What is media like in the Rhine City verse? What are some recurring shows within a show?
We haven’t super got into it, and there’s quite a bit of media that’s fairly different too! A lot of in-universe series are based on scrapped story concepts, some of which long-time viewers of my blog might remember. Here’s a few things I came up with:
The Handy & Ydnah Show: The bastard child of Oobi and ATHF. It’s a PG show beloved by adults and stoners for it’s weird and surreal plots. The production of it is extremely mysterious; no one knows much about it even though it debuted in the 80s.
Tales of Aethra: Based on one of my oldest story ideas. It’s essentially a long-running multimedia fantasy franchise, though its popularity is comparable more to something like He-Man or Xanth than something like LotR. It has gotten a well-regarded animated series, several books, and a crossover set with MTG.
Mercenaries: Based on the story Eric originated from. Basically an over-the-top stunt-heavy action franchise a la John Wick, featuring a sendup of Snake Plissken as its lead (his name is Max Viper). Venus Crowley’s character Scarlet Love became a huge breakout and shot her to stardom.
Genesis: Based on the story David Paine originated from. A TV series about a future where some of the population have superpowers. It’s like Akira or Heroes back when the latter was good.
SafeWord: 90s cult classic comic about a queer S&M themed superhero. Was adapted into an equally cult classic film by Troma. Based on an old OC idea I had.
Virgin Killer: A more recent movie, an action-comedy about a young man who dresses in a Virgin killer and enacts vigilante justice on incel type guys. Based on a joke someone sent into my blog once.
Dick Kicker: Private Eye - A film noir parody series in the vein of Naked Gun. Very deadpan, very respectful of the genre.
Bottom Line: A blaxploitation series from the 70s about the eponymous martial arts hero who protected his community from various threats.
Arya Mournblade series: Long-running sword-and-sorcery fantasy series notable for consistently keeping the same actress from the original 80s film all the way to the 2017 finale. One of the films is infamous for featuring aliens as the antagonists.
Prudence Clay, Student Witch: A young adult fantasy book series by author Frida Spinney, which was hailed as the next Harry Potter by critics. The books have come under constant scrutiny for some extremely problematic elements, not helped at all by questionable comments she made online which inspired others to make similarly questionable comments (she’s friends with JKR if that tells you anything).
The Will of the Old Ones: A book by an author going by “Charlotte Webber.” It is a cosmic horror story whose content was overshadowed by a plagiarism lawsuit alleging the text was cobbled together from several unpublished manuscripts. The author making the claims of plagiarism was eventually found dead of an apparent suicide and the case ended up dropped. Hardly any discussion of the content of the book is made anymore, only the insanity around it.
Salty Steve’s Pirate Pizza Palace: A Charles Entertainment Cheese competitor founded in 1987. The discordant mashup of pirate and dinosaur theming has given it an odd charm that has helped it stay afloat, also helped by it getting a surprisingly good SNES game based around it.
Rubber Octopus: Popular mid 2000s indie rock band.
Six Shots: Based on an old scrapped superhero story idea. It’s not made yet, but it’s the next script James Gunn has for a movie, and Venus is gonna star in it.

Welcome to Mama’s 100 Quotes of Supernatural Challenge!!!
Wow! I am truly amazed at all of you wonderful people in Tumblr land. After 1 year on here I have 2000 followers!!!! (OK, so I know my blog is not a big ole bomb of excitement the majority of time but I am still tickled pink!)
So to celebrate my 1 year blog anniversary, I am going to do a 2-part thing. I put a poll out a few weeks ago to see what all of you would like and the 2 popular responses were a challenge and for me to do some more blog promo’s. You asked so shall you receive!!
I have searched and searched for some of the most memorable, funniest, best quotes from our beloved characters of Supernatural. Below the cut you will find the list. I have tried to include at least 1 quote from just about everyone (well, from a whole bunch of them anyways) but the majority of the quotes do belong to our sexy Dean, Sam, and Castiel! So keep on reading to see the list and the rules for this challenge!!
(And feel free to hop on over to my other part of this challenge, Mama’s “Spread The Love” Blog Promo’s and shoot me some suggestions!)
I have to give a HHUUUGGGEEEEE shout out to @atc74 for her help with my challenge image and for her assistance with some of these quotes!!!! Couldn’t have done this without you!
The rules are about as basic and easy as I can make them:
*This is a follower celebration so obviously, I would need you to be following me. However, if you have stumbled upon this challenge and would like to join, it is so super easy…. Just go click that follow button up there on the right!
*I need you to send me an Ask with your 1st and 2nd choice of quotes. It will be first come, first serve. BUT if by some holy miracle all 100 get taken, I am sure I can come up with some more to add to this list. AND you can chose up to 3 quotes if you would like to work ALL THREE into one story. (As a side note, if after a week I still have a ton of quotes not chosen, I will modify the challenge a little and allow you to send in your choice of quote/character)
*As for you fic, just keep it in the SPN fandom and make sure to highlight your quote(s) wherever you place it in the story. Just in case there is any confusion, the person you chose a quote from does NOT have to be the main character in your fic. For example, you may just really like a particular quote listed here from, say Balthazar, but you have a Dean x Reader fic in mind. That’s perfectly fine. Just make sure to have Balthazar in your story (with the quote) somewhere.
*This challenge is open to any and all ships and genres. I want y’all to write whatever inspires you when you see the quote of your choice.
*As usual, drabbles all the way to series are welcome. Just remember, anything over 500 words, add the KEEP READING line or, and I’m sorry, but I won’t reblog it. We all need to do our part not to overcrowd everyone’s dashboards.
*Deadline will be September 30th. I am giving everyone 2 months to do this. Beginning in Sept, I will occasionally start posting reminder posts to try to help everyone remember about their challenge deadline. I am well aware how we all take on a little too much sometimes and things get lost in the shuffle.
*When you get ready to post, make sure to tag me in your A/N and use the #mama’s100quoteschallenge in your tags. As usual, if I haven’t liked/reblogged within a day or two, please feel free to shoot me a message and let me know you posted it. I truly do try to go through all my notification everyday, but, well, you know, life gets in the way of all the fun things sometimes.
Ok, that’s it. Easy peasy, right? Well you made it this far with me so come a little further and read the quotes, pick your favorite, and send me your Ask! Most importantly, enjoy yourself and have fun writing your next masterpiece!!

Fall Movie Preview 2019
New Post has been published on https://esonetwork.com/fall-movie-preview-2019/
Fall Movie Preview 2019
Tumblr media
Fall movie season is here! This is always my favorite time of the year to see movies. There’s such a wonderful variety of films available to see in theaters. Everything from awards season contenders, indie darlings, and exciting space adventures! Get ready to make your way to the theater because this looks like it’s going to be a great season at the movies. Let’s take a look at what’s coming soon.
SEPTEMBER September 13th The Goldfinch Starring: Ansel Elgort, Oakes Fengley, Nicole Kidman, Finn Wolfhard Bring the tissues and prepare yourself for a rollercoaster of emotions because this is gonna be a wild ride. The Goldfinch is based on the Pultizer Prize winning novel by Donna Tart. This is one of the best books I’ve read recently, but it’s quite an emotional journey. It follows 13-year-old Theo Decker after the traumatic death of his mother in an art museum bombing. It’s a haunting and powerful story about the human condition once grief becomes a prominent force in one’s life. The film is directed by John Crowley with Roger Deakins as director of photography. That’s what I call must-see cinema.
youtube
Hustlers Starring: Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Cardi B, Lili Reinhart Based on a New York Times article, former strip club employees band together to hustle their Wall Street Clients during the late 2000’s financial crisis. This looks a bit like the heist of Oceans 8 meets the real world story of Molly’s Game. It has quite a star studded female cast of movie/TV/and music stars and is directed by Lorene Scafaria (Seeking a Friend at the End of the World, The Meddler.)
youtube
September 20th Downton Abbey Starring: Michelle Dockery, Maggie Smith, Hugh Boneville, Jim Carter You love Downton Abbey, I love Downton Abbey. Everyone loves Downton Abbey. I can hear the theme song playing in my head just thinking of the movie being released. That’s right, the beloved TV series is coming to the big screen. Hopefully, it won’t be anything like the season 3 finale. (Real fans know the pain and struggle. We can’t go back to that time.) In the film, Downton Abbey will be visited by the royal family. I’m sure it will make for quite an impressive cinematic experience. As a fan of the show, I can’t wait to see it all on the big screen!
youtube
Ad Astra Starring: Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones, Liv Tyler Just two months after showing the world that he doesn’t age in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Brad Pitt is back and he’s going to space. It makes sense, fall is the only logical time to release a film in the space genre. (The Martian, Interstellar, First Man, Arrival, Gravity were all released in the fall,.) Ad Astra is all about an astronaut who takes on a mission to uncover the truth about his missing father. The film is directed by James Gray (The Lost City of Z, The Immigrant). I just hope Brad Pitt gets to wear his iconic Hawaiian shirt. Audiences demand to see it again.
youtube
September 27th Judy Starring: Renée Zellweger, Finn Wittrock, Jessie Buckley, Rufus Sewell There’s nothing like a good biographical drama. Throw in musical numbers and it’s a hit in my eyes. Renée Zellweger stars as the iconic Judy Garland in this biopic that explores her life in 1969 as she arrives in London to perform a series of sold out concerts. Word from the Telluride Film Festival is that Renée Zellweger gives a very strong performance as Judy. Could she have an awards season run on her hands for Best Actress? We’ll see very soon!
youtube
OCTOBER
October 4th Joker Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Robert de Niro, Zazie Beets Joaquin Phoenix stars as the Joker in this standalone film that focuses on the origins of the DC villain. The film received an 8 minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival, which seems pretty excessive for any movie. I’m just not a movie applauder. It’s unnatural to me. I’m also not much of a Joker enthusiast so I can’t get too excited about this or the way it seemingly wants me to feel sympathy for the Joker. I don’t. He’s a terrorist. However, this is going to be a huge cinematic event. There are striking similarities to 70’s hit films The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver in the first trailers of the film. Director Todd Phillips clearly wanted to make a unique comic book film and this one will have people talking.
youtube
Lucy in the Sky Starring: Natalie Portman, Dan Stevens, Jon Hamm Another space movie! Fall movie season demands it. After returning from space, astronaut Lucy Cola begins to feel withdrawn and disconnected from reality. The film is loosely based on Lisa Nowak, an astronaut who lost her grip on reality after returning to earth after space travel. One thing’s for sure, with a cast including Natalie Portman, Jon Hamm, and Dan Stevens, this one promises some impressive acting.
youtube
October 11 Gemini Man Starring: Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen An assassin becomes the target of a mysterious government operative who can predict his every move. Soon he finds out that the mysterious operative is a clone of himself. Can Gemini Man help director Ang Lee (Life of Pi, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) find critical acclaim again after 2016’s underwhelming Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.
youtube
The King Starring: Timothée Chalamet, Robert Pattinson, Joel Edgerton Based on Shakespeare’s Henriad, The King follows Henry V as he takes the throne after his father’s death and navigates a kingdom filled with war, chaos, and political strife. While all of that is very interesting, I think we need to discuss the hair in this movie. First of all, there’s Timothée Chalamet’s bowl cut, which is quite a situation. So very round and tragic. Why Timothée? You know you have great hair, but the bowl cut is not your look! Then, there’s Robert Pattinson’s wig. It’s kind of amazing. The hair in this movie alone is going to keep me entertained for 2 hours. The King will be in limited release theaters on October 11th and begin streaming on Netflix November 1st.
youtube
October 18th Zombieland: Double Tap Starring: Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin This sequel comes 10 years after the popular zombie comedy first made its way to theaters. A lot has changed for the cast since 2009. Emma Stone has won an Oscar for La La Land, Jesse Eisenberg received a nomination for The Social Network, and Woody Harrelson has appeared in several projects including the Oscar nominated Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri and the critically acclaimed series True Detective. That doesn’t stop this cast for returning for a sequel!  This time around, the team is back in the American heartland to face off against evolved zombies.
youtube
The Lighthouse Starring: Robert Pattinson, Willem Dafoe I was initially indifferent towards this movie, but after watching the trailer I have to see it just to solve the mystery of who spilled those beans! Willem Dafoe is going INSANE over it. “Why’d ya spill your beans?” Someone please answer him before he turns into the Green Goblin! This movie is about two lighthouse keepers who try to maintain their sanity while living in seclusion on a remote island in Maine. (It’s also about beans, I think). The cinematography for The Lighthouse has a unique old Hollywood feel that is very intriguing.
youtube
Jojo Rabbit Starring: Taika Watiti, Scarlett Johannson, Roman Griffin, Sam Rockwell Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, Hunt for the Wilderpeople) directs and stars in Jojo Rabbit, an “anti-hate satire” about a young German boy whose imaginary best friend is an idiotic version of Hitler. One day, he discovers that his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their home and Jojo’s world is turned upside down. There’s no doubt this will be controversial, but the key word here is satire. Taiki Waititi is Jewish himself and the film is obviously making fun of Nazis.
youtube
NOVEMBER
November 1st The Irishman Starring: Robert de Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci Martin Scorsese’s long awaited gangster epic is finally premiering this November. The 3 1/2 hour crime drama (Scorsese loves a good 3-hour runtime!) focuses on the life of Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran a mob hitman who played a role in the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa. Netflix is distributing the film, but it will be available to see in select theaters on November 1st for cinematic purists. It will begin streaming on Netflix November 27th. (Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Go ahead and watch a 3-hour mafia epic with your family for the holiday! It’s Martin’s gift to you.)
youtube
Harriet Starring: Cynthia Erivo, Janelle Monet, Joe Alwyn The true story of Harriet Tubman and her harrowing escape from slavery that eventually led to the Underground Railroad. Cynthia Ervio is going to be amazing in this role! She was such a breakout star in Widows and Bad Times at the El Royale. Can’t wait to see her portrayal of Harriet Tubman.
youtube
Terminator: Dark Fate Starring: Mackenzie Davis, Linda Hamilton, Arnold Schwarzenegger The Terminator is back. In yet another installment of the franchise that will last forever, Sarah Connor and a hybrid human must protect a young girl from a newly modified Terminator from the future.
youtube
November 8th Doctor Sleep Starring: Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson, Jacob Tremblay 39 years after The Shining, it’s getting a sequel. Based on the novel by Steven King, Doctor Sleep focuses on an adult Danny Torrance as he meets a girl with similar “shining” powers and tries to protect her from a cult called The True Knot. There’s a lot of talent involved in this project, but The Shining is untouchable in terms of classic movies. There’s no need to make a sequel. Not to mention, this plot summary sounds kind of weak. Consider me very skeptical that this will be good.
youtube
Last Christmas Starring: Emilia Clarke, Henry Goulding, Emma Thompson A Christmas rom-com! Let’s jump for joy because a Christmas rom com is making its way to theaters! Last Christmas is all about Kate, a depressed woman working as Santa’s elf in a department store. She keeps bumping into the same man, Tom, who may help her find happiness in the holiday season. Henry Goulding/Emilia Clarke romance+Christmas? Sounds like a recipe for the perfect holiday movie!
youtube
Honey Boy Starring: Shia Labeouf, Lucas Hedges, Noah Jupe It’s no secret that Shia LaBeouf has had a chaotic lifestyle in his post-Disney days. It looks like audiences are about to find out what has gone on behind-the-scenes in Honey Boy. The film is written by LaBeouf and follows his own experiences with fame and the strained relationship with his dysfunctional father. Noah Jupe and Lucas Hedges will be playing Shia LaBeouf as a child and teen actor, while Shia LaBeouf will play his own father for a meta twist. As someone who grew up watching Even Stevens and saw Shia LaBeouf’s career progress, this is one of my most anticipated films of the fall.
youtube
November 15th Ford v. Ferrari Starring: Christian Bale, Matt Damon, Catriona Balfe American car designer Carroll Shelby and driver Ken Miles attempt to build a revolutionary race car for Ford to battle Ferrari at the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1966. The premise of this movie reminds me a little bit of Ron Howard’s Rush which is a very underrated movie that should be watched if you haven’t seen it.
youtube
The Report Starring: Adam Driver, Jon Hamm, Tim Blake Nelson The Report is a political drama about an FBI agent’s investigation into the CIA’s torture practice on suspected terrorists after 9/11. Adam Driver stars in the film and he’s about to have a major fall movie season. The Report and Marriage Story (more on that one a little later) could easily get him awards buzz. In fact, I predict he’ll be nominated for an Oscar for one of those roles. Plus, he’ll be in Star Wars in December. You’ll be seeing a lot of him in the next few months.
youtube
Charlie’s Angels Starring: Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, Ella Balinska, Elizabeth Banks Did we need another Charlie’s Angels reboot after the 2000’s movie trilogy and the ABC TV show? No. Yet there’s nothing Hollywood loves to more than to reboot a franchise we’ve just seen! This time around the angels are played by Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinski. Elizabeth Banks is directing and co-starring in the project.
youtube
November 22nd Frozen 2 Starring: Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, and Olaf go on an adventure to an enchanted autumn forest to find the origin of Elsa’s powers and save their land. Just when everyone finally got Let it Go out of their heads, Disney is gonna hit us with another Frozen movie. I have to admit, I’m intrigued by the concept of the autumn forest. We need more movies that take place in the fall! It should be it’s own sub-genre.
youtube
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood Starring: Tom Hanks, Matthew Rhys, Susan Kelechi Watson He’s already played Walt Disney, Captain Phillips, and Sully so it’s fitting that Tom Hanks would play Mr. Rogers on the list of “America’s favorite people” up next. The movie is all about the friendship between Fred Rogers and journalist Tom Junod. I cannot wait to see this. If you haven’t watched the documentary about Fred Rogers called Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, do it before this is released! It’s going to add so much depth to the cinematic experience.
youtube
November 27th Knives Out Starring: Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette When a famous crime novelist is found dead on his estate, a detective is enlisted to investigate the family. Knives Out is directed by Rian Johnson (Looper, The Last Jedi) and packed with stars. It looks a bit like Bad Times at the El Royale meets the style of a Wes Anderson movie. I’m very interested in the central mystery at play here, but I can’t lie, Chris Evans is the reason I’ll go to the theater for this.
youtube
December 6th Marriage Story Starring: Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver, Laura Dern This one is gonna be majorly sad, so let’s all take some time to prepare ourselves. A stage director and his actress wife struggle as their marriage falls apart and they proceed with a difficult coast-to-coast divorce. Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale, Frances Ha) directed the film which has already been receiving high praise from early festival screenings. This will definitely draw comparisons to Kramer vs. Kramer and Baumback’s The Squid and the Whale based on the trailer’s tone. The juxtaposition of the couple’s happy memories vs. the court scene at the end of the trailer is just heartbreaking. Marriage Story will be available to stream on Netflix December 6th.
youtube
December 13th A Hidden Life Starring: August Diehl, Valerie Pachner, Matthias Schoenaerts Few movies have affected me the way Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life have. It’s certainly not a movie for everyone, but it works for me. The unconventional narrative, epic cinematography, and orchestral score are unforgettable. Critics from festival screenings have said that A Hidden Life is his best work since The Tree of Life meaning I’ll need to see it ASAP. The film is based on a true story about an Austrian farmer named Franz Jaggerstatter who refused to fight for the Nazis in World War II. The trailer looks beautiful and poetic.
youtube
December 20th Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Starring: Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, John Boyega The latest Star Wars trilogy will complete with The Rise of Skywalker. Taking place after The Last Jedi, the members left in the Resistance will face the First Order once again. The conflict between the Jedi and the Sith reaches a breaking point bringing the Skywalker saga to an end. I have so many questions about this movie! Was Kylo Ren actually lying to Rey about her parents in The Last Jedi? Could they really be important people? Will she turn to the dark side like this preview suggests? (I hope not). Why is Palpatine (the villain who died in Return of the Jedi) talking in all of the trailers? Thankfully, J.J. Abrams is returning as director for The Rise of Skywalker to answer all of my questions and hopefully deliver a great Star Wars film.
youtube
Jumanji: The Next Level Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Karen Gillan Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was one of the biggest surprise box office hits in recent years, appealing to people of all age groups. It’s no surprise that The Next Level is being released so quickly after the massive success of Welcome to the Jungle. This time around, the group goes back into the game, but a few of their grandfather’s are sucked in as well. That means Kevin Hart will be playing Danny Glover and Dwayne Johnson will be portraying Danny DeVito.
youtube
Cats Starring: Francesca Hayward, Jason Derulo, Judi Dench, Jennifer Hudson, Taylor Swift Forget Star Wars, forget A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, forget A Hidden Life. Disregard everything on this list. Cats is going to be the cinematic moment of 2019! That CGI? Legendary! The actors could have worn cat suits or make up like the stage play, but director Tom Hooper decided that this is the 21st century…time to try out a new technique called digital fur technology! So now this movie exists. It’s difficult to describe what this digital fur technology looks like, but it’s not cats. I will say the trailer was released with plenty of time before the movie gets to theaters so there’s hope that the finished product will look way better than the original trailer. If I’m being totally honest, I love anything musical, so I’m totally going to see this.
youtube
December 25th Little Women Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet, Meryl Streep, Laura Dern Greta Gerwig’s highly ancitipated second film is a remake of the beloved Louisa May Alcott novel, Little Women. You all know the story, but I’ll do a quick plot recap anyway. Little Women is told through the eyes of Jo March as she recounts her life growing up with her 3 sisters: Meg, Amy, and Beth. Each have their own distinct personalities, but have a very strong bond with each other. The film reunites Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet as Jo March and Laurie for a mini-Lady Bird reunion. It also contains a little Big Little Lies reunion with Meryl Streep and Laura Dern. What a great Christmas day release!

Film Festival 2019 Preview: 12 Biggest Movies With Oscar Chances
Tumblr media
From Joker to Jojo Rabbit, check out the most anticipated releases from the fall festival season. As the summer moviegoing season comes to an end and the major glut of blockbusters dries up until Christmas, Hollywood’s focus turns to fall and the endless chaos of awards season.
Typically, the lion’s share of releases that come under this umbrella start in September and run until the end of December, which is the cut-off date for Oscars' qualifications. This year, there are plenty of potential candidates vying for critics’ and audiences’ attention, and most of them will be making their debuts during the major film festivals of the fall season. The four biggest festivals of this period are - in chronological order - Venice, Toronto, Telluride, and New York. These are the festivals you can expect the most hyped-movies of awards season to play at in some capacity, and for good reason.

The past two winners of the Golden Lion, Venice's highest honor, were nominated for or won Best Picture. Nine of the past decade's 10 winners of the Toronto People's Choice Award either won or were nominated for Best Picture, too. The batting average for fall festival season and Oscar success is too good to ignore, so studios jostle for attention amid crowded slates. This year, the stakes seem higher than ever and the offerings more varied and exciting than we’ve seen in a while. Here are some of the most anticipated releases from the major fall film festivals of 2019.
Tumblr media
Once Warner Bros. decided not to take Todd Phillips’s reimagining of the Jokers origin story to San Diego Comic-Con (along with the rest of their upcoming titles), rumors swirled that it was because they were choosing to submit it to festival season instead. However, even the most optimistic fans could not have predicted just how much hope the studio has in this movie. Not only will Joker make its world premiere playing in competition at the Venice Film Festival, but it will also make its North American debut in Toronto soon after, followed by its New York premiere at NYFF. It’s not uncommon for one movie to play all three festivals but unheard of for a comic book title to do so. Make no mistake: Warner Bros. is hoping to take Joker all the way to the Oscars. This build-up of hype and critical clout is certainly an excellent strategy for doing so, with the film’s star, Joaquin Phoenix, having previously won Best Actor at Venice and set to receive TIFF’s very first Best Actor award next month.
Tumblr media
This will be the first year of Fox Searchlight working under the Disney banner, and critics are eager to see how invested the company is in releasing the kind of esoteric, small-scale, and awards-baity titles that the studio has made their name from. The biggest and possibly most controversial title on their slate in 2019 is Jojo Rabbit. Directed by Taika Waititi, Jojo Rabbit tells the story of a young German boy during World War 2 who is fiercely dedicated to the Hitler Youth, and how his life changes when he discovers his mother has been hiding a Jewish girl in their attic. He also has an imaginary best friend who is Adolf Hitler, played by Waititi himself. It’s certainly a movie that will incite conversations, and alleged Disney sources have already started talking to the trades about their concerns with such a potentially shocking movie. However, Waititi is a master of tone, who can juggle big laughs with darker emotional beats, and this is the kind of story that only he could make for general audiences. All eyes will be on Jojo Rabbit for its world premiere at TIFF, where Waititi will also receive the festival’s new director award.
Tumblr media
A new Martin Scorsese movie is always a cause for celebration, and The Irishman is a long-time passion project the director has wanted to make for many years now. His first feature film since 2016's Silence - which was a box office disappointment - The Irishman brings together some of Scorsese’s most iconic collaborators, from Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci to editor Thelma Schoonmaker and screenwriter Steven Zaillian. Based on the story of Frank Sheeran, The Irishman follows the life of a mob hitman and his involvement in the Bufalino crime family as well as the role he may have played in the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa. Not only is it Scorsese's most expensive movie, with a reported budget of $200 million, but it's Netflix's priciest endeavor, too. The streaming service remains a much-contested topic on the festival circuit, but it will be hard for even the biggest skeptics to avoid or dismiss The Irishman as it makes its world premiere at the New York Film Festival.
Tumblr media
Last year, the documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, about the life of beloved children’s entertainer Mr. Rogers, was a surprise box office hit. Now, the biopic is here with none other than Tom Hanks, taking on the lofty role of one of the nation’s most popular pop culture figures. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood comes to us courtesy of Marielle Heller, who made waves last year with the Oscar-nominated drama Can You Ever Forgive Me?. Her take on the Mr. Rogers story follows an elderly Fred Rogers as he is being profiled for a magazine piece by a cynical journalist, played by Matthew Rhys. Marielle Heller has a deft and layered approach to biopics that helps her stand out in a saturated field, and the prospect of Hanks playing this universally adored figure is sure to set off many an awards prediction. Expect floods of tears at screenings when A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood premieres at TIFF.

Tumblr media
One of only a handful of titles playing at Venice, Toronto, and New York, Noah Baumbach’s latest drama, Marriage Story, to be released by Netflix, sees him once again returning to deeply personal territory. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson star as a married couple whose coast-to-coast divorce begins to push them to extremes neither could have predicted. Baumbach is no stranger to making movies about divorce. 2005's The Squid and the Whale was a semi-autobiographical exploration of his own parents' split. The buzz around Marriage Story has been especially loud, with praise singled out for both Johansson and Driver, the latter of whom has a very busy year ahead of him between this, The Report (also playing the festival season), and, of course, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Netflix has a full slate this year for awards season, so expect them to push this hard.
Tumblr media
Oscar-winning actress Renée Zellweger was everywhere in the early 2000s but took an extended break in 2010, appearing only sporadically in projects. In 2019, she's attempting a comeback by playing one of the most beloved and recognizable figures in Hollywood: the oft-imitated but never replicated Judy Garland. Judy, directed by British theater director Rupert Goold, will have its world premiere at TIFF in what is sure to be a much-talked-about screening. The story takes place in 1969 when Garland, at the very end of her life, headed to London to perform a series of sell-out shows that were some of her very last concerts. Biopics are a staple of festival season and sure to make an impression with Oscar voters, but Zellweger has a tough job ahead of her with Judy, especially since she seems to be doing all her own singing in the role.
Tumblr media
Writer-director Armando Iannucci is best known for his political satires, from The Death of Stalin to award-winning TV series like Veep and The Thick of It. The Personal History of David Copperfield takes him deep into the Dickensian territory but don't be too quick to write this off as just another historical drama. Dev Patel plays the eponymous protagonist while an all-star cast, including Tilda Swinton, Ben Whishaw, Peter Capaldi, Benedict Wong, and Gwendoline Christie, fill out the illustrious ensemble. Making its world premiere at TIFF, with its British premiere to follow at the London Film Festival, David Copperfield was recently picked up for distribution by Fox Searchlight, which signals at least some positive things for the company under Disney’s ownership.
Tumblr media
There are a surprising amount of movies playing at this year’s festival season that are adapted from articles. Hustlers may be the most anticipated of this bunch, if only because of its truly irresistible hook. Based on a piece from New York magazine, Hustlers follows a group of strippers, led by Constance Wu and Jennifer Lopez, who decide to take on the rich Wall Street jerks who visit their club every night and fleece them for all they have. Written and directed by Lorene Scafaria, with Adam McKay and Will Ferrell on producer duties, Hustlers has a tricky tone to nail. How do you tackle what these women did, acknowledge the Robin Hood-esque fantasy of it, but not romanticize just how dark the truth got? It’s a tough job but the movie also has serious indie breakout potential and it remains depressingly rare to see a film with a female majority cast alongside a woman director. Hustlers will make its world premiere at TIFF.
Tumblr media
Donna Tartt, despite having only written three novels, is one of the most celebrated American authors of her generation, and her third novel, The Goldfinch, won her the Pulitzer Prize. Despite the major impact she has had on literature and pop culture, Hollywood has never dared to adapt one of her meaty and extremely long books until now. Clocking in at over 800 pages, turning The Goldfinch into a movie was always going to be an immense undertaking, and one sure to be highly anticipated by the millions who read it. Directed by John Crowley (Brooklyn) and starring Ansel Elgort, Nicole Kidman, and Sarah Paulson, the drama follows the coming-of-age of a young man who survives a terrorist attack in an art museum and the painting he clings to as a source of hope as his life spirals downwards. Tartt's work has always embraced the Dickensian in its scope and emotional depths, so taking a book this long and condensing it two-and-a-half hours will not be easy. The Goldfinch has its world premiere at TIFF, one week before it opens nationwide on September 13.
Tumblr media
Director James Gray is a critical darling, but his work has struggled to find commercial success in the United States (although he remains extremely popular in Europe, especially France). However, Ad Astra has the potential to break out in a bigger way. Brad Pitt stars in the lead role, following on from a strong summer with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, as an astronaut sent on a life-changing mission. He journeys to the outer edges of the solar system in hopes of finding his father (played by Tommy Lee Jones), a fellow astronaut who mysteriously disappeared many years before. Gray compared the story to Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness and noted his desire to make as realistic a depiction of space travel as possible, which is a fascinating direction for him to take with his first foray into science-fiction. The movie has had its release date bumped around a lot this year, which often doesn't signal good news, but with Ad Astra making its world premiere at Venice, the hype remains very much in its favor.
Tumblr media
In-between working on Star Wars movies, director Rian Johnson took some time to make a murder mystery in the vein of Agatha Christie’s work, and he compiled a major all-star cast for his efforts. Knives Out, which will have its world premiere at TIFF, features Daniel Craig, Lakeith Stanfield, Toni Collette, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Christopher Plummer. Plummer plays a legendary crime novelist who is murdered during his birthday party, leading detectives Craig and Stanfield to investigate the case, with every member of the family a suspect. It's always exciting to see what a director who is a key part of a major franchise does in their downtime, and Johnson returning to his love of low-key genre fiction for a re-imagining of a classic set-up is too good to resist. It remains to be seen if Knives Out has awards appeal or will simply be marketed as a fun winter season caper in-between the blockbusters, but whatever the case, it's sure to have audiences intrigued.
Tumblr media
It’s safe to say that Christian Bale, regardless of the project, is almost always included in Oscar conversations. Following his latest nomination for Vice, he returns to the biopic genre with James Mangold’s take on one of the most notorious rivalries in motoring history. As the title suggests, Ford v Ferrari takes on the battle between two of the biggest names in cars as they raced at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans competition. Bale and Matt Damon play the driver and engineer brought on to Team Ford to help them defeat the dominant Italians of Ferrari. This is a pricey movie - one with a rumored $97.6 million budget - and a starry cast to match, but it's also now a Disney title that needs to be handled carefully. Will the studio give it the full red carpet treatment following its world premiere at Toronto?

Re: Destiel. I loathe fans who spam on Twitter, but I think most care about Cas but esp. Misha. I see a lot of support of him so that makes most Destiel fans ok in my book. They gloss over the treatment of Cas but maybe they get more entertainment than bitterness out of spn so I can't fault them lol U know what pisses me off? Tptb. Surprise right?? I just saw the qotd of filming on twitter and I'm like really? They can bait the shippers all day and night long but the moment people bite and 1/2
2/2 ask questions or talk about it they’re crazies, disrespectful and destiel doesn’t exist. Yeah… Can’t wait for the unspoken words of Dean… They’re probably gonna be about mary, crowley, the pie he didn’t eat or a motw from 3 seasons ago.. the most Cas will get is prob. a “u should have followed us, ur fearless leaders”. And then D/C fans will still be the delusional ones. This is more queerbaiting than every single stupid dirty joke Misha has made on Destiel in 9 years combined. Fuckers.
Under the cut, for long reply
Hello anon! Well yes, tptb are pure bs. But they have been doing it since day one. Spn queerbaiting is nothing new. Heck I think I this point there must be serious studies about it. At the beginning was meh, we knew they were doing it, some fans thought that deancas were endgame (some still do), and they let them do it. Of course they have been thousands of complainings about it, but the truth is that the majority of the fans, as I always say it, eat their crumbs. Spn wouldn’t be on his 13th season without his rabid fandom. A fandom that complains (included myself) about anything and everything, but at the end sit their asses to continue watching. But I have to stop watching spn because, gods because so many reasons, but above all the writing, the characterization was really a downer for me. The show was only giving me pain, I should enjoy a show, not dread it. I’m still holding on Cas because I love him and I love Misha and his acting. But if not for that it would`ve been sayonara ages ago. They bait the shippers, but the shippers take the bait, made 2000 slo mo gifs about it, 234 metas, then eat it, and say: yes more please! with a smile. Yes tptb are assholes, but who let them? If a fucking mixtape was more important that, Idk, Cas’ depression for example?
This thing with the ship and shippers…it’s a really though topic, everyone has their opinion, and the fandom wars are on a high point now more than ever. You know the difference between a few years ago and now imo? We loved the characters, seriously that’s it. And you could tell me “but shippers love their characters too”, yeah not so much. I think they love the characters as couple, not as individuals. An incredible painful example is Cas’ death, destiel shippers didn’t mourn him, they were expecting the man pain from Dean. That’s not love. Well at least for me it’s not. I started shipping dean and cas, because in the early seasons, they were really well written, and were amazing characters tbh. Dean wasn’t a complete asshole and Cas wasn’t broken or used as a punching bag, they have their issues ofc, it’s spn after all, but they still worked together. The story of the angel falling for the man that he rescued was a good one, and the chemistry was there in spades. For me it was progressive and slow, heck I liked Lisa for Dean tbh. I have never shipped a m/m couple before, not because I think it’s wrong (before some fucker think that), but because I didn’t see the same magic that I saw later with dean and cas. I still don’t see it in other ships. But in the middle of season 6 is where spn lost me. I saw what they were trying to do with Cas, and when Dean said to death “kill him already” that was the final strike for me. So I started living in fanon and with the memories of how great dean and cas were at some point. Now all I see is an alcoholic hunter with anger issues that mistreats Cas again and again, and Cas that is broken beyond repair, takes the abuse. And I know it’s the writers fault, and I hate them even more for that. Not for destroying my ship, but for how shitty they treat my beloved characters, how they destroy them individually.
Look, I defended destiel shippers now and then, but at this point I don’t know if I can anymore. Of course amongst the rabid are really great people, of fucking course! Not all of them are obsessed, there are shippers that truly care about Cas (or Dean). But if the majority continue buying the bs that tptb are selling, then this is going to be an endless path of pain and hate. Because you know why they post that board tainting the shippers? Because it works. Surely later they are going to call shippers delusional, and destiel doesn’t exist, and they are assholes for that. But when the waters calm down the shippers are going to come back for more. Sad but true.
We don’t know if Misha is coming back, nobody says anything, they are playing with that too the fuckers, and Misha, that surely is still under contract can`t say anything. Besides I don’t see Misha a la Mark S., been all wanker about it to be honest, he wouldn’t do that. I wish, oh how I wish, that Misha has a great project other than spn, and he could say fuck you to tptb. He deserves better from the show and from some fans too.
This got long and a mess and I’m sorry. I hope you get my point. Hugs anon!
