an actual human interaction I had today at work, but make it julie and the phantoms:
Alex: Hi!
Willie: Hi..?
Alex: My sister dared me to go up to a stranger and tell them I’m gay.
Willie: Okay..
Alex: I’m gay.
Willie: Good for you.
Alex, beginning to leave: I am actually gay.
Willie: Good for you!
Alex: …bye!

Missing my point much?
Of course, showing genocide does not always mean glorifying war. But the way you depict things heavily affects the tone of the story.
The question I'm asking is Why.
Why is it's nessissary to show people getting burned alive in 1080hd when the animated series managed to bring home a better, more emotional impact simply showing the aftermath 100 years later?
I'm not against showing violence on TV, even gore. Hell I've been someone who enjoys pretty nasty violence in stories since I was way to young to be reading/watching said violence.
I am a Mortal Kombat enjoyer, and I do find appeal in violence for violence sake, in places where it makes sense.
I also love seeing violence used in way that brings such a visceral emotional impact that it makes you nauseous.
But in order to do that properly, I believe it's important to understand when Not to use onscreen violence.
When showing something in great detail is more detrimental to the message and story you're trying to tell, then allowing the audience to imagine for themselves the terrible events that took place.
I watched the Natla scene, and it's my opinion that it's more about showing off the cool cgi air bending and showing people being burned alive because they could and its a quick way to a cheap shock.
Maybe its "standard movie violence" but that's not a real reason to show it. There are plenty of other places in the show to have that "standard TV violence" would fit better where I think it could have a proper impact for the viewer.
Now that I've got a majority of that info dump out of my system, I'll let you in on a secret, I'm having fun. Shocking I know.
Nothings ruined, no one's mad, or enraged. The live action made a choice, and its a choice that I don't agree with for the reasons I outlined as well as others that are more complicated to put into words that I can't be bothered with.
I may never watch the Natla adaptation on Netflix cause I have no interest in encouraging the current trend of soulless cash grab remakes that fundamentally misunderstand what was good about the og.
I am Infact happy. Cause I have a reason to talk about ATLA, and a reason to rewatch and reanalyze the story again. Return to fandom spaces where people love this show as much as I do.
But contrary to what some people seem to believe alot of people, myself included, actually gain joy and happiness from analyzing and understanding the deeper and sometimes different interpretations of what we consume instead of just pouring it into one ear and letting it drip out the other.
So, while I might believe that some parts of Natla are an insult to the themes of the OG, and I die a bit inside every time I see a clip of characters I love dearly that have so obviously had every bit of characterizations and compelling personality stripped from them for the sake of "maturity" and "modernizing".
I also don't care if you like the remake. It's no sweat off my back if people enjoy what i dont, Good on you even. If you found something worthwhile in it, then maybe all that money they put into to it wasn't a total waste.
Something Something Avatar The Last Airbender was fundamentally about showing the horrible long-lasting effects of both war and violence in a grand sense (the way people suffer under fire nation occupation including the air nomad genocide and the state of the southern water tribe) but also a personal sense (zukos entire arch) and the show goes to great lengths to avoid glorifying war, often specifically choosing only depict the aftermath of terrible violence while not graphically depicting the violence itself.
And I think it's a profound misunderstanding, maybe even an insult to the source text to continually depict gratuitous death and violence as a focal point of the live action.

Being 16 and taking classes at the local community college was a crazy experience like "yes the trio of friends I'm a part of from Japanese class are 13, 16 (me), and 19 and we would literally all die for each other. We don't have friends outside of the trio. We're cute little losers and we get boba & go to the mall sometimes and sing in the car and make fun of the 20 year old who used to be a part of our friend group but he broke up w the 19yearold and transferred away so he's out. None of us would have met in any other circumstance other than Japanese class but we love each other so much and nobody can stop us." people who think nobody should be friends w peeps younger/older than them are missing out on joy and whimsy tbh
