2 Samuel 24: God Commands David To Take A Census Of Israel And Judah
1 Again the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and he incited David against them, saying, “Go and take a census of Israel and Judah.”
2 So the king said to Joab and the army commanders with him, “Go throughout the tribes of Israel from Dan to Beersheba and enroll the fighting men, so that I may know how many there are.”
3 But Joab replied to the king, “May the Lord your God multiply the troops a hundred times over, and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king want to do such a thing?”
4 The king’s word, however, overruled Joab and the army commanders; so they left the presence of the king to enroll the fighting men of Israel.
5 After crossing the Jordan, they camped near Aroer, south of the town in the gorge, and then went through Gad and on to Jazer. 
6 They went to Gilead and the region of Tahtim Hodshi, and on to Dan Jaan and around toward Sidon. 
7 Then they went toward the fortress of Tyre and all the towns of the Hivites and Canaanites. Finally, they went on to Beersheba in the Negev of Judah.
8 After they had gone through the entire land, they came back to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.
9 Joab reported the number of the fighting men to the king: In Israel there were eight hundred thousand able-bodied men who could handle a sword, and in Judah five hundred thousand.
10 David was conscience-stricken after he had counted the fighting men, and he said to the Lord, “I have sinned greatly in what I have done. Now, Lord, I beg you, take away the guilt of your servant. I have done a very foolish thing.”
11 Before David got up the next morning, the word of the Lord had come to Gad the prophet, David’s seer: 
12 “Go and tell David, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am giving you three options. Choose one of them for me to carry out against you.’”
13 So Gad went to David and said to him, “Shall there come on you three years of famine in your land? Or three months of fleeing from your enemies while they pursue you? Or three days of plague in your land? Now then, think it over and decide how I should answer the one who sent me.”
14 David said to Gad, “I am in deep distress. Let us fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercy is great; but do not let me fall into human hands.”
15 So the Lord sent a plague on Israel from that morning until the end of the time designated, and seventy thousand of the people from Dan to Beersheba died. 
16 When the angel stretched out his hand to destroy Jerusalem, the Lord relented concerning the disaster and said to the angel who was afflicting the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand.” The angel of the Lord was then at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.
17 When David saw the angel who was striking down the people, he said to the Lord, “I have sinned; I, the shepherd, have done wrong. These are but sheep. What have they done? Let your hand fall on me and my family.”
David Builds an Altar
18 On that day Gad went to David and said to him, “Go up and build an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.” 
19 So David went up, as the Lord had commanded through Gad. 
20 When Araunah looked and saw the king and his officials coming toward him, he went out and bowed down before the king with his face to the ground.
21 Araunah said, “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?”
“To buy your threshing floor,” David answered, “so I can build an altar to the Lord, that the plague on the people may be stopped.”
22 Araunah said to David, “Let my lord the king take whatever he wishes and offer it up. Here are oxen for the burnt offering, and here are threshing sledges and ox yokes for the wood. 
23 Your Majesty, Araunah gives all this to the king.” Araunah also said to him, “May the Lord your God accept you.”
24 But the king replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”
So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen and paid fifty shekels of silver for them. 
25 David built an altar to the Lord there and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. Then the Lord answered his prayer in behalf of the land, and the plague on Israel was stopped.

Henry's Dog David, and How RWRB (the Book and the Movie) Explore the Meaning of His Name.

An Easter Egg from the book that the film managed to incorporate in an entirely different context.
Henry naming his dog David is one of the things Alex comments on both in the film and the book. He finds the name particularly odd for a pet, and when Henry tells him later that the inspiration was David Bowie, Alex remarks that he could have just used the surname instead.
This is basically just me overthinking the way the book and the film added "David and Jonathan" to two totally different scenes haha.

There has been a lot of debate over Bowie's sexuality since the 70s, and possibly conflicting statements from Bowie himself over the decades, but he did leave quite an impact on queer people in his time (ref: this article). Henry both in the book and in the film has often turned to literature and art for inspiration, and solace, when it came to exploring his own identity as a gay man. All kinds of historical queer identities - both debated and confirmed - show up in the tapestry of people and ideas that have influenced Henry's own thoughts and ideas (Alex's too). So it definitely makes sense that he would name his beloved pet dog after one of those inspirations.
(notably, during Henry's dramatic entrance when Alex comes down to the UK for damage control, the song playing is Bowie's "Up the Hill Backwards". You also see him choose a Queen song for karaoke, which makes me want to really headcanon him as a 70s prog rock fan 😄)
David and Jonathan
In the book, Alex goes over the details of Henry's fact sheet with Nora and his sister June. When he mentions the name of Henry's dog, he claims his dislike for the name is because it sounds more like a "tax attorney" than a beloved pet (Ch 2).
In the film, it's his SS detail Amy who quizzes him. She responds to his quip about Henry's choice of name for a pet by telling him what she's named her own dog. It's a tiny, fun detail with no lasting importance in the film, but I feel it does work within the larger framework of how the film incorporates queer readings and figures too.
I see this as a reference to a popular reading of the Hebrew/Biblical story of David and Jonathan from the 2 books of Samuel. David was a shepherd anointed by the prophet Samuel (through orders from God), to succeed King Saul, and Jonathan was Saul's son who was extremely devoted to David and even saved him from his father's wrath. They were known to have made a covenant to each other soon after they met, and the first Book of Samuel gives us a picture of an immensely close bond between the two:
After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself. From that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return home to his family. And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt. (1 Samuel 18, 1-4)
Interpretations of their relationship have ranged from close friendship to a romantic relationship, and there have been many, many queer readings on this pair.
In Casey McQuiston's RWRB too, Alex references both a saying from the Book of Proverbs (24:13), and the story of David and Jonathan in the same paragraph. This is in Ch 10, when Henry takes Alex to the V&A museum. This particular sequence is in the inner chamber of the museum, shortly after the couple dance to Elton John's "Your Song".

He compares himself and Henry to "a lost David and Jonathan", and it's pretty obvious why when you think of their devotion, and the tragic end of the relationship of the latter. Like Jonathan, Henry is a prince utterly devoted to one man, and sure that his family too will be against their bond. Like David, Alex is an outsider who the royal family may view as a threat to their stability, and therefore must be kept away. David's love for Jonathan is immense: he makes the covenant with Saul's son soon after they meet, and when he mourns Jonathan's death, he says "Thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women." (2 Samuel 1:26).
This amazing post from @elipheleh explores this metaphor more in detail (as well as St. Chiara, and a quote from Oscar Wilde, who is referenced both in the book and the film as a writer Henry is fond of). It also speaks about the verse from the Book of Proverbs that Alex remembers, partly in Spanish, partly in English - Eat honey, my son, for it is good; honey from the comb is sweet to your taste. (Proverbs 24:13-14)
(Jonathan in 1 Samuel also has his own reference to honey - there is a story that chronicles a tense moment between Jonathan and his father, King Saul, due to Jonathan eating wild honey on a day when the troops were bound by an oath to fast (he had not heard the oath himself). He almost faces death by Saul's hand for breaking the oath the latter had made, but is saved by the other people in the troops. (1 Samuel 14: 24-46). I've seen different ways of this passage being interpreted - as either Jonathan being judged for disobeying an oath even though he was not around when it was announced, or Saul being viewed as foolish for making such an oath in the first place. The main point is, Saul is ready to kill his son for breaching a certain protocol, and it is the people who save Jonathan.
Similarly IMO, Henry is prepared to live his whole life in the closet viewing his sexuality as something that would bring shame to his family, but eventually recognizes that he has support. Both within his family (in the form of his mother Catherine and his sister Bea), and in the public eye)
At this point in their lives, Alex and Henry see very little hope that things will get better soon enough for them to unite. It is more than likely that - in their minds - this one romantic visit will be their last for a long, long time. Of course David and Jonathan - who parted ways in the hope of being reunited after the battle with Jonathan's father, and whose friendship/love met a tragic end - would be considered a fitting parallel for the situation Alex and Henry find themselves in.
The book has the space and scope to explore many, many images and symbols that could fit Alex and Henry. Whether it's in the letters they send each other, the references Alex learns more about as he figures out his sexuality. The book can - at the V&A museum - describe the statues the two men linger at in loving detail, making us more aware how poignant their temporary separation will be and how bittersweet this last dance is.
The movie's focus is different - the V&A scene is a (presumably) final, deeply intimate moment that lets Alex see for real the weight of his role in Henry's environment, and how little he expects to see his dreams come true. It also lets Henry see how determined Alex is to make his every dream a reality.
Most moments of highlighting queer literature or history are pocketed away in smaller sequences in the film, as small references and Easter eggs (eg. the books they recommend each other), as the film focuses more on the relationship and it's effects both on the men and the world around them. The V&A is more a visual backdrop for that bittersweet last moment where the two can find equal ground and truly understand each other. I think mentioning the names of the statues would take away from that.
The movie didn't need to include David and Jonathan. Why is why I'm truly, truly grateful that they still did. Even as a tiny, cute Easter egg that is supposed to be banter about weirdly specific pet-naming protocol 💖

A note on the poetry: some of these are very topically relevant to the fic to the point that I was yelling to my alpha readers about how perfect they were! Some are very not topically relevant but still good poems. I highly recommend them all! I took great pains to make sure that each poem was written before the time of the fic so the characters could, theoretically, have read them. Also I'm going by Ao3 chapter numbers, not how they would be numbered without the introduction and interlude.

for the 24th of november 2024 with a paired chapter from each Testament (the First & the New Covenant) of the Bible

along with Today’s reading from the ancient books of Proverbs and Psalms with Proverbs 24 and Psalm 24 coinciding with the day of the month, accompanied by Psalm 64 for the 64th day of Astronomical Autumn, and Psalm 29 for day 329 of the year (with the consummate book of 150 Psalms in its 3rd revolution this year)

Sometimes the walk of faith is one of darkness. We wonder where we are. We wonder where God is. We pray. We struggle. We feel empty inside. We need to be careful here. Faith believes that God is the Center of our lives, regardless of how we may feel at the moment. God works in ways that we often cannot understand at the time. Like a sculpture that is unfinished, or a tapestry still being woven, we do not see the whole picture of our lives. It is vital, then, to trust that the Lord is leading the way, already present for us in the days ahead. He is on the other side of the next moment, calling us to look forward and to believe in the promise of his blessing and eternal life. As it is written: "Who among you fears the LORD? Who obeys the voice of His Servant? Who walks in darkness and has no light? Let him trust in the name of the LORD and rely upon his God" (Isa. 50:10). Amen. Hope overcomes all our affliction: "My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever" (Psalm 73:26).
When Yeshua said, "Let not your heart be troubled... I go to prepare a place for you," he was assuring his friends that he had matters well under his control, and therefore they did not need to worry, since his passion rendered their salvation completely secure... The future is a "prepared place" for you, even if life in this world is often marked by testing and various refining fires. God has not promised to rescue us according to our own schedule, however, so if it appears that your prayers are not immediately answered, keep waiting in faith: "Rejoice, even if you have been grieved by various trials, because the tested genuineness of your faith -- more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire -- may result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Yeshua the Messiah" (1 Pet. 1:6-7).
God works “all things together for good,” and since the exercise of faith is for your good, he engineers all things to build your faith. "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, says the LORD" (Isa. 55:8).
Those who call upon the LORD trust not only in concealed good behind ambiguous appearances ("all things work together for good") but also in a future, real, substantive good that will one day be clearly manifest for us all... We fight the "good fight" of faith, which is a worthy struggle that eventually is realized for blessing. Meanwhile, may the LORD our God keep us from such depth of sorrow that leads to sickness, darkness and despair. Faith sees the invisible light, the truth of love that overcomes all powers of darkness, hate, and fear. Amen!

Okay, OP, let's get crazy. I promise you at the end of all this I will not ask you if you hate homosexuals, I promise. I will ask you a couple other questions that I feel are more important, so stay with me as I stayed with you on your explanation.
You believe homosexuality is a sin because the bible tells you so, well in that case, I hope you are prepared to defend why the hell you as a woman are on tumblr at all! You should keep your mouth shut when men are around and comport yourself accordingly! As your bible says:
Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence.1 Timothy 2:11-12
And don't think you're off the hook for preaching to the apostasy and the non-believers, because that's also a no-no. There could be a man among your followers or casual perusers of your blog and you could potentially teach them something:
Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says. "And if they want to learn something, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for women to speak in church."1 Corinthians 14:34-35
Also, where the hell is your husband in all this? Shouldn't you be in the kitchen preparing dinner for him, and doing all that he asks. As god says, he has authority over you and you should submit to him!
"Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For a husband has authority over his wife just as Christ has authority over the church; and Christ is himself the Savior of the church, his body. 24 And so wives must submit themselves completely to their husbands just as the church submits itself to Christ."
I hope you are also prepared to advocate the following for young girls and women: they must marry their rapist, polygyny should be standard practice and enshrined in law, and they must be prepared to to have your religious vows (and in this case legal vows as well, considering the institution) annulled if your dad just really hates your husband.
Don't believe this is all in your bible? How about this excerpt from The Marginalization of Women by Christopher Rollston that summarizes some of the worst of the misogyny inherent in the text: "An unmarried woman could be compelled to marry her rapist, as long as the rapist could pay the standard bride price and the woman’s father was comfortable with the marriage (Deuteronomy 22:28–29). Polygyny (a man having multiple wives at the same time) was not condemned, but was an accepted and legal custom (Deuteronomy 21:15–17; Genesis 4:19–24; and 2 Samuel 3:2–5). A woman’s religious vow could be nullified by her father or her husband (Numbers 30:3–15)."
That seems a little bit more complicated than the 'this woman is yours, this man is yours, go nuts' formula you used before. It's more like 'this man is like god, these women (and all women, whether they consent or not) belong to the man legally and socially, go nuts (but only the men)'. But that hardly matters, it was inevitable you would be wrong and sinful because you're a woman! For as we all know, the bible says:
“For Adam was formed first, then Eve, and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor” (1 Timothy 2, vv. 13–14). 
And the only cure for you is being pumped full of babies: as a woman "will be saved through childbirth, if she remains in faith and love and sanctification with modesty" (1 Timothy 2:15)
But perhaps you have accepted your sinful, weak nature and those admonitions to women don't do it for you. How about we take a look at the book of Leviticus, where you so helpfully get your prohibition against homosexuality ("You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination." Leviticus Ch. 18 verse 22. or if you prefer: "If a man lies with a man as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them." Leviticus Ch. 20 verse 13). But Leviticus is a big book, let's see what else is forbidden:
Reaping to the very edges of a field (19:9); Holding back the wages of an employee overnight (19:13): Cross-breeding animals (19:19); Sleeping with another man’s slave (19:20) (slavery is notably NOT forbidden in this book, a bit of an oversight by god); Eating fruit from a tree within four years of planting it (19:23) Trimming your beard (19:27) Cutting your hair at the sides (19:27) Getting tattoos (19:28) Giving your children to be sacrificed to Molek (18:21) (arguably this is a good law, but who the hell is Molek and where did he come from?) Turning to mediums or spiritualists (19:31) Not standing in the presence of the elderly (19:32)  Cursing your father or mother (punishable by death, bit of an overreaction) (20:9) Blasphemy (punishable by stoning to death, why so specific?) (24:14) Selling an Israelite as a slave (foreigners are fine) (25:42) ah, there we go, it does say something about slavery I apologize. Only foreigners can be slaves which is a but unlucky for all us gentiles.
Now I can't wait for your long-winded, incredibly stupid defence of your frankly immoral decision to reap to the edges of the field. I'll be here, waiting, until you're ready to defend yourself!
Or, you could just give it up and admit that you don't care what 99% of what the bible says. You have chosen to pick this one passage from this one book of the bible and use it as a way to call all those who are homosexual immoral and abominations in the eyes of god. You have not chosen to do the same with those who curse their father or cut their hair at the sides or get tattoos or sacrifice their children to Molek (a joke, stay with me). So don't tell me or anyone else that you got this knowledge from god. You chose this to be true because it aligns with your values just like how most of the laws above simply don't, so you choose not the follow them. Why should the prohibition against homosexuality still hold water outside of bronze age Palestine when the name of Molek has faded into obscurity? Where do you get the right to claim you are such a supporter of gay people that you drool at any Ian McKellen impression, but put his love for his husband on the same level as beastiality and incest for what appears to be an arbitrary reason?
Usually when I compare something to beastiality I don't mean it as a shining compliment, but you have already covered why you love gay people with all your heart so I won't rehash. Rather than whether you hate gay people, how would answer the questions posed above? Everyone is entitled to their opinion, no one is free from criticism for that opinion. And just to pre-empt the whining, this is a public forum, you post at your own risk, if you don't care to debate, don't respond.

With all due respect, Anon, I fail to see what this has to do with Lord of the Rings. 
Oh, but you’ll probably want a serious answer, tho. Very well. I mean, I’d rather talk about any number of more interesting things than sex—like walnuts, or toenail clippings, or watching paint dry, or perhaps the consistency of squirrel droppings—but in the interest of making my own stance clear, and answering the questions that I’m sure have hovered unasked in the minds of many of my followers, I will provide the most kind and thorough answer that I can. 
But I’m still putting it under a read-more, because, as aforementioned, it has nothing to do with Lord of the Rings. 
The short answer is no. No, I don’t dislike gay people. I’m sure most of my follower count identifies as gay, or somewhere along that spectrum, and y’all have been lovely ever since I began this blog. To be fair, I know more than half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve, but so long as you’re nice to me and leave fun interactions on my artwork, I like you plenty. If that’s satisfactory to you, good!
Because the long answer is more complicated. 
Hate the Sin, Love the Sinner
The first thing we must do is define the difference between “liking someone” and “approving of what they do”. If you’ve been anywhere near most Christian circles—or just listened to Hamilton—you’ve probably heard the phrase “hate the sin, love the sinner”. That phrase applies here. I have religious reasons for believing that the lifestyle of homosexuality is wrong, but I don’t harbor ill will towards the people who practice it. There’s a difference between disliking a person and disapproving of their actions. 
I don’t approve of smoking. I think it hurts people. That doesn’t mean I hate people who smoke. On the contrary, I care about them, and I would rather they don’t get lung cancer and breathing problems later in life, so I would urge them to quit smoking. 
I don’t approve of gambling. I think it hurts people. That doesn’t mean I hate people who gamble. On the contrary, I care about them, and I would rather not see them form an addiction that squanders away all their money to an uncaring corporation, leaving them poor and unhappy—or just as bad, winning the jackpot, and then being rich and unhappy—so I would urge them to quit gambling. 
I don’t approve of any and all forms of self-harm. It hurts my heart. I watched my best friend go through a long period of depression and self-harm, and it utterly broke me, that someone I loved would have to cause themselves external pain in order to get a reprieve from the pain they felt inside. I didn’t hate my friend. No, no, no, that couldn’t be further from the truth. I loved my friend more than my own life, ached for them, and wished more than anything they’d stop this thing that was hurting them, because I couldn’t stand watching a sickness slowly torture someone that I dearly, dearly loved (and still do). 
In the same way, I believe in a loving God who made us, knows us inside and out and front and back, loves us deeply, and wants what’s best for us. He once said, “The thief comes to steal and kill and destroy, but I have come that they may have life, and life abundantly”. I believe that, in His wisdom and kindness, He left us a Book of instructions on how to find that life. He laid out the road to that destination—the straight and narrow path—and He said, “Just follow Me, and I’ll get you there. I’ve put up guard rails along the way where there are pits by the side of the road.”
And I said, “What if I fall in?”
And He said, “Just turn around and take My hand. I’ll pull you out.”
If you’d known someone all your life, and they’d always proven themselves worthy of your trust, you’d believe them when they said “this is the right way that will lead you to safety, and that is the wrong way that will lead you into danger”. So it is here. He outlined, very clearly, in His Book, what is the sexual ethic for which He designed us. Contrary to popular belief, there’s actually a lot of freedom within that ethic; He basically said, “Lady, here’s your man, and mister, here’s your lady. Now you promise to be good and loyal to each other and take care of one another forever? Yes? Great, the rest is yours, have fun, kids.” The Bible actually has very little to say about sex as long as it’s in the right context. But anything outside of that context—including homosexuality, beastiality, incest, fornication, adultery, lust for someone other than your partner, etc.—is a pit by the side of the road, a bug and not a feature. 
So you see that I have religious reasons to disapprove of homosexuality. I have been told—by Someone I trust more than my own judgment—that it is outside His planned parameters for the world. But this does not mean I automatically dislike those who do not share my faith and convictions. I can believe they’re in the wrong without disliking them.
To put it simply, “I don’t like what you’re doing” DOES NOT EQUAL “I don’t like you”. I’d urge you to keep that in mind; it’s a good life lesson in general. 
So now that we’ve established that baseline, let’s look at how it applies to this blog. 
The Rep Sheet of Frodo-With-Glasses
Now, of course I’m a biased party, by nature of being the defendant in this trial (and my own lawyer LOL), but I think you’ll find that a fair and honest analysis of everything on this blog will reveal that I never even once expressed disdain for gay people. 
I’ve made it very clear where I stand on shipping through disclaimers on my art. I don’t ship Frodo and Sam, or Legolas and Gimli, etc. But to jump from that to “you must not like gay people” is like saying that because I don’t ship Romanogers in the MCU that I must hate Russians. 
I have repeatedly expressed that I see my own friendships reflected in the friendships in LotR. For that reason, they’re very important to me, and I feel no need to interpret them as anything else. To jump from that to “you must not like gay people” is like saying that because I am perfectly content with plain vanilla ice cream, I must have a personal vendetta against chocolate fudge. 
I have posted a disclaimer setting expectations for a passage I knew could be interpreted very differently. I expressed my own understanding of the nudity involved, and asked that my followers please have the decency to respect my interpretation of the story, with a few tongue-in-cheek jokes to lighten the mood. To jump from that to “you must not like gay people” is like your high school English Literature teacher giving an F on your perfectly formatted and well-argued paper just because your interpretation of the blue window curtains doesn’t match the one in the textbook. 
I have engaged in polite discussion with an anon who complimented my art. When the discussion came to “immoral relationships” between the characters, my response was to celebrate friendship. All I have ever done on this blog was celebrate friendship. I have never insulted gay people, I have never called them slurs or hateful names, I have never even confronted anyone who tags my art as ship art against my wishes. All I have ever done was try to be civil and polite and celebrate friendship.  
Have you ever considered, Anon, that I have been silent for a reason? That “the quiet part” has stayed quiet on purpose? That, perhaps, I did not come here to police my following and force my views upon them, but simply to celebrate a book that I love, and invite people of all stripes to come and celebrate it with me, if they so wish?
Have you considered that, if I disliked gay people, I could block every single one of my followers who express such views on their profiles? I didn’t get to over 800 followers on tumblr, of all websites, by policing those who are allowed to interact with my blog. I didn’t cultivate the community I did by shutting down people I disagree with. 
I am here to entertain myself. I have always been here to entertain myself. I was doing it before there were 800 of you, and I will be doing it long after this blog is gone. Whether or not you would like to join in with me is entirely your prerogative. 
You wanna see how much I hate gay people? You wanna see how far the vitriol goes? Watch this! Sir Ian McKellen is a fantastic actor and seems like a splendid person in real life. No one else could possibly be Gandalf the way he is. To see his face on the screen when I watch Peter Jackson’s trilogy makes me feel warm and fuzzy and happy inside, because I feel like I’m looking into the kindly eyes of an old friend. I enthuse over it every time Phil Dragash manages to perfectly replicate McKellen’s iconic cadence in his audiobook, because it’s like hearing the Gandalf I grew up with speaking the real words on the page. Sir Ian McKellen’s contribution to the fandom, and to the community surrounding Lord of the Rings, is invaluable and irreplaceable. Middle Earth would be a lesser thing without him in it. 
This is now a thing that is on my blog: enthusiastically singing the praises of the work of a gay man. His lifestyle choices, though I don’t agree with them, are separate from the mark he’s left on this fandom, and everything I could have to say about the latter category is positive. 
So, now. Would you like to ask me that question again?

I do not, and will never, approve of the act of homosexuality. I have religious reasons for doing so; much the same, actually, as I believe Tolkien himself held. 
I harbor no ill will towards gay people. No matter what you believe on this topic, you are welcome to continue interacting with this blog if you so wish. All I ask is what I ask of everyone who passes through here: Be kind and polite. 
Your response is your prerogative. I have expressed what I believe is right, and I will not budge or apologize for it, but I’m not demanding that you agree with me. Heck, I can’t tell you to do anything, and even if I could, I wouldn’t want to. I’m not your mom. I’m not God. You don’t have to answer to me any more than I have to answer to you. How you choose to respond is your choice. 
If that means you have to leave, that’s fine. I wish you all the best, and I hope you find what you’re looking for.

On entend parfois cette expression: «il ne faut pas juger»
Dit ainsi, est-ce en accord avec les Ecritures ?
On ne peut répondre aussi catégoriquement à cette question, il faut être très précis quand on aborde ce sujet.
Pour conforter cette pensée certains citent, par exemple Luc 6/37: "ne jugez point et vous ne serez point jugés" agrémenté de Matthieu 7/2: "car on vous jugera du jugement dont vous jugez … "
Mais Matthieu montre par les versets qui suivent une nuance importante: celle que nous ne devons pas juger quelqu’un sur une chose ( une paille), alors que chez soi , il y a d’autres choses condamnables plus importantes ! (une poutre).
A chacun donc de se juger soi même d’abord et, ainsi, dira l’apôtre, il pourra juger, régler le problême de la poutre chez le prochain !
Paul ajoutera dans la même pensée que juger quelqu’un alors que l’on fait les mêmes choses condamnables est méprisable (Romains 2 /1 à 3).
MAIS, attention il faut juger, mais que faut-il juger ?
Le MAL sous toutes ses formes, et quand je dis MAL, tout ce que Dieu appelle mal !
Que ce soit en nous d’abord, ensuite dans notre proche entourage (famille, église) et finalement dans le monde qui nous entoure.
Dans l’Ancien Testament, comme dans le Nouveau, ordre est donné aux enfants de Dieu et au peuple de Dieu de juger le MAL!
Nous verrons, d’ailleurs, que c’est parce qu’il n��y a pas eu jugement du mal que bien des hommes, un peuple, Israël et des églises ont été très sévèrement repris, châtiés parle Seigneur !
Jésus ne dira t-il pas dans Jean 7/24: "ne jugez pas selon l’apparence mais jugez selon la justice"
Il faut donc bien juger !
Même jusque dans les dons spirituels dira Paul dans la première aux Corinthiens chapitre 14 et verset 29 : "pour ce qui est des prophètes , que deux ou trois parlent et que les autres jugent"
OUI, il faut donc juger l’erreur, le mal, MAIS non pour condamner car seul le Seigneur a le droit , l’autorité et toute la sagesse pour le faire (ce que faisaient , pourtant , les pharisiens).
Nous devons amener le « prévenu » à réaliser sa situation, à la confesser, à la délaisser et ainsi à en être délivré, à l’image de Jésus qui n’est pas venu pour condamner le pécheur mais pour le sauver !
C’est le mal dans le pécheur qui doit être impitoyablement condamné !
Quand Jésus dit dans Luc 6/37: "ne jugez pas et vous ne serez pas jugés" , il ajoute aussitôt :" ne condamnez point". Ce genre de jugement qui condamne est interdit !
Ce qu’il faut condamner, c’est ce que Paul rappelle aux éphésiens dans Ephésiens 5/10 à 13: "ne prenez pas part aux œuvres infructueuses des ténèbres mais plutôt condamnez les !".
Juger pour séparer le mal du bien selon Dieu, pour séparer l’ivraie du bon grain, l’erreur de la Vérité de Dieu ….. Paul dira même: "l’homme spirituel juge de TOUT" !( 1 Corinthiens 2/15 ).
L'apôtre sera d’ailleurs étonné de cette église à laquelle il dira: "si c’est par vous que le monde est jugé, êtes vous indignes de rendre les moindres jugements ? nous ne jugerions pas les choses de cette vie ?….. " ( 1 Corinthiens 6/2 à 4 ).
Pour résumer il faut donc impérativement juger mais:
1)selon la justice de Dieu (Deutéronome 1/16 )
2) avec droiture de cœur ( Psaumes 58/2 )
3) non selon les apparences ( 1 Samuel 16/7 , Jean 7 /24 )
4) non selon la chair (Jean 8/15 )
5) selon la Vérité et en vue de la paix ( Zacharie 8/16 ); (non pour avoir la paix).
Quelques exemples...
ELI LE SACRIFICATEUR ( 1 Samuel chapitres 2 à 4 )
Eli, un homme qui savait comment ses fils, Hophni et Phinées, se comportaient…..
détournement quant à la viande apportée pour les sacrifices (ch 2 /12 à 17 ), fornication (ch 2 / 22 ), d’ailleurs le texte mentionne qu’ils étaient des hommes pervers (ch 2/12 ).
Certes, Eli leur a fait des remontrances ( ch 2 / 22 à 25 ) , mais c’est tout , il n’y a eu aucune condamnation publique, aucune sanction appliquée par Eli; aussi devant ce laxisme, cette tolérance quant au mal (certainement parce qu’il s’agissait de ses fils), Dieu sera obligé d’intervenir. Il lui dira: "d’où vient que tu honores tes fils plus que moi ?" (ch 2 /29 ).
Dieu dira à Samuel : "il a eu connaissance de leurs crimes , et il ne les a pas réprimés" (ch 3 / 13 ).
Nous connaissons les suites dramatiques … les deux fils d’ Eli seront tués par les philistins et lui-même, à cette nouvelle, mourra subitement !
Attention,donc, lorsqu’il s’agit de quelqu’un qui nous est proche, famille ou amis, de tolérer peu ou prou le mal, de fermer plus ou moins les yeux à la limite l’excuser ou le justifier!
Nous pouvons penser à Gédéon à qui le Seigneur a demandé de détruire l’idôlatrie dans la maison de son père! ( Juges 6 /25 à 32 ).
Nous pourrions ajouter ACAN qui n’ayant pas jugé ses actions condamnables, obligera Dieu à le sanctionner d’une terrible manière. Regardez comment il entraînera, même, toute sa
famille dans la mort ! (Josué ch 7 ) .
Et que dire de SAMSON qui pour n’avoir pas jugé ses continuels mauvais penchants, perdra finalement et la présence de Dieu et la vue et la vie ?! ( Juges ch 13 à 16 ) .
Et que dire de SALOMON qui pour n’avoir pas jugé a approuvé les idôlatries de ses nombreuses femmes étrangères? Il verra Dieu se dresser contre lui, lui susciter des ennemis qu’il n’avait pratiquement jamais eus dans sa vie, lui déchirer son royaume pour le donner à son serviteur ! ( 1 Rois ch 11 ).
Et que dire de David pour son rôle dans cette terrible affaire de meurtre, avec la complicité de Joab (2 Samuel chap 11 ), afin d’éliminer Urie le Hétien pour lui prendre sa femme!
Il cachera, pendant un certain temps, son double péché !
Temps pendant lequel il recueillera Bath-Shéba, la prendra pour femme dont il aura un fils !
Ce n’est que lorsque Dieu lui enverra son prophète Nathan qui le menecera de tout dévoiler et lui annoncera tous les malheurs qui allaient venir sur lui et sur sa maison, qu’alors il confessera son péché et ainsi sauvera sa vie (v14).
Il n’évitera pas pour autant les conséquences de son péché....
Ce fils, produit du crime et de l’adultère mourra !
Ne confondons jamais péché et conséquences du péché !
Bien souvent ni l’aveu, ni la confession du péché n’empêcherons pour autant la réalisation de bien de ses effets...!
Et nous pourrions ajouter bien d’autres exemples....mais déjà avec ceux cités, on peut penser, entre autres à cette pensée de Paul: "si nous nous jugions nous mêmes nous ne serions pas jugés par le Seigneur" ( 1 Corinthiens 11/31 ) .
Ainsi, après ces exemples qui concernaient des individualités, voyons des exemples concernant des collectivités, des groupes, des assemblées, des églises, laxistes dans le domaine du jugement .
On remarque que très vite cette tendance au laxisme face au mal fait son apparition dans les églises et aujourd’hui. Est-ce que certaines désobéissances, certains péchés ne seraient plus considérés comme tels ?
Pourtant , le Seigneur avait été clair pour l’église. A ce sujet on se rappèle l’exemple d’Ananias et de Saphira ! (Actes 5 /1 à 11 ).
Il est vrai que dans cet exemple l’église n’était pas au courant du mensonge, c’est pourquoi le Seigneur a dù trancher de manière radicale le péché commis!
Après que Paul ait implanté l’église de Corinthe, nous remarquons que cette église a vite sombré dans le laxisme, une église qui tolérait la division (quatre clans s’opposaient entre eux) (1 Corinthiens 1 /12 ) qui ne jugeait pas l’orgueil de certains, ( 1 Corinthiens 4 /18 à 21 ), c’est pourquoi d’ailleurs Paul menaçait de le faire. Une église où régnait l’impudicité non condamnée , ( 1 Corinthiens ch 5 ).
Paul est « étonné » de cette attitude face au mal, mal qu’il va juger sans aucune ambiguité !(1 Corinthiens 5/2 à 5 ).
Et que dire du comportement de bien de ces chrétiens face à la Sainte Cène ? (ch 11 v17à 22 ) Paul de rappeler que le mal n’ayant pas été jugé, Dieu a été obligé de le faire, et de quelle manière ! (infirmités , maladies et mortalités ),( 1 Corinthiens 11 /30 ).
Pour terminer, je parlerai, aussi, de certaines églises d’Asie dont nous parle Jean.
Eglises jugées par le Seigneur: l’église de Pergame qui tolérait des gens attachés à la doctrine de Balaam et à celle des Nicolaïtes (Apocalypse 2 /14 et 15 ).
Celle de Thyatire qui laissait « Jézabel » enseigner et séduire les serviteurs, (v 20 et21 ).
Celle de Laodicée qui refusait de voir l’état réel dans lequel elle était et donc de se juger. De ce fait elle était sur le point d’être vomie de la bouche du Seigneur ! ( Apocalypse 3/16 ).
Devant tous ces exemples plus que pédagogiques et éminemment spirituels chacun de nous individuellement, et chaque église collectivement, sont appelés à juger selon la balance de Dieu. Juger selon les critères divins le mal sous toutes ses formes et toutes désobéissances, sans laxisme ni tolérance.
Ne prenons jamais pour de l’amour (selon Dieu ), le fait de fermer les yeux devant le mal, de le tolérer, de l’accepter par « pure bonté d’âme » !

Summary: Modern AU where Female Reader is hired by a kind rich man to drive his grumpy Spanish horse-handler around, as the man refuses to get a license. However, not much driving actually happens, as life on this estate is anything but predictable. (Slow-burn romance, hints of soulmate!au, with an unplanned magic twist towards the end.)

On occasion, I will describe a character as looking pale, but this is not meant to say that all characters are white in skin-tone, as it is my experience that people of color can look pale too.

No kiss. very fine morning F66° in my study and Celsius 19° at 7 am - wrote all but the 1st 5 lines of yesterday till 7 ¼ - wrote copy of letter for A- to Mr Grey - and then went out till breakfast at 9 in ½ hour - then till 10 had Joseph Mann about getting water to the Stump X Inn  - at Wellroyde before breakfast and Tilley holm bridge and had Mawson there giving him orders about bits of wearing and the bit of proposed new cut - on 1st going out gave Charles H- a talking about the stable and made up my mind to set Mr Husband to look after him - told CH. he had perhaps been long enough about the place - people did not do so well when they had been too long - he is a sadly slow idle, dilatory, tho’ clever headed workman for jobs - the moment I leave home nothing goes on as it should do - Had Mr Harper at 10 - walked with him and his clerk to Mytholm mill examined up wheel and run coal of water and water  in the dam, and then walked down to the end of the tail-goit in the Macauley’s field near Dumb mill - much talk about the wheel Mr Harper thinks there would not be water for a 30ft diameter wheel more than 8 months in the year - better to have a 20ft diameter wheel - 3ft. wide at bottom and 3ft. to the centre of the arch in height [enough] for the tail-goit - Mr. Harper from calculating James Howarths’ measurements of the water passing thro’ the 2 guages, that 7 1/2in. deep and 2ft. broad for one 12 hours and half that quantity for the 12 hours (flowing thro’ 3ft. in length per second) would average 8in. thro’ out the 24 hours - this would be wanted for a 20ft. diameter wheel which might have perhaps 15 horse power - the wheel at Mytholm is of this diameter and 5ft. 6in. broad, but tho’ said to be of 15 horse power they can never put more than 10 horse power on it - cannot work of the dam to within 2ft. of water - Mr. Harper said it would be better to lower the wheel-sill so as to let the water fall on the wheel a foot lower and then losing very little power they would be enabled to work the water lower and longer - George R- said (his engineer told us) that if they could get 6in. more water at the top they could work the wheel an hour longer - now the surface of the dam = 2 roods. 20 perches = 3025 yards .:. 3025/2 =1512 ½ cubic ft. of water required to work the wheel one hour - Mr. Harper mentioned a steam engine - I said it would be too great a nuisance but if he could consume the smoke and sublime it into ivory-black I should be satisfied to have it - told him to consider of this - the ivory black works near the great colliery (that open from the day) near St. Etienne had given me the idea - not settled with Booth about the Lodge - should I object to bring a joiner in from York to settle at H-X and to be a timber merchant - no! I should not object but Greenwood being a timber merchant, thought the joiner in question had better keep clear of timber except for his own use - had better make friends with Greenwood who has not a good life - then had Holt while Mr. Harper had Booth - Holt thinks now that the Spiggs loose is very valuable - it will loose 150 acres upper and ditto lower bed i.e. 300 acres which at whatever bought say £50 or £60 per acre should pay me ½ for the Loose - cannot loose more because there is a throw down in Blake-hill - the 2 endings are 80 yards each sort of crossing the road and loosing Samuel Holdsworth’s coal - it would take their men 6 months to drive if they worked night and day, so that I am sure to stop them - then sent Holt to Mr Harper - then A- off on her pony at 3 and I saw Mr Harper again - he will give me his calculations tomorrow for the wheel and goit and wrote to Mr Leather for his opinion - then he had Booth again about the bridge in the wood - not settled when I went out - sauntered in the walk - saw Joseph Mann again - had him just before Mr Harper came this morning - told him to see Holt and being driving for the Staups water immediately - about an hour talking to Marian - then with them  had Mr J.B. Leyland between 5 and 6 who came as desired by Mr Rawson (Christopher) with a parchment for subscriptions to raise £60 for the purchase of his statue of ‘Kilmany’ that he did during his studies in London which statue is to be placed in the new museum - Mr R-‘s name and Mr George Priestley’s was each down for £10 I said it really was not my intention to put my name down for that sum as I had not the pleasure of knowing anything of Mr JB Leyland and therefore I hoped to see the names of some of his more particular friends down immediately (after) those of Messrs. R- and P- but that I wished him success and had in fact no doubt that the subscriptions would soon be made upon - I would have given £5 but would not give £10 and did not like to be 3rd and give less than the first  2 - but gave no hint of all this

Nelson and son and Husband the clerk of the works at 8 ¾  - on Mr N-‘s saying he had brought a letter from Mr Harper and the estimates for Northgate house, I answered at once, I meant Mr Harper to decide as he thought best, but said I would read what he had written - left the people in the little north dining room and ordered them port and came to my study - read Mr Harper’s letter begging me to choose between the 2 parties each equally capable ‘of executing the work and believed each would do it equally well - ‘Brian Helm’s estimate for the whole is

Cravens of York have been over this afternoon and on explaining the matter to them as to their being too late unless I should feel dissatisfied with the states - old Mr. Craven stated that he was sure Nelson would give in a very fair estimate and if he succeeded would answer both my own and my employer’s purpose as well as any man, and in fact so much were Cravens satisfied that they would not be called upon to oppose Nelson, that they said it was no use stopping in H-x to hear the decision and consequently left at 5 o’clock’ - BH- sometime ago owned to Mr. Harper he had never done columns - Nelson has had more experience - I think the bias of Mr. Harper’s mind is for N- so is my own - BH-‘s estimate for the Lodge was high - his estimate for the work at Northgate is higher than N-‘s - I was not 5 minutes in my study reading Mr. Harper’s letter and deciding - I went down instantly - sent for N- senior into the drawing room I said I did not understand his estimating the old materials at only £50 he answered immediately that he had before told Mr. Harper he would give £100 and that he had told his son (N-) so but that he the son had put down £50 - upon this old N- took the estimate and wrote down that ‘it was intended to put down £100 pounds for the ould matearls’ very well said I ‘your estimate for the work is the lower and I therefore think it right to take it - my doing so is no disparagement to Mr. Helm nor any complaint to you - I do not know either party at all - but I think it right to take the lower estimate which is yours’ - begged him to wait a little and I would give him a letter to Mr. Harper - came up immediately and wrote as follows ‘Shibden hall Thursday 30 July 1835. Sir - In consequence of the assurance contained in your letter that you believe each of the 2 parties equally competent to execute the work, and that the one will do it as well as the other, and Mr Nelson senior having said to you and also stated in writing that it was his intention to give £100 for the old materials I feel it right to take the lowest estimate and therefore leave you to make your arrangements to accordingly with Mr Nelson -  It is much to the credit of both parties that the amount of your estimates is so nearly the same -  As I feel myself at  a loss to judge what will be a proper recompense to Mr Helm for his trouble, I hope you will be so good as settle this matter for me. I am sir etc etc  A Lister’     Went downstairs immediately - gave this letter to Mr Nelson and was upstairs again at 9 50 - I had left A- with my father and Marian - I had heard her come upstairs but somehow it had never occurred to me to tell her what I was about - How strange! how unaccountable! all was done, and it was only on seeing her grave countenance on hearing my decision that the strangeness of my never having told her a syllable of it ere it was over, struck me!!! was it absence? I cannot account for it - but my annoyance was deeper than she thought - she fears I shall be talked of for not giving the job to my townsman - it is not this I think of - the decision was right, but that she had no part in it amazes and annoys me - 3 or 4 minutes with my aunt (poorly) till 9 55 - very fine day F70° at 11 1/4 pm

If there’s anything I missed, please let me know so I can add it! As a note, I don't add 'suspicious videos', because there would simply be too many - this list is strictly for full ego appearances and glitches. I also try to limit my glitches since if nothing else happens, it might just be an effect by Robin and doesn't necessarily mean anything.
I hope this list helps out anyone who’s new or those who would like a complete reference list!
If you are new, don’t feel overwhelmed by the amount of stuff on the list. I know from experience that it can be a lot to take in, but don’t worry. Just take things slow, and don’t hesitate to message me or anyone else if you have any questions about the egos or past videos. There are a lot of super nice and incredibly smart theorists in this community who I’m sure would be more than happy to help you out.

Prodigal Son Sunday: 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time
This past Sunday marks one of only two times in the main Lectionary cycle that we hear the Parable of the Prodigal Son proclaimed (the other being the 4th Sunday of Lent Cycle - [C]). The Readings are marked by the theme of repentance and forgiveness.
1. Our First Reading is Ex 32:7-11, 13-14:
The LORD said to Moses, “Go down at once to your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt, for they have become depraved. They have soon turned aside from the way I pointed out to them, making for themselves a molten calf and worshiping it, sacrificing to it and crying out, ‘This is your God, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt!’ “I see how stiff-necked this people is, ” continued the LORD to Moses. Let me alone, then, that my wrath may blaze up against them to consume them. Then I will make of you a great nation.”
The context of this First Reading is immediately after the “Golden Calf” incident. To recap, God had sent Moses to the Israelites as they were enslaved in Egypt, and through might miracles brought them out of Egypt and into the Sinai desert, to Mount Sinai itself, where he entered into a solemn covenant with them (Exod 19-24, esp. ch. 24). A covenant is the extension of kinship by oath, so God’s covenant with Israel at Sinai (Exod 24) formed Israel into God’s children, his family. A blood ritual solemnized the covenant, as Moses splashed blood on both God’s altar and the people, symbolizing that God and the people were now one blood. But the blood ceremony also had a more ominous symbolism: “if I break the covenant, may my blood be shed, like this shed blood now being splashed on me.”
Forty days later, while Moses was on Mt. Sinai receiving instructions for the building of the Tabernacle, the people of Israel defected from the covenant and broke their whole relationship with God. They built themselves an idol of a bull calf, probably representing the Egyptian god Apis whom they had once worshiped along the banks of the Nile. By breaking the covenant, they triggered on themselves the curse-meaning of the blood of the covenant: “may my blood be shed if I break my commitment…” That is why God says, “Let me alone … that my wrath may … consume them.” It is not the loss of God’s temper. It is God enforcing the terms of the covenant, which He is bound in justice to do. God tests Moses in this situation, creating the opportunity for Moses to intercede for the people, the opportunity for Moses to be like Christ. God says, “I will make of you a great nation.” This was the promise given to Abraham (Gen 12:2) so long ago. Thus, God is offering to “rewind” salvation history and start over with Moses as a new Abraham.
But Moses implored the LORD, his God, saying, “Why, O LORD, should your wrath blaze up against your own people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt with such great power and with so strong a hand? Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, and how you swore to them by your own self, saying, ‘I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky; and all this land that I promised, I will give your descendants as their perpetual heritage.’” So the LORD relented in the punishment he had threatened to inflict on his people.
Moses rises to the opportunity to be a Christ-like intercessor for the people of God. Moses’ main argument is significant: “Remember your servant(s) Abraham … how you swore to them by your own self…” There is only one place earlier in Scripture where God explicitly swears by his own self, and that is Genesis 22:15-18, the great oath which God swears to Abraham after Abraham offers to God his “only begotten son” (RSVCE2). That is the great passage of the near-sacrifice of Isaac, called “the Aqedah” (“the Binding [of Isaac]”) in the Jewish tradition. It is the most important type or foreshadowing of Calvary in the Old Testament. One might just call it “the Calvary of the Old Testament.” It is crucial to recognize that at this pivotal moment in the history of God’s people, where they face deserved destruction for apostasy from God, Moses’ succeeds in his intercession by pleading Calvary, by appealing to the covenant that was re-affirmed after the willing sacrifice of the “only begotten son.” God affirms the validity of Moses’ appeal, and “relents” from punishment. God knew in his foreknowledge that he would do this, but he chose to include Moses in his plan of mercy for Israel, allowing Moses to take an active role in the administration of God’s forgiveness. He does this for us, too.
2. The Responsorial Psalm is Ps 51:3-4, 12-13, 17, 19:
R. (Lk 15:18) I will rise and go to my father.
Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness; in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense. Thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me. R. I will rise and go to my father.
A clean heart create for me, O God, and a steadfast spirit renew within me. Cast me not out from your presence, and your Holy Spirit take not from me. R. I will rise and go to my father.
O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall proclaim your praise. My sacrifice, O God, is a contrite spirit; a heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not spurn. R. I will rise and go to my father.
Psalm 51 is THE great psalm of repentance in the entire psalter, used in the Lectionary and the Liturgy of the Hours at those times in the Church calendar that most call for acts of contrition. Psalm 51 is attributed to David, upon the occasion of his repentance after having been rebuked by Nathan the prophet for killing Uriah and taking Bathsheba as his wife by force.
David’s words have resounded on the lips of repentant believers down through the centuries, unrivaled for bluntness and sincerity. David prays for “a clean heart” which God alone can “create” for him—it is not possible by human power. David had acted like Israel at the Golden Calf. Both David and Israel were recipients of covenants: Israel in Exodus 24, David in 2 Samuel 7. Both had the status of “sons of God” (Exod 4:22; PS 89:20-27). Both succumbed to sexual temptation (David with Bathsheba, 2 Sam 11; Israel when they “rose up to play,” a sexual euphemism Exod 32:6). Unlike Israel, David repents when rebuked. He returns to seek the LORD, whereas Israel would have continued astray had it not been for Moses. In this way, David represents an advance in spiritual understanding over against the behavior of Israel as a whole.
3. The Second Reading is 1 Tm 1:12-17:
Beloved: I am grateful to him who has strengthened me, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he considered me trustworthy in appointing me to the ministry. I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and arrogant, but I have been mercifully treated because I acted out of ignorance in my unbelief. Indeed, the grace of our Lord has been abundant, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Of these I am the foremost. But for that reason I was mercifully treated, so that in me, as the foremost, Christ Jesus might display all his patience as an example for those who would come to believe in him for everlasting life. To the king of ages, incorruptible, invisible, the only God, honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
The Lectionary is marching through St. Paul’s letters to individuals right now, and last week we read from Philemon. This week we read from the beginning of his first letter to Timothy, and the selection could scarcely fit better the themes of this Sunday’s Mass. Here we are reminded that St. Paul himself—like David, like Israel—was a great offender against God, who received mercy. Paul calls himself “the foremost” of sinners. Truly the company of the saints is better thought of as the assembly of those who embraced mercy, rather than of those who never needed it.
Gospel Luke 15:1-32:
Tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus, but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” So to them he addressed this parable.
The Pharisees are offended that Jesus associates with “sinners,” not recognizing it to be a God-like trait, since God associated with sinners all through the Old Testament. In fact, Judah and his descendants included some of the worst of sinners.
“What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it? And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance.
“Or what woman having ten coins and losing one would not light a lamp and sweep the house, searching carefully until she finds it? And when she does find it, she calls together her friends and neighbors and says to them, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found the coin that I lost.’ In just the same way, I tell you, there will be rejoicing among the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
Jesus prefaces his great parable of the “lost son” with two smaller, down-to-earth examples from everyday life about the joy of finding something that was lost. The phrase “there will be rejoicing among the angels of God” is actually a bit of a mistranslation. It is literally, “there will be rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God.” It is not the angels who are rejoicing, per se. Someone else is rejoicing in front of the angels. Who is that? God Himself. But in keeping with Jewish piety, Jesus using circumlocutions to speak of the divine rejoicing.
Then he said, “A man had two sons, and the younger son said to his father, ‘Father give me the share of your estate that should come to me.’ So the father divided the property between them. After a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings and set off to a distant country where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation. When he had freely spent everything, a severe famine struck that country, and he found himself in dire need. So he hired himself out to one of the local citizens who sent him to his farm to tend the swine. And he longed to eat his fill of the pods on which the swine fed, but nobody gave him any. Coming to his senses he thought, ‘How many of my father’s hired workers have more than enough food to eat, but here am I, dying from hunger. I shall get up and go to my father and I shall say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son; treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers.”’ So he got up and went back to his father. While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him. His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I no longer deserve to be called your son.’ But his father ordered his servants, ‘Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Take the fattened calf and slaughter it. Then let us celebrate with a feast, because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.’ Then the celebration began. Now the older son had been out in the field and, on his way back, as he neared the house, he heard the sound of music and dancing. He called one of the servants and asked what this might mean. The servant said to him, ‘Your brother has returned and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’ He became angry, and when he refused to enter the house, his father came out and pleaded with him. He said to his father in reply, ‘Look, all these years I served you and not once did I disobey your orders; yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on with my friends. But when your son returns, who swallowed up your property with prostitutes, for him you slaughter the fattened calf.’ He said to him, ‘My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours. But now we must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.’”
This parable may be read in two ways. On the basic level, it is a story of forgiveness and reconciliation that teaches us about the character of God and his love for sinners. On a secondary level, it is a parable about the history of Israel. Israel divided into two kingdoms: the northern kingdom of “Ephraim” (the adopted youngest son of Jacob) and the southern kingdom of “Judah” (the son of Jacob who inherited the rights of the oldest son). Ephraim went astray and was taken into exile by Assyria (a far country). Judah, however, was only exiled for 70 years and then returned to stay by God’s “side” in the land of Israel. However, in the end it is “Ephraim” who returns to embrace God, while “Judah” resents God’s mercy.
This fits a theme through Luke-Acts, in which Luke shows that Samaritans (direct descendants of the northern kingdom “Ephraim”) and Gentiles (among whom other northern Israelites had assimilated) respond to the offer of God’s forgiveness in the Gospel, whereas the “Judeans”, descendants of southern Judah, resist the Gospel out of pride, and resent the Christian offer of a the “new covenant” to Samaritan and Gentile “sinners.”
Today’s Gospel speaks to us in two practical ways, depending on which “son” we are. Some of us at Mass this Sunday are the younger son, who have been going astray rather self-consciously. We “younger sons” need to be reassured of God’s forgivness. We need to pick up and leave the pig slop we’ve been wallowing in (whether that be substance abuse, porn, financial corruption, promiscuity, manipulation, etc.) and return to God, who is waiting to embrace us.
[Let us notice that the Father does not run after the son to the far country and pull him out of the muck. There is an act of repentance and renunciation that we must undertake before we can return to the Father. We do have to leave the pig sty.]
Others of us at Mass are the older brother. We think we are good, not in need of forgiveness, and God owes us something. We resent riff-raff hanging around, and in particular don’t want them in our churches or other places where we hang out.
We older brothers have no joy in our lives, because we really aren’t motivated by love, and don’t understand the God of love and joy. We need conversion as much as the younger son. We need to recognize “younger sons” as siblings, as family members, and share God’s joy at their repentance and reconciliation. God is not a businessman rewarding service in a tit-for-tat or quid-pro-quo manner. God is a father, who wants all his sons to share his love and joy.

Surrealism and Experimental Drama

 Beginning around the late nineteenth century, avant-garde art set out to decenter the human mind--from conscious to unconscious thought, from waking to dreaming, from belief to performance.   What happened is not an exchange of one set for the other, but a destabilization of the relation between real and imagined life which the “surreal” object and surreal experience exemplified.  Yoda’s advice, “there is no try,” is the practical result of this destabilization: any act is potentially art and any art can transform us and the world.  Surrealist painting and film, experimental poetry and drama, avant-garde photography, and early newspaper comics were part of this movement.  Artists and writers responded around the world to the political and imaginative potential of the movement.  We will study fiction, memoir, poetry, drama, photography, painting, video art, sculpture, newspaper comics, and film, together with theories of relation to the object, to explore surrealist ideas. 
Assignments: 3 short response papers (readings or interpretations of a work from the course), 1 in-class presentation, and a final project (about a secret object), or five total, each counted as 20% of the grade). Attendance is required; 4 absences are allowed, after which the course grade is negatively affected.  
 CL140 is a safe space for LGBTQ students.  Comp Lit and the UC support and protect students without documents.

no kiss very fine morning F66° in my study and Celsius 19° at 7 am - wrote all but the 1st 5 lines of yesterday till 7 ¼ - wrote copy of letter for A- to Mr Grey - and then went out till breakfast at 9 in ½ hour - then till 10 had Joseph Mann about getting water to the Stump X Inn  - at Wellroyde before breakfast and Tilley holm bridge and had Mawson there giving him orders about bits of wearing and the bit of proposed new cut - on 1st going out gave Charles H- a talking about the stable and made up my mind to set Mr Husband to look after him - told CH- he had perhaps been long enough about the place - people did not do so well when they had been too long - he is a sadly slow idle, dilatory, tho’ clever headed workman for jobs - the moment I leave home nothing goes on as it should do - Had Mr Harper at 10 - walked with him and his clerk to Mytholm mill examined up wheel and run coal of water and water  in the dam, and then walked down to the end of the tail-goit in the Macauley’s field near Dumb mill - much talk about the wheel Mr Harper thinks there would not be water for a 30ft. diameter wheel more than 8 months in the year - better to have a 20ft. diameter wheel - 3ft. wide at bottom and 3ft. to the centre of the arch in height [enough] for the tail-goit - Mr. Harper from calculating James Howarths’ measurements of the water passing thro’ the 2 guages, that 7 1/2in. deep and 2ft. broad for one 12 hours and half that quantity for the 12 hours (flowing thro’ 3ft. in length per second) would average 8in. thro’ out the 24 hours - this would be wanted for a 20ft. diameter wheel which might have perhaps 15 horse power - the wheel at Mytholm is of this diameter and 5ft. 6in. broad, but tho’ said to be of 15 horse power they can never put more than 10 horse power on it - cannot work of the dam to within 2ft. of water - Mr. Harper said it would be better to lower the wheel-sill so as to let the water fall on the wheel a foot lower and then losing very little power they would be enabled to work the water lower and longer - George R- said (his engineer told us) that if they could get 6in. more water at the top they could work the wheel an hour longer - now the surface of the dam = 2 roods. 20 perches = 3025 yards .:. 3025/2 =1512 ½ cubic ft. of water required to work the wheel one hour - Mr. Harper mentioned a steam engine - I said it would be too great a nuisance but if he could consume the smoke and sublime it into ivory-black I should be satisfied to have it - told him to consider of this - the ivory black works near the great colliery (that open from the day) near St. Etienne had given me the idea - not settled with Booth about the Lodge - should I object to bring a joiner in from York to settle at H-x and to be a timber merchant - no! I should not object but Greenwood being a timber merchant, thought the joiner in question had better keep clear of timber except for his own use - had better make friends with Greenwood who has not a good life - then had Holt while Mr. Harper had Booth - Holt thinks now that the Spiggs loose is very valuable - it will loose 150 acres upper and ditto lower bed i.e. 300 acres which at whatever bought say £50 or £60 per acre should pay me ½ for the Loose - cannot loose more because there is a throw down in Blake-hill - the 2 endings are 80 yards each sort of crossing the road and loosing Samuel Holdsworth’s coal - it would take their men 6 months to drive if they worked night and day, so that I am sure to stop them - then sent Holt to Mr Harper - then A- off on her pony at 3 and I saw Mr Harper again - he will give me his calculations tomorrow for the wheel and goit and wrote to Mr Leather for his opinion - then he had Booth again about the bridge in the wood - not settled when I went out - sauntered in the walk - saw Joseph Mann again - had him just before Mr Harper came this morning - told him to see Holt and being driving for the Staups water immediately - about an hour talking to Marian - then with them  had Mr J.B. Leyland between 5 and 6 who came as desired by Mr Rawson (Christopher) with a parchment for subscriptions to raise £60 for the purchase of his statue of ‘Kilmany’ that he did during his studies in London which statue is to be placed in the new museum - Mr R-‘s name and Mr George Priestley’s was each down for £10 I said it really was not my intention to put my name down for that sum as I had not the pleasure of knowing anything of Mr JB. Leyland and therefore I hoped to see the names of some of his more particular friends down immediately (after) those of Messrs. R- and P- but that I wished him success and had in fact no doubt that the subscriptions would soon be made upon - I would have given £5 but would not give £10 and did not like to be 3rd and give less than the first  2 - but gave no hint of all this

Nelson and son and Husband the clerk of the works at 8 ¾  - on Mr N-‘s saying he had brought a letter from Mr Harper and the estimates for Northgate house, I answered at once, I meant Mr Harper to decide as he thought best, but said I would read what he had written - left the people in the little north dining room and ordered them port and came to my study - read Mr Harper’s letter begging me to choose between the 2 parties each equally capable ‘of executing the work and believed each would do it equally well - ‘Brian Helm’s estimate for the whole is

I have explained the matter both to Helm and to Nelson - they know the amount of each other’s estimate and I have explained to both that you will say which is to have it’ - ‘if Nelson is to have it, I should, Mr. H- thinks, allow BH. a fair compensation for his trouble ‘and Nelson ought to reduce his estimate so much below Helm’s as to cover what you might allow Helm’ - ...... ‘I will mention 1 circumstance in Nelson’s favour - Messrs. Cravens of York have been over this afternoon and on explaining the matter to them as to their being too late unless I should feel dissatisfied with the states - old Mr. Craven stated that he was sure Nelson would give in a very fair estimate and if he succeeded would answer both my own and my employer’s purpose as well as any man, and in fact so much were Cravens satisfied that they would not be called upon to oppose Nelson, that they said it was no use stopping in H-x to hear the decision and consequently left at 5 o’clock’ - BH- sometime ago owned to Mr. Harper he had never done columns - Nelson has had more experience - I think the bias of Mr. Harper’s mind is for N- so is my own - BH-‘s estimate for the Lodge was high - his estimate for the work at Northgate is higher than N-‘s - I was not 5 minutes in my study reading Mr. Harper’s letter and deciding - I went down instantly - sent for N- senior into the drawing room I said I did not understand his estimating the old materials at only £50 he answered immediately that he had before told Mr. Harper he would give £100 and that he had told his son (N-) so but that he the son had put down £50 - upon this old N- took the estimate and wrote down that ‘it was intended to put down £100 pounds for the ould matearls’ very well said I ‘your estimate for the work is the lower and I therefore think it right to take it - my doing so is no disparagement to Mr. Helm nor any complaint to you - I do not know either party at all - but I think it right to take the lower estimate which is yours’ - begged him to wait a little and I would give him a letter to Mr. Harper - came up immediately and wrote as follows ‘Shibden hall Thursday 30 July 1835 - Sir - In consequence of the assurance contained in your letter that you believe each of the 2 parties equally competent to execute the work, and that the one will do it as well as the other, and Mr Nelson senior having said to you and also stated in writing that it was his intention to give £100 for the old materials I feel it right to take the lowest estimate and therefore leave you to make your arrangements to accordingly with Mr Nelson -  It is much to the credit of both parties that the amount of your estimates is so nearly the same -  As I feel myself at  a loss to judge what will be a proper recompense to Mr Helm for his trouble, I hope you will be so good as settle this matter for me. I am sir etc etc  A Lister’     Went downstairs immediately - gave this letter to Mr Nelson and was upstairs again at 9 50 - I had left A- with my father and Marian - I had heard her come upstairs but somehow it had never occurred to me to tell her what I was about - How strange! how unaccountable! all was done, and it was only on seeing her grave countenance on hearing my decision that the strangeness of my never having told her a syllable of it ere it was over, struck me!!! was it absence? I cannot account for it - but my annoyance was deeper than she thought - she fears I shall be talked of for not giving the job to my townsman - it is not this I think of - the decision was right, but that she had no part in it amazes and annoys me - 3 or 4 minutes with my aunt (poorly) till 9 55 - very fine day F70° at 11 1/4 pm

Sorry for some reason I can't properly format my response in ask format, so have done a separate post. Lol, if no one asked anything I was contemplating being self-indulgent and answering them all anyway... @hetamariar
1) What is your favourite book and/or book series of all time?
That is such a hard question as I love many books, plus I have had different favourites over time. I am going to have to say Pratchett’s Discworld series, because there are so many books and they are all different, yet all somewhat connect to tell a story. Some are more enjoyable than others, but all of them are fiercely ALIVE, to me all the characters seem so real. I’ve read the books over time since my first sample (the Death trilogy omnibus from a Fantasy and Sci-Fi bookclub when I was about 14), and it feels wrong that there will never be any more stories. I always say my favourite of the series is Monstrous Regiment, though there are a couple of others that make it to a close second.
2) What is the longest book you have ever read? How many pages?
I think that would be an English translation of The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu, at 1089 pages, which took me an entire summer to get through. I do own the supposedly longest book written in the English language; Clarissa by Samuel Richardson (the Penguin edition runs to 1536 pages) but have yet to read it.
10) What is a book that you own more than one copy of?
Generally I don’t buy multiple editions of books unless it’s by accident, as I don’t have the storage space to waste. Not that I haven’t been tempted by some of the fancy editions out there. If comics/graphic novels count, I own Volumes 1-3 of The Sandman in trade paperback and as a collected volume as part of the Ultimate Sandman collection because the collection is pretty but an absolute ballache to actually read.
11) What horror book made you really scared?
I can’t really remember being properly scared by a book to be honest. I tend to be scared or unsettled more by visual images than anything I imagine in my own head. I did find reading Dark Matter by Michelle Paver a very unsettling experience though, as well as several of Susan Hill’s ghost stories (particularly The Woman in Black and The Man in the Picture).
12) What book do you passionately hate?
James Joyce’s The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Or anything he’s written. I detest most of the Modernist canon writers save the poets, but Joyce, I hate Joyce. Put some punctuation in there ffs.
17) What is your favourite book that contains an LGBTQ+ character?
Canonwise it would be Affinity by Sarah Waters; the main character is a lesbian, as is at least two of the other secondary characters.
24) How many bookshelves do you own?
Okay, I have a slim unit downstairs by the computer that is meant to be a DVD unit but is mostly full of books, there is also a dark wood unit in my parents’ room that is technically mine but Dad has appropriated it for now because I keep buying him books as presents and he needed somewhere to keep them. In my room I have a wall-to-almost-ceiling corner unit bookshelf, a large wide 5 shelf bookcase, and a smaller 3 shelf one under my window by the bed. Most of my books are simply stacked in piles everywhere though.
35) What three books are you most looking forward to reading this year?
I have a book on Yuurei that I am itching to get on to but can’t take around with me because I don’t want to damage it, and I have promised myself I will finally read Maplecroft and An English Ghost Story this year. Also, I still have to read Leia: Princess of Aldaaran as I swore I wouldn’t start another Star Wars book until I finally finish the TFA novelization. So four, but oh well.
37) Have you read a book in a different language? What was it?
Unfortunately not, as I am not fluent enough in any other language to manage reading a full book. Unless it was a child’s picture book.
40) What is the weirdest book you have read?
Oh, man. I read some weird books for my degree – I still have no idea what White Noise was actually about, or City of Glass for that matter. By choice, all of William Gibson’s work is pretty out-there, but the Blue Ant trilogy spun me out so much because it is plausible near-future or possibly even ‘secretly happening now’ future.  Mind you, it depends what people class as weird, because to some my books on Victorian sexuality, the history of Satanism and the science of fear would be considered weird. In fact, my dad tends to refer to most of my books as ‘your weirdy books’. I don’t take it personally as he is a war film, Western, and detective fiction sort of person.
50) What book got you into reading?
I will give the credit to Owl Babies. It’s the first book I really remember reading, and it has had a profound effect on me. Even today, if Mum or I see a photo or sculpture of three owls of the right respective sizes, one of us will go “I want my mummy!” in a theatrically worried and frightened voice.
