Ascendant in Aries. Aries Rising
The ascendant is the highest point 1 of the Natal chart house, showing the energy that a person translates into the surrounding world and accumulates during life with the support of the Sun and moon. The ascendant in Aries demonstrates fiery pressure and stunning charisma, manifested in communication and professional preferences. Nativ is born quickly and rapidly, often ahead of time or the mother does not have time to get to the hospital. He is a fighter and a leader who understands from childhood how to win leading positions in the business he is interested in. Impetuous and passionate, honest to directness, he can not stand the weakness and passivity of other people, so they are perceived as rude and daring, despite the fact that he works tirelessly to achieve goals. Nativ is always turned to the world by a strong side that hides a true and loving heart. The affected ascendant in Aries narrows the perception of the world, forcing stupidly to move forward, breaking the walls, instead of bypass maneuvers.Â
Appearance and demeanorÂ
The appearance of the owner of the ascendant in Aries is influenced by the planet-ruler Mars, which gives the face sharp features with an outstanding forward element, as a rule, it is the nose, chin or even a rebellious tuft of bangs. Distinctive external features of the native:Â
1.Bushy eyebrows without bending, chestnut-red hair ( men have early baldness due to excess testosterone);Â
2.Low growth, prominent eagle nose, strong lip line;Â
3.Brown-green, nutty, yellowish-tiger color of widely spaced eyes;Â
4.Bright blush (especially at the time of excitement), marks on the face or head, moles or scars.Â
Nativ talks loudly, taking the initiative in the conversation, interrupting the interlocutor and imposing his point of view. Watching without blinking, the look predatory. Movements are jerky and impulsive, causing a desire to remove him from breakable objects away. In clothes prefers bright colors that attract the attention of the public: red, yellow, gold, orange, as well as sports style for everyday appearance and luxurious and glamorous for the evening out.Â
Rising sign in Aries womanÂ
Ascendant in Aries in a female Natal chart creates spirited and passionate Amazon thermasource to independence and equality. She was born to Shine and rule, with the first meeting placing the emphasis of leadership. Not possessing classical beauty, is unusually attractive and sexy, despite rigidity and roughness of behavior for which it is often called "the man in a skirt". The owner of the ascendant in Aries has an energetic strident gait, her eyes radiate a radiance of confidence. The male fiery energy of Mars makes it a successful leader or political leader, but does not make it easy to build female happiness. She is attracted to partners of opposite signs of Aries, for example, Libra, capable of singing praises and deifying the beloved. Admiration for one's own person can ignite love even in someone who aroused hostility. A strong man will not stay close to a Martian, will not withstand the constant fire of competition, but a soft and romantic companion will balance her temperament. For a woman with an ascendant in Aries, it is important to feel that she seduced the object of passion, and he surrendered to the pressure.
The rising sign in Aries in a manÂ
Is an Energetic and strong-willed leader, unrestrainedly brave and sporty, imperious leader of his own business. He feels himself the master of life, confidently accepting its benefits. In love â a gallant knight, seeking the attention of the lady you like, despite any obstacles. Such attention flatters the chosen one, but it is worth considering that easy prey does not appeal to the fiery nature of the hunter-Martian. He will not be attracted by the cold arrogant beauty, the ideal will be romantic, cheerful and principled person, brave and athletic. He loves to seek and chase, and later a scene of jealousy with the smashing of crockery about the walls and public scandals may become a usual thing, especially with a low level of spirituality of the individual. In the profession he is hardworking, responsible, inventive and far-sighted. Despite the temper, forgiving, and easily forgives the offense. Since the native has a huge supply of energy, he needs to dump the excess, doing sports or physical labor. In household terms of highly modest, capable costs small and undemanding in food.Â
Professions for the ascendant in Aries
The Ascending sign shows how a person expresses a social role, being in sight, contacting with other people. Therefore, the ascendant must be considered when choosing a profession. Ascending Aries are able to succeed wherever they like. In addition to the highest efficiency and care for the weak and disadvantaged people, they are responsible and fair. Karmic task is easiest to implement in leadership positions. Success will come in areas related to risk, fire, technology: military and fire services, space, intelligence, aviation, surgery. Extreme sports can be not only a hobby, but also a job: racing, hockey, bobsleigh. Among people with an Ascendant in Aries, there are also many singers, actors and Directors, as well as billionaires who manage huge corporations, for example, John Rockefeller.Â

Off to Rust! (Adrigami fanfic)
Chapter 5

The fencing group stood inside the house, where they waited for the train, that is inspired by the Swiss descendant bobsleigh sports and observed a blue-colored train with the word Germany on its back tax out of the house making a curve to the right side disappearing from their sight.
âIâm probably just overthinking, but isnât it possible for the train to slip out of the slide as soon as it leaves the railway?â The Japanese descendant girl asked the group.
âDonât worry, it just looks like it is like that, but it isnâtâ Mohamed assured, who stood a row behind with his brother glancing at Kagami, who was paired up with Adrien for the ride.
âThe only thing I would be worried about if you would share the wagon with someone heavier than you and that person would sit in front of you,â Etienne mentioned making Laura laugh.
âI donât think someone would actually want to squeeze you during the ride, Etienne,â Eveline stated exchanging looks with the tan-skinned girl.
âIf I look at all of us I donât think our weight is going to bother each other during the ride,â Adrien mentioned. âThe only thing is I, Amir and Mohamed are the tallest of us all and would block the sight if we sat in frontâ
âExcept we two will be a problem, broâ Amir added making the brother nod.
The next train entered the station with visitors sitting inside it, then they lifted up the safety bar as soon as it got unlocked and climbed out of the wagons so that the next persons could get into the train. Adrien entered into the wagon taking a seat, then looked up at Kagami, which looked at the blonde little bewildered.
âIt doesnât really mind you if I sit in front of you?â The blue-haired girl asked making Adrien shake his head.
âNo, Iâm fine with itâ The French boy answered. âUnless you prefer it otherwise, but then you wouldnât see because of meâ
âYou know, I just donât want to hurt you,â Kagami said.
âYou wonât hurt me, Kagami, donât worryâ Adrien mentioned then Kagami held with her hands the safety bar to sit down on, then shrieked as she pushed the bar down behind her landing with her butt on Adrienâs lap making him yelp.
âS...sorry,â Kagami apologized lifting her rear up and watch Adrien put both of his legs aside.
âIâm fine,â Adrien said with clenched teeth from the fall from Kagami on him, then she watched Adrien place his hands beside her belly assisting her in taking place in front of him on the great seat of the wagon. Kagami pulled the safety bar down at her and Adrien, then looked back at Adrien, noting both were very close to each other on the wagon. Adrien smiled at the friend, then she looked forward smiling while turning slightly red due to her love interest in the boy. Kagami placed her hands on the safety bar, then looked up at the wagon in front of her, where the twins sat and one of the boys had lifted the smartphone up filming the two behind them and Kagami waved along with Adrien at the brunette boy, thereafter the Japanese girl placed her hands back on the bar along with Adrien, which placed them over hers and wide his eyes as he did that and Kagami rolled her eyes up at the blonde, which gazed at her and grinned a little embarrassed and Kagami leaned back on Adrienâs chest with hers and Adrien held his hands next to Kagamiâs hands on the safety bar, then both rolled their eyes at the staff member, that came to check if the bars got locked successfully.
âHey as we came from the other rollercoaster I saw a stand, where you could win a huge dog plush by throwing a basketball into the netâ Adrien mentioned. âAre you interested to try it out with me?â
âIâm not good in basketball,â Kagami mentioned, then she looked forward as the train started rolling and turned right as it left the station entering into another wooden-made house, where the rail went upwards leaving on the other side throughout the arc of the shack, soon both closed their eyes as the sun shined at their eyes.
âI can see the Can Can coaster from hereâ Eveline pointed out from the wagon at the large ball, they saw from the railway.
âWeâre almost on the top of the rideâ Adrien mentioned as the front wagon of the train, where a woman sat with a younger child. The train arrived at the top and the railway was attached to a white metal-made furrow, therefore the train taxed into there, rolling there on the track passing by a couple of trees, that stood outside of the with its branches holding parakeet green leaves all over the arms.
âThere we go,â Adrien said with the chuckle as they approached a bend, where the track goes downhill and upwards again, then Adrien placed his arms in the air along with the other passengers and cheered as it went down.
âWeeeee!â The passengers yelled, then entered into a curve, followed by more.
âOh gosh, I almost thought the front was about to fly out of the trackâ Kagami mentioned glancing at Adrien, which nodded.
âThat actually was a little freakyâ The blonde admitted holding tight on Kagamiâs with his arms around her, making the girl blush and place her right hand over his. The train passed through a longer cottage, followed by a row of trees beside the track almost building a tunnel over them with the leaves of the tree and the piste for their ride was now straight and their train had got connected back to the normal rail of the roller coaster, that went further.
âAre we in the end?â Kagami asked watching the way the train kept rolling.
âMaybe, I donât remember seeing a lot from this roller coaster beside the curvesâ Answered the blonde watching Kagami shrug her shoulders. âBut I actually liked it. Just before as you thought the wagons were going to fall out it made me feel a little anxious,â
âSorry, it just looked like it was about toâ
âI believe you,â Adrien said with a chuckle, then heard his stomach growl, signalizing the boy, that he was hungry. âI think we should look for a place to eat. I havenât eaten anything since my dinner last nightâ
âNeither did Iâ Kagami noted. âI had rice salad yesterday night onlyâ
âI had meatloaf cordon bleu,â Adrien responded. âNathalie said it was supposed to be the regular one, but asked me if it was okay to have this variant instead because the expire date was due to todayâ
âGood ideaâ
âYou sort of eat a little too healthy and light. Arenât you ever hungry, when you go to bed or something?â
âSometimes, but this time I didnât have breakfast, so Iâm probably as hungry as you, but I satisfied my hunger for a bit with the waterâ
âOh yeah, that helpsâ Adrien mentioned followed by his stomach growl louder. âGees Iâm so hungry I could eat a horseâ
âIn France you eat horse?â Kagami asked with eyes wide open, then Adrien shook his head.
âNo, thatâs just a saying. We donât really eat horse meat thereâ
âOhâ
The train entered the station, where the guests where waiting and stopped, unlocking the safety bars so that the passengers could get out of the train and leave through the exit.
âZeynep, what kind of food locals does the park have?â Adrien asked looking back at the Turkish girl.
âWe need to look it up in the mapâ The tan-skinned girl mentioned, then as they were out of the building the girl stopped, opening the map to look up for any food locals.
âHey if you all donât mind. I saw there before a stand, where you could win big plush dogs, is anyone interested to try their luck?â Adrien suggested the group, then Etienne raised his arm along with Eveline.
âI could win one for my little sister,â Etienne told the blonde, who smiled at the brunette.
âThen let's try it out,â Adrien said watching Eveline and Etienne walk in front of him, then Adrien looked at Kagami, which was drinking water from a small thermos bottle afterward she put the bottle back inside her jacket and noted Adrien standing there with her. âAre you coming with us to the stand?â
âOkayâ Kagami answered walking along with Adrien behind the shorter fencing students, which made their way to a large stand with large, different colored dog plushes hanging all over the stand and a man standing inside the stand watching a man throw a basketball into the stand hitting the wall and landing beside the rim of the basket and landing on the ramp under the backboard rolling down at the space, where the guard of the stand was.
âBad luck, weâre going to make it, right?â Etienne asked looking at the group, that nodded.
âWell, it looks a little hard thoughtâ Kagami mentioned seeing the short distance between the basket and the front of the stand.
âAt the school, I rarely managed to score in the basket, but I feel like here itâs easier to hit it, that at the school,â Eveline said approaching the stand along with her group mates.
âWelcome me mates. One hit, you win. 3 euros one ball, 5 euros 2 and 8 euros are 3 balls. Try your luckâ The foreigner descendant man said showing the kids the prices and placing a basketball he picked up from the ground on the stand in front of them.
âDo you want to try it out Eveline?â Etienne asked looking at the blonde girl.
âIâm not great at scoring, do youâ Eveline responded watching Etienne take a five euro bill from his pocket.
âCome I offer you one tryâ Etienne offered the girl.
Adrien took out from his a ten euro bill, then observed Kagami look at the nets from the basket, which were very long and reached down along the ramp to the ground from where the man from the stand was, then looked the whole thing up again and sniggered shortly.
âI think the nets are this long, so the man can not be tricked out by the guestsâ Kagami mentioned earning a nod from the blonde.
âHave you got two five euro bills?â Questioned Adrien. âI only have ten and upâ
âI donât knowâ Responded Kagami taking from her jacketâs pocket a white wallet and opened it to see she didnât have them, then opened a smaller pocket inside the wallet to find a couple of euro and cent coins inside and the girl turned her pocket around to let the coins fall on her hand, then she counted them all, then held her hand closer to the blonde.
âThere are 3.59 onlyâ Kagami told the tall boy.
âOkay I take it and I buy for us two, two tries to hit the basketâ Adrien offered. âItâs alright like thatâ
âI give my bestâ Kagami promised making Adrien smile.
âAnd if you fail donât worry, we wonât judge you like your mother wouldâ Adrien mentioned making the blue-haired girl roll her eyes amused at the blondeâs comment.
âI donât think my mother would let me spend my money on a game like thisâ Kagami mentioned making Adrien smiled amused at the friend.
âOkay, this is my last try, Eveline. This time I will scoreâ Etienne said bending his knees down a little closing his left eye aiming the basket, then he threw the ball against the board and it flew back over the basket landing on the ramp rolling down at the stand.
âCrapâ Etienne cursed stamping on the ground, then Eveline received from the owner of the stand the orange-colored ball to try her luck.
âHey Mister I would like to buy two tries for me and two for my friend,â Adrien said holding up his euro bill at the man, then the man took it and introduced it into a piggy bank-like sphere on the stand, where the money goes for the stand.
The man prepared the balls on the counter of the stand, then Kagami and Adrien took one ball, getting ready to throw.
âYou go first,â Adrien told the girl which looked forward at the three available baskets, then threw the ball at the basket, but it went a little deep and it only hit the net and fell down on the ramp.
âOkay shall I try now?â Adrien asked earning a nod from Kagami and Adrien observed the basket and went down on his knees and threw the ball up hitting the basket on the side, rolling around it and fall down on the side at the ramp, rolling it down at the ground of the place of the staff.
âThat was close!â Adrien complained, then he watched Kagami aiming with her arms the basket and she threw at it hitting the rim, falling down on the ramp, heading back to the ground.
âI lost,â Kagami said sad, then Adrien held his ball in front of Kagami.
âCome you did good, maybe this time you will scoreâ Adrien offered the girl, which shook her head.
âNo, itâs fine. I think you should have the last throwâ Kagami denied. âYouâre going to make this one betterâ
âAlright,â Adrien said, then from behind, he heard Amir call for the group.
âHey guys! Monsieur DâArgencourt said we should meet him in Spain in front of the arena. He said next there is a restaurant and thereâs an all you can eat buffet for only 21 euros with dessert and salad.â Amir told the four students.
âAwesomeâ Etienne said at the offer.
âWe will be on our way, Iâm just trying to score hereâ Adrien mentioned.
âThatâs easy boy, I can even do that with closed eyesâ
âOh really?â Adrien asked raising his eyebrow up at the confession of the brunette boy. âWhy donât you show me that?â
âAre you coming up with an excuse to not do this try, so you wouldnât fail?â The Egyptian boy asked watching Adrien turn around and look at the twin.
âNo why should I?â Adrien questioned. âI could also throw the ball like thisâŠ.â Adrien said throwing the ball with his back turned to the baskets and the ball hit inside the lodge on the top and it flew diagonally into the basket rolling inside the net down the ramp at the man, which nodded impressed.
âWhoa!â Etienne cried along with Amirâs brother as Adrien scored the ball and the blonde looked back and wide his eyes in surprise seeing the man take out a stick then walked up at the blonde.
âWhich price?â The man asked pointing at all the dog plushes on his stand.
âUh...which one do you find better, black, lavender or copper?â Adrien asked Kagami, which looked at the plushes and shrugged her shoulders.
âHonestly I find they all cuteâ Kagami answered and Adrien looked up at the dogs and pointed at the copper and white-colored husky.
âI take that oneâ Adrien said watching the man use the stick to pull the dog down, then the plush fell down on the counter of the stand with a hook, that had a white cord attached on it and the man untie it from the hook and placed it on the ramp and took the big plush handing it out to the son of the fashion designer.
âThank you,â Adrien said, then looked at Kagami looking at the plush Adrien had won at the game.
âWow looks like you got a new friend,â Kagami said starting to giggle along with the blonde.
âDo you want to keep him?â Questioned Adrien. âI gift it to youâ âWhat? No Adrien, you won it for youâ
âActually I wanted since the beginning to gift it to you if you didnât win,â Adrien said holding the plush closer to Kagami, then she smiled courteous at the French boy and took the pet by the side.
âThank you, Adrien,â Kagami said watching Adrien smile charmed at her, then Zeynep approached together with Laura and showed them their map.
âWeâre here next to the bobsleigh roller coaster and we have to go all the way here to the other side to the arena, where Mr. DâArgencourt awaits usâ The Turkish girl mentioned earning a nod from the two professional fencing students.
âLetâs go, Iâm starving,â Adrien said making the group laugh as they walked up the avenue up following by a post with arrows pointing to different directions showing the name of the different theme locations named after European countries.

any korean variety show recs?
alright so saddle up because this is long
for new watchers who know next to nothing about the korean entertainmentindustry, wants to learn more abt culture:
abnormal summit, esp s1. group of semi-diverse expat panel discussculture/issues and how it pertains/compares to south korea and their owncountries. also ngl some of the panels are hot so shoutout to sam oykere anddaniel from australia.
first time in korea. changing guest of long-time expats bring their friendsover to south korea to experience the culture for the first time. you getrambunctious friend shenanigans and crash course of interesting places to visit+ eat.
korean food table. long-ass running, well-beloved food show. im hungry.
for new watchers who want to get into it because of the hallyu wave:
x-man. the start of it all. fixed members and guests play games and try tofigure out who is the spy among them. the precursor to running man. it endedyears ago but itâs LEGENDARY. i canât tell u how many clips from some eps thatare still being played on other shows today. see your favorite stars at theirmost humble of beginnings. introduction to the dominating MCs of today: yoojaesuk and kang hodong.
happy together s3 (the sauna version). the only talk show of its kind withequal number of male and female mcs (sad ik). funny as hell, even withnon-celebs guests. way back when even jun hyun moo, the MC with the most showson his belt right now, was a nobody and made his bread and butter dancing toshineeâs Lucifer. great talking segments which iâm sad they got rid off in thelater iterations.
strong heart. a talk show where celebs share interesting stories from theirlives. if you can manage through kang hodongâs overly boisterous MC style, there are some absolute gems from this show but imo just watch based on theguests. also lee seunggi!
knowing brothers. popular talk show with a school-like setting. imo watch it based on the guests, again if you can manage through kang hodong lmao
i can see your voice. celebrity guests try to guess if a person is a good singer or tonedeaf.already multiple versions in asian countries. honestly surprised americansdonât get in on this.
masked singer. a panel try to guess who the voice from an unknown, masked singer belongsto. i donât know why they made an american version since the formula is onlythrilling with a tight-knit industry but ok!
weekly idol. if youâre into kpop, surely youâve seen random dancing segmentsby now. watch it based on who you stan i guess.
doesnât care about idols, just want to have fun:
new journey to the west. cast travels to a country and needs to win gamesfor food/sleeping place/dragon balls. fuckinnnn??? hilarious?? established cast and production team chemistry (from their previous show, 1night2days) so even the pilot doesnât have new cast awkwardness. stellar editingand ingeniously entertaining yet simple games. theyâre not afraid to rip eachother apart (some of the membersâ have someâŠinteresting past which is fun tobring up).
i live alone. a clip show of an average day of celebs who live alone. while it does haverotating celeb guests, the major draw of the show is the permanent panelmembers established in 2017, esp park narae (who is a legitimately talentedentertainer and tbh deserves better! youâll get what i mean when u watch theshow!!).
omniscient interfering interview. clips of daily lives of celebs and their managers (who in the industry arealways in the shadows but now itâs their time to shine). wildly popular thateven most of their managers have shot for commercials. watch for the fooddescriptions from lee youngja which was a career-defining talent for her thatshe won the channelâs top entertainment award. the first woman to have everdone so across all three major channels.
infinite challenge. this show has a LOT of episodes but imo watch these specials:Â the ballroom dance eps, the summer music festivals, bobsleigh challenge, calender model challenge, extreme part-time job, history x hip-hop, the jack black eps, saturday saturday i am a singer, and the (very incredible, very powerful) express delivery special. iconique.
running man. iâm amazed that this show is still airing. the choi minsoo eps and sherlockeps are one of the showâs stand-out. again, if youâre into the cast chemistry, check this out.
2 days 1 night (s1, skip to s4). where the new journey to the westâs cast chemistry and production team isfortified! season 1 was very popular but it ended because the director wantedto pursue his studies. season 2 and season 3 tried to capture its magic with new casts and directors but it just wasnât the same. when season 4 came ploddingalong, people thought itâll be canceled soon enough. the newest director was amentee of the original director though and with great luck in the new cast, season 4was herald as the showâs comeback. the âno smokingâ episode was brilliant. edit post chatroom scandal: from the bottom of my heart, donât watch s4 because of one member who is an honest-to-god piece of shit.
what on earth??. an underrated show! a limited series of four men who embarks in a dangerouscross country trip. the first few eps was set in a Qatar desert, the next inthe wetlands of Scotland. educational, good chemistry btwn the members, sharpediting. also not gonna lie part of the reason i did watch this was for ji jinhee. sue me i was in a jtbc misty withdrawal! shares the same director as 2d1n season 4!
sisterâs slam dunk. a rare show with an all-female cast with the premise of fulfilling eachmemberâs dream with the help of the other members. honestly just watch seasonone for min hyorinâs dream of debuting as an idol (hence dragging in the othermembers too, much to the chagrin of the older members). if you like thechemistry between members enough, stick around! the cast is funny andcharismatic and itâs just (sniffs) i love women! i still bop to the songs onthe regular too.
doesnât care about guests, just want to relax (my fave kind):
lee hyoriâs bed and breakfast. popstar lee hyori and husband opens up their home as a bread and breakfast. depression? cured! streamit on netflix!
little house in the forest. this show is glacialâŠin the best waypossible. itâs like an ingmar bergman film. honestly best to watch when youârein bed ready to sleep
younâs kitchen. legendary actress youn yeo jung opens a restaurant in a foreigncountry with season one in indonesia, season two in italy. idyllic af.
hodongâs kitchen. a spinoff show with the cast from new journey to thewest (they won a bet that if they win a game, their wish is to shoot a showlike younâs kitchen since they share the same director). if you like the njttwcast and want to see them run a small restaurant, hereâs your show!
blind date cafe. what it says on the can. blind dates are done in a cafe withwaitservice that consist of musician lee juck, actress yoo inna, comedian yang sehyung and sf9 member rowoon. itâs veryâŠcishet lmao buti love yoo inna and will watch her wait for paint to dry. some of the couplesare EXTREMELY valid tho (if anything, watch for the webtoon artist andchildrens horror book author! i STAN their love!)
coffee friends. actors set up a cafe. fulfill your coffee shop au daydreamwith yoo yoon seok here!
may food bless you. a team of close female friends that consist of actress hwayeong and comedian lee youngja, song euni, and kim sook gives advice and suggest food to aid for submitted concerns while having a meal. a great show to watch while having dinner.
note: these showsâŠarenât perfect. lemme be upfront that there can be elements of casual -isms in them (the relaxing shows are generally okay tho) and iâm just gonna leave it at that.

Love Can Melt the Ice, ch 13
Aka Edwin ice skating au!
Summary: More heart-to-heart between Ed and Winry after Edâs birthday party
A/N: Sorry for the long-ish wait, I hope Iâm making up for it with the longest chapter yet! This chapter was supposed to be fillery, but it ended up involving some pretty important stuff in it. This chapter is dedicated to @kittykatz009 who has been an amazing support to me and to whom I wish a very quick recovery. Please enjoy and review!Â
Previous chapters: Â 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5.5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12
Next chapter: [x]
Companion pieces (note: these are all post Olympics happenings so reading the main fic first is recommended): 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Words: 3030+ (wow I really did break the 3k word line!)Â
Genre: floof, some angst/hurt/comfort
Warnings: swearing, mentions of drinking, smoking and character deaths. Oh and Ed has a bit of a dirty mind.
âThanks, Winry.â Ed said suddenly as the two of them were walking back towards their hotel after the party. He had insisted he wanted to use his crutches because he was getting tired of sitting around, so his teammates had brought them for him sometime during the night. The rest of the gang had either left to sleep earlier or continue their night elsewhere, so that left Ed and Winry alone. Even Al had mysteriously disappeared before they had a chance to ask if he wanted to walk with them.
âFor what?â Winry asked, confused by this âoutburstâ.
âI donât know. For tonight? For sticking with me? Not letting me be an asshole?â Ed said sheepishly.
âPfft, I canât take credit for all that.â Winry dismissed it with a wave of her hand.
âI think you can. I wish there was a way to repay it for you.â
âI⊠think there is one way you could thank meâŠâ Winry was blushing slightly, her eyes twinkling playfully when she looked at him. Her gaze moved back and forth from his lips to his eyes, biting her lower lip lightly, letting Ed know what she wished.
âYou sure?â Ed asked quietly, and Winry just nodded.
He took one step closer and started to lean in. He was now as close as he had been earlier that day at the hospital before Winryâs phone had interrupted them⊠Damn it, why did she look so cute there in the moonlight? Her shiny hair felt soft under his fingers and her cheeks were adorably pink and warm in the chilly weather⊠Ed closed his eyes, finally ready to connect their lipsâŠ
And just like earlier, they were interrupted again. This time some guys Ed didnât know started whistling in the nearby smoking spot when they saw the couple. Winry recognized them as the bobsleigh guys she had seen earlier at the Olympics and was about to mention it to Ed when one of them spoke.
âHey look, isnât that the Rockbell girl we met earlier? She went out with that runt? The bitchâs got a bad taste.â
âOh, so you think me hanging out with someone who respects me instead of someone who calls me a bitch is âbad tasteâ? You losers are just angry I didnât let you get into my pants.â Winry retorted and pushed her ponytail behind her back for a dramatic effect.
âWinry!â Ed felt he shouldnât have been surprised Winry was perfectly capable of standing up for herself, but he still hadnât expected her to be that brave.
âHah, what pants? All you ever wear are skirts so short that I can see your underwear under them,â one of the guys yelled.
âEx-fucking-cuse me?â Ed couldnât keep his mouth shut any longer. âDo I need to beat the shit out of you?â He growled and bared his teeth like a wolf that was ready to attack. Winry hadnât seen this side of him earlier, and she got slightly scared of what might happen.
âEd, itâs not worth it! Theyâre just jealous. Youâre in no condition to fight anyway!â
âUnfortunately, youâre right,â Ed sighed, but waved his crutch threateningly at the men. âYou assholes can be happy that Iâm using crutches because otherwise youâd be seeing stars⊠This amazing woman here is worth about a million of you, and Iâm not afraid of fighting all of you if I ever hear any of you say anything disrespectful about her again. I mean it.â He stretched his arm muscles and flashed a bit of his automail from under the glove he was always wearing, making sure his statement was effective.
âNow come on, Win. Letâs go.â
âBut EdâŠâ she said when they were far enough that the guys couldnât hear them anymore, âarenât you worried theyâll say something about your automail?â
âI know the type of people those guys are, and they are way too coward to actually fight back. Besides, they only got a glimpse of it, they have no proof of anything. It might just as well have been a watch or something.â
âI have to admit, though, what you said about me was very sweet. Thank you.â Winry rested her hand on his shoulder for a moment.
âThat was nothing,â Ed rubbed the back of his neck again.
âDonât be so humble,â Winry said and squeezed Edâs hand, the real one, before they continued their walk.
The two of them casually chatted as they walked towards the hotel, about the events of the night, how Winry had gotten everyoneâs numbers (Roy had been a big help), how Winry knew the bobsleigh guys⊠For a while, they forgot where they were and simply enjoyed the moment. That was, until Ed asked an innocent question.
âSo, individual competition soon? Are you nervous?â
âI⊠I donât know. I havenât really been thinking about it much for the past two days,â Winry admitted. It was true, she really hadnât paid much attention to anything that was happening in the figure skating world after her incident. Garfiel would probably be angry when sheâd finally show up at the training arena. In her defense, though, there wasnât much she could do, with her foot still a bit tender.
âHowâs your foot? You will be able to compete, right?â Ed asked.
âUm, I think soâŠâ Winry shrugged. âIt still feels a bit weird when I walk but the doctor says it isnât badly injured. Just needs some rest.â
âThatâs good, right?â
âYeah⊠I just wish I could practice. I donât know you can handle not being able to play. My problem is much smaller, but itâs still frustrating.â
âTrust me, Iâm about to explode any minute now. Thatâs how much I hate this situation. But Iâm lucky to have some awesome friends who have helped me to distract myself.â He gave her a toothy grin.
âOh? Thatâs nice to hear.â Winry smirked happily, knowing that she was included to those âawesome friendsâ.
Soon the duo found themselves inside their hotel and started to make their way to their respective rooms. Winryâs was farther down the hallway so she stopped in front of Edâs to tell him good night, but he was fiddling with his bag, apparently trying to find something.
âDamn it! I must have left my card key with Havoc when he went to get my crutches and I canât call him anymore, he has probably passed out somewhere.â
âOh no. Well, you canât sleep in the hallway either, soâŠâ
âYeah? Do you have something in your mind?â Ed asked curiously.
âPlease donât get this wrong wayâŠâ Winry said, feeling slightly awkward. âGracia and I share a room, but she hasnât stayed there for a single night because Maes has a big bed, so⊠I guess thereâs some space in mine⊠I mean my room! Not bed! Not that Iâd mind⊠Ugh please stop me from babbling more!â
âI say this a lot, but you really are something else.â Ed smirked and raised Winryâs chin to meet her eyes. His golden gaze was enough to make her get quiet. For a while she thought heâd finally kiss her, but then he suddenly turned on his heels and started to hop towards Winryâs room on his crutches.
âWhat? You coming?â he asked when Winry just stood there, puzzled.
âYou sure you are OK with this? I mean⊠I know things between us have been a bit weird and I donât want you to feel uncomfortableâŠâ she asked.
âDidnât you just say there are two beds in your room?â Ed rolled his eyes. âItâs not really that weirdâŠâ
Winry was a bit confused by Edâs sudden change of demeanor. One moment he was pushing her away, the next he was already willing to share a room with her. Maybe⊠maybe this meant she had finally managed to make a crack into his hard shell. Thatâs what she wished, anyway.
âR-right. Letâs go in then!â
When inside, Winry showed Ed which bed was his and quickly pushed some of her underwear peeking from her bag out of sight (this situation was awkward enough as it was, in her opinion). Then she told Ed she was feeling kinda gross after a long day out, so she would take a quick shower before bed. Grabbing her towel and night clothes, she left Ed alone with his thoughts.
He soon regretted his choice to stay in Winryâs room, because as soon as the water started running in the small bathroom, his thoughts started to go to the wrong direction. That was Winry in there, wet and very much naked so close to him, with only a thin wall between them. Â
âStop it, Elric, you have absolutely no right to think of her that way,â he ordered himself in his mind. âShe deserves to be respected, not treated like I have treated her during the entire time weâve been together here.â
Pictures of water dropping into places he should absolutely not be thinking about filled his mind, and he tried to think of anything else that might cool him down. Roy being gross in the locker room. Armstrong flexing his muscles in every possible situation. Periodic table. Perfect. That seemed to work.
He would have to tell her how he felt sooner rather than later, he knew that much, but this was still too soon. Besides, Al had been right; she had the biggest competition of her entire life coming, which meant he really shouldnât mess with her more than he already had. It just got harder and harder every moment to keep everything inside him; they had been so close to kissing several times already, and once that happened⊠it would be impossible to deny that something was going on between them (obviously something was going on, but in Edâs opinion, they hadnât quite crossed that invisible line between friends and lovers quite yet.)
Edâs thoughts were interrupted by the opening door. Winry had thrown her towel around her shoulders, wearing a satin top and shorts that were short enough to make Edâs mouth drop. He shook his head and tried to focus on her face instead when he realized she asked something.
âIs⊠everything OK? Is your leg hurting or something? You look kinda weird.â
âHuh, yeah, itâs OK. Not hurting,â Ed stammered.
âThatâs good. I was getting a bit worried.â Winry said, totally oblivious to the effect she had on him. âHey, do you mind if I call it a day? Itâs been quite a long one and Garfiel is expecting me to be at the meeting tomorrow morning, so⊠â
âYeah, I am pretty exhausted myselfâŠâ Ed agreed and took his hoodie and jeans off, leaving him with his T-shirt and boxers. Then he laid down on his bed, pulling the covers on him.
Winry hung her towel on a chair and did the same. She was already nearly asleep when she heard Ed mumbling âgood nightâ from the bed next to hers.
âSleep tight,â Winry murmured and passed out soon after.
Ed didnât sleep tight, though. A lot of thoughts were running through his head, most of them making him confused. He had sworn after the Nina incident that he would never get anyone too close again, but then this girl had just suddenly skated in his life and not just broken but crushed the wall he had spent building for so many years. It was too late to back down now, which meant either theyâd keep drowning in this weird tension between them, or⊠heâd have to make a move to progress things.
Probably two hours into rolling around in his bed with no sleep in sight, Ed heard Winry mumbling in her sleep.
âEdâŠâ
She was seeing a dream of him! Once again Edâs thoughts started running too wildly, wondering what exactly happened in that dream of hers, but then he heard her say something else.
âMum⊠dad⊠no!â
OK, definitely not the kind of dream he had first thought of, he realized quickly. Winryâs movements got more restless, and something that sounded awfully like sobs and whimpers could be heard from her bed.
âWinry? Are you awake?â
No response.
She was quiet for a while, and Ed was about to pull his covers back on and try to get some sleep when she started making noises again.
âNo! Donât go there!â
âDonât go where?â Ed sat up again and reached for his crutches, so he could try to get Winry to wake up.
âWinry?â He sat on the edge of her bed and tried to shake her shoulders. At first gently, then a little bit harder. Without a warning, a fist shot up and hit Ed on the shoulder. Luckily, the hit wasnât strong enough to throw Ed off the bed, but it made him gasp her name loudly, finally waking her up.
âWhat are you⊠Oh my god, Iâm so sorry!â Winry exclaimed when she registered what must have happened. Her knuckles were throbbing for hitting the automail port and Ed was still rubbing his shoulder, looking slightly⊠surprised? Frightened?
âI swear I didnât mean to do that!â she hurried to add and gave him the most apologetic look she could manage.
âI know you didnât, you were asleepâŠâ Ed tried to calm her down, but that didnât work.
âThat doesnât excuse it⊠Are you OK?â
âI think I can handle a hit to my metal shoulder⊠itâs you Iâm worried about.â
âWhy?â She had hit him. Shouldnât he hate her or something?
âYou were screaming and thrashing around a lot before you woke up. I tried to get you to wake up for a good while.â
âOh⊠Seriously, sorry, Ed, I didnâtâŠâ
âWould you stop apologizing already? If you think Iâm scared of you⊠well, I might be, but for entirely different reasons.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âI canât tell you yet.â Ed stated seriously. âThis⊠isnât the right moment. Hey, are you crying?â
âIâm sorry, I guess I just got so overwhelmedâŠâ Winry managed to say between her sobs. âNot just about what just happened... This entire time Iâve been here has been quite an emotional rollercoaster⊠I guess I really am quite nervous about the competition, especially because I canât practice at all⊠And Iâm really missing my parents. I just saw a nightmare about them⊠and you.â
There was a time when Ed would have rather run away from a situation like this than faced it, and if he was honest, he still itched to do that, but his conscience started talking with Alâs voice and told him he needed to be there for his friend. How ironic, he thought, that his little brother had become his voice of reason. The Al in him pushed him to ask her about the dream, so he did:
âDo you want to talk about it?â
Winry was quiet for a while before answering: âI guess Iâve never told you the full story about them⊠I was 10 when it happened. As you probably remember, my parents were doctors, getting me interested in automail mechanics as well. One day there was a big accident on the road near Resembool, a truck crashed on a bus and a lot of people were injured. My parents, who were at home when the accident happened, were called into the hospital because they really needed all the extra hands they could get, and they of course were immediately ready to leave. I donât know why, but for some reason, I had a very bad feeling when I watched them get into their car. And it turned out my instinct was r-right.â
She threw her arms on his shoulders when she leaned to sob against his t-shirt. She hadnât let herself think about parents in a long while, so now the bottled emotions all seemed to come out at once.
âT-they d-died on a car crash on their way to the h-hospital. A d-drunk driver had driven to the wrong side of the road⊠and you c-can probably g-guess the restâŠâ
âYeah,â he simply said, holding her a bit tighter and rubbing her back with his real hand soothingly.
âThis is going to sound really weird, but⊠in my dream⊠you were with them in that carâŠâ
Ed didnât know what possessed him to say: âThat doesnât sound weird at all⊠Remember when you were in my room to see my automail and I just left suddenly? I⊠had a bit similar vision. I could see what happened with Envy and Al in my mind, but you were there too.â
That made Winry stop sobbing and she raised her head from Edâs shoulder to see him better.
âYou did?â
âYeah⊠thatâs why I freaked out so much. I realized it meant⊠something.â He still couldnât say it aloud.
Instead of trying to tiptoe around the topic, Winry asked directly: âEd? What the hell is going on between the two of us?â
âI really donât know,â Ed answered. âIâm a mess and youâre a mess and Iâm not sure if Iâm ready to start anything yet⊠but thatâs something I need to figure out,â he said with determination, giving her the hope she needed.
âThanks for your honesty,â Winry said quietly and pulled Ed with her onto her bed carefully, mindful about his leg, so that they were laying on their sides, facing each other.
âHey, cheer up.â Ed wiped some of her tears away with his fingers. âI hate to see you crying. The only tears I want to see from you are tears of joy.â
He inhaled deeply, trying to get some courage, and finally added: âListen, Iâm sorry I canât tell you the things I want to tell you quite yet, Iâm just not ready⊠But know that I wonât be going anywhere any time soon. Some damn persistent woman has finally managed to convince me.â
He was grateful she had buried her face against his chest again because his face was rather red when he said that.
âIâm glad,â she said, wrapping her arms tightly around his torso. He kept brushing her hair with his fingers, and they stayed like that until they fell asleep. No more nightmares were seen on that night.

Sam Waller Interview
Sam Waller co-runs, the UK based Central Library, âa shop in the North West of England that sells zines, DVDs and other interesting bits and pieces.â Heâs also part of the current resurgence of quality independent BMX media with his Red Steps magazine. In addition to that he finds the time to contribute to Challenger with his quarterly column, âNotes From A Fancy Islandâ and of course, ride. And, when you talk to Sam, you can tell that riding reigns supreme.
Sam and I email back and forth fairly often because of the column but also about other random stuff like old spots, concrete skateparks, music, etc. Itâs fun to email with Sam so I figured it would also be fun to ask Sam some more in-depth questions. Hit the link below for the full interview.
All photos by Gaz Hunt. Thanks, Gaz!
I know you live in Manchester, England now but where did you grow up and what is your BMX origin story? I grew up in the complete middle of nowhere in a place called Colton in the south of the Lake District. Whilst the countryside in film and television is often shown as a tranquil, quaint place, the reality is a fair bit different, and Colton in particular seemed like a hotbed for strange stuff going on. Only recently a large farmhouse was burned down by a wild woman who owned loads of pigs. She was exiled from the county, but the pigs remained to cause havoc.
Anyway, my older brother has played guitar since he was six or seven, but as I was a useless at it and couldnât get my hands to move properly, I felt obliged to find a similar all-encompassing past-time.
I was mad on Formula 1 racing for a while (thoughts go out to the Schumacher family), and I went to a karate lesson once (a hobby quickly scrapped after the whole hour was spent being taught how to bow honourably), but up until the age of 12 or 13 it just felt like I was dawdling about.
All of this changed when, for some reason Iâm not entirely sure of, me and my friends decided to make some jumps and drops and stuff to ride on our mountain bikes in some woods near a dual carriageway.
One of my friends knew some older lads from nearby who had proper bikes and Little Devil hoodies, so I think they must have planted the seed of raditude with him, but I think at that time I was just happy to be out the house and not playing Tekken 2. We later found out that the woodland weâd chosen was a popular dogging site frequented by truck drivers (I'm not sure if 'dogging' exists in America - maybe look it up), and quickly moved our spades and everything into another forest. By that point the damage was done and my mind was snagged.
After a bit of bouncing about on a mountain bike, I then splashed out on a second hand Standard that someone had painted post-box red, affixed some stunt nubs and never looked back (or lookbacked, for that matter).
The nearby town of Ulverston had a pretty big riding and skating scene, but thinking now about us lot trying to lay down âstreet styleâ in this small historic market town, we may as well have been the Jamaican bobsleigh team â the rough ledges were strictly for stalls, and the closest thing to a flatbank was a grass verge round the back of a Texaco garage.
What were some of your biggest inspirations as a kid and what about now? I always think about how the 16 year old me would probably make fun of some of the things I'm into now. Is that the case with you at all? Apart from the receding hairline and the slight increase in responsibilities, I think Iâve stayed pretty much exactly the same since I was 16. Back then I think my favourite film was probably Natural Born Killers, and my favourite album was maybe something like Bad Moon Rising by Sonic Youth. Whilst Iâve maybe expanded my interests a little, Iâve pretty much been in a rut since then.
Iâm not into memes or internet humour in the slightest, but I remember someone once showing me a video of a wrestling fan in America crying and shouting, âItâs still real to me, dammit.â Thatâs how I feel about a lot of things I was into back then. A lot of people who I went to school with moved on from being into music and films and pissing around on bikes, whilst Iâm still snagged on it all, listening to The Minutemen and wearing check shirts. Itâs pretty stupid really.
What's The Fancy Island? Good question. Just next to Strangeways prison and only a mere stoneâs throw from Manchesterâs slick centre, lies a true rat-pit of questionable activity. Iâve seen loads of stuff happen here, such as an aggressive man chase a prostitute with a two-by-four and a creep lying in an alley trying to lure small boys into his lair.
In amongst all this, thereâs loads of naff wholesale shops that sell everything from low-end Halloween costumes to fake Air Jordans made out of cardboard and fuzzy felt. All these shops have mad names like EEZZEE and Vibe Centre.
Getting to the point now, coming up with titles for things is pretty difficult, so a few years ago when I was cobbling together a zine, I nicked the name Urban Mist from one of these shops, and then, when I went to set up a Tumblr during the carefree pre-Instragram era, I nabbed âFancy Islandâ from a similar establishment.
I think Fancy Island has closed down now, but itâs no doubt been replaced with yet another shop with a daft name selling cheap batteries and t-shirts with swear words on the front.
Whilst Iâm explaining names, Iâll state that Red Steps is a classic spot in Manchester that I ride past on my way to work every day. It boasts a rusty, needle-thin flatrail, a few small stair-sets (that are indeed red) and a large flow of gormless students to crash into. Iâm not too sure why I named a magazine after it, but it just struck me as a funny name for a spot and I was struggling to think of anything else.
One thing I struggle with is balancing how to take BMX seriously while balancing a sense of humor about it as well; i.e. it's pretty goofy but is also this amazing vehicle for new experiences, ideas, and a pretty incredible community. Do you ever think about this? Like with most things in life (except crucial necessities like eating and breathing), riding bikes is pretty stupid and abstract if you try and think about it too hard. That said, I donât see why bike riding should look goofy (apart from actual goofy-footed grinding - as a self-confessed goofy grinder myself Iâve got a lot of time for George D, Ralph and Dave McDermott) â riding is loads better than pretty much all other activities, but itâs constantly being made to look daft, when it could so easily look dope.
I think to stay juiced and not turn sour, youâve got to completely ignore most things going on with riding and stick firmly to the bits that you like. I treat riding like music or films or anything else. In the same way I donât go to the cinema to watch big summer blockbusters, I donât spend my free time watching Corey Martinez edits or endless hours of footage from some zany mega-comp.
Iâm a simple man. As far as riding is concerned, I like smith grinds, bottles of Heineken, Galaxy chocolate, black and white photos, sitting on benches and talking complete nonsense. The rest of it is irrelevant to me.
I constantly hear/read people complain about the lack of BMX magazines but there's so much cool stuff being printed right now. We've discussed this in email a bit but it seems weird that people are complaining. It's almost like people just have an idea of what they think a magazine should be and if it doesn't have look or read a certain way they are just confused. How do you feel about all of this? A solid group of people do buy things and support these independent projects and whatnot, but I think itâll take a while for the loud-mouthed Instagram warlords to come to terms with the fact that the new magazines around might have different names to the ones they used to subscribe to 15 years ago. I suppose itâs maybe easier to talk about the lack of magazines out there than actually go to the effort of seeking them out, but having said that, itâs not exactly hard to find stuff these days.
I remember years ago hunting down anything beyond Dig or Ride was an absolute hassle involving a lot of e-mail mither and blind faith - but now with yourself, Berks St. and 90East stocking interesting stuff in America, me and Clarky doing Central Library over here and the newly formulated Wiretap down under, itâs easier than ever for anyone to get their hands on zines and DVDs and all that.
The new stuff thatâs coming out now is ten times better than Dig or Ride ever were anyway. Endless contest reports and dull bike checks have fallen by the wayside, and I havenât seen a photo of Jimmy Levanâs zebra-print leggings in years. Things are really looking up.
What do you do for work? Thoughts on pursuing money via BMX and also what's the best job you've ever had? By day I work in an office writing stuff for a clothes shop. As you can imagine, trying to come up with an interesting way to talk about the 659th blue shirt youâve seen this week can get a bit tough, but I canât complain too much really. The office is fairly warm and thereâs a kettle in the kitchen.
As for pursuing âserious wongaâ via riding, Iâm one step ahead of you. Central Library has just received big investment from Duncan Bannatyne and Deborah Meaden (of Dragonâs Den fame), meaning weâre finally able to stock all those bizarre Caramac-coloured tyres that real bike shops seem to stock. Weâre also expanding our print line to offer crime fiction and the Goosebumps novels. My main aim in life is to become one of those creepy industry characters who spends their time sniffing around young and naĂŻve talent in the hopes of flogging a few âdad capsâ.
My finest job was probably working for my dad in the family trade of dry stone walling (which explains my surname). Iâm not sure if dry stone walls exist in America, but theyâre those fairly humble looking stone walls you see dividing up the fields and forests around the English countryside.
Anyway, building them isnât too bad as far as manual labour goes. When itâs raining and youâre miles up some hill wallowing in the mud lugging big stones around with nothing more for lunch than a chicken and mushroom Pot Noodle and a Penguin biscuit, then itâs a little miserable â but on a good day when the sun is shining and youâre working with âgood stoneâ, itâs hard to beat.
The best days were when my dad would fall asleep just a few minutes before the end of the lunch hour, basically extending the break for at least another 45 minutes. Thinking about this job now, Iâm not sure why I ever gave it up.
Do you have any other hobbies besides riding? Yeah, but Iâd say the lines were pretty blurred. This is maybe a pretty boring answer, but I suppose riding lends itself to other hobbies pretty well. I might be wrong, but I donât think keen swimmers or budding javelin-throwers get into photography or making videos in quite the same way. Itâs sort of like the âpillars of hip-hopâ or something â riding, taking pictures, messing round with video stuff and generally snooping around all fits together nicely (or at least it does in my peppered mind).
Itâs not like Iâm slipping on my Etnies t-shirt for my weekly two hour power sesh and then the next night Iâm wearing some short-shorts down at the climbing wall. Even when Iâm on holiday with my wife, Iâm still just snooping around the same way - weâre not buying tickets for some naff rollercoaster or dining out at exclusive restaurants with Abe Froman.
Are you able to take time off of riding and not feel like you're missing out or feel guilty? I have one friend who really goes in on the guilt tripping if I don't ride. Related: You said you like sitting on benches. Can you do that on a nice day? At the age of 28, Iâd like to feel like I can just about deal with a few missed sessions. Obviously I still need a comprehensive run down of spots seshed and feats accomplished when Iâm away, but itâd be mad if I was out all the time. The human body canât handle that much raditude.
Fear of things going un-photographed does creep in sometimes, but Clarky will have filmed it anyway, and Gaz and Wozzy are better photographers than me, so if theyâre about then hopefully someone caught the action.
Moving onto the subject of benches, these babies really come into play during my dinner break at work. I get on fine with everyone there, but when the clock strikes twelve Iâm not going to be sat in the office spilling reheated chilli over my keyboard⊠Iâm straight out into the city centre on full sit-off mode â hopefully getting into some daft conversation with one of Manchesterâs many vagabonds.
A few months ago I was sat in town when I was approached by a fairly scruffy gentleman who was bleeding loads from his forehead after someone kneed him in the skull. The rest of my lunch break was spent trying to sort him out a bit. One meal deal, some wet wipes and a pack of king-skins later, he seemed alright. You donât get these hijinks sat inside all day. Â
I was just thumbing through the new Red Steps (nice job) and I just realized how much I enjoy your interviews -- what is it that you like about interviews? Not trying to stroke the ego here but you are really good at it... Cheers. Any ego strokes are much appreciated. This maybe sounds a bit daft, but I want to know everything. This is probably evident to the people who know me, but Iâm a complete mither, completely hassling everyone with questions all the time.
This pesky nature extends into everything, meaning that I spend a lot of time reading a lot of interviews about the things that Iâm into. I buy a lot of old copies of magazines like Wire, Ray Gun and Sidewalk on eBay, and even though the interviews contained within those pages might have been conducted in the corner of a pub maybe 25 years ago, theyâre still worth reading today.
A proper interview with a little intro and some photos laid out nicely on a page⊠itâs mint â itâs a finished thing â sort of like a well-edited video or something. I know a lot of people are into âpodcastsâ these days, and thatâs fair enough, but to me â theyâre not complete enough. I donât want to hear people say âumâ and âerrâ all the time, and I want something sick to look at (and by that, I donât mean a load of pundits sat around a table with headphones on). Â
Iâm going to rattle on here whilst Iâve got the chance. Anyone reading this who gets the opportunity to answer questions for an interview, a âbike checkâ or anything elseâŠdonât just write a lazy sentence for each answer â go mad. Tell some funny stories. Or if youâve got nothing to say, just make something up. No one cares about how responsive your headtube angle is or how you âusually just cut the bars downâ. This could be your only chance to air your thoughts into the wider world, and youâre going on about what PSI you put in your tyres? COME ON PLEASE TRY HARDER YOU BORING GIMPS.
(above) Spread from Samâs zine, Latvia Photos. (below) Cover of Samâs zine, Around Town.
You also make photo zines/books not related to riding. Do you have any high art aspirations with this stuff? No real aspirations Iâm afraid. Wine gives me bad heartburn, so I generally try and swerve anything resembling a gallery opening schmooze-off. As I was sort of saying before, making photo zines is just an extension of everything else. I like taking photographs, so it makes sense to put them together. Itâs all pretty small-time really â itâs not like Iâm getting thousands printed.
To be honest, itâs all a complete faff that I could easily avoid by not bothering and just sitting around watching American power-dramas, but itâs good to have stuff to look back on â even if itâs just a 40 page zine that nine people will see.
Crouching under a tattered old curtain processing rolls of film every night whilst being mithered by my cat isnât particularly glamorous and Iâd imagine there are probably easier ways to get cosy with the artistic elite.
What's your favorite slang word? Going back to my walling days, my dad uses some pretty intriguing slang terms. Unlike inner-city slang, which will usually be documented in music or useless BBC3 comedies, these more rustic words donât get much recognition. I don't use these terms myself, but I certainly respect them. Hereâs a few choice cutsâŠ
âA few skins on the jobâ â a large workforce âKeitelâ â a fairly humble work-jacket âBaitâ â lunch âBray it â hit it âKessenâ â when an unclipped sheep falls over onto its back and canât get up due to its weight. This happens more often than youâd think.
You can buy scoop up a copy of Samâs magazine, Red Steps, in the Challenger web shop here, look at the online shop, The Central Library, that Sam runs with Clarky here, and check out some of his other photo zines/books here.

CrossFit Games 2021 Preview â What to Expect From CrossFitâs Best
After a two year hiatus, The live CrossFit competition returns to Madison, Wisconsin. From July 27th to August 1st, nearly 40 of the fittest men and women in the world will run, swim, paddle, row, swing, tear, and squat through grueling physical challenges posed by dozens of teams, teenagers, champions, and adaptable athletes a minute to a couple of hours. The individual winners will each take home $ 310,000, the highest payout in the history of the game.
The road to this yearâs games is particularly long for athletes. The structure of the competition has changed again this year; there was the Open in March, the quarter-finals in early May and the semi-finals a few weeks later. During such an unusually long season, athletes had to take extra care to rejuvenate their fitness plans at the right time and take care of their bodies.
âI hate to say it, but there could be an injury or something else that will ruin your plan, so you canât hold on to an idea. You have to be ready to go up and down, âsaid Noah Ohlsen, the runner-up in 2019, before the Open.

And while some of these competitions were in person, others were relocated from a central location and tracked online, which is a special type of mental torture, Pat Vellner, a three-time athlete of the Games, said in a recent interview. âRacing Ghost is tough,â he said. âYou never know whether you will be first or last, or whether you should call or call back.â
Nonetheless, Vellner, along with many other audience favorites and alleged front runners, all made it through.
Who to watch out for at the 2021 CrossFit Games
For the women, all eyes are on Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr, the four-time Games winner. As a member of Australiaâs 2016 Olympic weightlifting team (she finished 14th) and possibly a 2022 Olympic team member for bobsleigh, she is arguably the fittest woman the sport has ever seen. Should she get through the weekend injury free, sheâll likely end it by being at the top of the podium.
However, donât be surprised if you see Haley Adams, Bethany Shadburne, or Laura Horvath there too â or if that list includes one (or more) mothers. Five women, one eighth of the field, have children.
Toomey-Orr and Fraser will finish the 2020 Games together.
Courtesy CrossFit Inc.
For men, horse racing is essentially wide open following the resignation of Mat Fraser, Toomey-Orrâs former training partner and champion for the past five years. Competing are games podium veterans like Pat Vellner, Noah Ohlsen, Cole Sager and Brent Fikowski, as well as recent outbreaks like Justin Medeiros and Jayson Hopper.
Ultimately, the winner will likely be determined by a mix of strategy, programming, luck â and who is best at dealing with the known.
What events will be in the 2021 CrossFit Games?
While some events have already been announced, including a 550-yard sprint and a triad of rope climbing, ski-erg, and sandbag carrying, others have only been teased, like the first event that will be âswim long and paddle distance even longer.â Many will remain a mystery for up to a few hours (or minutes) before the buzzer sounds.
Inevitably there will be surprises. At last yearâs games, which were held at The Ranch in California due to Covid-19 restrictions, the athletes completed a three-mile trail run â only to learn that they had to turn around and do everything in the opposite direction. For another year, athletes were never told the moves or rep scheme for the event called âchaosâ. Instead, they worked until their judge told them they could move on.
Noah Ohlsen competes in the sprint at the 2019 Games.
Courtesy CrossFit Inc.
After such a long absence from Madison, and after only five men and women were allowed to compete against each other last year, the games are likely to be particularly challenging. This can be due to the number of events (e.g. anything over 15), the scope of the workload (such as another marathon series), the skills required (again a handstand obstacle course) or the rapid sequence of events (such as the notorious.) barn burner, wrestler 1 and wrestler 2).
Regardless of the program, however, viewers will almost certainly be relieved to get back on the stands and watch the fitness sport. Would you like to join in and tune in from home? Here is how.

Female Representation in the Olympic Games
COMM 335
Female athletes have not always been allowed to participate in the Olympics due to the harsh levels of inequality that they faced. When the first Olympic Games took place in 1896, the founder Pierre De Coubertin felt as if their participation would be inappropriate. In fact, his exact words were âNo matter how toughened a sportswomen may be, her organism is not cut out to sustain certain shocksâ (See 120 years). Eventually, with a lot of effort and courage, women were able to break their way into the athletic field and participate in the most competitive competition in the world, The Olympics. However, although females are allowed to partake in the athletic game that does not mean that they are being treated at the same level as males. Women still face a number of challenges and inequalities when competing in this competition.
The first modern Olympics were held in Athens, Greece, in 1896. Baron Pierre De Coubertin, the founder of the games, presented this idea in 1894. The first Olympic Games involved no female athletes. During this time it was believed that women were not as athletically talented as men, therefore they did not need to be included in this world wide event. However, this did not stop women from trying to compete in some of the events of the Olympics. In the first modern Olympic Games a woman named Stamati Revithi wanted to run the marathon with the men, but her registration was rejected. In turn, she decided to run the marathon by herself the next day. She followed the same course as the men had, besides the final lap in which she had to do outside of the stadium because she was not allowed in (Houry).  It was not until 1900 that the Games accepted female athletes because The International Olympic Committee (IOC) could not devise a legitimate structure that prevented women from participating in the Games (Houry).  Although accepted, females had very little representation in their first Games. There were a total of 22 females out of 997 athletes. They were able to participate in 5 events, however only 2 of these events were exclusive to women (The Inescapable). Not only were women underrepresented among the athletes, they were also underrepresented on the executive board. The board was all male until 1990 when the first woman was elected. It was not until 1997 until the second women joined the board. Although it seemed as if women were starting to make their way into the Olympic world, they still had many struggles to overcome along the way.
During the 1990 Olympic Games women were allowed to participate in 5 sports. These sports included tennis, sailing, croquet, equestrian, and golf.  However, only tennis and golf were exclusive to women, the other sports were mixed. As the years went on, women were allowed to participate in more and more events. It took up until 1992, almost a century after the first females participated in the Olympics, for womenâs events to reach half the number of menâs events. However, this did not mean that women were being treated equally to men. For example, although women were competing, there were still many more competitions for men than there were for women. This obviously resulted in more medals being assigned to men than to women. However, this is to be expected when the number of male athletes is significantly higher than the number of female athletes. As the years went on, females became more involved in the Olympic Games. They fought to be allowed to compete in more and more events each year. However, females are not yet being treated with the same respect as the male athletes are.
Even today females are underrepresented in the Olympic Games. The last one, that took place in Rio, had more menâs events (161) than womenâs and mixed events (145). While the number of female competitors is rising, they still only make up for about 45 percent of the total athletes (Statistics).  Not only are they still trailing behind male participants in numbers, but they are still being treated unfairly. For example women compete in shorter distances than men in every track event- individual, sprint, pursuit, mass start, and relay. This is also true for women who participate in cross country skiing and long track speed skating. Not only are their distances shorter, but they also have fewer events for these sports.
For example, in bobsleigh the men have two events, while the women only have one. This is similar in the ski jump event. Men compete in three events, while women only compete in one. Even after women are given less opportunity to compete than men, they are continued to be looked down upon even when they win their medals. For example, a video from an Olympic Games commentator talks about how when women win medals, many people blame it on things like luck rather than their athletic ability or hard work.
http://www1.udel.edu/udaily/2012/jun/Olympic-commentary-061812.html
Although women have fought for equality on issues like these, some people still have incredibly ignorant views. In 2014, a Russian ski jumping coach said that ski jumping was not appropriate for women because âwomen have another purpose-to have children, to do housework, to create hearth and homeâ (The Inescapable). Another example of how women are treated unfairly in the Olympic Games is how they are referred to as âladiesâ. A video was posted on ThinkProgress with an article titled âThe Inescapable Sexism of the Winter Olympicsâ that highlighted how women are often called âladiesâ rather than just saying women. Jenny Kirk, a former elite figure skater, talked about how she thought being called a lady made them seem as if they are very gentle and proper when in fact they are actually tough and athletic. She also pointed out that men are never referred to as âgentlemenâ when they are talking about their participation in the Olympic Games. Many would find it odd if the male athletes were referred to as gentlemen because during their participation in the games they are not supposed to be âgentlemenâ they are supposed to be athletes, just like women.
https://thinkprogress.org/gender-equality-olympics-3afc68e45226/
Not only have women been underrepresented in the actual participation within the athletic events, but they are also outnumbered in the administrative side of the Olympics. While The International Olympic Committee strives towards improving the balance of men and women inside the organization, they have not quite reached their goal. Because women are now heavily involved in the participation throughout the Olympics, they should also be involved in the decision making process. There are currently four women on The International Olympic Committee executive board, out of fifteen. While it is better than nothing, this is not exactly the ratio that gives women an equal voice in the organization. However, there is a larger female representation in the IOC, women make up about 45 percent of the commission. This is a 124% increase since 2013. As of January 2019, 34 percent of the IOC members are women (Statistics). This proves that while the IOC still has work to do; it is making great strides in gender equality.
Clearly the IOC recognizes the inequality within the Olympic Games and is taking steps to fix it. Along with integrating more women into the executive/administrative side of the Olympics, they are also trying to expand the Olympic programs to include more womenâs events. A rule made in 1991 stated that âany new sport seeking to be included on the Olympic program needs to be required to include womenâs eventsâ (Statistics). Another great stride that the Olympics made towards gender equality was during the 2012 Olympics, where NBC U.S. prime-time broadcast gave more airtime to womenâ sports than to menâs sports. This was the first time that this has happened since 1996 (Coche). Another important change that has been made is the event program for Tokyo 2020 will have a 48.8 percent female participation. This is a record breaking high in the participation of female athletes in the Olympic Games. Never have there been an (almost) equal number of men and women competing in the Games. This is a great achievement for both female athletes and for the Olympic Games themselves.
It has been a long time coming for women to feel as if they have equal opportunity within the Olympic Games. From not being allowed to compete, women have fought for their rights as athletes to be considered for such a high level of competition. Females have faced many challenges throughout the years, but have managed to overcome each obstacle and almost match the amount of male athletes participating in the Olympic Games. Although women still face discrimination within the organization, they are no longer putting up with it and now voice their opinions in order to end it. If anything, the continued discrimination only pushes the female athletes to become better, to prove to the world that they not only deserve to be there, but they can hold their own against male athletes.

(Olympics) S. Korean skeleton slider confident of strong next rounds
By Joo Kyung-don
PYEONGCHANG, South Korea, Feb. 15 (Yonhap) â South Korean skeleton slider Yun Sung-bin was confident Thursday of another sound performance in his next runs after he took the lead with a track record at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
Yun, currently ranked No. 1 in the International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation (IBSF) rankings, posted a combined time of 1 minute, 40.35 seconds after his first two runs at Olympic Sliding Centre to take first place among 30 sliders in PyeongChang, Gangwon Province, 180 kilometers east of Seoul.
At the Winter Games, skeleton sliders race for two days, with two runs per day. The four times will be added together and the slider with the fastest total time will get the gold medal. The remaining two heats will be run on Friday.
âIâm just halfway through my goal,â Yun said after his race. âItâs not over yet, so Iâm not going to make early predictions.â
Wearing his trademark âIron Manâ helmet, Yun took the lead in dominant fashion. He finished his first heat with a track record of 50.28, and went even faster in his second run with 50.07. The 23-year-old was also the slider with fastest start on the track.
âI feel happy about the track record,â he said. âI had a small mistake in my first heat, but I was able to fix that mistake and got a better time later.â
Yun said avoiding mistakes is the key to a historic gold medal. No Asian â man or woman â has won a medal in an Olympic skeleton competition.
âI had small mistakes in other curves, not that important curves like No. 2 or 9,â he said. âYou might not notice from outside, but us, these small mistakes can be critical because they can change your rankings.â
Ahead of the next two heats, Yun said heâll try to rid himself of the pressure.
âToday, I raced with full confidence,â he said. âTomorrow, Iâll try to make myself comfortable on the track.â
South Koreaâs Yun Sung-bin waves to fans after finishing his second heat in the menâs skeleton event at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics at Olympic Sliding Centre in PyeongChang, Gangwon Province, on Feb. 15, 2017.

Jamaican Women's Bobsled Team - What Place Did Jamaican Bobsled Team Finish?
In this year, the year of our Lord and The Woman, itâs time to feel the rhythm. Feel the rhyme. Woman up. Itâs bobsled time.
Thirty years after sending its first bobsleigh team to the Winter Olympics, Jamaica sent its first womenâs team to compete and, sadly, they are now all but out of medal contention at this point, landing in 18th place. But if weâre getting a Roseanne reboot at ABC, somebody can reach into that Disney money and turn this bad boy, nay woman, of a story into a sequel because itâs what the world needs right now.

The two-woman team is comprised of Jazmine Fenlator-Victorian, who piloted for the U.S. at the Sochi games in 2014, and Carrie Russell, a sprinter who led Jamaica to gold at the 2013 Track and Field World Championships. Keep this in mind, itâs important.

The whole plot of Disneyâs 1993 masterpiece, Cool Runnings, is based on the first Jamaican team, founded by a sprinter who fails to qualify for the Summer Olympics in 1988. Guess who else is a sprinter? Yeah, we already said it, but this is for drama: Carrie Russell. You might call this comparison a coincidence, or more reasonably, âlogical.â For the sake of Cool Runnings 2, weâre going to refer to this as âthe hand of God at work.â
Some more details: unlike the four-man team depicted in the film, the womenâs team has two slots, with the sled driven by Fenlator-Victorian and pushed by Russell, though fellow sprinter Audra Segree will be going to South Korea as an additional brakewoman.
Their original sled, provided by their coach, was named Mr. Cool Bolt, a nod to the film and superhuman sprinter Usain Bolt, also from Jamaica. And because the comparisons shouldnât end with the competitors, their coach is Sandra Kiriasis, a two-time bobsled Olympic medalist from Germany.

The big twist, of course, is that Coach Kiriasis backed out at the last minute, taking Mr. Cool Bolt with her. This is what we like to call a Third Act Twist. All was lost until International Hero of Jamaica, Red Stripe, stepped in with a tweet and offered to âput the new sled on their tab.â
Take my seventeen dollars and reserve my opening weekend ticket now.
Nigeria is also sending its inaugural womenâs team to Pyeongchang, with Seun Adigun, Ngozi Onwumere and Akuoma Omeoga leading the charge as the first team from not just Nigeria, but the whole freaking continent of Africa. All three members of their team have a celebrated background in track and field.

Cool Runnings, which grossed an impressive $155 million box office on a $14 million budget, follows the original team to the final day of competition where their sled lost a blade. The Jamaicans finished the race by carrying the bobsled over their heads.
The womenâs teamâs final two runs are Wednesday, Feb. 21, and in the Disney version of events, they stage a stunning comeback and square off against the Nigerian team. Hereâs hoping.
