Krull (1983)
Tumblr media
I can see why Krull has developed a cult status but unless you get stung by that magic bug, it’s just ok at best. Plenty of cool visuals don't make up for a story that's nothing special. If you’re seeing it (as I did) because you’ve heard that it’s a knock-off of Star Wars, it really isn’t.
On planet Krull, an ancient prophecy is about to come to pass. “A girl of ancient name shall become queen and she shall choose a kind. Together they shall rule their world, and their son shall rule the galaxy”. That’s when the “Beast” arrives. The hideous, shape-shifting, mind-reading, creature whose mountain-like spaceship contains a legion of stormtroopers. When the Beast attacks the wedding ceremony of Prince Colwyn (Ken Marshall) and Princess Lyssa (Lysette Anthony), it kidnaps the bride and leaves everyone else but her groom dead. It’s up to Colwyn to assemble an army, save his wife, and take down the invading force.
Let's address the Star Wars business first. Though sources on the web have drawn comparisons between Krull and George Lucas' universe (which is why I watched this back-to-back with Revenge of the Sith), the only similarities are superficial: the opening shot of the Beast’s mountain flying in space, and its armies of stormtroopers armed with laser guns. Not at all what I expected but that might be a good thing, right?
Krull takes a long time to get going. The heroes need to find the Beast’s fortress… which teleports to a different location every day. They visit wise man after wise man to find out where it’s going to show up next. It's all padding before the action. There are no grandiose battles where armies clash, no monsters in forbidden cavers for our hero to face, just a lot of climbing cliffs and talking to old people. The movie could have regained some points by having interesting characters, but you won’t find any. Colwyn is bland, so is the princess. The Beast wants to marry the woman for reasons that are never explained. Only two of the characters we meet along the way are memorable: the bumbling wizard Ergo (David Battley). There are a lot of wizards in this movie, but he stands out because he can’t get any spell right. He gets some nice character development when he kinda-sorta adopts a young boy Titch (Graham McGrath). These two are the most exciting humans you'll find on this twin-sunned, twin-mooned planet.
The picture's appeal resides entirely on ts visuals. This is a beautiful movie with many sweeping shots of the countryside, mountains, and cliffs. It’s got some pretty good special effects, including a stop-motion creature that couldn’t have been animated better if Ray Harryhausen and Willis O'Brien had done it themselves. The Beast’s lair also stands out. Halfway between something out of the mind of Salvador Dali and Jesper Myrfors’ Cosmic Horror it’s a maze of claws, teeth, gaping mouths, twitching eyes, and looks terrific.
Oh, I know what you’re thinking. “When is he going to mention The Glaive?” For those unfamiliar with the film, our hero must obtain a magical weapon to defeat the beast that frankly, is a whole lot cooler to imagine than it is to see on-screen. It’s a 5-pointed switchblade/boomerang. It doesn’t shoot beams like the movie cover might lead you to believe, so don’t get too excited.
If you want a Lord of the Rings knock-off varnished with a thin layer of Star Wars and you’ve got some friends in the right mood, Krull might be just the thing for you. I’m speaking theoretically. I didn’t find much enjoyment in the story but I did enjoy the visuals. Krull is ok. (On DVD, December 12, 2015)

Who remembers The Charmkins? It was a television film based on a toyline by Hasbro, in the early 1980s, which was broadcast on October 25, 1983 . "Brown-Eyed Susan and the other Charmkin children of Charmland go on a quest to rescue Lady Slipper after she is kidnapped by Evil Dragonweed and whisked off to Thistledown to dance for him and his goons." . You can even watch it on YouTube! And yes, I did! . The Prey (1983)
Tumblr media
Re-evaluating 1983's The Prey, I've realized I was far too generous when I gave 1 out of 5 stars in 2012. Throw this movie in the trash, then dump your used cat litter on it. It could only improve the aroma that emanates from this horror film when you hit "play".
Three couples go into the wilderness for a weekend of swimming, camping, rock climbing, and frolicking. Too bad there’s a killer after them! Joel (Steve Bond), Nancy (Debbie Thureson), Bobbie (Lori Lethin), Skip (Robert Wald), Greg (Philip Wenckus), Gail (Gayle Gannes), and forest ranger Mark (Jackson Bostwick) are in for a weekend they’ll never forget… if they make it out alive at all!
The acting is ok, at best. When we actually see blood spilled, the effects are alright - I suppose. The monster looks pretty good. That’s all I can credit the fil for. I would praise the cinematography for its nice expanses of wilderness, but it's all clearly stock footage. The idea must've been to show how cutthroat nature can be by showing animals preying on each other - what fate awaits these people then? - but it isn't successful at all. Instead, you’ll only be distracted, trying to guess how many documentaries this film pulled images from. I counted footage of 20 different animals! You’d rather watch those animals than a long scene in which Ranger Mark plays his banjo though, I don’t know what that was about.
Even going in with low expectations won't save you from disappointment. The film's characters are just so dumb. Either that or the tagline of this film should be “In the forest, no one can hear you scream”. When they’re not wandering around wondering where their friends have disappeared to in the middle of the night, these half-wits are tripping over themselves sitting paralyzed on the ground while the killer (who they try and sell as some kind of forest monster/yeti creature but is obviously isn't) walks up to them.
Tumblr media
Look at that cover. What do you see? “It’s not human, and it’s got an axe!” above a nice monochromatic illustration of a hatchet embedded into a… tree? It doesn't matter, as the whole thing is a lie. See, the film's killer IS human, and saying that it “has an axe” is basically a lie too, since it only uses an axe twice, both times off-screen, and as a weapon of opportunity!
You can’t even enjoy The Prey ironically. While, it gets a little sleazy in that fun horror movie way with a bit of nudity and a couple of dead people killed in somewhat humorous ways (one person gets their head twisted all the way around) but all that enjoyment is soured at the end. We have mystery slasher films (Friday the 13th, Sleepaway Camp). We have supernatural slasher films (Nightmare on Elm Street, It Follows). This falls into another sub-genre, the “Mountain Man” slasher films. Not quite the "Backwoods Killer Hillbilly" story, these always end with the male monster saving the final girl so they can breed and continue its unholy lineage. If you want to employ the fear of sexual assault, that’s ok, but don’t toss it in willy nilly!
Tumblr media
All this to say The Prey is a waste of time. I don’t recommend it. I’d even say I hate it. Even more for the fact that I’ve now seen it twice and spent that much more effort giving it a proper review. The characters are just so stupid, the movie so cheap, the imagination so blatantly absent, and the ending is an insult. It's the equivalent of a prankster that sneaks into your room and leaves piles of soiled underwear for your mom to find on laundry day. It deserves a grudge be held against it. (On VHS, November 21, 2015)

Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Return of the Jedi doesn't quite reach the mythic quality of the previous film. It's still a fitting end to the trilogy. Episode VI has as many exotic locations as the previous chapters, it has the action you want, and though it may be more "kid-friendly", this change isn't out-of-place. It brings things around nicely. You’ve come to love these characters and it’s finally time to say goodbye as the saga comes to an end.
With Han Solo (Harrison Ford) in the clutches of gangster Jabba the Hutt, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), C-3P0 (Anthony Daniels), and R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) stage a daring rescue.  Only then can they address the rumors that the Galactic Empire’s Emperor (Ian McDiarmid) is personally overseeing the construction of a new Death Star. They must also contest with Darth Vader (voiced by James Earl Jones), who is determined to lure his son to the Dark Side of the Force.
Episode VI begins with a strong conclusion to the Han Solo rescue story. This series has been full of great villains and this adventure gives us another: the gag-inducing Jabba the Hutt. Looking like a giant space slug, cruel Jabba laughs heartily at the suffering of others. Thank goodness he's too massive to get off his throne. Otherwise, this galactic pervert would be leaving slimy handprints on every woman in the vicinity. You love to hate him. It’s a shame his scene had to be cut from the original Star Wars. We could've gotten just a little bit more of him.
From there, the stakes are raised. We finally meet Darth Vader’s master, the Emperor. This cackling, loathsome wizard is one of my favorite characters in the entire franchise. He’s so deceitful cruel and manipulative. You get the sense that he’s much more powerful than he lets on, which means he’s the most fearsome of them all. He's there to make sure the Death Star will be finished on-schedule; as if he'll be pushing the "fire" button himself. Some might say another killer moon is lacking in originality, I say when you have a machine powerful enough to destroy entire planets with ease, you don’t toss it away if you hit a couple of snags the first time!
The one flawed aspect of this story is towards the middle when we encounter some creatures named Ewoks. They’re fun… but a tad too kid-friendly. They're introduced ready to roast our heroes over a fire. Afterward, they're big teddies. The idea is that they’re the opposite of the Storm Troopers. They’re low-tech, kind of stupid but could turn out to be allies. I get it, I just wish they weren’t so comedic. This movie’s got slavery, executions, man-eating monsters, torture, heavy emotions, and a tad too much levity.
Things pick up again during the epic conclusion. It’s filled with emotion from, of all people, Darth Vader - a man with no mouth, eyebrows, nose, or means to show distress, fear, or anger. Everything you've gone through with all of the characters converges. My star rating might be lower but there are not just one or two, but many, many memorable and amazing moments throughout.
Return of the Jedi manages to keep the imagination flowing and expands this beloved universe. It’s not just a satisfying ending, but a great one. All your favorites are back: Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, R2, C-3P0, Yoda, Vader. Lando gets a bigger role than before and we get terrific additions that are just as memorable as the rest. Return of the Jedi completes a trilogy that’s hard not to fall in love with. (Original 1983 version on DVD, October 20, 2012)
