My 1st Randomly Generated Marine Chapter
This was my first attempt at creating a Space Marine Chapter randomly.
So I decide to randomly create and generate a Space Marine chapter by using and messing around with 1d6chan(rip 1d4chan)'s Space Marine Chapter Creation Table and Roll A Die to get the results. Why? Because I thought it would be fun. Note; I did for fun, and there is going to be a lot of interpretation and speculation on my part, but I guess that's the part of the fun.
So here are the results of this me messing around;
______________________________________________________________
Chapter Origins: Why Was The Chapter Founded? (d10) 10: Crusade - "We need people running around and hitting the Imperium's enemies. Found a Chapter!"
When Was The Chapter Founded? (d100) 97: M41/M42; Ultima Founding consisting of Primaris Marines. Actually in two waves (+ intermittents in-between), first in 999.M41 and 000.M42, intermittent foundings during the intervening years to replace destroyed chapters or garrison key areas, and the second in 012.M42 after the first phase of the Indomitus Crusade ended with victory at the Battle of Raukos from the last core of Unnumbered Sons veterans, capping off the largest founding in history.
Who was the Chapter's Progenitor? (d100) 71: Dark Angels
Chapter Properties and Flaws: Gene-seed purity (d10) 10: Flawed - Chapter's gene-seed is flawed and sets them apart from their progenitor - roll on Chapter Flaws table
Chapter Demeanour (d10) 10*: Uphold the Honour of the Emperor - Performing unheroic acts? *BLAM* NO or alternatively, since I'd already rolled 10 once for above, I decide to roll again and I got... 1: Swift As The Wind - Going slowly and thinking things out? BLAM NO
Based on the Chapter's Progenitor, how likely are they to suffer gene-seed mutation? (d100/d20) Dark Angels - 10% (1-2) d100; 44/d20; 12
If they have a new mutation, what is it? (d10) 7: Lost zygote - Something's gone. One of the silly EMPRAH-BLESSED things like the Betcher's Gland or Melanchromic Organ, not something critical like the Black Carapace
Progenitor-specific mutation Dark Angels Lost zygote
Lost Zygotes (d100) 60: Oolitic Kidney Since I got really confused and didn't know really about interpreted them above as I didn't know if it there only need to be one lost zygotes or two, I decide to roll again 100: Roll twice on this Chart 68: Neuroglottis 59: Oolitic Kidney* I'd already rolled for Oolitic Kidney, so either the above is good enough or I reroll again 27: Occulobe
If one exists, what is the Chapter's Flaw? (d10) 4: Pride in the Colours - The Chapter hates doing anything that covers their livery, including wearing Deathwatch black.
Chapter Legends: Figure of Legend (d100) 96: Battle-Brother (roll d10 twice to determine company and squad). I decided to roll both 2d10 once and roll 1d10 twice 6 & 7: 7th squad of 6th Company or alternatively, 5: 5th Company 4: 4th squad
Deeds of Legend (d100) 69: The figure led an action against an Eldar craftworld, boarding it and inflicting grievous casualties before withdrawing. He and his Chapter are especially hated by the pernicious Eldar, for whom the event is still fresh and raw.
Chapter Homeworld and its Properties Chapter homeworld (d100) 35: Feral World
Fleets 10+d10 vessels: 8
Homeworld terrain (d100) 29: Desert
Rule of homeworld (d10) 3: Stewardship - "Hi, Planetary Governor? It's me, the Chapter Master. Just calling you to remind you that I outrank you, even if I don't do anything."
Not Fleet-Based, so I can ignored that
Tactical and Strategic Organization d10 Result - Chapter organisation and Variant Base Chapter 10: Unique organisation/Unique(Codex)
Combat doctrine (d10) 6: Drop Pod
Characteristic Chapter Training (d100 Result) 44: Endure Anything: Training in this chapter emphasizes the need for any squad to be ready to endure any trials they find themselves in. They produce tough, durable brothers with diverse specialties.
Chapter Specialities Specialty restrictions (units the chapter cannot field) - Only roll if Unique Organisation was selected (d100) 15: Apothecary (someone still needs to collect the progenoids)
Special equipment- Roll once if Divergent was selected, twice if Unique Organisation was selected (d100) Rolling 2d100 81: Preferred Fighting Style: The Chapter has a specific way in which it prefers to go about killing the enemy in the name of the God-Emperor of Mankind. Examples: Bolt Pistol and Chainsword, dual Power Swords, special Bolter pattern or ammunition 99: Modified Weaponry: When the Chapter’s forges produce a weapon, they produce them in a style that is specific to their Chapter. Examples: Power Sabre, Bolt Pistol with weighted butt for clubbing. or alternatively, Rolling 1d100 twice 58: Blessed Wargear: It is common for members of this Chapter to have their Wargear blessed by a Chaplain before battle. Doing so puts the Battle-Brother’s mind at ease and more focused on the task at hand. 81: Preferred Fighting Style: The Chapter has a specific way in which it prefers to go about killing the enemy in the name of the God-Emperor of Mankind. Examples: Bolt Pistol and Chainsword, dual Power Swords, special Bolter pattern or ammunition
Chapter Beliefs What form do the Chapters' beliefs take? (d100) 84: Totem Creature - "You know how we've got an animal as our Chapter symbol? Yeah, we're going to stick that everywhere."
Chapter Strength At what strength is the Chapter? (d10) 2: Under Strength: The Chapter is recovering from a defeat or accident that occurred several decades ago, or has recently suffered heavy, but not irrecoverable losses. It is probably at a minimum of half strength, and should return to nominal strength within a decade.
Chapter Relations Who are your Chapter friendly with? (d100) 24: Another Chapter (choose one) Hhhmmmm… Maybe either the White Scars or the Space Wolves, depending on how your interpreted it.
Who are the Chapter's enemies?(d100) 27: The Tau Empire (alternatively, you may select a particular Sept, Commander, or Ethereal)
Ooooooo, the Tau Empire, my favorite faction in 40k (mostly due to the battle suit, so sue me :P), but I think I'll go with selecting a particular Sept, Commander, or Ethereal option. But i'll most probably do that in one of the reblog of this post.

A 2nd Randomly Generated Space Marine Chapter Attempt
I played around the Space Marine Chapter Creation Tables again, but this time I used Dice Roller. And... well, it has its pros and cons.
Chapter Origins Why Was The Chapter Founded? (d10) 4: Strategic Prognostication - "Our tarot cards say there's going to be a threat here, maybe. Found a Chapter!"
When Was The Chapter Founded? (d100) 24: 34th Millennium; 8th Founding (sometime mid-millennium) and 9th Founding (between M34 and M35)
Who was the Chapter's Progenitor? (d100) 6: Ultramarine* Nope. Too vanilla for me. Rerolling again. 65: Blood Angel Ooooohhh, the Blood Angels Or alternatively, testing something out by rolling 2d100… 1: Ultramarine* 79:Traitor Legion or unknown
Chapter Properties and Flaws Gene-seed purity (d10) 3: Pure - Same as progenitor in terms of purity, and will maintain close links with it
Chapter Demeanour (d10) 10: Uphold the Honour of the Emperor - Performing unheroic acts? BLAM NO
I can/could ignore the rest
If one exists, what is the Chapter's Flaw? (d10) 1: We Stand Alone - The Chapter is either distrusted for some reason, or shuns contact with others.
Chapter Legends Figure of Legend (d100) 34: Chapter Master
Deeds of Legend (d100) 36:The individual was a stalwart enemy of the servants of Chaos, and slew a Daemon Prince.
Chapter Homeworld and its Properties Chapter homeworld (d100) 6:Hive World
Fleets 10+d10 vessels:6
Homeworld terrain (d100) 5:Jungle/Forest/Swamp
Rule of homeworld (d10) 7: Distant rule - "You see that castle up there? It's inhabited by the mighty sky-warriors of Emp-rar. Sometimes they come and steal our children."
Not fleet-based so I could ignored
Tactical and Strategic Organization Chapter organisation (d10) 10: Unique organisation/Unique(Codex)
Combat doctrine (d10) 4: Stealth
Characteristic Chapter Training (d100) 56: Duty Unto Death: Astartes of this chapter will readily take on missions others see as suicidal, and soldier through any pain they encounter on the way.
Chapter Specialities Specialty restrictions (units the chapter cannot field) - Only roll if Unique Organisation was selected (d100) 89: Librarian (can't, won't or unorthodoxly use Psykers) Probably has something to do with their Progenitor if they're loyalist descendants of one of the Traitor Legion
Special equipment- Roll once if Divergent was selected, twice if Unique Organisation was selected (d100) 33: Bestial Companion: More common among those Chapters whose origins come from Feral Worlds, this Chapter prides itself on raising hunting animals to assist in battle. Examples: Fenrisian Wolf, hunting birds. I think a Chiropteraen-looking creature will do. Maybe a creature that look like a cross between a wolf and a bat
Chapter Beliefs What form do the Chapters' beliefs take? (d100) 13: Revere the Primarch - "Our Spiritual Liege is better than yours!" (can reroll if lineage is unknown)
Chapter Strength At what strength is the Chapter? (d10) 3*: Under Strength: The Chapter is recovering from a defeat or accident that occurred several decades ago, or has recently suffered heavy, but not irrecoverable losses. It is probably at a minimum of half strength, and should return to nominal strength within a decade. *Already rolled that one before. Rerolling. 1: Endangered: The Chapter numbers only a handful of Companies or less having suffered devastating losses in combat, accident, or dramatic genetic instability. If recovery is even possible it will take many decades, making every Battle-Brother (and his Progenoids) an invaluable resource. *Mmmmm… Maybe? Alternatively, i'll reroll again. 9: Normal: The Chapter can field ten full companies, each with ten squads. In all likelihood most every squad consist of ten brethren and some specialized appointments may be empty, but the Chapter is regarded as fully fit for battle.
Chapter Relations Who are your Chapter friendly with? (d100) 15:Adeptus Arbites
Make sense
Who are the Chapter's enemies?(d100) 65: Chaos Space Marines (you should choose a particular warband, Chapter, or Traitor Legion) If I had to guess… probably the Black Legion or something else, probably due to daddy issue or something else

Actually, what I would call a pretty amusing MSTKesqe review of FATAL up on 1d6chan. Granted, the thing that actually makes it funny is the argument-by-argument response to said review from FATAL's designers.
This is my favorite quote:
Sartin(the reviewer): So, basically, FATAL is the date rape RPG. Byron Hall(FATAL's co-designer): Another faulty conclusion drawn by Darren. Where is dating included?
Question: Is FATAL (yeah that one) bad in an interesting way? I've heard a lot about it and how infamously terrible it is - but it it terrible in a way where reading it can be interesting or is it just plain old bad in regular, totally bog standard ways.
Short answer: no.
Long answer: system-wise, it's a classic case of a couple of chucklefucks thinking they've got some bright ideas, but ending up repeatedly re-inventing the wheel because their experience with the medium is extraordinarily narrow – and that's before you get to the fact that the text's editing, technical writing, and grasp of elementary statistics are uniformly atrocious, to the extent that it's almost entirely unplayable as written. As for the "humour", it's the sort of sophomoric horseshit you'd expect from an author who never outgrew their "saying slurs is inherently funny" phase; you can't Mystery Science Theatre this shit funny, though some reviews have made a valiant effort.
(Which isn't to say that it's entirely lacking in value, mind. It's definitely a text of historical interest if you're doing a deep dive into a very particular era of tabletop gaming culture. However, it's such an unpleasant read that I wouldn't recommend it for any other purpose.)

Two things about your primarch daughter posts just to not spam you.
I know you said he tries and all that. But it's so hard not to feel enraged at Dorn. There's being emotionally inept and then there's not trying. He reads like someone who dosen't TRY. He would have seen something. The kind of parent who never tells his child he loves them or he's proud of them? not sure what parental books he would find that didn't mention that and even then he would have to twist the words so hard to mean "actually I should just feed and clothe her, she'll know". I mean a parent child relationship where the CHILD "gives more than she recieves"? I want to slap him. It's the same feeling I get reading those reader or oc inserts where he's emotionally unavailble to his partner and I don't know if you've seen it since it mostly floats around 4chan spaces and 1d4/1d6chan. But that copypasta where someone talks about how others find Dorn boring but to them he's like that quiet family man at work who dosen't engage in watercooler talk and kinda opens up to his sons and I'm just wondering "wtf is his relationship with the mother" since she's never mentioned. Only with someone emotionally neglecting a child instead of a partner it is much worse. With partners I'm just thinking "leave his ass".
Thankfully I don't think he's THAT bad in canon and the fandom has flandarized him a bit. This is the same man who called Sigismund his "most beloved son" and lined the insides of his armor with fur to never forget the humanity of his grandfather or something along those lines.
On the other hand there's this bit in Echoes of Eternity before Sanguinius dies:
Dorn didn’t know what to say, when nothing seemed worth saying. He was not made for exchanges like these. Many thought him cold in these moments, even heartless, but he was neither. It was purely that defeat was alien to him, as was the quality of emotion shining in Sanguinius’ gaze. What was worth saying when no words were necessary? What did one say to a brother you barely knew, who had nevertheless fought beside you from the beginning to the end? Sanguinius had the answer without even needing to consider the question. ‘Farewell, Rogal.’ The Angel rose to his feet, and the holo tracked upward with him. ‘If we do not meet again in the flesh, know that it was an honour, being your brother.’ The Praetorian nodded to the Angel, wanting the right words, searching for them, and not finding them. The silence stretched out. It dragged. Sanguinius smiled, knowing. The hololith blinked away.
(For the people who like primarch x primarch I thinks there's great potential in Dorn having unrequited feelings for Sanguinius but that's a tangent). Yeah the man is emotionally constipated but he does TRY and in the time as well as the responsibility that comes with parenthood I think, can nearly garentee he would have expressed himself (side note but how the hell did he even get laid if he was this cold?)
Konrad. I know you most likely just didn't consider this (god that sounded unintentionally dickish, not like that, just that you mentioned not having considered the mother before) but I am a little gremlin for "LORE". What about handing the kid of to the mom instead of Vulkan unless mommy met some tragic end? In my oc verse (I'm not bringing that up to enforce lore, I'm saying this because these ideas are free for anyone who wants to build of of them) I intentionally made it so that Konrads waifu came from a family that was both large and tightnit (and relatively wealthy) so that even if Konrad went AWOL or just needed help there WAS that support network of uncles/aunts and grandparents to help. Even if the emotional support network on the fathers side was…. litterally noone. Or perhaps Konrad decided their must be primarch/astartes level protection, which would be smart, and didn't trust himself so "Primarch, but not me" was (to him) the best solution? That would be interesting as hell as a concept.
Primarchs + Daughters (2)
Finally finished the damn part two. Been kinda busy here and there with my new job but lo and behold, the one yall asked for. Soon enough, yall find out why it took me a while writing this one for the two main guys I had to add here.
Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3
Tumblr media
Konrad Curze
A’right, I’ll open this one with the fact we all know that this man shouldn’t even be legally allowed to have children. I’m gonna be real for a hot second and admit that I stared at the screen for HOURS not knowing what to write because any poor little girl that is born from this guy will have the dubious privilege of being the most sheltered and hidden secret the Primarch ever kept close. With all those visions of death and inevitable doom mixed with the sudden power rush that fatherhood gave him, it left in its wake a perfect storm for this lunatic to develop a paranoid and obsessive need (NEED) to keep his daughter safe; something hard to achieve when he already knows the essence of his Legion. His fatalistic nature regarding his own future would suddenly clash violently with the Primarch’s new found protective stance concerning his child. It's almost sad to consider that this poor man GENUINELY wished to avoid becoming the monster his visions showed, but knowing that he’ll be balancing in the thin line of one day hurting his precious girl (or worse than that) it'll put him in the hard decision of having to let go of her eventually. He is no Perturabo, for that matter. In the rare and far away moments of lucidity, I can see Konrad choosing to protect the innocence and life of his child by trusting in the last person ANYONE might expect the Night Hunter would seek help: Vulkan. Honestly this is just plain sad, man.
Sanguinius
This is it! The golden boy, yall! We all know the kind of person Sanguinius is, but add a precious little daughter in the equation and all you get is the perfect example of textbook girl dad. No matter how busy this man is, somehow he’ll squish some playtime with his baby and enjoy every bit of it. Seriously, this guy acting like a dedicated father is worth being in a stockphoto image. His baby girl asks him to play tea party? Some astartes will find their Primarch hunched over, awkwardly holding a comically small cup between his thumb and index while his precious princess pretends to pour more tea for herself. The daughter of Sanguinius doesn't go a single day without knowing that her papa loves her a lot and when the man isn’t around, the Blood Angels Legion are close to keep her company to the point that even she calls them ‘big brothers’. No one is safe when she wants to play dress-up. The single problem I see with Sanguinius when raising his little girl is that he sins of being completely oblivious to the more mortal side of his daughter’s needs. He easily gets so wrapped up in his role of The Perfect Angel that he doesn’t realize his tiny princess has boundaries that are being constantly crossed, but since she feels the need to prove that she can be like her father, endures all those problems and refuses to seek help about anything. It becomes a kind of toxic mix considering how much Sanguinius is loved and adored by others, to the point that his daughter becomes like a coveted gem too by relation, making her need to prove her own ‘perfection’ an unconscious action the older she grows. I’m not even gonna touch with a ten feet pole the “fun fact” called the Red Thirst on this one because, let's be fair, that would require for me to write more than 3 pages with ONLY Sanguinius and his daughter in the spotlight and that’s only assuming his baby girl didn’t inherit it. I specialized in visual arts and marketing, not psychology jfc.
Ferrus Manus
It took me a while but after some investigating and more reading I can safely put this man in between the Papa-tier and ‘tough love’ guys. His practical mentality and belief of the strongest are (oddly enough) healthily separated from his parenting skills. This is one of the few Primarch that can see their daughter as an individual of their own and makes sure to be as present as possible in her life but the loyalty of this man to the Emperor is his own flaw. Not in the case that he’ll choose the Imperium before his little girl, but because it’ll put him in the dreading and guilty notion that he’ll always prioritize his daughter despite his oath to serve for the Great Crusade. Most of his brothers (except maybe Jaghatai and Konrad) just assume or don’t even think about the long term future of their daughters or simply presume that they will become a great part of the Imperium’s well oiled structure. Not exactly their fault since they never grew up with anything resembling normal. On the brighter and wholesome side (whiplash change!), this is a man who finds handmade gifts more meaningful and always makes sure to explain the reason behind them mostly out of the enjoyment of watching his little princess look so amazed at her papa’s skills. More often than not, Ferrus’ belief of the strongest would falter a little as he perceives the true fragile nature of his daughter and, even if she share the resilient blood of a Primarch, that isn’t enough to convince him that she isn’t vulnerable but instead of letting the worry fester, he’ll try to teach the girl the art of fighting. That’s where the ‘tough love’ kind of guy I mentioned comes out to light. He will not spare kind words during those moments of teaching, as he wishes for his princess to prevail any difficulty but he’ll make sure to always end any sort of training with “I love you so much that the idea of one day not being there to protect you, pains me beyond any form” to make sure that his harsh actions have a reason behind. Honestly, it's the kind of father-daughter relationship that possesses so many shades that makes its own drama novel. Good thing that uncle Fulgrim is always there to smooth the hard edges that may come in the future and makes up for the lack of spoiling the little girl deserves. Ferrus is not amused by it. Forgot to mention that the Primarch will be even more motivated to take off the metal of his hands, for he has yet to truly feel the warm and soft flesh of his baby’s hand. It's the one feeling he keeps missing and craves so much.
Angron
Oh man, another of the hard ones. Okay, if I managed with Konrad, I can tackle this bitch too. You need to comprehend that we are talking about a guy that has been so intimate with the meaning of pain that it's amazing he’ll be capable of ranging through other emotions that don’t involve fury into that combo too. That being said, this whole shitshow of being the father of a young girl can only be described as sad AND tragic. First off, Angron’s daughter wouldn’t even be allowed to leave her chambers at The Conqueror for obvious safety reasons and having her stay on Terra can’t be an option too, as Angron would rather be death than leave in a silver plate this one single pittance of good he helped to create under the light of the Emperor. That being said, any little girl born from Angron would be terribly isolated and one can’t even blame the Primarch for that as he, despite his disposition, finds his daughter as a genuine reflection of what he could never ever dream to have or be. That sometimes results in him feeling short and spontaneous moments of anger from the impotence of not being able to be close to his daughter, let alone console her with anything resembling compassion. This is a man that is horribly aware that he’s away from one sharp stab of the Nails to his brain to end up killing his little girl in one single swat of his hand. The moments of anything resembling fatherly love are few and very tense, for Angron has to constantly be focused on not letting the pain control his actions and that always looks as if he’s dismissing his child’s love language or actions. What else can I say that most people don’t know already? This is just a sad story waiting to end in tragedy and had it not been for how Sanguinius ended during the heresy, I can see The Great Angel taking Angron’s daughter under his care as the only consolation and promise to his corrupted brother before his demise. After becoming a Daemon Prince, Angron’s only genuine and foggy memory of his little girl is her crying while calling him with heavy despair. Goddamn I almost tear up with this one.
Roboute Guilliman
Look at my big nerd! One of the few guys that actually is humble enough to feel more human than any of his brothers… sometimes. I gotta say it, Roboute has the vibe of what happens when someone incredibly autistic suddenly becomes a parent; expect lots of books to try and be prepared for what entails to take care of a mortal baby. He’ll have a wholeass strict routine of activities and diets that you AND the baby must follow to ensure both of your health along with “fun facts” regarding a toddler’s development that half of the time lack the keyword ‘fun’ in there. Honestly, Euten will be a BLESSING sent, for she’ll be the one railing back the most extreme attempts of her adoptive son to try and raise his little princess like she was just another task of paperwork. Over all his quirks, the Primarch of the Ultramarines is absolutely trying his hardest to be a good father just as the one that raised him, but this is a man that half of the time ends up clumsily trying to spend time with his little girl only for it to backfire as he simply doesn’t understand how to entertain his daughter. Good thing the child will simply be happy to spend time with her papa despite his weird personality. More often than not, some of the astartes will see the young lady at her father’s chambers in a little booster chair beside him, doodling on some papers to pretend that she’s a big girl helping her papa with his very important job. It's probably the most adorable sight anyone can ever get the chance to see. Just like most of his brothers, Roboute isn’t that good at expressing his love towards his daughter with words, so he simply let his little princess be on his lap and hug her as if it will be the last time.
Mortarion
I’ve written enough of this man being a father that you all can get a wild idea of how he will be when confronted with parenthood. Even if he believes himself to be undeserving of anything resembling happiness thanks to his perception of being nothing but a tool of the Emperor, this guy will only need to see his precious little flower and feel like everything in the world can be forgotten, including his ever festering negative emotions. His daughter is the single light of love that he selfilish believes is his right after such torturous upbringing although that mentality rarely affects his princess, as he simply shows nothing but care and tenderness towards her. He may be a nervous trainwreck, fully aware that his Legion and himself aren’t exactly safe-hazardous, but that never has stopped him from doing his utmost best to protect the little girl from anything that may hurt her. Like most of his traitorous brothers, Mortarion would not hesitate to bring entire worlds into devastation if it meant that his family can be safe, even if that’ll end up making a terrible gap to grow between him and those he loves. It's quite terrible and sad to know that, unlike Fulgrim or Angron, Mortarion was the closest to his daughter and showered her with as much genuine love as he could in an attempt to avoid being anything like his supposed father (adopted or creator equally), so when he turned into a Daemon Prince, the festering and rotting resentment that consumes him sometimes simmers down when he remembers the laugh of joy his little princess often released when he would carry her up in his arms. Oh yes, some good ol’ gut-wrenching emotional damage, teehee.

Exalted. Read the 1d6chan article on it, for a broad, lighthearted overview that doesn't get too bogged down in specifics.
Anybody got any good recommendations for ttrpgs if I'm primarily looking for extended loredumps about a setting with little to no intention of trying to run a game? I being realistic about my social prospects, and worldbuilding

The article for the taunar supremacy armor reads a lot like this:
Tumblr media
Source: 1d6chan
I wonder if for the T'au their human allies function in the same way as humans do to the Vulkans in Star Trek. The pattern is like this: a ship purely crewed by Vulkans is going to be a very boring and rational affair. They'll do their job as efficiently as they can and follow protocol as this is what logic dictates.
A ship crewed by only humans also gets the job done, even when they might get into some weird hiccups along the way. Nothing too special, but perhaps a bit too comfortable taking risks (or using your ship as a battering ram once again, LOOKING AT YOU JANEWAY!).
But the moment you throw a slightly unhinged Vulcan into a crew of humans, you are about to unleash disaster, as their competence meets with a horde of very enthusiastic enablers for absolutely every bad decision they would've never even considered when alone.
For the T'au, it's probably even worse as the individual castes are already pretty insane. Earth Caste engineers already have a tendency to go overboard the moment the Ethereals look away for a second. Add to that humans who culturally have just shook off the dogmata of Mars and who are VERY excited about the possibilities of new tech, and you get a rather... spicy combination.

Opinion 7: Nobody has managed to convince me of a legitimate reason for the Matt Ward Hate.
Okay, an explanation for my non-40k friends who are still bearing with me.
Matt Ward was the aforementioned writer who turned up at Games Workshop, was given all the previously established lore, and told to write some stuff.
And a load of players absolutely hated his work. Like, flame war sending him death threats level hate. Hate that became a meme hate.
And I just don't get what he did. Or rather, I think I do, and it all boils down to people having a very short sighted view of hobby history.
Here's an extract from 1d6chan, edited for brevity:
"… [Ward's] most rage-inducing codex … is the Space Marines codex, which explicitly states that all chapters, excluding a few "aberrants", behave and think in exactly the same manner as his army—the Ultramarines. [Ward] just assumes that everyone else automatically accepts this radical shift in logic from thinking of the blue boys as "all-rounder guys with a Roman motif" to "TEH BEST CHAPTAHR EVAR""
This seems to be people's big bugbear. That Ward made the Ultramarines the focus chapter of the game and, in the lore/fluff writings, made them some kind of super elite super soldier super men.
But this is where that short sighted view of history comes in.
Because, back in 2nd edition, that is exactly what the lore was! Ultramarines were the basic Space Marines that could be copied to create your own chapter. There were 3 other 'official' aberrant chapters, with the lore providing space for more aberrants to be added later.
But I can see how people had lost sight of this, and it isn't Ward's fault.
You see, back in 2nd ed, between the rules for Ultramarines, Space Wolves, Dark Angels and Blood Angels, you could create any shape of Space Marine army you wanted. Army list building was very flexible. You want a chapter of marines that specialise in siege warfare with loads of heavy weapons and artillery? Yep, use the Ultramarine list, build your own chapter, good to go. You want a chapter full of bikers? Yep, use the Ultramarine list, build your own chapter, good to go. Want to spice up these lists with some special rules? Just use the other chapters painted up in your own colours; use the Space Wolves special squad that could take loads of heavy weapons for your siege army, the Dark Angels' special bike rules for your biker army, etc.
But 3rd edition was much more rigid in its army building rules. The designers really wanted you to take two units of basic Space Marine foot troops with each army, minimum. They had looked at the previous lopsided army choices and thought these were overshadowing the basic Space Marine as the best thing ever.
I think the part of that 1d6chan quote that speaks volumes is the description of Ultramarines as "all-rounder guys with a Roman motif". Because Ultramarines were not mere 'all rounders'. They were Space Marines! As mentioned in the posts above, a single squad of Space Marines should be able to take and hold a planet! This is what the 3rd ed designers were going for.
But as I also mentioned in the posts above, it is a mathematical impossibility for the basic Space Marine to be anything more than the most average soldier.
So, when the 3rd edition was released, for all that the game designers tried to emphasise the power of the Space Marine, they still became the basic troops that everyone else compared their forces to. So, everyone tried to make their armies a little lopsided to set their Space Marines apart from the others.
Theoretically, this should have been impossible; the rules were too rigid for such army imbalance.
But the games designers forgot about the new kids on the block. You see, White Dwarf, the company's monthly magazine, had a load of new staff with their own Space Marine armies. And there was nothing to stop them writing and publishing rules for these armies. For example, the editor had a Space Marine chapter that was all mounted on bikes, the White Scar Space Marines. So, these got special rules that allowed you to forsake the basic squads and take all bikes. Similar things happened for every flavour of Space Marine army.
Rules wise, the different chapters became the way of getting different armies. You didn't have a biker marine army; you had a White Scar army, etc.
Lore wise, all of these armies were the result of the flexible Ultramarine system. The in-world, canon reason that Space Marine armies are as they are (baring a few aberrants).
So, there was this friction between lore and gameplay.
And when Matt Ward started writing, he wrote based on the lore rather than the gameplay.
And so the gamers(TM) kicked up a shit storm.
The bit that gets me about Matt Ward's 1d6chan page is another quote: "This could easily be written off as the bitter anger of the old veterans, and on some level, it is."
And it gets me because this anger wasn't coming from the veterans. It was coming from a load of kids who thought they were the old guard. But older people could remember when the gameplay matched the lore, and knew that Ward was just writing to the universe as it had been established. Even older players could remember the 1st edition, where the Ultramarines weren't even one of the original 20 legions that had the civil war! Because lore changes all the time. And you are much better off just ignoring it and writing your own.
And that will take me to my next Opinion…
(To be fair to the games, they also criticise the quality of Ward's prose and rule design. These may be more valid critiques, but they are hardly surprising given Games Workshop was becoming increasingly corporate and deadlines increasingly tighter. If you want high quality prose, you don't go to the writing churned out on a monthly basis with the intention of selling toys to children at growing numbers each month. In conclusion, Matt Ward isn't the enemy, capitalism is.)
Hi, I am an obnoxious player of Warhammer 40k 2nd edition.
I have no qualifications in game design or anything, yet I have Opinions about the franchise. Unfortunately, for my own sense of enrichment, I don't want to ramble on if nobody cares.
So, I invite anyone and everyone to ask me questions or simply ask for a completely random Opinion.

This predates Tumblr. Mocking Rowrowrowyourboat Gentlydownthestreamman’s name goes back to the aughts at least. There’s a whole section devoted to his names on his 1d6chan page, and that list is ancient.
Tumblr media
I was looking at this shit twenty years ago, no joke.
Tumblr media
There are many ways to get it wrong but some are cleary more wrong than others.

So here are the results of this me messing around;

I got lazy because I was in a rush to get this finished :P
My 1st Randomly Generated Marine Chapter
This was my first attempt at creating a Space Marine Chapter randomly.
So I decide to randomly create and generate a Space Marine chapter by using and messing around with 1d6chan(rip 1d4chan)'s Space Marine Chapter Creation Table and Roll A Die to get the results. Why? Because I thought it would be fun. Note; I did for fun, and there is going to be a lot of interpretation and speculation on my part, but I guess that's the part of the fun.
So here are the results of this me messing around;

I decide to rolled up a planet for act as the homeworld for my homebrew chapter and for extra fluff for them too after getting inspired & the idea from reading one of the threads about Clavessa Secundus using the Planet Generator and the idea was far too tempting to me to ignored it since I got too many potential ideas for it along with me being something of a freaking sucker for lore & fluff and giving a bit of a barebone lore & fluffing for me to work on later using the Planet Generator and Roll a Die again for this.
Okay, so to recap; we know it's a Desert-based Feral World (or a Feral World with a Desert terrain, however you word it), through I don't if I should make a normal Feral World or a Death Feral World. I'll just have to see.
*WARNING: THIS OR RATHER THESE (after forcing to decide to split them up into several different reblogs because the original was too fucking long for one post to handle) POST(S) CONTAIN MAYNT BLOBS OF WORD AND COMPLICATED SETS/AMOUNTS OF MATHS INVOLVED SINCE I OVERTHOUGHT ON SOME OF THEM I THINK. SERIOUSLY. I'M PRETTY SURE THAT I HAVE GONE LOWEND UNHINGED AFTER FINISHING THIS.
Planet Name: Dune *placeholder name*
Class: Feral (Automatic). While it's Automatic, I decide to roll just to see what I get and I got 72… which is Pleasure/Paradise/Garden World. Huh. I did not expect that one. …Oh well. I mean, there are some planets in 40k that can/may have more than one classification and no say that they are exclusive from each other. So yeah, a Feral Death Pleasure/Paradise/Garden Desert Adeptus Astartes Chapter World. Which is really hilarious to me due to how much it doesn't make sense and how oxymoronical it is at first glance if you're not imaginative and/or creative enough.
Tech Level:
a. Tech Value; a1. Feral: 1d10 = 7 a2. Feral Death: 1d10+4d10 = 7 or (if i decide to reroll again) 2 + [7 + 4 + 2 + 2 =] 15 = 21 or 17. Or alternatively, if I decide to roll 1d10+1d10 four times to get: 7 or 6 + 7 + 5 + 10 + 7 = 36 or 34 a3. Feral Death Pleasure/Paradise/Garden: 1d10+4d10+35+2d10 = 7 or 3 + [3 + 2 + 3 + 9 =] 17 + 35 + [9 + 4 =] 13 = 72 to 69 (heheheh, it's Slaanesh. I get it)
b. Tech Level(s): b1. 7; Bronze/Iron Age: The people have started to learn how to shape and work bronze, and later iron to make more effective tools and weapons. They are also living in more substantial and sturdy buildings. Hunting and gathering is still common, though small farms may be seen dotted about.
b2. 21; Industrial: Has completely moved on from small farms and independent manufactories. Everything is mechanized and automated. The population mostly lives in large cities, and computers are starting to become common in all things. Solid projectile weapons are the norm for military forces, and advanced armour has started to appear for personnel and vehicles. At the very end of this stage, nuclear power and advanced computing systems can be found. Or 17; Pre-Industrial: The underclass lives mostly by farming, and there is a richer class starting to make use of new technologies and mechanical devices to aid in manufacturing. Printing presses make education and distribution of information more efficient.
Or the other options: 36; Warp Space: Has seen the development of warp drives and Geller fields, and the inhabitants are capable of traveling the galaxy beyond their own system. Powerful computers are common. Cybernetics and advanced medical techniques have been developed that border on Imperial level augmentation and rejuvenants. Primitive models of more advanced weapons, like plasma and needle weapons, are rare but present. Or 34; Advanced Space: Has explored their own system, and colonised any viable planets to be found there. Las weapons are common, and cybernetics are starting to become practical.
b3. 72 to 69 (Uh-oh, look like Slaanesh is involved in one way or another); Advanced: Have access to limited or developing technology. In the Imperium of Man only the greatest hive worlds and forge worlds have this level of technology. Although it wouldn't be surprising if some Inquisitors, who at least can be trusted to not fuck up all the time by both their fellows and the Mechanicus, have a planet or two that run an actual research facility that legitimately researches new technology. Extremely advanced weapons and armour are available in this planet and its manufactora can produce some of the most demanding (and commensurately deadly) weapons available to mankind. Such weapons can include graviton/grav weapons, conversion beam weapons, photon-thruster weapons and ordnance special even for being Titan or Voidship grade. At its peak, the deadly Vortex weapons that tear open holes in reality can even be produced, but such materials need to be handled with extreme care. Further, who knows what manner of technological horrors a planet so blessed to have survived the Iron War, the Age of Strife, the Great Crusade, the Horus Heresy and the Long War so unusually intact, or at least was able to rebuild may contain?
Depending on how I see and interpreted it, there could be different human forms & populations of different tech levels.
So here are the results of this me messing around;

I decide to randomly rolled a D9 to see what possibly Traitor Legion Loyalist the chapter would descend from if I ever don't choose Luna Wolves/Sons of Horus.
D9: 2
Iron Warriors

I decide to randomly generated a marine for fun, using Space Marine Battle Brother Creation Tables coupled with Roll a Die
And here's the results
Chapter (d100) Automantic: Custom (Dark Angels Successor) Through, I decide to have a bit of fun to see what happened if I did roll 64: Raven Guard Hmmm… Raven Guard, interesting. Probably would be a marine from Raven Guard or one of their sucessor chapter, like the Raptors or Necropolis Hawks, that is attached to their chapter, whether temparory or permanently.
Faith in the Emperor (d100) 26: Absolute Belief: Unwavering faith in the Emperor as humanity's saviour, considering every action in His name righteous. The average belief of a loyal battle brother.
Age (d100) Automantic: Young: (Less than 100 years old) Alternatively, if I did roll it 46: Middle-aged: (100-200 years old) Depending on you see it, such as which time period and if he was with the chapter at its founding, he could anywhere from Less than 100 to 200 at most
Rank Rank (d100) 29: Battle Brother: A fully initiated Space Marine, the backbone of the Chapter, and the warriors who execute its missions and battles.
Alternatively, if I choose a more specialised ranks…
Specialised Ranks (d8) 3: Chaplain: A spiritual leader who provides guidance, morale, and religious fervour to the Chapter's warriors.
Preferred Combat Style Preferred Combat Style (d100) 5: Assault and Close Quarters Combat: Specialised in close combat engagements, excelling in melee combat and rapid assaults.
Preferred Weaponry From it said, I have to use and make my own best judgement on it, based on the Preferred Combat Style above. If it doesn't fit, reroll or choose one that does. But where the fun in that? It would be fun to mix it and spice it up a bit. Primary Weapon(d100) 56: Assault Bolter: Outfitted with a large box magazine and high-speed autoloader. Although short-ranged, its rate of fire and damage are considerable, with the recoil contained by a mag-shield.
Secondary Weapon (d100) 92: Custom: (Roll again, choose, or create a Secondary Weapon.) Hmm… Custom. I could Roll again, choose, or create a Secondary Weapon. Bbbuuuuuuttt… it doesn't state that I could do both. ;) Rerolling 6: Bolt Pistol: A standard sidearm for many Space Marines. (Gain Automatically) Choose: Absolvor Bolt Pistol: (Gained Automatically if "Chaplain" or "Apothecary" was rolled on the Rank Table) Custom: Combi-Weapons: These are pistols with additional features, such as a bolter and a secondary weapon like a flamer or melta. I choose a Multilaser/Las-Volley with a underslung Heavy Bolter
Melee Weapon (d100) 48: Lightning Claw: A pair of clawed gauntlets that enhance a Space Marine's close combat capabilities.
Specialist Weapon (d100) 46: Multi-Melta: An even more potent version of the Melta Gun.
Equipment Customisation (d100) 42: Custom: Personalized modifications tailored to the Space Marine's preferences and combat style
Notable Personal Battles (d100) 48: Heretical Cult Leader Elimination: Infiltrated a cult and thwarted a daemonic ritual by eliminating their leader.
Alliances (d100) 37: Brother Astartes from the same Chapter (Bound by Battle): A fellow Battle Brother of his Chapter, bound by unbreakable bonds of brotherhood and camaraderie, sharing a history of battles and triumphs. Probably either the Chapter Master, a (or one of the two or both) heroic figure(s) of the chapter, or another random marine
Enemies (d100) 70: Eldar Corsair: An enigmatic and agile Eldar pirate and privateer, renowned for their cunning and hit-and-run tactics. Unsuprising
Battle Cry the creation table recommand to make your own, but i'm too lazy Battle Cry (d100) 93: "For Holy Terra!"
Battle Honours (d100) 54: Purity Seal: A sacred emblem representing a Marine's adherence to purity and duty.
Quirks (d100) 20: Tactical: Values strategy above all in combat.
Extra Fluff Injuries (d100) 38: Psychic Headaches: Suffers from occasional psychic headaches due to warp exposure.
So, a marine with the potential of being a Chaplin who prefer close quarter combat who has an hate boner toward a specific eldar
My 1st Randomly Generated Marine Chapter
This was my first attempt at creating a Space Marine Chapter randomly.

Size of Star: 1: Tiny. …Is it a red dwarf or a white dwarf? I mean, it would be a niffy way to explained why it's a Feral Desert or a Feral Death Desert World Okay, let me reroll again. I got 5. Already got tiny, so rerolling again. 100: Giant. Okay, so either it's a red giant or the option above. Hmm… Maybe it's a Binary Star System. Axial Tilt: 32; Moderate (16-25°) = 16.963 degrees ± 20°C/68°F Length of Day: 87; 8d10 hours and since I rolled on Average, No Size Mod = 8d10 = 6 + 3 + 2 + 8 + 1 + 10 + 10 + 2 = 42 or 1d80 = 24 = 24 to 42 hours
Length of Day: 87; 8d10 hours and since I rolled on Average, No Size Mod = 8d10 = 6 + 3 + 2 + 8 + 1 + 10 + 10 + 2 = 42 or 1d80 = 24 = 24 to 42 hours
Length of Year: 12; (10d10)x2 Terran days = 4 + 7 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 5 + 8 + 5 + 5 + 10 = 57 X 2 = 114 Terran days to complete one full rotation of its local star. A note from the 1d6chan's planet generator table* *"The length of a planet’s year is given as the number of Terran days it takes to complete one full rotation of its local star. Divide the rolled number by 365 to see how many Terran years this is. To determine how many local days make up a local year, simply multiply the number of days in the year by 24, then divide that number by the length of the planet’s day." *I honestly got confused on this part and had made needlessly more complicated before I recalulated and reedited it. a. 114 Terran days % 365 = 0.31 Terran year or 365 % 114 Terran days = 3.2 Terran years b. 114 Terran days X 24 = 2736 % 24 to 42 local hours = 114 to 65.14 or 66 local days
Satellites: 74; 1d10 and I've mentioned above, No Size Mod = 7
Gravity: 11; Light (0.5 to 0.7 G): Lightfooted. +2 Agility bonus for movement, +4 to Strength and Toughness levels for Encumbrance, +2 Strength for Throwing. Jumping and leaping distances get doubled, fall damage gets halved. The gravity here is light. Not what I was expecting. Hmmm. Maybe i'll reroll again, just to see if I could a stronger gravity like standard or higher 69; Standard (0.8 to 1.2 G): Normal or easily adaptable. No modifiers. Hmmmm, interesting. Probably will use this for fluff depending on how I interpreted. Probably thanks due to gravitonic & terraformic engines since they (at least for the latter) canonically exists. This give me some related ideas.
Atmosphere: 72; Bearable: A Bearable atmosphere can be breathed normally for a short time, but carries a slight abnormality, will create an unfavourable taste in the mouth, and will prove fatal if breathed for too long. Any character subject to such an environment without a respirator or rebreather can breath normally for a number of hours equal to their Toughness bonus, and must then return to a normal atmosphere (natural or artificial). Being subject to a bearable atmosphere for any longer will give the character one fatigue level per hour. Once the character falls unconscious due to fatigue they will die one hour later if not provided with proper air to breathe. Due to how close the roll was to normal, it would probably mean that it's a bearable learning toward normal atmosphere.
Hydrosphere: 9: Waterless: This world is completely deprived of water. Bring your own bottles. (Not surprising in the least)
Temperature: 55; Average (-10°C to +30°C/14°F to 86°F): Humans are comfortable in normal clothing and need only the most basic of shelters to survive. Honestly just walk outside, chances are it'll be within this range. To probably Warm (+31°C to +50°C/88°F to 122°F): Depending on moisture, this world may either be a baked desert, a steamy jungle, or even a storm-wracked archipelago. Architecture will require plenty of cross-breeze. Tolerable until it hits the high forties but it'll still be dangerous if out of the shade too long. If unprotected, you'll last a number of minutes equal to your toughness bonus, after which you gain +1 fatigue until unconscious. Death follows in one minute. With the ± 20°C/68°F from the axial tilt above, it can become Tepid (+51°C to +100°C/124°F to 202°F): A world on the edge. Any hotter, and any water will just boil away. If outside and unprotected, you'll last a number of rounds equal to your toughness bonus, after which you gain +1 fatigue until unconscious. Death follows in one round. Unsurprising, considering what we've seen on this list.
Terrain: a. Number of Terrains 100 = 22; 2 b. Terrain Types 2d100 = 55 + 41 = 96; Either Broken Rocks, Active Volcanoes, and/or Cliffs or 1d100 twice = 94 and 71; Islands and Swamps Huh, curious. Islands and Swamps for the latter option. Either it's not completely waterless. Or something else. If there is active volcanoism like terrain types in the former, then the "Islands" and "Swamps" is probably filled with flowing molten lava or some other flowing liquid and/or nonliquid that isn't water. Make sense so far. Explained the reason why the atmosphere is bearable, due to the ashes methink.
Climate: Basically Arrakis/Dune for all intents & purposes, probably with more active volcanos. I mean seriously, with everything I have rolled above, it's a hot desert world where everything from the temparature to the atmosphere to the freaking sun is trying to fucking kill you. It's accurate all things considered.
Native Flora and Fauna: Mainly based on mostly dinosaurs from the Cretaceous Period Mongolia with Gobi Desert and/or Mongolian Plateau by extension. Along with mostly but not all mammals from Late Eocene or Early Oligocene to Pilocene Epoch Central Asia, East Asia, South Asia, West Asia and/or the Middle East, and North East Africa; The Sandworm from Dune unsurprising by this point; Probably some dinosaurs here and there from Jurassic to Cretaceous Period North Africa; Probably some to most of the modern day desert animals located from the Arab World sloping up to the deserts in the north and west parts of East Asia; The Elephants
So here are the results of this me messing around;

Hilarious enough, depending on your interpreted this, I think I basically made Space Wolves except being Dark Angels with having a Desert Feral Homeworld, which is a funny idea if you think about it.
I mean, the mere idea of a Dark Angel Successor Chapter trying to out-Space Wolves the Space Wolves would be pretty hilarious.
