“You shouldn’t be here,” Harry says.

Across from him Draco rolls his eyes. He’s covered in dirt and blood, his left eyes sporting a huge bruise, vivid against the pale skin. Harry notices he’s wearing plain black robes instead of his usual green, no doubt in an attempt to blend in with all the other panicked students.

“Don’t be an ass. What the hell are you doing out here?”

Harry stares at him. “You - “

“I was knocked out. Your asshole friend stunned me.”

“Ron? You were pleading you were on ‘their side!’”

“Yes, well if we lost it would be rather hard to keep spying on them if I walked around with a huge sign saying, ‘I’m part of the Order!’ isn’t it?”

Despite himself, Harry can feel the faintest edge of a smile tug at his lips. He stares down at his hands; dark skin, silvery scars, I must not tell lies down the back of his palm. He rubs the marks - the words are raised, thin filiments of silver ratcheted underneath the skin.

“So you don’t know - “

Draco frowns. “Know what?”

I shall wait for one hour in the Forbidden Forest. If, at the end of that hour, you have not come to me, have not given yourself up, then battle recommences. This time, I shall enter the fray myself, Harry Potter, and I shall find you, and I shall punish every last man, woman, and child who has tried to conceal you from me.

Harry swallows, hard. The forest suddenly seemed very dark now, the branches pressing in. He stares up; he could just barely see the clouds, see Sirius, the brightest star in the sky.

It wouldn’t be so bad, dying. He’d get to see Sirius again, Remus again, would get to see his parents for the first time in 15 years. The thought was tempting, so good it hurt, made him want to claw himself up in the inside.

Harry forced himself to meet Draco’s gaze. “Nothing. Nothing at all.”

He stares at Draco, forces himself to memorize his face. The smooth, pale skin, those beautful grey eyes. The blond of his hair, a pale gold all twined through Harry’s fingertips, the beautful curve of his mouth whenever he smiled.

And the memories. 2 years of hiding, of fighting, 2 precious years and God he wanted more, wanted it so badly he thought he would choke and -

He’d never let himself dream before, never let himself think about life past Hogwarts. How could he? He was the Savior, the last beacon of hope for the world. He didn’t get a future. He wasn’t made for one.

“We should get back,” Draco says, and Harry swallows down the noise, the flutter of Draco’s eyelashes, the softness of his voice. He can feel himself cracking apart, that glass frame of their life together shattering. A house, a huge one in a forest, a field to play Quidditch and a pond to swim in. They’d both be Aurors, hunting down wizards and at night they’d come home and Harry would cook and Draco would bake and they’d curl up by the fire.

Harry closes his eyes, grips Draco’s hands. He barely hears Draco’s soft murmurs - “It’s okay. I’ll be here with you,” barely hears anything over the pounding in his head and the pain in his heart. He counts to 5, trying not to break apart and failing all the same.

1. Midnight Quidditch games, flying around the tower, wind in their hair. Draco’s face, all flushed and rosy, his lips cold against Harry’s as they kissed.

2. Potions, paired up with each other, the brilliant vapors turning everything into gilded light. The smoke and the steam, hands beneath robes, Draco’s grin so bright even in the darkness.

3. Nightmares, waking up in each other’s bed, pressing cold feet against warm legs. Hands clasped tightly, mouths on necks, the soft breathing, the rising and falling of two people so perfectly in sync.

4. Their first kiss, in the Room of Requirement, against the wall. Draco’s hands around Harry’s wrist, in Harry’s hair, the soft movement of lips against lips, skin against skin, the tears both of them shed as they finally let themselves fall in love.

5. The battle, all the screaming and all the shooting, blood and bone and tears. Marble houses and marble walls and drowning -

“Hey,” Draco grips his shoulder; Harry slowly opens his eyes. “Hey. It’s okay.”

“Yeah.” Harry swallows; he watches Draco and lets him go. “I’m sorry.”

Draco gives him a strange look. One hand cards through his hair, blonde strands slipping between fingers before he shrugs. “Okay. 3 broomsticks. After...after this is over.”

He thinks he’s about to scream but Harry clenches his jaw, locks the noise inside of him. He gives Draco a weak smile.

“Yeah,” he says. “Of course.”

“Look - “

“Draco”, Harry interrupts. “Thank you. For everything.”

The kisses. The glances. The smiles. The grins. The Quiddtich Matches. The meetings.

Every press of their bodies, every shared breath, every stifled bit of laughter. For all the firsts and all the lasts, scars and blood and Harry thanked him for all of it.

Draco gives him a confused look but Harry shakes his head.

“You’re right,” he says. “We should go.”

Draco looks like he’s about to argue but he turns away, and Harry looks at him more last time before he disappears amongst the trees.
