Big U.S. auto makers are racing to equip pickup trucks with fuel-efficient engines, a surprising pivot away from their longstanding practice of putting gas-guzzling engines into large vehicles.

Ford Motor Co. F 0.93% , General Motors Co. and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles FCAU -0.10%NV all now are betting truck buyers want better gas mileage in addition to raw horsepower. That insight has touched off a surge in innovation.

First off the starting line was Ford, which in May began selling a diesel F-150 pickup truck that achieves an estimated 30 miles per gallon in highway driving—viewed by many in the industry as the Holy Grail of fuel economy for trucks. That is better than the 27 mpg rating on the 2018 Ford Taurus family sedan, even though the truck outweighs the car by about 1,000 pounds.

GM this fall is set to introduce a revamped full-size Chevy Silverado pickup with an engine smaller than the one under the hood of some Toyota Camry midsize sedans.

Fiat Chrysler is countering with a new Ram 1500 pickup equipped with a hybrid system that uses an electric motor and battery pack to supplement the gas engine and improve efficiency. Ford, which four years ago pioneered the use of aluminum body panels in pickup trucks to save weight and fuel, plans its own hybrid truck.

Days before the meteorite fireball exploded over the skies just a few miles away, Chevrolet created its own spectacle in downtown Detroit at NAIAS 2018 by unveiling the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.

The newest version of Chevy’s most important product has shed about 450 fuel-saving pounds from the previous version that’s currently on the market, and has added a number of new ergonomic and technology features. Its diesel engine will also be made in Flint, Michigan.

Every little edge is important as Chevrolet continues its decades-long tussle for supremacy in the highest-profit segment of the U.S. auto market with Ford’s F-150 pickup, America’s best-selling individual nameplate for decades running, and with a new version of the Ram truck due out this year.

Chevy also has created an edge with its introduction of the Colorado mid-size pickup a few years ago.

“Chevy is the only brand with a three-truck line-up” including a heavy-duty sub-brand of Silverado, Sandor Piszar (right), GM’s director of Chevrolet marketing, told brandchannel on the floor of 2018 NAIAS. “In fact, GM has sold more pickup trucks for the last four years than our competitors.”

Piszar shared more about how Chevy is positioning its overhauled entry in the robust pickup segment in our latest NAIAS Q&A:

Sandor, what are the most significant features about the new Silverado that will make it a stronger competitor to F-150 and the new Ram? 

There are some key things. Strength is certainly a factor, and GM is approaching this segment with a smarter way to go to market—a mixed-materials strategy that involves the right material for the right application.

Silverado has a steel bed; F-150 has an aluminum bed. So part of your marketing the new Silverado will focus on continuing to take swipes at the aluminum bed in the F-150? One of your counterparts at Ford told us that these efforts haven’t hurt sales or consideration for the F-150.

You wouldn’t use a hammer made of aluminum to pound something. We’re the leader in high-strength steel for beds, and we’re taking that to the next level. We’re maximizing the volume of that bed, and even our short box features a higher volume than the standard box of competitors.

We also have a power-up-and-down tailgate, and we have integrated tie-downs in each corner of the truck, which feature twice the strength of the [tiedowns] in the current truck. We also have nine moveable tie-downs. For truck folks using the truck for real work, these are very real and important innovations. We also have a corner-step bumper to accommodate steel boots. It’s the most versatile bed in the industry.

Silverado has been part of Chevy’s “Real People, Not Actors” brand campaign in recent years. Will that continue with the new truck?

You will see us maintain our “Real People, Not Actors” message because it resonates with consumers in a very relatable way. People connect with that and will focus on the strengths of trucks and what makes a Chevy truck the right buy.

It’s a creative construct that has given Chevy a high level of flexibility. We’re able to truck it up and give a very specific message that appeals to truck customers. Real people are truck folks. The message we’re conveying and the environment are all very truck-centric.

It has lifted the entire Chevy brand and builds awareness and alignment as tiers 1 and 2 and 3 all have the same, cohesive messaging and go-to-market strategy. It’s a truck-specific message, but it still fits the brand.

How else are you engaging customers in the new Silverado? 

Beyond “Real People” you’ll see a message about being the most dependable, longest-lasting pickups on the road. Dependability is one of the top reasons for purchase. We don’t take that lightly. Everything we do to engineer this truck reinforces that mindset, down to our powertrain lineup with the availability of six powertrains.

Ford introduced a new Ranger mid-size pickup truck at NAIAS this week in a bid to catch up with the Chevy Colorado. And yet just a few years ago most people in the industry were saying that the “lifestyle” buyer for smaller pickups was a thing of the past. What happened?

Obviously we’re flattered by the launch of the Ranger. We’ve sold more than 300,000 Colorados since launch and it’s been a huge success. We’re building every truck we can and we have continually invested in this space since launch. It’s an important part of our go-to-market strategy (and) a distinct buyer from larger pickups.

Certainly there has been a core pickup buyer through economic highs and lows but there is an opportunity for growth again with first-time buyers. In the specific case of the mid-size truck segment, research showed that it’s not that people didn’t want a mid-size (truck) but that it had to meet their needs.

They weren’t finding the technology and comfort features that they wanted. Colorado ignited the entire segment. That was a win for Chevy but it also brought back mid-size trucks and increased sales for competitors too. Suddenly competitors are waking up to the fact that mid-size is growing and coming back.

Ford Stresses Fitness After Failing to Seize on Strong Revenue

Ford Motor Co. has stepped onto the scale and found it’s out of shape.

The automaker signaled it’s even more resolute in the diet prescribed by its new CEO after reporting another underwhelming profit on Wednesday. Ford hasn’t coped well with rising costs because of bloat within its product lineup and engineering budget.

Ford “should still be performing at a higher level” despite raw materials getting more expensive for all automakers, Chief Financial Officer Bob Shanks said. Those costs and adverse exchange rates have exposed Ford’s “lack of fitness.”

After years of Ford posting disappointing profit margin, Chief Executive Officer Jim Hackett has laid out a regimen that includes slashing $14 billion in spending on materials and engineering over the next five years. Along the way, the company will kill off struggling car models and offer far fewer iterations of models that do survive.

Swelling Costs

Ford’s fourth-quarter earnings reinforced the problem it’s had keeping costs under control. While automotive revenue rose to $38.5 billion and beat estimates, profit matched the preliminary result that the company reported last week, which prompted the biggest selloff in almost 18 months.

The shares slipped 0.6 percent to $11.98 as of 7:38 p.m. in New York, after the close of regular trading. Ford’s stock rose just 3 percent last year, trailing gains by General Motors Co. and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV.

Ford has warned that rising prices for steel, aluminum and other metals, plus wrong-way currency swings, could be a $1.6 billion headwind this year, after dealing a $2 billion blow to 2017 results. When asked why these factors are affecting Ford and not its peers, Shanks was candid.

“They’re fitter and so they’re still able to generate — despite whatever hit it is to their business — they’re still able to hit a margin that’s appropriate,” he told reporters at Ford headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. “Our issue is that we can’t do that. That’s why the fitness initiatives are so extremely important to us.”

Culling Cars

When warning last week that profit will decline to between $1.45 and $1.70 a share in 2018, Ford laid out a plan to cull cars and focus only on low-volume, high-margin models. Products like the Escape and EcoSport crossovers will only be offered in 10 or 20 iterations, a 98 percent reduction from the plethora of trim levels and options available now.

Wall Street has grown wary of Ford. Its forecast for this year reneged on former CEO Mark Field’s promise that earnings would rebound after 2017. Instead, Hackett warned at a conference last week that this will be a “bad year.”

“I and my team are not satisfied with this level of performance,” Hackett said on a conference call Wednesday. “We see 2018 as the opportunity to prove to you that we can sharpen operational execution.”

While Hackett, 62, is cutting costs elsewhere within the business, he’s also spending big to roll out robot taxis, driverless delivery vehicles and electrified autos over the next few years.

‘Lot of Frustration’

“There’s a lot of frustration,” David Whiston, a Chicago-based auto analyst with Morningstar, said before Ford released earnings. “People feel like it’s not going to get better any time soon.”

While F-Series pickups continue to perform well for Ford, the top-selling vehicle line in America since the Reagan administration is about to be challenged by revamped rivals. GM unveiled a redesigned Chevy Silverado and Fiat Chrysler showed a new Ram 1500 last week at the Detroit auto show.

Ford has new model introductions of its own, with plans to roll out 23 vehicles worldwide this year. Those include a hot rod Edge crossover and two large SUVs, the Expedition and Lincoln Navigator. Next year, the automaker will bring back the Ranger mid-size pickup in the U.S. after it was dropped from the market in 2011.

Over the next five years, Ford will begin generating “quite a nice return” from offering digital services to cars, Shanks said on the conference call, without elaborating.

But in the race to electrify its lineup, Ford lags GM, which already sells the battery-powered Chevrolet Bolt, as well as Tesla, which has a larger market value. GM also plans to roll out robot taxis for testing next year, roughly two years before Ford.

“Ford is right to focus on new product launches and mobility efforts, but until there is perceived stability in operating margins and traction for new initiatives, we see little change in valuation multiples,” James Albertine, an auto analyst with Consumer Edge Research, wrote in a report to clients. He lowered his target price for the shares by $1 last week.
