As for installation, the Aivo Connect mounts to either the windshield of your vehicle or your dashboard. I chose the dash as I don't like objects obstructing my view while I am driving. The beauty of having two stick-on bases is that you can try different attachment points to suit your preference. On the other hand, the second plastic base can also be used for another vehicle, as the Aivo Connect locks and unlocks from the base with only a slight twist.
To attach the base plate, clean the mounting surface with something like rubbing alcohol (always test for colorfastness) and wait for the surface to dry. Then peel the red adhesive backing from the mounting plate. Align the arrow on the mounting plate in the driver's direction, and then press and stick.
From there, you'll slide the Aivo Connect onto the base and press down until the unit is flush with your surface. Then twist the mount one-quarter turn clockwise to lock it in place. Finally, plug the 12-volt power cable into the 12-volt auxiliary power port in your vehicle.

Testing the Aivo Connect

To test the Alexa functionality of the Aivo Connect, I took the unit for a drive. Before getting out of my garage, I asked Alexa to cue up some 90's Hip-Hop, and I tried to get directions to the nearest Home Depot. As long as my internet connection wasn't spotty, then Alexa Auto functioned beautifully. But, about three hundred feet from my home, when the signal from my wireless router switched over to 5G, Alexa buzzed and told me that she was having trouble connecting. This wasn't unexpected.
As for the device's mechanical cradle, I did have occasional issues with the Aivo not recognizing that I was waving my phone at it. I found that if the phone wasn't square to the sensor at the base of the charging pad, the unit wouldn't reliably recognize something in front of it. However, if I made sure the phone was square to the sensor, then the Aivo Connect opened every time. Additionally, the unit detected my phone at a maximum distance of 4 inches away from the charging pad.

Wireless charging also functioned well. I usually keep my phone in a Moment photo case, and with this case on, I had no trouble getting the Aivo to charge. That said, I don't usually use any kind of Pop-Socket, or grip on the back of my phone. If you do, you're probably already aware that wireless charging may not work with these accessories.
Phone grips like the Pop-Socket also present another problem with the Aivo Connect. This unit's jaws are relatively shallow and seem designed to work only with a phone and case combination. Putting a grip on your phone and then trying to insert it into the Aivo doesn't give the mount enough bite to hold your phone securely.
That means if you are one of those people who cannot be without your phone grip, then you'll want to skip this offering and try and find something that will accommodate the extra accessories.
On the rear of the unit are two buttons that allow you to release your phone from the clamp. The idea is that when you need to leave your vehicle, you hit one of these buttons and wait for the clamp to open and drop your phone into your hand. You've got to be ready to catch your phone, though, because this clamp does not mess around. Instead, pressing the button lets your expensive cellphone drop faster than an amusement park water slide.

One common issue that I've had in the past with other phone mounts has been that they would not stick to my dashboard. My 2018 Honda CR-V has a pebbled leather dash, which means many mounting solutions don't adhere well. This issue was a concern for me when installing the Aivo Connect.
Fortunately, this wasn't the case. After a quick wipe down, I stuck the mounting base to my dash and held it for the required 30 seconds. I've been testing this unit for the last week, and I haven't had any trouble with the adhesion, even after removing and reinstalling the Aivo Connect multiple times.
For my final test, I wanted to see how Alexa handled loud music. One of the things that I love about Siri is its ability to respond, even when I'm blasting music at dad volume. Unfortunately, responses were where I had the most trouble with the Aivo Connect.

The unit has three microphones built into the base, and unless you've pressed the mute button, the microphones are always listening for the wake word. However, even with all three microphones active, when the music in my car was slightly higher than normal listening volume, Alexa had trouble hearing me. It's hard to determine whether this is an Alexa issue or an issue with the iOttie Aivo Connect.
On the back left of the device, there is a button that allows you to summon Alexa. This button is great and circumvents Alexa's selective hearing. I found that it came in handy when Alexa was acting like my teenage daughter and ignoring me.
But, if you're trying to use a hands-free smart assistant and you have to take your hands off of the steering wheel to scramble for a button, then the device isn't helping you be hands-free. So, if you're someone who likes to listen to loud music while you drive, then this device may not be suitable for you.
What Do We Love About the Aivo Connect?
Setup, installation, connectivity, and the motorized cradle are all well-executed in this unit. The wireless charging is one of my favorite features because it means I don't have to go digging around in my center console for a lightning cable.

Also, not having to wrestle with a clamp when I want to attach my phone to my car is a feature that I appreciate. Adding a motorized clamp is genius, and it solves one of the most annoying aspects of mounting your phone in your vehicle.
Alexa support is also excellent. However, it won't replace Apple CarPlay for me. I've relied on CarPlay since I purchased my vehicle in 2018, and even though it has its quirks, it works well 90% of the time. I can also use my dash display to interact with it. If I did not have access to CarPlay, I would certainly benefit from Alexa. Being a cautious driver is essential these days, precisely because so many people aren't.
I also liked the two included bases and the ability to swap this device between cars. This ability is something that I think people might overlook. If you've got more than one vehicle and neither has a smart assistant, then you need something like the Aivo Connect.
Finally, iOttie has put some serious attention to detail into this unit. On the right-side jaw of the Aivo Connect, for example, molded into the rubber is a slight indentation. At first glance, this might not seem like a big deal, but when you install your phone into the clamp, that indentation keeps the clamp from accidentally pressing the side button of your phone. It's a minor detail, but it addresses another common annoyance of clamp-style phone mounts.
What's Not to Love?

Alexa's selective hearing is something that might rub some people the wrong way. Again, this may not be the fault of the iOttie Aivo Connect, but it is something to be aware of. While not the end of the world, having reliable smart assistant support is arguably more important than having no support at all.
Additionally, you must be careful not to accidentally press one of the rear buttons that release your phone. If you're not attentive, then your expensive device could wind up falling out of the clamp and smacking whatever is underneath it on the way down. If you're aware of it, then you'll be much less likely to succumb to a disastrous spill.
There's also a limitation for texting support. If you'd like to text people, they must also be users of Alexa Communication. That means they must have either the Alexa app installed on their phone or have some type of Echo device to receive messages. For some, this might not be an issue, but if your primary means of communication is via text message, you might get frustrated with Aivo Connect.
Finally, as I've mentioned earlier, if you're already using a smart assistant in your car, then the Aivo Connect is not going to replace your current "boo thang." But these tiny gripes aren't stakes through the heart of the Aivo Connect by any means. They're more like minor rough edges.

Can You Repair the Aivo Connect?
On the rear of the Aivo Connect are four Philips screws that you can remove from the unit. To save you some hassle, I removed those screws and gently pried apart the wireless charging pad. Before I could get everything apart, however, I was greeted with wires, capacitors, and electronic components tightly sandwiched inside the unit.

I'm not afraid to take most things apart, but once I saw the delicate electronics inside, I snapped the charging pad back together and reinstalled the screws. I highly advise against taking this device apart. There are no user-serviceable components, and if you break something, you're likely going to be out a hundred bucks.
Should You Buy the Aivo Connect by iOttie?
iOttie has done an excellent job with the Aivo Connect. If you are looking to add a smart assistant to your vehicle, I would recommend picking it up. The motorized cradle system and the wireless charging make the device worth its $99 price tag even ignoring the Alexa support. But it really shines once you make full use of Alexa. It's also a much more capable device than Amazon's Echo Auto. Even with the limitations that we discussed.
Overall, the Aivo Connect is a cleverly-designed unit that demonstrates the many reasons why iOttie is so prevalent in the automotive accessory space. We hope to see more great products like this one in the future.

2019 Honda CR-V EX-L FWD: Why I’d Buy It – Alex Nishimoto
“What SUV should I buy?” It’s a question consumers ask themselves every day, but what would online editor Alex Nishimoto drive? Keep reading for the answer, and see other editors’ picks here.
I’ve been putting off buying a new car for more than half my life. I learned to dread the process as a kid after being trapped at a dealership for eight hours while my parents haggled for their new wheels. As a result of that experience, I’ve stuck to private-sale used cars my entire adult life. But as you can imagine, my priorities changed when my first kid was born a year ago.
Prior to my son’s arrival in May 2018, I was your average early-millennial car nerd. If you looked through my Craigslist search history, you’d see an odd mix of old-car keywords: BMW E36 M3 sedan, Jaguar XJ Series I, Triumph Spitfire, Saab 900 Turbo, Nissan 300ZX Z32, etc. To a certain group of enthusiasts, those are all undeniably cool cars, but they have something else in common—they’re all less than ideal for transporting a baby. (OK, maybe the four-door M3 could squeak by in that role.) As a married man in my mid-30s with a house, a reasonable amount of disposable income, and, crucially, access to press cars thanks to this job, I could have made one of the above options work as a second vehicle/ongoing project. But with my son now in the picture and my wife’s 2006 Acura TSX approaching 150,000 miles, any questionable car-buying decisions would have to wait until my midlife crisis.
With my plans to pick up a weekend car foiled, what would I buy now? To accommodate our new addition, it would need to have four doors and a back seat spacious enough to fit an infant car seat (and, eventually, a larger convertible car seat). A large cargo area would be great to have, as we’ll be lugging around bulky items like his stroller and Pack ’n Play. And because this vehicle will be transporting our most precious cargo, excellent safety ratings are a must. It also needs to be dead reliable, and for my own peace of mind that meant buying new. Realizing that, I knew I had to get over my dealership phobia.
With a budget of about $30,000, we started looking at new cars that met the above criteria. My wife, Courtney, would be the one driving it most, and she preferred something with similar dimensions to her TSX. At 183.3 inches long and 69.4 inches wide, the first-gen TSX is about the same length as most compact crossovers, so going with one of those she would just need to get used to the extra width and, obviously, the increased height. With that, we narrowed our search to the compact crossover class and quickly arrived at a top two: the Subaru Forester and Honda CR-V.
Both are solid choices that earn top marks in safety, with the 2019 CR-V named an IIHS Top Safety Pick and the 2019 Forester a Top Safety Pick+. Both also have roomy interiors and good-sized cargo areas. But ultimately, the decision came down to available engines. The 2019 Subaru Forester is offered with just one engine choice, a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated flat-four that makes 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque. That might not sound that far off from the 190 hp and 179 lb-ft of the CR-V’s available 1.5-liter turbocharged I-4, but the difference in how they drive is night and day. The Forester felt sluggish off the line and in traffic, requiring deliberate and ample throttle application to pass. The 1.5-liter turbo in the CR-V, on the other hand, is lively and responsive. Although the 1.5T CR-V and TSX deliver power differently, Courtney thought they felt similar enough that she wouldn’t need to make big adjustments to her driving style.
Now that we had settled on the CR-V, the question was which one to get. We had already ruled out the base LX trim because we wanted the turbo engine, as well as features like Apple CarPlay and heated seats, which you can’t get with the LX. We reasoned that leather upholstery would be more baby-friendly than cloth, as liquid spills would be easier to clean up. Leather is standard on EX-L and the top-trim Touring model. The latter comes with features we could probably live without. Onboard navigation isn’t necessary because we can run Google Maps on CarPlay, and although the hands-free power liftgate could be useful, Courtney has gotten by with just a remote-opening trunk up until now.
The EX-L trim was our Goldilocks model (a Touring is shown above), but we still had one decision left: front- or all-wheel drive? We don’t really need the extra traction living in Southern California, and given Courtney’s 40-mile roundtrip commute, the 1-mpg advantage of the front-drive model would add up over time. All-wheel drive might come in handy if we ever took a trip to the mountains to see snow, or maybe on a camping trip involving some light dirt trails. But even with all-wheel drive, I wouldn’t be comfortable taking the CR-V too far off the beaten path. For that, I could always choose a legit four-wheeler as my midlife crisis car.
Knowing the exact model we wanted, we headed to the dealership and bought a brand-new 2019 Honda CR-V EX-L FWD in Modern Steel Metallic. And it only took five hours this time. Here’s hoping my son is too young to develop the same scars I did.

Hyundai Kona Turbo et Ford Escape Titanium 2020

Maintenant que le Salon de l’Auto de Montréal est derrière nous (j’espère que vous y avez été et que vous avez apprécié!), retournons à nos moutons, c’est-à-dire les impressions de conduite de nouveaux véhicules.
Avant d’attaquer le tout nouveau Ford Escape Titanium 2020, je dois vous glisser quelques mots sur le Hyundai Kona Turbo à traction intégrale qui m’a été confié durant la semaine du Salon de l’Auto. En fait, c’est presque un choix prémédité puisque ce petit véhicule m‘apparaissait comme l’outil idéal pour me déplacer en ville afin de participer à de nombreux évènements gravitant autour du Salon.

J’ai déjà couvert le petit Kona en juillet 2018. Il s’agissait alors d’un modèle presque identique à celui que j’ai eu la semaine dernière, soit une version haut de gamme Ultimate mue par un moteur à quatre cylindres turbocompressé de 175 chevaux combiné à la boîte auto à double embrayage et la traction intégrale. La plus importante différence, c’est que cette fois, la voiture était de couleur moins criarde (rouge au lieu du vert lime éclatant de la voiture de juillet !) et qu’elle était équipée de pneus d’hiver Michelin X-Ice.
Évidemment, si vous voulez en savoir plus sur le véhicule lui-même, puis-je vous référer à mon blogue de juillet 2018. L’exercice ici était de conduire cette voiture en hiver et d’en profiter comme véhicule de déplacements urbains. Non pas que la Kona n’est pas agréable sur autoroute mais ses dimensions et ses caractéristiques dont son encombrement en font un choix idéal pour la conduite en ville. Et surtout en hiver si l’on opte pour la traction intégrale.

Je vous fais grâce de mon attirance pour le look du Kona. Comme bien des amateurs d’autos, je suis tombé amoureux de son allure un peu «robuste» avec des carénages en plastique tout le tour des ailes et ainsi de suite. Au point de vue design, bravo Hyundai! Facile à conduire, confortable à souhait et très pratico-pratique (malgré un coffre limité), il n’est pas surprenant de constater que ce petit VUS (car c’est ainsi qu’on le considère) soit devenu si populaire. Ses performances, telles que décrites dans l’essai en été, sont remarquables. Mais, grâce aux pneus d’hiver Michelin X-Ice (que je critique souvent mais qui, dans le cas de ce Kona, ce sont avérés efficaces…), le petit VUS s’est déplacé avec facilité tant dans la neige que sur la glace et le pavé sec.

En ce qui a trait à la consommation, ce fut très semblable à la dernière fois avec une moyenne tournant autour des 10, 0 litres/100 km (souvenez-vous, nous sommes en hiver dans la neige en situation urbaine!). Évidemment, avec un prix dépassant les 32 000 $, ce petit VUS pourrait vous sembler un peu cher. Mais si vous optez pour une version un peu moins luxueuse, vous tomberez certes sur le genre de véhicule idéal au look surprenant pour vous déplacer en ville!
Le nouveau Ford Escape Titanium 2020
Dans le cas de l’Escape, nous passons à un tout nouveau véhicule qui joue un rôle important sur le marché. En effet, l’Escape fait partie du créneau des véhicules les plus vendus au Canada et aux États-Unis, celui des VUS compacts. Et de la concurrence, il en a! On n’a qu’à penser aux Toyota RAV4 et Honda CR-V, par exemple.

Comme on peut le voir, la version 2020 de l’Escape est entièrement redessinée. Et elle est nettement plus jolie que ses prédécesseurs. On dirait plus un véhicule d’allure sportive qu’un VUS. Les glaces latérales sont plus basses et plus grandes. L’avant est plus pointu et plus semblable à celui des autos (en voie de disparition?) de Ford. Oh oui! L’Escape 2020 est aussi un peu plus long que celui de 2019!

L’intérieur de ce très populaire VUS a également été revu. Le tableau de bord a été redessiné et il incorpore plus de modes électroniques et d’affichage vidéo que jamais. Le design n’en est pas trop agressif mais il est très moderne incluant l’écran multifonction vertical ressemblant à une mini télévision à écran plat. Quant à l’instrumentation, malgré son format «vidéo» élaborée, elle est facilement lisible. La version Titanium inclut la lecture à tête haute (HUD) de l’indicateur de vitesse (grâce à un petit écran transparent qui se soulève devant le pare-brise à la Mazda !). Vous allez remarquer qu’à la console, il n’y a plus de levier mais plutôt une commande rotative pour passer les vitesses. Le volant est un peu petit mais ses branches sont couvertes de commandes dont certaines sont redondantes. Toutefois, toutes les commandes sont à la portée du conducteur.

Les sièges sont confortables tant à l’arrière qu’à l’avant. Justement, les passagers d’arrière auront droit à plus d’espace pour les jambes que l’on retrouve dans bien des concurrents. J’ai trouvé un peu bizarre de voir des garnitures intérieures un peu simples pour une version Titanium. Toutefois, le tout m’a paru très bien assemblé alors qu’aucun bruit ne semblait émaner de l’habitacle. L’espace destiné aux bagages est raisonnable et il est agrandi en abaissant, bien entendu, les dossiers des sièges arrière. Si Ford publie des chiffres de dimensions arrière du nouvel Escape qui ressemblent de près à ceux du modèle de l’an passé, j’ai nettement eu l’impression que le constructeur avait agrandi l’intérieur du VUS.

Sous le capot du modèle Titanium qui m’a été confié par Ford Canada se trouvait un quatre cylindres turbocompressé de 2,0 litres combiné à une boîte automatique à huit rapports et à la traction intégrale. Ce moteur de 250 chevaux et 280 livres-pied de couple surprend par ses performances. Il est très rapide pouvant accélérer jusqu’à 100 km/h en moins de sept secondes. Qui plus est, il est relativement doux et silencieux. La suspension indépendante aux quatre roues transmet beaucoup moins les bruits de la route que bien des concurrents. Les pneus réguliers de mon véhicule d’essai avaient été remplacés par des Yokohama Ice Guard d’hiver dont nous avons souvent vanté les mérites.
Sur la route
Décidemment, les ingénieurs de Ford ont ait un beau travail avec le nouvel Escape Titanium. Avec le moteur EcoBoost de 2,0 litres, le petit véhicule est facile à conduire mais il est surtout plus rapide que l’on pourrait s’imaginer. J’ai déjà mentionné que les accélérations sont surprenantes. Ajoutons-y que les reprises sont plus que rassurantes. Si la direction (avec assistance électrique) ne transmet que très peu des sensations de la route, le freinage, lui, m’a paru très puissant dès que j’ai appuyé sur la pédale. La visibilité y est très bonne et le silence de roulement apprécié. Seule petite ombre au tableau, il y avait un petit bruit aérodynamique au niveau du toit panoramique, un désagrément qui, je crois, pourrait être corrigé par l’équipe du concessionnaire. J’ai gardé le VUS en mode de conduite «Normal» ce que je crois que la plupart des utilisateurs de telles camionnettes feront. Le mode «Sport» plaira certes à certains conducteurs plus hardis mais ce n’était pas le but ici. Il y a aussi le mode «Snow/Sand» mais je crois qu’avec les bons pneus d’hiver, celui-ci devient redondant. En passant, cet essai s’est fait en hiver autour de Montréal où la traction intégrale a été grandement appréciée. Si vous avez l’intention de tirer des remorques, le moteur de 2,0 litres permet une capacité maximale de 3500 livres, soit un peu moins que le poids de presque 3800 livres du véhicule lui-même en finition Titanium.
Le nouvel Escape est livrable en plusieurs autres versions dont celles de base mues par le moteur EcoBoost turbocompressé à trois cylindres (ce moteur a gagné plusieurs mentions du type Best Engine en Europe au cours des dernières années) qui fait 181 chevaux et 190 livres-pied de couple (il remplace le quatre cylindres turbo de 1,5 litre du passé) et les versions hybrides et hybrides enfichables que j’aimerais bien conduire un peu plus tard. Les versions de base sont à traction avant, le rouage intégral étant réservé aux versions plus huppées avec moteur plus puissant.
Mon véhicule d’essai était équipé de la fonction Stop-Start qui arrête le moteur lors d’un arrêt prolongé aux feux de circulation. Vu que j’ai fait beaucoup de déplacements urbains, ce système me fut utile pour atteindre une moyenne de consommation de 10,68 l./100 km ce qui se compare bien aux résultats observés chez la concurrence. Notez que les routes étaient enneigées et qu’il faisait aussi froid!
Le prix de base de cet Escape Titanium 2020 est de 40049 $. Ma camionnette d’essai incluait un ensemble spécial avec le toit ouvrant panoramique de 2300 $, des carpettes protectrices avant et arrière de 150 $, un article semblable pour le compartiment cargo de 150 $ aussi et la fameuse taxe d’accise fédérale de 100 $ pour la climatisation. Ajoutez-y les frais de transport et de préparation de 1850 $ et la facture totale passe à 44 599 $ !
Wow! Près de 45 000 $ pour un VUS Escape? Vérifiez un peu et «magasinez». Vous verrez que ce genre de prix en est devenu la norme dans ce créneau, surtout pour les versions les plus élaborées. Remarquez qu’il s’agit ici du prix suggéré du constructeur. Votre capacité à «barguiner» incitera le vendeur à vous faire une offre que vous ne pourrez, je m’imagine, refuser…
Qu’importe, Ford a certainement créé un «winner» ici. On ne peut que constater que le nouvel Escape est certes une grande amélioration sur l’ancien modèle et qu’il pourra facilement se mesurer à la concurrence. Il ne me reste plus qu’à essayer les versions moins élaborées. On s’en reparle…

Unlike those truck-based ancestors, this one is a crossover based on the same platform as a Cadillac XT5 and GMC Acadia. the Blazer interior impresses with its Camaro-inspired design elements — note the rotary air vents/climate controls in particular — that make it look as special inside as it does on the outside. Unfortunately, the quality of materials used is disappointing given the Blazer's price point. That's especially the case with the Premier and RS trims that can top $50,000 (shown above), but even lower trim levels are no nicer than compact SUVs (Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5) that cost much less when similarly equipped. Quite simply, the Blazer either needs a lower price or a ritzier interior. The Blazer is a midsize crossover, with exterior dimensions that put it in the camp of such vehicles as the Ford Edge and Jeep Grand Cherokee. It's also quite wide, resulting in more shoulder room in the back seat relative the Edge and all compact models. The Chevy Blazer comes standard with a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder good for 193 horsepower and 188 pound-feet of torque. That's not a lot of grunt for a vehicle that weighs 3,810 pounds, and is grossly less than the base engines of most similarly sized midsize competitors. Its EPA-estimated fuel economy of 22 mpg city, 27 mpg highway and 24 mpg combined is just OK given its meager output. While many other SUVs come standard with accident avoidance technologies, the Blazer keeps them exclusive to the top trim levels, and even then, only as options. Blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warning are included starting with the 3LT trim, but forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and GM's Safety Alert Seat can only be had as part of the Driver Confidence II package. 2017 Mazda CX-5 Long-Term Verdict
When MotorTrend road test editor Chris Walton first drove the thoroughly refreshed 2017 CX-5 in the spring of 2017, he came away impressed. Mazda improved on an already winning package (the previous generation won a comparison), adding a quieter, more refined interior, sharp new exterior, and retaining its fun factor. In June 2017, the 9,550 CX-5s sold made up 42.7 percent of all Mazdas sold that month. The vehicle is Mazda’s bread and butter, so we had to have one for a year to see how the redesign would hold up.
From the first week with the CX-5, I knew I would like it. My previous long-termers needed a few months to convince me of their worth, but the CX-5 won me over pretty quickly. I was struck by its curb appeal: Its chiseled face and character lines gave it an upscale look, and the optional Machine Gray paint sparkled in direct sunlight while the LED headlights, foglights, and taillights add to the luxurious look at night. The looks have aged nicely, as opposed to some rivals whose jarring lines and creases have already gotten a bit old. I, along with almost every first-time passenger, was also impressed by the interior’s simple elegance. Passengers were always surprised to find that level of luxury in a Mazda; I think the white leather makes it feel more upscale than the all-black interior, which can look a bit bland. Speaking of that white leather, it held up better than I thought it would after almost 30,000 miles. It didn’t get as dirty as I expected, and by no means do we baby these cars. The CX-5 gets passed around, and it’s been used to haul tons of photo gear haphazardly thrown in. Broken trim pieces and scratched leather are common in a support car, but neither had happened before the CX-5’s year was up.
Other things I appreciated were the 40/20/40 split rear seats, which made hauling long Ikea boxes and our helpers during a recent move a breeze. It was also very quiet at highway cruising speeds, a welcome trait for my ears on the many long road trips over the year. It’s as quiet as a Lexus NX cruising at 65 mph, according to a recent MotorTrend comparison. Mazda’s adaptive cruise control also aided in reducing my stress while sitting in traffic during my commute home. The system works well in stop-and-go traffic, and it was smooth enough to let me relax a little bit. It was great for commutes, but when I had to chase a couple of Workshop 5001 Porsches or a Mustang PP1 and Camaro 1LE up some twisty roads to shoot, it demonstrated it still had the fun and playful chassis we came to love in the previous CX-5. It also proved it can tackle some light off-roading when we took it on a 1,700-mile road trip through Utah.
There are a few things that keep the CX-5 from being the perfect ride. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto would’ve been nice to have, as well, but Apple CarPlay is now available for the 2019 model year. I also couldn’t stand the overzealous blind-spot monitoring that would warn me of cars that were two or three car lengths back.

If I were in the market for a small crossover, the CX-5 would be at the top of my list. According to Mazda’s November 2018 sales numbers, its improved formula is selling better than ever, with 10,882 CX-5s sold in November, up 20.6 percent YTD. Now that Mazda has added the 2.5L I-4 turbo from the CX-9 and Mazda6 as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the CX-5 is a sure bet in my book.

Souvenirs d’Italie et pneus d’hiver

Me revoilà! J’ai dû manquer deux semaines de publication de ce blogue alors que j’étais en voyage en Europe, plus précisément en Italie, Je m’étais promis de publier au moins un sujet durant ce temps mais deux facteurs m’ont empêché de le faire: le manque physique de temps (plusieurs d’entre vous devez savoir que les voyages organisés ont un horaire rempli à la seconde près) et un petit empêchement avec mon ordinateur portables…dont je ne veux pas parler ici tellement ça m’a fâché…
Qu’importe, malgré un superbe voyage de tourisme (je suis aussi très intéressé par l’histoire et l’architecture), je n’ai pu m’empêcher d’observer les autos et les camions. Et j’en ai pris quelques photos. Évidemment, l’Italie pourrait s’avérer être le pays idéal pour y observer des autos sortant de l’ordinaire…mais, curieusement, je n’y ai vu que peu de voitures exotiques ou remarquables. Malgré mes déplacements du nord du pays en passant par Venise, Orvieto, Sienne, Florence, la Toscane, jusque dans le sud vers Naples, Capri, Amalfi sans oublier l’imposante ville de Rome, je n’y ai vu qu’une poignée de Ferrari (surtout lorsque nous nous sommes arrêtés à Maranello, chez Ferrari même), moins que celles que je vois régulièrement ici dans Laval, peu de Lamborghini (sauf un tracteur de la marque) et à peine une poignée de Maserati.
Cependant, j’y ai vu toute une panoplie de véhicules d’autres marques, surtout dans le nord, incluant un nombre appréciable de voitures d’origine américaine. Par exemple, j’y ai aperçu au moins une dizaine de Mustang sur les autoroutes mais surtout des Jeep, des Jeep partout et tout particulièrement des petites Jeep Renegade (qui sont construites en Italie, ne l’oublions pas), des Jeep Wrangler, et des Jeep Grand Cherokee, la majeure partie de celles-ci mus par un moteur diesel. Croyez-le ou non, mais il y avait des pick-up Ram dans le nord du pays mais surtout des Dodge Journey rebaptisés Fiat Freemont et mus, bien entendu, par un moteur diesel.
L’Italie est un superbe pays qui a beaucoup à offrir mais les espaces de stationnement sont plutôt limités. C’est peut-être ce qui explique l’engouement que les Italiens ont pour les petites autos (dont, surtout, la toute récente Fiat 500, un vrai succès pour le constructeur) et les petites motos (d’ailleurs, n’est-ce pas le paradis des scooters comme les légendaires Vespa?).
Néanmoins, comme le dit le proverbe, une image vaut mille mots. Je consacre donc ce blogue à des photos uniques prises un peu partout en Italie. Elles font partie de mes découvertes et, j’en suis sûr, certaines d’entre elles rappelleront de bons souvenirs à ceux qui ont déjà visité ce pays!

La seule Lambo que j’ai pu photographiée…en fait LE seul puisqu’il s’agit d’un tracteur de la marque! Si vous ne saviez pas, Ferrucio Lamborghini produisait des tracteurs agricoles avant de faire des autos exotiques.

Si vous allez à l’île de Capri, vous y verrez de drôles de limousines décapotables dont la plupart sont basées sur des produits Fiat et Nissan.

Pneus d’hiver!
 Vous l’aurez senti, c’est déjà le temps de penser à vos pneus d’hiver, surtout si vous roulez au Québec. Déjà, plusieurs gens me posent des questions sur les produits offerts sur le marché. Toutefois, ne croyez pas que je puisse répondre à vos questions si je n’ai pas des détails précis de votre véhicule.
Par exemple, un lecteur (malheureusement anonyme…j’apprécierais votre nom, au moins!) me demande si des Nordman 7 à crampons serait un bon choix pour son GMC Sierra 2004. Le Nordman 7 est un excellent choix…mais je ne sais pas s’il s’agit d’un Sierra 1500 ou 2500 ou même 3500 car si c’est un 1500, le Nordman 7 (une extension de pneu finlandais Nokian) est tout indiqué. Mais si c’est un 2500 ou un 3500, il faudra regarder à un pneu de type LT!
De plus, si vous m’écrivez pour savoir quel pneu acheter mais que vous ne détaillez pas le véhicule, je ne pourrai que répondre vaguement. Par exemple, Luc me demande quel serait le bon pneu d’hiver pour son Honda Pilot 2007. Mais de quel Pilot s’agit-il? Les Pilot sont livrables avec des jantes de 17, 18 et 20 pouces! Il y a une foule de pneus qui peuvent aller sur un Pilot, des très abordables GT Radial (un bon pneu en passant) aux plus coûteux mais tellement plus spécialisés Nokian R3 qu’il me faudrait les dimensions d’origine. En passant, Luc, si vous optez pour les Nordman 7, ce serait aussi un bon choix pour vous. Toutefois, je vous invite à visitez votre détaillant de pneus qui saura identifier vos besoins spécifiques. Dans votre cas, je ne peux faire que des recommandations «générales».
Enfin, mon bon ami et conseiller personnel dans le domaine, Stéphane Parenteau (une véritable encyclopédie lorsqu’il est question de dimensions et d’adaptations) de Pneus Premier Choix du boulevard Ste-Rose à Laval m’incite à vous répéter que c’est le temps de voir à vos pneus d’hiver maintenant. Et si vous avez une de ces voitures si populaires toutes neuves comme les Honda CR-V ou Civic, vous feriez mieux d’y voir tout de suite (à moins que vous l’ayez déjà fait) avant qu’il ne reste plus de pneus d’hiver à prix abordable pour votre véhicule. Si vous attendez trop, il ne restera plus sur le marché que des exemplaires de luxe beaucoup plus coûteux!  Et ne croyez surtout pas que les manufacturiers de pneus en fabriqueront d’autres même si la demande est grande. Ils ont déjà terminé la production des pneus d’hiver 2018-19 et ils sont à produire les pneus d’été 2019-20 au moment où vous lirez ces lignes!
