Drew Brees unlikely to rush for 1,000 yards like Tom Brady

It’s the most pointless stat in Drew Brees’ storied career, but damnit aren’t all Brady/Brees comparisons somewhat interesting?

This past Sunday, perennial pocket passer, Tom Brady, achieved his 1,000th rushing yard. It took him 265 games since the year 2000 to do it. Unlike Randall Cunningham, Steve Young, or Michael Vick, who rushed for more than 13,000 yards combined, Brady has done most of his damage strictly from the pocket.

Drew Brees has played with a very similar style throughout his concurrent career. Since entering the league one year later in 2001, Brees has rushed for 762 yards in 261 games. Though neither passer will be remembered for his legs, it appears that Brady holds a slight advantage when it comes to rushing statistics.

While Brees averaged 1.6 yards per carry and 2.9 yards per game, Brady averaged 1.7 yards per carry and 3.8 yards per game. Brees’ three most prolific rushing seasons were for 84, 85, and 86 yards (2011), with only one of them coming in a Saints uniform. Brady’s three most prolific rushing seasons were for 110, 102, and 109 yards (2011). Neither have come close to repeating their rushing totals from 2011.

Brees has scored 116 1st downs in 465 career rushing attempts, which is good for around a 25% 1st down conversion rate. Brady has scored 198 1st downs in 579 career rushing attempts, which is good for around a 30% 1st down conversion rate.

Brees has fumbled 21 times (or once every 22 attempts) to Brady’s 28 (once every 21 attempts), so we’re splitting hairs here as it comes down to volume of attempts. It’s clear both future first ballot Hall of Famers have relied on their arms more than their legs, though they are both still dominant despite their “one-dimensional” styles of play.

Since Brees needs 238 more rushing yards to hit 1000, we can assume, at his current rate, that he won’t hit that mark for roughly another 82 games. That’s five seasons, and even though Brees has said he would like to play until age 45, it’s more unlikely than likely to happen.

It’s a good thing career rushing stats are probably the last thing Brees cares about as he pursues several more important tasks at hand. Among them, position his team for the playoffs, win his first MVP, and win his second Super Bowl.

It’s perhaps more likely than we think.

Dirk Nowitzki never said he was retiring but he’s getting a farewell tour anyway

Nowitzki hinted he may actually want to play one more season. That might be awkward, since everyone’s showing him the door.

Adam Silver thought it was obvious. Forty-year-old Dirk Nowitzki is playing his 21st NBA season for the Dallas Mavericks, and he has looked like someone who’s spent two decades playing this rigorous sport. It’s the reason why the NBA commissioner made both Nowitzki and Dwyane Wade special roster additions to the 2019 NBA All-Star Game.

Wade has already announced that he’d retire after the season, and Silver figured Nowitzki would join him.

“I saw him painfully running up and down the court,” Silver said of Nowitzki during All-Star Weekend, “and I think it was clear that this was going to be his last season.”

That has been the case everywhere Nowitzki has gone. The surefire first-ballot Hall of Famers has received tons of tributes and standing ovation in road arenas this season. It’s as if everyone is writing the end to his story without his input.

Before the 2015-16 season, Nowitzki said he wanted no part of a farewell tour of any kind, that announcing his retirement a year prior was “the worst thing that he could think about.” Now, in the middle of the going-away party he never asked for, Nowitzki is leaving the door open for one more year.

“I’d love to be there for the young guys one more year, but I think it depends on how the body feels,” he said, via ESPN’s Tim McMahon. “I’ve had some issues, obviously, this year. ... But like I said, I am feeling better. I am feeling a little stronger.

“I think I’m going to make that decision later on, but I think the future’s bright.”

A funny thing happened when Dirk Nowitzki drilled a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter that cut Utah’s lead to just three points — he heard cheers.

In fact, the Dallas veteran heard those for much of the night.

They came when he was introduced in the Maverick’s starting lineup. He heard them when he made back-to-back buckets in the first and, really, every other time he made a shot in his 6-of-14 performance.

But what if this actually isn’t the end of Nowitzki’s NBA career

Nowitzki is playing more minutes now than he was earlier in the season.

He’s played more than 20 minutes in each of his past three games. Prior to that, he hadn’t played more than 18 minutes all season. Nowitzki said he wasn’t physically able to play a heavier load, but he says he’s in better shape now than he was before.

“I feel like I have a little more pep in my step,” he said, via ESPN. “My legs and my wind are a lot better than [earlier in the season]. I just feel better overall. I feel like I can actually contribute, whereas earlier I was struggling just to get up and down.”

This NBA season is coming to a close on April 12, but Dallas’ legend just might have a little more left in the tank, if anything, to mentor Kristaps Porzingis and Luka Doncic as they take the reins of the franchise moving forward.

And if Nowitzki does stay one more year, well, that’s kinda awkward.
