Plot Summary: Haven Allridge is a respected idealistic editor of a local paper, and after butting heads with the Sheriff, he knows he’s found a story of widespread corruption. He courageously uses his newspaper to call out the Sheriff, his cronies, the bookies... but suddenly Allridge leaves town, and it all stops. A state attorney named Chick Johnson takes up the case, trying to piece everything together. 

My Rating (out of five stars): ***¼  

Here we have another uncommon MGM crime noir. MGM was known for flashy splashy musicals, melodramas, adventures and family-fare. If any studio had the word “Glitz” attached to it, it was MGM. They didn’t attempt darker grittier films very often, and overall, this one was... somewhat successful. It had good performances, a great noir romance, a creative set up, and ominous intrigue. Its flaws appeared mostly when MGM gave it the “MGM treatment” near the end.  (some spoilers)

The Good: 

I liked the creativity of the opening credit sequence- it used pages of newspaper headlines to name those involved with the film. 

I liked Walter Pigeon- he was good as an older respectable figure who stands up for what he believes is right... until he is threatened. 

John Hodiak was effective as the State’s Attorney brought in to get indictments from a grand jury. We don’t learn a large amount about his character, but he does well with what is on the page. 

I loved Audrey Totter as Cleo, the femme fatale type. She was wise, hard-boiled, witty, and sexually empowered. 

I appreciated that the romance between Cleo and Johnson was adult and sophisticated. Their scenes were my favorite parts of the movie- they had great chemistry and sparkling banter. They communicated just as much without words as with them. I also liked that there was no traditional “happy ending" for the two of them. 

There was very little spoon-feeding of information to the audience. As a viewer you always had to stay on top of things to make it all make sense. 

I liked the shift in perspective from Allridge to Johnson. The first 20 minutes or so of the film could lead you to believe that Allridge is going to be the protagonist, but when he disappears, Johnson steps in. It was a more interesting way to start the film than to have Johnson’s perspective from the beginning. 

I kinda dig the MGM noir look- there's a slickness and cleanness to everything, even if it’s in a harsh and dark location. There’s always a mild gloss and some visually pretty aesthetics. It’s more noir as an artistic rendering than noir as documentary realism. 

The Bad: 

Even though I liked the look of the film, there were times I wished it could have gotten a little grittier... sweatier... etc. If a bit of the sheen were rubbed off, I wouldn't have minded.

There was nothing really earth shaking here- it wasn’t much different than the other noirs about corruption I’ve seen.  

The stakes were less high than in a lot of noirs, and the feeling of danger was less vivid and pronounced. 

Some of it was a little too predictable. Nothing genuinely surprised me. 

I loved Cleo, but in a scene where she was playing piano and singing at a club, the actress’ fingers were doing a comically bad job miming piano playing. She barely moved her hands! 

Unsurprisingly for MGM, the movie ended with an unambiguous win for the side of law and order. It was a little too simplistic and unrealistic for me. 

There was definitely some preachiness at the end. The judge in court closes with this: “The law- it's bigger than men, stronger than force. You can’t shoot it, you can’t bribe it, you can’t threaten it. Nobody, no person, no group, no gang... nobody in this country has ever been big enough to defy it for long, because the law is the united will of all people acting in concert.” In 2024 this would be pretty hard to swallow.

2017 Movie Odyssey

So ends the 2017 Movie Odyssey. Last year, I wrote that I did not foresee ever surpassing the 200+ movie mark for a long, long time. But look what happened here (outside of May because that was a hectic time in the Master’s program for sure). The 2017 Movie Odyssey consisted of 232 films - 180 feature-length films and fifty-two shorts. A century of filmmaking was covered this year, from 1917 to 2017. If I do have one regret this year... it’s that African films were not featured this year (due to availability issues and me not having enough money; I tend to watch things legally if possible). I hope to assuage that next year for a more representative Movie Odyssey.

For all of you out there who supported the Movie Odyssey in your own ways – whether reading, liking, commenting, or reblogging a write-up or sitting down with me to a new movie or talking to me about any movie... my thanks to all of you. None of this possible without you, and I hope you find that, through this blog, classic movies seem more approachable and welcoming and you are inspired to see some and learn about them yourself. A Happy New Year to all, and I’ll see you for the 2018 leg of the Movie Odyssey very soon (oh boy the Winter Olympics and World Cup are gonna chip away at the final count next year)!

As many know, all ratings are based on my imdb rating and half-points are always rounded down. My interpretation of that ratings system can be found here. A 6/10 is considered the borderline between “passing” and “failing”. Feature-length narrative films, short films, and documentaries are rated within their respective spectrums.
