Rizzoli and Isles is actually a show about a Queerplatonic Relationship.

Okay hear me out.

So, I always have shipped Rizzles. There are many MANY ways in which these are queer coded characters with a heavy romantic subtext, that a lot of the time honestly bleeds into the maintext. A lot of the actions and dialogue that we would typically interpret as romantic, especially between a hetero pairing, certainly works for this show. 

But I did a re-watch of the show recently, and while I still ship them romantically, I actually think what is being portrayed between them is something else. They are DEFINITELY more than friends; I mean they are life partners in every sense of the word. But the kind of dynamic that is CANONICALLY portrayed between Maura and Jane, is in fact, a Queerplatonic Relationship.

So here’s a working definition of the term for those who aren’t familiar with it: 

Queerplatonic relationships and queerplatonic partnerships are committed intimate relationships which are not romantic in nature. They may differ from usual close friendships by having more explicit commitment, validation, status, structure, and norms, similar to a conventional romantic relationship

I have actually experienced something like this, (and yes I’m going to get a bit anecdotally personal here; I’ll try not to be too long winded, but it’s relevant, I promise lol): 

I had an (unspoken) kind of relationship like this with my best friend in my early/mid 20s. We have been best friends since I was 11, but something definitely shifted when we became adults, and I have to say, I ended up, quite unexpectedly, being deeply in love with my best friend...platonically. I didn’t want to date her. I didn’t want to sleep with her. But, I was totally devoted to her and we were each other’s person for years. We were each other’s assumed plus one for everything, we regularly did dinner dates, we gave each other super sentimental cards and specialized gifts on birthdays, we also regularly did domestic shit together like grocery shopping, errands, chores, house projects; you name it, we had it/did it. I mean we were even each other’s phone background for a while lmao. We never lived together, but we had keys to each other’s places. 

Now a lot of this shit can happen and does happen in standard friendships (maybe not the phone background thing; that was super gay ngl hahaha), but the thing that made this different was the level of assumed partnership going on between us. And the...energy. We would stare deeply into each other’s eyes. We had that magnetic kind of magic with each other, like no matter where the other is in the room, we find our way back to each other. And people literally perceived us as a couple. Hell, my other friends teased us about it. 

Any of this sound familiar?

Oh and I DO find her to be attractive and even sexy. And we flirted (still do lolol) a LOT. 

But I didn’t ever really.....actually want to have sex with her. Not that I would’ve even necessarily been opposed to it, because we were so close, but it just, wasn’t ever a desire for me.

This was interesting to experience, because I do identify as a lesbian, I have been romantically attracted to people, sexually attracted to people, and the two, as society expects, do usually go hand in hand for me. But with her, I honestly could’ve seen forever; like being exactly as we were, as life partners, I could’ve even seen myself raising kids with her, and I would have been TOTALLY, GENUINELY content with it, ‘cause my relationship with her filled me up in a way nothing else has. This was confusing as all hell to me for a long time, because I didn’t have a name for this until recently when I learned about the concept of Queerplatonic Relationships which again supersede friendship and often are life partnerships, but aren’t inherently romantic or sexual, even though they are quite deep. I actually think QPRs speak to that “limitless” “otherwise undefinable” kind of relationship dynamic. 

Sooo - and I promise I’m wrapping my story up - when my bff met her current boyfriend, which is her first super serious adult relationship, I didn’t quite experience jealousy, I mean I always envisioned a romantic partnership for her, and I still want that for me! Buuuut...my feelings were complicated because it’s like...I had to mourn what I lost, as our dynamic inherently changed, and the fact that I wasn’t her person anymore. Weird thing to process indeed. Also *ahem* SOUND FAMILIAR?

Without getting too carried away here (oh who am I kidding, I already have 😂) for comparison’s sake, I actually went through a crazy ass heartbreak with someone, also while I was in my mid 20s; someone to whom I WAS romantically, sexually, spiritually, connected and attracted. I mean I was IN LOVE with this woman and she broke my heart by not fully reciprocating my feelings and not wanting to be with me. I thought I was gonna die when we stopped talking. Hell, it’s been years and I still think about her. 

But if you were to ask me who the true love. of. my. life. has been so far...I’d pick my best friend! 

The funny thing is I think a LOT of women end up in these kinds of dynamics, ESPECIALLY queer women, maybe even more so queer women who form super close relationships to “straight” women (gotta put str8 in quotes ‘cause...this shit is inherently queer even though it’s not romantic/sexual). You all know what I’m talking about; You’d do anything for each other, there’s chemistry, connection, and care, yet it doesn’t quite fit into any box you try to give it. People read you as a couple. You know this about yourselves, and you just...accept it. Because what you have is actually beyond any label. You know?

Anyway, I think there’s actually something cool and radical about this and I know that queer people want and deserve romantic and sexual representation, but I think this IS an accurate kind of representation that happens all the time that isn’t appropriately covered or discussed in media.

In hindsight, I think that’s what really hooked me on R&I. I mean, I started watching ‘cause I thought they were lesbians, and I kept watching ‘cause I thought it would be canon! And yeah, I still think about what could’ve been with them: fanfiction is good for that. But why do I still watch the actual show? Well...I LIVED it. 

Now: do I think that Maura and Jane often tip the scales a lil’ TOOOOO far in the explicitly gay direction on this show? Oh hell yes! Do I think you can interpret them as two people who are madly in love, romantically, with each other, yet are too scared to do anything about it? Oh hell yes! Like I said I do ship Rizzles. BUT, if I’m honest about what is FULLY, CANONICALLY being portrayed, no subtext, ALL maintext: It’s 10000% a QPR. 

So no: Maura Isles and Jane Rizzoli are certainly not JUST friends. They aren’t just colleagues, although their work relationship is just as powerful and awe inspiring as their personal one. They aren’t really like sisters, although they can quarrel like siblings at times. They aren’t truly romantic, although they are essentially life partners. They aren’t in a sexual relationship with each other; not that it couldn’t go there, but I also see how it wouldn’t need to go there, and how that doesn’t diminish the bond at all. They have something that I recognize -and something I think perhaps many of us recognize too- something beyond definition, because at the core of it they are true-blue soulmates who share a kind of unconditional love that is rarely found in ANY kind of relationship. If there is a definition that comes close to summing this kind of thing up: Queerplatonic Relationship is the answer!

I do! I respond to most of them now, because I like talking with my readers! I didn't do that at first... I was nervous that I might appear too desperate or something if I responded to everyone, but now I don't care 🤣 I love my readers and want them to know I see them.

6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

For now, I think that title belongs to Darkness in All Things. I wouldn't call it an angsty ending necessarily, but it's a bit more somber than most of my endings.

I think one of my one-shot WIPs may take this title (though I don't expect to finish it until early next year).

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I think all of my fics count as happy endings! The happiest might be Even Though You're Kryptonian, since our beloved idiots are preparing for their nuptials.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I've gotten a few from a known troll, but generally no. This fandom has been very kind 💗

9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?

I wrote smut once, for Darkness in All Things. There's another fic I'm writing smut for, although it's not supercorp.

In general, writing smut terrifies me. I only did it in DIAT because the characters held that chapter hostage until I did, and now the characters for this other fic are as well. I am being bullied 😭

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Okay... so... technically I have.

When I was young (10-ish?), I read some Sailor Moon fanfiction. I stumbled across this Sailor Moon & Xena crossover, and was frustrated that it had one chapter left and hadn't seen an update in a long time (I don't remember what a "long time" would've been to me back then).

I reached out to the author and asked about it, and the author gave me the chance to finish it based on their outline. So... I did, and they posted it!

I don't know how "well" it did. I think this was on ff.net in the very early days, so there were no kudos, and I don't think I ever got a comment about it.

I'd love to find that again, but haven't been able to. I remember nothing about it other than Rei was extremely snarky. I stopped reading Sailor Moon fanfic soon after, and generally didn't read fanfiction again until my 2021 obsession with Rizzles began.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I'm aware of.

I don't think I'll do it again. I'm far too chaotic in my writing approach, and far too possessive of my stories, to effectively cowrite with someone 🤣

14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?

Xena/Gabrielle!! They were my first ship. I never read fic of them (other than the Sailor Moon crossover I mentioned above, since I did read a lot of Sailor Moon fic). For me, their story was perfect, and the show gave us everything I could ever want.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

I don't think I have any of these at the moment. And I'd never say never anyway, you never know what a brain will latch onto.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I think I have some good plot ideas and decent characterization. But ultimately this question is up to the readers, not me.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I think my greatest weakness is not letting a scene evolve - I'm impatient by nature. I think this is something I'm slowly getting better at, in that my first fics are far less developed compared to my most recent fics.

But there's always a gap from the scene that's in my head vs. what ultimately makes it to the page. Sometimes I don't know if I've written enough for the readers to know what the characters are feeling and doing.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

Oh I'd get lots of help here.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Technically Xena and Sailor Moon in a crossover 🤣 That was a single chapter for someone else's story with someone else's outline over two decades ago. So I think saying Supercorp is still accurate.

20. Favourite fic you’ve ever written?

Oh gosh, it's hard to choose. I think I have a recency bias thing here where I want to say Darkness in All Things. I do think my writing style has improved greatly over time, so I think my stories have gotten better in that sense.

Hey Nix! Thank you so much for the message – when I first read it last night, it really did make me tear up and even this morning, still a little teary and it’s all still very, very much appreciated. Thank you, truly, for saying that – it was scary to be open about the mental health stuff, as I normally don’t go beyond the ‘I have mental illness/am neurodivergent’ mention. 5. How many WIPs do you have? What fandoms/pairings are they for? I currently have 9 in progress. They are JaySteph, Cha'an, Sa'Rina, Monsam, Bishlova, Rizzles, Clashildr & Thasmin, and Una x Marie. Some are very close to being finished, and others are still 20 chapters off completion.

10. Do you work on multiple WIPs or stick to one fic at a time? I usually like to stick to one thing at a time, but lately I've been writing down whatever comes to mind. NaNoWriMo was pretty stressful this year and I got the words down on whatever I could. I went into NaNo with 2 WIPs and finished the month with 9.

22. Do you title your fics before, during, or after the writing process? How do you come up with titles? It really depends on the fic. Sometimes I think of a title and write a fic that fits with it and other times I sit here scratching my head trying to pick something out of the story that could work for the title. I sometimes will also use a song lyric for the title if the song plays while I'm writing.

30. How much do you edit your fics? Do you edit as you write or wait until you finish the first draft? I will read over them when I'm done and add in anything I missed. I'll then get Skylarkblue, my lovely beta and best friend, to go over it, and then edit again if needed.

chapter 1

“Have you ever considered therapy?”

“Pff,” she flicks a hand dismissively, the one whose elbow is propped on the back of her chair. “If I’m gonna be a cop, I can’t go cryin’ to a shrink every time something stressful happens.”

Ms Patterson’s overplucked brows rise a little, and Jane knows immediately that she’s chosen the wrong tactic to use on her guidance counselor.

Oldschool veteran fortitude is a dumb look on a kid who’s been 20 for a whole month. She’s come off instead as a judgmental little shit, too big for her britches.

“Actually, Jane, people in law enforcement aren’t above needing to take care of their mental health. In fact, they’re some that need to the most. And if that’s the attitude you intend to impress potential employers with, I can promise you, it’ll get you passed over faster than you can blink.”

Jane straightens up in her chair, getting humble. It’s a speech that lasts several minutes, and she’s earned it. She knew better. Or should've.

Really, she does have to get her attitude under control. The hard-shelled sarcastic smartass thing worked fine socially as a teenager, but in the real world, it’s going to hold her back.

She’ll need Ms Patterson as a reference before long, so it’s in her best interest to demonstrate some growth.

So, here she is. Wasting her only night off at some stupid support group.

Ok, it’s not stupid. Not for the people who need it. She doesn’t. Not in an above-it way; her life just isn’t that bad.

Everyone else here has shared truly awful stories so far, and any one of them would probably trade lives with her in an instant. She fidgets with the hem of her lucky jersey, ashamed to be here over nothing.

As soon as she absorbs enough to be able to fake an epiphany that’ll satisfy Ms Patterson, she’s outta here.

The talkative people have talked, and now the guy in charge is looking to see if one of the quiet ones want to share. He picks a blonde about Jane’s age, pretty and very well-dressed.

Jane is a little relieved at the sight of her, because maybe her problems aren't the most trivial in the room after all. She braces herself for a tragic tale like ‘Daddy bought the wrong color Bentley for my birthday’.

The girl looks positively terrified to have been chosen. Her name is Laura - maybe? The few quiet words she’ll say are addressed to her own lap, and the only ones Jane catches are "nothing really" and “benign neglect”.

She looks like she might have a nervous breakdown if spoken to any more, and the guy gives up.

Next, everybody is told to pair off, and that's the final straw for Jane.

She glances over in time to see that girl tighten around her purse and eye the door like she's going to bolt. And the second everybody starts murmuring and milling around, she does.

Both curious and eager for the opportunity to bail, Jane follows her into the hall.

"Hey?"

Laura whirls around, looking scared like maybe Jane has chased her out to scold her.

"I-I'm sorry, I should've excused myself, I didn't want to be disrup-"

"Relax, I'm ducking out too," Jane smiles, flashing her palms.

"Oh," the blonde flashes a mechanically polite smile, and they continue down the hall toward the double exit doors, almost side by side.

Jane's been practicing making quick connections with people. Connections get people on her side, make them open up, say what they know. A good detective would have to be good at that, and she likes the idea of honing those skills early.

She challenges herself to win over this nervous stranger before they go their separate ways into the night.

"I think there's enough of 'em that they won't miss us," she adds, smiling conspiratorially. It doesn't work, maybe because the other girl is looking at the floor.

She outpaces her at the end of the hallway, wanting to be the one to open the door. The clack of the push bar echoes loudly, and she puts her weight against the heavy door, holding it open.

Something hard to read flickers across the girl’s face. Jane watches the top of her head pass at eye level, preparing one last try.

“If anybody ask-”

Barely through the threshold, the blonde turns around suddenly, blurting “Why?”, causing Jane to stop short, both verbally and physically, and get clipped by the closing door.

“Why what?” she asks, amused.

“Sorry.” Laura backs up and shuts her eyes hard for a second, clearly scolding herself internally. “I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay, why what?”

“Why are you.. ducking.”

"Eh. What I came here about is a trip to Disney World compared to some of that stuff,” she says, nodding over her shoulder. “Feels wrong to put my problems alongside theirs."

"I felt the same,” the girl glances up a bit more brightly. “Like I was intruding."

Jane lets her feel sure she’s about to ask about her past, and then asks something else.

She likes to pinpoint the change in peoples’ faces when she does that. Don’t ask turning into why didn’t you ask is immediate and almost always an eyebrow thing. I could tell you if you asked is a separate stage that takes a little more work, and you have to watch the broader body language for it.

In this girl’s case, it’s in the way she rotates to face Jane more directly as they stand outside, keys in hand, chatting somewhat one-sidedly.

It's Maura, with an M. Actually, she seems like a nice girl who’s painfully shy, but trying hard to put herself out there. It makes Jane want her to succeed.

Their chat finds a lull, and Jane is disappointed at the prospect of them parting ways just yet.

So she points across the street and says how about they go get a quick cup of coffee instead of standing around a dark parking lot? And she swears Maura thinks about bolting again before nodding yes.

They slide into a well-worn booth and Maura asks and Jane hits the highlights of her tale: Pop's drinking, the fighting, the divorce. Becoming a de facto mother and head of household at 13 because Ma had to work every waking moment just to keep a roof over their heads. How she's arrived at 20 feeling robbed of the teen years that are apparently supposed to be so golden.

Finding out Maura's deal is not as easy. Although she follows Jane's story with genuine compassion, when the time comes that she should naturally volunteer something about herself in return, she just stares at her cup.

“You readin’ those tea leaves, or?”

“No,” Maura answers with no inkling that this was a joke. “There aren’t any.”

She slides the cup forward, meaning to show Jane, and the momentum makes a little tea slosh out, soaking into Jane’s white shirt sleeve.

“Ohno,” she whispers, scrambling for a napkin and dabbing at the stain with shaking hands. “I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry-”

“It’s fine,” Jane laughs, but Maura looks like she’s on the verge of panic. “Seriously, don’t worry about it.”

“I ruined your shirt...”

“This? It’s an improvement. Here,” she picks up her own cup, dribbling some coffee along her other sleeve. “Maybe I can get kind of a tie-dye thing going on. Whaddya think?”

Maura gapes like she has no precedent in the entire world for how to react to this. At a loss, she slowly comes around to following Jane’s cue, and arrives at an uncertain laugh. Jane considers it a win.

“What brought you out here tonight?” she asks while the mood is still fresh.

Maura smiles nervously at her fingernails. “My problems don’t belong alongside yours, either.”

Jane feels a pang of guilt that her first reaction to Maura was the exact one she was afraid of.

“I bet they do.”

Practicing her interrogation skill is no longer why Jane wants to talk to this girl, but sitting across a table and working hard for clipped answers, that's kind of how it feels.

Maura talks in tight little summaries, like she’s getting scored on brevity.

Eventually, she gets enough to piece together a profile: 19 year old BCU student; an adopted only child; her parents are very self-involved career people; the independence they meant to instill in her is really just crippling perfectionism and social anxiety.

“They would’ve cared. The group,” she says. “I care, and I was probably the biggest jerk in there. Your problems don't have to be the most horrible for you to deserve to talk about ‘em."

Maura smiles, glancing up only momentarily.

"Thank y- I mean. You too- What? You don’t seem like a jerk."

Jane smirks, sipping the last of her coffee. “Only ‘cause you don’t know me.”

A silence passes. She tries to identify the song barely audible on the radio.

One perfectly-arched caramel eyebrow has a thin scar beneath it, and Jane wonders if there's trauma behind that, and if she's self conscious about it. She shouldn't be. She's pretty.

"You gonna go back next week?"

Maura hesitates, looking out the window. "Are you?"

That’s another win. Jane's grin goes unseen.

"Only if it was just this part. We could be our own really exclusive support group… for people with medium-size problems."

It's designed to get a smile, but it doesn't really. Maura’s hesitation lasts longer this time, and Jane is about to end her misery when she spits out a "Yes" that sounds awfully forced.

“Same bat time, same bat channel?”

Maura goes blank.

Jane tries again. "Here, next week? Sevenish?" and this time gets a nod. She taps her knuckles softly on the table. "Cool."

She doesn't suggest exchanging numbers. There's a ninety percent chance this girl was just avoiding the confrontation of saying no. She'll let her flake in peace.

Personality: With strangers she’s a bit hotheaded and quick to anger/get annoyed, especially if pushed to try and open up. She’s not afraid to let ya know that ya piss her off or what she thinks about you. With those she knows well and family she’s more open and parental. She’ll joke and be playful, especially when it comes to kids. She still expects to be respected though, which is why Toby will never mentions the “Miss Rizzle” nickname to her.

Bio:

Irizhia is only one of a few remaining creatures known as The Amalgam. Their so few that they’re in the single digits. She’s the appointed leader of them and protects her adopted siblings as fiercely as all those who have come to her for safety.

She has a settlement deep in the Arcadia woods where a number of defected changlings and children, troll, human, and Changling alike all live alongside here. Their home is protected and hidden by a powerful magic barrier. Most refer to the place as “Eden”.

She and those under her keep close eyes on the goings on in both TrollMarket and the Janice Order for their own safety and interfere only when absolutely necessary and always in disguise.

Trollhunter Irizhia (oh yeah Kanjigar lives too)

Irizhia is taking her adopted son Jim out for tracking practice when they stumble upon the stone statue of Trollhunter Kanjigar lying under a tree.

She comes to the conclusion he’s been afflicted with Creeper’s Sun poison and, with some begging for her to help him from Jim, takes Kanjigar back to the settlement to administer the cure before taking a dazed and delirious troll back to TrollMarket.

He moments of kindness backfire as the amulet, thinking Kanjigar dead, now chose her as the Trollhunter and she’s NOT happy about it.

Instead of having Kanjigar as her ghost Mentor I thought it’d be fun to throw a certain descendant of Blinky’s at her since their personalities are very different.

Araknak annoys the hell out of her lol. So optimistic and carefree and touchy, ewww! And he’s trying to be her friend so hard, double eww.

She’s fighting to keep her truth hidden but something has to give. Here’s hoping TrollMarket stays in one piece.

TrollSon AU

Irizhia finds and rescues a 7-year-old Jim from a horde of vengeful goblins and carries him back to TrollMarket, only to be stalked and charged at by Bular looking for a meal. It soon ends up with Bular, Stricklander, and Nomura verses Irizhia and Kanjigar in the canal.

Irizhia takes a blow for Kanjigar and is dragged into TrollMarket for safety and treatment. Now she has to keep her cool while tending to her blinded eyes while they heal.

Doesn’t help with the Trollhunter, Blinkous, and Vendal constantly grilling her about her use of highly dangerous and unstable Dragon Fire Opal and how she learned to use it so masterfully. Not to mention the sweet little human boy who’s asking her questions as well.

If she doesn’t wind up ripping someone’s head off by the end of the day, she’ll be surprised.

As you sat in the middle of your apartment, wallowing in the grief of losing one of the most important people in your life to suicide, the three cats you and your fiance had brought together snuggled up around your feet, knowing that there was something off with you, whilst your new kitten, a ten-week-old stray who had wandered into your apartment the morning before you couldn't help but feel a little calmer. There's a knock on your front door and when you realise that someone is trying to see you, you call out

“It's open”. The next thing you know Alice is sitting beside you, pulling you close to her side and wrapping her arms around you. Your three cats all look up at the slight disturbance before closing their eyes and ignoring your best friend, but when your kitten, a little boy you had decided to name Thackery, looks up at Alice and starts to give off a little hiss, Alice looks down at the small feline and raises an eyebrow

“Maybe your New Years resolution should be to not get another 20 cats...?” she suggests and you pick up the small kitten and pat him as you place a kiss on his cheek

“Little Thackery was a stray that appeared on my doorstep yesterday morning, I couldn't just leave him alone. I checked with all my neighbours and all the people around the neighbourhood to see if he was there and no one laid claim to him so I have. Besides, these three have already claimed him as one of there's” you say as you let he go and he traipses down your legs towards the oldest cat you had Benny, and when Benny looks up and nuzzles the small kitten you can't help but smile, as I that proved your point. Alice just sighs before she sees how happy your cats are making you, and how they are helping your through this time of hurt and grief.

Maybe start with Red Wood, then go to Zyon, Canyonlands National Park, visit those giant rocks in the Arizona desert (grand canyon too), Yellowstone. Then I would go to europe specially to Ireland and some other places where i can look at rocks. Being more national, i would like to visit all of my country, each state has something beautiful that makes them unique❤

As the autumn of 2012 dawned, six months had elapsed since Olly had last released a single in the UK – the longest such gap since his debut. Recording his third album was part of this, but the other reason was one we touched upon briefly before and will be exploring more in both this entry and in the ones to come. After a successful band or solo artist has achieved a substantial amount of success on home turf and in immediate surrounding territories as he had, it’s not usually unreasonable to try having a crack at what so many have attempted to become a success in, yet so few have achieved the elusive dream of - breaking the American market.

It’s not unfair to say that Olly had a struggle and then some to begin with. At his performance at the BRITs in February, some bigwig execs from Columbia, a subsidiary of Sony Music who Olly was signed to under Epic, were sat in the audience. They were impressed with what they saw, so much that his first Stateside deal was offered – but with a few caveats to address. Even though the US version of The X Factor had been on air for a year on Fox Network, his success as a result of the original UK series meant diddle squat there.

Fortunately, the timing was good. The early 2010s were something of a purple patch where British artists in America were concerned. Adele and Florence & The Machine had been resounding successes, Tinie Tempah was giving the US hip hop giants a run for their money. The Saturdays filmed a reality show for the E! network and had some success on dance charts. Hell, even the hopeless likes of The Wanted had a Billboard top 10 hit with their UK chart topper ‘Glad You Came’. But all of them were eclipsed by the gargantuan success of a boyband who shared something in common with Olly – chiefly, where they first came to attention.

Bronze finalists on the 2010 UK series of The X Factor, One Direction had already topped the charts with their debut ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ upon its September 2011 release in the UK, setting all manner of sales records in the process. Its success was quickly replicated across the pond, as a generation of Twitter trending uber fans who’d discovered them on the aforementioned social networking site and YouTube all started shrieking for mankind about a new British invasion. Columbia had signed One Direction in the US, and after seeing Olly perform at the BRITs, decided to put two and two together and have him support them on their first American tour that summer.

This initial attempt to make him known to a US audience was one met with nervous doubt by his audience back home, worried that Olly was on the verge of being made untouchable and inaccessible like they had become and lose the very British charm that had made him so appealing in the first place in order to make him more commercially palatable Stateside. The worries weren’t confounded any less when a radically different mix of ‘Heart Skips A Beat’ was chosen as his debut release in North America, ditching Rizzle Kicks from the original version in favour of obscure, buck toothed rapper Chiddy Bang. It was poorly received by fans on both sides of the pond, and also by an incensed Rizzle Kicks, who rightly called out Sony in the press for the botched A&R decision. The fact that the remixed single bombed out at #96 in the Billboard charts, even after two separate promo videos (one at a soccer match, the other on Venice Beach) and lacklustre radio play tells its own story.

When Olly returned home to continue recording and writing his third album in July that year, he was back working with Claude and Steve again, this time on a funk laden slice of pop about a wrong doing woman who proved irresistible. There was never any doubt that the driving disco funk pop of ‘Troublemaker’ had the potential to be a hit that would take him worldwide, but it needed an extra sparkle of magic to make it really take off. That sparkle came in the form of bechesticled US rapper Tramar Dillard, better known as Flo Rida. After all, he’d made more than his fair share of trips to the top of both the US and UK charts in recent years by the time he was approached, and had also guested on UK hit singles for The Saturdays and Alexandra Burke. Not for the first time in Olly’s career, however, the guest feature didn’t extend to the video for the song directed by Michael Baldwin, with Flo Rida’s part shot separately to his in Miami, bouncing car and all, whilst Olly hoofed it up pursuing and eventually hooking up with a hot girl around downtown Los Angeles who finds herself repeatedly fired from a series of jobs. At least it wasn’t the obvious choice of treatment for a song called ‘Troublemaker’. But again, showcasing an iconic look – the same long-sleeved granddad tee and braces he was rocking on the cover for the single’s parent album – cemented its imagery and his audience grew again.

Thankfully, those expecting more Chiddy Bang style buffoonery upon the single’s first radio play at the beginning of October – just as Olly began a national book signings tour in support of his illustrated autobiography ‘Happy Days’ – were breathing a sigh of relief when they heard the final version. Far from selling out, it was a stormer of a pop song up there with his best moments. A comfortable six weeks of solid airplay on TV and radio ahead of its mid-November release saw to it that, even with a chart battle against a returning Girls Aloud, who were marking their 10th anniversary with a new greatest hits album and that year’s BBC Children In Need single ‘Something New’, that Olly would achieve not only his biggest first week sales for a single – 125k are agreed to be the final number – on its way to sales of over three quarters of a million in the UK alone, but that he would also enjoy his first UK chart topper to spend more than a week at the top – his second week’s competition coming from Bruno Mars, whose ‘Locked Out Of Heaven’ had to settle for a #2 debut.

But crucially, ‘Troublemaker’ also did what the disastrous remix of ‘Heart Skips…’ had failed to do. It finally established him as the next UK success story in America, eventually reaching as high as the top 30 of the Billboard charts the following March, and shifting over one million copies in the process, as well as becoming a top 5 or top 10 hit in fourteen other countries. More nods at the following years BRITs and Ivor Novellos ceremonies confirmed just what a success the single had been for Olly. It had given him the freedom to becoming the international superstar he had dreamed of becoming on that audition stage all those years ago, whilst much like Take That before him, ensuring that he’d never forget where he was coming from.

OTHER THOUGHTS

The CD single came backed with a just about passable remix from dance DJs Cutmore, whilst the digital bundle boasted an additional reswizzle from UK garage gods Wideboys, famed for their 2001 top 20 hit ‘Sambuca’ with Dennis G. A rare version of ‘Troublemaker’ also exists in the ether with no feature from Flo Rida included – an additional verse from Olly appears in the place of his rap instead. This was done to cater for the audiences of national British stations like BBC Radio 2 and Heart, who were a little less inclined towards rap artists. The trick seemed to work, as it helped the single to top the UK radio airplay chart for several weeks at the end of 2012. Olly still performs this version live now in Flo Rida’s perpetual absence.

Help Me Help You by HermioneWinchester21 - M, 20 Chapters - AU. Set in Victorian England, Hermione’s reputation has taken a substantial blow. A damaging and false rumor has spread that Hermione did more than provide information to Harry during the battle with Tom Riddle. oh my gosh your rizzles reblogs are killing me rn. i miss them but hate to b/c of all that tnt tomfoolery. when will we have another female led show where the two main characters have amazing chemistry like that. hopefully with their attraction as canon AND better writing.

@jobethdalloway and i were sorta discussing this the other day. yes, there are other great female led shows (supergirl comes to mind atm) but nothing that captures that sort of chemistry (alex is canon lesbian in the show and is exploring relationships) that Rizzoli and Isles had for me being part of a fandom.

I say this because I am a huge lover of subtext. I love the complexity of it and how it is left to the viewer to fill in the blanks (see: my undying love for Xena) but also, like Jo and I were discussing, it allows for SO MUCH creativity and imagination. And I have yet to find a new fandom to invest that into like I did with Rizzles.

I hold out hope that the Xena reboot will find its way out of production hell and be something amazing for a whole new audience (and old fans like myself) that will explore that subtext and maintext in a way that wasn’t allowed 20 years ago.

Fingers crossed we get something soon.

Day 20: Honor – King Liam x MC

You sat with Liam as the two of you decided on who would have the honour of being named Godparents for your newborn baby. As you looked down at the beautiful bundle in your arms, your little girl, your princess you already knew who you wanted it to be. You look over at Liam and say to him

“I think we should give the honour of God Mother to Olivia, she's fiercely loyal and protective and she will treasure our little girl if anything was to happen to us like she was her own, just like your family did for her”. You watch Liam think through your reasoning and he nods

“I think I agree with you, besides there are somethings that we might not be able to teach her that she can surely rectify” he says and you nod. You trace your finger along her cheek and she nuzzles into the contact

“And what of a Godfather?” Liam asks and you think it through

“What about Drake? I mean he's your best friend, he's proved to be absolutely loyal to the both of us and you can't deny that he's got away with kids” you say and he chuckles

“Yeah. Can you imagine the fighting between Olivia and Drake about what is best for the princess of Cordonia?” he chuckles and you can't help but giggle at the thought.

“Oh yes, now it definitely has to be the two of them” you say and he chuckles

“Alright then, we'll have the two of them come in and hear the good news. Are we sure that Hana and Maxwell won't be too crushed?” he asks and you nod

“I'm sure that the two of them will be more than happy to be honorary aunty and uncle of our little princess” you say and he nods.

Liam goes to retrieve Drake and Olivia and gives you a moment alone with your daughter, little Violet Avery of Cordonia, Princess of Cordonia.

“Hi sweet angel, we can't wait for you to meet everyone, but first you're going to get to meet your godparents. Drake and Olivia, you're going to love both of them so much, they will always have your back no matter what and will truly be the greatest people if anything was to happen to your daddy and me” you say and you watch as your daughter opens her eyes and gives a little stretch before she yawns and closes her eyes again. You lean down and place a kiss on her forehead just as the doors open and Liam enters with Olivia and Drake trailing in behind him. As Olivia and Drake come to stand on either side of the bed they both gush over your little princess and they both eagerly wait to hear her name, you look to Liam to do the honours and when he looks over at the two saying

“Guys, we'd like you to meet your goddaughter Violet Avery”, you watch as the two of them gush over the name and then Drake realises what Liam has just told them

“Wait! Godparents?” he asks and you nod

“Yeah we want you and Olivia to be Violet's god parents, if anything happens to us then we want the two of you to be the ones to look after our precious angel” you explain and you watch as their jaws drop. You chuckle, giving them a couple of minutes before the two of them smile and accept the position, asking for cuddles with the new princess and you smile

“Of course,” you say and hand your daughter over to Olivia who has a massive smile on her face, whilst Drake stands behind her and watches over his new goddaughter.
