I have been listening pretty much exclusively to Goths-era tapes for like a week now, and it's probably one of my favorite eras for tapes. Every single Goths song absolutely rules live, and there's some other faves in the core setlists for summer/fall 2017 as well - this show saw a solo Against Pollution, which then became a full band regular in November! I've heard quite a few fantastic duo Wear Black renditions but this is the first full band one I've heard and it kicks ass. Plus this whole show has great bass and backing vox, which you know are my favorite.

Read this post in 2017 and went, oh hey that sounds like it slaps! Forgot about it for several years. It is now 2024 and I've just read the whole thing in a day, and I return to this post to give a heartfelt: HEY THIS SLAPPED

I don’t usually go for Young Adult Dystopian, but I just read the most amazing book. 

The Scorpion Rules is set in a world where global warming sparked as series of brutal resource wars near the end of the 21st century.  The United Nations tasked their best and brightest AI, Talis, to come up with a solution.  The AI ended up infecting the Earth’s computer-controlled weaponry and taking over the world, implementing a series of laws: 

Combustion engines are banned

Anyone who starts a major war gets nuked

Anyone who wants to be  general or high-level politician needs to have a child

The first-born children of all these leaders are raised by the AI’s flunkies in undisclosed locations (though they are allowed to visit a few times a year to build bonds with their families).  If two nations start a war, the hostage children are all killed.  So you’d better be serious about fighting if you don’t want to talk things out. 

Naturally these schools are Circle-type institutions.  The students get a premium education, but they are subject to blatant conditioning towards the programs’ ideals. 

Into one such school comes a teenaged boy – the grandson of the new President of MURICA, who is too cool for school!  So rebellious and not conditioned!  Charming to everyone, never giving up or giving in!!  Totally ignorant of the destructive impact of his actions have on bystanders!!! Waking up the squares and the sheeple!!!!  YEAH MURICA. 

BUT.  He is not the hero.  Or even the love interest. 

(Though KID MURICA does have sympathetic motivations and is a likeable guy.)

The hero is the Princess of Halifax, who is maybe definitely certainly going to die because this kid’s country intends to attack not!Canada for access to the Great Lakes. Meeting Kid America wakes her up to some of the uglier realities of her life that she’s been wilfully blind to… but she is still totally prepared to die to enforce the peace.  Her quest is not to rebel but to find leverage that will allow her to negotiate an acceptable outcome with MURICA and the all-seeing robot overlords.

I just.  I can’t tell you how nice it is to see such a Canadian story in this genre.  And maybe it plays to stereotype a bit, but who cares?  So do Iron Man and Captain Kirk; that doesn’t mean that Iron Man and Star Trek are garbage.

the Grace Baniran SK was on my wishlist for a while, but i never thought i'd find it- but luckily i managed to get it for Christmas! it was my first time wearing it, so i was very excited -w-

i'm very happy with how this coord turned out! i got this bolero specifically to go with this skirt and i think it worked out great! the blouse with the bolero was an experimental choice, but i was super glad for the detachable sleeves in the end because it was wayyy warmer than the forecast originally said

i got a pocket put into this skirt so i could wear Milk-chan instead of a big bag '^ ^ i love Milk-chan too much fhsjsf

it was gifted to you on christmas about two years ago. you’ve always dwelled on wanting one of your own, but never had the balls to go out of your way to purchase one because they could get pretty pricey. a lot of your extensive research and effort you spent scouring the internet to find the perfect vinyl record you’d like pointed to signs of something completely out of your budget. well, not completely, but unrealistically obtainable with the numbers you’ve been receiving paycheck-to-paycheck from your job.

so, each time that the holidays were around the corner, and whenever your mother would ask for your christmas wishlist, you’d throw in several other items you’d like but never included the idea of wanting a vinyl record. that secret desire of yours was something you kept to yourself, something you never brought up in conversation, nor was it something you’d expect to receive unless it was coming out of your pockets.

lo and behold, on the morning of a wintery cold december 25, when you were gathered around the christmas tree with your siblings and parents to open your presents, there sat a box with a fragile sticker stuck to the wrapping.

since then your prized possession has followed you to college and your off-campus apartment whom you share with your three other close friends.

intak, especially, took a liking to your music player and never misses an opportunity to use it. whenever he visits your place (which is almost every day) he makes it his unrelenting mission to flip through your vinyls and place his pick of the day on to the turntable. his personal favorite is cigarettes after sex, a band you actually introduced him to.

while you don’t mind sharing things, especially with your partner, you’re pretty sure intak has used your vinyl record more often than you have. ultimately, you don’t mind. it’s rather endearing knowing that what’s yours also belongs to him.

shota doesn’t even need to ask for your approval. in fact, he already knows your answer will always allude to a ‘yes,’ but he does it anyway despite the electronic device already in his possession.

naturally you grew up owning multiple generations of nintendo ds’s. when nintendo came out with a new updated version you’d go to the game store to trade it in for store credit just to get the latest release. this routine continued up until middle school when your gaming hobby no longer prevailed itself in your interests.

as months passed and 2017 eventually rolled by, the internet buzzed with life after nintendo’s announcement about the upcoming hybrid console came to light. rest assured that you were one of millions who preordered the device and waited impatiently for it’s hard launch date to release in store.

but again, school started to pick up and extra curricula’s were time consuming, that playing video games became less and lesser of an option for you to indulge in.

leave it to shota to pick up your slack. because if it’s not super smash bros that he’s try-harding at, it’s either the suika game, animal crossing (if he really feels like it), or pokemon. an odd rotation but who were you to judge.

“wHat!” he yelps from the couch. “how did he dodge that!”

you giggle at his typical gamer-behavior, closely reminded of yourself.

the sony cyber-shot camera has been by your side since you were in the 5th grade.

it was a hand-me-down from your father’s box of electronic gadgets he owned back in the day; a lot of which were collecting dust in the garage for not being used in so long.

while tossing things away to relieve the clutter and deciding what to keep, you remember discovering the digicam at the bottom of the pile after laborious digging. your father briefly taught you how to turn it on and off, what button to press to take a picture, how to record a video, and the different settings you could play around with.

your digicam has followed you around the world to different countries for family trips, witnessed you graduate from high school, contained a lot of embarrassing photos of you and your friends, watched you grow since elementary to your first day of college, and captured numerous flicks featuring new faces.

when you started dating jongseob, your photo gallery has been nothing but candid pictures of you and him (mainly of you).

your boyfriend is constantly bringing it along with him to events or outings, because, in his defense, he just wants to create some memories for you both to look back on someday. sometimes he goes out of his way to point and direct you on how to pose.

once, over dinner, you asked jongseob if he’d rather upgrade to something better and not outdated, like a canon or even a proper film camera. however, he is not one to budge and refuses to give up the obsolete digicam he unintentionally took ownership of.

“it’s special,” he pouted. “and sentimental, too.”

you smiled, “i guess. i just can’t help but wonder if you prefer a greater upgrade.”

“trust me, this has everything i need. now show me that pretty smile of yours.”

Some drama from a small corner of the internet, thx to my partner:

Plants Vs Zombies Heroes is a shockingly-good hearthstonelike released in 2016 and last updated in 2017. It has seen continued modest popularity, you can usually find a couple of people online at any time, 100+ when streamers are playing or in discord organized events. Vods from popular streamers usually get 10k views so this is a small but pretty healthy community.

Community consensus is also that this is pretty well balanced. Aggro, midrange, & control are all ~viable for both plants and zombies, t2 or offmeta strategies regularly take games off t1 strategies, etc. Most ppl have been playing long enough to have all the cards or there's a way to set up an AHK script to watch ads for you while you sleep to earn packs

Then, this:

This gets rolled out really weirdly. Somebody leaks balance changes and broadly everyone is like "???". Weird fake or hypothetical wishlist of balance changed ig? but no. a few days later it goes live. On ios only--as of now android hasn't updated and I'm not sure when/if it will

I'm not good at game but broadly the balance update is 1. nerfs to plants, particularly aggro 2. buffs to zombies, particularly lategame 3. A lot of card draw is now "summon a random card from the card pool" instead of deck 4. One zombie had creature type "clock pet zombie" and now it's just "pet zombie" rip

Also it's buggy as hell. Winter melon, which freezes a random zombie, instead freezes a random plant. There's a zombie who depletes the enemy super meter just by existing in ur hand.

There's a lot of rumors idk the truth of

- this balance patch was planned in 2019-20 and they forgot about it so the meta it's intended to patch is 5 yrs stale

- you can just not update and choose to play the old meta forever(?)

- popcap is making an intentionally bad update to drive players away so they have an excuse to shut down servers

Beyond a pretty universal sentiment that this patch fucked the balance bigtime, i think there's a broader question of like. popcap has been ignoring the game for 7 yrs. A lot of people have issues with the meta but i think they like the stability that no updates brings. Some people are really excited that this could indicate the possibility of new updates and maybe even new booster sets, while for others, adding new cards (even if they were fun well designed etc) would be change to something that was seemingly stable

Bastardo, the Rogue, the Magnificent, the Lover of Eleven Flights. His gimmick was that he slept with a dragon in each elemental nest and ended up with a Lot of hatchlings he had to find homes for. He had a Jawlocker that followed him around and kept him on the straight and narrow.

and SantaClaws! From 2013-2017 I used to take in-character present wishlist letters to SantaClaws and would reply, in character, with the gifts. I spent a lot of dragon money on them lol but I loved doing it. The letters were always so incredible.

Do you guys have any plans to whitelist more stuff for CSS at least since it seems HTML is a long ways away? I want to add pagedolls to my page of my ocs, but the needed tags aren't there. I know you can turn your icon into a pagedoll but that's not what I want. Things like animations, z-index, and making pagedolls stick would be scrolling would be a nice update.

Not trying to sound like a wishlister here, but I'm just saying there are some members who'd like it or would like to see other CSS tags whitelisted. Especially as the Artfight CSS resources doc was last updated 2017? or 2020?

We are currently working on adding more to the whitelist and creating a new CSS guide on the website. These will likely come sometime after July.

im still in awe that nintendo decided it was a good idea to reveal mario kart 9/10/x (im gonna call it mkx) with the official trailer for the switch 2. theres so much to talk about with it

24 characters in a race is double what we've ever had in any mario kart game ever, save for the surprisingly well performing mod for mario kart wii. if that can run well, as well as fortnite having 100 players per game since 2017, i think its safe to say that 24 racers isnt much of an issue as long as dedicated servers are available. that being said, it wont be too great if the roster isnt quite a bit larger than 8's. im expecting most if not all of the characters from previous entries to return, except for all of the guest characters. sure, it would be nice to see link and pacman come back, but this is mario kart. maybe make them dlc. hopefully they ditch the costumes from the main roster and give them their own section like how yoshi and shy guy have alternate colours in 8. replacing those would be new characters such as e. gadd, foreman spike, and ninji. honestly, writing out a whole wishlist for characters is something that would take up a lot of time.

id also like to say that this mario kart may not be like any other. how will 24 characters work on retro tracks? will the retro tracks work well with the established length of nitros? are the nitro tracks really as long as mario bros circuit seems to be? will we even get retro tracks, or will we get 32 completely new tracks? is this a reboot? its incredibly hard to tell with what little of the game we've seen.

also, what are they doing with the karts? are they going to be customizable? was that just a gimmick for mk8? is it going to be a mix of both? how many karts are we going to have? are we getting any classic karts other than the 3d hot rally one? how about ones based on previous games in the mario universe? despite how silly it would be, id love to race as a hill, starship mario, or just a block. i hope they get really creative with karts this time. while customization was nice, i want to see more creativity in designs that dont allow for customization.

im really hoping this sound track bangs as hard as every other game's. i dont think anything can top toad's factory unless it comes back in mkx. its really hard to predict what it could be like, but im assuming it might be a mix of 8's jazziness mixed with wii's electric bumping vibe just going off of the style they've given the game.
