"The Genius of Advertising Could No Further Go"

Fair warning: yapping ahead. Things I explore: the National Police Gazette, the illustration, and a teeny history of 19th-century women brothel owners... and also an apology because I didn't mean to write all of this.

THE NATIONAL POLICE GAZETTE

"THE Genius of Advertising Could No Further Go—An Enterprising Proprietress of a Bagnio Places a Photo-Lithograph in Her Window Setting Forth The Charms of the Inmates; New York City" (full caption) is from the National Police Gazette, a magazine founded in 1845 by Enoch E. Camp and George Wilkes that covered murders, outlaws, and sports—as any man-interested tabloid would (I'm not a man, but yippee-ki-yay, would I tune in). And, of course, the gazette would include scandalous (on the cusp of obscene and illegal (Victorian era, keep that in mind)) images of female sex workers and performers (think of it as the time's Playboy... silly enough, they also had Marilyn Monroe for their cover, this being 1956 instead of PB's 1953).

TRAGICALLY, the National Police Gazette would see its largest spike in popularity during the Great Depression before suspending publication from 1933-1935 due to selling ownership twice, being sold again in the late sixties, and then killing the magazine's production in 1977. A whole 132-year reign, including being the prime news for Boxing in the 20s (the editor and proprietor, Richard Fox, handed studded belts to champion fighters) and being barred by USPS, declares this magazine not only a historical relic but also a forgotten yet still-living America—one for the men (and, of course, us girls. After all, this was peak American).

BACK to the picture. The caption mentions the word 'bagnio,' which, upon scanning, accidentally read the N as an X, so I searched up the word to make sure I was reading it entirely correctly—I was. It's an archaic term for 'brothel' (a place where patrons visit prostitutes). The illustration depicts men staring at images of prostitutes that are pinned on the window by the owner (can't blame men for using women to make money as, in this situation, it's a female owner).

WOMEN & BROTHELS

SURPRISINGLY enough, women dominated Western America, building communities and providing for the economy. The fact I call it surprising is because I just learned this (Feminism should fight against history erasure because this should've been a widely talked about chapter in HS American History)! As much as I believe women shouldn't sell their bodies and that we need to better take care of women (forced prostitution—sex slavery—runs the prostitution industry), I can't deny the history women have with Bordellos, not as employees but also as owners. Madams are the title of these female brothel owners, and they were common back in the 19th century. Most of the time, Madams were entry-level (showgirls) who made almost as much as factory workers and worked their way up to the top or used their money to create inns and parlors, expanding their wealth. These women, though taking advantage of their own and other girls' (usually aged from their mid-teens to middle-aged) bodies, capitalized and found their place in labored society... something that can be considered early feminism. They planted themselves in the economy and made it known that they could own property, make money, and (yes, even in 1800s United States) vote. That, you can applaud.

The kings of 4th generation: ENHYPEN

✧ ִֶָ Enhypen ִֶָ ✧

Is a new kpop group that was formed through a survival show that started in july 20th called I-land, transmitted by Belift, a South Korean entertainment company. In this program 23 members participated, but only 7 of them won: Yang Jungwon (Jungwon), Lee Heeseung (Heeseung), Park Jongseong (Jay), Park Sunghoon (Sunghoon), Kim Sunoo (Sunoo), Nishimura Riki (Ni-ki), Shim Jaeyoon (Jake). The results were confirmed on september 18th and could have been different because 80% of votes were from the fans and only 20% of the judges. It should have never ended… because the members and fans were sad after because they had a lot of affection for each other after being together for such a long time.

The positions of the members in the group are: Jungwon is the leader he is a vocalist and dancer, Heeseung is the main vocalist and main dancer, Jay, Jake and Sunghoon are rappers, a vocalists and dancers, Sunoo is a vocalist and dancer and the last, the maknae (youngest member) is Niki, he is the main dancer and rapper.

The fandom is called ‘Engene’ of ‘engine’ in english. The meaning is ‘the engine that helps them grow and continue’. We all love it because we feel part of Enhypen, like a family.

BORDER: DAY ONE ˖ ָ࣪➹

Album debut

The debut album is the first one that the group released on november 30th. It's called ‘Border: Day one’. The album consists of six tracks, including the lead single ‘Given-Taken’ and the 3 others songs ‘Let in me’, ‘10 months’ and ‘Flicker’, not including the intro and outro which aren't songs. The principal song is Given-Taken and the concept is vampires, so in the MV (how we call the music video) they are a kind of experiment. The visuals are really crazy and amazing. It could have won the best MV of the year but sadly, it didn't happen because it didn't get enough views.

The album won a lot of awards in South Korea. Some of the most important are ‘Seoul Music Awards: Rocky of the year’, ‘Golden Disc Award: Artist of the year’ and ‘New artist of the year: physical sales-Border: Day One’ with the most pre-orders having surpassed 150,000 copies in just two days. We thought that couldn’t have been better, but it was, and after fifteen days pre-orders had surpassed 300,000 copies.

One of the best decisions I've made this year was stanning enhypen (how we say to follow a kpop group). Just one week after I became a fan I spent a lot of money on albums and merchandise. I must have been sure already of how much happiness they would bring me and I don't regret spending all that money. Their songs are so exciting that when I listen to them I start smiling. Another amazing thing about kpop in general is the choreography of the song, so when I look at how they dance... It is hypnotizing.

BORDER: CARNIVAL × ̟ ˖ ⁺

First Comeback

On March 31st it was announced that enhypen would have their first comeback after their successful debut and on April 26th the MV was released with their respective album called Border: Carnival, which featured four songs, Drunk-Dazed which is the title track, Fever, Not for sale and Mixed-up and also had their intro: the invitation and outro: the wormhole.

The concept of this album is about a terrifying carnival, the album brings three versions: hype, down and up, each of which represents parts of the process in which someone is invited to a carnival, enjoys it and then loses the sense of reality. The music video starts with a very curious vibe and then culminates with a very explosive chorus, they really make you feel like you are at a party with them.

This album is one of my favorites, the songs give me great joy and energy, the music video is really great, I am completely proud of everything they have achieved, they must’ve worked hard.

So far they have won three awards with the song Drunk-Dazed: on 'The Show', another on 'Show Champion' and the last one on the 'Music Bank' and on May 24th they debuted at number 18 on the bilboard 200.

The goal of the MV was to reach between 7 and 10M views in 24 hours, we would have been able to achieve this if all the fans participated in streaming the music video, but since not everyone participated we couldn't reach our goal.

On the 19th in South Korea, another MV was released with a song from the album ‘Fever’ and so far it has 11 million views, becoming one of the fastest 4th generation kpop groups to achieve this number in such a short span of time. Enhypen said that they couldn't have gotten this far without our support and as fans we will keep working hard until they win an award with this music video.

During the Joseon dynasty of Korea, there were professional historians called Sagwan (사관 史官) who seated themselves in a corner of the court all the time and recorded everything Kings did and said on a daily basis. 

Therefore, those historians were regarded as a stalker by the kings and understandably many kings hated the historians so much for invading their privacy. (LOL)

The historians’ first draft of records were called Sacho (사초 史草), and even kings were not allowed to read them in order to protect the Sacho’s political impartiality. The Sacho records were compiled as annals only after a king passed away. In such a way, the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty (조선왕조실록 朝鮮王朝實錄) comprise 1,893 volumes covering 25 kings from 1392 to 1910.

Goo Hae-Ryung 구해령 (played by Shin Se-Kyung 신세경) is a female historian being pointed at as a freak, because she tries to fight gender stereotypes as her work is often looked down on.

Yi Lim 이림 a.k.a. Grand prince Dowon 도원대군 (played by Cha Eun-Woo 차은우) is the second in line to the throne.   Even though he's never been out of the palace, and also has never been in a romantic relationship, he captivates the public with great ability of writing romance novels. His love with Gu Hae-ryung, the honest historian and legal stalker, makes him realize the heart-throbbing emotion as well as the true world outside the palace.

Crown Prince Yi Jin 이진 (played by Park Ki-Woong 박기웅) cares so much about his younger brother Yi Lim. He will be depicted as an ideal monarch of Joseon dynasty who fights against greedy nobles for the starving and sick people.  

In addition, Min Woo-Won 민우원 (played by Yi Ji-Hoon 이지훈) is Goo Hae-Ryung's senior who happens to be the son of this drama’s villain, the first vice-premier Min Ik-Pyung. 

Song Sa-Hee 송사희 (played by Park Ji-Hyun 박지현) is her colleague historian with firely ambition.

This drama is supposed to take place at the beginning of the 19th century, but I think it is entirely fictional because the royal names of the princes are not the same as the actual historical names. An alternate history, maybe?

According to news articles, it is the story of planting a valuable seed of social change, confronting the old belief about discrimination between men and women as well as between nobles and commoners. OK, It has a good intention in tune with the times of #Metoo and feminism, but the problem is... is it entertaining? 

Currently, many Sageuk drama with good and ambitious intention have flopped in TV ratings because of the lack of entertainment value. (I’m watching you, Haechi, Nokdu flower and Different dreams) I hope this drama is not only righteous but also funny and entertaining.

SUNN O))) are pleased to present Life Metal, their first new studio album in four years, due for release on Southern Lord in April 2019. The album will be supported by their first European tour since 2016, including their first ever French tour - dates and details below.

At the very beginning of 2018 SUNN O))) co-founders Stephen O'Malley & Greg Anderson set out on a path toward a new album production. They were both determined to create new music and a new method of working in the studio, without forgetting the long and proud history of production and studio accomplishments forged during their first two decades of existence (and the members' own musical experiences out of the band's). One long term goal was completely clear: to record Sunn O))) with Steve Albini in his Electrical Audio studio. Steve took the call, said "Sure, this will be fun. I have no idea what is going to happen."

Greg and Stephen gathered twice that spring for writing, conceptualising and riff woodshedding in the very building where the band was formed: Downtown Rehearsal in Los Angeles. Sonic cosmoses, flashes of abstract colour (synthetic and objective) and themes emerged from the mastered depths of saturation and circuits between the two players and their mountains of gear. Themes developed in terms of brightness and energy, while visionary cues pointed toward subconscious areas of practice and the pair realised they were exploring other zones of consciousness via sound/time and sound/energy manipulation. In early summer a pre-production session with full backline, as a trio with T.O.S. on Moog, was recorded at Dave Grohl’s 606 studios, Northridge, California.

In July 2018 SUNN O))) spent just over two weeks in Chicago at Electrical Audio (Studio A) with Steve Albini at the helm. The results are astounding: there is breadth and luminosity of colour, it sounds vast. The sessions were impeccably recorded, authentically represented and completely accurate. The spectrum cracked the firmament open in clarity. An all analogue technique was used, they recorded and mixed on tape, providing a creative gateway for SUNN O))) to evolve their production methods into stronger, confident, performance based and a more logical executive process. The album was mastered and lacquers cut from tape in October by SUNN O))) ally Matt Colton at Alchemy in London. The LP version is a AAA album, recorded and mixed on tape via a completely analogue production, from the input of the band's amplifiers and the air coming off the speakers in front of the microphones to needle touching the pressed vinyl on your turntable.

Continuing one of the main currents of the SUNN O))) concept, depth of exploration within collaboration, brought forth Hildur Guðnadóttir to the Sunn O))) constellation. Hildur is a sometime live collaborator of Sunn O))) and a renowned film music composer, former member of the bands Múm, Pan Sonic and Angel. She was a long time collaborator with the composer Jóhann Jóhannsson (RIP). Hildur lent her incredible attitude, as well as her voice, breath and electric cello, and the enigmatic haldorophone to the proceedings, culminating in the epic composition/concerto "Novæ". The cosmos clearly expands.

Tim Midyett, a close friend of Greg and Stephen since the Seattle days of the early 90s (and member of Silkworm, Bottomless Pit and Mint Mile), joined in a foundational role tying earth to sound with wicked performances on aluminium neck bass and baritone guitars: instruments he helped pioneer playing back in the 90s (alongside Steve and Shellac of course). Dark matter is reality.

Prolific new music composer Anthony Pateras arranged and recorded an incredible contribution of pipe organ for a piece titled "Troubled Air" (titled after an essay by author Aliza Shvarts, who also penned the liner notes for Sunn O)))’s Kannon) at Schlosskappelle, Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart. String theory of space.

The resulting album is titled Life Metal. It is fully realised and completely real. The record was produced by the core of Stephen & Greg & arranged by the greater constellation Sunn O))). Paintings by visual artist Samantha Keely Smithgraciously adorn the sleeve and provide a perfect suitable mask to the proceedings. They collide ideas of 19th century romanticism & late 20th abstract expressionism (mysticism) with Sunn O)))’s approach to metal (via reference points of Arbo, Turner, Delville, Richter, Turrel, Wou-Ki). Photographer Ronald Dick shot them in baths of light colour representing depth of sound pressure in the work.

This season the British Fashion Council are putting a focus on a move towards more sustainable practices and their Positive Fashion initiative through a partnership with BBC Earth and designer Amy Powney of Mother of Pearl.   The collaboration will explore the impact fashion industry has on the planet while highlighting the positive tangible opportunity for sustainable fashion choices by businesses and mindful consumer behaviour.

February 2019 will mark the second London Fashion Week that the catwalks and designer showrooms at the event will be fur free. The BFC survey around use of fur continues to reflect what is seen as a cultural change with more designer businesses and international brands choosing not to show fur as part of their collections and increasingly more moving to being completely fur free businesses.

Facts & Figures The show schedule features over 100 catwalk shows, presentations and events. This season, there are 52 designers on the LFW Show Schedule, 31presentations, 17 events, over 60 designers exhibiting in the Designer Showrooms and 7 NEWGEN designers in the NEWGEN Designer Pop-up.

Today the British Fashion Council announces new data on the British Fashion Industry:

Consumer spending on womenswear rose 5.5% to $57 billion in 2018.

Womenswear now accounts for 51% of the total clothing market, whilst menswear accounts for 26%.

Consumer spending on clothing is forecast to rise 25% to £76 billion in the next five years to 2023. (Mintel, 2018)

1 in 11 of all UK jobs are in the UK creative economy.  This comprises jobs in the creative industries and creative jobs which are in non-creative organisations (e.g. design or marketing teams within manufacturers). (Creative Industries Council, July 2018)

London Fashion Week February 2019 Schedule The London Fashion Week catwalk and presentation schedule, Designer Showrooms and DiscoveryLAB at The Store X, 180 Strand feature the very best of emerging and established names within the industry.

This season we are delighted to welcome back to London Vivienne Westwood, winner of the Swarovski Award for Positive Change at The Fashion Awards 2018.

Victoria Beckham will show in London for the second season and following last season’s much anticipated first collection under new Chief Creative Officer Riccardo Tisci, Burberry host their catwalk show on Sunday 17th February.

London’s New Establishment continue to be a key draw with shows including Erdem, JW Anderson, Christopher Kane, Simone Rocha, Roksanda, Emilia Wickstead, Peter Pilotto and Mary Katrantzou.

The NEWGEN 2018/19 line-up, the internationally celebrated BFC talent identification scheme includes catwalk shows from Kiko Kostadinov and Matty Bovan on Friday, Halpern on Saturday and Richard Malone on Monday as well as Supriya Lele and Paula Knorr who host presentations on Saturday 16 and Monday 18 respectively. Wales Bonner will be joining the womenswear schedule for the first time presenting a co-ed show whilst Richard Quinn, British Emerging Talent Womenswear winner at The Fashion Awards 2018 in partnership with Swarovski will show on Tuesday.

NEWGEN Accessories designer ISOSCELES Lingerie will showcase her collection within the DiscoveryLAB and Alighieri and The Season Hats will both have a dedicated space in the Designer Showrooms.

SUNN O))) ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM & U.S. TOUR DATES IN APRIL / WATCH THE LIFE METAL TRAILER NOW

Sunn O))) are pleased to present Life Metal, their first new studio album in four years, due for release on Southern Lord in April 2019. The album will be supported by their first U.S. tour since 2017 and the premier U.S. tour of their 2019-2020 season, including stops at The Masonic Lodge in Detroit, Howard Theatre in DC, Agora Theatre in Cleveland, The Caves in Pelham, TN and Brooklyn Steel. At the very beginning of 2018, Sunn O))) co-founders Stephen O'Malley & Greg Anderson set out on a path toward a new album production. They were both determined to create new music and a new method of working in the studio, without forgetting the long and proud history of production and studio accomplishments forged during their first two decades of existence (and the members' own musical experiences out of the band's). One long term goal was completely clear: to record Sunn O))) with Steve Albini in his Electrical Audio studio. Steve took the call, said "Sure, this will be fun. I have no idea what is going to happen." 

Greg and Stephen gathered twice that spring for writing, conceptualising and riff woodshedding in the very building where the band was formed: Downtown Rehearsal in Los Angeles. Sonic cosmoses, flashes of abstract colour (synthetic and objective) and themes emerged from the mastered depths of saturation and circuits between the two players and their mountains of gear. Themes developed in terms of brightness and energy, while visionary cues pointed toward subconscious areas of practice and the pair realised they were exploring other zones of consciousness via sound/time and sound/energy manipulation. In early summer a pre-production session with full backline, as a trio with T.O.S. on Moog, was recorded at Dave Grohl’s 606 studios, Northridge, California. 

In July 2018, Sunn O))) spent just over two weeks in Chicago at Electrical Audio (Studio A) with Steve Albini at the helm. The results are astounding: there is breadth and luminosity of colour, it sounds vast. The sessions were impeccably recorded, authentically represented and completely accurate. The spectrum cracked the firmament open in clarity. An all analogue technique was used, they recorded and mixed on tape, providing a creative gateway for Sunn O))) to evolve their production methods into stronger, confident, performance based and a more logical executive process. The album was mastered and lacquers cut from tape in October by Sunn O))) ally Matt Colton at Alchemy in London. The LP version is a AAA album, recorded and mixed on tape via a completely analogue production, from the input of the band's amplifiers and the air coming off the speakers in front of the microphones to needle touching the pressed vinyl on your turntable. 

Continuing one of the main currents of the Sunn O))) concept, depth of exploration within collaboration, brought forth Hildur Guðnadóttir to the Sunn O))) constellation. Hildur is a sometime live collaborator of Sunn O))) and a renowned film music composer, former member of the bands Múm, Pan Sonic and Angel. She was a long time collaborator with the composer Jóhann Jóhannsson (RIP). Hildur lent her incredible attitude, as well as her voice, breath and electric cello, and the enigmatic haldorophone to the proceedings, culminating in the epic composition/concerto "Novæ". The cosmos clearly expands.  

Tim Midyett, a close friend of Greg and Stephen since the Seattle days of the early 90s (and member of Silkworm, Bottomless Pit and Mint Mile), joined in a foundational role tying earth to sound with wicked performances on aluminium neck bass and baritone guitars: instruments he helped pioneer playing back in the 90s (alongside Steve and Shellac of course). Dark matter is reality.  

Prolific new music composer Anthony Pateras arranged and recorded an incredible contribution of pipe organ for a piece titled "Troubled Air" (titled after an essay by author Aliza Shvarts, who also penned the liner notes for Sunn O)))’s Kannon) at Schlosskappelle, Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart. String theory of space. 

The resulting album is titled Life Metal. It is fully realized and completely real. The record was produced by the core of Stephen & Greg & arranged by the greater constellation Sunn O))). Paintings by visual artist Samantha Keely Smith graciously adorn the sleeve and provide a perfect suitable mask to the proceedings. They collide ideas of 19th century romanticism & late 20th abstract expressionism (mysticism) with Sunn O)))’s approach to metal (via reference points of Arbo, Turner, Delville, Richter, Turrel, Wou-Ki). Photographer Ronald Dick shot them in baths of light colour representing depth of sound pressure in the work.

[TRANS] Young and charming dancers! Korean boy group ROMEO: “Missing BEAST-sunbaenims, aiming to be like Shinhwa-sunbaenims!”

20170424 - Hiroto Tachibana Back in 2015 a 7-member group ROMEO made its debut as the youngest K-POP idols. This February they came back with music produced by Brave Bros. (in Japan the CD is to be released this July). Full-scale activities in Japan started on April 21st. On April 22nd we talked to the 7 members after their live show at Tokyo’s Heiwajima.

H.Tachibana (T): Please tell us the origin of the group name ROMEO.

Seunghwan: The name is taken from the famous play ‘Romeo and Juliet’ as it is familiar to everyone and as long as we’d like to be everyone’s first love. By the way, the members are really young: leader Seunghwan was born in ’94, Yunsung, Milo and Minsung in ’96, Kyle in ’97, Hyunkyung in ’98, and maknae Kangmin in ’99.

T: How long did the trainee period last before the debut?

Hyunkyung: In average, 2 years.

T: Please share your impressions on the debut.

Yunsung: Although we were nervous as we were young at the time of the debut, I think it was a positive experience, we worked really hard without hesitation.

T: When I first saw your promotional video, I found the atmosphere close to SHINee and Infinite.

Seunghwan: We often hear our spirit is close to that of Infinite. Both groups have choreography as a main point.

T: How long does it take to memorize choreography?

Seunghwan: I believe it’s a week for 1 song.

T: Please name the groups each of you looks up to.

Seunghwan: BEAST-sunbaenims (now the name is changed to HIGHLIGHT) and Shinhwa-sunbaenims are ROMEO’s role models. Just like Shinhwa-sunbaenims, we’d like to keep good relationships between the members, look great at stage and continue our activities for a long time. Minsung: I like BIGBANG and SHINee. Kangmin: SHINee’s Taemin. Hyunkyung: Rain-sunbaenim. Kyle: 4 Men's Shin Young Jae. Milo: I like Lee Ki Kwang of HIGHLIGHT. Yunsung: Super Junior's Kyuhyun-sunbaenim. The members say they find it inspiring that Shinhwa made its debut in 1998, and they also set the charisma of BEAST (now HIGHLIGHT) as their goal. In addition, by naming R&B groups, 4Men and Super Junior’s Kyuhyun the members aim at further heights in vocal as well as dance.

T: A lot of K-POP groups come to Japan, what is ROMEO’s special point?

Milo: We are very close to our fans, have a sincere heart and would like to be seen as a group that shows growth.

T: The showcase and the first live in Tokyo are over, your impressions?

Yunsung: At the stage we managed to convey our excitement and enthusiasm to the audience and made the performance so much fun.

T: Your impression on Japanese fans?

Milo: Japanese fans are very polite. Speaking of the fans, Romeo call their fans JULIET.

T: Please share your impression on Japan and also tell us what Japanese food you like.

Yunsung: I’d never get tired of eating ramen, beef, gyudon. I like meat in every way. Despite being here for a short time, I have noticed that the streets here are clean, and the city is beautiful. Japan has a lot of advantages. Milo: I like sushi, okonomiyaki and takoyaki. Japan is beautiful, and the nights here are quiet. Kyle: I haven’t tried it yet, but I’d like to eat beef. The Japanese give an impression of people who are strictly punctual. Hyunkyung: I like Sapporo beer, drank it yesterday. Japan is quiet at night. Kangmin: I like sushi. I think the Japanese are well-mannered. Minsung: I like gyudon, sushi, takoyaki and okonomiyaki. In Japan cars are running quietly, it’s a comfortable place to live in I think. Seunghwan: Yesterday and today I ate Meiji green tea ice cream. Green tea ice cream is really popular in Korea. Japan is fantastic and is full of different colours. There are many bright people here, I think it’s a wonderful place for living.

T: Seunghwan is good at Japanese, have you studied it long?

Seunghwan: For our activities in Japan I attended a Japanese language school in Korea.

T: Please speak about your future dreams and goals for Japanese activities.

Seunghwan: ROMEO's new single will be released on July 19th, we are aiming at the first place in Oricon. We’d like to continue with high goals. I closely watched ROMEO’s performance, their main weapon is a dance technique comparable to that of Infinite. However, it is really advanced and unique. Furthermore, they’ll make an impression with their vocal once you hear their ballads. Until July they are holding free lives and other activities in Osaka, Fukuoka, Sapporo and other places.
