Did the Ram ProMaster City Kill the Chevy City Express?
Chevrolet has announced their small van segment will lose the Chevrolet City Express. The City Express is on the way out as production is set to end with the last order placed in September 2017 with no renewal planned. What does this mean? The only remaining Chevy City Express vehicles are available, but only for a while before they are gone. The City Express peaked in 2015 with a total of 10,283 vehicles sold. For reference, in the first year of the Ram ProMaster City, the van sold more than 11,000 vehicles in its debut sale year.
What Makes the Ram ProMaster Worthwhile?
In many respects, the Chevy City Express is a fine small van that was made it possible for businesses to have a reliable vehicle that provides more than adequate space at 122.7 cubic-feet of cargo space and decent fuel efficiency. The 2018 Chevrolet City Express gets up to 24 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway. However, there’s even more value with the 2018 Ram Promaster. The 2018 Ram ProMaster equips a 9-speed automatic transmission to its 178 horsepower engine that provides better fuel efficiency, reaching 28 highway MPG as well as more towing power with 174 lb-ft of torque. The horsepower provided by the City Express is just 131 horsepower and 139 lb-ft of torque. This puts the 2018 Ram ProMaster in the lead, powered by a 2.4-Liter four-cylinder that can handle carrying heavier loads than the City Express. Since the engine is stronger, the ProMaster can handle carrying more weight and a heavier payload. By comparison, the City Express only gives drivers 1,500 maximum payload compared to the Ram ProMaster that provides 1,713 pounds of maximum payload.
The Ram ProMaster is a smaller vehicle compared with the Chevy City Express, but the Chevy City Express seats only two people. The Ram ProMaster provides seating for five and has more than adequate space with 74.2 cubic feet of storage space. Not to mention, spacewise, the Ram ProMaster takes care of drivers and front seat passengers with a great amount of space for legroom and comfort. Spacious and powerful, the ProMaster lives up to the name.
Conclusions
While they both have their upsides, we feel the Ram ProMaster is superior due to having more to offer customers. There’s a remarkable amount of small urban commercial vans that have popped up in recent years, but few have the perks of the Ram ProMaster. We at Kendall Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram want to help our customers find the vehicle that suits their needs best. Call Me the Ram ProMaster Pro
I just spent a week each with a Ram ProMaster 2500 cargo van and the smaller ProMaster City from FCA. And rather than driving aimlessly around in these purpose-built haulers, as automotive journalists turned loose in utility vehicles often find themselves doing, I put them to something approximating the real test. With a daughter graduating college 170 miles away, a car that needed towing from Connecticut, and a warehouse full of They Might Be Giants t-shirts to cart around New York, there was some real work that needed doing. No need to imagine these things with a load when real ones were waiting to be moved.
Longtime readers will know that rock bands were my original introduction to van life, one of my first pieces for Automobile Magazine (“Our Roadies, Our Selves,” Feb. 1988) being a test of a Plymouth Voyager minivan undertaken on one of the very first tours by the “modern,” (later “alternative”) rock group, They Might Be Giants, then a duo, who became the first band I managed. (Still do.) The intervening years have seen me spend significant time behind the wheel of a veritable parade of boxy haulers while on band duty, with more seat time in Econolines, GMC Safaris, Chevy Express, Dodge, and Sprinter vans to my name than memories of beer-stained, pee-infused rock clubs, of which there are more than I can count.
The Sprinter was, of course, the van that kicked off the American van revolution of the 21stcentury. After decades of only the most incremental updates to the domestic van fleet, this new box out of Germany heralded a new era of vehicles that followed the European practice of unit body construction, with taller, more configurable bodies and more efficient engines, plus the additional virtues of better handling and braking, and generally improved safety.
Recently a young act I manage, the saxophone dance trio Moon Hooch, practitioners of what they call “cave music” (like house music, but more primal and raw,) put their own money down to buy a Sprinter and racked up a quick 80,000 miles on it. So far, so good, knock on wood.
Climbing out of a Ford Aerostar with 370,000 miles on its odometer, the Sprinter was even more of a revelation for Moon Hooch than it was for me, when I bought a brand new 3500 duellie for band use from my local Freightliner dealer in 2002. Ten years and 195,000 rock and roll miles on the dually demonstrated just how hard life is on a working van and how expensive it might be to keep such a vehicle in safe and reliable condition. But it made it, and in 2011 was sold on quickly for good money to live on with a new owner, the first of dozens who phoned about the ad I’d placed—response and resale value that said a lot to me about the Sprinters reputation among the tradesmen who typically use it.
Still, if the Sprinter led the way into new technology, the Ram ProMaster cargo van, which was up first for me in my 2018 ExtraVanGanza, speaks just as clearly to the giant leap the American market took in recent years, especially at FCA. The ProMaster’s predecessor, the vans sold largely unchanged by the former Chrysler from the early 1970s into the 2000s, spoke most eloquently to the calcification of American van technology. But this latest FCA effort, based on the top-selling Fiat Ducato van one sees all over the rest of the world, (like Ford’s Transit, it was designed in Europe,) is more curious than the Sprinter, notable for a front-wheel-drive arrangement and extreme driver forward cab and seating position, with exceptionally short front overhang.
Front-drive limits the upper limit of its tow capability, some will say, but I am unconcerned. With standard 3.6-liter V-6 gas engine making 280 horsepower, 260 lb-ft of torque, it is sufficiently hale and hearty in 2500 trim to tow a 1957 Chevrolet 210 four-door on a U-Haul auto transport trailer while returning gas mileage in the high teens. Steering is good with a reasonable turning circle and the ProMaster managed to pack a graduating college senior and all her worldly possessions into its cavernous hold without objection.
It is, to be clear, an all-business, no frills vehicle, devoid of distraction, which is kind of refreshing. Though the two front seats are comfortable and the driving position superior, its fixed steering wheel and unfinished cargo area, plus that the fact that there is no passenger van setup available from the factory, limits its utility as rock band transport. They also never let you forget that you’re in a commercial, lugging vehicle. Unlike, say, an optioned-up RAM pickup, where you might lose sight of the fact that you are in a truck, the ProMaster reminds you that you are a working stiff pretty much all of time. That said, I think there is pride in labor and in presenting the facts honestly.
So it is, too, with the RamMaster ProCity, a small, front-drive van that compares to the Ford Transit Connect, Nissan NV200 (aka the official taxi of New York City), and Mercedes-Benz Metris. It’s unmistakably a van.
Though it has as many features as your average passenger vehicle of a few years back, it seems Spartan to the novitiate. With interior materials a couple notches below best in class and no rear or side windows aft of the front doors to look out of, there’s a definite penalty box feeling to the ProMaster City we’re testing, though available windows might lend an uplifting airiness to the proceedings. But it really is a van. Sold around the world by Fiat as a Doblo and assembled in Turkey, it has been massaged for the American market but retains the enormous utility of the original—and for many van intenders will do just as well as a full-sizer. It rides better than most, a credit to its all-independent suspension, a rarity these days. With FCA’s 178-hp, 174 lb-ft 2.4-liter Tiger Shark four and heady nine-speed automatic transmission, the very ones we saw in the late Chrysler 200, it gets out of its own way pretty well while returning 28 EPA highway mpg (24 overall).  In sum, it works and handles like a van (nimble, but a body roll Pro) but gets better gas mileage. And, stars willing, it will be reliable and long-lived, like a van’s supposed to be.
ProMaster Pro conclusion: Touring rock bands may need to look elsewhere, but these are worthy machines. Van consumers have never been so spoiled for choice.

2019 Ford Transit Connect Wagon First Look: Budget Hauler for Boomers
The cheerfully compact Ford Transit Connect wagon and van created a new small-commercial-van segment in the U.S. when it arrived in late 2009. Early success attracted copycats from Nissan (the NV200 in 2013 and its rebadged twin Chevy City Express in 2014) and from Ram (the 2015 ProMaster City). By 2015 the segment had swelled to 91,000 sales, but it has shrunk by almost 14,000 units since. Last year Ford’s Transit Connect sales dipped below their 2012 no-competition level. Queue the urgent refresh, with a new target audience!
Who’s Ford planning to lure now? Baby Boomers on a budget engaged in “Third Act” leisure or entrepreneurial activities that require hauling stuff around. The near-ideal hip-high slide-in driver seat, the low 2-foot lift from the ground to the load floor, and the seven-passenger occasional grandchildren seating are touted as AARP attractions—you know, like the ground-floor master bedroom of the automotive world. Ford also promises to drive home the marketing message that it delivers “everything you need in a minivan, with nothing you don’t—such as DVD players and vacuums—at an unbeatable low price.”
Just in case that’s not enough, for 2019 Ford is further sweetening the Transit Connect’s recipe with two new engines, a new transmission, and redesigns of the nose, tail, dash, and rear suspension. There’s also new connectivity gear, easier-to-operate seats, and seven new driver-assist features—perfect for when principle driving senses and reaction times start to dull. Of course, the refresh preserves everything that made the second-generation Transit Connect wagon (all new for 2014) so versatile and popular: a choice of short and long wheelbases with seating for five, six, or seven, a choice of 180-degree opening rear doors or a liftgate, and a 2,000-pound towing capacity (with the gasoline engine). Let us just say right here that most of what follows is likely to hold true for the panel-van version of the Transit Connect, but info about that one is under wraps until next month when Ford unveils it in Indy at the National Truck Equipment Association’s Work Truck Show.
Let’s start with the engines, about which no specific output numbers are being shared yet. New for the Transit Connect is a 2.0-liter direct-injected flex-fuel four cylinder that’ll likely produce output similar to that of its Focus fitment (160 hp and 146 lb-ft). The more interesting one is a segment-first offering: a 1.5-liter turbodiesel dubbed “EcoBlue.” This engine was designed in Europe in a joint venture with PSA (Peugeot-Citroën-DS), though Ford took the lead on the 1.5-liter variant. Techie features include a variable-nozzle turbine on its single-scroll turbo, an electronically controlled thermostat that maintains higher engine temperatures to thin the oil for lower friction, a variable-displacement oil pump that saves energy at idle and lower speeds and loads, and diamondlike low-friction coatings throughout the engine. U.S. models get an intercooler and a structural plastic oil pan that increases sump capacity and reduces noise. The basic block design is inherited from the 1.5- and 1.6-liter Euro-Ford Duratorq engine, but the new engine upgrades from single- to dual-overhead cams, and the injection pressure jumps from 23,000-29,000 psi and can provide five injection events per combustion cycle to smooth and quiet the engine’s operation. Ford anticipates an EPA highway rating of at least 30 mpg, and claims the payload capacity will exceed that of the Ram EcoDiesel 1500 pickup (1,100-1,600 pounds). This engine will hit the road first in the Euro-market EcoSport small crossover. (We should note that the 2.5-liter Duratec four- and six-speed automatic will remain available but only to fleet purchasers of the base XL wagon running propane or compressed natural gas conversions.)
These new engines will be mated to a new eight-speed automatic transaxle derived from the GM/Ford joint-venture nine-speed by pruning one gear for lower-cost applications. The Transit Connect will be among the first vehicles to offer this transmission, which will support standard auto stop/start on both new engines.
Other dirty bits coming in for a redo include the rear suspension, which gets revised geometry. Repositioning the spring mounts allows them to induce a bit of preload to the torsion beam, which in turn permitted a switch from dual-rate to simpler single-rate rear coil springs and allowed for a wider range of damper tuning with an aim to improve ride quality without any handling degradation. The only other changes of note are to the brake pads, all of which get a new copper-free compound, and the Continental tires, which feature new construction that improves rolling resistance at little or no cost in terms of ride/handling/wear.
In terms of styling, the whole nose is new and aligns with the vaguely Aston-Martin-esque look that has spread throughout the Ford range. New front lighting features HID headlamps with LED fog and accent lighting. Beneath the new front-clip sheetmetal lie a few structural reinforcements for surviving small-overlap crashes.
Inside a new dash design features a high-mounted “floating” 6.5-inch screen supporting the latest SYNC3 connectivity with Ford+Alexa personal assistant functionality and a standard 4G LTE modem capable of connecting 10 devices to the internet. There’s also wireless device charging in a cubby beneath that screen and two USB ports to charge devices from. Rear passengers can have their own temperature and fan controls, plus both 12-volt and 110-volt outlets. The suite of new driver-assist features is headlined by standard forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking with dynamic braking support. These features and side-wind mitigation are all standard. Active cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane keep assist are also available.
Seat foam material is changed to improve comfort, and although the folding mechanisms carry over, the controls and levers that operate them are apparently redesigned for easier use. Due to the fragile nature of the prototype parts on display, we were not permitted to verify this claim.
Expect the new Transit Connect wagon to appear in dealers in the third quarter of 2018 as a 2019 model, available as before in XL, XLT, and Titanium trim levels with only a modest price increase from 2018 levels ($26,925-$31,555).
