On November 7th 1974 Eric Linklater, the novelist and playwright, died in Aberdeen.
Although born in Wales, Linklater always considered himself as an Orcadian. Indeed like many on the island Eric can claim viking heritage and his family has documental proof that goes back to the 15th century an 18 generations.
There is a great wee story about his Great- Grandfather that I am sure you will appreciate, he worked on the whaling fleet from Stromness. When given leave he’d walk 10 miles home to Harray. It’s said there were many ale-houses by the road, and he never did the journey in less than 3 days!
Educated at Aberdeen University, Linklater spent many years on Orkney, the birthplace of his father, and even commanded the Orkney garrison during the Second World War.
Linklater was initially rejected by the army because of his poor eyesight, but joined up in 1917, his poor eyesight however meant he was not meant to see any action, he was sent to a Yeomanry regiment stationed in the north of England.
I read he lied about his age to join up, he would have been around 17 at the time, it’s partly true, and if you look at the pic of him in his uniform he does look very young.I did manage to dig up the truth about the lie though . While in England he heard that they were sending a small draft to the Black Watch in France, he made a few adjustments to his own medical record (improving his eyesight and adding a year to his age) and, using his own authority as Orderly Corporal, added his own name to the list of those sent abroad.
From 1919 to 1925 he studied at Aberdeen University, first in medicine and then in English. Between 1925 and 1927 he was an assistant editor of the Times of India, living in Bombay. After a year working at Aberdeen University in 1927-8, he spent two years as a Commonwealth Fellow in the USA, at Cornell and Berkeley.
Eric Linklater began publishing prolifically in 1929: altogether he wrote 23 novels, 3 volumes of short stories, 3 autobiographies, 10 plays, and 23 books of essays and non-fiction, as well as the books mentioned above in the first paragraph. Juan in America and Private Angelo are perhaps his best-known novels. He loved the Icelandic sagas, and wrote his own: The Men of Ness: the Saga of Thorlief Coalbiter’s Sons ; later, in 1955, he published a book about the sagas, called The Ultimate Viking.
On 1st June 1933 he Eric married Marjorie MacIntyre, and after a period in Italy they settled at Dounby in Orkney; they had four children.
Between 1939 and 1941 Linklater commanded the company of Royal Engineers on Orkney. In 1941 he was posted to the directorate of public relations in the War Office, and from 1944 to 1945 served in Italy, where he acquired the experiences necessary for writing Private Angelo, which was dedicated to the Eighth Army. It was a book about courage, but it did not celebrate war. Angelo’s remark “I hope you will not liberate us out of existence” might well have inspired William Tenn’s celebrated science fiction story “The Liberation of Earth” . In 1951 he published a history of that part of WW2, The Campaign in Italy, and, with the temporary rank of lieutenant-colonel he visited Korea.
In 1945 Eric Linklater was elected rector of Aberdeen University, and in 1947 the family moved to to Ross, and later to Aberdeenshire. From 1968 to 1973 he was deputy lieutenant of Ross and Cromarty.
Diana Gabaldon author of the Outlander books, told National Geographic: she researched for her series of books by reading a Linklater book. "I was reading a research book called The Prince in the Heather. She said. The account of Jamie Fraser surviving Culloden is partly based on a true story in the book where a Fraser of the Master of Lovat's regiment” took refuge in a farmhouse with 18 others and survived the slaughter.
Eric Linklater died in Aberdeen on this day 1974 and was buried in the Harray churchyard in Orkney. His widow, already an active political campaigner, moved back to Orkney, to serve as chairman of the Orkney Heritage Society. She helped to establish the St Magnus festival, and campaigned for the Scottish National Party.
Orkney makar George Mackay Brown wrote in the Orcadian, 14th November 1974,
“Orkney is a poorer place without him; even though for most of the year, he lived outside the islands. It is fitting that his dust should be brought back to lie in Orkney earth.”

stella.blackmon: Documented @harrystyles Love on Tour with the one and only @anthonypham ❤️ The braces, the kindness, the nervous shaky hands, the openness, how it is to feel everything deeply and generously. I hoped to capture what I treasure about this community, tour, and the vivid and hilarious whirlwind of growing up. Stadiums and arenas around the world filled with 100,000+ brilliant, sharply funny, empathic, welcoming friends. This youth is the future, and I am so, so hopeful. Thank you, H, for setting the standard for this kind of love. Thank you, Pham, Molly, Jeff, Tommy and Tom for the opportunity of a lifetime and giving me a chance. I will never forget what it’s like to hear 125,000 joyful sniffles during those final piano notes. Love on Tour forever.
Thank you, @thenamesneema, for making these ideas come to life better than I could dream of, and thank you to the best, most thoughtful team I could ever dream of. @brentassayag, @sydnyfuruichi, @joeramosfilms, it wouldn’t be possible without you.

I only have an 18 percent chance of getting into a PhD program, according to the actual funding website. And I lose my health insurance on my birthday this month so I need to get a job or unemployment benefits. I have a linguistics degree and a translation degree, which I expect to graduate from with a 1st.
I applied as an in-house translator, freelance translator, subtitler (my actual specialisation), localisation tester, localisation editor, localisation specialist, linguist, post-editor (which doesn't pay), project manager (something I'm bad at but is urgently needed). I applied to the EU and WIPO. I applied for junior/entry level and expert jobs.
I then branched out to research assistant, science communication, copywriting, copyediting, international guest relation and tourism, airport jobs (where I'm not allowed to work because I'm too fat according to their application website), language tutoring and publishing.
Now I'm applying to be a secretary, call center agent, receptionist, bookie, croupier, cashier, video editor, data typist, case worker for immigration, and person standing outside trying to get people to sign human rights petitions. A lot of jobs I applied for require standing for long periods of time or heavy lifting which I can't do because of my joints but I'd have to accept anyway.
I have lost count of how many jobs I applied for this year but it was 40 just in the last two days alone. I applied for jobs all over the country, then in the entire EU, then in other countries I think I could potentially get a visa for. Jobs I'm qualified for, overqualified for, underqualified for.
I landed exactly 1 interview this year and it was unsuccessful. From the other companies I either got rejections or never heard back from at all.

Jump Festa 2024 SAKAMOTO DAYS Special Stage
(Part 1) Here are some of the things that were discussed, & exchanges that the guests had, which i manage to understand from the panel. I did not include those that i couldn't quite catch. Apologise if i misheard anything cuz my listening for Japanese isn't top-notch 🙏
Introduction
Guests for SAKAMOTO DAYS JF2024 panel are Sōsuke Ishikawa (editor in charge of SakaDays; from here on shall be referred as Ishikawa-san) and Ryōta Suzuki (special guest appearance; from here on shall be referred as Suzuki-san)
Ishikawa-san did not cosplay as anyone this time (lol; previously he cosplayed as Tarō Sakamoto in JF2022, fyi). However, he wore Sakamoto's Store apron this year & said that it is no longer sold in Jump Shop but there is a newer version which fans can still purchase.
Ishikawa-san mentioned that now that the series has reached its 3rd year anniversary, the battle with Slur is heating up which makes it more exciting to witness its future development.
When Suzuki-san came on stage he made a joke about how there's an X mark (meaning Slur lol) at the spot designated for him. He jokingly commented that we would chance upon so many Slurs (X marks) in our everyday life so he's hyperalert of his surroundings lmao.
1st Segment - Suzuki-san's Favourite Manga Scenes
Suzuki-san chose chapter 16, "Department Store War": the limited edition Sugar-chan backpack sale scene. He expressed that he could really feel Sakamoto's love for his daughter, Hana-chan, in this chapter. And seeing how Sakamoto is now fighting as a Dad, & not as a hitman, really stood out here & it's amazing to see. He also praised the series' comedic scenes and remarked that those grannies in the chapter are way more scarier than any other assassins in the series.
Ishikawa-san added that as a backpack enthusiast, he felt that he need to get his hands on a Sugar-chan backpack too.
Suzuki-san's next favourite manga scene is chapter 28, "First Rate" (or "Top Notch" whichever yall prefer), specifically Seba versus Shin & Heisuke. Suzuki-san recounted his experience when reading this chapter, he wondered how Shin would fight an invisible person & moreover Shin couldnt read his mind when Seba wore the invisibility suit. But then Heisuke came to assist Shin, and Suzuki-san praised Heisuke for being a great guy who not only consoled Hana-chan when she cried (cuz she was left by herself in store) & told her that Piisuke would help find them. Ishikawa-san also agreed that Heisuke is a really good guy!
Suzuki-san explained that he had put lots of thoughts into choosing his favourite scenes as he took into account those people who have yet to read the series. He actually wanted to add a scene with "the strongest grandpa" Takamura! Suzuki-san confirmed it when Ishikawa-san guessed if it was the Tokyo Tower-slicing scene. Suzuki-san remarked that he was mindblown when that scene happened.
Ishikawa-san was asked to provide his thoughts on Suzuki-san's scene choices. He said that Sakamoto is always fighting a lot so seeing him take a breather and get to do a normal everyday life kind of stuff plus those hilarious (department store war) scenes was refreshing so he's glad Suzuki-san chose that chapter. As for chapter 28, the Seba versus Shin & Heisuke happened to be one of his favourites too. He enjoyed how Shin & Heisuke both try to adapt in the battle, with Shin not being able to mind-read, but the two never once gave up as they pushed on to defeat Seba, who has the invisibility ability.
2nd Segment - Special Q&A with Suzuki-sensei (done behind-the-scenes)
You may refer to the JF2024 Q&A questions which I have previously translated.
Q1. ALTERNATIVE CAREERS // Ishikawa-san thought that all the characters' alternative careers made sense. As for Suzuki-san, he was absolutely convinced that Sakamoto would have opened a ramen shop business & be the manager there. He added that Sakamoto's current shop could pass as a ramen shop as it already looked the part so he was really surprised with the home improvement/hardware store manager answer lol. He also commented that Nagumo is very handsome so him being an actor or model makes a lot of sense. As for Ishikawa-san, he also added that he can already picture Heisuke to still be in training even after he becomes a Chef lmaooo.
Q2. REST DAYS // Suzuki-san was just fanboying over Osaragi 😂 He said "Osaragi-san is the best and she's super cute!" and Ishikawa-san agreed. Ishikawa-san said she reminds him of a cat! Ishikawa-san further stated that, according to Suzuki-sensei, Nagumo is the kind who can switch between On & Off modes easily. Sensei also said that he would sometimes just sit on his bed on his day off, with his hair all messy, and just do Sudoku puzzles. Ishikawa-san confessed that he never expected such information though it's interesting, and then Suzuki-san chimed in & said that everyone generally likes guys with gaps (aka gap moe. Meaning: contrast between one’s appearance and personality, or the difference between someone’s actual personality and from first impression you had of them). Suzuki-san also added that Nagumo is pretty sly.
Q3. COOKING ABILITIES // Suzuki-san never would have guessed that Osaragi can cook! He even joked that Osaragi would cut her food/ingredients using her buzzsaw & then they joked that she'd even cut through the kitchen counter lmaooo. As for Ishikawa-san, he felt that Osaragi is good at cooking home-cooked meals. Then moving on to Yotsumura (the goat), Ishikawa-san stated that he actually asked Suzuki-sensei what Yotsumura's specialty was & Sensei stated that Yotsumura can cook just about anything -from Italian, French to Japanese cuisines you name it, anything at all! Lastly, Ishikawa-san remarked that since Mafuyu is a clean freak or a germophobe, he probably would not touch anything, much less cooking. Suzuki-san seconded this & went on to say that Mafuyu would never cook at all.
Q4. AOI & SAKAMOTO FIRST MEETING // Suzuki-san commented that Sakamoto being all shy, hesitant & fidgety is super cute & adorable. Ishikawa-san thought Aoi has great communication skills as Aoi strikes him as the type who would instantly speak what's on her mind so she must have been really worried for Sakamoto at that time (seeing him w blood).
Q5. SUZUKI-SENSEI'S MESSAGE TO SHIN & SAKAMOTO // Suzuki-san remarked that while Shin doesn't look like the series MC -cuz he imagined the MC to be someone really strong- he felt that Shin & the rest of the characters around him have made an impact & things have been exciting thanks to them too. Ishikawa-san pointed out that Shin is more of a "growth" type character. Comparing him to Sakamoto, who could just defeat anyone single-handedly and easily, Ishikawa-san explained that Shin doesn't have all that but no matter the obstacles & difficulties thrown his way, he constantly tried his best & never gave up, and that's what makes one want to root for him. Suzuki-san also expressed his opinion on how he feels like Sakamoto is the “I got your back” type of person, to which Ishikawa-san agreed, saying that whenever Shin is in a pinch, Sakamoto would always come to his rescue.

NEVERMORE FANDUB
Hello everyone! I'm planning to make a fandub of the entirety of Nevermore, though I can't do this alone. As of now, the first episode/ chapter will be from episodes 1-7 since dubbing each episode individually would be a tad inconvenient. Now you may be wondering, how can I participate? Well, all spots are open till August 1st, and here's what I need:
• Voice actors (speaks for itself I believe.)
• An Editor Assistant: The editing assistant's job would be getting their hands on all the panels in high quality and to seperate the text from the speech bubbles. The rest of the editing will be done by yours truly!
• A tweener: I'm not planning on tweening everything, but I'd like to have some tweening in important scenes, adding some of that extra spice in there! Unfortunately I can't tween very well so that's why I need help to accomplish it.
Lastly, keep in mind that this project is long term. So be prepared to dedicate yourself to multiple episodes. Additionally, I unfortunately can't offer any payment so this project will be unpaid. You can find the casting call here, hope to see you there!

October 2024 TBR--
Tumblr media
We are getting so into spooky season this year with some spooky reads. I'm super excited about a couple of these books, but, also, the last book that I've had on my physical TBR since before January 1st of this year will be read this month. Everything else on my physical TBR is something I've purchased this year which is amazing to me. Let's get to the spooky reads.
Graveyard Shift by M.L. Rio (New Release)-- This might be the book I'm most excited to read. We follow five people who cross paths as they work the late shift: a bartender, a rideshare driver, a hotel receptionist, the steward of the derelict church that looms over them, and the editor-in-chief of the college paper. One night they discover a hole in the churchyard that wasn't there before. Who dug this fresh, open grave? And for whom? These five people try to get the answer to this mystery.
The Enforcer by Avery Keelan (Kindle)-- My next hockey romance! This one follows Lakeside U hockey superstar Nash Richards and the girl whose heart he broke. She's forced to work with him all semester long and has to work not to fall for his charms a second time.
Dreadful by Caitlin Rozakis-- From GoodReads: "It's bad enough waking up in a half-destroyed evil wizard's workshop with no eyebrows, no memories, and no idea how long you have before the Dread Lord Whomever shows up to murder you horribly and then turn your skull into a goblet or something. It's a lot worse when you realize that Dread Lord Whomever is...you." When I was standing in the middle of a bookstore reading this synopsis, I had so much hope that this would give me Assistant to the Villain Vibes. Let's hope it does.
Midnight at the Houdini by Delilah S. Dawson-- Anna, a diligent stage manager, has grown up in glitzy Las Vegas with her older sister Emily, but when Emily reveals a startling betrayal, Anna flees in the middle of a raging storm. She takes shelter in a boutique establishment she's never seen before: The Houdini. She discovers a magic hotel and a magical boy. When the clock strikes midnight, Anna will be trapped in the Houdini forever unless she can make an impossible escape.
The Dare by Natasha Preston-- Senior pranks are just beginning for Marley and her friends who egg houses, set chickens free on the quad, and fill the principal's office with glitter-filled balloons. But Marley's friend Jesse accepts a dare to drive a ten-mile stretch of winding road that's notorious for car wrecks called danger alley with no headlights. Now four friends are bound by a tragic accident and a dark secret that threatens their bright futures.
Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins-- The final book of my Hunger Games reread. In this one, Katniss has become the heart of the rebellion, but being a hero is hard when you also have PTSD. Things between the President and the Mockingjay come to a head in this finale.
Nightmares! by Jason Segel and Kirsten Miller-- Charlie Laird has several problems: his dad married a woman he's sure is a witch, he had to move into a purple mansion, and he can't remember the last time sleeping wasn't a nightmarish prospect. Nightmares can ruin a good night's sleep, but them slipping out of your dreams and into the waking world is worse.
Certain Dark Things by Silvia Moreno-Garcia-- Domingo, a lonely garbage-collecting street kid, is just trying to survive in the heavily policed streets of Mexico City when a jaded vampire on the run swoops into his life. Atl, is smart, beautiful, and dangerous. Domingo is mesmerized. Atl needs to quickly escape the city, but her plan doesn't include Domingo. Little by little, Atl finds herself warming up to the scrappy young man and his undeniable charm.
I'm so excited about so many of my reads for the month of October. My Christmas love will get put on hold while we dive into all things creepy and scary.

Hey there! We’re very excited to announce that sign ups for the Four Seasons of KakaIru Gift Exchange is now OPEN, from 1st June - 30th June!
As a reminder, this will work like an ordinary exchange, where you sign up, get given a person to create for, and then share your gifts around in the posting period!
The theme is Four Seasons; so you may create for your favourite season, a couple of seasons, or even all of them! The possibilities are endless!
Please read the details before signing up below!
Rules & guidelines:
All content must be created for this event – old/ recycled work will not be allowed.
This is a KakaIru event, so all works must be endgame KakaIru.
You must respect your giftee’s preferences. Eg. If they do not want triggering, sensitive, or NSFW content, you cannot create it.
Triggering, sensitive & NSFW content must be tagged appropriately.
The minimum word count for fics is 2k words.
The minimum requirement for art is clean lines & coloured/greyscale.
All work in foreign languages needs to be translated into English so your giftee can read it (mod @kakairu-shrine is an editor, and can assist you), but you are more than welcome to post the original version during the posting period, too.
Do not reveal who your giftee is, nor let them know who you are until the posting period.
Do not post your creation before the posting period.
You need to do the main prompt, but you don’t need to include all of the tropes that your giftee likes.
You should aim to have your creation done by the posting period, but we can offer an extension if necessary. Please communicate this with us so we know that you haven’t abandoned the event!
Timeframe:
Sign Ups: 1st June - 30th June
Giftee details given: 1st July
Creation Period: 1st July – 31st August
Posting Period: 1st – 7th September
Where to post:
Add your work on the forum! Most work will be able to go in our Fanworks category, but please take a look at our posting guidelines to see if it will need to go to the Lemon Bar, instead.
We have an AO3 collection you can post to; and we would like you to use the tag Four Seasons of KakaIru Gift Exchange.
Tag us here with the prompt your work is for. Please consider using the tags four seasons of kakairu gift exchange, and kakairu.rocks
On Twitter, tag @kkirrocksevents and use #fourseasonsofkakairugiftexchange or #fourseasonsofkakairu
All tagged work will be shared by us, and a masterpost will be created at the end of the event!
If you are interested in signing up, please FILL OUT THIS FORM; and if you have any questions about the Four Seasons of KakaIru Gift Exchange, please let us know!
