LES MIS LETTERS IN ADAPTATION - Some Petticoat, LM 3.3.7 (Les Miserables 1972)
We have mentioned a lancer. He was a great-grand-nephew of M. Gillenormand, on the paternal side, who led a garrison life, outside the family and far from the domestic hearth. Lieutenant Théodule Gillenormand fulfilled all the conditions required to make what is called a fine officer. He had “a lady’s waist,” a victorious manner of trailing his sword and of twirling his moustache in a hook. He visited Paris very rarely, and so rarely that Marius had never seen him. The cousins knew each other only by name. We think we have said that Théodule was the favorite of Aunt Gillenormand, who preferred him because she did not see him. Not seeing people permits one to attribute to them all possible perfections.

Theodule's Cap. (Or Helm?)
Tumblr media
In some illustrations and 1972 drama, Theodule wears this college hat shaped cap(or shako I guess?), which was seen in very many lancers of 19th century European countries like the below images.

However in some illustrations including Lynd Ward's, he wears similar helms like the dragoons and cuirassiers.
Tumblr media
Did they also had a helms for the lancers or the illustration is wrong? Do you know anything more about this?

I've noticed that people only know one adaptation that Theodule appeared in and it’s 1972 film adaptation sooo I'm here to do my job and show you guys the other two adaptations he's appeared in!
I've already posted one here and the other one I'm going to share now is from the French Comic by Gaston Niezab (1947)
Tumblr media
I'm starting to forget that he's completely blonde because he rarely appears in adaptations and illustrations and yet they always make his hair dark.. am I missing something??
Tumblr media
Anyway, look at him listens to his auntie because he's a good boy <3 (or because she gave him ten louis but whatever)
Tumblr media
and because he’s a good boy, he’s spying on Marius as his auntie asked him to do <3
(he actually barely manages to do that because he fell asleep + he did it because he was also so curious about Marius little girl but whatever)
Tumblr media
That moment when Cosette realizes that there is someone MUCH BETTER than Marius.
I love the way he's just standing there in front of her like he's standing on purpose so she can appreciate his beauty lol.
Tumblr media
No matter how disappointed you are because you’re favorite little moment doesn't appear in the adaptations, remember that there’s an adaptation has this MOMENT!
They didn't last long because Marius saved himself with his long letter and now Cosette wants to throw something on Theodule's head sooo badly because she doesn't like him anymore.
Tumblr media
He’s so simple. he noticed that Cosette lost interest so he just smiles and moves on with his life like nothing.

I often care about the covers, and this cover is boring.. but it's OKAY

LES MISÉRABLES (1972)
“ A little peasant girl, all entangled with the horses and the postilions at the end of the vehicle, was offering flowers to the travellers. ‘Give your ladies flowers!’ she cried. Marius approached her and purchased the finest flowers in her flat basket.
‘Come now,’ said Theodule, leaping down from the coupe, ‘this piques my curiosity. Who the deuce is he going to carry those flowers to? She must be a splendidly handsome woman for so fine a bouquet. I want to see her.’
[…] On arriving at the church, Marius did not enter it, but skirted the apse. He disappeared behind one of the angles of the apse.
‘The rendezvous is appointed outside,’ said Theodule. ‘Let’s have a look at the lass.’
On arriving there, he halted in amazement.
Marius, with his forehead clasped in his hands, was kneeling upon the grass on a grave. He had strewn his bouquet there. At the extremity of the grave, on a little swelling which marked the head, there stood a cross of black wood with this name in white letters: COLONEL BARON PONTMERCY. Marius’ sobs were audible.
The ‘lass’ was a grave. ”
