LOGO DEVELOPMENT
Mcdonald’s
In 1953 the designer Stanley Clark Meston created the first building with golden arches on either side. In 1961 these arches made their way into the brands' logo, designed by Jim Schindler the logo included the arches in an 'm' the logo included a slanted line through the 'm'. Although at this time the Macdonalds' name was already recognizable they just needed a logo to reflect that and throughout the years it underwent many designs including the golden arches which some people say can represent two fries. It now has a simple design recognized across the globe.
Tumblr media
Adidas
The creator of Adidas was Adolf Dassler who created the name of the brand on his own. Even though the logo has always had three stripes it has changed over the years. The logo now is striped at a 30-degree angle to create a mountain representing the challenge all athletes face and overcome day after day. The current logo was created in 1991.
Tumblr media
Vivienne Westwood
Vivienne Westwood came up with the idea of her logo when searching for inspiration for her next collection, as she was on a train she saw a woman wearing a Harris tweed jacket and ballet shoes, this then gave her inspiration to create a full collection of Harris tweed. The Harris tweed logo consisted of an orb similar to Westwood's, The brand was so excited that she has revived the brand. Harris Tweed as a gift let Vivienne reinvent their logo and create her own, representing expiration and innovation, with this ring representing Saturn.
Tumblr media
Coca-Cola
The Coca-Cola logo is one of the most recognizable soft drink logos across the world, a man called Frank Robinson based the name on the original ingredient's coco nut leaves and cola nuts. In 1886 the name first came out as Coca-Cola in a simple font, in 1887 he then designed a logo that is similar to the one we use today, he create his own calligraphy which is now a font called Spenserian. Spencer overexaggerated the two C's, this is a very effective marketing technique. There were a couple more designs before the original, there was a new font that was changed within a year, and then in 1891, they changed the logo to red. In 1941 the new logo was made which is used in all the branding and products. Overall, the brand has stuck with the original design apart from a few changes like the thickness and sharpness.
Tumblr media
Starbucks
The Starbucks logo is one of the most recognizable logos in the world, the company started in Seattle and the founders wanted a connection with the sea. The name was originally Pequod after a whaling ship, but they realized this name wasn’t catchy they changed it to Starbuck after the first mate. They looked too old marine books for designs for the logo, and eventually, they found the two-tailed siren. The Siren links to Greek mythology, the Siren creature would lore people in. The first logo in 1971 depicted the Siren naked which caused some complaints, which they changed and covered her chest with her hair. In 1987 they adopted the famous green colour whilst also going through changes in 1992 and 2011 the colour never changed.
Tumblr media
Chanel
The designer Coco Chanel created her logo from not only her name,  but by herself in 1925 in the orphanage, she spent most of her childhood inspired by interfaced curves she'd seen in a glass window of the church. The logo is almost 100 years and has to be one of the worlds best know.

Researchers have made a whale of a discovery — a hybrid of a beluga whale and a narwhal.
DNA analysis of the whale’s skull confirmed it to be the male offspring of a narwhal mother and a beluga father, researchers report June 20 in Scientific Reports.
The animal was one of three unusual whales caught during a subsistence hunt in 1986 or 1987 in western Greenland’s Disko Bay, and the only one with any known remains. The three whales were all uniformly gray, with pectoral fins shaped like belugas’ and tails shaped like narwhals’.
The Inuit hunter, who gave the skull to researchers, said that he’d never seen such odd whales before or since, says Eline Lorenzen, an evolutionary biologist and curator of the National Museum of Denmark at the University of Copenhagen where the skull is housed. Disko Bay is one of the few places where belugas and narwhals overlap during mating season.
Previous DNA analysis of the decades-old skull was “lousy,” Lorenzen says. So she and colleagues used techniques for analyzing ancient DNA to determine that the animal had a roughly 50-50 mix of beluga and narwhal DNA, making it a first-generation hybrid (SN: 11/11/17, p. 16). There’s no way to tell whether the hybrid whale was fertile. Analysis of isotopes, heavier or lighter variants of certain atoms, suggests that the hybrid may have had different feeding patterns than either parent species.
Before the new study, the clearest indication that the animal was neither pure beluga nor full narwhal came from its teeth, which were unlike those of both Arctic species, says Randall Reeves, a whale biologist who chairs the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s cetacean specialist group. Reeves helped in describing the skull as a potential hybrid decades ago but was not involved in the new research.
Beluga whales have 40 peglike teeth. Narwhal females have no teeth, while narwhal males have one, sometimes two, spiraled teeth that pierce through their lip forming the famous “tusk.” The male hybrid had forward-pointing grooved teeth, but not the long tusk tooth.
It’s not clear whether the tusk sometimes gets in the way of narwhal mating, but it’s a distinguishing characteristic that might warn a female beluga that a male narwhal is a different species. Female narwhals, on the other hand, have a similar size and shape to female belugas, and might be more easily mistaken for them, says Reeves, who is based in Hudson, Canada. “A female narwhal being impregnated by a male beluga is pretty believable.”
Still, the pairing is unusual, even shocking, to some researchers who have studied the species for years with hardly an inkling of such intermingling. The beluga and narwhal branches of the whale family tree split off about 5 million years ago — about the same time human and chimpanzee ancestors went their separate ways. Lorenzen’s team also detected no evidence of hybridization within the last 1.5 million years in the DNA of other belugas and narwhals So when the team presented the findings at a conference of beluga researchers held in Mystic, Conn., in March, “you could hear a pin drop when we said it was a first-generation hybrid,” Lorenzen says. “They were so surprised.”
Given how infrequently humans observe whales in the remote Arctic, it’s hard to say whether the hybrid is a fluke, says Kristin Laidre, a marine mammal biologist and narwhal expert at the University of Washington in Seattle. “I don’t think it’s a highly common thing,” or large subsistence hunts might have turned up other specimens, she says. “But I wouldn’t be surprised if there were other hybrids.”

A Little History
We purchased the Flying Eagle in the fall of 2017 from the Northwest Boat center in Port Townsend.  The family of the previous owner donated her to the Center after Mr Sullivan passed away. We are the fourth owners of this rare vessel.  We knew she was going to be a project but I’m afraid we underestimated  the task at hand.
The Flying Eagle was built in 1985 by Landamore Yacht Builders in Norfolk England. She was built for an American Airlines pilot named Charles Daudt.
He fell while crossing the English Channel and broke some ribs and had to have a crew bring her over to New Hampshire.
She traded hands 1987 to Mr & Mrs Bruce.  They first brought her down to Norfolk, Va., did some work on her and then took her to Tortola in the BVI where she was kept her at Tortola Marine Mgt.  until she was brought up to sell in 1994. Thank you goes to Melene Bruce whom provided historical  information.
The Sullivan’s purchased her in 1995 and brought her to the northwest.  At one point Jack Sullivan was the commandant of the Seattle Yacht Club and it is my understanding took the Flying Eagle to Alaska a couple of times.  We were not sure if that made the Flying Eagle the flagship or not?  We invite Melene Bruce and the Sullivan’s to share some historical perspective to the Flying Eagle Blog.

PRODcast 140′s Old School Player of the Week: Brick Smith
Brick Dudley Smith was NOT A COP, but was rather a first baseman for the Seattle Mariners for about all of 15 minutes in 1987 and 88. In those 15 minutes, Brick played in 9 games, got 18 ABs, hit two singles, struck out 5 times, walked twice, drove in a single run, hit .111, and posted an OPS+ of -13. (Which is an OPS minus?) Quite a career for a guy who looks like your new stepdad who is also a state trooper and definitely doesn’t talk about his “playing days” ad nauseum.
According to Wikipedia, “Brick Dudley Smith now teaches 7th grade U.S. history at Providence Day School, and it is nearly impossible to pass his class.” And that’s true because it’s on the internet.
