Thredes and Vaynes 2001 Abstract / IDM / Minimal Techno / Experimental

I dunno, man, there's just something about a whole lotta San Francisco-made dance music that has always just kinda struck me as having some of the most boring sounds and approaches out of any scene that's out there. And it certainly doesn't apply to all of it, but a lot of SF stuff just seems to be too steady and doesn't really go anywhere, which is kind of my same complaint about the tech-house genre writ large too, I guess 🤷‍♂️.

Anyway, this 2001 12-inch comes courtesy of a small label called control (lower-case c was deliberate) that was run by San Fran IDM and minimal experimentalist Sutekh. As the first comp in their catalogue, Thredes and Vaynes is varied in its output, with an abstract and experimental supply of IDM, minimal techno, and microhouse, but none of it particularly grabs me, personally; it's just too bare-bones and quiet and, overall, not very engaging.

So, all respect to the folks who strive to make music that's different and off the beaten path, because without them, music does not really make any progress in the first place; but like many experiments, this doesn't really seem to produce anything that's all that remarkable 😔. Some may vehemently disagree with me, however, given this release's 4+ rating on Discogs.
