Bring the maritime and ecological history of Tacoma, Washington to life for visitors and school groups. Dive in and share past and present maritime traditions of Tacoma’s historic waterfront.

“Experience the Past, Explore the Present, Expand the Future”

The goal of programs at the Foss Waterway Seaport is to educate and connect culturally diverse and economically disadvantaged local communities with the rich maritime history that has shaped the environmental and economic realities of Tacoma today.  

This AmeriCorps stipend-supported member will be actively engaged in learning and teaching about local marine ecosystems, the historical context that created today's waterfront, and the connection between them.  The member will provide points of interest for museum visitors of all ages as they experience full sensory interaction with the present and the past of Tacoma's waterfront.  Visitors will see, hear, touch and smell how the industrial past has shaped the environmental present and how understanding both, past and present, will shape the future.  The member will have the opportunity to generate and deliver educational curricula for exhibits that will personally connect visitors to the multi-cultural development of modern day Tacoma and let them see their place in the creation of the city's future.

This position is contingent on funding.

Engage learners of all ages in hands-on, active learning about marine and environmental science, history and fun. Dive into past and present maritime traditions of Tacoma’s historic waterfront.

The goal of programs at the Foss Waterway Seaport is to educate and connect culturally diverse and economically disadvantaged local communities with the rich maritime history that has shaped the environmental and economic realities of Tacoma today.  

This AmeriCorps stipend-supported member will be actively engaged in marine-focused educational activities and programs in the Seaport’s museum, Exploration Area and science vessel with visiting groups.  They will also be an environmental ambassador for the Seaport, going out into surrounding communities as a Seaport representative for outreach activities and events.  The member will connect community groups, families, K-12 classes and Seaport visitors with the rich ecosystem of Puget Sound and the historically important players that shaped modern day Tacoma.  They will help develop in visitors, students and community members an awareness of Tacoma’s ecological history and actively engage participants in relevant community environmental issues to impart knowledge and empowerment to create a sustainable future. This position is contingent on funding.
