2020 Chevy Sonic production ends in October to make way for EVs
[ad_1]
Chevrolet is gradually plucking sedans and hatchbacks from its American range. It quietly confirmed it will soon end production of the 2020 Chevy Sonic, one of its most affordable cars, in order to free up production capacity to build an EV.
Ford ruffled more than a few feathers when it trumpeted its plans to pivot away from sedans and hatchbacks in 2018. Chevrolet is following the exact…

EVs Finally Get Some Love from the Most Important JD Power Study
2018 Nissan Leaf
Fans of EVs say reliability is part of their charm: no combustion engine, fewer moving parts, no muffler or catalytic converter, less wear and tear on the brakes. Now there’s proof from the most recent JD Power Vehicle Dependability Study: The Nissan Leaf (main photo) ranks as the most reliable car in its class and two other EVs, the BMW i3 and the Chevrolet Bolt EV, are in the top three in their categories, or three EVs out of 23 cars highlighted by Power as most dependable.
The 2020 study of reliability among three-year-old (2017) cars anointed Genesis as the most reliable brand and the Lexus ES as the single most reliable vehicle with the average ES having one problem every two years. Buick is the most dependable mainstream brand while Chrysler and Land Rover are least dependable. Toyota and GM had the most segment awards while Cadillac has the biggest one-year improvement. Tech features showed the most improvement but they (or their users) are still the most problematic areas.
Power cautions that score differences of a few points may not be statistically significant.
The 2020 JD Power Vehicle Dependability Study, measured in problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). Tesla isn’t on the list because it won’t share access to its owners.
Of All Power Surveys, VDS Is the Most Important
JD Power runs a lot of surveys and this is the most important one because reliability at three years is useful and meaningful. In comparison, the Initial Quality Study (IQS) doesn’t find much wrong with cars mechanically 90 days in, so owners instead now get a chance to gripe about brake dust or volume knobs which is not, in our opinion, as meaningful as a repair that would require a tow back to the dealership.
VDS measures at three years because that gives problems a chance to build up, and that’s also the typical lease term, so VDS gives you an idea of how an automaker is doing over time if you’re buying new and is helpful for people looking for the best three-year-old cars. What you find is how the best individual models are doing. Power reports all car brands above and below average because when they tried years ago to report only above-average scores, USA Today or Automotive News got hold of the full report sold to automakers within a day. It’s harder to get drill-down information on individual model reliability from VDS. For that, you need Consumer Reports.
Top three models for the models where Power has enough data to report. Asterisk means only one or two cars were above average, not three.
The top SUVs, minivans, and pickups on the 2020 VDS.
Less Drilldown Than You Want?
Some segments aren’t reported because of small sample sizes or the inability to get “at least three models with 80% of market sales or four models with 67% of the market sales in any given award segment.” For details, check out the Power VDS release. Meanwhile, you won’t as a potential car-buyer find model breakouts for these categories: city car, compact premium sporty car, compact multi-purpose vehicle, large premium car, large premium SUV. Not enough responses, the company says.
Tesla is not reported for a different reason: Power asks for owner/lessee contact information from the automakers, and Tesla doesn’t provide it.
Tech Features Are Better, Still Problematic
In-vehicle tech, one of the features that goes into the overall problems-per-100-cars rating, showed the most improvement from 2019 to 2020 among the eight breakout categories (and 177 specific problem areas) that make up the overall score. Yet it’s still the most problematic category. According to Power VP Dave Sargent:
“Many owners complain about these systems early in the ownership experience and, three years later, they’re still frustrated with them. We’re seeing improvement, but automakers still have a long way to go to before they can declare victory in this area. … the rapid introduction of technology is putting increased pressure on dependability, so it would not be surprising to see problem levels plateau, or even increase, over the next few years.”
Overall, the 2020 industry average of 134 problems per 100 cars is the lowest (best) over VDS’ 31 years. VDS the past two years has improved by 2 points this year, 6 points last year. Cars on average rate 7 points better than SUVs.
Chevrolet Bolt EV, one of three EVs among JD Power’s most dependable cars.
Recognition for EVs
For the first time, a battery-electric vehicle is a segment award-winner, the Nissan Leaf, which finished ahead of the Chevrolet Cruze and Toyota Corolla. The Chevrolet Bolt EV was top-three in the small car category along with the Honda Fit and Chevrolet Sonic, and the BMW i3 was runner-up to the BMW 2 Series in the small premium car category. The i3 is primarily an EV but can also be had with a helper engine (gasoline) to extend its range.
If you bought a Lexus ES in 2017, it’s been to the dealer once for a repair last year (statistically speaking), and you’ll go again for another fix around 2021. The ES’ 52 PP100 (problems per 100 cars) is Power’s best ever in the study’s 31 years.
Something for Most Makers to Celebrate
Depending on how you slice and dice the data, lots of automakers are happy. Consider especially the automakers who were up the most, among those rated above average:
#12 Cadillac, improved by 35 PP100 (that is, problems per 100 fell to 131 from 166)
#11 Mazda, improved by 29 PP100
#7 Lincoln, improved by 28 PP100
#10 Ford, improved by 20 PP100
#3 Buick, improved by 15 PP100
#6 Volkswagen, improved by 15 PP100
Toyota had the most segment awards (top rating) with six including Lexus, and GM had five among Buick, Chevy, and GMC. GM brands don’t win a lot of comparative reviews but all their cars are more than good enough, and if you combine reliability with great lease or financing deals, sometimes just-okay is okay.
Being top-three gets you a medal at the Olympics and it’s a badge of distinction even if JD Power doesn’t license awards for first-runner-up or most-congenial. GM (Buick, Chevrolet, GMC) had 14 top-three finishes. Toyota-Lexus had eight top-three finishes.
But not everyone is full of smiles. Four automakers had twice as many problems reported as Genesis with 89 PP100: Volvo 185, Jaguar 186, Chrysler 214, Land Rover 220. Three of the four are luxury brands. A decade ago, premium-brand automakers could argue a premium car is more complex, so maybe it will spend more time at the dealership being serviced. But now among the top 10, positions 1-2-3-7-8 are premium brands, and with Porsche holding a top-five position the past few years, it’s hard for another German automaker to say that theirs needs more attention than Genesis or Lexus.
The corporate group with the most issues is Fiat Chrysler Automobile, or FCA. Of 32 brands in Power’s VDS, the FCA group holds positions 19-25-26-27-31. Ram trucks are doing reasonably well on sales, and the Chrysler Pacifica has lots of fans with more to come now that’s bringing back all-wheel-drive.

The Top 11 New Cars Under $20,000
Car shoppers in search of a cheap but reliable ride know the age-old debate of new versus used. Now, factor in some recent wrinkles: used car prices, while still lower than new, are on the rise, plus manufacturers are eliminating several low-cost sedans and hatchbacks from their lineups.
But there’s hope. There are still bargains for drivers willing to trade size for a lower price tag, especially if you sacrifice “luxury” features — do you mind manual-drive transmission and windows you crank by hand? If you don’t, you can find a 2019 model for less than half of the average price of a new car.
Choosing one of the cheapest new cars available today can be a smart financial decision. You get the reliability and manufacturer warranty of a new vehicle without going broke.
Shopping around for a car loan
It’s wise to shop around and compare offers on auto loans before heading over to the dealership. Consider starting with an online loan comparison platform such as our parent company, LendingTree. They have dozens of lenders in their network. You simply fill out one online form and you can compare up to five auto loan offers from lenders in minutes, based on your creditworthiness. Some of the lenders on their network may perform a hard pull on your credit, but keep in mind that multiple hard pulls at one time will only count as one pull.

The 11 cheapest new cars under $20,000
According to Edmunds, the average transaction price for a new car rose to an all-time high at the end of 2018: $36,495. Most buyers don’t have that kind of money in the bank to purchase a car in cash. In fact, Americans owe about $1.2 trillion in auto loans. Because most people rely on car loans, buyers are stuck with monthly payments and long repayment terms. For new car buyers, the average loan payment is $530 spread out over more than 68 months. Such a long loan term can add hundreds or even thousands of dollars in interest charges.
But you can dramatically reduce the debt you take on and lower your monthly payment by selecting a less expensive vehicle. Today, cheap new cars can be reliable and safe; you just might have to skip extra features such as a leather interior or premium sound system. We looked at the least expensive cars available today and ranked them by base price. We also considered ratings from Kelley Blue Book (KBB) experts, consumers on Edmunds as well as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Cars that offered standard technology and safety features you might find on pricier vehicles also received greater weight in our selection.
Here’s our list of the 11 cheapest new cars under $20,000 that you can buy right now.
2019 Chevrolet Spark LS 2019 Ford Fiesta sedan 2019 Chevrolet Sonic 2019 Honda Fit 2019 Kia Soul 2019 Kia Forte 2019 Chevrolet Cruze 2019 Subaru Impreza 2019 Toyota Corolla 2019 Volkswagen Jetta 2019 Honda Civic 2019 Chevrolet Spark LS MSRP $13,220 3.8 out of 5 by KBB experts; 4.9 out of 5 by consumers on Edmunds (10 reviews) 29 city/38 highway/33 combined MPG
Chevrolet gave the Spark a new infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as USB ports and an upgraded front-end style with the 2019 model. Although manual drive is standard, you’ll get a nice package of features in an ultra-affordable brand-new hatchback. While this car has lower KBB ratings than other cars on this list, it’s highly rated by consumers on Edmunds. And while it hasn’t been rated by NHTSA, it received “good” ratings from IIHS though the agency only gave it “acceptable” marks for its child seat anchors and a “basic” grade for front-crash prevention. This car is tiny, so cargo space and rear legroom may be limited.
2019 Ford Fiesta sedan MSRP $14,260 4.2 out of 5 by KBB experts; not yet rated by consumers on Edmunds 27 city/35 highway/30 combined MPG 4 stars NHTSA
The Fiesta comes in several different shapes the lowest priced of which is the sedan but goes up to the “hot” hatchback, the Ford Fiesta ST, for about $21,000. Though the car earned 4 stars from NHTSA, the agency notes a safety concern during side crash tests. Critics, however, praise the Fiesta for its sporty ride, capable four-cylinder engine and an “infotainment” system that offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Plus, this may be one of your last opportunities to get your hands on a new Fiesta — Ford announced plans to drop the car from its lineup.
2019 Chevrolet Sonic $15,420 MSRP 4.3 out of 5 by KBB experts; 4.0 out of 5 out by consumers on Edmunds (1 review) 5 stars NHTSA 27 city/38 highway/31 combined MPG
A subcompact sedan or hatchback — the sedan is cheaper — the Sonic sips gas and has a lot of technology to offer. The base model of this car may surprise you with what comes standard — and what doesn’t. A 7-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, keyless entry and rear view camera are standard; yet power windows and automatic transmission are not. So you could roll down your windows by hand while telling Siri to play your favorite track. Of course, you could add power windows, automatic transmission, cruise control and other tech features for an additional cost. Prefer a hatchback? The hatchback pricing starts at $18,020.
2019 Honda Fit $16,190 MSRP 4.6 out of 5 by KBB experts; 5.0 out of 5 by consumers on Edmunds (3 reviews) 5 stars NHTSA 29 city/36 highway/31 combined MPG
The Fit knows how to make the most out of a small space. A subcompact hatchback, the Fit is one of the smallest new cars available, but the “magic” back seat can segment in a 60/40 split and flip entirely up and down to allow you to carry things long or tall in addition to passengers. The least expensive Fit comes with a 5-inch touch screen, a rearview camera and keyless entry.
But it also comes with a manual transmission, which you can upgrade to an automatic for $800, which still leaves the price under $17,000 and offers the choice of adding safety features in the Honda Sensing suite.
2019 Kia Soul $16,490 MSRP 4.3 out of 5 by KBB experts; 4.5 out of 5 by consumers on Edmunds (20 reviews) 5 stars NHTSA; IIHS Top Safety Pick 24 city/30 highway/27 combined MPG
With a strong boxy look, most people seem to love or hate the Soul’s styling. A subcompact hatchback/SUV crossover, the Soul’s silhouette means there is plenty of headroom, even in the back seat. The overall effect of the styling is that the Soul seems bigger on the inside, which, besides being a neat trick, causes some owners to call their Kia Soul a TARDIS, in reference to the cult-favorite TV series, Doctor Who.
The base model Soul includes Bluetooth, voice recognition, a rearview camera and a 5-inch touch screen. An automatic transmission however will set you back another $1,700, which puts the lowest price for an automatic Soul at $18,190,still under out $20,000 limit. The Kia Soul EV, however, is well over this budget, at $33,950.
2019 Kia Forte $17,790 MSRP Not yet rated by KBB experts; 4.6 out of 5 by consumers on Edmunds (5 reviews) Not yet rated by NHTSA; IIHS Top Safety Pick+ 27 city/37 highway/31 combined MPG
While the compact Kia Forte may at first look like a nondescript sedan, it does have a cool “tiger nose” grill and some of the highest safety ratings in the industry. And all Kia cars, including the previously-mentioned Soul, come with a basic warranty of five years, 60,000 miles, with roadside assistance, which is considerably more than the common three years, 36,000 miles. Standard on all trims is an 8-inch touch screen, daytime running lights and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Although KBB experts have yet to rate the 2019 Forte, they gave the 2018 model 4.2 stars. The 2018 model also received 5 stars from NHTSA.
2019 Chevrolet Cruze $17,995 MSRP 4.2 out of 5 by KBB experts; 2.5 out of 5 by consumers on Edmunds (2 reviews) Not yet rated by NHTSA 28 city/38 highway/32 combined MPG
Barring any changes by General Motors, this will be the last year of the Cruze; it is one of the models Chevrolet announced in November 2018 that it is cutting. While it’s available, the Cruze comes as a sedan and as a hatchback, the latter of which has a base price of $19,620. Critics say both vehicles have a great ride quality that is usually only expected from a larger vehicle.  Automatic transmission is standard, along with Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth and a 7-inch touch screen. You could also opt for a diesel engine on this car, a rarity these days outside of luxury vehicles or trucks. Though the 2019 Cruze lacks an overall rating from the NHTSA, the safety agency gave it 5 stars in front crash tests and 5 stars in rollover crash tests.
While the car has much lower ratings from consumers than other vehicles on this list, the Cruze only had two consumer reviews as of publication. The 2018 model had a 4.1 out of five rating by 25 consumers as of publication.
2019 Subaru Impreza $18,595 MSRP 4.3 out of 5 by KBB experts; 4.6 out of 5 by consumers on Edmunds (10 reviews) 5 stars NHTSA; IIHS Top Safety Pick+ 28 city/38 highway/32 combined MPG
Notably, all-wheel-drive (AWD) is a standard feature on the Subaru Impreza in both forms: a sedan, which we focus on here, and a hatchback, which Subaru calls a 5-door. Standard features for both include a 6.5-inch touch screen, smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and a rearview camera. With this practical technology and the highest safety scores in the industry, the Impreza is a great practical choice. But it will not give you a premium feel unless you want to pay to add on extras on top of the highest trim. The price of the highest trim by itself does not include leather seating a moonroof or premium audio. Critics note that downsides include slow acceleration and interior materials that are inferior when compared with rivals.
2019 Toyota Corolla MSRP $18,700 4.6 out of 5 by KBB experts; 4.3 out of 5 by consumers on Edmunds (16 reviews) 5 stars NHTSA 28 city/36 highway/32 MPG combined
The Toyota Corolla has been a bestseller for years thanks to its combination of quality, affordability and safety. The 2019 Toyota Corolla also comes as a hatchback at a slightly higher price, $19,990, just under our $20,000 limit. But for purposes of this list, we focus on the 2019 sedan — a 2020 version is now available with a redesigned look and a new version of driver aids for a higher price. It also comes as a hybrid model ($22,950). The 2019 model, however, still has bells and whistles such as a standard safety package including features like pre-collision warning and lane departure alerts with steering assistance.
2019 Volkswagen Jetta $18,745 MSRP 4.4 out of 5 by KBB experts; 4.2 out of 5 by consumers on Edmunds (39 reviews) Not yet rated by NHTSA 30 city/40 highway/34 combined MPG
The Jetta is a compact, German-designed sedan with quick acceleration, a large trunk, and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto as a standard feature. It also has a surprisingly long basic warranty: six years, 72,000 miles. What’s not standard is an automatic transmission, which costs $800 more. Even higher trim levels come with a “digital cockpit” for the driver, which includes a configurable screen over a foot long on the dashboard, behind the steering wheel. Although the 2019 Jetta is thus far lacking a rating by the NHTSA, the 2018 model received 5 stars.
2019 Honda Civic $19,450 4.6 out of 5 by KBB experts; 4.6 out of 5 by consumers on Edmunds (20 reviews) 5 stars NHTSA 25 city/36 highway/29 combined MPG
Just squeaking in under the $20,000 threshold, the Honda Civic sedan comes standard with a manual transmission and Honda’s safety suite: Honda Sensing. The Civic also comes as a coupe and hatchback, but both slightly exceed the price limit with a base MSRP of $20,650 and $21,450 respectively, although you could check for rebates in your area that could knock the price down. Like most base models in this price range, the base Civic has Bluetooth, a rearview camera and a 5-inch screen.
Buying a new car
Buying a new car doesn’t mean you have to be in debt for six years or more. By looking at compact and subcompact vehicles, you can buy a brand new car without taking on a lengthy auto loan. All 11 of the cheapest new cars on this list offer a lot of value for their price, making them a smart choice when you’re on a budget.
If you’re ready to buy, you can time your purchase to take advantage of dealership and manufacturer incentives and save thousands.

The auto plants of the future may have a surprisingly human touch
(Reuters) – Carmakers have big plans for their next generation of factories: smarter designs, artificial intelligence and collaborative robots building a wide range of vehicles on the same line.
General Motors assembly workers connect a battery pack underneath a partially assembled 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV vehicle on the assembly line at Orion Assembly in Lake Orion, Michigan, U.S., March 19, 2018. Photo taken March 19, 2018. REUTERS/Rebecca Cook
The plants will also feature a component they say is the secret ingredient to flexible manufacturing: humans.
SAIC-GM’s factory in Shanghai, which opened in 2016, is one of the world’s most advanced auto plants, assembling Buick minivans and Cadillac sedans and SUVs, including the CT-6 plug-in hybrid for U.S. consumers.
GM’s Shanghai plant is expected to eventually produce new electric vehicles, primarily for the Chinese market, executives have said.
The plant, which GM operates with Chinese partner SAIC Motor Corp Ltd, feels almost like a scene from a Star Wars film, with battalions of machines quietly working in self-directed harmony.
Collaborative robots, or “cobots,” painted matte green and unrestrained by the steel cages that surround their larger industrial cousins, are being programmed to work alongside humans on the line. One unusual operation advanced models now handle is installing gears in transmissions.
“They can actually feel; they can pick up a gear set (and) mesh the gear into a transmission,” Paul Buetow, GM’s China manufacturing chief, said on a recent tour of the plant. The robots reduce strain on humans and improve quality and consistency.
Globally, automakers are embracing Industry 4.0 — a term coined by German manufacturers for the digitalization and automation of assembly processes — and the consensus is that fewer people will be required in future factories. But humans will still be needed.
“This is not about cutting head count,” said an insider familiar with industry efforts to upgrade and streamline auto plants in the United States, China and Europe.
The focus instead is on improving flexibility and efficiency between machines and humans as automakers figure out how to build multiple models — powered by gas engines, electric motors, or both — in the same factory.
“It’s not just blood and sweat that goes into manufacturing on an assembly line,” said United Auto Workers president Dennis Williams. “It’s critical thinking that automation can’t replicate.”

DOING THE DIRTY WORK
A new generation of cobots is working alongside humans at General Motors Co plants from Shanghai to Orion Township, Michigan.
The Orion plant, north of Detroit, is one of the industry’s most flexible. It builds three models on one line: The gas-engine Chevrolet Sonic, the battery-powered Chevrolet Bolt EV and the self-driving Cruise AV.
More than 800 robots work there, including a half-dozen cobots painted green to denote they can safely operate around humans.
The machines handle the “dirty, dull, difficult and dangerous” tasks while people do the work requiring dexterity and intelligence, says Marty Linn, GM’s principal engineer for robotics.
In one section of the plant, cobots glue protective pads onto headliners, a tough job for humans because the glue is heated to scalding temperatures before it is applied.
At another station, a cobot takes new spare tires off a conveyor belt and stacks them on a cart. This, GM’s Linn said, was a job workers universally hated because it was repetitive and back-breaking.
At the end of the line, cobots ensure headlamps are properly aligned. They will also be used to test sensors on automated vehicles, Linn said.
Markus Schaefer, head of production and supply chain at Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz Cars, said the German automaker is “paring back automation” in final assembly to boost flexibility.

“We need this because we are making a greater variety of derivatives and, as a premium automaker, we make highly individualized vehicles,” he said.
Schaefer said Mercedes will eventually have plants that can build vehicles with different powertrains and with both front- and rear-wheel drive.
The automaker is converting its showcase Sindelfingen plant to build the GLA, a compact front-wheel-drive utility vehicle, as well as its rear-wheel-drive S-Class luxury sedan.
SHAPING THE FUTURE
How collaborative robots and other digital tools are used will determine the size and layout of future factories – and how many humans work there.
Ford Motor Co executive Joe Hinrichs created a stir last October when detailing the automaker’s vision of a future factory for electric vehicles, which have fewer parts than those with combustion engines and thus would require far less floor space, fewer workers and lower investment.
But like other major global carmakers, Ford appears reluctant to invest in dedicated electric-vehicle plants until there is sufficient – and consistent – demand to justify the expense.
Ford has years of experience building different types of vehicles on one line, including versions of the Focus compact with gasoline engines and electric motors.
Ford has installed a few collaborative robots at its recently renovated Louisville, Kentucky, truck plant. The company is also using digital tools such as including augmented reality to map new assembly lines, and predictive analytics to schedule repairs and maintenance before machines break down.
The company has no immediate plans for a separate, highly automated plant for its next-generation electric vehicles, some of which are expected to share factory space with traditional combustion-engine models, according to sources familiar with Ford’s strategy.
An April report by Barclays’ global auto investment team predicted “robots won’t kill all automotive jobs,” at least not in the near term.
Auto companies are working on “perfecting the combination of human and robot,” according to the report, because “the human touch is still necessary.”
Even Tesla chief executive Elon Musk, who long praised robots’ virtues and promised to turn his California electric car factory into a highly automated “alien dreadnought,” has had something of an epiphany.
Bedeviled by technical glitches, Musk recently tweeted: “Excessive automation at Tesla was a mistake … Humans are underrated.”

The auto plants of the future may have a surprisingly human touch
(Reuters) – Carmakers have big plans for their next generation of factories: smarter designs, artificial intelligence and collaborative robots building a wide range of vehicles on the same line.
