customising it. The only other option is to buy a Triumph Street Twin at $16,000 and then throw some money at it to make it a café racer. Buying a bike that 100’s of other people have got and keeping it standard, doesn’t make any sense to me. If I had Triumph money to spend and the option was to have stock a Street Twin or a one of a kind Continental GT with a big bore kit, killer paint job, custom seat and a custom exhaust then it’s a no brainer. I’m in the minority though as most riders are happy with buying a good looking bike and leaving it alone. The Continental GT can be enjoyed as is but also makes a very smart choice as base for a custom motorcycle.

Elon Musk had a dream: a car factory that looked more “alien” than human, with hundreds of robots working cooperatively on the assembly line like a hyper-efficient hive. A handful of humans would oversee the work, but for the most part, the manufacturing of Tesla’s Model 3 electric vehicle would be fully automated.

Robots can do everything people can do, Musk reasoned, but many, many times faster — so why not take the people, who are a drag on production speed, out of the equation? His stated goal: to achieve a 20-fold increase in production speed for Tesla’s Model 3 electric vehicle and be cranking out 20,000 cars per month by the end of 2017.

But a funny thing happened on the way to future: the robots weren’t quite up to the task. While Musk had promised production of 20,000 Model 3s per month by December, a mere 2,425 rolled off the line for all of the last three months of 2017, leading up to a record loss in Q1 2018 of $785 million. Ultimately, Musk had to reverse course, pulling his new robots off the lines and hiring hundreds of employees a week to rescue the Model 3 targets.

As Tesla continues to burn through its cash, the missed production targets have resulted in order cancelations, a falling share price and downgrades on both stock and debt. In July, Tesla claimed it had hit the 5,000-per-week production target, but a nervous Street seems not at all confident that the rate is sustainable.

Musk offered his mea culpa in a tweet: “Excessive automation at Tesla was a mistake. To be precise, my mistake. Humans are underrated.”

That’s hardly a surprise for most manufacturing CEOs. For all their promise, two decades of overblown hype and expensive false starts have clearly demonstrated that robots will not replace humans any time soon. In fact, a study of plant performance by the consulting firm Oliver Wyman actually found that the most automated factories ranked not at the top for productivity — but at the bottom.

“People are the most flexible form of automation you can have,” says Ron Harbour, a Wyman partner who has studied industrial automation for decades.

Tom Shoupe, COO of Honda of America Manufacturing, agrees. “It is our fundamental belief that humans are the most important element of our operation,” says Shoupe. While Honda uses advanced manufacturing technology, including sophisticated robotics, “we’ve taken the approach that we automate only where it’s appropriate, where there’s an efficiency issue, and then we allocate our people to something that requires more human touch. The touch, the feel, the senses of human beings can’t be replaced by machines.”

A Robot’s Role

It isn’t all hype, of course. Rapid advances in technology offer increasingly tantalizing opportunities. Robots and automation already play a prominent role in all parts of Industry 4.0, coming together with learning algorithms that allow both bots and humans to optimize production and improve quality. Increasingly sophisticated systems will be critical to addressing important elements of the skills gap, which, according to the most recent study by Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute, will result in 2 million unfilled jobs by 2025. Many U.S. manufacturers likely would agree with that, having by now accepted that robots will play a prominent role in Industry 4.0. In this latest industrial revolution, and the era of the “smart factory” well under way, computers and automation are coming together in a new way: robotics are connected to computer systems that are equipped with artificial intelligence and learning algorithms that can allow both robots and humans to make fast decisions to optimize production and improve quality, all to the exacting specifications of a knowledgeable and demanding end user.

At the same time, CEOs who have been down this road will tell you that too much automation too soon can be the death knell of an otherwise successful manufacturer. As with the three industrial revolutions that came before this new digital age, change can’t happen overnight. “The context I like to keep in mind is when companies went from steam to electric, they tended to electrify the production line exactly as it had been set up in its steam configuration,” says Siemens U.S. CEO Barbara Humpton. “Then the groundbreakers said, ‘Wait, I can put equipment in any configuration I want because I don’t have to power it down a steam production line.’ But the thing we’re talking about a lot here at Siemens is, with each one of these changes, we’ve elevated the role of the human in the process.”

Right at this moment, she adds, we are seeing competing influences at work: “The fear that something is changing and the awareness that as we do this, we unleash people to be doing things that add value in new and different ways.”

In the first phase, robots take over repetitive, high-volume production tasks that were often dangerous or boring — and unlikely to attract young workers. Until recently, Travis Hollman, CEO of Hollman, the world’s largest manufacturer of wood and laminate lockers, was ambivalent about using robots on his production line. He’s a big believer in humans and thinks Elon Musk missed a crucial fact: “You can’t get to a perfect product if people don’t genuinely care about it and aren’t involved in making it.”

In July, he took the plunge and purchased his first robot, a machine that will do the heavy lifting and sorting of materials that was previously done by people who would often injure their backs. Those people will now oversee the machines. “It’s not going to replace people, but it will save people from getting hurt. It will help with worker’s comp,” he says.

It will also boost productivity, potentially threefold, as the machines can be stacked three deep in the company’s 300,000-squarefoot factory in Irving, Texas, and operate “lights out” overnight, so the materials are ready for humans by morning. “We have the capability to make it very efficient in the future as we buy more machines, but right now it’s a money-out thing, saving injury and relieving stress on the company.”

Automation’s Limitations

But Hollman is reticent to try automation anywhere in the process that involves customization, which is key for the company’s customers, who include fitness chains, major U.S. sports leagues and university sports teams.

The company is constantly looking for innovative solutions for customers, and Hollman can’t see how robots wouldn’t interfere with that process.

“Maybe in the future,��� he says. “But right now the technology isn’t there. It might work for Elon Musk to make the same car over and over. But we’re trying to make a customized product to suit each individual need. Every time we try a new material, it might be different tooling, different machining of different parts — I don’t see how you turn that over to robotics.”

Robotics — at least the kind that isn’t cost prohibitive — has been viewed as suitable primarily for manufacturers doing high volume, high scale, less customization. However, the technology is evolving. “A lot of those perceptions are grounded in a reality,” says Humpton. “But we’ve had people working on the question of ultimate customization for the last five to six years, and the technologies now exist.”

That’s thanks, in part, to the R&D done by companies like Siemens, which invests more than $1 billion a year in the U.S. alone. “We’re going to see the technologies become cost competitive in the coming years,” she says. “If you were the first to own an iPhone, you might have paid $600 for it. You don’t necessarily have to do that today.”

But there’s more to trepidation than cost. “Most companies just don’t even know where to start,” says Alexandre Capone, senior manager architect at digital transformation consultancy Capgemini. “We’re talking about a lot of new technology, robotics and AI machining, and if you’ve never touched it, you’re scared of it.” Even those that have begun are not yet thrilled with their results. Capgemini’s 2017 study of 1,000 large manufacturers across eight countries and six manufacturing subsectors found 75 percent had a smart factory initiative in place or were working on it, but only 14 percent were satisfied by their level of smart factory success.

Of course, you risk falling for the technology. “Engineers love to try and automate everything, but it may not make business sense — there may not be a return on investment, it may not improve the quality of the product, it may take too long to do the automation, depending on how quickly the customer wants to get their product,” says Bob Eulau, CEO of Sanmina, a $7 billion B2B manufacturer of optical, electronic and mechanical products that began automating its production lines 15 years ago and now has 25,000 machines connected around the world via the cloud. “We talk about the concept of ‘selective automation.’ We are very careful to make sure we use automation in the right places and capture value when we choose to do it.”

By starting small, a company can get experience with the technology, gather data and soon realize the kinds of efficiencies that enable growth — and more investment. vertically integrate, we’ve become less dependent on outside sources,” says Jim Radous, president. “We control more of the design capabilities and the parts that go into the product and that keeps us more competitive, more internally focused on efficiencies and allows us to stay within a very tight fixed-cost parameter as we add people to our process.”

Keeping that focus on the end customer is paramount to guiding any manufacturing company through digitalization and automation. That, and remembering the value of the most complex and capable machine in their plant: People.

Even the International Federation of Robotics said in its April 2017 report that “less than 10 percent of jobs are fully automatable.” Robots will never be able to handle tasks “requiring high levels of creativity, empathy, persuasion or understanding of which knowledge to apply in which situation.” As such, machines should complement and augment human labor activities, playing a supporting role so that humans can “focus on higher-skilled, higher-quality and higher-paid tasks.”

To get there, CEOs must seek a balance between human and machine so as not to sacrifice the je ne sais quoi that has made American manufacturing competitive since the first industrial revolution. “The human being’s ability to interpret and to initiate and to apply ideas is critical to making things happen,” says Honda’s Shoupe. “We feel like one without the other is a complete loss for us.”

2021 Chevrolet Traverse First Look at The Big Three-Row’s New Look

The Chevrolet Traverse flies further under the radar than most mid-size three-row crossovers, but that doesn’t mean it has little to offer families. Along with a quiet ride, it boasts sharp handling and more cargo space than its competitors—mostly because it’s huge. (And buyers looking to haul people and cargo will never turn down more space.) Chevrolet’s current Traverse has been around since 2017, and after giving the SUV a few tech upgrades last year, it is fully refreshing the rig for 2021.

Changes to the Traverse’s exterior aren’t drastic but are noticeable. Chevrolet sharpened the look a little bit with narrower headlights, which are standard LEDs, and added blockier styling elements that square up the previously somewhat rounded nose. Turn signal indicators are now integrated into the daytime running lamps flanking the lower intakes, while the two grille sections separated by the bowtie now come together in a more cohesive unit, and the lower vents and fog lights have also been redesigned. In the rear, you’ll find new LED taillights. Four new wheel designs complete the look.

The 2021 Chevrolet Traverse’s interior receives several new available features, among them an 8.0-inch driver information center, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, and a rear power sunshade for the available two-panel power sunroof. Chevrolet is also changing up the available upholstery colors and trims.

Safety features that previously were optional will now be standard on the 2021 Traverse. These include automated emergency braking with front pedestrian detection, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, forward collision alert, automatic high-beam controls, and a following distance indicator. Additionally, adaptive cruise control is now available on the 3LT, RS, and Premier trims. Safety Alert Seat, a feature that vibrates the driver seat to warn of potential hazards, is standard on Premier and High Country models.

Prices have not yet been announced, but expect the 2021 Chevrolet Traverse to cost slightly more than the 2020 model, which starts at $30,995. Otherwise, the Traverse’s sleek new look will help keep it fresh among its similarly updated competition, namely the all-new Toyota Highlander, revised Honda Pilot, and freshly rear-drive Ford Explorer.

Kia Scores a Hat Trick with the Forte, Soul and Niro

I’m often asked what my criteria are for a successful critique. Though there are many variables at play, I’ve narrowed it down to the three that are the most important to me and would play a crucial part not necessarily in your in your immediate buying decision, but your longtime ownership. Let’s face it you can’t evaluate a vehicle 100% driving it around the block. Even with my extended drives, I often only get the true feel of the vehicle in the last hours of possession.

First, comfort. Whether I’m visiting clients, chasing down new leads, scouting shooting    locations, traveling to car shows or stopping by at cruise nights to chat with the local enthusiasts or hand out copies of our pocket guides, I spend hours upon hours each day behind the wheel racking up hundreds and at times thousands of kilometers a week on the road. After a long day behind the wheel comfort is paramount not only to my physical well-being but also my mental state. And you would be surprised how often a vehicle flunks.

My second criteria has a bigger stake in my mental state, and that is, fun. If driving isn’t fun to me than I might as well take a bus or taxi, and nothing can make the day go by faster than if you’re enjoying yourself behind the wheel. The fun factor encompasses many things but mostly the vehicles performance, handling, and driving ease. This doesn’t necessarily mean a thousand horsepower with big fat tires and heart pounding, ear-popping noise. I fell in love with the first generation Mazda Miata within 50 feet of driving it. A car often criticized for not having enough power. To make matters even more interesting I had the rare opportunity to drive the miniscule Honda Beat, a pint-sized runabout powered by a 3-cylinder engine that had a top speed of around 80 kph. But you felt like you were doing a hundred miles an hour in it.

Lastly I want the controls to be user friendly. I don’t have time to read thirty pages of instructions in an owner’s manual the size of a medium city’s phone book on how to set up my cell phone or entertainment system. I’m here to go from point a to point b safely and don’t need to be reading texts or having to press buttons three times on the ahhem, infotainment system to switch radio stations.

Yes the Kias scored highly on these three main points, but even more importantly did so with finesse and then some. Read on.  

Forte5 SX T- GDI

Step aside Honda Civic, there’s a new kid in town and he’s about to have you for breakfast. While Honda’s been relaxing on its laurels, Kia has been slowly refining its compact hatchback, and for 2017 it’s loaded with even more goodies wrapped up in a contemporary design nicely accented with red pin striped grill reminiscent of VW’s GTi. It works on the Golf and it works here too, once you get past the slew of acronyms in the name (who is going to remember that mouthful of letters in two hours much less five years?)

Rather than go with the boy racer look, the Forte offers styling that any adult would not be ashamed to be seen behind the wheel of. And behind the wheel is where you want to be! Our SX came with the 1.6 L turbocharged four cylinder that dishes out 201 horses and an impressive 195 lb.ft. of torque at 1,500rpm to the front axle via a seven speed automatic (new for 2017) that owners can shift with steering wheel mounted paddles. Sadly there is no standard tyranny available in the SX.  There’s also a 164 horse (152 lb.ft.) 2.0L four in the four other trim lines. The automatic goes through its gears smoothly. Even at full throttle, the gear changes are seamless, attesting to Kia’s engineering. Getting this hot hatch to 100 kph takes a shade under 7.5 seconds.

Taking driving excitement a step further is Kia’s 3-step Drive Mode Select that alters the steering wheel feel, changes throttle response and shift points. Eco, as the name implies turns the SX into a miserly runabout with little or no feel on the steering. Normal brings it back to how the factory intended the car to respond, but set the switch on Sport and a whole new different beast awakens. I found myself leaving the car in Eco for my commutes up and down the highways but quickly opted for Sport when I spotted winding roads ahead. The Forte5 is a very capable handler that really likes to be tossed into a corner. Indeed if it was equipped with a manual tranny, I would compare it more to a German hatchback than anything the Japanese are throwing out there these days.

Like its exterior, the driving compartment is nicely thought out and designed to work. A concoction of textures and colors from satin to glossy to fake carbon fibre. Sounds like it would be gaudy but it works and looks fresh…go figure. The comfortable supportive leather front buckets aren’t only heated but cooled as well. As mentioned in my opening I love it when controls are well placed and easy to use and the Kia wins time and time again. The infotainment system is easy to set up and works off both Apple CarPlay and Android.

Rear seat passengers get pampered with heat and chill controls and will be happy to learn that there’s ample room for six footers back there. Fold the rear seat backs down and there’s enough cargo room to carry enough gear for two people to go on a cross-country road trip.

Yes you read that right heating and cooling for rear seat occupants.

One of the many virtues of Kia has always been getting the most bang for your buck and the Forte5 is no exception. Blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning with lane keep assist and rear cross traffic alert are all-standard. In fact the options list on the SX is almost non-existent save for exterior colour choices, and a few minor trinkets.

Soul SX Turbo Tech

Kia may have targeted the Soul towards active, young buyers, but around here the Soul has been a big hit with senior citizens.  And who can blame them, the boxy design lets itself to easy step in, step out and the higher riding seating position gives a better view ahead than your typical sedan without the added costs of getting into an suv or minivan. The back hatch opens up to allow ample room for grocery bags, again, without the need to put your back out each and every time.

All’s fine but how do you get millenials to take notice and increase your market share? Turbocharge it! The Soul was never a performance vehicle and some might say, anemic, even when it came to your daily outings around town. Well all that has changed. Kia has pirated the 1.6-litre turbocharged four from the Forte (above) and transplanted it into the Soul.

The result is a wallop of fun with 201 horses and 195 lb.ft of torque propelling a pint sized grocery getter down the road. No the turbo doesn’t turn the Soul into a GTi beater. Its suspension layout and tall design couldn’t possibly lend itself to chasing down hot hatches on country roads, but makes passing semis on the highway a breeze, getting up to speed on highway on ramps a lot less risky and zipping through city traffic a joy. Aiding in bringing the car to a halt the Turbo gets larger front rotors. And it does have a nice rasp emanating from the twin exhaust pipes.

Like the Forte5 turbo, the Soul has a red chin stripe to differentiate it from the other trim lines, and like the Forte5, the Soul gives its driver a choice of driving modes, but unlike the Forte there are no paddle shifters, instead if you want to upshift or downshift on your own whim rather than relying on the smooth 7-seven speed automatic, you’ll have to do so with the console shifter. Still, it takes little away from the excitement offered by the new powerplant. I found myself starting off in Sport mode from red lights and for running around in bumper to bumper traffic and then set it in Normal for my highway cruise home. 

The Soul offers the same driving amenities as the Forte, in short, well placed and easy to use controls. Our tester came with the optional 8-inch screen for the infotainment system which also offers nav, unlike the seven-inch system in the Forte5, which requires you to wire up your cell for nav.

Prices start at $19,150 for the base model LX equipped with the 130 horsepower 1.6L engine and climb quickly through the eight trim levels to $31,850 for the SX Turbo Tech unit. Mid rang is the EX trim line powered by a 2.0L 161 horse mill with 149 lb.ft. of torque. There is a less pricey SX Turbo that offers all the peppiness of the turbo with fewer bells and whistles, like the premium Harmon/Kardon audio system and the aforementioned 8-inch screen for $27,850. The Turbo Tech buyer also gets the benefits of a large panoramic sunroof and Xenon HID headlights.

Oh, and when you spring for the Tech option you’ll also get speaker lights that will give you a light show.

By now you get the idea that the Soul’s cabin is a nice place to be. Like all Kia’s, the Soul comes with a lot more items to pamper you and your occupants than many similarly priced competitors.  Heated front and rear outer seats are an example.  A heated steering wheel is a very welcomed feature after scraping the snow and ice off the car.

Thirty grand and the passenger gets power a seat!

Cargo space is above average for similarly sized crossovers and lift over is easy with the rear hatch opening high. The only disappointment in an otherwise well thought out interior was that the rear seat does not fold flat.

It’s easy to see why the Soul has survived while other similarly designed boxes like the Honda Element and Nissan Cube have disappeared from the landscape. The Soul Turbo has all the elements to attract younger buyers but I get the feeling we’ll also see some seniors in their hot rod Souls.

Niro Touring

Look closely and you won’t notice any red stripe on the Niro’s grille. There’s good reason for that, and it’s not just that there’s no turbo.  We’ve seen Kia declare war on Honda with the Forte, on Nissan with the Soul and just when you thought that Kia’s war on Japanese car makers was over, the South Koreans now clearly have their eyesight’s set on Toyota with the Niro, a dedicated hybrid wagon that doesn’t scream Look at Me I’m Driving a Hybrid, unlike Toyota’s Prius. Welcome news to those who want a handsome hybrid without the radical and dare I say, quirky, looks. 

This brings Kia’s hybrid line to two models counting the Optima sedan. But the Niro has its battle cut out, not only does it enter the most competitive market niche in Canada, the subcompact slot it’s also up against industry leaders Toyota and to a lesser extent Honda, who’ve been punching out and refining hybrids for decades.  Add Toyota’s ever expanding line of Priuses from the standard model to the plug-in variant as well as the compact Prius C and larger Prius V, and the Niro has the deck stacked against it… or does it?

Four trim lines are available starting with the entry level L priced at $26,850. But don’t think entry level means an empty chariot. On the contrary, in keeping with Kia’s modus operandi, the L features such upscale amenities including heated front seats and steering wheel, rearview camera and for those who can’t stay away from their techno gizmos, Android and Apple CarPlay connectivity. The EX ($29,350) ads smart key and push-button start, wireless phone charger and auto-dimming rear view mirror. If you want a power sunroof, 8-way power driver’s seat, blind spot detection (come on folks just adjust your mirrors properly) and rear cross traffic alert, then you may want the EX Premium at $30,950. Lastly the top-of-the-line SX Touring  ($34,850) ads you get leather seats, 8-inch multi-media screen with a premium Harmon/Kardon sound system and autonomous e-braking system.

There’s only one engine across the trim line, a 1.6 litre four-cylinder gasoline engine that produces 109 horses and is augmented by an electric motor that pumps up the ponies to a decent 139 horses. The all important torque figure is a respectable 195 lb.ft. What does this mean to the Niro buyer? The Niro feels slower than Ford’s C-Max but quicker than the Prius, probably in part to the six-speed dual-clutch automatic tranny versus Toyota’s CVT unit. Yes, red light acceleration will be a bit slow if you’re used to high horsepower cars, but once you reached the crosswalk at the other side of the street the torque kicks in and you’re off and continues through to highway passing speeds.  My non-track testing showed the Niro accelerate to 100 km/h from a standing start in 9 seconds, about a second faster than the Prius I had last year.   

Getting off the stoplights around town I found myself switching to Sport mode and than went back to the Eco setting once under way. The tranny I is seem less and like its ride, smooth

But hybrids are all about conserving our dependence on gasoline while we find alternative sources or until electric cars become able to travel long distances without emptying our wallets in the showroom. The Niro beat out the C-Max in fuel economy and the 5-door hatch Prius V in pricing, but the Prius’ fuel consumption remains paramount. Check with your local governments for incentives and rebates.

The Niro wins in interior appointments as evidenced by the base model and gives better than average value for your buying dollar. The cabin is spacious, and well designed both esthetically and intuitively. 

Yes, there’s room for a couple of six footers in the back seat. 

Kia may be marketing this hybrid as a crossover – the latest buzzword in marketing jargon. Apparently marketing departments STILL don’t see station wagons as being cool, even though the recent resurgence of classic wagons by thirty something’s points to the contrary. I like to think of it as a tall station wagon or a five-door hatchback. No matter what label you put on it the Niro is a winner.
