Rules and terminology of roleplaying with people

While roleplaying is a fun medium that is mostly a free place for people to express their creativity, there are some rules, terminology and regulations that you would have to follow, to have a good reputation in the roleplay community, and if you want to attract experienced roleplayers to you.

Let's start off by a few sites I use to roleplay

SITES

Aniroleplay - a good place to roleplay, mostly consists of people playing original characters or characters from animated media.

Roleplay.me - much more populated than Aniroleplay, and quite fun, for me personally. My preferred rp site. You will find a fix of real life and animated characters on there, though most people play their original characters.

Flist - mostly adult rp site, but if you're looking for that? That's gonna be perfect. It can be a bit difficult to navigate at first, but after you get it, it's wonderful. The profile making is very in depth, so that's fun too.

Quotev - this is mostly a reading site, like wattpad, but what makes this different is the group option, which is mostly used by people to roleplay. This will be the most different style of roleplay, if you've never roleplayed before. I'll explain more later in the post. There are two methods to find a rp on here. Either write the Fandom you want in the Quotev search bar and go into group section, or write on the Google search bar Quotev directory and look through them. Roleplayers have made up directories to find rp groups much easier!

Tumblr - another unconventional rp platform. It's quite common for people to set up accounts as a character and interact with others like that. It's a fun way to interact with the community and at the same time, roleplay.

Those are the main places I roleplay on. Now, I want to share some of my "wisdom" about the unspoken rules I learned of rping with others and some terms you might encounter, which might confuse you.

RULES

- preferably, use third person. On cai you will most likely use second or first person to roleplay. That's a big no no for rping with real people. It makes your reply look cheap and most don't enjoy that format.

Second pov (you ate ice cream) (using you as the pronoun to talk about your character)

Third pov (he ate ice cream)

- make your reply descriptive, use various words. Don't use the same words, or make the reply simple. The fancier or better sounding the better. It makes people excited to reply, and makes them add more flavor to their text. People aren't like ai, they like substance.

- one paragraph and up. The more you write, the better. Sure, you can discuss to rp in shorter sentences, but the rp will grow stale and you will get dropped, or drop the person.

- space your stuff with paragraphs. Don't wrote everything in one huge block of text. It's hard to read and people will not want to rp if you make it hard for them

- don't rp in script. I'll explain what script is, but the rp usually gets stale fast, and no descriptive rper wants to rp with a scripter.

- don't interrupt 1x1 rps. I'll explain what that means later down. It's rude and you can get people mad at you.

- don't control what the other person does. It's annoying, and will quickly get you a bad reputation in the rp community, and you might start seeing that good quality rpers don't want to roleplay with you.

- There is a social dynamic in rp communities, especially aniroleplay and roleplay.me. If you are an asshole, impatient or create mary sue characters, you will start getting rejected for rps by high quality roleplayers.

- Be patient. These are people you're roleplaying with. They will not reply to you as quality as AI does. It might take hours, maybe a day or longer. It's just how this shit goes.

- Read the person's profile. They might have rules, original character information or just other stuff you might need to know before you can roleplay with them.

- Don't jump straight into a rp from the get-go, unless the account says they accept starter greetings. Discuss the rp beforehand and make sure your partner is okay with what you want to do. If you want to do nsfw roleplays, discuss it beforehand as many people are uncomfy with that sort of stuff.

- When discussing stuff outside of roleplay, add a little marker to make it clear you're talking out of character.

- They are not your friends, so don't make the first message you write something like "hi, how're you?". You guys are here for rp, so get to the point. If they have rules, include that you read them, and if you have a specific idea you wanted to try with them, include that in the message. Make the rp idea no longer than 4 sentences, as you can discuss the details together later.

- Avoid sending prewritten greetings. It's very easy to notice when you are doing that, especially if it's a long message. If you have to gave a prewritten greeting, keep it short, and add more info to it, based on the profile you are contacting.

- Don't use text language in rp. It makes your reply seem cheap and can turn a lot of people off. It also takes out the soul of your reply.

TERMINOLOGY

Double up - It's a style of roleplay where you play two point of views. One being your original character and the other is the love interest of your rp partner. This is a popular roleplay style on quotev.

1x1 - It's when you rp one on one with someone. It's in other words, a private roleplay.

group rp - It's when you roleplay with multiple people at the same time, in the same roleplay, each taking a role, and adding onto each other. *I don't personally like this, as it can get messy*

rp - stands for roleplay

pov - stands for "point of view". I explain the different povs in an earlier part of the post.

AU - Alternative universe.

"You add, you message first" - Something you will often see on accounts that take a more serious approach to roleplaying. It means that If you add them, you will have to message them first, or they will delete you out of their friend list.

Script - It's a style of writing.

Mary sue/Gary stu - cliche characters that usually make your character overpowered, or not fit in the setting at all.

godmodding - Taking control of your partner's character. Very frowned upon.

IC - It means "In character". It means the person will talk to you as their character.

OOC - It means "Out of character". This person will talk to you simply, not playing their roleplaying character.

OC - It means "Original character". It's the character you play, if you create them.

Admin - A term used when a person has more than one rp account. It's usual that you only contact and rp with one of the accounts under that one admin.

PSA & Heads Up...

Cool, so one of my rps is being slandered by someone who was just removed from the group for being unnecessarily rude and disrespectful. I’m sick of ooc RP drama/bullshit. I feel fortunate enough that in the near-6 months that my group, Matched has been open, that this is the only instance of ooc drama that has occurred. Which I am hopeful will speak louder volumes on the vibe and members of my group than what 1 or 2 people who might think otherwise.

Here’s what happened though (receipts below the cut):

2 ex-members were added in my rp 5 days ago. For briefness, I’ll refer to them as A & E here.

The 2 sent their blogs just under the 24 hr window. I sent a link to our ooc Discord immediately after (as I always do; we keep ooc content off the dash).

2 days later, no response about the Discord link but the ex-members had posted on the dash. E had made an ooc post on our dash which isn’t allowed (per the RP rules). When I IM’d her about it, and the Discord link, she deleted the ooc post but made no response about the Discord.

I reached out again to A, to see if she needed another link to the Discord since those links have a short shelf life. No response.

The same evening, E was sent an ask message relating to our group’s task for this month (a game of Truth or Dare). While E initially responded to the ask “Fuck off.” and “so stupid” in the tag, I messaged E to let them know that the ask was for our July task. E changed her response to the message but still gave no response to anything.

Yesterday, I sent an identical message to both A & E--my last attempt at hopefully hearing back about the Discord. If neither were interested in joining the Discord, that would be fine. Say that. But nothing at all was said.

I was prepared to leave the matter alone. Despite finding the situation very odd, particularly when it came to E (I have been RPing for nearly 15 years; I’ve admined/co-admined several groups and I have never had nor heard of anybody just blatantly ignoring messages from a main/an admin), there was no point in me continuing to make efforts to communicate with 0 response. 

Coming home from work today, I had a response from A, however, which was what prompted my deciding to remove them. They responded as though they did not care, but proceeded to tag my group in a post saying that the rp is terrible and ‘warning’ people not to join it.

Folks, just a little PSA because again, I’m sick of RPC drama, petty bullshit, and folks who can’t/won’t talk reasonably to each other.

But if you are honestly too busy, to tell an admin of any group you just joined of your own volition, something as simple as, “No, thank you.” or “I actually don’t have Discord” or “Hey I’ve been pretty busy lately. I’ll let you know soon.” Or if you decide not to mention in an application where it asks about your activity, that you’ve got a busy life or might not actually be on as much as you’re claiming that you will be as soon as you’ve joined, it might be a good idea to self-regulate and not join an RP group. In my experience (as an admin and as a member of RPGs) admins are generally pretty understanding. We know that RP’s not anyone’s whole life, but from an admin’s standpoint if you’re applying to a group, it’s implied that you’re good with the content on the RP’s main (rules, app, plot, setting, etc.). Indies are great. 1x1s are great. Groups that don’t use Discord as an additional source/resousrce are great. One of the beauties about roleplaying is that there are several options out there. But please be respectful of whatever option you’re choosing to take part in!

So yeah. There you have it. I left out my receipts from E (Emilia) because they weren’t really as relevant here to the slander. But I’ve had others who have been rpg admins and members of rpgs who have unanimously agreed with how rude and uncalled for the responses had been from Alexa.

So, since I created a THREAD TRACKER now I’ll be able to have large scale threads and be able to track them without them getting lost into the abyss. Now, before I begin, I want to note the difference between normal interactions and actual threads. Normal interactions are usually normal conversations and the like, while threads are usually - but not always - longer, more fleshed out and developed scenarios between our muses - whether it be in a canon setting or in an alternate universe or a crossover. There doesn’t necessarily have to be a plot involved, but it’s definitely encouraged and it makes things easier to move! There are a few regulations I’ll need to bring down before we begin writing a thread, though: 

There MUST be a name to our thread! It doesn’t have to be anything fancy but it’s just so we don’t end up losing the thread. The thread name will be tagged whenever content of said thread is introduced. 

There has to be a summary of the RP, of who’s involved, what the thread is about and what happens or what is going to happen. Let me make this clear: threads aren’t for “winging it” unless if it’s an open roleplay. 

Although the thread tracker is usually for 1x1 roleplays, I definitely encourage group roleplay threads, as in more than two muns roleplaying their muses and/or two muns each portraying more than two muses in a thread. Sometimes 1x1 roleplays can be rather limiting in some aspects, the more the merrier! Just let us know otherwise if you want to join and we can totally talk about it!

There needs to be a verse in place, be it in a canon setting or in an alternate universe, a crossover - I genuinely don’t mind! Not all my threads have to be related to a certain fandom, this is a multifandom blog after all and I’m open to ideas! I am alternate universe and crossover friendly and I highly encourage interactions in other fandoms.

Beware, in some of these threads, there WILL be mature content and / or spoilers so tread at your own risk! If you, the other mun involved in a thread, feel uncomfortable about something, we can talk about it in IM’s. Sometimes, roleplays can be unpredictable and I want my friends to feel secure and happy! For individuals who read the thread, there will be triggers added if necessary. 

There are different types of threads: Open and Private. Open roleplays are basically a free-for-all and anyone’s allowed to join in, whether or not it can turn into a group roleplay is entirely up to the muns. Private roleplays are specifically between myself and another mun and their muse - though this can be with more than one person - and thus anyone who isn’t involved are not allowed to write in that thread unless if you get all of the mun’s permission. 

On the topic of different types of threads, there are also SFW ( Safe For Work ) and NSFW ( Not Safe For Work ) threads. SFW threads are basically threads where none-triggering content occurs there, such as normal and casual bonding, adventures and conversations or platonic and romantic endeavors. NSFW threads are threads that may have mature and possibly triggering content, including but not limited to sex, blood, gore, war, kidnapping, excessive violence and the like. I require for my partners to please put any NSFW content underneath the cut and add trigger warnings in their tags, not necessarily for my sake, but for other individuals. 

There are three different states that a RP in this thread tracker can take: Ongoing ( both in green for actively ongoing and in yellow for slowly ongoing or if it’s put on hold for whatever reason ), Complete, and Unfinished. If there is an ongoing thread in green, it means that it is still active and ongoing, if there is an ongoing thread in yellow, it means that it’s either being put on hold for whatever reason or one or both of the muns are on hiatus and it is thus being put on hold. Unfinished threads are highlighted in red, meaning that for whatever reason, the thread ended up being dropped and unless agreed upon otherwise by the respective muns, will not be picked up again. Complete threads are for threads that have been wrapped up and will be put on display for good old times’ sake. If you want to drop a thread, please IM me and we can discuss it.

After three months of no one responding, unless if there’s a hiatus or something going on, then the thread will be labeled as unfinished.

We can have as many threads as you want but once a thread is longer than two paragraphs (medium sized), it sometimes takes me 948728923660700 years to gain motivation for it. It will literally exhaust the hell out of me, but I am not against longer threads, in fact, I totally encourage them. It just takes me way longer to gather muse, time, and motivation to respond to them. If we have a longer thread together, I expect you to be patient as hell.

Please, for the love of god, if you like this post, knowing good and well that you want a plotted thread with me, PLEASE HAVE AT LEAST AN IDEA IN MIND AND PUT IN THE EFFORT WHEN IT COMES TO PLOTTING. Listen, I’ve been there and I know it’s hard to plot sometimes but there’s nothing more annoying and/or frustrating than trying to plot with someone who’s only contributions are either agreeing with your ideas and/or going “I don’t know” whenever you ask for their input. Like, I’m sorry, but it’s not my job to come up with literally EVERYTHING and do everything for you, there has to be mutual cooperation. I promise I’m never gonna tell you your ideas are stupid or whatever, I just want to plot with people who actually WANT to bounce ideas back and forth and discuss them and stuff, otherwise, I hate to break it to you, or it’s not gonna get very far.

RULES FOR 1x1 RPING ( If anyone wants to write with me and not a guide of suggestions thing ).

These are subject to change but as of right now,  I think this is a good starting point.

My writing partners must be +18.  I’m an adult myself  (age is about to change because birthday coming up) and have been for a few years.

Not into writing smut.  I’ve done it and have enjoyed writing it BUT for now I would like to have that door closed firmly and maybe revisit it in a year or so.

Fade to the black method used at this time.

Not a fan of 1 liners unless it is a text thread.  I tend to get bored easily with something really small.

Don’t ask me to join a group with your friends that has just started,  has been established, etc.  It feels really weird to come in and be the only one that doesn’t know anyone (Besides the person inviting).  If the group hasn’t started then maybe you could slide it in to me and I will at least check it out.

I have been writing in the TVD world for a long while so I like to keep things supernatural based.  Maybe a few OC x OC things but if we could do canon x oc?  That would be amazing too.

Caroline Forbes,  Hope Mikaelson,  Lizzie Saltzman,  Hayley Marshall,  Seylah Chelon,  Freya Mikaelson, etc are the characters I’ve played and are the most comfortable with in terms of tvd.

Elena Gilbert,  Vicki Donavan,  Josie Saltzman, Penelope Park,  etc are ones I would be willing to write if you wanted.

Stelena, Steroline, Klaroline,  Handon,  Hosie,  Hizzie, Posie (AU settings only),  Jandon, Mizzie, Rizzie, Klayley,  etc are okay ships for me for sure.

I have no real rules yet for oc x oc interactions or anything because I have not done ocs in a long time.  If you are interested in that let me know.

As far as triggers go?  A lot of it is subjective on me and how I am doing at that moment in time.  Some days are harder than others but I am responsible for my own experience and might take a few days to reply back if it is a bad day.

Mania  (mostly when I am manic or in the way of making fun of it type deal),  unwanted touching,  sexual assault, drugs, drug overdose (mostly comes around during veterans day here in the united states) food can be an issue at times (but I will just not engage in conversations during that time. It really is the bigger questions of "did you eat today?" and things that put me on the spot that make me have anxiety as either way I can't win? so don't ask me that one PLEASE even if you mean well.). 

I’m mostly looking into writing on discord  (We would exchange discords) but I do have a tumblr or two for indie rping we could write on as well.

We don’t have to ship.  I love family bond type things as well  (I mean,  I play mothers of some of the main characters? So yeah.  We can have angsty mother/child threads.  Hope bringing Hayley back to life,  etc).

I love tupper bots,  like a set up that is kind of by verse, etc.  I have a guide on how I normally set mine up on my blog.

I have struggled with comprehension issues / spelling from a young age.  I’ve made great strides in my writing and have gotten so much better. ALWAYS LEARNING! EVERY DAY.

We all make mistakes when we write.  We all have times that a simple word can suddenly get mispelled, etc.  I won’t judge you so don’t judge me on this front.

If you want to tell me EVERY SO OFTEN about an error or something please do it gently. Don’t get aggressive with me over it or anything.

● ok but someone give me that cute bartender storyline though? like this guy tends bar at a restaurant or a pub or something and always sees this cute girl hanging out there, but she’s always either with friends or with some guy so he never really gets the time to talk to her BUT ONE DAY she walks into the place alone and orders so many drinks until she’s so bloody drunk, screaming about how her boyfriend cheated on her, that the bartender had to bring her home himself. she wakes up with a horrible hangover, stumbles out the room to find the bartender cooking breakfast and rolling his eyes, laughing. “first of all, you’re an idiot. second, we didn’t have sex if that’s what you’re wondering. third, breakfast will be ready soon. sit.” and fluff commences HELP PLZ ( x )

● i’ll take that platonic ship where muse a and muse b come from different worlds and hang out a lot bc both of them fit comfort in the other. muse b���s pretty much comfortable with spillin’ their guts on a silver platter while muse a just quietly sits back and listens-- offerin’ advice in the process bc it’s the nonjudgmental breakfast club. however, one day, out of the blue, muse a has declined all of muse b’s calls, sendin’ them to voicemail. in a panic, muse b rushes over to muse a’s apartment (w/ food in hand bc they know how much of a foodie muse a is). “you weren’t answerin’ my calls, so i just wanted to see if you were ohkay.” and muse a’s eyes are hella puffy w/ makeup smeared all over and all she can do is smile. pLS stop ME !

● i just wanna play this plot again (dear lordty) i need this f/m plot in my life one more time. muse a was brought up in a religious house hold. all her life, she’s had to abide by her strict parents rules, and the regulations of the bible. bein’ that she grew up in a very judgmental and secure environment, she never had a social life because everything that didn’t involve god was considered worldly, which her parents (mainly her mother) never approved of. seven days a week, 2-4 hours a night, church was her life. after high school she did the whole college thing; attendin’ a religious based alta mater to please her parents. yet, she wasn’t satisfied with her life as it was. one day, she had an epiphany, to live her life for herself instead of livin’ it for others. eger to want to complete that change, muse a moves to a smol lil town in hopes of resettin’ the last year of her life. to make endsmeat, she gets a job as a waitress at the towns local cafe. muse b is a campaign manager (or does something in politics) and always orders food from the cafe where muse a works. whenever muse a delivers muse b’s order, they have an interestingly awkward conversation (seein’ as how they’re two people who’d never in a million years interact with each other) until they meet again. everything is peachy keen until muse a jokingly agrees to volunteer in this event muse b’s office is organizing. a few hours into the event (think of like nature or somethin’ involvin’ outdoor/physical activities) something happens to muse b that causes muse a to kiss muse b out of an abrupt fear for their life. and bam ! everything’s awko taco now because it’s like ‘we kissed. but you still annoy the shit out of me with your cocky, egotistic attitude yet at the same time i love how easily it is to talk to you and how you can make me laugh” and someone pls come and take my computer away from me ! ( x )

● pls hit me with a macgyver-esq plot. i’ve been hella obsessed with my mans lucas till lately that i need a plot that doesn’t just occur in my head. muse a is a secret agent workin’ at a foundation that’s cover is a think tank. muse b is muse a’s significant other (possibly workin’ at said job as a secretary or somefing). due to the capacity of muse a’s job, muse b rarely sees them since they’re always gone for days at a time. just gimme me the ‘i just miss havin’ you around.’ ‘i love you so much’. gimme me da fluff !

Welcome to the year 3035. We are more than excited to have you apart of our family here. Please make sure you read the plot and rules if needed. In the course of this orientation, a rundown of the rules, policies and how the city works will be presented. We expect everyone to abide by each and every rule so there isn’t any confusion or chaos. Do not be afraid to get creative, and we’re excited to see what you guys have in store.

EXPECTATIONS OF THE ROLEPLAY:

We don’t expect much but here’s what we expect. Activity and respect. As admins we will be active on the page constantly and we expect the same from our roleplayers. And in order to gain respect you must be respectful yourself, so don't try and push our buttons consistently and expect us to not to get disrespectful.  There will be a survey posted from time to time where you can send in suggestions and feedback. Just please be respectful when you send it. We expect everyone to develop their character in a timely manner through interaction on the dash and paras. As admins we’ll be here to help you with development. The gossip page is solely for entertainment and please do not let whatever might be said about your character on their affect you.

SWERVING/CLIQUES — We know that you probably joined with your group of friends and we appreciate you for joining our roleplay. All that we ask is that you try to interact with everyone in the roleplay and not just your group of friends. We don’t want anyone feeling left out so try to respond to starters before making a starter of your own.

SHIPPING — If you mainly joined this role to try to ship or to find someone new to 1x1 with. I'm going to need you to get rid of that idea right now. Ships are fun, but ships do NOT help you build development or give you muse. Ships are allowed in this rpg, but if you start to hide in the cut with you bae you will get one warning before your unfollow is posted.

OUT OF CHARACTER — If there is interaction going on between characters on the dash, that doesn’t mean for you to make any OOC/IC comments or reaction on the dash. We don’t want to see that, please stay in-character at all times unless you’re in the middle of a conversation and have to get off the dash for OOC reason.

TASKS AND EVENTS — We don’t want to overwhelm anyone so tasks will be posted every two weeks.All tasks are optional unless stated. We do encourage that you do these tasks to help with character development but if you don’t want to you don’t have to. There will be about 2-3 events posted the most bi-weekly. the admins will try to have an event calendar posted each new week. All major events will be held on the weekends. All significant events will be planned for the weekend, however, we do expect you guys to come up with activities on your own as well. If you’d like to add something to the calendar at any time, just come to us with details of what it is that you plan on doing. Whether it’s a small kickback, a grand opening, or an organized event, just run it by us and we’ll most likely approve, we won’t always be around to tell you what to do and we don’t want to tell you what to do either.

DEVELOPMENT —

We guys want you all to development. There is no right or wrong way to development, we want everyone to develop their character how they see fit. If you write anything triggering, we ask that you please tag all triggers when posting. If you’re doing something major with our character (such as a major incident, pregnancy, etc.) we ask that you come and talk to us first. This is a no judgement rp. We want this rp to be fun and comfortable for everyone. We do not want anyone to be judged on how they write or how they roleplay. If you have any suggestions for the rp or need to talk about a problem, don’t hesitate to come to us. That’s what we’re here for. We don’t want anyone to feel like they can’t come to us.

DISTRICT 1215 REGULATIONS:

Everyone that lives in the city is expected to have a job, but if your character is unemployed you'll recieve an monthly check of 4,500 bitcons. No you can not save that money and let it build up because you will have bills.

You are expected to keep the city clean.

All drugs are illegal except Marijuana.

All Alcohol is taxed and consumtion is limited. Breathalyzer test are a requirment to be performed at bars. BAC levels can not be over 0.08%.

Human hunting is illegal for ALL lausenschlange.
