Saab Automobile was a manufacturer of automobiles that was founded in Sweden in 1945 when its parent company, SAAB began a project to design a small automobile. The first production model, the Saab 92, was launched in 1949. In 1968 the parent company merged with Scania-Vabis, and ten years later the Saab 900 was launched, in time becoming Saab's best-selling model. In the mid-1980s the new Saab 9000 model also appeared.

In 1989, the automobile division of Saab-Scania was restructured into an independent company, Saab Automobile AB. The American manufacturer General Motors (GM) took 50 percent ownership with an investment of US$600 million. Two well-known models to come out of this period were the Saab 9-3 and the Saab 9-5. Then in 2000, GM exercised its option to acquire the remaining 50 percent for a further US$125 million; so turning Saab Automobile into a wholly owned GM subsidiary. In 2010 GM sold Saab Automobile AB to the Dutch automobile manufacturer Spyker Cars N.V. Saab 900

After struggling to avoid insolvency throughout 2011, the company petitioned for bankruptcy following the failure of a Chinese consortium to complete a purchase of the company; the purchase had been blocked by the former owner GM, which opposed the transfer of technology and production rights to a Chinese company. On 13 June 2012, it was announced that a newly formed company called National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS) had bought Saab Automobile's bankrupt estate. According to "Saab United", the first NEVS Saab 9-3 drove off its pre-production line on 19 September 2013. Full production restarted on 2 December 2013, initially the same gasoline-powered 9-3 Aero sedans that were built before Saab went bankrupt, and intended to get the automaker’s supply chain reestablished as it attempted development of a new line of NEVS-Saab products.[8][9] NEVS lost its license to manufacture automobiles under the Saab name in the summer of 2014 and now plans to produce electric cars based on the 9-3 under its own brand name.

But most founders, because they don't win by dramatic innovations so much as by good taste and attention to detail. File I use as examples when I'm talking to companies we fund? #Lincoln was the last American brand to downsize - waiting a full three years after Cadillac and a year after Chrysler shrank it’s largest offerings. The rest of the Ford family of fine cars had been shrunk in late 1978 for the 1979 model year, but Lincoln’s new big cars, on the same #Pantherplatform as the downsized Ford LTD & Mercury Marquis but a hair larger, didn’t come online until October of 1979. - At first there were three variants - the #Continental Sedan and Coupe, renamed #TownCar and Town Coupe for 1981, and the Mark VI coupe and sedan, which continued the themes of the MK V in a smaller package. The variations didn’t last past 1983; nor did engine choices - after 1982 all Town Cars were powered by the Ford 302 V8, an engine that had earlier been the staple of economy cars like the Ford Maverick. - But the regular Town Car sedan sold well - particularly after oil prices fell of a cliff in the mid eighties and gas became cheap again. It became a familiar sight all over North America for the next decade. Aside from a rear-end restyle in 1985 and technical updates, it continued largely unchanged into the fall of 1989. These Town Cars are still common in many places - no surprise considering their durability and numbers - sales grew from 28,000 sedans in 1981 to 120,000 in 1985 and never looked back. - Some places have more survivors than others - In 80s NYC, the trend of high-end livery cabs which had begun in the late 1970s accelerated - radio-and-phone cars at first used all kinds of large cars, but the TC was their favorite. By the end of the decade it was not uncommon to see a line of black TCs outside of every office building in Manhattan, a phenomenon that only recently abated and a testament to the durability of these cars -  My uncle’s ’87 TC only gave up the ghost at 235K. - The 80s #TownCar remained a very popular car right up until the end, being restyled into an “aero look” for 1990. Everything We Know about the New Presidential Cadillac: It’s Yuge!

Seriously, that’s everything we know for sure: that it’s simply enormous. Just look at these spy photos of the new Cadillac presidential limousine, dwarfing the Chevrolet Suburbans alongside during final tests of the big rig for the bigwigs in the White House. A Suburban is nearly 19 feet long, and the last one we tested weighed more than three tons, but these two look like ordinary hatchbacks next to the president’s new set of wheels.

The existing presidential limousine, known colloquially as the Beast, was used for Donald J. Trump’s inauguration earlier this year; it debuted for the inauguration of Barack Obama in 2009. Or, rather, “they” debuted. We know for sure that there’s more than one because they can appear at both ends of a presidential field trip aboard Air Force One, and we’re pretty sure it can’t outrun an airplane. The feds admit to having “about a dozen” of the limos in service. We can also assume it has an engine—a big, powerful one that can move several tons of armored fortress at high velocity. Does it burn gasoline? Diesel? Jet fuel? Is it supercharged? All classified information, sorry.

We can see through the camouflage that where the first generation of the Beast, as it’s known, was designed to resemble Cadillac’s DTS and STS sedans of its era, the new one seems to draw inspiration more from today’s CT6 and Escalade, especially on the nose. It’s bulletproof, we’re sure, and may be armored up enough to withstand attack by grenade or rocket launcher. The U.S. Secret Service put out an invitation for bids for this replacement vehicle in 2014 and General Motors won the contract, one it has held for more than 30 years. Lincoln last provided the Town Car–based Presidential State Car (its official name) from 1989–1993, for George H.W. Bush. The last presidential limo that really resembled a production car was a Cadillac again, during the George W. Bush administration, when it looked a lot like a DeVille but was actually built on a General Motors SUV chassis.

The Beast 2.0 that now chugs toward Mar-a-Lago appears to be built on a medium-duty truck frame like its predecessor and may not be significantly larger. Interior seating is in a 2-3-2 configuration, and while updated communications and electronics abilities are to be expected, these cars aren’t really mobile offices—presidents rarely ride in them over long distances. We might also anticipate an adjustable suspension to raise the ride height, considering the embarrassment that ensued when the Beast got high-centered during a state visit to Dublin in 2011.

We’re really just guessing, though, because the veil of secrecy surrounding the vehicle, in the name of national security, is nearly impenetrable. Even its cost fits into a wide estimate range that tops out at $1.5 million. Each. (The best estimate on the previous model was $300,000 to $1.5 million.) When Jerry Seinfeld went for a ride with Obama in the Beast for an episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, the former president told him it weighs 10 tons, but we can’t be sure that wasn’t one of his attempts to be a comedian. Perhaps the new president will tweet his own alternative facts about this new machine.
