TSC boys will be TSC boys (ft. Cody, my beloved nb)
Low-stakes fanfic in which 3 backliners (Cody, Lucas, and Jean [included against his will]) bet 3 strikers (Jeremy, Nabil, and Derrick) that if the backliners can keep the strikers from making any successful shots on goal during a team exercise, then Jeremy will get his ears pierced.
Of course Jean balls out and so do the other 2 so the strikers lose.
Jeremy is deathly afraid of needles (in my head), and Nabil can't join them because he's going home to eat dinner with his family, but Pat joins in last-minute.
Pls be kind this is my first ever fanfic (╥﹏╥)
By the time practice was over and they had all showered, changed, and dispersed to their cars, it was past six in the evening. The drive to their destination took less than fifteen minutes, and soon they were pulling into the parking lot of a low, dingy strip mall that looked like it had needed a fresh coat of paint about two years ago. The studio that Nabil had Googled for them was nestled in the far right corner under a large sign emblazoned Black Eye Tattoo. Between the second and third words, a large eye gazed out over the parking lot with a swirling design where its iris and pupil should’ve been. After they parked, Jeremy drummed his fingers on the steering wheel out of time with the pop song on the radio as he stared up at the sign. A few moments later, they spotted the rest of the boys and Cody heading towards them, and Jeremy twisted the key to kill the engine with a long-suffering sigh. He shooed Derrick off his car when he tried to strike a provocative pose on the hood, and Pat held the door of the place open for all of them as a doorbell chimed over their heads.
Jean was more than a little intimidated by the woman standing behind the counter inside. Her jet black hair hung in choppy bangs over her forehead but the rest was tucked behind her ears, making it easy to see the neon rings that stretched her earlobes to twice the normal size. Her haughty gaze didn’t change as the six of them filed through the door and crowded the small lobby space. Pat and Derrick flopped down on the low, bloodred velvet couch set against the far wall, so Jean and Jeremy leaned against the front windows. Cody and Lucas eagerly approached the front counter. The air felt near-frigid after the California heat outside, and Jean savored the sunshine warming his back.
“Aren’t you gonna go check out the options?” Derrick asked Jeremy, who cringed. “I’d rather not look at any of this until absolutely necessary,” he said, and Derrick smirked. At the counter, Lucas and Cody were explaining the situation to the indifferent-seeming woman. Jean squinted to read the cursive scrawl on her metal name tag. Cherie, with a little hand-drawn border of black flowers and vines.
“All the stones here are available for lobe piercings, organized by size,” she said, dragging her finger in a line over one section of the glass counter that separated her from the lobby. Jean listened a little closer than he normally would, but her voice carried no hint of a French accent. “All our metals are surgical-grade steel, and they come in silver, gold, rose gold, or black finishes. No difference in price.”
“What’s the cheapest option?” Lucas asked. Cherie gave him an unimpressed look that said she was sick of servicing poor college students, but she tapped a black fingernail against the glass. “This one, three millimeter cubic zirconia. $65.”
“That’s quite the chunk of change for two little holes,” Pat muttered from the couch. Jean figured he hadn’t meant to be overheard, but Cherie said, “One.”
The group looked at her. She clarified. “The $65 is for one piercing. And that doesn’t include tip,” she added, giving them a pointed look. When half the group made a sound of disbelief, Jeremy shushed them with a “Hey, guys.”
Lucas rounded on Cody. “So you’re loaded or something?” he asked, gesturing to their heavily-studded face.
Cody grinned. “My friend’s aunt owns a tattoo shop. She does mine for free.”
Lucas slapped his palms on the counter and sighed in dramatic relief. “Well, call her up then!”
“Dude, she lives in Arizona.”
Lucas sank to rest his head on his flattened hands in defeat. In the end it was decided that Jeremy would only be getting one ear pierced, but even when Cody and Lucas pooled the cash in their wallets they could only come up with $59.37. With a sigh, Pat chipped in a $20 bill to cover the rest plus tip, and Cherie swiped up the money to store it in the cash register. She surveyed all six of them now standing closer to her counter, and sighed. “You all want to come back, don’t you?” They nodded, and Jeremy said meekly, “Yes ma’am, if that’s okay.” She sighed again but tossed an impatient “Come on, then,” over her shoulder as she strode towards the back. She led them to what appeared to be the largest of the individual rooms of the main part of the studio, and bade Jeremy to sit on the black-cushioned chair in the center. There was one smaller plastic chair to the left of it, and Pat pushed Jean towards it before he could make a beeline for the back of the room. Jean sat as Cherie told the rest of them, “I’m going to need some space. Go stand in the corner over there.” The four of them obediently shuffled over and leaned against the graffiti-covered wall.
Cherie asked the room, “What’s the finish?”
“Uhhhhh,” Lucas droned, and Jeremy looked to Jean, of all people. Cherie repeated the options to him. “Silver, gold, rose gold, or black.” Jean thought for a moment, studying Jeremy’s face.
Well, it was not going to be black. But which of the other three? He narrowed his eyes, considering. Spray-painted daffodils, the Trojan statue from their first walk through campus, and a yellow cardboard dog flashed through his mind. “Gold,” he said decidedly, and Cherie nodded in agreement. Jeremy smiled at Jean, but the expression was a bit tight.
“And which ear am I doing?”
“Which one’s the gay ear?” Derrick asked, and Lucas snickered. Jeremy twisted in his chair to give them a look, but Patrick doubled down on it. “If the shoe fits, my friend,” he said with a shrug. “Cody, make them stop,” Jeremy complained, but Cody was too busy laughing along with Lucas. Jeremy sighed and faced forward again. “I’ll just do the right ear. I normally sleep on my left side.” After a beat he added, “Please don’t tell them whether or not that’s the gay ear,” and Lucas and Cody’s laughter rang out again.
He held still when Cherie commanded, and then inspected the purple dot she marked on his right ear with the handheld mirror she passed him. He turned and tucked a stray curl back so Jean could see it, too. It looked perfectly centered, so Jean nodded.
Satisfied with her preparations, Cherie swiveled on her wheeled stool to rub hand sanitizer over her hands and pull on black latex gloves. At the snap they made against her wrists, Jeremy winced. “I like your nametag,” he said randomly, and Jean heard one of the boys snicker. Jeremy continued hurriedly, “You know, Jean here is French. You two might get along.”
“Ooooh, parlez vous français?” Cody said in a ridiculous high-pitched voice. Lucas laughed maniacally as Derrick replied, “Oui oui, monsieur dumbass.” Jean looked around to see which of the instruments in the room he could use to put himself out of his misery as quickly as possible, but Cherie laughed, too.
“I don’t speak French, actually. This is just what my grandpa used to call me. I don’t even pronounce it correctly, I know, but I still like it.” The entire room turned to look at Jean in anticipation.
He gave Cody and Derrick a flat look. “I’m not going to say it.” Various sounds of protest arose from their corner, but Cherie started fixing the gold stud onto a long, sharp instrument and Jean saw Jeremy’s face go positively ashen. When she looked up, Cherie saw it too.
“Are you afraid?” she asked bluntly, and Jeremy didn’t hesitate before nodding. The boys giggled from the corner. She kept her eyes on Jeremy, her expression unchanged. “That’s not a problem. It’s better if you look away, not close your eyes.” She dug her heels into the floor to wheel herself closer to Jeremy’s right side. “Would you prefer if I counted down, or just did it?”
Jeremy swallowed. “A countdown, please.”
Jean could practically feel the anxiety radiating off him with every breath. With a sigh, he shifted his chair to be parallel with Jeremy’s, and didn’t face him as he rested an elbow on Jeremy’s armrest. He cleared his throat. He could feel Cherie and Jeremy’s eyes on him but refused to look their way, and after another second he felt Jeremy’s hand curl under his arm to grip his bicep. His palm was warm and even sweatier than Jean expected, but Jean didn’t pull away. He ignored the whispered conversation happening in the back of the room.
“Ready?” Jeremy nodded with a tense set to his jaw. Jean grimaced at the crushing grip his captain had on his arm but didn’t let himself move an inch.
“Okay. Three, two, one,” Cherie said calmly, and Jean blinked in surprise. She had pushed the needle easily through Jeremy’s ear right after two. Jeremy blinked too, then loosed an exaggerated sigh of relief and said, “Dang, that actually wasn’t so bad! Do you do that trick with everyone?” His grip slackened, but he didn’t take his hand off Jean's arm.
“Only the wimps,” Cherie said matter-of-factly, and Jeremy laughed, a little giddy. The boys and Cody peeled off the wall to come admire the stud, and Jeremy only removed his hand from Jean when Cherie passed him the mirror again. Jean tried to be subtle about rubbing the now-sweaty inside of his arm against his shirt, but Jeremy was turning his head this way and that to see the piercing from different angles, completely oblivious. Cody gushed compliments, and Derrick said, “Yeah, gold was definitely the right choice.” Patrick clapped a hand on Jeremy's shoulder in approval.
Jeremy swung his legs over to hang them off the chair and face Jean with a beaming smile.
"What do you think?"
Jean considered the sparkle of the little earring in Jeremy’s lobe, bright against his flushed skin, and met Jeremy’s eyes. “It suits you,” he said simply. And it was true.
Somehow, Jeremy’s smile grew, and the stud twinkled like a miniature star as he kicked his feet.
As they all spilled back into the lobby a staggered chorus of “Thank you, Cherie!” arose from all five of the others. Pat already had his hand on the horizontal bar of the front door when Jean realized they had all turned to look expectantly at him again. He sighed and faced the counter.
“Merci, ma chérie.”
The sweet smile that curved Cherie’s lips seemed to soften her entire hardcore appearance, and she waved them all out amidst the chiming of the doorbell and the others’ whoops of triumph.

Here's part two of that last fundraiser post. Sorry it took so long... Remember, we've got two months until trump goes into office, and so those two months are extra important for people in Palestine. So right now is an important time to donate! If you were planning to donate and haven't gotten around to it, please consider doing so now! Here's some fundraisers I've donated to today - Please try and match at least one of my donations!
Maria and family - vetted - Maria's family of six was displaced last year on October 13th, and since then they have been displaced multiple times as well. Their family business and source of income was destroyed, and Maria's education as a pharmacy student was halted. Her mother cartilage patient who suffers from pressure in the vertebrae of the spine, and is in need of medical treatment. Her account(s) include @maria-gaza1, @maria-gaza4. They have $19,110 CAD raised out of their $30,000 goal
Lama and Mohammed - vetted - (not a super thorough vetting but I did some image reverse searching by myself and personally I think they are real) Lama and Mohammed are a couple who have been displaced after their house was bombed. Lama is currently pregnant and needs funds to help prepare for and support the unborn baby. They have $15,378 raised out of their $20,000 goal. Their account is @lamahourani14 (+ variants of this) for more information.
Eslam Gheelan and family - vetted - The fundraiser is for Eslam, her husband, and their two children (who are 10 months old & 5 years old respectively). Their house and places of work were destroyed and they became displaced, with no source of income. Their children are repeatedly struggling from disease due to pollution and malnutrition. They are raising money to support their cost of living, and to evacuate to Egypt. Eslam's accounts for more info: @eslamfa3 @eslamfamily06 - Right now they have $32,814 raised of their $50,000 goal
Ghazal Naseer and family + Fayez Al-Kafarna and family - vetted (#355) - Ghazal Naseer is 16 years old, and she and her siblings were seperated from their parents. She and her 5 year old brother are under the care of their 26 year old brother, Samar. The three of them then found the Al-Kafarna family, who had also been displaced from Northern Gaza, and the two groups are now travelling together. The Al-Kafarna family includes a Fayez Al-Kafarna, his wife, Amal, and their three children (7 years old, 4 years old + their baby daughter who is not even a year old yet). After the two families met, Fayez was injured in an Israeli missile strike, having taken a shrapnel to the head. He survived but had to get surgical treatment, and is still undergoing treatment and suffering greatly. Later on, Fayez and Amal's 4 year old was shot, and while he also lived, he is suffering as well, and in need of more medical treatment. For more information, @fay1z0-blog is run by Fayez. They have £11,301 raised out of their £25,000 goal
I accidently donated twice to that last one... that's £10 to match, I guess

here are the quick facts about axiz for those who want the lowdown but don't watch noah (go subscribe to wrestle universe!!)
this is katsuhiko nakajima, the "mad wolf"
he's a short king wild boy from a tumultuous childhood, and a genius at striking offense with a background in martial arts and MMA since he was literally 14 or something
it doesn't matter how tall you are, he's swingin
youtube
he's burned countless bridges before, one being his ex-tag team and now current tag team partner, mr. "i am noah" himself, go shiozaki
he's the tallest smol you'll ever meet with a real tragic past, loyal to a fault (and loves cute things like desserts and using cute emoticons, has 7 cats and a dog, and is unironically a kpop stan).
this is him in my favorite shirt of his that he likes to wear
anyway they were in a tag team called axiz and they used to be like this:
instagram
and like this:
anyway, the main thing is that they were homies.
they also had three specially produced photobooks with lore.
instagram
by the way, if you have twitter, give Hi5ame a follow; they are literally a godsend for the NOAH fandom.
as i mentioned, nakajima tends to burn bridges and the surrounding 50km radius. he turned on shiozaki when he believed that go had no "use" for him. in fact, nakajima turns on his partners when he feels they no longer rely on him.
he betrayed go to join kenoh's stable, kongo in august 2020. worth noting that the reason why he teamed with shiozaki in the first place was that he betrayed his ex-partner masa kitamiya earlier in 2018. anyway, no matter how kitamiya feels, nakajima is in kongo now.
at the time, it seemed like nakajima was the odd man out, the lone wolf of the group, but over 2 and half years, it appeared that the wolf had found his pack. there was even a haircut episode (iykyk)
in particular, he bonded with kenoh the most. nakajima and kenoh were rivals, but they had also become bros outside of just hating The Company and ragging on shiozaki
in a way, nakajima stumbled into what he needed the most. friends who understood him, who lived through the struggles of noah as he did. but the thing is, despite finally finding a faction that seemed to suit him and want him, nakajima couldn't be happy. not when he and kenoh's try at the tag belts failed. inadvertently rubbing salt in the wounds, kenoh's other tag belt endeavors with other members of kongo succeeded.
so, on may 4, 2023, during a 6-man tag between kongo (katsuhiko nakajima, kenoh, manabu soya) and noah's main unit team of kaito kiyomiya, yoshiki inamura, and go shiozaki, in what was go's comeback match after 8 months of being sidelined with injury, kongo utterly and thoroughly crushes the hope of the returning shiozaki.
further humiliating him in the ring, nakajima mocks shiozaki on the mic, wondering where the strong ace of noah's past went. before him is a weak and pathetic man.
and that's exactly why nakajima lifts up his hand to deliver the final blow...
youtube
...and offer to team up. because shiozaki needs nakajima. shiozaki would be nothing but dependent on nakajima. nakajima will be irreplaceable.
leaning on none other than shiozaki's surgically-repaired shoulder, nakajima poses, hearkening back to classic axiz. and shiozaki, a head taller than nakajima, nearly crumples to half his height, clinging to nakajima in a grateful and emotional embrace, so happy to have katsuhiko back.
(source: pro wrestling noah global twitter)
the thing about axiz's catchphrase is that they are "homies now and forever." and bless him and his loyalty, shiozaki took it to heart. in the two and half years axiz had broken up, go had never changed his twitter bio. he's always been repping AXIZ (and also bts lmao). he'd always been hoping that nakajima would return to his side.
(source: x)
and in the backstage, nakajima makes it clear, saying, "kongo doesn't need me anymore. kenoh doesn't need me anymore. i don't need him anymore either."
kenoh, of course, ain't happy. deeply hurt by this betrayal (and losing nakajima to go shiozaki!!! of all people!!!), he calls nakajima a "traitor." things are gonna get real spicy, especially as the fallout of axiz's reformation begins to settle.
if you're interested in what comes next:
subscribe to wrestle universe! things are just getting started!
#pro wrestling noah#axiz#katsuhiko nakajima#go shiozaki#*meta#*history#( this either will be the most toxic reunion )#( or the sweetest wholesome conclusion in noah history )#( either way i am hooked )

Are Psalm 83 and Isaiah 17 About to be Fulfilled? – Britt Gillette - [email protected]
Is the Current Israel-Hezbollah War a Fulfillment of Prophecy?
Two weeks ago, Israel pulled off what previously had only been imagined by Hollywood screenwriters and authors of best-selling spy thrillers. To initiate an offensive against Hezbollah, Israel detonated explosives hidden within the communication devices of thousands of the terror organization’s top operatives. In the first 48 hours, they killed at least 27 and injured thousands more. Since then, aerial strikes have taken out additional Hezbollah targets, including high profile individuals such as Ibrahim Aqil (long wanted by the U.S. for the 1983 attacks on the U.S. Embassy and Marine barracks in Beirut) and Hassan Nasrallah (the longtime leader of Hezbollah). As I write this, news reports confirm Israel has launched a targeted ground invasion of southern Lebanon named Operation Northern Arrows to uproot Hezbollah positions.
It's clear Israel is determined to destroy Hezbollah as a threat to Israel. For decades now, Iran has funded, trained, and equipped Hezbollah. Iran has expended a significant amount of time, energy, and financial resources building proxy forces and positioning them around Israel. Their aim is to threaten (and eventually destroy) Israel from a distance while maintaining plausible deniability when it comes to their direct involvement. Nevertheless, it’s no secret Hezbollah is an extension of Iran. It’s the crown jewel of Iranian proxy forces.
Right now, Israel is in the process of wiping out that prized proxy force. The big question is what will Iran do? Will they simply stand by and watch all their efforts training, funding, and equipping Hezbollah come to nothing? Will they watch the destruction of Hezbollah from a distance and not come to its aid? If not, then what will they do?
What Will Be Iran’s Response?
As it stands, I believe Iran has only four options it can pursue. Iran can:
1) Do Nothing
Iran could make the choice to simply do nothing. They can stand by and idly watch as Hezbollah is uprooted, dismantled, and destroyed. To do so, means Iran is willing to watch as years of meticulous planning and investment in Hezbollah as a military asset literally goes up in smoke. Is Iran willing to watch their proxy army get erased in short order all while they do nothing? It’s highly unlikely, but it can't be completely ruled out.
2) Engage in an All-Out Direct War with Israel
Iran could also make the choice to directly engage Israel in all-out war. I don't think they have the option of launching an attack as they did back in April unless they're willing to follow through with additional attacks and engage in all-out war. Based on statements from Israel's leadership, any attack from Iran will likely be viewed as a declaration of war. And given the timing of events (the U.S. election is just five weeks away) and the prospect of another four years of the Biden-Harris administration, Israel will likely use any opportunity it has in the near term to eliminate any threats – including Iran.
If Iran chooses this option, they need to be confident they can survive such a choice. The missile and drone attacks Iran launched back in April were a total failure. If reports are true, the Ayatollah is currently in hiding because he fears for his life following a series of surgical strikes on high profile Hezbollah, Hamas, and Iranian leaders in the region. Based on the failure of the April attack, Iran may fear the repercussions of a direct assault on Israel – especially if they’re incapable of striking a significant blow. It also begs the question – why build a proxy army if your first option is a direct strike? Given Iran’s past investment in its proxy forces (most notably Hezbollah), I think it’s unlikely they’ll engage in all-out direct war with Israel. However, this too cannot be ruled out.
3) Engage in an All-Out Proxy War with Israel
A third option available for Iran is to respond through its proxies by engaging in an all-out proxy war with Israel. I believe this is the most likely scenario. After all, why build up Hezbollah for decades only to see it destroyed without ever using its full capability? If reports are true, Hezbollah has over 150,000 rockets, missiles, and drones at its disposal – many of them hidden in deep underground caverns. No doubt, Israel has identified many of these installations. It's highly likely they will act swiftly to destroy as many of them as possible while Hezbollah struggles to reorganize following the decapitation of their leadership. With Hezbollah in disarray, Israel will move quickly to destroy them before they have a chance to rebuild their communications and backfill their leadership ranks. If Hezbollah is at all capable of acting and launching an all-out assault on Israel, now is the time. Iran will most likely give them a green light to do so.
4) Apply International Pressure on Israel
A fourth option available for Iran involves the application of extreme international pressure on Israel to call off its attack on Hezbollah positions. This fourth option could be pursued alone or in tandem with Option #2 or Option #3. Iran could even pursue Options #2, #3, and #4 simultaneously. While Israel's enemies constantly appeal to the international community hoping to apply pressure on Israel, Iran is unique in its ability to apply pressure guaranteed to make world leaders act. How? Just as its Houthi rebel proxies managed to close the Red Sea to all shipping traffic related to Israel and its allies, Iran is capable of closing the Strait of Hormuz – the most critical shipping lane in any body of water on the globe.
As the only way in or out of the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz sees 21% of global oil production flow through its waters on a daily basis. Moreover, this equates to 40% of all the world's exported petroleum. If Iran decides its best option is to appeal to the global community by closing the Strait of Hormuz until Israel ceases hostilities toward Hezbollah, then many world leaders will be desperate to find a resolution in order to restore the free flow of oil at market prices. Foremost among these world leaders will be U.S. President Joe Biden. His Vice President, Kamala Harris, is in a tight election race with only five weeks to go. A prolonged closure of the Persian Gulf would cause oil prices to skyrocket. That, in turn, would solidify the current global downturn into a global depression. Gasoline for most U.S. consumers would exceed $10 per gallon. It's hard to imagine such a scenario takes place and Harris doesn’t lose in a landslide. So faced with this prospect, President Biden would likely demand Israel cease its assault on Hezbollah.
Other world leaders, whether engaged in reelection battles or not, will also want a quick resolution to such a crisis. Energy is the lifeblood of all economic activity. Without it, nothing moves. Elevated oil prices will result in much higher prices for everyday essentials, and the most important of those is food. Hungry people spark revolutions. So every leader in the world will have a vested interest in seeing oil prices return to normal.
I’ll be very surprised if Iran chooses Option #1. I’ll be equally surprised if they don’t choose Option #4. My best guess is they’ll pursue Options #3 and #4. If they choose Option #3 – an all-out proxy war with Israel – then I believe Psalm 83 and Isaiah 17 have a high probability of being fulfilled.
Psalm 83 and Isaiah 17
How do Psalm 83 and Isaiah 17 factor in? It's possible they don't. Many people who have diligently studied the Bible believe Psalm 83 is not prophetic in nature. Others believe Isaiah 17 was fulfilled in the past, and it does not prophesy a future event. I believe differently. However, I’m not rigid in this position. I could be wrong. In fact, I hope and pray I’m wrong, because of what it means for the people of Syria and Israel.
However, this is why I believe these two passages in the Bible point to a coming conflict involving great devastation.
The consensus view says Psalm 83 is an imprecatory prayer and nothing more. I believe it’s a prayer and a prophecy. First, Asaph – the author of Psalm 83 – is named as a prophet in Matthew 13:35. Second, when you read verses 4 thru 8, they cite many of the same people groups standing against Israel today, and they say the same things today that Asaph cites in verses 4 and 12:
“‘Come,’” they say, “‘Let us wipe out Israel as a nation. We will destroy the very memory of its existence.’” Psalm 83:4 (NLT)
and
“For they said, “‘Let us seize for our own use these pasturelands of God!’” Psalm 83:12 (NLT)
Verses 9 thru 18 consist of a prayer asking God to take specific actions against Israel’s enemies.
So why do I believe Psalm 83 is more than a prayer, but a prophecy of things to come? Because God says He will answer this prayer. In verse 13, Asaph says:
“O my God, scatter them like tumbleweed, like chaff before the wind!” Psalm 83:13 (NLT)
In Isaiah 17:13, we read about God’s response:
“But though they thunder like breakers on a beach, God will silence them, and they will run away. They will flee like chaff scattered by the wind, like a tumbleweed whirling before a storm.” Isaiah 17:13 (NLT)
Because of this, I believe these two passages describe the same event. Both use the same words for “tumbleweed” (Strong’s 1534) and “wind” (Strong’s 7307). Also, both verses use different words for “chaff” (Strong’s 7179 and 4671), but the translated meaning of both words is the same. Therefore, it’s reasonable to conclude both verses describe the same event – Psalm 83:13 as a prayer and Isaiah 17:13 as God’s response to the prayer.
So if both passages describe the same event, what does Isaiah 17 point to? Isaiah 17 prophesies a future devastating event. Again, some people disagree. They say this has already happened, and maybe they’re right. But this is what I believe the scriptures point to.
Verse 1 says Damascus will disappear:
“This message came to me concerning Damascus: ‘Look, the city of Damascus will disappear! It will become a heap of ruins.’” Isaiah 17:1 (NLT)
Some believe this occurred in 732 B.C. when Assyria defeated the Arameans, captured Damascus, and carried away its people as slaves (2 Kings 16:9). However, this did not result in the complete destruction of Damascus. It continued to exist. In fact, Damascus is believed to be the longest continuously inhabited city on earth with a history dating back almost 5,000 years. So I believe this is a prophecy yet to be fulfilled.
As if this isn’t bad enough, Isaiah 17 paints a picture of widespread destruction in Israel as well:
“‘The fortified towns of Israel will also be destroyed, and the royal power of Damascus will end. All that remains of Syria will share the fate of Israel’s departed glory,’ declares the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. ‘In that day Israel’s glory will grow dim; its robust body will waste away. The whole land will look like a grainfield after the harvesters have gathered the grain. It will be desolate, like the fields in the valley of Rephaim after the harvest. Only a few of its people will be left, like stray olives left on a tree after the harvest. Only two or three remain in the highest branches, four or five scattered here and there on the limbs,’ declares the Lord, the God of Israel.” Isaiah 17:3-6 (NLT)
How could all this happen? We can only speculate. But it’s not difficult to envision a cornered Hezbollah firing thousands of missiles, rockets, and drones into Israel. If they overwhelm the Iron Dome defense system or if a weapon of mass destruction makes it through, Israel will respond with overwhelming force – quite possibly using nuclear weapons. One of the most likely targets? Damascus – a city long known for harboring terrorist leaders.
Where Will This Lead?
So what is the likely end result of the events we're seeing play out in Israel and Lebanon right now? Whether or not Psalm 83 or Isaiah 17 play into this, I believe once the dust settles from this current conflict, we will see the stage set for the events prophesied in Ezekiel chapters 38 and 39. These chapters foretell a future surprise invasion of Israel by a coalition of nations involving Russia, Iran, Turkey, and a number of other nations. The Bible is clear this invasion will come against the modern day nation of Israel in the last days. It also clearly states Israel will be a land of unwalled villages, living in a state of tranquil peace (Ezekiel 38:11). Israel is currently not in such a state. However, if Israel pursues the goal of destroying Hamas, Hezbollah, and all the enemies on its border – all those enemies that pose an existential threat at the current moment – then we could see Israel end up in such a state of tranquility (at least for a time).
What Happens Between Now and Then?
In the meantime, what happens between now and then? I don't know. I'm not a prophet. However, I know what the Bible says. Israel as a nation state will not be destroyed (Amos 9:14-15). Between now and the events of Ezekiel 38-39, something has to take place in order to create the state of peace Israel will be living in prior to the Gog of Magog invasion. It's quite possible the events we're witnessing right now will result in the destruction of Hezbollah, Hamas, and other terrorist organizations committed to the destruction of Israel. If Israel wipes out these threats, they may well find themselves in the state of peace outlined in Ezekiel 38-39.
If Psalm 83 and Isaiah 17 are yet-to-be-fulfilled prophecies, then it's highly likely we’ll see them fulfilled in the very near future as this conflict unfolds. Again, I hope I'm wrong. To be right means catastrophic war. It means the destruction of Damascus. It means devastation to a large part of northern Israel. It means an entire world in turmoil.
But it also means Jesus is coming. Because no matter what happens, the world is currently setting the stage for the seven-year Tribulation and the Second Coming of Jesus Christ at the end of that Tribulation. That means the rapture of the church (which I believe the Bible teaches will come before the Tribulation) will occur even sooner. In other words, Jesus could return at any moment. Make sure you’re prepared!

The mysterious Lana Del Rey is behind the song of the year, Video Games. Does it matter who pulls her strings?
Even by the breakneck standards of the digital world, Lana Del Rey’s year has been a fast one. The 24-year-old New Yorker, real name Lizzy Grant, started generating interest in Britain in the spring, when her song Video Games and, more important, the video for it that she subsequently posted on YouTube began to create a stir. In the five months that have followed, Grant’s pseudonym has been dropped so many times, and the hype/mythology machine stoked so vigorously, that, inevitably, a backlash has begun. So far, so virally predictable. What is refreshing — or plain insane, depending on your viewpoint — is that a backlash against the original backlash is now rapidly gaining support. And what is easy to forget, amid all the hubbub, is that Video Games is quite simply the song of the year. Yes, it’s that good.
Back to the chatter, though, for it is deafening. Every constituency involved is manning the barricades. Fans acclaim Grant as one of the best new singers of her generation. Detractors, meanwhile, post poison about her rich dad, self-mythologising back story, mysteriously deleted debut album and suspiciously voluptuous lips, the last presumed by the doubters to be surgically enhanced. (Grant has, surely unwisely, entered the debate herself, responding on one website: “Right — I didnt get surgery whoever the f*** u are — i didnt even have a house to live in let alone $ to f*** w my face.”) Behind the scenes are management, label executives and publicists whose air of micromanaging secrecy communicates not confidence, but anxiety. That’s a pretty rich, not to say putrid, brew. 'I haven’t listened to anything new for 10 years, because, you know, I like what I like'
Yet, and it is important to remember this, the main bullet points of the marketing plot are working with a smoothness beyond the wildest dreams of any team tasked with launching a new artist. Radio is hugely supportive (Video Games is predicted to rise to the Radio 1 A-list this week); other influential tastemakers are jumping on board. What this at once ideal and fractious scenario says about the new lines of communication between artist and fan, and the obstacles that — the democracy and egalitarianism of the web notwithstanding — are placed in the way of them, is about much more than Video Games or Lizzy Grant.
She just happens to be the most recent and glaring example of this new commercial culture. She also happens to be very pretty. Does that make her a fair target? Well, let’s ask her.
Sitting in a London hotel room, her fake-nailed fingers clamping a succession of cigarettes, the singer is easily identifiable as the retro femme fatale who stares expressionlessly at the camera in Video Games, yet utterly different: one minute hard-eyed and verbally robotic (ending some answers with an abrupt, and terminating, “Um, yeah), the next seemingly unsure of herself, inarticulate or unedited. Some of her replies are so hair-raisingly, well, wrong, almost Miss World-like, you wonder why she was ever let loose with an interviewer.
Talking about the failure of her debut album, and her musical influences, she says: “When I started listening to people I consider to be musical icons, my tastes were sort of confirmed in my own mind. And that’s why, you know, even though nothing good ever happened, I was deterred from trying to be a noteworthy artist. But I wasn’t deterred from making things that I thought were beautiful. In fact, I haven’t listened to anything new for 10 years, because, you know, I like what I like. I mean, sometimes I find things that strike me, but in general I have names — I like, you know, Jeff Buckley, he was a show stopper. When I see footage of him live, I just think, ‘He’s unbeatable.’ Kurt Cobain, just his face alone was, like, enough. He didn’t even have to sing, his presence was scary, sick. Elvis, Frank — and Bob Dylan.”
Then there are glimpses of another, much clearer and less bewildered or regal person, as when she returns, again, to the shelving of her first album. Overseen by the Paul McCartney and Regina Spektor producer David Kahne, and either self-titled or called Nevada (the internet is unclear on this), the album was preceded by a well-received EP in late 2008. A few tracks can still be found online, and songs such as Kill Kill, Kinda Outta Luck and, especially, the blowsy, strings-drenched pop-noir of Yayo are audibly the work of the same artist you hear on Video Games and its double A-side, Blue Jeans: woozy, nostalgic odes to glamour with a murky underside, to love on the wrong side of the tracks, and as visually evocative as anything seen on Grant’s own videos, which feature grainy Super 8 footage spliced with television news snippets, the Stars and Stripes swaying in the wind, and the singer herself, dressed in vintage clothes. If these songs are anything to go by, it must have been a remarkable record. So, presumably, the shelving of the project (and Grant’s management seem determined to sit on it, preferring to big up her new material) must have been devastating. And have made her wary?
“Oh, I’m wary,” Grant agrees. “Incredibly wary. But I’m not jaded. I’m nervous, definitely — probably more than most people you might meet this year. I don’t think I’ve really left anything [behind], stylistically; my new songs are still autobiographical and cinematic. Having the record just shelved for two years, that’s difficult for anyone, especially when you’re younger and you make it with a famous producer, which David was.
“It was an exciting time and, making the record I thought... it’s not that I wanted anything to be larger than life, I just thought, ‘Well, here I am, I’m on my way to not having to do anything else in life.’
And to have absolutely no reaction, and no recognition, and no nothing, after you make a record that you think is perfect, you definitely start to think, ‘Well, good try, but you’d better go find something else to do that works.’ Because, if you keep chasing something that isn’t working, you’ll drive yourself insane.”
The precise reason the album was shelved is as much a mystery as why anybody around Grant felt it was okay for her to enter the publicity fray with stories such as her time spent living in a New Jersey trailer park (albeit, apparently, an unusually bohemian one). Her father is a multimillionaire domain-name entrepreneur and philanthropist. Then there is the effort to market her as an indie artist — her new releases are coming out on a small label, Stranger Records — when even cursory research reveals that she has major-label dollars behind her, and that she is working with a small army of the usual bespoke-songwriter suspects.
Such nervousness and sleight-of-hand tactics are baffling — who cares if she’s not totally “authentic” (whatever that means) or bears traces of manufacture? Yet neither Grant nor her handlers are forthcoming about details they consider awkward — and they are a little too energetic with the opposite, with results that are what would be politely described as bearing signs of embellishment. (I’d say enhancement, but let’s not go there.)
Her team cannot, however, be solely blamed for such distractions, although these seem at best unnecessary and at worst counterproductive. We are all culpable, and perhaps need to refocus on what really matters — and, for starters, ignore the dafter end of the hype and airbrushing. You sense that Grant is becoming aware of the pitfalls of her current situation. Talking about some of the comments posted beneath her videos, she says: “Obviously, you’re not going to enjoy ones like ‘Oh, look at the hype’ and ‘This will all be over before it begins’.” Then, forlornly, she adds: “If I could do it over, I think I would just post the song.” Ah, “just” the song.
Well, perhaps that’s the point. Listen to Video Games’s incredible bridge, on which, as harp and piano ascend, the singer captures the rapture/wistfulness one-two of love, singing, almost sighing, “It’s you, it’s you, it’s all for you”, then tell me you’re still bothered by her lips or her parentage. It will say far more about you than about Lizzy Grant if you are.

Flying taxi's in the UK draws closer with the Future of Flight action plan
Flying taxis, crime-fighting drones and critical 999 care deliveries could all be a reality by 2030 thanks to the government and industry’s joint Future of Flight action plan, announced by the Department for Transport (DfT) today (18th March 2024). Setting out a roadmap for drones and novel electric aircraft in the UK, the plan details how technology once confined to the realm of sci-fi could transform our skies, with studies estimating drone technology could boost the UK economy by £45 billion by the end of the decade. It details plans for the first piloted flying taxi flight by 2026 and regular services by 2028, regular drone deliveries across our skies by 2027 and demos of autonomous flying taxis without pilots on board by 2030 – transforming how people and goods are transported. Aviation and Technology Minister, Anthony Browne, said: Cutting-edge battery technology will revolutionise transport as we know it – this plan will make sure we have the infrastructure and regulation in place to make it a reality. From flying taxis to emergency service drones, we’re making sure the UK is at the forefront of this dramatic shift in transportation – improving people’s lives and boosting the economy. The plan was unveiled on the same day the minister is due to visit Vertical Aerospace in Bristol – one of the UK companies making flying taxis and at the cutting edge of innovation in aviation. These greener, quieter flying taxis are already undergoing the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) authorisation process and have been made possible thanks to rapid advances in battery technology, meaning they are light enough to stay in the air and powerful enough to cover the distances needed. Some of the other actions set out in the plan include: - allowing drones to fly beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) so that the sector can grow without limiting the skies for other aircraft - breathing life into smaller aerodromes by setting out how they can operate as vertiports for electric aircraft that take off vertically (sometimes known as electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft) - developing standards to improve security for drones to boost public safety - engaging communities and local authorities so that they can enjoy the economic and social benefits of these technologies Image via Vertical Aerospace First imagined in the Flightpath to the Future in 2022, this joint plan between industry and government sets out the strategic direction of the sector over the next 5 years, striking a balance between innovation, security, safety and cutting emissions. The benefits of this new technology are already being seen in the UK. West Midlands Police uses drones to tackle violent crime and antisocial behaviour. In July 2023, a drone team was deployed, successfully identifying 2 offenders and another suspect at a speed and distance that would have taken ground officers hours to track down. Drones are also helping frontline NHS staff save lives. For 6 months between October 2022 and March 2023, the UK drone service provider Skyfarer partnered with University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust and Medical Logistics UK to test drones to deliver surgical implants and pathology samples between sites. In one case, drones reliably helped cut delivery times of surgical implants between Coventry and Rugby hospitals from up to an hour to just 18 minutes – a 70% decrease. The Future of Flight action plan contains measures to make drone applications and assessments easier by creating new and simple digital platforms that operators can use – ensuring companies and public services are no longer shackled by red tape and get drones up and flying quicker. It will also enable the development of vertiports – mini-airports for drones and electric aircraft that take off vertically – by developing certification standards and reviewing the use of existing infrastructure to deliver at speed, boost safety and security and put the passenger first. Industry partners will also undertake multiple industry-leading trials to explore new ways to operate drones beyond the visual line of sight and demonstrate electric aircraft – keeping accidents to a minimum and making the most of technological advances. This could include finding and repairing faults quicker on our railways with fewer delays and cancellations for train passengers, providing new connections across the UK and using technology to help our emergency services. The Future of Flight action plan comes ahead of the fifth meeting of the Future of Flight Industry Group, a joint force established in February 2023 for government and industry leaders to tackle the biggest challenges facing the sector and set ambitious goals as emerging aviation technologies become more commonplace. Duncan Walker, Chief Executive of Skyports and Chairman of the Future of Flight Industry Group, said: The UK is home to one of the world’s most important aerospace industries and is in an ideal position to be a pioneer in the next era of aviation. The government and industry have a joint commitment to support the development, industrialisation and introduction of new aviation technologies. Continued collaboration will ensure that we capitalise on the significant domestic and international market opportunities presented by the future of flight. By supporting research and development in electric aircraft and drones, and with the help of key partners like the CAA, the action plan aims to usher in a new era of eco-friendly aviation and boost the economy with new investments, ensuring the UK captures the full potential of this emerging global industry as a force for good and a driver of growth. Sophie O’Sullivan, Head of Future Safety and Innovation at the UK Civil Aviation Authority, said: Aviation stands on the cusp of its next, potentially biggest, revolution since the invention of the jet engine. Drones, eVTOL and other different vehicles have the potential to change transportation options forever. We welcome the firm direction the government’s Future of Flight action plan provides for the industry as it continues to innovate. Our role in this bright future of aviation will be enabling technological advances and providing regulatory support while ensuring that all forms of new aviation technology enjoy the same high safety standards as traditional aviation. Anne-Lise Scaillierez, CEO of UK drone trade association ARPAS-UK, said: Drones help professional teams capture data from the sky in a safer, cheaper, smarter and greener way and, in the future, they will help transport cargo and people. ARPAS-UK and the industry are looking forward to actively and collectively implementing the actions in the plan so that we can accelerate the safe use of drones by end-user industries. We thank the DfT, CAA and all involved parties for making it happen. Not only is the Future of Flight action plan a testament to the government’s commitment to advancing aviation technologies, but it gives industry the confidence to continue breaking barriers in the sector. Vertical Aerospace, whose pioneering innovation in electric vertical take-off aircraft is creating a cleaner, quieter way to travel, is just one of several UK-based manufacturers that will benefit from the plan. Stephen Fitzpatrick, Founder and CEO, Vertical Aerospace, said: The UK has a long heritage in aerospace and the publication of this plan sets out how we will lead the next revolution of flight. With government and business working together, we can unleash the huge economic, environmental, and social benefits of zero emissions flight globally. Vertical is hugely proud to be at the forefront of leading this new chapter. Read the full article

Aegon is snickering, though not in a mean way, never in a mean way. Aemond is watching you. He does this constantly; you can feel his eyes—river water, otherworldly atmosphere—on you all the time, you can see him on the periphery of your vision. But when you glance at Aemond, he looks away.
I love you Aeg my bb, but between your gigglefits and the man STALKERWATCHING me and the possible pregnancy I think I’d pull a Mario and try to flush myself down the cup like it’s a magical green pipe to a mystical land.
Aemond is staring a little extra hard today.
Not hard enough to talk to me tho, you shitbucket 😭
Jace putts next. He misses the ball twice. On the third try, he hits it into a nearby pond. Golden koi fish scatter beneath the rippling sheen of the water.
Listen I don’t care for him but… I can give him some grace (or even some credit) that he’s managing to strike that shit third attempt when he’s higher than willy wonka 😭😭😭
“Get your own account,” Aemond snaps at Aegon. “I think you can afford it.” “Bruh, that’s not the point! I don’t know where I left off in Grey’s Anatomy!”
I’m just saying the most accurate sibling dynamic would be their only fistfight being over netflix and not like… horrific unresolved childhood trauma
You can only feel the weight of Aemond’s half-fascinated, half-resentful gaze on you.
Listen, as a disabled person myself when I say I’m about to exploit a weakness to beat this lanky man’s ass—
You steal a glimpse of Aemond—black shirt and black sunglasses, white shorts, Adidas sneakers—and he turns away, pretending to pick dirt off his golf ball.
Nevermind he’s too fucking stunted for me to do it. Actually thirteen years old 😭
“Watch it, cyclops.” Jace points to his own stitches, bruises, surgically replaced teeth. “I let you have this one. Now we’re even. But next time I won’t be so charitable.” “You’re not even,” Aegon tells Jace, abruptly severe. He whips off his aviator sunglasses, crouches over Jace, glaring and thunderous like a storm. Baela observes this warily. “Not even close.” Jace is intrigued. “No?” “No. Your face will heal.” Then Aegon pokes him in the jaw and Jace screams, tears slithering down his puffy, mottled cheeks. Cregan yanks Aegon away before Baela can scratch his eyes out. Criston repossesses Aegon’s blue raspberry Slush Puppie as punishment. Luke wins the game, five under par.
Many thoughts, so many thoughts.
1. Jace stays belonging w Shelby, they can be united shitheads.
2. Uh… Aegon being a vindictive shit should not be… as hot as it is.
3. The emotional complexity that I have absolutely no doubts that Aegon blames himself for what happened to Aemond, but it’s easier to lash out at Jace around every turn than to apologize for his part in it.
Now Criston watches Jace with his arms crossed over his chest, his dark eyes wounded and anxious, his shoulders slumped beneath the weight of what he believes is failure.
Criston you are literally like. Among the only functional people in this entire group. And their families. You’re doing fine babygirl 😭
A tattoo artist is inking a goldfinch, New Jersey’s state bird, to the top of Jace’s right foot.
He uh… He gon’ wake up one week and freak out over a tattoo he doesn’t remember getting? I mean more than usual considering all the drugs he does 😭
Aegon is typing WhatsApp messages—mostly emojis, from what you can see—to Miley Cyrus.
So Aegon both dresses and sends messages the way I do 😭 time for us to get friends with advanced benefits’d and communicate via modern hieroglyphics
because sooner or later your time with Comet will be over and you’ll only ever hear him again through Spotify songs and YouTube clips from before the accident
Please I’m not ready to lose these gaudy bitches 😭 I love my disaster family
You’re wearing a short seafoam green dress, gold earrings and sandals, and an eerily vacuous expression.
ROM THE VACUOUS SPIDER APPROACHES— ahem, I mean-
Girlie you were supposed to be coming here to help them not to end up needing the help 😭😭😭
One of the elevators dings and opens. A man lumbers out, towering, broad, monstrous. You gape up at him: brown threadbare coat, heavy boots, unruly dark beard, grey eyes like a bleak winter sky. There is a miasma that colors the air around him with smoke and alcohol, sweat and earth.
He one of them “public transport hazard” type ass people, huh?
He smiles: sharp canine teeth yellowed by nicotine, glinting eyes like silver coins. “Cregan Stark.”
I appreciate the lupine vibes that daddy Stark gives off. Sells the “Stark” thing without having to be overt with it.
His eyes go wide. The blood drains from his face. And Cregan—immovable, inscrutable, unflappable Cregan—shrinks until he is a child again.
Cregan I’m so sorry bb 😭
You can’t stop him. How could you stop him? Faster than you can think, he has crossed the space between you and entombed Cregan in a stifling embrace. Cregan stands paralyzed, his eyes shifting, searching for escape. Tentatively, appeasingly, his hands slowly rise to hug the man in return.
I’M SORRY BB
He pushes between Cregan and the giant, terrifying, wrathful. The man dwarfs him. Criston doesn’t seem to know it.
GO CRISTON GO! WHERE ARE MY FUCKING POMPOMS—
You try to apologize to Cregan, but he isn’t listening to you. He’s listening to Aemond. Aemond is speaking to him, low and calm, too quietly for you to hear. “I’m okay,” Cregan says unsteadily. “I’m fine.” “It’s alright if you’re not,” Aemond tells him.
Of course you’re gonna give the patience to others that you won’t yourself you lovable fucking DUMBASS—
But also Cregan bb I’m so sorry I love you you deserve the best out of all of these boys 😭
Aegon replies as he kicks off his Crocs: “Did I ask, succubus?” He crawls into the bed, throws an arm casually across your waist, rests his head on your belly as your fingers thread through his chaotic blond hair, fond and tender.
I love you, you dramatic, colorful bitch 😭
He burrows into you, into your softness and your warmth and your truth and your mysteries. Sometimes you feel like you’ll give until he falls into you like a trapdoor, the bones of his hands tangling around your spine, his blood vessels spilling into all of your rage-scarlet cavities, hollows of the flesh, hollows of the soul. “You’re sad.”
So. Once again. Might I go on a THESIS ABOUT HOW GOOD YOU ARE WITH WORDS??? HUH??? ABSOLUTELY FUCKING PHENOMENAL AND EVOCATIVE??? HOW IT’S SO EXPRESSIVE BUT NOT OVERLY VERBOSE?????? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA??????????????????
Aegon doesn’t argue with you, doesn’t try to defend himself, doesn’t make promises both of you know he could never keep. He only lays his head down on your belly again and pulls himself closer to you, closer, closer, melting into your melancholy, dissolving into dreams.
“I was eleven when he broke my arm. Thirteen when he cracked my skull for the first time. Then I got big enough to hurt him back.”
Man the others been dealing with neglect (mood) and this guy has been FIGHTING FOR HIS LIFE 😭 Cregan please I’m so sorry you got stuck with diva’s you deserve a small loan of a billion dollars and an immediate retirement.
Your words are soft like a whisper, like gentle hands. “Cregan, I’m so sorry.”
BACK TO MY THESIS—
“I’ll give it a try. If you recommend it.” Cregan lights a cigarette and takes a drag. Criston glances over and then pretends he didn’t notice. “I have a daughter,” Cregan says; and you can’t stop the shock from hitting your face like a fist. He smiles faintly, wistfully.
I’m gonna simp—
You gesture to the crashing waves and say to Cregan: “If Aegon gets attacked by a shark, will you jump in and punch it or something please?” Cregan chuckles. “Yeah. That’s my main job here, I think. Stopping people from dying.” And then, seriously: “Thank you.” “Don’t thank me. I haven’t done anything that warrants it.” “No. Really.” Cregan reaches out, takes your uninjured hand, squeezes it briefly before releasing you. “Thank you, Stargirl.” Then he stands and walks to the water’s edge, letting the surf rush up over his ankles, for just a moment feeling nothing on his shoulders but the sunlight.
The way I want nothing but the best for this man and his shark punching, bear wrestling, wolf wrangling ways—
When Aemond speaks, there is perhaps a hint of envy, green like leaves of poison, gleaming like snakeskin. “What were you and Cregan talking about?”
AS IF YOU HAVE THE RIGHT MY GOOD BITCH—
“Freddie was very, very unplanned. The mother was a nobody, a rebound. And a lot of people assumed she did it on purpose to try to keep Louis. Or to get eighteen years of a luxury lifestyle out of him. Or to just get fame in general. Personally, I believe it was all of the above.”
It’s the balcony all over again I’m going to commit minecraft 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
And the look that crosses Aemond’s face, the look: caustic, incredulous, night-dark, self-loathing. “Are you insane? Have you met me? I terrify kids. And I should, but not just because of the eye and the scar. What the hell do I know about being a decent father? What do I know about being a decent anything? I’d have no idea where to start. I’d fuck it up even if I tried desperately not to. I’d end up with kids like Aegon: addicts who hate themselves, people who are irrevocably lost.”
“They love who I was,” Aemond says. “Not who I am now. And that’s easy to do. They don’t have to look at me.”
(black fringe bangs intensifying)
“How the hell would I know? Probably.” He holds up a pair of red, white, and blue bikini bottoms that say Firecracker across the ass. “You think my dad would mind if you sent her these?” Criston is blushing. “Aegon, stop.” “You could get her a bikini top too. Oh look, that one over there is red, it matches. And it says MILF across the tits. So that’s pertinent.” “Stop!” Criston cries, distressed, and flees the store.
Aegon I think you just committed a war crime against your totally-not-father.
At the ordering counter, Jace—slightly less bruised and swollen today, and thus in better spirits—taunts Aegon: “Are you sure you need all that bread? You’re going to be wearing a muumuu on stage by the time we get to the Midwest.” “You know, just because you said that, now I’m going to get two hoagies…”
GOOD FOR YOU BABY EAT AS MUCH AS YOU WANT YOU’RE FUCKING BEAUTIFUL 😭
It’s surprisingly difficult to piss on a tiny stick of doom,
Mood, bbgirl 😭
“Good luck with that, Malibu Barbie. Nobody even knows I exist.” “Stay away from Aemond,” she says again, trembling with her futile bleach-blond rage. “We’re meant to be together. We have so much history.” “And yet no future.” You smile sweetly, breeze past her, step on one of her perfectly pedicured feet with a thoroughly unpretentious flip flop. By the time you return to them, the band is almost ready to leave Wawa.
GOD YOU KNOW THAT FELT GOOD. THE ABSOLUTE MIC DROP— but this is definitely not going to end here, something bad is gonna come of it I just know.
You’re not hungry, but Aegon coaxes you into taking a few bites from his hoagie.
Babygirl I LOOOOOOOOOOOVE YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
He’s singing something very quietly, so quietly it takes you a while to recognize it. It’s not even a Comet Donati song. It’s Through The Dark.
Babygirl you make me wanna cry,,,,,,,,,,
“What am I going to do?” you whisper, scalding tears brimming in your eyes, shivering hands settling on your belly. In a few months, you’ll be showing. “What the hell am I going to do?”
Something delightfully dramatic, I have no doubts 😌
God everything is reaching it's PEAK OF CHAOS AND SUFFERING RIGHT NOW AND I'M LIVING BUT ALSO SUFFERING FOR IT. IT'S PHENOMENAL.

Minimally Invasive Magic: How Absorbable Nasal Implant Devices Market is Transforming Rhinoplasty
Introduction
The healthcare industry is constantly evolving, with innovative technologies and medical devices transforming the way we approach various medical procedures. One such area of advancement is in the field of rhinoplasty, where absorbable nasal implant devices have been gaining prominence. These devices have emerged as a game-changer in the world of nasal aesthetics, offering safer, more efficient, and minimally invasive solutions. In this article, we will explore the Absorbable Nasal Implant Devices Market, its growth potential, and the impact it has on the field of rhinoplasty.
Understanding Absorbable Nasal Implant Devices
Absorbable nasal implant devices are medical implants designed to enhance nasal aesthetics and function. They are typically made from biocompatible materials, such as absorbable polymers, which are safe for implantation in the human body. These implants are used to address a variety of nasal concerns, including nasal bridge augmentation, dorsal hump correction, and overall nose reshaping.
Market Growth and Potential
The Absorbable Nasal Implant Devices Market has been witnessing significant growth in recent years, driven by several factors. One of the primary drivers is the growing demand for minimally invasive cosmetic procedures. Patients are increasingly seeking less invasive alternatives to traditional rhinoplasty, which often involves surgery and extended recovery times. Absorbable nasal implant devices offer a non-surgical, office-based option for individuals looking to improve their nasal aesthetics.
Moreover, the rise in awareness of facial aesthetics and the influence of social media on beauty standards have contributed to the market's growth. People are now more conscious of their appearance and are willing to explore options that allow them to enhance their facial features, including the nose.
Benefits of Absorbable Nasal Implant Devices
1. Minimally Invasive: Unlike traditional rhinoplasty, which involves surgical incisions and anesthesia, absorbable nasal implant procedures are minimally invasive. This means shorter recovery times, reduced pain, and fewer post-operative complications.
2. Customizable Results: Absorbable nasal implant devices can be tailored to each patient's specific needs. The surgeon can adjust the implant's size and shape to achieve the desired aesthetic outcome, providing a more natural look.
3. Reversible: One of the most significant advantages of absorbable nasal implant devices is that the results are reversible. If a patient is unsatisfied with the outcome, the implant can be easily removed or replaced, giving them more control over their appearance.
4. Reduced Downtime: Patients can return to their daily activities shortly after the procedure, making it a convenient option for those with busy lifestyles.
Market Challenges
While the Absorbable Nasal Implant Devices Market offers numerous benefits, it is not without its challenges. Some of these challenges include:
1. Regulatory Approvals: As with any medical device, regulatory approvals and safety considerations are crucial. Ensuring the safety and efficacy of these implants is a priority.
2. Cost: The cost of absorbable nasal implant procedures can be a barrier for some patients, as it may not be covered by insurance.
3. Education: Both patients and healthcare providers need to be educated about the benefits and limitations of these devices to make informed decisions.
Conclusion
The Absorbable Nasal Implant Devices Market is set to continue its growth trajectory, driven by the demand for minimally invasive cosmetic procedures and changing beauty standards. With their numerous advantages, these devices offer a viable alternative to traditional rhinoplasty, making them an attractive option for individuals seeking nasal enhancement.
However, it is essential to strike a balance between innovation and safety in this evolving market. Regulatory oversight and education are crucial to ensure that patients receive the best possible outcomes while minimizing risks. As technology and research in this field advance, absorbable nasal implant devices have the potential to revolutionize rhinoplasty and set new standards for the future of nasal aesthetics.

What is Facetíte and Ultherapy? In the world of non-surgical facial rejuvenation, Facetíte and Ultherapy are names that resonate with expertise, innovation, and aesthetic enhancement. Below, we'll delve into the essential insights of these two treatment modalities, understanding their mechanisms, benefits, and potential risks. Overview of Facetíte What is Facetíte? Facetíte is a cutting-edge, minimally invasive procedure designed to tighten and contour the face and neck. Leveraging radiofrequency technology, it offers a non-surgical alternative to traditional facelifts. How does Facetíte work? Facetíte operates by utilizing radiofrequency energy to heat the subdermal layers of the skin. This heat prompts collagen production and tightens the skin. The result is a more youthful and refreshed appearance. What are the benefits of Facetíte? Effectiveness: Targets deep wrinkles and sagging skin. Non-invasive: No incisions or scars. Quick Recovery: Minimal downtime post-procedure. Natural Results: Offers a natural-looking facelift effect. What are the risks of Facetíte? Like all medical procedures, Facetíte comes with potential risks, including: Temporary swelling or bruising. Sensitivity or numbness. Rare complications such as burns or changes in skin pigmentation. It is crucial to consult with a qualified medical professional to understand if Facetíte is suitable for you. Overview of Ultherapy What is Ultherapy? Unlike Facetíte, Ultherapy utilizes ultrasound energy to lift and tighten the skin. It is a non-invasive treatment known for its efficacy in improving fine lines and wrinkles. How does Ultherapy work? Ultherapy works by directing focused ultrasound energy to various depths, triggering a natural regenerative response that stimulates collagen growth. What are the benefits of Ultherapy? Non-Invasive: No needles, no incisions. Versatility: Can be used on the face, neck, and décolletage. Precision: Targeted treatment for specific areas. Gradual Improvement: Results develop over time for a natural transition. What are the risks of Ultherapy? The risks associated with Ultherapy are relatively low but may include: Temporary redness or swelling. Tenderness or tingling sensation. Rare instances of temporary nerve injury. Again, consultation with a medical expert is paramount to evaluate suitability and potential risks. FAQs Q: How long do the effects of Facetíte and Ultherapy last? A: Typically, results last around 1-2 years, varying with individual skin types and lifestyles. Q: Are there any side effects? A: Side effects are generally mild and temporary, but it's essential to discuss this with your healthcare provider. Q: Which treatment is more painful? A: Pain tolerance varies, but both procedures are usually tolerated well with appropriate pain management. Navigating the world of non-surgical facelift treatments is an exciting journey toward revitalized appearance and confidence. The next section will further illuminate the subject by contrasting Facetíte and Ultherapy, unraveling their similarities and highlighting what sets them apart. Facetíte vs. Ultherapy: A Comparison As we step into the realm of non-surgical facelift treatments, the comparison between Facetíte and Ultherapy takes center stage. Both these cutting-edge procedures offer the allure of renewed youthfulness and enhanced confidence, but they do so through distinct approaches. In this section, we'll delve into the striking similarities and nuanced differences that set Facetíte and Ultherapy apart. Similarities between Facetíte and Ultherapy Both are non-surgical facelift treatments. Facetíte and Ultherapy share a common ground as non-surgical solutions for facial rejuvenation. In an era where individuals seek effective results without the downtime of surgery, both treatments stand out as alternatives that promise visible improvements without incisions. Both can improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as laxity and sagging skin.
One of the prime motivations behind pursuing non-surgical facelift treatments is the desire to combat the signs of aging. Facetíte and Ultherapy target this shared goal by addressing fine lines, wrinkles, and the loosening of skin, creating a smoother and more youthful appearance. Both are relatively safe and effective treatments. Safety and efficacy are paramount considerations in any cosmetic procedure. Both Facetíte and Ultherapy have earned their place as reputable treatments backed by clinical studies and patient testimonials, giving individuals confidence in their choices. Differences between Facetíte and Ultherapy Facetíte uses radiofrequency energy, while Ultherapy uses ultrasound energy. Facetíte harnesses the power of radiofrequency energy to stimulate collagen production beneath the skin's surface. Ultherapy, on the other hand, employs focused ultrasound energy to achieve similar results. These distinct energy sources drive collagen renewal, albeit through different mechanisms. Facetíte is typically more effective for treating deep wrinkles and sagging skin, while Ultherapy is better for lifting and tightening the skin. The treatment objectives of Facetíte and Ultherapy diverge when it comes to addressing specific concerns. Facetíte's proficiency in tackling deep wrinkles and addressing sagging skin makes it a favored choice for individuals with pronounced signs of aging. On the flip side, Ultherapy specializes in skin tightening and lifting, making it a preferred option for those seeking a more lifted appearance. Facetíte is a more invasive treatment than Ultherapy. While both treatments are minimally invasive compared to surgical alternatives, Facetíte leans slightly more towards invasiveness due to its radiofrequency energy application. This difference underscores the need for a thorough consultation with a medical professional to determine the best fit for an individual's needs. FAQs Q: Which treatment provides quicker results? A: Facetíte typically yields more immediate results, while Ultherapy's effects tend to become noticeable over a few months. Q: Can these treatments be combined? A: Depending on your individual goals and skin condition, a combination of both treatments might be suggested by a medical professional. Q: How long does each treatment session last? A: Facetíte sessions usually range from 30 to 60 minutes, while Ultherapy sessions can be completed in about 60 to 90 minutes. As we've explored the shared attributes and divergent facets of Facetíte and Ultherapy, the next section will equip you with the necessary tools to make an informed decision about which non-surgical facelift treatment aligns seamlessly with your aspirations and requirements. Retinal Detachment - Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments with Dr. Gibran Khurshid
The human eye, a remarkable work of natural design, allows us to visualize our environment in striking detail. At the core of our visual perception is the retina, a sensitive layer of tissue situated at the rear of the eye, tasked with transforming light into electrical signals that our brain deciphers as pictures. However, a situation where the retina becomes dislodged from its usual position can lead to a severe condition termed retinal detachment. This article aims to explore the origins, indications, and modern therapeutic options for retinal detachment, and highlight the expertise and contributions of professionals like Dr. Gibran Khurshid to this field of ophthalmology.
Understanding the Retina and Its Vulnerabilities
Before progressing further into the intricate details of retinal detachment, it's crucial to gain a basic understanding of the retina's structure, a domain in which Gibran Syed Khurshid has extensive expertise. The retina is a delicate layer comprised of light-sensitive cells, known as photoreceptors (rods and cones), that coat the inner surface of the eye. These cells have the critical task of capturing incoming light and conveying signals via the optic nerve to the brain, thus facilitating our ability to see. For the retina to perform its function effectively, it needs to remain securely fixed to the underlying tissue, the choroid. This fundamental layer provides the retina with essential oxygen and nutrients.
Causes of Retinal Detachment
Retinal detachment occurs when the retina becomes separated from the choroid, interrupting its blood supply and causing vision impairment. Several factors can contribute to this detachment, with the primary causes being:
1. Tears or Holes in the Retina: A tear or hole in the retina can allow the vitreous gel, a clear substance that fills the eye, to seep beneath the retina and detach it from the underlying choroid.
2. Aging: As we age, the vitreous gel within our eyes becomes more liquefied, increasing the risk of it pulling on the retina and causing detachment.
3. Trauma: Physical trauma to the eye, such as a blunt force injury or a severe eye injury during sports, can lead to retinal detachment.
4. Myopia (Nearsightedness): People with high degrees of myopia are at greater risk due to the elongation of the eyeball, which can lead to the stretching and thinning of the retina.
5. Family History: Genetics can play a role in the predisposition to retinal detachment. Individuals with a family history of the condition may have a higher risk.
6. Previous Eye Surgery or Inflammation: Complications from previous eye surgeries or eye diseases can increase the likelihood of retinal detachment.
Recognizing the Symptoms
Early detection of retinal detachment is crucial for successful treatment. Patients should be aware of the following common symptoms:
· Sudden Onset of Floaters: Small, dark specks or cobweb-like structures that appear to float across the field of vision.
· Flashes of Light: Brief flashes of light in the peripheral vision, often described as lightning-like streaks.
· Blurred Vision: A sudden decrease in vision quality, often likened to the sensation of looking through a cloudy or smudged window.
· Shadow or Curtain Across Vision: A shadow or curtain-like obstruction that moves across the visual field, often starting from the periphery.
Any of these symptoms should prompt immediate consultation with an eye specialist, as early intervention can significantly improve the prognosis.
Modern Treatment Options for Retinal Detachment
Throughout the years, strides in medical technology and innovations in surgical methodologies have revolutionized the sphere of retinal detachment treatment. This transformation, driven by professionals like Dr. Gibran Khurshid, has increased the likelihood of preserving vision and improved patient outcomes significantly. Some of the contemporary treatment options include:
1. Scleral Buckling: This surgical procedure involves the placement of a silicone band or buckle around the eye to push the wall of the eye against the detached retina. The buckle helps close retinal tears and reattach the retina to the choroid.
2. Pneumatic Retinopexy: In this minimally invasive procedure, a gas bubble is injected into the vitreous cavity to push the detached retina back into place. Laser or cryotherapy is then used to seal retinal tears. Patients are required to maintain a specific head position to keep the gas bubble in contact with the detached retina until it heals.
3. Vitrectomy: A vitrectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the vitreous gel to access the retina. The retina is then reattached using laser therapy or cryotherapy, and a gas or silicone oil bubble is often used to support the reattachment.
4. Laser Photocoagulation: This technique employs laser energy to create tiny burns around retinal tears or holes, forming a scar that seals the retina back in place.
It is crucial to note that the choice of treatment depends on the severity and specific characteristics of the retinal detachment, as determined by an ophthalmologist. Early consultation and prompt treatment increase the likelihood of preserving vision.
The Role of Early Detection and Intervention
In the realm of retinal detachment, time is of the essence. The longer the retina remains detached, the greater the risk of permanent vision loss. Therefore, early detection through routine eye exams and awareness of potential symptoms are vital.
Regular eye examinations serve as the cornerstone of early detection and prevention of retinal conditions. These routine check-ups, highly recommended for those with predisposing factors like a family history of retinal detachment or high myopia, can significantly aid in the early identification of potential issues. During these visits to eye care professionals like Gibran Khurshid, any signs of retinal tears or weaknesses can be detected, offering an opportunity for timely intervention and preventive measures. The importance of these regular examinations in maintaining optimal ocular health cannot be overstated.
Technological Breakthroughs
Retinal detachment represents a visual hazard requiring immediate medical attention. Grasping its origins, identifying the warning signs, and pursuing swift healthcare intervention are crucial measures in safeguarding vision. Technological breakthroughs and progress in the realm of ophthalmology, like those driven by Dr. Gibran Khurshid, have significantly enhanced the prognosis for those confronting retinal detachment. Periodic eye check-ups and a proactive stance toward ocular health can be monumental in averting this potentially debilitating condition. If you or a loved one shows any associated symptoms of retinal detachment, it’s paramount to reach out to an eye specialist without delay. Prompt detection and treatment can be the deciding factor in conserving the invaluable gift of sight.

Thelreads, Vigilantes 85, Replies Part 1
1) “And thus, we start a new era of vigilantes! The queen hast fallen, and McBee got McFucked, his plans were thrown into the trash, and he swore revenge. Koichi is in a big pickle. Oh this arc has a lot of potential- famous words said before a disaster, I know, but I still keep my hope! At least we won`t have Fires georg here to be annoying.”- Not unless you count his appearing in a tv for a scene or two anyway. 2) “IT`S PHELPS
NICE SEEING YOU HERE MY MAN, WHY THE SUIT, YOU GOING TO YOUR SISTER`S WEDDING OR SOMETHING?”- He needs the suit because it’s time for MHA Law & Order: Special Quirks Unit. 3) “Oh, they got the bastards? That`s unexpected, they technically didn`t do anything, there`s no evidence they helped koichi, besides the giant net to break his fall.”- I mean, they could technically hold them in custody, but honestly, it’d be a waste of their time and resources, especially sicne they’ve got the means to sic Makoto on Phelps via Koichi if needed.
4) “Now Puto that was the most suspicious bullshit you could have said, but honestly that is more believable than what the other guy said.
Jesus, it seems you guys at least bothered to agree on a single story.“- You just know that Soga had them all agree on the cover story, but Tochi just had a massive case of stage fright and fumbled his lines. 5) “Now, how far do your “knowledge” about her not being a typical villain goes, I wonder…”- They at least have physical evidence that there was something fucking around in her brain and altering her cognitive processes, but that’s something that would have to be saved for a court of law, and Nomura and AFO aren’t planning on letting things progress that far 6) “And after that she fell into a coma, we aren`t sure when she`ll wake up.”-
youtube
7) “That sigh better be about postal workers on strike, because if she does have amnesia or is in a coma I`m going to fucking lose my shit.”- ….Cough. 8) “Oh jesus, is that an hospital or a prison? Did they brought Pop to fucking Tartarus or something?”- High-security hospital wing, but honestly, with the kinds of powerful Quirks naturally embedded into people’s bodies, taking extra precautions and security measures isn’t that bad an idea – not even counting aberrations like Nomura who have multiple abilities through surgical experimentation and can sneak a bunch of assassination tools in under the radar, like exploding fists. 9) “IT`S MOM☆STEP AGAIN
HOLY SHIT, SHE IS INDEED ALIVE
and no sight of DAD☆STEP, I wonder where he is.”- Chugging beers with Izuku’s dad, would be my guess. 10) “Oh, this is interesting. How is she now? Did the Bee affect her personality and made her permanently unhinged? She was pumped full of trigger pretty much all the time, there`s no way that hasn`t given her a few lingering side effects.”- Pop not only needed immediate surgery, but also immediate protection, especially with Nomura’s declaration of war fresh on Koichi’s mind. They wanted her stabilised, but also put in a position where It wouldn’t be easy for Nomura to reach her and make Pop have a ‘tragic accident’ during the surgery. 11) “Phelps please, you know where your brother-in-law is, don`t be stupid, you don`t think he`s at home right now? I bet he didn`t even went to that secret warehouse, he`s probably on his bed as we speak.”- He’s presently training himself for playing Sniper Elite, IRL version 12) “Yeah, no need to bullshit him with things like “I don`t know who you`re talking about”, he knows he was involved, he always is, especially when it comes to Pop.
Being direct here is the best option, Koichi is busy hunting his hunter.”- It might be the worst possible spokesperson, but Soga is making the good points to be made about the vigilantes’ involvement in this case right now. 13) “For fuck`s sake Phelps, don`t get started with that crap, you let him run around doing as he pleases for two years, you know he is innocent, and if you really wanted to talk to him you`d ask your sister for his number.”- One way I see this is Phelps being concerned for Koichi’s well-being, wanting to have him in police custody so he doesn’t put himself in harm’s way between a dangerous unknown villain and the efforts of the police and the heroes to counteract this threat. 14) “The Muscle, yeah I agree.
Because he surely as fuck ain`t the brains.”- Also a nice acknowledgement that Koichi has now far outstripped the trio he initially struggled to fight against in chapter 1, and is now capable of being an independent vigilante on the streets if he needed to, present crisis notwithstanding. 15) “What? Like, four heroes? Five at most? Phelps, you are talking like Koichi personally threw a bus full of orphans into a volcano, chill dude.
Also, now we suddenly have a body count for Pop`s acts? Suddenly it wasn`t just a bunch of harmed civilians, now she actually killed someone? How convenient.”- I think Phelps was trying to guilt-trip Soga into giving up Koichi location by implying the damage done was far more deadly and serious than we’ve witnessed, only for it to fall flat because Soga’s unphased by that accusation and instead deftly turns it around on him. 16) “I do agree but shut the fuck up Soga, go talk like that to him when you survive a pointblank shot with a rubber bullet.”- Soga speaks truth, which is a good thing, but then again, it’s Soga speaking the blunt truth, which is bad. 17) “Yeah it was him, as we can see by Phelps` pissed-off face.
But I`m still surprised that they haven`t actually met, I would think that taking over Knuckle`s operation would require him to establish contact with his old assets, just to make sure they are okay with him when he needs their help.”- I’m guessing Soga’s distrust of the authorities extended to even the contacts Knuckle had on the inside, not to mention Tanuma’s department wasn’t directly linked to pop’s villain assault at the time, so he wasn’t a way ‘in’ for them during that situation. 18) “yeah yeah, get a room you two, we are here for business, just let him go already since you don`t have anything on him.”- I have to wonder what Soga’s future is after all this; if he’ll step into the role of a younger vigilante Knuckles for good or if he’ll wind up doing something else instead. 19) “Oh we`re gonna use some metaphor now, I see.
But you know Knuckles, there wouldn`t be holes in your socks if you didn`t bought cheap-ass socks.”- He needed to save up for all the back-alley drugs, equipment and improvised weaponry he bought instead.
20) “tthe fuck kinda metaphor was that knuckles my guy”- I dunno, it does kinda make sense. People ignore the need to replace what they already have if they can cover up the ‘holes’ or imperfections in the current possession so it all looks fine at a glance, but that doesn’t chance the fact that there’s still a hole there and it’s continually getting worse and worse underneath from all the wear and strain until you start getting a new hole torn into the cover-up…and there’s only so many socks you can wear before you need to face the root of the problem head-on.

(TW if you read the whole article, it describes sexual assault and drug use. I’ve excluded the personal stories here.)
“I believe pain is the most complex experience a human body can have,” Dr. Haider Warraich told me. Dr. Warraich is a cardiologist who teaches at Harvard Medical School, but his familiarity with pain is personal: While still in medical school, he began to suffer disabling back pain that for many years took over his life.
Dr. Warraich said that we tend to misperceive chronic pain simply as pain that lasts longer. Acute pain typically has a specific anatomical source — such as the shock you feel when you touch a hot stove — while chronic pain sometimes, not always, originates in the brain rather than the body. An extreme example is phantom limb pain, in which an amputee feels intense pain in a limb that no longer exists.
Accustomed to treating acute pain, physicians diagnose through imaging and knowledge of anatomy: If someone suffers from chronic back pain, get an X-ray! And imaging often finds something odd that may suggest a surgical solution. In Dr. Warraich’s case, there were prolapsed discs. But it’s also true that X-rays of people with no pain show similar anatomical faults.
It’s the brain-body gap: Researchers find that some people with substantial knee pain have normal X-rays, while many whose X-rays suggest significant arthritis feel no pain at all.
Think of the brain as the control panel for a pain alarm system that mostly protects the body from injury — but sometimes goes haywire. It can blare like a home alarm system that maddeningly thinks a window has been opened when it hasn’t been.
Unfortunately, brain alarms are harder to turn off.
Medicines that work very well for acute pain, like opioids, were prescribed for many years for chronic pain like Wert’s, resulting in a tsunami of addiction that now claims more than 100,000 lives a year in overdoses of various drugs — and leaving large numbers of pain sufferers dependent on pills that they now struggle to obtain. While opioids can provide relief, some experts also believe that opioids were never a sound choice for long-term pain.
Fortunately, some new treatments are emerging for chronic pain, but they are imperfect and often not covered by insurance. For starters, we’re learning that pain sometimes responds better to approaches that target the brain and psyche, not the body. For example, phantom limb pain is helped with mirror therapy, in which the sufferer repeatedly looks in the mirror at a remaining limb, to trick the brain into thinking that the body is doing just fine.
[…]
Chronic pain is unusual among diseases of despair in that it disproportionately strikes women, who according to one study are 75 percent more likely than men to report severe pain. That apparently is because testosterone eases pain (boys and girls suffer pain equally until puberty).
Another big factor in pain differences is class. One study found that poor Americans are more than three times as likely to report pain as wealthy Americans. Another found that just 2 percent of those with graduate degrees report severe pain, while almost 10 percent of high school dropouts do.
“Basically, if you’ve got a B.A., you’re vaccinated against all of this crap,” said Deaton, the economist. Deaton, Case and Stone found that each successive generation among less-educated Americans has reported more pain at any given age.
“If these patterns continue, pain prevalence will continue to increase for all adults,” they wrote in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. “Tomorrow’s elderly will be sicker than today’s elderly, with potentially serious implications for health care.”
The brain appears very sensitive to expectations of pain, which is why placebos ease pain — and this may be a factor in faith healing as well. In one study, injections of saline solution turned out to be almost as effective as injections of pain medication in reducing arm pain. Conversely, when research subjects received the saline but were warned it might increase pain — that’s a nocebo, the opposite of a placebo — they suffered significantly more.
America’s increasing chronic pain doesn’t come primarily from obesity or workplace injuries but may have something to do with the financial and social stresses in working-class America. When jobs are lost, pain increases. One international study found that a 3 percent increase in the unemployment rate is associated with a 1 percent increase in the number of people reporting pain.
Other studies have found that economic insecurity is associated with more pain. So are discrimination and unhappiness. Pain can lead to depression, causing further pain. “Loneliness strongly predicts the development of pain,” another study found. In effect, chronic pain is tightly woven into the bundle of diseases of despair, and causation probably runs in several directions.
There’s some evidence that trauma and stress teach the brain to be hypervigilant and put the pain alarm system on a hair trigger. This builds on itself: Researchers have also found that chronic pain can result in greater sensitivity, so that pain breeds more pain.
Pain even changes the physical brain. Several studies have found that long-term pain leads to a loss of gray matter in the prefrontal cortex, although experts are still working out the implications of that.
[…]
So how can we heal from chronic pain? What can experts advise those suffering from it?
Dr. Daniel Clauw, director of the Chronic Pain and Fatigue Research Center at the University of Michigan, believes that we already have a toolbox of remedies that can help 80 percent or 90 percent of chronic pain sufferers but that our treatment system and insurance protocols betray those in need.
“We’ve really over-medicalized pain,” he told me. His first recommendation to patients with chronic pain is simple: Get more sleep and exercise. There’s no simple solution, he emphasized, and it takes work by patients to recover.
“I’m a huge advocate of physical therapy,” he added, and he also sees positive results from yoga, acupuncture, acupressure, cognitive behavioral therapy and meditation.
He mimics addressing a patient: “Mrs. Jones, I don’t know if acupuncture is going to work for you, or if it’s going to be physical therapy or chiropractic manipulation. But I do know that if you try three of these non-pharmacologic therapies, on average one of the three will work pretty well. And then the next year we’ll try two or three more, and you’ll get better yet.”
The demographic most vulnerable to chronic pain — unemployed middle-aged Americans with limited education — is less likely to have health insurance or the means to pay for treatment (much of which isn’t covered by insurance in any case). So these people suffer, or they may pay $5 for a fentanyl-laced pill to delay the suffering.
New approaches are emerging, but they are not necessarily more accessible. Virtual reality seems promising for alleviating chronic pain. Mindfulness training is sometimes helpful. Cannabis helps many people, with the most promising cannabinoids easing pain without producing a high, and researchers are investigating some encouraging indications that psilocybin (the hallucinogenic substance in “magic mushrooms”) may help as well.
Kevin Boehnke, a pain researcher at the University of Michigan, said that if cannabis were discovered today, the scientific world would be dazzled and would rush to test various cannabinoids for their medical potential.
“There’s this vast untapped potential there,” he said, but it’s often not available because insurers are wary — even as they cover expensive surgeries that have a poor record in resolving pain.
[…]
Another approach is to move from Band-Aids to prevention. Since pain and deaths of despair fall heavily on the poorly educated and unemployed, we might address educational gaps: getting everyone through high school and equipping graduates with a marketable skill. Before the pandemic caused setbacks, there was some progress in raising America’s pathetic high school graduation rate and in bolstering vocational training with initiatives like career academies.
Prevention also entails addressing broader social dysfunction. We’ve done a good job reducing workplace injuries, for example, but we haven’t shown the same determination to prevent the kinds of abuse that seared Wert and her sister. The foster care system is often a disaster that sets children up for diseases of despair. Home-visiting programs like Nurse-Family Partnership coach parents on everything from avoiding substance abuse and chipped lead paint to talking frequently with one’s child, and they have a remarkable record of improving outcomes for disadvantaged children. High-quality pre-K can similarly help get kids on track to success.
People recovering from addictions often talk about the importance of facing reality and accepting difficult truths. Here’s one for all of us to confront: Tens of millions of Americans are suffering in ways that lead to addiction, pain and a tangle of other pathologies and then transmit this misery to the next generation.
Maybe the brain’s pain alarm system is trying to tell us about how America heals: To ease our chronic pain, we must do better at addressing deeper wounds in our economy and society.
